Turning Failure to Fuel Growth
Daily writing promptHow has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?View all responses I don’t see failure as an end—just a chance for a do-over. A few years after taking a break to have my baby, I took on a paid job behind the camera again. I was excited to get back into it and put my heart into the work. When I showed the photos to others, they said they looked great. But…

Turning Failure into Fuel for Success
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? Failure is something we all try to avoid, yet it often turns out to be the best teacher. Looking back, one of my biggest failures was a project I was passionate about but couldn’t see through to success. At the time, it felt like a dead-end—months of hard work, late nights, and sacrifices, only to watch it unravel. But in…

Health Journey Week 22 Update: Overcoming Setbacks
This morning started with a wave of disappointment. I stepped on the scale and saw I had gained 5 pounds of the 50 I worked so hard to lose over the past 5 months, 2 weeks, and 4 days. The month prior, I had been battling a three-week plateau, so this weight gain hit even harder. At first, I didn’t believe it. I stepped on the scale three more times, hoping for a different result. But the…

The idea that Daniel is really aware again of the sacrifices of Formula 1 makes a lot of sense to me. It feels like he had to remake that choice to go for it, and having the time off reminded him of what life could be like without Formula 1 (didn't suck necessarily), so he really is doing this consciously again in a way that you lose a little of when the sport becomes your "normal" for so long
Honestly, I have found it fascinating to read Daniel’s interviews about his time off and making his way back into formula one. I know a lot of people find the way he’s talked about things too on the nose or maybe just therapy-speak, but I feel like there has been a thread of genuineness through everything he’s said. It’s not very often you see athletes put their hands up and accept they’ve failed like he did at the end of his time at McLaren, but then he went away and found an appreciation for life without formula one. As you’ve said, it didn’t necessarily suck but it probably also made him realise that this wasn’t the life he wanted to live yet and he had to make that conscious decision to come back.
And he’s talked about how important it was that the motivation to work hard came from himself and so he went back and looked for it in the Daniel who left home at 17. I see a lot of young Daniel in him now in those rare off-track moments we’re lucky to see. Obviously he’s outgrown the shyness and awkwardness, but he has the same quiet introspection now
Which is why I think he has this edge of anger in him lately. He feels boxed to a certain extent by this image of the carefree guy he’s played for so long on camera. It was easy to lean into that image when he was doing well on track because it made everything he did look effortless, but now it works against him because he has to constantly prove he’s here because he loves racing and that he’s working twice as hard as the others.
Personally, seeing Daniel not hesitating to call people out on their bullshit is so refreshing because it’s such a step away from the people-pleaser that he is or this always-on PR guy image he has. He can’t be bothered to suffer fools because he knows his worth, knows where he’s at and what he needs to do and he won’t hesitate to remind people

It’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind when you see others reaching their goals, but there’s no set timeline for success. What’s important…
