I do both. I’m old enough to have my preferences, and to know what kinds of stories to avoid, but I do a reading bingo in part to encourage myself to try a variety of genres. My brain is a bit recalcitrant tbh. I read by whim, switch and drop books at the drop of a hat, and will sometimes need to be enticed into actually hitting reading goals. (My reward for the bingo is to be able to buy more books lol)
I already decided my categories for next year which includes Travel, Library Discovery, Book in Translation, Cozy, Indie Published, Period/Historical, etc.
I also used to challenge myself to read a daily story, essay and poem (after Ray Bradbury) and I got into about 400 days of this before my motivation ran out. Led to some good discoveries though.
Or like, to put it in terms that the "read what you like, who cares if you exclusively read kids' stuff" crowd are at a reading level to understand:
In the book "Green Eggs and Ham," the main character insists that he will only eat things he likes, and refuses under all circumstances when presented with an opportunity to try something new. At the end of the novel [spoiler alert] he agrees to Sam-I-Am's request and tries them, and he realizes that he was depriving himself of a favorite food for years, just out of fear of disliking something he ate. He learns a lesson, moving forward, that if he tries new things outside his comfort zone, that he may dislike some of them, but will enjoy many of them, and if he doesn't try new things outside his comfort zone, he will not like anything but the one thing he already eats.
Can you think of any situations in your own life where Sam-I-Am's teachings might be applicable?

The Power of Rejection: How It Can Fuel Your Success
Motivation is a potent driving force that propels us towards accomplishing our objectives and leading a gratifying existence. There are many factors that can motivate us, such as success, achievement, love, and passion. However, there is one powerful motivation that is often overlooked and underestimated: rejection. Rejection is the act of being turned down, denied, or dismissed. It can come in…

I have some solid advice as a freshman college student who is learning about the real world. We have all heard it before. You need to step out of your comfort zone to be able to grow.
Well, sadly, it is true. Making that first step out of comfort box isn't the hardest part. To quote one of my favorite book characters, "The most important step a person can make is the next one." (Dalinar Kholin). You have to consciously make an effort to be uncomfortable until it is no longer uncomfortable.
Stepping out of your comfort zone will always be rewarded in some way. It may not be rewarded in the way you thought it would, but it will always be rewarded. I am speaking as someone with a lot of anxiety about everything. Life is short and enjoy every part you can.
This is my experience of being uncomfortable on purpose at college.
I started my first semester at college and wanted to take advantage of the workout classes that my college offers. So, by myself, I took the first step to go to a kickboxing class. I had never had the opportunity to but had always had a desire to learn. The first class was hard, and the second, and third weren't much different. It got easier after my twelfth class. Now I look forward to my kickboxing class every Tuesday. The instructor knows me by name.
One thing led to another. I met a girl at kickboxing that introduced me to the jujitsu class that was offered next door. Now I got to jujitsu every week because I like to be able to use my strength and speed in a sport that it favors.
One of my closest friends that I made here at college came from a connection that wasn't supposed to happen. A friend that I made because of another friendship I made by moving out of my comfort zone. I now spend more time at their place than my own.
I never had a chance to play DND before coming to college. A boy took me and I loved it. I ditched the boy and kept going by myself. This is an activity that I look forward to every Thursday. Now I found myself a group that likes me and respects me. Next semster, I am going to try to become a DM for the school club.
I had a bad experience of getting my car booted. I expressed that to my DM. One night, I was so scared of the risk of getting booted again. My DM said that next time that that happens, I needed to call him, and he will help me through it.
I wouldn’t have met these wonderful people if I didn’t step outside my comfort zone. It was and still is a continous stuggle with my inner anxiety. A fight that I willingly go through now because I now the good things that happen if I do.
This is my final words of advice. Be uncomfortable on purpose. It will get easier. Look around you and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

Some Miguel and Gabriella doodles form last month :) I just hadn't had the motivation to turn them into proper drawings.
But the bottom two actually are part of my headcanons:
So starting with the happy one as in the one on the right:
I headcanon that Miguel actually ended in Gabriella's universe on accident and the multiversal travel didn't exist yet (to be more precise it was invented to look for Gabriella's father because Miguel didn't know that he was dead and just assumed they like switched places or something) and he explained the whole situation to Gabriella rightaway (because there is no way to be able to fit into another dude's life without a hitch even with I was bonked in the head recently excuse).
Gabriella was skeptical but decided to approach whole situation sitcom style. Dad was replaced by awkward but caring dude with superpowers - let's help him but also try the new boundaries. So she approached with hey dad runs twice a week and I ride the bike with him. I can show you our favorite route! And then proceeded to extend the route muuuuuch beyond what was humanly possible for her dad. And then beyond what was possible for her just out of curiosity if Miguel will ask to stop. Well he didn't so now after long ice cream break he needs to carry her home because she totally absolutely is beat and cannot cycle anymore (and also this way is more fun).
And the second separate depressing au headcanon that is not as tied to the picture but I guess I'll share it here:
While the Gabriella's universe was falling apart all the spiders there just grabbed as many civilians as possible and jumped through the portals. So Gabriella and couple dozen displaced people are alive at spiders hq and things are maybe better but also worse.
Since Gabriella is alive Miguel can't go sulk in the corner in his office. He needs to put on a front for her. Which most likely doubles the pressure that he already puts on himself.
Gabriella isn't an idiot and figures it out so she also tries to put on a front.
But to add a little spider whimsy and make the whole thing a bit happier - here comes Gwen.
Miguel was just as grumpy about letting her join spider society as was in the movie buuuuut Gabriela decided that Gwen being the slightly older girl with a little bit of alternative vibe is the coolest person ever and we will be best friends. And you are a ballerina!!!! I want to try ballet too!
Which in turn forced Miguel to be nice like to other Gabriella's friends and maybe be a bit more mindful and realize that Gwen needs more than place to stay and new friends and coworkers. She is too young to just jump into adulthood. She needs her father or better father figure.
And he tries to dump that on Peter B which doesn't work because Peter suffers form serious case of baby brain but also sees Gwen more like a equal adult and friend.
Besides the idea of Miguel trying to be nice and failing at because he approaches it form his experience with Gabriella standpoint while dealing with teenager is kinda fun and I like it.

Last weekend we had the most wonderful day doing 1900 historical reenactment with these lovely ladies we had the pleasure to know! 🥰 We walked around royal gardens, watched the air balloons take off, played with the horses and chickens and had an amazing picnic in a beautiful estate! It was such a dream 😭 I look forward to more incredible events with Anacronicos ❤️
