An Introduction to Quadrant

I’ve seen too many people saying they don’t know exactly what Quadrant is, so I’m here to help you out

Quadrant is a Gaming and Lifestyle brand (kinda like 100 Thieves) founded by Lando Norris. It has four key elements: gaming, racing, content and apparel. A Gaming and Lifestyle brand is a brand that appeals to the ‘gamer’ culture, and their target market are gamers and racing fans, people who are on the internet, watching YouTube and Twitch, and specifically like racing related content. Lando founded the brand at some point in March 2020, and implemented it with the help of Veloce to launch in November that year (and yes he kept it a secret that whole time).

The name comes from Lando’s number and from the four elements (not from the number of members, like some people thought).

They have a ‘Content Team’, i.e. the people in the spotlight:

Lando Norris: Founder, Formula 1 driver, occasionally streams on Twitch (1M+ followers) and uploads on YouTube (741K subscribers)

Aarav Amin/Aarava: YouTuber (614K subscribers), primarily known for F1 Career Mode gameplay, occasionally streams on Twitch (50K followers).

Maria Bish/RiaBish: Streamer, had a deal with Facebook for a year (100K followers), returning to Twitch in 2022 (13K followers), occasionally uploads vlogs on YouTube (19K subscribers).

Niran Yesufu/FNG: YouTuber (598K subscribers), focussed mostly on Football, but if you know where to look you can find his old F1/racing channel (9K subscribers), occasionally streams on Twitch (42K followers).

Steve Alvarez Brown/SuperGT: YouTuber (640K subscribers / 9K subscribers), simracing content, kart racer (more of that later), on Twitch but he’s not much of a streamer (9K Followers).

Ethan Pink/Fifakill: Streamer (267K followers), plays Call Of Duty on Twitch, uploads on YouTube too (56K followers).

Max Fewtrell: Racing Driver, Streamer (44K followers), probably the biggest non-F1 driver streamer in the motorsports space (relative to stream viewers), mostly chatting streams but he does play games too. He has ambitions to start a YouTube channel to vlog his racing, would start one anyway but doesn’t know what else to make videos about.

Quadrant’s content creators were already ‘popular’ before joining the team, Aarav, Niran and Steve were already on a couple hundred thousand subscribers, Ethan averaging around 700 viewers, Max averaging around 300 viewers (I might elaborate on his growth in another post), Ria averaged around 70 when she was on Twitch, but then secured a deal with Facebook (and I can’t get those stats).

Quadrant has begun branching in esports, starting with the Halo Championship Series. They signed four players who compete on behalf of Quadrant, and participated in their first LAN event on 17-19 December 2021 (HCS Raleigh). They also have plans to expand to other esports categories over the course of 2022 and beyond.

Looking further into the four ‘key aspects’:

Gaming

The members themselves are all gamers, and all ‘create’ gaming content of some sort. A lot of the content posted on their YouTube channel is ‘gaming’ content. 23 of the 62 videos uploaded involve the members playing a videogame. Games played include: F1, Assetto Corsa, Skribbl.io, CoD: Warzone, Golf with your Friends, Five Nights at Freddy’s VR, Minecraft, Rocket League and Geoguessr. Quadrant have also done Squad Streams playing F1, F1 Race Stars (attempted), Minecraft and UNO.

Racing

As the Brand of a Formula 1 driver, there is a primary racing influence. They have done racing focussed segments with Lando and Steve karting content and Quadrant x Yas Heat on track content.

Quadrant also has a ‘sponsorship’ position, after signing as a sponsor for Steve to compete in the Ultimate Karting Championship in 2021. There is a likelihood for them to continue with this with Steve and potentially also Max on his return to racing.

Quadrant also launched a live-streamed series taking place on Lando’s Twitch titled ‘The Pitwall’, a live watchalong to the Formula 1 Grand Prix, with suggestions to expand to other racing series and major motorsport events. The Pitwall is usually hosted by Max and Niran, with guests to be included in later streams. This format allows better audience participation via Twitch chat and Twitter, using #ThePitwall.

Content

As an internet based brand, Quadrant rely on content creation in terms of brand image. Content varies from YouTube videos (weekly videos on Wednesdays at 4pm, which kinda went out the window as of December 2021), TikToks, Instagram posts (yes, that does count as content) and Twitch streams. The Quadrant YouTube channel accrews around two thousand subscribers weekly, fluctuating relative to video release and content.

More recently, Quadrant have capitalised on less Covid restrictions to film more IRL content, including cooking videos, game show-inspired videos, challenges, get-to-know-the-squad videos, and vlogs.

As part of content creation, Quadrant have collaborated with numerous creators, including: Vikkstar123, Jarno Opmeer, Tiametmarduk, CouRageJD, Marcel Kiefer, Tommo McCluskey, TBJZL, WillNE, Haydon Guillis, Felix Von Der Laden, Jardier, Soundhead, Dani Moreno, Zerkaa, James Baldwin, Jimmy Broadbent, Mahaveer Ragunathan (yes, actually), MaximeMXM, TommyT999, Thibaut Courtois, F1Elly, Dr Lupo (kinda), Aldas, Pieface and Yas Heat.

Apparel

Quadrant release merchandise through limited merch drops, each with a different theme. The merch is designed by Will Kerr and approved by Lando and the rest of the team.

vONE: the first collection, in the team’s colours - black and fluro green/yellow. It included a black t-shirt with the split logo on the side and the full name on the chest, a black hoodie with the small full logo on the chest and “QUADRANT” on the sleeve, a black beanie printed with the black Q logo on the front, and a balck bucket hat with Qs printed over it. The hoodie and t-shirt was initially designed by Lando, then kept as the final design, with the bucket hat referencing the iconic Valentino Rossi one, reflecting Lando’s personality.

Speedshop: created in direct collaboration with Veloce, Quadrant released an exclusive merch line sold at the VeloceXQuadrant stand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After the event, it was made accessible to Quadrant Discord members, then to the public. The release included a black and cream hoodie and a black and white t-shirt with “QDRNT”, the number 4 and “Lando” printed on the back and sleeves.

Clover Motors: inspired by motorsport visuals, and the name taken from Lando’s number four, with “Clover” referring to a lucky clover with four leaves. The colours were different to that of the previous drops, and Quadnant’s aesthetic on a whole, moving to pink and blue. They released two hoodies, one grey with the signature at the front in blue and the large logo and phone number on the back, the other blue with the signature in pink and the logo smaller on the sleeve, also in pink. A jumper/sweatshirt was released in grey with the logo in the middle on the chest, the same design on one of the t-shirts. The other t-shirt was in blue with white printing: the signature on the front and the big logo and phone number on the back. They also released a long sleeved white shirt with white printing: the small logo on the front in the middle and the big logo and phone number on the back. The phone number was originally going to be connected to a voicemail from the team, with the idea scrapped because they couldn't get it to work, and it would exclude international fans.

Quadrant merch is considered expensive (and I’m not going to disagree, I have yet to cop my first piece), but they do adhere to quality standards, available on the website. The prices reflect the materials used and the workers putting the items together. The items are also shipped in biodegradable packaging. Following vONE, Quadrant supplied responding to demand in terms of sizes relative to the audience.

Over the time they have been active, they have acquired sponsorships from streaming hardware brand Elgato and travel brand Tumi. As well as this they had a paid partnership with Logitech, promoting an OLED monitor. Quadrant have streamed as part of the Gillette Gaming Alliance. Niran and Ria were invited to the LDNUTD x SamsungKX live All Access Gaming event (13th November 2021), and Niran and Max were invited to participate in McLaren Shadow’s Stream For Mind (28th October 2021).

Connecting with the Fans

When Quadrant begen, there was an emphasis on connecting the fans with the creators, through social media content and streams, later introducing an official Discord server. The Discord server was used to create a Q&A video, released in February 2021, collect Yes/No questions, ‘never have I ever’s and ‘who’s most likely to’s, and the ability to submit ideas for future content.

When Covid restrictions in the UK opened up, Quadrant announced their first IRL event - The Goodwood Festival of Speed, in partnership with Veloce, with a few Quadrant members rotating at the Veloce stand over the three days. A week later, the group attended the Formula One British Grand Prix, taking over a grandstand during Friday practice, and the FanZone following Sprint Qualifying. At the end of the season, they went to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but less as a fan-connection event. Quadrant have more plans for IRL events in the future.

For those who are unfamiliar, Discord is a mass-messaging platform (supporting instant messaging, voice calling, video calling, screenshare, etc), kinda like a ‘group chat (channel) within group chat (server)’ thing, with permissions based on user roles, used primarily in the gaming community to connect people when playing online, but has also expanded to cater for communities (it’s also my go-to messaging app lol). Discord operates through invite links to servers, and the link can be restricted to a set number of joins, a feature Quadrant utilises and gains criticism for. They usually distribute links with 25 or 50 ‘keys’, and on events, 100, usually via Twitter, Instagram stories, in Emails sent to fans signed up to the mailing list and Twitch chat (there is also one person who I know received a key via Twitter DMs but that was the only one). This has sparked some kind of criticism as it appears that the fans that do get access are ‘favouritised’, and has left fans waiting for keys since the server launch. The Discord server currently has just over 2,600 members (relative to the 450K subscribers), including Team Members, Veloce staff, moderators and bots.

A bit about Veloce

Veloce are the team that organised the ‘Not the GP…’ series during lockdown 2020, featuring Racing Drivers, Professional Simracers and Content Creators, the Veloce Squadsprint, a series of virtual simraces featuring Veloce’s in-house teams, and the Veloce Pro Series focussing on professional racing drivers - but in supercars. Veloce also entered three teams for the Virtual Le Mans 24 in 2020, partnering with drivers such as Jean-Eric Vergne (who’s also Veloce’s founder), Pierre Gasly, Norman Nato, Stoffel Vandoorne, Sacha Fenestraz and Ryan Tveter.

Quadrant is managed/handled by Veloce (the same overall company that compete in W Series and Extreme E, but their esports branch), and their members are also considered to be part of Veloce. Lando has a personal partnership with Veloce for Quadrant. Veloce manage other sim racing-oriented esports teams, such as McLaren Shadow, Sauber Esports, Mercedes AMG Esports and Yas Heat, as well as the in-house team. Quadrant’s manager from March 2020 to November 2021 (Nathan Tague) was also McLaren Shadow’s manager, before departing the Veloce circle to pursue a new challenge. Aarav, Niran and Ria have appeared on Veloce Esports’ Backseat Driver (a ‘live reaction’ to Formula One races) (pre Pitwall launch) and most of the Quadrant members have appeared on the Veloce channel. A lot of Quadrant’s staff also work for Veloce. Notable staff include Kate Hewitt (Social Media), Mickey O’Brian (Marketing/Socials), Cam Royal (not entirely sure, I think he took over from Nathan when he left, he was in charge of Quadrant for both Abu Dhabi trips (discord admin)), and Isaac Forcella (production lead) Jamie MacLaurin (I think he's their manager now, also in charge of the money stuff).

Since everyone got a free T3 ticket to try and compensate for how much of a shit-show this entire event was, I decided to just go ahead and use it on Grand Narmaya, and while I was at it I got Vane from the new suptix.

So I guess I may as well take the opportunity to give my own two cents on this whole debacle, lol.

Firstly, just to go over why I chose those two units from the free ticket and the suptix, I chose Narmaya over Belial because wind GW is relatively soon, and I currently have over 120 gold moons, so it won’t be that long before I can just get a sierotix normally and use it for Belial, so I just decided that Narmaya was the better option. I’m also just the sort of person who’s always going to be more interested in getting a new character in a game like this compared to a piece of equipment that just boosts my damage.

I was actually genuinely tempted to get Grand Jeanne instead, since I at least thought that it was much more rare for that gala pool to line up with big free summon events and stuff, so it’d be more annoying to try and spark her later, but after going through the records of past banners, I remembered that at the end of each year we get a flash gala at the end of December during roulette season, right before the new years premium gala. I was already planning to try and save a spark for around then anyway, so I figured at that point I may as well get Narmaya now, and just commit to sparking Jeanne at the end of the year. If I get lucky I might also have a full spark saved by the time the regular December flash gala with new Christmas characters comes out, so I could maybe spark her then and get some new Christmas units along the way.

As for the suptix, I’ve been wanting Vane for ages just because I like him, so even though there’s definitely better options, even within the water element alone, it was a pretty easy choice. I was kinda tempted to pick Shion instead to make fire GW easier, but that’s the only place I’d ever use her, and since I’ve already started switching over to my Ixaba Agni grid, I should be able to OTK there pretty easily without her, and I don’t think I have the overall grid strength needed to achieve a one-button OTK with her, so there wouldn’t even be a huge difference between what I could accomplish with her now and what I can already do with the characters I have.

Anyway, all that aside, the lottery sure was completely awful in every way, lol. I guess there’s no point going into much detail about it since there’s already been so much discourse about it, but I’m 100% in the camp of hating how it was handled, and I empathize with everyone who decided to quit over it. I’m not as upset with how they handled the compensation as a lot of people are, but I get where they’re coming from, and I don’t think it’s entitlement to complain about how everyone got given a free T3 ticket as compensation, when the whole point was that there was a big disparity between the people who got nothing, and the people who got a T3 or higher prize. I think it would have been fine if everyone got the free T3 ticket when the results got announced, but the fact that this only happened because of the backlash does a lot to change the situation.

I don’t really think there’s much they could reasonably do to fix the situation after this, though. If they try and provide even more compensation, it might just get out of hand. The bottom line is just that the whole set-up of the event was fucked up from the start, and everyone should have been guaranteed this ticket right from the start so we didn’t end up in this mess.

But really I just think that the whole issue of ‘you can’t just expect a free high-tier ticket, since that’d be like everyone getting a free Belial/free spark/free Sierotix!’ just goes to show how badly the event was set up. Usually in events like this there’s a fairly linear progression in value between reward tiers as they get rarer, but I honestly think that all three of the higher tiers ended up being effectively the same value because of just how insane the sierotix, the 100k crystals, and Belial were. If they had even just moved the unticketable summons up to T2, it would have been a lot easier to justify giving everyone a free T3 ticket, since everything else on that tier is a lot less valuable. But they decided to include at least one insanely high-value reward in each tier, which completely fucked the balance of the tiers.

There’s also the fact that, with how the lottery worked and how they rigged people’s first 10 cards, it made the actual probabilities of winning different tiers a lot more unbalanced and weird than you’d expect. Like, it basically meant that your chances of getting at least one T1 or T3 prize were basically the same, and that you had a surprisingly high chance of getting at least one T2 prize. Which just feels like a weird way to design a lottery in the first place, and it also set up this situation where a much higher amount of people than you’d expect got high-tier rewards. I think it basically ended up being a coin flip as to whether you only got T4 prizes, or if you got at least one ticket higher than that, which is completely different to how any normal lottery works, and it meant that basically everyone who ‘lost’ was surrounded by people who got super massive prizes.

If I was in charge of it, I would have adjusted the event by taking the current T4 reward tier and demoting it to a consolation prize assigned to all of the ‘losing’ tickets, while replacing it with a tier of rewards that includes stuff like non-limited SSR characters, ticketable summons, a sunlight stone, a damascus ingot, or a medium amount of crystals. And then everyone should have gotten the guaranteed T3 ticket when they announced the results. Even if they still decided not to give everyone a T3 ticket, making the T4 pool better would have at least made the rewards closer to the guaranteed rewards we got last year. Like, if they added 10k crystals to the T4 pool, then the combo of the guaranteed two T4 tickets plus the random 10k crystals they gave out on that day would have amounted to at least 30k crystals, which is what everyone got last year from treasure rush.

I also think it was a mistake to let people get multiple of the same high-tier reward if they got super lucky, since it’s just kinda absurd to think that you could get *multiple* free sparks or sierotixes from this. But that’s relatively minor compared to everything else.

Also, the negative attitude people have towards the players that chose to quit the game and burn their accounts is genuinely really weird and gross. As far as I’m concerned, it’s perfectly fine to cut ties with something that was becoming a negative part of your life, and deleting everything in your account means you’ll be less tempted to go back to it later. It’s not like they’re hurting anyone except themselves, at the very least. And all the people I’ve seen complain about how this is going to give crews a worse time in GW if lots of their members quit are just highlighting the fact that yet another part of the problem is that the endgame in GBF is inherently designed around scoring and racing content that’s decided by who has the most advanced account.

Anyway this got longer than I wanted it to, but I just have a lot of thoughts about this, lol.

ok so due to the vibes we gettin' on this last mcl episode, i would say we're on the final line, with candy almost graduating and her relationship kinda becoming public. so, what happens after that? mcl franchise is over? are we getting ~forgotten LI's club~ a rebound? everything about ul storyline just felt so rushed and out of place and i would guess it bc it sucks and people are not that intersted anymore, and maybe beemoov realised that and is giving us and ending in just like 20 episodes

If I knew the answer to this I’d be rich! I’d sell the information to the highest bidder 😂

The way I see it, we have the following options:

A) MCL is ending soon(ish) and that’s it. The game is dead and ML is going to take its place as main BV game (and that’s probably why it’s taking so long for it to come out).

B) MCL is far from over, we’re going to follow Candy during her internship and get arcs for all the other LIs.

C) UL is over but the story is not. We’re going to get a third season either in the same format or as solo routes like in ML.

D) MCL is over but they are still going to publish events.

What do we know so far:

- BV said that UL was going to last less than HSL, so less than 40 episodes.

- Chino said that every proposal to bring the old LIs back, even in other projects, was rejected by BV.

- Chino has been asking for suggestions for future events outfits.

- Kentin’s event is going to come out at some point in the next 40 days, but no other spin-offs have been announced.

Speculations:

A character’s arc is a sub-plot related to an LI that is true whatever route the player is on. Nath had his arc and it’s now over. Because of its length and relevance to the story, it seems likely it’s the only character arc we’ve had so far, but actually if BV wanted to justify the end of MCL, we’ve had some sort of mini arcs for other characters too. Hyun had the situation with his parents’ divorce. Priya had the admission about her past and scare about her future as a lawyer. Castiel had the ons. These are not real characters’ arcs, just problems and resolutions. They’re ridiculous compared to what Nath had, but if BV is trying to end UL as soon as possible, they could decide those are everything we are going to get about the other LIs. We’ll see if we get something similar for Rayan in the next couple of episodes, it’s quite possible that this is the case.

Option A seems the most probable, but Chino has talked about future events, so we could maybe have option D. Does it make sense to have option D?

Well, on one side, when HSL was over, they stopped creating events for it. But that’s because UL had started and they couldn’t be bothered to have events for both. Not even recycling old ones. If UL is over and there’s nothing else planned, they could think about keep producing events for it.

For us players who are up to date with the game it would be a little pointless and super-easy to play, since we would keep accumulating free AP and only use them for events, thus never having to use the bank (unless for special outfits if one really still cared about clothes). But that’s the issue: how many people are really up to date? MCL might be over for us, but there are a lot of people who are way behind with episodes, and new players subscribe every day. From BV’s point of view the game is still very much alive as long as there are people playing it.

And this, guys, is the tea ☕

According to SensorTower BV had a revenue of 100K last month.

Compare it with 500K of their biggest competitor, 1492 Studio, which is owned by ubisoft.

But look at the downloads!

While 1492 Studio has more apps and a solid clientele base, BV is solely surviving on new players downloading their two main apps. Last month MCL and Eldarya had more than double the downloads of IIL main apps.

And this kids, is the reason why it doesn’t matter if MCL is ending tomorrow. The game has already 18 episodes, it will likely make it to at least 20, more than most IIL games. The important point for BV is to get out another successful app, and the way ML is structured, it’s actually 6 apps in one.

The plan is brilliant, they’re going to copy IIL model but with the rock solid base of Eldarya and MCL guaranteeing new players every month.

You know what the problem is?

Apparently, BV has currently 9 apps, add 6 ML apps, it’ll get to a total of 15.

1492 studio has 14 apps.

Beemoov has 57 employees.

1492 studio has 150-ish employees.

BV doesn’t need MCL to continue because they survive on new downloads and they don’t have enough people to keep working on it anyway.

It’s as simple as that.

(Don’t take this as religion. This is just me trying to predict BV’s behavior using logic. We know well enough that logic is not their forte.)

Taking Stock of Barracks in Fire Emblem Heroes: Part 3, Section 2 (Final)

Okay! So I took a few days off for travel and now want to finish this up. From everything above, I’ve pinpointed the 5* exclusive characters I would love to start getting merges for as well as solidifying who my official potential “projects” are. Now I need to start analyzing my priorities and go from there. The sections will be 5* exclusives that won’t need feathers for merging (barring any unexpected demotes, which is highly unlikely for the majority of these); 3-4* merge potential projects that require orbs, and 3-4* potential projects that require grails. First up, 5* exclusives.

After going through my barracks, these are the characters I have isolated as ones that I want to work towards getting to +10:

Micaiah, Mia, Nephenee, Saber, Silque, Myrrh, OG Ephraim, Brave Ike, Y!Marth, Summer Robin, Summer Innes, Halloween L'Arachel

Now, mama didn’t raise a fool. The vast majority of these are unrealistic, but I can at least use this as a guide for what to save for. So these can be further categorized into three sections: Higher Priority, Realistic Goals, and Pipe Dreams:

Higher Priority

Micaiah, +5; She just takes the least amount of merges to complete. She regularly appears on banners, and will eventually come as a pity breaker on other banners.

Mia, +3; She’s my favorite of the fast sword girls. And while she’s slowly getting outclassed in terms of raw speed, she has good balanced defenses and her weapon can still give her a niche. I also wouldn’t be surprised if she lands a resplendent alt at some point.

Realistic

Nephenee, +2; I’ve thought about it, and I let Nephenee’s -Spd bane distract me from her for too long. She’s at +2 with a Spd boon now, and still holds up stats-wise. Her attack is still a little low, but the armor effectiveness in her weapon more than makes up for that. The problem is that she’s on a banner right now that only lasts today. I can’t +10 her just today, but I need to try for a few merges.

Saber, +1; I have a major soft spot for Saber. He held my Summoner Support for a long time, and I think he has a very interesting niche in the over-saturated sword market. He’s a long-term plan.

Silque (Currently Base, could be +2); I love healers, and Silque is my favorite healer from the series as a whole. I haven’t merged her yet because she has a good staff, good special, and Dazzling Staff fodder. But I now realize that I don’t particularly care for Dazzling Staff fodder. That’s added to almost every new healer nowadays, more fodder will come.

Myrrh, +0; Myrrh is the character I wanted most for so long. The first Manakete/Dragon I ever fell in love with, and she’s relevant again. Problem is, the only one I’ve pulled is +Def/-Atk. Amazing boon, terrible bane. I need merges to erase the bane and start really building her. She’s likely in the Top 5 for priorities.

Pipe Dream

Ephraim, +0; Unless he demotes, this is a long shot. I’ve only ever pulled one and now I have other infantry lance users that out-compete him. It would be nice, though.

Y!Marth, +1; Y!Marth appearing at the same time as Bramimond really hurt my ability to justify spending for him, and now I kinda regret it. As far as sword infantries go, he’s super flexible and has great stats. His boon is +Atk, so that helps, but when he comes back, I’ll make a play for him.

Summer Robin, +0 (Will be +1 after Compile Manuals Purchased); My first ever 5* unit! Summer Robin has held a special place in my heart since I first started the game. Back when getting 5* units as a new player was actually rather difficult, I played for about 2 weeks before my first one came up, and it was Summer Robin. She’ll erase her awful -Atk bane with the Compile Manual I’ll get of her, but I’m going to start working on snagging her in the upcoming summer banners.

Summer Innes, +0 (Will be +1 after Compile Manuals Purchased); The first unit I ever spent money to acquire (purchased an orb pack with an old gift card out of desperation). His Bow unit sucks all kinds of ass, and Axe fliers are still one of the rarer categories. He’ll be +1 soon (I love the limited time compile feature, it’s a much better mechanic than the long term compile option), but more merges would make me happy. He’ll be re-run soon.

Halloween L’Arachel, +0; H! L’Arachel’s art might be one of my absolute favorite in the game. Easily Top 5. Green Cavalry Mages are also almost uniformly bad outside of Gunnthra, who needs a refine to maintain her niche. The only one who might be able to compete is Cecilia, but we’ll see where she truly lands after her eventual refine. Either way, more merges for her would be incredible. Sacred Stones is next up in the Hall of Forms rotation. I don’t expect her to be an option, but she’s on the short list of SS seasonals so…there’s a chance.

Brave Ike, +2 (Could be +3); His Refine is incredible. He carries hard in AR and makes PvE content trivial. If anything, this is just to keep his stats sharp. This is mostly just an eventual “this would be nice” thing.

Now, if I take everything above and rank it, here’s what I have:

Okay, I’m fine with this. Micaiah and Mia make the most sense, since they’re the closest to being done. Myrrh, Nephenee, Saber, and Silque are all realistic and will be making appearances on banners soon (other than Silque). The rest are just guidelines; although I will be saving for Summer Robin & Summer Innes return next month, and then saving for Halloween L’Arachel at the end of the year.

Now it’s time for 3-4* Potential Projects! My first pass yielded three groups: ones I already have the copies to +10, the ones I still need copies for, and Grail units. At this point, I need to diversify my +10 units by movement type, specifically flying and calvary, with an emphasis on Player Phase units, strong Mixed Phase units, and tome users.

Here’s who I can +10 today if I desired:

Nino, PP, +5, 100k feathers needed; Benefits from being a favorite character, player phase focused, and a tome user. Slight dock for being infantry.

OG Eliwood, PP, +2, 160k feathers needed; Eliwood remains the front runner of this group if only because of favoritism. It helps that his Player Phase capabilities are now some of the best in the game when it comes to red sword users.

Donnel, MP, +2, 160k feathers needed; Again, a strong Mixed Phase character with a new refine, but that pushes him into a Player Phase role. I just can’t swing the idea of building him up for use.

Matthew, EP, +0, 200k feathers needed; Enemy Phase dagger to compliment Sothe’s Player Phase dagger niche. A favorite character, but shares movement type. Plus he requires a lot of support to really shine. Lower priority.

Soleil, PP, +0, 200k feathers needed; One of the strongest 3-4* infantry swords. Great attack and good speed, middling defenses that could be patched up with skill investment. She ranks pretty high, but has a high merge cost from my current supplies.

Ares, EP, +0, 200k feathers needed; Fills a different role than Eliwood, but makes a case given how oppressive Special Spiral + Bonfire can be. Middling priority.

Est, PP, +0 (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; I love lance fliers and Est is the only one on my short list that isn’t a Grail unit. She’d require some significant investment in terms of resources, but I’ve been thinking of making a dedicated flier team for a while, which she would shine in.

Titania, Support, +0, 200k feathers needed; I love Tactics teams and almost no one runs it better than Titania. She’d require high investment, but I’ve held onto her for years with the plan to invest, it might be time.

OG Tharja, PP, +0 (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; I really love red mages. My Lysithea sees very regular use, and Tharja’s potential on a Tactics team would be incredible. She remains a very high potential.

Soren, Support, +0 (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; I also love Chill skills, and Soren is one of only a few characters that can pull Triple Chill. I might build him with Triple Chill to see how he handles before I invest. He’s lower priority right now.

Here’s who I have on my short list for potential projects that I don’t actively have all the merges for yet:

Rath, PP, +2 (Could be +7, with a +Atk waiting for deliberation); 160k feathers needed; Rath is the closest on this list to having the merges needed. He’s currently at +2, and I only need another 2 in order to be at +10. He will continue to be higher on the list than others, if only because I’m a sucker for calvary bow users.

Altena, EP, +1, 180k feathers needed; So. Here’s the problem. I love Altena, and she’s likely a Top 5 merge project contender….but I don’t have the merges. She just hasn’t been showing up. She just has to remain on the back burner of priority until I have more merges. I’ll reassess if more start coming along.

Norne, MP, (Could be +4) (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; Norne checks a lot of boxes for me: Infantry, Great Stats, Mixed Phase potential, Bow User. I still need 6 copies to make her +10, but I need to start investing in her now. I know she sits in the exact same space that Altena does, but even having a few more merges changes the calculus. The major major problem is that none of the 5* units I’ve decided are priorities are colorless except for Silque. So the likelihood that she turns up on pulls is less likely. But I think my heart doesn’t really care.

Tethys, Support, (Could be +5, No 5*), 220k feathers needed; Tethys makes this list due to her Support potential. Colorless infantry dagger is mostly filled for me, but she sticks out in my mind. I might just build her low at first to see how I like her, similar to Soren.

I’ve been avoiding this for a long time. I never spend grails because I’m worried the perfect Grail Unit will come along and it’s blinded me to the number of amazing Grail Units that have already come along, and some of these Grails are starting to burn a hole in my pocket. Now it’s time:

Astram, PP/Support, +2, 160k feathers, 2200 grails; I’ve been using Astram in Arena this past week and I’ve really changed my mind about him. His performance is very solid, and he handles a ton of things on his own. He also slots into the mercenary/knight side of sword user instead of myrmidon, which I’ve always preferred. Great PRF, good stat totals; this is biased because Arena bonus unit buffs are one hell of a drug. He’s back in the running.

Joshua, MP, +2, 160k feathers, 2600 grails; Making a completely flip-flopped statement from earlier, since Joshua is on the myrmidon side of sword users, but Joshua’s always been a favorite of mine, and I stupidly used one way back for Windsweep on Sothe…of all things. He’s in line for a weapon refine soon, and depending on how they treat it, could launch him into contention again. He remains a strong front runner. Also, there’s a strong chance he’ll be the Grail option in the upcoming SS Hall of Forms. I would love if it’s either him, Lyon, or Valter; that would be incredible.

Black Knight, MP, +2, 160k feathers, 2200 grails; Obviously TT/GHB were originally conceived of to give us fun side characters and villains, and the Black Knight remains near the top. I don’t usually use Armor units, but he’d hold his own very well, especially considering the number of Fighter skills that exist.

Fallen Ashnard, EP/MP, (Could be +2, No 5*), 180k feathers, 2200 grails; The main thing going against Fallen Ashnard right now is how new he is. So his investment will remain high for a while. But it’s hard to ignore how well his stats turned out. Great villain from my favorite series and it’s hard to not be drawn to him. Plus sword fliers are either 5* forever locked or like…Palla (aka Moonbow fodder). He’s got a great niche.

Valter, PP, (Could be +4), 120k feathers, 1650 grails; Another favorite villain from a favorite series in a unit type that is treated poorly by IS. His speed doesn’t hold up, unfortunately, but he’s very likely due for a refine soon, and he could be a part of the upcoming Hall of Forms. He’s higher on the priority list because of his status as a favorite unit, but I should honestly wait for the refine to decide.

Cormag, PP, (Could be +2, No 5*), 180k feathers, 2200 grails; The second in a run of lance fliers with generic stats that seemed to last for several months. Cormag has such an interesting character arc in his game, and it’s a shame the way he was treated. To that end, he has a workable stat spread (I just wish his Res was higher). He ranks high on characters I like, which is why he’s on the list to begin with.

Conrad, EP, (Could be +2, No 5*), 180k feathers, 2200 grails; Conrad is on this list because of a person on my friends list who has a +10 Conrad with Distant Counter and…this boy puts in work. I love bulky units, and bulky cavalry units are few and far between. The only other Lance Calvary units that see use in my barracks are Legendary Ephraim and Dimitri, so he’d be filling a good niche in my barracks. His cost just remains really high for a character that I’m not in love with.

Death Knight, EP (Could be +3, No 5*), 160k feathers, 1750 grails; Decent villain from the most recent game with an intriguing PRF. It’s not quite as evergreen as I’d hoped, but I’ve encountered +10 Death Knights in various modes and they certainly hold their own. Less of a cost than Conrad with slightly less bulk, an interesting trade off.

Young Minerva, EP, +1, 180k feathers, 2700 grails; When Young Minerva first debuted, I was almost positive that she would be my first Grail +10. Now that she’s available, I’m hesitating. I have a strong Axe user already, just not one that flies. She’s got great speed, defense, and attack, and she’d see a lot of use. I just have to decide whether I want her more than I maybe need someone else.

Winter Jaffar, MP, (Could be +1), 180k feathers, 2700 grails; Great art as a unit, I just don’t care for Armors usually. Being a green dagger hurts him a good amount, as does the really high cost. I might just wait a bit for him, but I’m sure he’ll be outclassed in a few months anyway.

Lyon, EP, +7, 60k feathers, 750 grails; My pride and joy for a long, long time. I’m waiting to finish him off until he gets a refine, so I know which way to invest. I also love his recent alt, which has helped fill the void that my original left as he started to fall behind other units (especially Sophia, who has stomped all over him at this point).

Arvis, PP/Support, (Could be +3), 140k feathers, 1750 grails; One of the first red tome users I fell in love with, if only because of his decent stat spread and unique skill. I killed one way back for Ploy fodder, so his cost remains high, but maybe we’ll get some kind of rerun in the future.

Brunnya, EP/Support, (Could be +1), 180k feathers, 2700 grails; My AR defense was recently stomped by a Brunnya and it made me look at her in a different light. As an infantry blue tome, she’s got some competition, but she is surprisingly bulky because of her tome. I am quite intrigued by her.

Based on my analysis above, here’s where I’m coming down in terms of a road map. Everyone else isn’t necessarily out of the running, but this focuses on my direct needs for strong Player Phase / Mixed Phase units and puts my resources to best use:

Immediate Use: OG Eliwood, Soleil, Est, Norne, Fallen Ashnard, OG Tharja

OG Eliwood will get the bump first because he fills the most immediate niche and already has some investment made into him. I’ll also dedicate resources to Norne and Fallen Ashnard, since they still need time to develop but are high on my list. I also feels like I’m now making Fallen Ashnard the focus of my grails, for when he comes out in two months, we’ll see if someone overtakes him before then (likely one of the SS boys). I’ll upgrade Est and OG Tharja to test out how they perform before committing. Depending on how Est does, she’ll likely get a bump with Soleil.

Eventual Niche: Titania, Young Minerva, Brunnya

Of these, Titania is the most likely to get the bump, as she’s a favorite and would serve as a solid support unit. Young Minerva functions well at +1 and doesn’t need as much investment as others in order to perform. Brunnya will be leveled up and tested to see if she’s worth the investment.

Build Now and Wait: Rath, Altena

I’m pausing raising up Rath for now, I’ll wait until I have enough copies to fully +10 him. I love his character, but he will almost certainly stay PvE, and his current build shines there. Altena will get further looks after I get more copies.

Determine after Refines: Joshua, Valter, Lyon

I really need to watch and wait for my three Sacred Stones boys. I love all three and would dedicate resources to them, but I need to wait and see what their eventual refines bring to the table. I have the highest hopes for Lyon, since he’s proven to be popular, and they gave Sophia of all people a new life, he deserves it. Valter will likely get some extra stats and potentially Panic built into his weapon (even though he doesn’t have the HP to utilize it as much). Joshua will get some kind of refine that doubles down on his decent Resistance. Conditional DC like Saber/Say’ri would be incredible, but I’m not holding my breath. This also gives me time to continue to deliberate on who I want to spend Grails on.

I’m…..done? No, I’m not done. But this is the closest I’ve had to a game plan for this game beyond “oo! Shiny new units!,” so I’m really proud of myself. Time to spend some resources!

I’m bored and found this having been done by a blog I admire, @vinceaddams. Plus, I - like my projection-favorite Dragon Age Inquisition Character, Dorian Pavus - love talking about myself.

1. Name : I have many and much. I’m currently playing with the name Eyrelain/e (undecided about the final e) but for the purposes of simplicity and what I’ll generally answer to, just call me M.

2. Zodiac : Aries sun, Taurus moon, and either Leo or Pisces rising but I’ve never been able to get that one clear on my birth charts lol.

3. Height : 5′3" roughly.

4. What time is it ? 11:57pm as of just now - it will be much later by the time I finish this

5. Favourite musician / group ? I’ve always hated this question on these things. I barely know what I’m listening to at any given time, let alone have a favorite out of them all. I just like music.

6. Favorite sport team ? If pressed (and generally if I’m around my family) I state one of the Washington DC teams - and to be fair those are pretty much the only ones I’m familiar with. But honestly I have fallen out of touch with the sportsball games and will have to work extra hard to get back into the, ah, swing of things as it were. Mostly the only sport I give a shit about is Hockey and that’s mostly because I find the players extremely attractive. Something about Russians missing teeth just really does it for me, apparently.

7. Other blogs : @witchwraytohome is mostly aesthetic with some roughly witchcraft-y, spiritual-ish bullshit fleckled in there. @adara-et-al is where I’m trying to put shit about my original characters but I’m bad at keeping up with these things so it’s not well fleshed out yet. @lia-and-em-adventure-in-thedas is a joint blog with @sumomoblossom77 for the fic I’m working on - we’re mostly keeping references and stuff there for now, but maybe one day the fic will go up there too. Once i’m finished with it anyway.

8. Do I get asks ? lol no. Maybe one or two in a blue moon but generally those are from friends who send me DMs usually. I’m not against asks, of course, so please send those on if you have them!

9. How many blogs do I follow : 80, apparently - higher than I thought it was the last I checked but then again I have a terrible memory and do not check often.

10. Any tumblr crushes ? Nah, but not really any crushes right now either.

11. Lucky number : 3, 5, and 6 tend to be numbers that come up frequently for me and portend nice things. Multiples also count, because lucky numbers are what you make them.

12. What am I wearing right now : a pair of quickly falling apart jeggings, and a really fuckin soft old navy sweater-shirt my mom got me for xmas. it’s so soft. It’s also a lovely dark taupe color

13. Dream vacation : 1) any vacation would be a dream vacation right now. 2) I’d love to travel to Japan. And if I’m in Japan why not go ahead and hit up S Korea, and Taiwan, and China and Hong Kong, and then let’s just go ahead and get all the pacific islands, the Philippines, and head down to New Zealand to head that off there. 3) Of course that’s not taking into account wanting to go further west from there, Tibet, India, Russia, idk maybe the whole middle east. Then do I go down into Africa and start making my way through there? Clearly with the trajectory I’m on I’d start in Egypt and make my way down south from there. Or do I go the opposite direction and take on Europe? Pretty much what I’m getting at here is I’d one day like to travel the entire globe - take like...at least a year probably more, and just explore the world. Eat in every country. Enjoy life. Idk...it’s a dream.

14. Dream car : One that isn’t almost 20 years old would be nice. less than 100k miles on it would be *excellent*, but I know that’s asking for a lot. Gotta have A/C and working windows. A relatively new sound system would be great, so the radio isn’t jangly (though honestly a working radio is enough). 15. Favourite food: I’m gonna have to say steak and/or sushi. I will ALWAYS be down for either. Or Mexican food of any sort. Seriously, you want to win me over? Feed me in general. If you feed me Mexican food (god, especially authentic central or Gulf coast mexican food yaasss) I’ll be yours forever.

16. Drink of choice : If we’re talking alcohol, always a margarita. I’m a tequila bitch for sure. Non-alcoholic, diet cola (whatever brand I’m really not picky). Though I have found these fun little powder things my parents use called ZipFizz and boy howdy are those tasty as FUCK.

17. Languages : English, very little Spanish, German and French. I’ve been learning a few fantasy languages for fic I’m writing (where Spanish, German and French will come into play, so I imagine I’ll learn those more too). Oh and Latin. I know a little of Latin. It’s not a lot and it’s not great but it could be worse.

18. Instruments : I used to play piano - I technically still can but it’s not very good at all. I tried playing bass guitar which was...alright. I did not go very far with it. I played the recorder for class in elementary school like most everyone else did, and that was...interesting.

19. Celebrity crushes : no one, really, right now. I’m kinda figuring myself out a little and haven’t really processed attraction past “they’re kinda fit, wonder if they’re an alright person to get to know” and then realize that there’s no way I’d ever get to know them as a person outside of their fame and celebrity so I just kinda drop it. ‘S not worth the time or effort honestly.

20. Random Fact : All my old injuries that bother me are completely invisible from the surface - my one that crops up the most is my knee(s) but from the outside nothing looks the matter with them (unless the start swelling but that doesn’t happen as much anymore). Second most easily aggravated is my shoulder that also has no outward sign of having been an injury. Third most easily aggravated and honestly rarely rears its head unless I do something immensely stupid or it’s bitter fucking cold outside, is my right ribs. I got knocked really hard and they were cracked but not broken but I was also, like 10 when it happened and I’m fairly certain they healed slightly incorrectly. Sometimes it feels like I’ve got light bruising and sometimes it’s like they’ve just been injured (depending on the cause of the aggravation). I do not have good scars to show people to be like “yeah this acts up because I was stabbed in the jellies but it’s fine except during low-pressure weather”. I just all the sudden cannot stand up right, or reach over my head properly and I have to deal with it.

1) Ultimate Otps:

Which of them have ‘ultimate’ qualities...? GS Isaac/Alex would be kind of an ‘ultimate power’ ship, if they got a plot with twists and turns and character development and reasons to cooperate. I’d expect that more from fic than canon - so many other canons have lots of epic slow burn adventure fics for hero/villain-or-antivillain ships. But so far in GS, for those two, I’ve mostly found (good) crackfic, or non-shippy ‘they fight to the death and Isaac wins and marries Mia’ stuff that doesn’t treat them with even as much nuance as the canon.

Not that I mind mudshipping - my ultimate GS polyship would be something like Isaac/Mia/Felix/Alex(/Veriti/The Ice Queen), with interesting dynamics between every two characters in that set of four (and Mia/Veriti), even with some of the bonds possibly being platonic. Though when I’ve written long plotfic it’s very easily gotten platonic/ambivalent/angsty bc it tends so much towards drama, and conflict may drive plots (hence its abundance in plotbunnies), but I find it hard to headcanon characters getting past hurts and grudges very easily; I want to see them make the effort, but it feels like they’d need a lot of time and personal growth to get there, and I might not even figure how well they do until I’m almost 100K words in. And in some very angsty verses there’s no chance. I want to read other people’s adventure fic too, with fun ideas that manage heel-face turns or antihero plots in a slightly lighter way...

PMMM Madoka/Homura is another ‘ultimate power’ ship, if they can get to a point where Godoka and Homucifer can deal with each other as equals again, both with full knowledge of everything that’s happened and the resolve to truly save themselves, each other, and the rest of the universe. :o

Utena/Anthy is quite an ‘ultimate reality’ ship, when they find their revolution.

2) A ship you’ll always 💜??

The Harvest Moon fan in me is going ‘purple heart? that’s not a very high level of affection??’ ...but taking it as an emoji for ‘love’... without repeating anything above, pokemon Green/Red is always nostalgic (gameverse Ash/Gary, the names get a little confusing as there are localisation differences and I like the old manga and anime too but haven’t watched/read anything recent in those canons).

GS Imilshipping, too, in fic verses where they had a close bond. FE Lucia/Ilyana, I wish they had epilogue content after their support, still mean to write out a plotbunny for them sometime. Soren/Ike, of course, and Tibarn/Reyson.

ToS Lloyd/Colette/Sheena/Zelos, again with strong bonds between all of the pairs in that foursome. They did so much to help each other find hope by striving to save and trust each other, creating a new kind of salvation together.

Skies of Arcadia Fina/Aika/Vyse, Vyse/Ramirez, and Ramirez/Galcian. Never found much fanstuff for it, but it caught the imagination.

3) Current obsessions??

Lots of MadoHomu vibes after getting a oneshot written for them. Confident!Madoka makes both of them happy when they’re not dying; it’s a shame she doesn’t get much screentime as her confident and cheerful self, since so much of her time as a magical girl passes offscreen. Even while she was more unsure during the series, she demonstrated her desire to protect her friends, and Homura commented time and time again on her kindness - she loves her for it, and when she discourages it anyway, it’s because she’s come to believe that it’ll be the death of her. If they were truly safe, they could support each other so well - it could be a world away from the desperation that marked the end of Rebellion, when neither of them are at all okay. :s

Also getting quite into darkfic plotbunnies, and I know ‘darkship’ is a term in some cases for character dynamics fulfilling their worst potential, descending into violence and destruction that at least one character Does Not Want, but in the verses of those plotbunnies I guess they still fit the label of antiships better than ships.

4) A ship you never thought you’d like??

Uh, a lot of the stuff on the gs kink meme caught me by surprise, when rarepairs got suggested and the fills or plotbunnies got interesting - Alex/Ivan, Eoleo/Rief, Alex/Amiti (in a BAD IDEA way). And on lj/tumblr, Mia/Sheba was pleasant surprise too. Not that I ever had any preconceptions about disliking ships, they just hadn’t occurred to me.

In FF7, I don’t think I expected to see compelling Cloud/Seph or Zack/Seph at first, all those years ago, but I quickly found that there are a lot of good AUs and darkfic. Especially when they’re alongside other good ships like Cloud/Zack, Aerith/Zack, Aerith/Cloud, Aerith/Tifa, Tifa/Cloud etc.

5) A ship you used to like but don’t anymore:

Uh idk exactly. I used to read a lot of Buffy fic by ship to find characters whose dynamics were interesting in the show, but iirc I ended up skimming any content that was really ‘shippy’ to get to the plot and jokes and emotional bonding over real stuff, not random physical attraction, and nowadays I don’t think I’d bother skimming so much stuff just bc I hoped it’d be interesting and wanted to keep giving it a chance.

6) A ship that should be canon??

Well some that are very strongly implied but not explicitly stated feel like ‘yep that’s canon’ but could maybe use some more in-universe and author confirmation when not everyone seems to agree - Ike/Soren, Utena/Anthy in some versions of canon, etc.

7) A canon ship you hate???

I like to hate the way darkships go sometimes, but that’s what makes them an interesting story, going ‘noo’ about characters’ bad decisions, though that usually only works if they had better potential that they’re falling short of, not necessarily in a romantic sense... Can’t think of many cases where that happens in canon. Uh I think most explicitly canon relationships are either one option among many routes (and I get tired of support grinding), or I’m a bit indifferent, or if I dislike how it’s done I’d still start playing devil’s advocate and wondering how it could have been done differently if I spend any time considering it.

Oh in FE Awakening I kinda hated how Virion’s flirting in the main plot cutscenes was creepy and painted him as a bad joke, but his supports are much better and some of them are great - how do you explain liking his ships when he has such a bad start (and such bad English voice acting)? I also hated the way the player character’s support options didn’t all show up until endgame, so I missed them the first time and had to replay and wait until then to support grind, and then it all got repetitive grinding the same dlc maps so many times over just for such short supports, and the endgame marriage candidates that were most interesting (bc how the hell could the game make that work, with a head of state or a former enemy??) ended up with really rushed and unconvincing relationship development, and the child recruitment maps were hellishly difficult at that point in the endgame, and all in all it got a bit un-fun and not worth the effort. :/

8) A ship you shipped for years??

Most of the above. Also stuff like Saiyuki Sanzo/Goku, GS Alex/Felix or /Saturos, Jenna/Sheba, Karis/Sveta, Pokemon Misty/Erika, FE Florina/Lyndis, and, uh, probably stuff that I’m forgetting right now.

9) A ship everyone 😍 but you don’t care for?

...Was there anything? Some of the cliche stuff bugs me, but I’d usually think ‘what about writing the dynamic this way and maybe adding poly?’

So I have “A Year in the Life” on the brain again, and because I am in Hermione mode, here’s another really long essay on the revival revolving around the little-discussed fourth main storyline.

READ PART 1: How Luke and Lorelai have a far healthier relationship in AYTIL than in the original series

And, yes, there were four main storylines in AYITL. I love how each of them addresses something different:

Lorelai's storyline has to deal with everything in her life changing, and she is finding that she is stuck in time. Her father has died. Her best friend has left the business they started together. Her longest-serving employee wants to leave. Her daughter is drifting. Her mother is throwing every mistake she ever made in her face. Everything is happening so fast, and she can't quite keep up, and it's terrifying her. By the end of the revival, Lorelai has learned how to move forward with her life.

Emily's storyline deals with the changes in her life after Richard's death, of how to start living alone - truly living alone - after 50 years of marriage. She has to deal with her relationship with Lorelai in a way she could avoid before, because she had Richard to fall back on in regarding her opinions about her daughter. Emily learns throughout the year to become independent and learn to live for herself.

Rory's storyline deals with drifting and the displacement a lot of Millennials have in the world. Life wasn't what was promised her in high school, and through a combination of her own choices and the changing industry, her chosen career has left her behind. Rory has to find her identity all over again, and you see her stumbling through life as she comes to terms with it. This is the one storyline that's left open when everything is said and done.

But there’s that fourth, because there were four people listed in the opening credits after all, and this storyline is so subtle and so entangled with Lorelai and Emily's that you don't realize it for what it is until the very end of the revival, and that's Luke's storyline. His storyline deals with the opposite of what everyone else does, and that's the fear of getting left behind.

It's such an interesting storyline, because it picks up a subtle thread that's woven throughout the original series and tugs on it. You don't even really realize it at first, because unlike the storylines for the the three girls, Luke's doesn't start until "Spring" when Emily informs him about the trust set up in his name.

There has been some criticism of the discussion he and Lorelai have over Michel in "Spring," and about how he snaps at her for not letting Michel push her around. It's the type of behavior he displayed during season 6 that made fans bristle, and it has the same root cause. Why do things have to change? Why can't you be happy with what you have?

LUKE: How have you peaked? The place has been booked solid since you opened.

LORELAI: But it's so small. Just ten rooms and no suites, no mini-fridge and no room to grow.

LUKE: You don't need to grow.

LORELAI: Tell him.

LUKE: Why does everything need to grow? If something's good, keep it the same.

LORELAI: Yeah, but I kinda get what he's saying

LUKE: No, you don't need more. [Snapping]

LORELAI: Okay.

This sort of behavior is actually pretty unusual for a guy who constantly encouraged Lorelai from the very beginning of the series to grow. Luke was one of her very first supporters regarding the Dragonfly and repeatedly told her she is capable of branching out from the Independence Inn and running her own business. He even put $30K of his own money behind that belief before they were a couple. And he has been super proud of her achievements, go insofar as to order back issues of the magazine the Dragonfly was featured in so he could get familiar with the publication. As we saw in "Winter" with Rory's "New Yorker" article, this is an aspect of his personality that hasn't changed over the past nine years.

So why is he balking now?

Part of it is the tendency for Michel to push Lorelai around, and the fact that everyone around Lorelai is forcing her to question her own decisions and this is the breaking point for Luke. He's seen what Emily's constant second-guessing of her choices have done to her, and Michel piling on top of that isn't helping. As he pointed out, Michel has been guilt tripping Lorelai over one thing or another for 20 years. His next sentence was to immediately apologize for snapping, but he's feeling pretty protective at this point. I don't think he meant it in a mean way. Previous times Luke has made similar statements, he's walked them back pretty quickly - such as his protests over the Durham Group wanting to purchase the Dragonfly back in season 5. Back then, his response was largely the same as this: an initial snap judgment, some time to process things, then revisits it from a more rational standpoint. Really, this has been a character trait going all the way back to the beginning of the series.

But here in "Spring," this conversation serves another purpose - especially given its placement in the episode. In Broadway, you tend to have a piece of music where the major players state their desires. In "Hamilton," Alexander Hamilton does this during "My Shot." He doesn't want to throw his away his shot to change the world. Most people's "I want" songs are toward the beginning of the show. However, Aaron Burr's desires are cloaked until well into the second act of the musical. That's when we finally find out that Burr wants to be in the room where it happens. He wants to be part of these history-making decisions rather than remaining on the sidelines.

In "A Year in the Life," this discussion about Michel in the second act of this revival is really Luke's "I want" statement. He wants everything to stay the same, because life for him is good. This is established in "Winter" and why this storyline didn't start there. He and Lorelai are stable and happy, which shows in their relentless bantering and bedtime rollicking. He's the super proud dad, the one rescuing everyone when Kirk's car breaks down, the one providing support for Lorelai at Richard's funeral and when she realizes she's going to therapy with her mother. He's devoted to both Rory and April, as seen by the menu placement of Rory's article and taking several hours (and three dictionaries) to decipher April's letters. This has always been him at his best, and it's about to change.

"If something's good, keep it the same." And this is where we pick up his journey, because the next major scene that Luke has is the one where Emily calls his cell phone and specifically invites him to dinner to tell him about the trust Richard left him, and then we're off to the races.

One thing that the original series subtly points out is that everyone Luke has ever loved or cared for deeply has left him - be it through circumstances out of his control, their own need to grow, or his mistakes involving those people: His mom died when he was young. His dad died of cancer when he was in his 20s. Liz bailed on him, presumably when he was dealing with his sick dad. Rachel came back and left again and again. Anna left and didn't think he was worth telling about his own kid. Nicole bailed when she realized he wasn't all into their relationship. Lorelai left him because of their mistakes regarding April and Christopher. Jess chose his birth father and California over a stable life in Stars Hollow. Rory and April left home and made their own lives in the world.

You have someone who, at the age of roughly 50, is convinced that he will always be left behind, that he isn't worthy enough to stay for. Luke has severe abandonment issues. Yeah, Lorelai and Emily weren't the only ones who needed therapy. It can be argued that out of the four members of the main cast, Luke is the one who needs therapy the most but never gets it - even though part of him recognized that need all the way back in season 4 with the self-help book.

Now you have Richard reviving Luke's insecurities from beyond the grave thanks to the trust. No matter that it's established Luke has a decent amount of money on his own - enough to offer Lorelai a $15K loan out of pocket for termite repairs, to immediately write out a $30K check for the Dragonfly, to drop $100K on a building without any sort of financial issues. He was able to afford renovations to the diner and apartment twice without any sort of financial issue, and helped pay for renovations on the Crap Shack twice (season 6 and at some point between "Bon Voyage" and "Winter".) That really nice stove now in their kitchen isn't cheap by a long shot, and I doubt Lorelai was the one to pick it out or spend the money on it. He's floating the bill for April's education at MIT, and while I'm sure she had scholarships, it's not exactly cheap.

But despite all of that, Richard is claiming through that trust that Luke still isn't doing enough to provide for Lorelai. Don't get me wrong, I think by the time of Richard's death, there is a certain amount of trust and affection between Luke and the Gilmores. Richard included him on the actuary table to begin with, and Emily called Luke a member of the family. Emily is affectionate toward him at the funeral, and while there is some awkwardness, there isn't a ton. His first instinct at Friday Night Dinner is to hug Emily, which speaks to a lot about his character growth there - that the guy who could barely hug Rory in the early seasons of the original series has shed enough of his armor to more easily show physical affection. Yes, Emily tells the therapist that he doesn't often go to FND, but this is also Emily - who has an established pattern of telling people they're not doing enough when they've done all they can. Luke could have gone to every single FND for years and Emily would still claim that he barely shows. I don't think he went as often as Lorelai, but I would wager he went probably once a month - just enough to be familiar with the house since he was wandering about doing stress home repairs at the funeral, but not with Richard's inner sanctuary (as he mentioned to Emily he's only been in there one other time).

Now Luke gets dragged into this real estate scheme and really doesn't protest it. Part of it is knowing that Lorelai and Emily are having issues, and he doesn't want to make things worse. But, deep down, part of him thinks that Richard is right - he isn't doing enough for Lorelai. And that seems to be confirmed in his mind when Lorelai starts pulling away from him. She's lying about therapy, and while they aren't the huge lies she expressed back in season 5, it's still lying. And that just adds to his unvoiced fear that Lorelai will leave eventually him behind. His response? To clam up about the trust. Piling onto all of this is Lorelai’s new belief (no thanks to Emily) that Luke isn’t satisfied with his life, though he made it very clear in “Winter” that he was.

In "A Year In the Life," Lorelai never considered leaving him. It wasn't an option on the table from her perspective. That was all coming from him. Yes, she second-guesses how she treated him, and that her own selfishness led to him having a life he didn't want - hence the surrogacy subplot and their fight in the diner in "Summer" - but she never thought of leaving him. Even at the very beginning of "Fall," when she's babbling to his voicemail, her thoughts are of getting herself straightened out and coming back home. Contrast how Lorelai treats Luke at the beginning of "Fall" versus "Partings." She was going out of her way to avoid him in that episode until their ultimate confrontation that ended the engagement. When she's on the hiking trip in "Fall," she leaves rambling voicemail messages and defends him to the strangers she's hiking with. It's not the actions of someone planning to bail.

As I wrote a couple months ago, "The Wild trip was never about Lorelai figuring out if she was going to end the relationship. It’s Lorelai finding herself so she can deal with all the emotional crap thrown at her in the past year. She goes when she does because she realizes that she’s fighting with her daughter and that if things keep going the way they are, she could very well permanently damage her relationship with Luke."

But Luke doesn't see that, because there is no precedence in his life for this sort of thing. When he sees people growing emotionally, he knows they will walk away from him.

LUKE: You know, there's been some, uh ... Between us, it's been

JESS: Communication problems?

LUKE: Exactly.

JESS: Never experienced that myself. Maybe she wanted a vacation.

LUKE: Yeah, from me. From us.

JESS: No. No.

LUKE: Uh, she's been keeping things from me.

JESS: Guy things?

LUKE: No. Other things. Like, she's been she's been going to a therapist. Do not say, 'It's about time.'

JESS: I did not say it. I thought it, but that's the way my mind works.

LUKE: Ah, we've been arguing, like sniping. And, we never sniped, you know. We never picked at each other in public and put each other down and made other people look at us like, "Oops, what's going on?"

JESS: I don't like you using the word "oops."

LUKE: I don't like me using it either. I never used the word before. Now I'm a guy who snipes at his girl and uses the word "oops."

JESS: Well, when does she get back?

LUKE: Three weeks. It's the longest we've been apart since we got together.

JESS: You might be wrong.

LUKE: You think I'm wrong?

JESS: Hey, I'm just hearing headlines.

LUKE: Lorelai Gilmore decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail to figure some things out. What's that sound like?

JESS: It sounds like she's leaving you.

LUKE: Yeah.

Way back in season 4, we are treated to two significant excerpts (and some smaller ones) from the self-help book that Luke purchases. The second excerpt is the one that everyone latches onto, because that's when Luke realizes his feelings for Lorelai.

But the first one is the one that comes into the play in the revival. It's the lesson that Luke never learned, and the single thing that causes him to screw up all his significant relationships:

MAN ON CASSETTE: It's going to take work. It's going to take introspection. You're gonna have to learn new things -- how to be your own best friend, how to treat your damaged psyche with a little kindness, how to say, "hey, pal, you're worth it. You mean something to someone, and you deserve love." That is the key. If you crave love, then you deserve love. Say that to yourself. If I crave love, I deserve love. [Luke sighs deeply.] Now, how did that feel coming out? I'll bet it was hard. I'll bet you felt ridiculous. Some of you may even have been incapable of saying it at all. Try again.

LUKE: I'm not incapable. I just haven't been hit in the head with the Oprah stick lately.

And that's the lesson Luke never learned. He honestly doesn't believe he is worth fighting for, and his own sense of self worth is utter crap. It's why he doesn't react to Lorelai's pleadings in "Partings" until it's far too late. It's why he lashes out at her in season 6 and becomes overly controlling. It's why he just goes along with the cruise, gets married, then never really tries to make the marriage work with Nicole. It's why he dealt with April so badly at first and couldn't figure out how to integrate his relationship with his daughter with his relationship with his fiancee and her daughter.

His talk with Jess is the first time that he openly admits that he is terrified of Lorelai leaving him again, and shows us how he really feels about himself - he's tired and lost and doing things he knows is out of character. He feels like he is the root of Lorelai's issues and that he's the one holding her back. But because of this, because he's finally acknowledging his own fears, he's able to address them. This culminates in the reiteration of his initial "I want" statement when Lorelai returns home in "Fall." This is the culmination of his entire story arc, because he's finally taking a stand for himself.

LUKE: I am not unhappy, okay? I am not unsatisfied. You think I'm unhappy and unsatisfied, and I can't convince you that I am not! I mean this right here is all I will ever need. I never thought that it would happen. That you and me that we would happen. But we did. Listen, I know I am not the easiest guy in the world to build a life with and to share a house with, but there is no one who will be more here for you than me. I will never leave. I will never think about leaving. I will do whatever it takes to fix what's wrong."

The speech in "Fall" is beautiful, necessary, but also in a way pointless. Lorelai has already decided they should get married. She never thought of leaving him, which is why she just kind of gives him this baffled look throughout all of it. He wasn't going to change her mind about anything, because it was made up all along.

But what the speech does is put the cap on Luke's storyline and what he learned through his talk with Jess. He finally acknowledges that he as a person is worth fighting for and so is their relationship, then actually does so - which is far different from his actions post-"Wedding Bell Blues" and post-"Partings." Yes, Luke also made a big damn speech at the end of "The Long Morrow," but it was also different. He doesn't put forth the effort to say he will fix whatever is wrong with them, just that he moved too slow. It's capped with him walking away again when Lorelai reveals she slept with Christopher. They never really talk about it in the aftermath, as he just makes barbs at her when they run into each other in the next episode. Luke never went to the effort to really find out what was wrong and to see if there was a chance they could move past this. They eventually do, as they apologize to each other in "Hay Bale Maze," and Luke in "Summer" finds the idea of Lorelai cheating on him preposterous, so clearly everything regarding that was resolved off-screen after "Bon Voyage."

In "Fall," Luke finally fights for his relationship because he's finally fighting for himself. He's not going to be left behind again, and he will do whatever it takes to avoid making that same mistakes again and again. This is when he starts to recognize his own self worth, and for the first time in his life, he is truly all in.

And that's a beautiful storyline - to discover that you are a person worth fighting for. That change doesn't mean you have to be left behind.

Some Mass Effect LE thoughts

So basically, Mass Effect is, if not my favorite series ever, easily in my top 5, and I’m really happy to be playing it again! I’m about 1/4 through ME3 right now and here are some thoughts about LE and my general Mass Effect history: --I haven’t played the series for about 5 years, so it’s nice to come back to it! --Like most PS3 players, I started with ME2 and only went back to play ME1 years later. I’d only played it once before this, so I hardly remembered it. --The absolute unnecessity of loot in that game! Boy. --But then you get to 2 and it’s like ‘hey Illusive Man, where my mods?!’ --The ME1 armor? It’s... it... it looks like pyjamas? I didn’t really think about it until ME2 rolled around and finally Shep looked like she could take a hit. --Oh yeah, let’s talk about that ME1 standard femShep. I hate to be cruel, but am I the only one who hates her? The thing is, I loved her design for ME3 originally. The box art especially? Gorgeous. Then I booted up ME1LE and she looks like she had plastic surgery. Am I crazy? Am I misremembering? I had to start over the game and make a new Shep because 10 minutes in I just couldn’t stand looking at her mouth. I glanced at her when I started up ME3LE and I think she looked a little more natural? But still not... quite right, I feel. --I ended up modeling my Shep after my OC (like always) so she’s a little goofy looking, but I love her. --Because I NEED the trophies, I was sure to romance someone in ME1. However, I forgot the order of things and kinda thought the romance happened before Virmire (dummy; why would I think that?). So I was like “yeah cool, romance Kaidan, then get him killed, and I can then romance Garrus with no guilt. Oh, oops, wait. Can’t do that.” So I had to sacrifice Ashley. Sad. And guilty too. --Initially (probably due to playing ME2 first) I didn’t much care for Ash or Kaidan, but talking to them in ME1, I actually like them both a lot. (Husband insists they’re meant to be together. I can’t strictly disagree.) I think they’re both more complex than they seem at first, and I think they deserve growth. --ME2. Romanced Garrus. I mean, obviously. Gosh I forgot how short his romance scene was though haha. --ME2 is just my comfort zone, tbh, I’ve played it so much. Few surprises there, except a few things you don’t see if you didn’t play ME1, which I usually hadn’t. --EXCEPT. I forgot some of the things about the ending, liiiike... how your companions’ survival depends on INVISIBLE MATH. I was doing great. I’d done all the side quests, loyalty missions, and upgrades. Then just as the trophy dings after the final battle: Tali’s dead on the floor. --AND THEN THE GAME CRASHES. --I’m raging, but I have to redo the whole damn thing either way. So I start over from the start of the Collector Base. I realized my mistake was sending Zaeed to escort the crew. Gotta send Kasumi instead. But this time I mix up the other roles a little, for funsies. Have Zaeed lead the second fireteam instead of Jacob. Looks like it’s all going well, and then... oh, oops, Zaeed dies. Shiiiitttt. So I start over and go with the standard options again. Samara does the barrier, Jacob leads the fireteam, Kasumi takes the crew. I blast through it all for the third time, and finally nobody dies (and I get to save Garrus from falling off a cliff; the time before it’d been Mordin). (Mordin and Garrus are my ME2 dream team; I’m the biotic.) --ME3. A sigh of relief for the smoother combat, the smoother conversations, the more natural and cinematic animations. The gun mods. The level-up system. It’s clear that they combined elements of both 1 and 2, and it’s a lot nicer overall, imo. --I think I accidentally flirted with Kaidan when I was just trying to be nice, uggghhh. How am I gonna break it off with him? Later he’s like “so was there something between you and Garrus?” and I choose “I’m sorry”, which is like... WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Like, I AM sorry, but I don’t apologize! Kaidan, you and me? we’re through!! Where’s the We’re Just Friends Okay option??? Yes, I know we had a steamy night once three years ago but it was just for the trophy, I’m sorry. Garrus is my real space husband; I’m sorry for leading you on. smh --And that’s about where I’m at. --Oh but of course I’m loving every interaction with EDI and/or Joker. Just love that Enemies to Lovers 100k. ‘She saved my life now we’re besties’? Perfect. And Joker’s response when you ask if he knew she was gonna get a body. “Do you think I could’ve kept that to myself?! *gazes lovingly at EDI* I woulda baked a cake.” I love them. --BUT ALSO --Lordy this game crashes a lot (on PS4). In fact, it crashed while autosaving during Zaeed’s loyalty mission (which is hard enough already), and it CORRUPTED THE SAVE DATA. I’ve never had that happen, in 12 years of ‘next gen’ gaming! Thank god I had a few redundant saves, so I only had to redo that mission and not hours of the game, but yikes. --I miss the multiplayer. --Other than that, I’m happy. =]

REAL Vintage Guitars

I had a gig on Friday. Nothing special, just some little bar in a shitty part of Cleveland. Regardless, I was pretty amped up for it, for whatever reason. Spent the better part of Friday afternoon going over the setlist and making sure that my tone was dialed in.

Was in a pretty solid state of mind when it all got thrown to shit. We knew the other band pretty well, and when I showed up, the other band’s guitarist shoves an original 1956 Gibson Les Paul in my hands and says “you should play this for your set.” Which, yea of course.

Over the years, I have had a ton of experience with true vintage guitars running across the spectrum. So today I wanted to talk about what the real deal is with vintage guitars...

This particular 1956 Gibson Les Paul was just bursting with mojo. I didn’t change pickups the entire set, staying in the middle position the whole time because there wasn’t any reason to switch it sounded so great.

It was one of those experiences that you hear about that’s given vintage guitars such a reputation and legacy. Why every major guitar maker has vintage inspired lines, even going so far as to simulate the wear of a well-worn instrument. Vintage guitars have almost this Excalibur type mythos about them...as if they were drawn from a stone.

And the market for them reflects this. A guitar in the condition similar to the one I played on Friday would be valued anywhere from $25k to $40k. A 1958 Les Paul will start at $100k. A 1959 will start at $200k.

Is this madness?

God it’s hard to answer “yes.”

But yes, it is madness.

Lets sprint past the typical overtures of supply and demand, and the idolation of our heroes’ instruments. Nostalgia and madness fuel a significant portion of this grotesquerie of capitalism, but not all of it. I can’t in good faith come here and say, after an hour+ of playing a 1956 Les Paul, that I could have just gone to a guitar store and pickup an equivalent instrument.

This 1956 LP was unlike any I’ve compared it to. I’ve directly compared a 1969 Les Paul Custom (the black ones) to their modern equivalents, and it was still no contest. The 1969 version was a man amongst boys.

HOWEVA...I have played some vintage Les Paul’s that were absolute donkeys. One of the worst guitars I’ve ever played was a 1962 Gibson ES-335...it was so bad that I don’t know how a restoration would improve it, because if it was restored they’d have to basically rebuild the thing into a new guitar. It was as much of a dog as a guitar can be...the only sounds it made were woofs and farts.

So no, simply being a vintage guitar doesn’t make you good. It’s dumb to even think that...like modern manufacturing techniques wouldn’t drastically improve the quality and consistency of output. But there’s still something there...

Well what?

Some of it’s easy to explain. This 1956 LP couldn’t have weighed more than 8.5 lbs...which for Les Paul’s is a featherweight. And, like this one, most Gibson Les Pauls from this era are lighter than modern ones...simply because they farmed a different species of African mahogany, and overfarmed it making it unavailable for later models.

Some of it’s the nature of handbuilt instruments and/or the natural passage of time. Think of how uncomfortable a pair of well made dress shoes are out of the box...stiff leather, soles that haven’t broken into your feet yet...but a few months later, those shoes are the most comfortable pair you own. A few years later, you look at them with the same pride you might a successful child.

And some of it’s just shit like being a “Wednesday Car.”

Not all vintage guitars are the same either.

Gibsons are handmade instruments, lovingly put together by craftsman with year of experience, using decades-old techniques and materials, and are so ingrained in the fabric of the 20th century’s music, you can’t imagine them not being a part of it. The second half of that also applies to Fender, the first doesn’t.

A vintage-styled Fender vs. a true vintage Fender is no contest. You buy the modern one. Fenders are parts guitars. Tools, not works of art. The idea of paying more than $3k for a Fender-style guitar is fucking asinine, let lone five-figures. The idea that the person putting a Fender together has a meaningful impact on the quality of the guitar is silly. If you can use a screwdriver and a soldering iron, you can build a Fender.

Do you know how to properly set and glue a neck tenon joint? Didn’t think so. It’s not vintage, but you can tell the difference in the philosophy of each instrument maker by their top custom shop output. Both these are “aged” examples.

Fender’s “name guys” just beat the shit out of a regular Strat, but beat it up in a way that kinda looks natural? I dunno, that doesn’t look natural at all to me. It’s still the same old woods, the same old screws and bolts with almost zero actual handiwork. This will run you north of $8k.

Gibson’s aged version by its “name guy” is a lovingly recreated every step of the way. The woods are purposely selected from crops of reserved woods kept in humidity controlled environments. Simply putting the maple top cap (the figured wood part on the front of the guitar) requires more precise work than putting an entire Fender guitar together. And while Fender’s masterbuilt aging looks hideous and unnatural, this looks positively organic. This will run you about $8k.

Point being, the amount of true, individual handiwork on Gibons is lightyears beyond what Fender does. And because of this it doesn’t make any sense that vintage Fenders are so highly valued. You’re more collecting serial numbers than an actual instrument.

All this said, I can’t sit here and say that original vintage models are not deserving of their reputation.

I can’t really put this into words but the guitar I played on Friday was unlike any non-vintage Les Paul I’ve ever played in my life. It was miles better, and I didn’t even really give it a fully thorough exam because I didn’t really even need to. I played a Les Paul that was the modern version of this...you likely wouldn’t be able to tell the two apart from a quick glance...and remember going BLECH! and giving it back to the guy at the guitar store to hang up.

If your guitars are put together with a screwdriver, you don’t need craftsmanship and skills hewn over decades. But if they’re glued together, using beautiful woods, you better believe the guy putting it together matters.

Unfortunately, the tradeoff is that you’ll find much greater levels of consistency with Fender vs. Gibson. That “Wednesday guitar” might be leagues better than a “Thursday Gibson.” You just don’t know.

BUT when you have one of those holy grail Gibsons in your hand, you absolutely know the second you strike a note. I wish I could put this into words better, but it’s just such a constellation of these intangible qualities, it’s very difficult. Frankly, the thing I can’t get over was simply how light the guitar was...something that really doesn’t register when thinking about the qualities of a guitar.

However, if you’ve spent time with guitarists, you’ll likely hear refrains about how great Les Pauls sound, but how nobody wants to play them because of how heavy they are. Well, this Les Paul was so light, I literally couldn’t stop thinking about how light it was and how I could’ve played it for hours. You don’t think you can “play a guitar for hours” if it’s heavy as shit, let me tell you...

At the end of the day, vintage guitars aren’t going anywhere.

You don’t see these types of guitars in the hands of players much anymore because they’re fragile, valuable and impossible to replace. The fact I played a $25k guitar in a shitty Cleveland bar is borderline insanity. You could probably buy the bar for $25k.

It’s the “impossible to replace” part that makes them so valuable. You can get hundreds of reissues for relatively cheap, but the supply of guitars made in 1959 has been declining each of those decades. You think the supply of them was low to begin with? Now think of the parts cannibalism that went down during that time...

You can’t argue with supply and demand from a logical perspective, but you can from an artistic one. There was a mojo about this guitar that I’ve rarely felt in others. I remember a 1979 Gibson Super 400, my Fender Eric Johnson Strat (played dozens of EJ’s since then, and none resonated with me like mine), a 1957 Gibson Les Paul goldtop reissue (made by the Tom Murphy guy who did the LP above) and a Nickerson archtop (an extremely niche artisan luthier). That’s literally it.

What price do you pay for that mojo? Whatever that price is, add to the madness you’ll encounter trying to find that same vibe in a guitar you’re comfortable taking outside the house.

Which is why I don’t believe that vintage guitars are worth it, mojo aside. I’m brutal to my guitars...they get beat up and worn because I’m practicing 4 hours a day at a minimum these days. I can’t think of resale value because my guitars are in a condition that won’t get any resale value. Practically speaking, vintage guitars aren’t very practical.

Despite all that logic laid down, there’s something about vintage guitars that you can’t find in modern ones. That intangible something has a value...I just can’t tell you what that value is, and if it’s worth it. You either know if it’s worth it or not. And if you get screwed? Well, that’s your own fault.

Equation for ICO’s Expected Funding Level

With an Excel file and industry market map for separating success from failure

I. Setting the Stage

We’re going ever deeper into the ICO space here at The Mission and it’s child publication, Humanizing Tech. What started 6 months ago on The Base Code Fund’s investment into Ethereum as well as various conversations with a few knowledgeable players in the industry, from hedge funds to new ICO practitioners to even some folks building a new exchange, it’s always been our goal to open-source the knowledge and tools that we use.

Today we continue that tradition with a simple, new tool for you to gain at least a little bit of knowledge from.

After doing a number of Google searches and research over the last month, we had yet to come across a simple market map that lists out how many ICOs are in each specific industry vertical. For example, 17 in the finance space, 10 in the protocol layer, 2 in file storage, 3 in crowdfunding, etc.

The goal is to get a sense for what areas are being overpopulated with ICOs and which areas haven’t been touched yet (a lot).

It seems almost like there are parallels between the early internet where you’d have a listicle of hundreds of websites until it got to be too much and search was invented. And then, of course Google + ads = mountains of cash.

So, we started looking at various lists and figured we’d get started with the Smith + Crown, since they are viewed widely as reputable and have already done some curation of their own. We extracted their list into Excel and started running an analysis on it, which is what follows.

Note: please update me in the comments if you have better data you can cite on any of this. Here’s my ICO List Excel File should you want to continue the analysis.

II. ICO Funding Equation

From the data set we extracted there were a total of 200 recent ICOs (i.e., 2017-ish), both currently offering tokens and ones that had closed. I have a feeling Smith + Crown removed the scams and BS ICOs, which is why we don’t see a list of 800 total coins that I’ve read are currently being traded.

Out of these 200 ICOs, only 42 have raised anything meaningful (more than $200K). That means your probability of success if you do everything right technically, market yourself using a standard approach and have a decent team, is 1 in 5. That’s a 20% success rate.

To put this into perspective, a meaningful VC-backed Seed round, on average, is about $1M from PitchBook data. But the success rate, I can tell you from experience, takes much, much longer, requires much more tech and customer traction, and is far, far harder.

So, I’ll take a 1 in 5 probability of funding success any day of the week with far less up front work.

If you look at that graph of successful fundings above (in white), you’ll notice that it’s pretty much a straight line of revenue from $0 to $25M unless you are one of the Big 3 who raised approximately $230M, $150M, and $100M.

So that curve is what you often hear in the startup and VC industry. Everything follows a Power Law curve. That’s the picture above. A few massive winners, and then a bunch of smaller players.

For example, the bottom 42 companies raised $225M in total. That’s the same that the #1 company raised. Crazy, right? It’s also the same if you add #2 and #3 together. Again, about $250M.

So, the #1 company raised about $250M. The #2 and #3 companies together raised about $250M. And the rest of the group (#4 through #45) raised about $250M. Then everyone else raises zero.

So if you raise some type of money, you have a 3 in 45 (or 1 in 15) chance of hitting a home run or grand slam. Call it 5% probability. Still not bad compared to the standard startup / VC funding game.

That’s because of human behavior. We’re lemmings. Like 5-year olds playing soccer, everyone is running around chasing the same ball. It’s the same thing playing out in public company stocks.

The top 5 tech companies together have a $3 trillion market value (Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Alphabet). Took them decades to get there, but they did it. Compare that to less than $1B market value for these recent ICOs.

The Equation. So now to the fun part, if you’re interested in STEM. The power-law regression line that predicts the amount you’re going to raise on this curve.

The r-squared is about 0.5, which is pretty good because a perfect correlation would be 1 and no correlation would be 0. But, you can tell just by looking at the chart with your eyes that it’s the right fit. (By the way, do you know that this is considered Artificial Intelligence? Yah, kinda funny when you see it like this right? Not so scary.)

2E+09 is a shorthand for 2x10⁹ or 2 with 9 zeroes behind it

x^-2.369 is where you input where you think you are going to fall along that 1 through 45 company line. So enter a number, 1 or 2 or 3 etc. That part is up to you based on your confidence of an ICO.

The actual equation predicts a company could raise $2 billion if you follow the curve out up and to the left. As so:

Which means we haven’t seen nothin’ yet for that white line of reality. But it also means that it’s only going to be 1 company who does it. And that means it’s likely going to be a full stack coin, from protocol layer (think HTTP on the web), through transmission layer (think URLs on the web), to enterprise enablement layer (think Facebook’s platform for business ads) to consumer layer (think Snapchat itself).

A tool, raised to the power of a tool, raised to the power of a tool, raised to the power of a tool.

Don’t forget, Ethereum started life as an ICO but it’s also the underlying technology enabling all these other ICOs. Like the backbone of the internet itself that you can invest in directly.

It’s ICO was only $18M if memory serves, but its current market cap is $20B. That’s in only 3 years.

To put that liquid valuation into perspective, AirBnB (the 2nd most highly funded startup of all time behind Uber) is currently only valued at about $30B after a decade.

So an ICO is growing 3x faster than one of the best startups to ever do it for some really technical protocoly something or other that very few understand compared to freaking hotels.

We’re not just in the first inning, we’re still in the first at bat.

III. The Market Map

The next step in any type of analysis like this is to start to identify the types of projects that are successful and compare them to the types that are not. In doing some, we can begin to develop a gut feel for what has a higher probability of success and what doesn’t.

As we look through the 45 companies that have been successful in 2017, a few things become immediately clear:

Protocol stuff is raising the most money. That’s because it’s still early days and the big problems are about building out infrastructure. That’s why EOS (parallel processing and scalability around transaction speed) raised so much so quickly and put them in the #1 spot.

The next big area is platforms. The ole startup platform play. Today, if you’re not a platform, yer nuthin’. So, we’re going to see platforms for everything start to play out. And then, a platform for platforms. Oy. It’s going to get messy.

The last area we’re seeing is the emergence of consumer-based coins. Something directly related to everyday people. It’s very small, and emerging, but as we know from the rest of the tech industry, the consumer side always creates the most value. It’s not the OLED display maker who is gaining all the profits, but rather Apple with the fully integrated iPhone.

I have an idea for one in the consumer space that I think makes a whole ton of sense that we’ve seen play out time and time again. It all comes back to human emotion. In this case, ego. But we’ll wait and see if someone comes up with the idea, the right approach, and executes on it.
