Sharing my funny face and funny sound this morning. I’m actually doing an exercise called single cavity technique. Our teacher, Overtone master @nestorkornblum does it way, way much better. Overtone singing (or harmonics) is an ancient technique that produces 2 or more sounds simultaneously. It was first discovered by mathematician Pythagoras 2,600 years ago using a monochord. Nestor emphasizes that overtone singing, with intention, can miraculously serve as a “very powerful tool for vibrational re-patterning to reprogram our physical, mental and emotional bodies with a more harmonious, natural in tune pattern. In primary school I had this one 'friend', who would get really mad at me every time I sang for the sheer fun of it. Sometimes she would hit me, to make me stop (and admittedly, that was what it took, back then, to make me stop singing).

Our 'friendship' ended, when we were about twelve, I think, my parents and I had already moved elsewhere, and I visited for her birthday party. Her family had a piano at home, and somehow, encouraged by some of her other guests, I ended up playing and singing the two or three popsongs I just had learned back than. She told me to stop and her friends told me to continue and long story short, she poured a whole glass of cola on me.

Alashensemble.com Bady-Dorzhu Ondar of the Tuvan band Alash throat singing in the Kargyraa style. The Alash ensemble is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei) developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains grounded in this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from the West. the tiny republic of tuva is a giant when it comes to mastery of the human voice. Tuvan throat singers can produce two or three, sometimes even four pitches simultaneously. The effect has been compared to that of a bagpipe. The singer starts with a low drone. Then, by subtle manipulations of his vocal tract and keen listening, he breaks up the sound, amplifying one or more overtones enough so that they can be heard as additional pitches while the drone continues at a lower volume.
