Float Away- Rhett Abbott x Reader
Rhett Abbott x reader smutty drabble... I feel so rusty but my wonderful friend @hederasgarden really inspired me the other day to work on this... the idea itself really belongs to her as well as she initially wrote the idea, and this is my take on it (with her permission of course)
Content warnings: NSFW content (18+ please), overstimulation, afab reader, reader has enough hair to pull, pet names .. please let me know if I missed any

âCâmon darlinâ, just let go, I got you.âÂ
Rhettâs calloused hands gripped firmly at the silky, tender flesh of your hips and tugged them up closer to his own. A throaty, desperate whine passed through parted lips in response to the resulting achy, warm burn that pulled at your sides, your spine stretched impossibly farther each time his strong hips rocked against your plump ass. You tried (and failed) to shake your head no, but it was no use as your cheek was pressed firmly into the mattress. âI-I canât Rhett, I canât, not again.â You panted, words nearly lost against the cool fabric of the sheets that did little to quell the ever growing flush present on your face. Heâd been at this for some time, and youâd lost count of how many times your core fluttered and spasmed around him. Still, Rhett knew your body and knew you had more to give, more to let go of.Â
The warmth of his hand crawled over the curve of your ass and kneaded the flesh, his eyes blown with lust at how pliant you were in his grasp. His strong hand continued its path along the sinew of your spine, following each dip and curve until it settled between your shoulder blades. With just enough pressure to steal your breath away, he pressed down on that spot, your chest sinking further into the mattress.âYou can, and you will.â His voice, like warmed honey, served to ease the tension that lingered in your frame.Â
Behind you, his weight shifted closer and his body caged you in. A warm puff of breath tickled at your skin, his hand soon replaced by his lips in the center of your back. There he placed a light, teasing kiss, serving to ground you in the moment. âRhett I-â Your eyes shined with unshed tears that finally rolled down the side of your face as you screwed them shut.
âYou will because I told you to. Donât forget, I know exactly what you need.â He warned, his voice thick with need. Rhett held back and ignored the tingling sensation that steadily grew at the base of his spine. This wasnât about him. He could hold off a little longer if it meant that he could get you to that headspace you desperately craved.Â
You were close, body strung taught like a bow, your muscles trembled with every thrust and touch. Your mind hummed with the desire to submit, to give in to his will and just float away. Yet you fought against the current, unable to allow the ebb and flow to drown out the rest of the world. Rhett threaded his calloused fingertips through the roots of your hair and pulled, winding the tendrils into his grasp tight enough to force your head back. Pain pricked at your scalp and fresh tears collected at the corners of your eyes. A sharp gasp was music to Rhettâs ears, he knew he had you right where he wanted you.Â
âCâmon Baby, do it for me.â He pleaded through a smile.Â
Rhettâs free hand wound around your hip and buried itself in the velvet heat between your legs. His finger stroked against your clit with firm steady movements and your core pulsed in response. His hips thrusted faster as he threw more weight and strength into you. Unable to stave off the tightening coil that sat like a heavy weight low in your abdomen, you gave in and allowed your body to relax into your boyfriend.Â
âOh, I-!â You came with a cry, fingers fisting at the sheets you were pressed tightly into.Â
âI know, I know.â He shushed, his own pleasure chasing after your own.Â
For a moment, the only sound that filled the room was your combined heavy pants and the occasional groan from Rhett as your core still fluttered around him. He took a moment to compose himself and ran his fingers through his hair, pushing the dirty blond locks away from the beads of sweat that gathered on his forehead.Â
A heavy, sated warmth spread through your body, weighing down your limbs to the point where you werenât sure if you could move them on your own accord. Rhett was two steps ahead of you though as he gently guided your hips back down against the mattress and stretched your stiff, sore legs out. You were pure putty in his hands. âThatâs it, thatâs my good girl. You did so good for me.â He whispered, hands gently caressing and rubbing back the life into your legs.

Need a Favor
Rhett Abbott
Synopsis: Rhett does more than hurt his shoulder when he's bucked off a bull during competition. While his wellbeing is in question, your biggest hurdles are his family and his pesky ex that constantly call you into question.
Notes: My first foray outside Top Gun. I've had this kicking around for quite a while and finally got the inspiration to finish it. It felt Rhett-Outer Range coded, so here we are! Influenced by the Jelly Roll song Need a Favor.
Warnings: Bull riding, religion; religious inaccuracies; medical inaccuracies; mentions of blood.
Word count: 5.3k.
The arena was electric. The cheers of the crowd, the clattering of the chutes, the grunts of the bulls. There had to be more people in this arena than in all of Wyoming.Â
Then it died.
The silence was deafening. My eyes never left his slumped form as I charged down the stands. People parted like the Red Sea, allowing me the most direct route. My legs were gracious, bracing me as I dropped the eight feet into the arena and then sprinted toward him.
The medics had yet to arrive and the wranglers stood back as I approached. I dropped to my knees at Rhettâs side. His body was contorted in an unnatural position. His hat on the ground beside himâcrumpled. Blood trickled from his hairline.
It would be a miracle if he didnât break his back. âRhett? Baby?â My fingers trembled as I reached out to touch his shoulder. He didnât move. My vision began to blur, and I did my best to contain the tears threatening at my waterline. Still shaking, I pressed two fingers on his neck just below his jaw. My entire body untensed as I felt a thready pulse. âHe has a pulse,â I stated to myself.Â
Then I saw it.Â
A sizable puddle of blood. Panicked, I pushed him over to find the stain on his shirt blossoming near the bottom edge of his vest. Without a second thought, I shoved my hand between his vest and shirt until I felt a tear in the fabric and then jagged flesh the wound.Â
The medics arrived and pulled me out of the way. One of the chute hands held me by the elbows as we watched Rhett be braced and loaded onto a stretcher. Then she handed me off to a paramedic who helped me into the ambulance.Â
I sat quietly and watched the medic fuss over Rhett. He was stableâfor now. âDo you want to hold his hand?â The man offered. All I could do was stare at him as I balled my handâthe drying blood pulling at my skin. Clad in rubber gloves, the medic tucked Rhettâs hand in mine.Â
Sitting in the ambulance, clutching his hand, my vision began to blur again. Warm streaks painted my cheeks, and I felt the droplets as they leapt from my jaw. Tears dotted my jeans.
The medic was doing his best to soothe me while monitoring Rhett. His voice was white noise as I gazed at Rhett. He hadnât moved. His mouth didnât twitch. His eyes didnât dart behind his lids. He didnât squeeze my hand.Â
Thankfully they had slowed the bleeding, but he was steadily soaking through gauze.Â
It all felt surreal as we arrived at the hospital, exited the ambulance, and I stood in the hallway as his gurney disappeared through the emergency surgery doors.Â
A breath left my body I had no idea I had been holding. Feeling was returning to my fingers and toesâreality setting in. All that was left was to wait. Wait to hear if Rhett made it out of surgery. Wait to hear if or how this would alter Rhettâs life.
Remembering I had a hand caked in blood, I looked for the nurses station. One of the nurses kindly took me to a bathroom and helped me scrub clean. She also pilfered me a scrub top. We put my stained shirt into the biohazard bin.Â
Back in the waiting room, still shaky, I dug my cell phone out of my pocket. Just as I was heading to find a seat, I heard a familiar voice. âHey! Hold on!â I turned to see the medic hurrying toward me. I kept eye contact as he approached. âI wanted to make sure you got these.âÂ
At his side, Rhettâs vest hung in one hand and my rosary sat in the palm of his other. Once it registered it was my rosary, my eyes widened. I looked between him and his palm. Then I then held out mine and he deposited the beads into it. âThank you.â I had the smallest smile.
âYouâre welcome.â He nodded, handed me the vest, and then continued back to his rig.
I clutched the beads as I turned to continue further into the waiting room. Finding a somewhat secluded corner, I tucked the vest beside my chair and pulled out my phone. My eyes trained on my screen, scanned the list of Abbotts in my contacts. Ultimately, I decided to call the house in hopes Cecilia would pick up.Â
My heart rate increased with each ring, and thenâŚvoicemail. Quickly, I punched the end button before dropping my phone in my lap. I plopped my rosary on top of it, and used both hands to rub my temples.Â
What was my next move?Â
Coffee.Â
Coffee was the next move. Then maybe I would have the gumption, and the gusto, to try Cecilia againâor call Royal.Â
This hospital was too small and too archaic for those fancy coffee vending machines. So I headed to the nurses station where the charge nurse pointed me in the direction of the cafeteria.
Nearing 10 p.m., the cafeteria was sparsely populated. A doctor here and there trying to conceal themselves, hoping for 15 minutes alone. A few workers were in the serving area, refreshing the limited offerings. A smile pulled my lips as I spotted the coffee.
While I paid for my drink, I heard the rain. Not just a light drizzle but a steady drumming of water. I stepped into the dining area and noticed the far end was a solarium. The rain streaked down the glass, distorting the view. Soothed by the sound, I walked over.
Sipping my coffee, I stared into the distance. I bet on a sunny day, it was a beautiful garden. Patients milling around with their visitors or their therapists coaching them through their post-op movement quota.
Maybe Rhett would be out there soon. Wobbling around with a cane or a walker under the watchful eye of a nurse or PT. Cussing under his breath because he âdoesnât need any helpâ but too polite to say anything aloud. I chuckled to myself as I turned to head back to the waiting room. The coffee was helping, but I still didnât want to talk to Rhettâs family.
Somehow Cecilia was the least threatening Abbott. Hilarious, considering the first time I came to meet the Abbotts and have dinner Cecilia wouldnât let me into the house. She and Rhett had a standoffâwhisper bickering on the front porch and all. It was only when her granddaughter Amy grabbed my hand that she, begrudgingly, let me in.
The Abbotts didnât strike me as overly religious. There were the usual hints here and thereâa crucifix on the wall in the dining room, a bible in the end table drawer beside the couch.Â
Cecilia proved to be the most faithful Abbott. She clearly believed in good and evil. Heaven and Hell. And to her, I was the devil. Brought into the Abbottsâ lives to test Rhettâlead him astray.Â
If I were to succeed, Rhett might move off the ranch. Maybe leave Wabang, entirely. Desert the family. Lord knows if he could stay healthy, heâd be one hell of a bull rider.Â
No matter what Cecilia thought of me, I needed to get a hold of her. Looking around the empty hallway, I stopped and pulled out my phone to try the house again. Still no answer. That woman really needed to get with the times and carry a cell phone.
Royal and I didnât see eye-to-eye much, but Rhett was his son. I tapped his name and put the phone to my ear. I did my best to remain calm when he answered. Not wanting to waste anyoneâs time, I first made sure he hadnât already been contacted by the event staff or hospital.
Of course, Royal made a point to remind me Maria was listed as Rhettâs emergency contact and ask where she was in all this. I never knew how Maria managed to fly under the radar with the Abbotts. After all, we wanted the same things for Rhett. We both knew he could be doing so much more than mending fences and getting into bar fights.
Hell, the thought even crossed my mind to call Maria, but I couldnât stomach her being here at the same time as the rest of the Abbotts and them doting on her. Plus, Rhett got quite warm under the collar when his family pitted us against one another.
Still unsure who would appear at the hospital, I was just glad that some of the Abbotts were en route. Feeling a little more at ease, I sipped my coffee as I pocketed my phone and wandered back to the waiting room.
My butt hadnât even hit the cushion when someone was calling Rhettâs name. Immediately, I stood back up and made eye contact with whom I presumed to be the surgeon. âIâm here for Rhett Abbott!â I nearly tripped as I scrambled to the doctor.Â
âNext of kin?âÂ
âFiancĂŠe.â The lie rolled off my tongue so naturally. I backed it by giving my full name.
My heart felt like it was in my throat as I stared at the surgeon, waiting for him to continue. âThat bull really did a number.â I shifted my weight from one foot to the other and crossed my arms.Â
I did my best to listen as the surgeon explained. They were following concussion protocol since Rhett bashed heads with the bull and packed dirt. And getting gored how Rhett did was a freak accidentâcompetition bull horns were always filed blunt.Â
Overall, the damage to his internal organs appeared minimal. The bruising pain would take longer to subside than for the abrasions to heal. The only hiccup was Rhett still losing blood, so a vascular surgeon scrubbed in to assess him.Â
Willing myself to be more hopeful than disappointed as the trauma surgeon disappeared, I sighed and shuffled back to my seat.Â
It felt like an eternity as I finished my coffee and then stared into the bottom of the cup. Still no sign of the Abbotts, I decided to occupy myself by trekking back to the cafeteria.Â
The rain was still pounding as I, again, took time to fantasize out the window. As I turned to leave, I nearly bumped into an older man. We exchanged pleasantries as he profusely apologized.Â
âCoffee wouldnât be the worst thing I wore today.â I tried to lighten the mood.
He eyed my scrub top and chuckled as he knelt on the floor for a second. âDoes this belong to you?â He opened his palm to reveal my rosary. I shook my head as he deposited it into my hand.Â
âHow many Hail Marys to forgive dropping it on the floor.âÂ
âWell, thatâs not my rodeo. I usually phone a friend.â I laughed softly at his response and thumbed the beads. âThereâs a chapel on your way out if you want a few minutes to yourself. Or, if you want company, Iâm happy to join you.â He paused. âI can also phone that friend.â
âThank you.â I gave him a genuine smile. âI think Iâll spend some time one-on-one.â He nodded as we parted ways.Â
The chaplain wasnât kidding when he said the chapel was hidden. The door was the same color as the sterile hospital wall. The only giveaway was the stained glass window, which read as a painting if you werenât paying attention.Â
It was quaint. The front of the room was the focal point with a trio of stained glass panels. Raindrops ricocheted off the panes. I slid into the middle pew of the five rows. Still fiddling with my rosary, I stared at the windows.Â
Clutching my beads, I folded my hands in the back of the pew in front of me. Tears welled in my eyes as I thought about Rhett.
âReligion is more Maâs thing, but the Sundays she does get me to church, it doesnât seem to matter how you worship.â Oh, Rhett. The thought of his voice was comforting.Â
Suddenly a tear hit my wrist and I sucked in a breath. âPlease don't let me lose him.â I mumbled between sobs. My forehead rested on the backs of my thumbs as I let my tears freely fall.
Once I felt empty, I sat back on the bench and slid each bead between my index and middle finger as I said the corresponding prayer. It was amazing what you could remember when it was beaten into you. A smile curled my lips as I thought about the first time Rhett realized the scarring across my knuckles and wrists were from rulers.Â
A single tear rolled down my cheek as I thought about the tenderness he showed as he kissed each of my knuckles and then my wrists. He made his way up my arms as he pulled me into his lap. Eventually my lips were on his with my arms wrapped around his neck.
âFuck,â I said as tipped my head and rolled my eyes to keep the tears from continuing.
Just then, I heard the door. I turned to see Cecilia, of all people. It took all my might not to let loose a barking laugh.
I was more shocked when she slid into the pew beside me, leaving just a few inches of space between us. âSurprised itâs still standing? The altar isnât on fire?â I joked.
She eyed the beads in my hands. âIsnât that Rhettâs necklace?âÂ
âItâs mine.â I paused for a second. âAnd itâs not a necklace, itâs a rosary. And I lent them to Rhett to protect him when he rides,â I added. She turned her head to look directly at me. âBlessed at the Vatican.â Her eyebrow jutted up the faintest bit.Â
I leaned slightly over toward her. âItâs the fallen ones that need a savior most, isnât it?â I listened to the rain for a few seconds before continuing. âAnd we only talk to God when we need favors?â Rhett would hate that I was needling his mother but also be proud I was standing up for myself.
Cecilia broke eye contact as she thought about how to respond. Instead of words, she placed her hand over mine that was holding my rosary. I looked at her with a raised eyebrow. âSome of our prayers are the same.â She squeezed my hand as we bowed our heads. I followed her lead as we softly recited a prayer aloud.Â
We were through our first set of Hail Marys when Royal walked in. âThereâs news.â We jumped up, hand-in-hand. Royal noticed our physical attachment but he didnât say anything as he turned to lead us out.
Perry and Amy were standing in the waiting room with the surgeon I spoke to earlier. Royal had to support Cecilia as the surgeon delivered cautiously optimistic news. Instinctively, I squeezed the beads in my hand. âWhen can we see him?â I blurted out.
âHe hasnât woken up, but you can visit him one at a time.â Amy bounced on the balls of her feet. âYou can go accompanied by an adult,â the surgeon added, looking at her with a smile. He then turned to look at me. âFiancĂŠe first?â All the Abbotts exchanged looks but no one challenged the title.
âYes,âI said quickly and then herded the surgeon away.
A hand on the door knob, he looked at me. âAre you ready?â Silently, I nodded. Then he pushed the door open, allowing me through first.Â
The room was soft lit and the only sound was Rhettâs heart monitor. Slowly, I walked to the bed. He looked peaceful. Tired but peaceful.Â
Taken with Rhett, I didnât even realize the surgeon let himself out. Quietly, I walked to the bedside. Rhett didnât move, except for the rise and fall of his chest. His breaths were deep and even.Â
They did their best to clean up his face. When he collided with the bull, it was face first so he ended up with a broken nose. The bruising was already apparent under his eyes. The stitches at his hairline were hardly noticeable.Â
After a few minutes, I softly sat on the edge of his bed and gently tucked a curl behind his ear. His eye twitched and my hand stilled. He didnât respond further, so I slipped my hand into his and rubbed the back with my thumb.
I sighed, continuing to watch his face. Selfishly, I wanted to stay here all night with him. However, at the very least, his mother and Amy needed to see him.Â
With one last squeeze, I gently got off the bed and headed for the door. I looked back one more time before leaving.
After everyone had a chance to see Rhett, Royal and Perry decided to drive over and get Rhettâs truck from the arena.Â
Amy and I stayed in the waiting room while Cecilia sat with her son. Amy was in good spirits, although Rhett had yet to wake up. She succumbed to curiosity and asked a million questions about Rhett. I did my best to answer every one.Â
Finally, Perry and Royal returned. Trailing behind them was Maria. I stood as Amy ran over to greet her father. âI figured you would turn up here,â I said coldly to Maria as she stood directly in front of me.Â
She shrugged. âWell, they called me directly, so I figured I should stop by and check in.â
âWhereâd you come from? The moon? How are you just arriving if you were the first call?â I asked. âDid you even bother to call the Abbotts?â
âOf course, I called Cecilia,â she explained. âBut she wasnât home, and Royal didnât pick up.â
âAnd Perry?â I pressed her.Â
She lowered her voice. âI donât call that piece of shit for anything.â She glared in his direction. âIsnât it kind of weird Rhett hasnât changed his emergency contact?â She looked back at me. âMaybe he wants to make sure itâs someone he can trust.â She smirked.
Before I could say anything, Perry approached us. He dropped Rhetâs truck keys in my hand. âAssuming youâre going to want to stay, being his fiancĂŠe and all.â I could feel the heat in my cheeks as he winked at me.
She tried not to appear obvious, but Mariaâs eyes widened slightly and her gaze dropped to my hand. I could see her relax when she realized I wasnât wearing a ring.
Just then, Royal, who had excused himself to say good night to Rhett and collect his wife, returned with Cecilia. âMaria!â Cecilia opened her arms to embrace her.Â
However, Cecilia was focused on me during the interaction. âYouâll update us as soon as you hear?â Royal held out Ceciliaâs coat, coaxing her to part with Maria.Â
âOf course.â I nodded.
âWeâll plan to come back tomorrow afternoon,â Royal stated.Â
âIâll swing by, too,â Maria added.
âOoh! We can come together!â Cecilia added.Â
âPerfect.â Maria smiled.
It took all my energy to not roll my eyes. My attention was diverted when Amy threw herself at me, wrapping her arms around my waist. I smiled and hugged her back, kissing the top of her head.Â
I waited for them to disappear through the doors, and then made my way to Rhettâs room. Light was beginning to peek through his blinds. He was still sound asleep. I tried my best to be quiet as I pushed the little cushioned sitting chair as close as possible to his bedside. Once seated, I sipped my coffee and told him about the night with his family.Â
Eventually, I moved onto reminiscing about some of our shared memories. Feeling a little stiff, I changed positions, folding my legs under me in the chair and leaning forward so my stacked arms rested on the edge of his bed. With my chin resting on top of them, I watched him.Â
Just being there gave me a sense of peace. The adrenaline was wearing off. My eyelids felt so heavy, which reminded me that I was coming up on 24 hours without sleep. It wouldnât hurt to rest my eyesâŚ
Rhett and I were laying in one of the pastures on the Abbott ranch. A beautiful day, the sun was warm on our faces. The back of Rhettâs fingers stroked my cheek, and I leaned into his touch. He kept saying my name as we looked at each other.
My eyes darted around behind my eyelids, and then shot open to see Rhett staring at meâhe really was stroking my cheek and saying my name. Basking in his touch, I leaned into his fingers. The tiniest smile pulled a corner of his mouth.Â
âRhett.â I sounded groggy. He rasped my name in response. Leaning into his fingers one more time, I pulled away to get him his water cup beside his bed.Â
After a few timid sips, he was damn near chugging. âWhoa, slow down. Itâs not going anywhere.â He smiled as I put his cup back on the bedside table and sat down. Rhett brushed his finger along mine. In response, I put my hand over his.
I could feel the tears building. âIâm so glad youâre ok.â I leaned down and kissed the back of his palm.Â
âMe, too.â He did his best to hold my hand. After a minute he said, âWhatâd I miss?â Clearly, his sarcasm hadnât been broken. I couldnât help but smile.
We enjoyed each otherâs company until a nurse came to check his vitals and realized he was awake. Then I stood beside his bed and held his hand while nurses and doctors poked and prodded and questioned him. Rhett remained calm throughout the entire processâmightâve been the morphine.
Once the doctor was satisfied, the nurses continued to work, so I stepped out to get another coffee and call Cecilia, as promised. Again hoping to reach her directly, I called the house line. She answered on the first ring. She was holding back tears as I updated her. It was the first time I heard sheer happiness in the womanâs voice.
I soaked in every minute I could alone with Rhett. I was torn between giving Rhett a heads up about Maria or letting him find out when she sashayed into his room. âRhett?â I was cross-legged in the chair, leaning against the side of his bed and holding his hand.Â
He looked at me, waiting for me to continue. âMaria is coming to see you.âÂ
âWhat?â Surprise was evident in his voice.
I took a deep breath before continuing. âSheâs still listed as your emergency contact, so she got a phone call to notify her you were injured,â I explained. âShe showed up last night well after visiting hours.â He scoffed. âAnd Cecilia invited her back today.âÂ
Rhett groaned and shifted a little. âI canât believe her.âÂ
My thumb soothed the back of his palm. âMaria is always trying to win you back.â
âIâm talking about my mother. She has to cut this shit out.â Rhettâs voice was tense, and I could feel it in his fingers.
âDonât worry about them, Rhett.â We locked eyes. âItâll be fine. I only mentioned it so that you werenât completely caught off guard.â
âThank you,â he said quietly. A smile pulled the one corner of my mouth as I placed my free hand over our clasped ones.
We sat in silence until Amy bound through the door. âUncle Rhett!â Both their faces lit up as she ran over. She hugged me after she came around the bed. Amy was small enough, I hoisted her onto Rhettâs bed to carefully hug him and then hold his hand.Â
She was chattering a mile a minute when Cecilia and Royal came in. After greeting them, I excused myself to get a coffee.
As luck would have it, Maria was arriving. âToo scared to be in a room with me?â she asked.Â
âMhmm, I donât like the smell of trash.â
She audibly laughed. âYour insults mean nothingâ We held eye contact. âThe Abbotts love me. And I know them like the back of hand. I can play âem like fiddles.â She scanned my face for a reactionâI remained stoic.Â
âCecilia thinks youâre the devil,â she continued. âTrying to lure her baby off the ranch.â
âAnd what exactly is it that she thinks youâre doing?â I retorted.
Maria smiled and shrugged. âI had my heyday. I wouldnât possibly want to move away now. Iâm ready to find a husband and settle down. I know thereâs no place like Wabang.â Sarcasm colored her tone.
I laughed. âThatâs for damn sure.âÂ
âGood luck overcoming that.â She huffed and bumped my shoulder as she passed.Â
Just as she was about to cross the threshold into Rhettâs room, Cecilia popped out the door. It felt like slow motion as they collided. The lid popped off Mariaâs coffee and scalding brown liquid dyed her baby pink blouse.Â
âOh my goodness! Iâm so sorry!â Cecilia cried. âLetâs get you cleaned up!â Cecilia took Maria by the elbow down the hall in the direction of the restrooms. Maria held the fabric away from skin as Cecilia muled her along.Â
A shake of my head, I continued to the cafeteria for my own beverage.
On my way back, I stopped in the almost hidden chapel. During my previous visit, Iâd noticed the bowl of holy water and wanted to splash some on my rosary to cleanse it before giving it back to Rhett. It was the best I could do without a priest.Â
When I returned to Rhettâs room, Cecilia was sitting at his bedside. They were whispering in harsh tones. They immediately stopped as I entered. âI can leave.â I pointed a thumb over my shoulder.Â
âNo, no!â A smidge of desperation in Rhettâs voice. âMa was just leaving.â Cecilia stood and leaned down to place a chaste kiss on Rhettâs forehead.
She looked at me as she left. Her expression felt softer somehow. I waited until she completely exited the room before venturing over to my usual seat. Rhett immediately extended his hand.Â
âI have something for you.â His interest was piqued. âHold out your hand.â He did as he was told and I dropped the beads into it.Â
âI was getting ready to ask the nurse about this.â He rubbed his thumb over the beads and closed his hand, bringing it to his heart.Â
âThe EMT saved them,â I added.Â
âI think they saved me.â Rhett looked at me.Â
âI think modern medicine saved you.â
âDonât go all evolution over creation on me, now,â he shot back. âYou gave these to me for a reason.â He was right. I rolled my eyes and moved to press my lips to his. âMhmm, you shut me up like that more often,â he said as we parted.Â
âBased on how hard youâre roasting me, it feels like youâll be discharged any minute.âÂ
Sure enough, by the end of the day, Rhett was being wheeled to the passenger door of his truck.
Once he was home, Cecilia became his caretaker. She and I did come to an understanding that included me pre-cooking meals for Rhett. I was skeptical when she extended the use of their kitchen to prepare them. However, I gladly accepted, and the very next night, we all sat down to a meal I cooked for everyone as a thank you.Â
âBefore we dig in, how about we say grace?â Cecilia looked at Royal, who nodded in agreement. Everyone folded their hands around the table and bowed their heads. Cecilia called my name, and I looked up to meet her gaze. âWould you do the honors, since you made this meal?â
Rhettâs hand settled on my thigh. I could feel his eyes on me. âOf course,â I agreed with a small smile, which Cecilia returned. We all bowed our heads as I said grace. Amy was the first to join me, then Rhett and the rest of the Abbotts.
âAmen.â We all said in unison.Â
âThank you.â Cecilia looked at me with a genuine smile.Â
âYouâre welcome,â I replied. Rhett squeezed my thigh as we exchanged looks.
Dinner felt like a dream. Or a trap. Although I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, I felt oddly comfortable. Standing beside Cecilia washing dishes while she dried them seemed natural. As if we had been doing this for years.
I was wiping down the empty sink when I saw a vehicle approaching the house. There it was: the trap springing closed. Silently, I took a deep breath to brace myself. I didnât say a word to Cecilia. Besides, she was likely expecting Maria.Â
Knocking rang through the house. Cecilia poked her head out of the kitchen as Amy shouted, âIâll get it!â and ran toward the door. Everyone seemed surprised by Mariaâs presence, but Royal politely invited her to stay and enjoy the dessert she brought.Â
âLet me slice it up!â I waited for Maria to catch sight of me. âOh, you are here.â The light left her face as she sat a pie on the table.
âDoing your best to suck up to Cece and Royal?â she added as she walked toward me. I didnât move as she got in my personal space and reached around me for a pie server. âExcuse my reach.â She withdrew, tool in hand, and walked back to the table.Â
âJust making sure Rhett gets fed during recovery.â I leaned against the sink with my arms crossed. We briefly made eye contact as she made the first incision. It was silent as she put monstrous portions on each plate.Â
âOh!â Maria feigned surprise as she looked at the empty tin. âI wasn't expecting you to be here.â She loaded pie plates on her arms and disappeared into the dining room.Â
Maria came back and grabbed the final plate. âIf there is any left, you can have my sloppy seconds.â She winked and turned to head into the dining room.Â
As she spun around, there was Cecilia. Before she knew what hit her, she was covered in pie. âMy goodness, Maria!â Cecilia looked her up and down, and then motioned for me to pass a kitchen towel. In no rush, I tossed one in their direction.
Cecilia fussed over Maria and tried to clean her up but really just smeared it more into her shirt. âWell, looks like you have to settle for crumbs!â Cecilia added as she dropped some pie bits into the waste bin.Â
Mariaâs eyes narrowed as she looked between us. âI said I wasnât going to stay long, and this feels like a sign that I really should get going.â
âIâm sure weâll see you next time weâre at the bank!â Cecilia ushered her out. While she was herding Maria to the door, I found the broom and finished cleaning.
Cecilia came back as I was emptying the dust pan. When I turned around there were two plates of pie on the table. âShe practically served that pie in quarters.âÂ
âThank you,â I said as I came toward the table.Â
âFinding the snakes in the garden can be tough,â she responded and handed me a plate. âYou can call me Cece.âÂ
âOk, Cece.â I tested it out as we made our way to the dining room. Rhett pulled my chair close to his as I sat down. Cecilia watched us as she folded her napkin on her lap.Â
She cast an unnoticed glance at my hand as we ateâa reminder to make sure he knew where she kept his maternal grandmotherâs wedding band so he could get it resized when he was ready.
Royal ran his finger along Ceceâs, pulling her back to the present moment. Her mind ran from wedding rings to homesteads. Then she had a moment where she thought about having two daughters-in-law. âPlease donât let me lose her,â she whispered under her breath.Â
With that favor, she returned her attention to those around the table.

Made up fic title: "Who We Once Were"
Rhett's rusted out truck roared on the dirt road, kicking up a trail of dust in the rearview. Pedal to the floor, country music blaring through the shitty speakers. The windows are down, and you lean out the window, howling to the brilliant blue sky. You can feel Rhett's fingers in your belt loops, gripping tight in case you fall, but right now, Wabang is nothing but a speck growing smaller by the second. A flutter of small bills spirals out of one of the bags in the bed of the truck and you laugh wildly. No one would ever suspect the quiet second son of Royal Abbott and the only child of the mayor to run away together-- let alone rob a bank on their way out of town. But that was then, and now the world was open to you. Wabang didn't matter. Not anymore.

moonstruck ⢠rhett abbott x fem!reader, perry abbott x fem!reader
I wrote this for @sorchatheredâs birthday rom com celebration! Happy Belated Birthday! Thank you for letting me combine two of my favorite things: Lew and âMoonstruckâ. I know it was your celebration but that was a gift to me đ
Warnings: alcohol consumption, implied smut, impure thoughts about rhett abbott, being engaged to perry abbott (if youâve seen the movie, youâll get it)
Note: I adore this movie with all my heart so I tried to fill this with lots of nods to the iconic moments. But it also means that characters might be a bit less true to their Outer Range selves in order to make the story work.
Maybe it should have been a red flag that you hadnât met Perryâs brother until after you were engaged.
But then again, the whole thing had been a bit of a whirlwind â and you had met Amy. Sweet, smart, beautiful Amy who had been the main reason you said âyesâ when Perry had surprised you with a ring at dinner just a few months into your relationship.
âI canât imagine anyone whoâd be a better stepmother to Amy,â heâd said at the time and how was anyone supposed to say no to that?
And if you were a bit hesitant about the whole thing, your mother had done her best to reassure you over steaming mugs of tea at her weathered kitchen table. âYou love his daughter, and thatâs the important part,â she had said, rubbing her thumb gently over the back of your hand. âItâs better to be devoted to your family, rather than any man. Especially a cowboy.â
You sighed. âHeâs not that kind of cowboy, Mama. He works with his dad on the family ranch.â
âGood,â she responded decisively, standing up to make some more tea. âCowboys are nothing but heartbreak. Theyâll always love the rodeo, the animals, the adventure, the life more than theyâll love you.â
And so that was that. You focused your energy on building a relationship with Amy, got to know Royal and Cecelia and went through the motions of starting to plan a simple, courthouse wedding.
Perry didnât have strong feelings about the big day, having done the whole song and dance once before, but two weeks into planning, he surprised you with the announcement that he had to go away for a while on business â and he had one big favor to ask.Â
âItâs been tearing me up inside,â he said, arm a little too tight around your waist as you sat on the couch, TV on mute in the background. âI just canât get married without my brother standing up with me.â
âSo why not just invite him?â
Perry scoffed. âRhett is ⌠real fucking stubborn. And he decided a long time ago that he didnât care about anything I had to say.â He paused, tightening his rip just a fraction before letting you go and dramatically sighing, leaning back into the couch cushions. âBut maybe if you were to ask him to come ⌠explain that you want this to mark a fresh new start for all of us, as a family. As Amyâs family. Maybe heâd be willing to listen.â
It was the promise of being Amyâs family, of giving her the happy ending that had seemingly been ripped away from her when her mother disappeared that brought you to the Abbott ranch, eyes squinting against the harsh sunlight as you approached Rhett Abbott to ask for forgiveness on behalf of his brother.
Now this is a cowboy, you thought to yourself as you watched his broad shoulders flex under his tee shirt as he worked on repairing a broken section of fencing. The back of his neck was turning pink and the ends of his hair curled with sweat under his cap, but he seemed unbothered as he continued working, big hands moving quickly and competently.
âRhett? Rhett Abbott?â you asked, and when he wheeled around and those blue eyes landed on yours, it felt like your heart stopped for a second.
âCan I help ya?â he drawled, pulling his baseball cap off his head and wiping the sweat off his forehead with the back of his muscled forearm. He was all golden skin and sharp cheekbones, cheeks flushed pike from the heat and exertion and a smirk that was designed to give women the naughtiest of thoughts.
Stop it. Youâre engaged. To his brother. Behave yourself.
You must have taken longer than you realized to reply, because that smirk turned into a grin as Rhett leaned forward and offered out his hand. âNice to meet you. Now, what can I do for a beautiful woman such as yourself?â
Your face felt like it was on fire as you shook his hand, warm and calloused and completely dwarfing yours. When he didnât seem to recognize your name after you introduced yourself, you continued, âIâm uh ⌠Perryâs ⌠fiancĂŠe, I guess.â
âYouâre engaged to Perry?â he asked, arms crossing in front of his chest and you werenât sure if he was insulting you with his tone of shock.
âYeah, I mean, itâs pretty recent. The whole thingâs been kind of ⌠fast. But weâre planning the wedding and he wants you to stand there with him, be his best man ââ
âAnd why isnât he out here askinâ me this?â Rhett interrupted sharply, eyes stormy under the brim of his cap.
âHe, um, heâs out of town right now ⌠and anyway he said âŚâ you paused, somehow sensing that the truth â he said youâd be more likely to say âyesâ if I asked â wouldnât go over well. âAnd well, I wanted to meet you and everything. Get to know the whole family before I become a part of it.â
âWell, weâve met now. Congratulations on the wedding.â
With that, he turned his back on you, returning to the fence and summarily dismissing you. Once again, you werenât sure if you should be offended by his actions, but clearly you had accidentally stumbled into some kind of family tension that Perry had not warned you about.Â
âSo thatâs it?â You asked, taking a step closer to him. Rhett grunted as he continued working on the fence. âWhat, youâre just going to brush off your brotherâs request? Shouldnât a wedding bring family together and not tear them apart?âÂ
âYou donât know anythinâ about me and Perry,â the cowboy said, his voice cold and his eyes not even looking up for a second.
âSo tell me,â you pleaded, making your way closer to him and oh, that might have been a mistake. You could smell him at this distance, the faintest hint of his woodsy body wash, the scent of sun on skin, the tang of sweat.
It almost made you salivate with want â your body had never reacted this way to a man before, and you quickly stepped back and put some space between you two. A safe, platonic distance. âIs ⌠is there something I should know before I marry him? Donât you think itâs only right that I know the man Iâm marrying?â
Finally, Rhett huffed out a sigh and turned around and you were struck again by how blue his eyes were underneath that hint of annoyance.
âLook, you really should be askinâ Perry all this, not me,â he bit out. âIâm not staying here much longer anyway, so you donât even need to get to know me. Youâll only ever see me at holidays and shit like that.â
âWhere are you going?â
âRodeo circuit,â Rhett responded, a hint of pride in his voice. âGot a spot on a semi-pro tour, so Iâll be on the road soon enough.âÂ
You congratulated him faintly, images of this gruff, gorgeous man on the back of a bull filling your brain and making you a bit weak in the knees.
âYeah, so itâs all good. Iâll be outta your way soon enough and you and Perry can have your wedding with no issues,â Rhett concluded.
He started to turn back to his work and you felt a surge of panic run through you, like if you didnât manage to convince him to stick around right this second, youâd never have the chance again. (And you could unpack why, exactly, it was so vital for you to have your fiancĂŠâs brother around as much as possible later, in the shaming quiet of your bedroom.)
âWell, how about this then,â you start, enjoying the way Rhettâs brows lifted under the brim of his cap, his eyes dancing with a mix of amusement and exasperation. âSpend some time with me and Amy before you go â just to help me get to know her better. I want to build a strong relationship with her, sheâs my number one priority in all this. And I know she adores her Uncle Rhett. So maybe you can just ⌠help us bond?â
The cowboy hesitated a moment, his eyes roaming all over your face in a way that made your cheeks heat up. He must have found what he was searching for because he ultimately pulled off his work glove once more and held out a big, calloused hand.
âFor Amy,â he said and you felt your face split open with a bright grin.
âFor Amy,â you agreed, grasping his hand. And yet, despite the warmth of his hand engulfing yours, despite the fact that you managed to convince him to give you a chance, despite the fact that you should have been pleased with yourself, you felt a sinking feeling in your stomach.
Oh, Iâm in trouble.
That sinking feeling only got worse the more time you spent with Rhett, the more you got to feel the full weight of his attention on you, the more you saw the way he lit up around Amy, always willing to go out of his way to make her happy.
Unfortunately for you, what would make her happy right now was to go for a ride with Uncle Rhett and you â a Wyoming native who had, shockingly, never been on the back of a horse before.
âHow did you grow up here without ever ridinâ a horse?â Rhett asked you incredulously when you confessed your lack of experience after Amy dragged you to meet him in the stables, all wide, pleading eyes. âIt makes no sense.â
You shrug uncomfortably, staring at the horses relaxing in the stables with a critical eye. âMy dad was a cowboy but he died when I was little. My mama grew up Cheyenne, so we moved back there for a long time and only came to Wabang when my granddaddy left her the bakery. So I just ⌠never learned.â
You wrapped your arms around your torso as you spoke, curling in on yourself in embarrassment, eyes self-consciously locked on the far wall so you could avoid seeing the judgement on Rhettâs face. It was why you startled slightly when you felt Amyâs little arms hug you out of nowhere, the feeling of her tight squeeze making you let out a deep breath of relief.
âDonât worry! Uncle Rhett can teach you, he and dad taught me and heâs really good!â she assured you and you laughed softly.
âThanks, Ames,â you said, softly brushing some of the hair that escaped her braid back from her face. You cast a tentative look up at Rhett, who was smiling softly at you. âWhaddya say, Uncle Rhett? Willing to take on a new student?â
The cowboy said nothing, though his eyes were bright with amusement as he made his way over to one of the stalls to start getting one of the horses ready for you, Amy bounding behind him.
You couldnât stop smiling as the 9-year-old narrated everything her uncle was doing, beaming brightly when he praised her for remembering certain tidbits that he had shared with her over the years. Her enthusiasm went a long way towards making you more comfortable, as did the teasing words and glances that Rhett shot your way the whole time.
But that smile was wiped right off your face, when he held out his hand and beckoned you over. âCâmere, Iâll help you get into the saddle,â he said softly and you felt all of your blood rush into your face.
âArenât there like, stairs or something I could use?â You asked, knowing that the second you put your hand in his, all of the tempting thoughts about him that youâd successfully shoved down would come rushing back into your head. His blue eyes shone as he shook his head, explaining that they put it away somewhere and it would take too long to find right now.
âI wonât let ya fall,â he said, those beautiful eyes locked on yours. âPromise.â
As Amy urged you along from the back of her own horse, you tentatively reached forward and took Rhettâs big hand in yours. It was like you could hear your heart beating in your ears as he tugged you over and instructed you to put one foot in the stirrups and your free hand on the saddle horn.
âI can give you a boost if ya need,â he added, his voice low and grumbly and far, far too close. You must have nodded absently, because the next thing you knew, Rhett placed your second hand on the saddle horn and moved around to lightly grasp your waist.
Your skin burned where you felt those hands on you and even though he kept them in a perfectly respectable place â perfectly polite for someone who was engaged to his brother â you couldnât help but imagine the heat of them in other, less savory places on your body. The way those calloused palms would feel brushing over your lower back, how his hands would span the entire distance of your neck, how those long fingers would feel filling up your â
âReady?â he asked, hot breath against the back of your neck.
âI think so,â you responded weakly, and you felt him chuckle. He murmured a low countdown and at the number âthreeâ you hoisted yourself up and swung one leg over to the other side of the saddle, feeling a little lightheaded at his little grunt of effort as he helped lift you up off the ground.
Once you were in and settled, you expected him to back away, but instead, Rhett leaned over your lap to gather up the reins and hand them to you.
âThere ya go. Youâre a natural,â he said, voice still gritty enough to feel like a gut-punch when it was paired with the heat of his gaze on your face. He was so close and so beautiful and you could catch the faintest whiff of that intoxicating, woodsy scent if you just leaned a little closer â
âLetâs goooooo,â Amy called, wiggling a little impatiently in her saddle and effectively startling your out of our fantasies.
Youâve gotta stop this. Youâre engaged, for chrissakes.
âWeâre cominâ, weâre cominâ,â Rhett grumbled, heading over to his own horse and swinging into the saddle with grace. âYou gonna be late for some cartoons or somethinâ?â
The pair set out, with you slightly behind them, head still swimming with shameful thoughts of your fiancĂŠâs brother and face still burning. It took a while for you to let the pairâs teasing distract you from the feeling of guilt that had made a home in your stomach since the day you met Rhett, but eventually you were able to let go and enjoy your time on the trail.
And if you stared at the ceiling later that night, mind replaying the way Rhettâs eyes darkened and his lips turned up into a little smirk when he helped you down off the horse at the end of your outing, well, nobody needed to know about that.
The air at the rodeo was electric, the excitement infectious and the smell of fried food making everyone salivate as they made their way to the stands. You hadnât been to the rodeo since high school, more interested in chatting with your friends or trying to spot your crush than in the actual events, but this night was making you regret all of those years you ignored its presence.
It helped that Amy was practically vibrating with excitement, tugging you around by the hand as she babbled on and on about her favorite food stalls and rattling off stats about the various bull riders. Of course, none of them compared to Uncle Rhett in her mind, but her knowledge of the sport was truly impressive.
ââ but the bull they gave Uncle Rhett that time was a bad one, everyone knew it, and anyway he got another shot and that time he came in first place because heâs the best ââ
âAmy, Amy, slow down,â you chuckled, head spinning as you tried to both keep up with the conversation and keep her from crashing into anyone at the same time.
âCome on, we have to get popcorn before the bull riding starts, Iâm always in the stand for Uncle Rhett,â she powered on, not even pausing for a second as she continued on her mission, a crisp five dollar bill in her hand, courtesy of Cecilia. âThere! Come on, come on!â
You could feel the heels of your shoes practically skid in the dirt as she took off towards the line and you had to stop short when she finally, abruptly stopped walking to join in. You took a deep breath, relieved to be able to pause for a second and take in the atmosphere, when you hear her shriek beside you.
Your heart stopped for a second as you wheeled around to spot her, only for it to skip a beat for a completely different reason when you realized that Rhett had snuck up behind her.
His grin was blinding as he picked her up and swung her around in a tight circle, her delighted squeals flying through the air. It only got wider and more brilliant when she began playfully hitting his chest after her put her down, and he pretended that her blows were about to knock him down.
âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry, I couldnât resist,â he got out between laughs, and you couldnât stop your own smile from breaking out across your face.
âI almost had a heart attack when she screamed like that,â you admitted and his cobalt eyes moved from Amy to meet yours.
âMy apologies, maâam,â he said with an exaggerated drawl, playfully tipping his cowboy hat at you in mock apology. You had to fight the urge to duck your head as you felt your face heat up at his actions.
What was this effect that he had on you? You had never been the type to giggle and blush at any guy before Rhett, but there was something about him that just made you feel like a teenager with her first crush all over again.
âApology accepted, cowboy,â you managed to get out and his eyes danced with mischief. âShouldnât you be getting ready for your big ride?â
âI was, I just had to come say hi to my favorite lady,â Rhett said, giving a gentle tug to the end of Amyâs ponytail. She looked up at him with a giant smile, clearly pleased to hear that she was her uncleâs âfavorite,â and your heart melted at the sight. He gently pushed her along when it was her turn to order popcorn, and you stepped out of the line as she made her way up.
âSo, youâre sticking around for my ride?â he asked.
âOf course,â you responded, a little surprised that he thought you werenât here to watch him alongside his family. âWouldnât miss it. I havenât even been to the rodeo in years, itâs really exciting to know one of the competitors.â
âWell, hopefully I manage to make your return to the rodeo an exciting one,â he said, hands settling on his waist, right next to his big, silver belt buckle.
You were grateful that Amy bounded back over to the two of you then, effectively preventing you from all of the dirty thoughts that you were about to have about what might rest behind that gaudy buckle. Rhett gave his niece another hug â and sent a wink your way that you were definitely not going to spend the night thinking about â before you went your separate ways.
By the time you made it back to the Abbotts in the stands, you were just as excited for Rhettâs ride as Amy was.
Your heart was in your throat for the entirety of the bull riding competition, because of course, Wabangâs hometown hero had to go last. When it was finally his turn, Amy gripped your arm tightly as you both watched, unblinking, for them to open the gate and begin his ride. You werenât sure you took a single breath for the entirety of his time, those 8 seconds feeling like an eternity as you watched Rhett hold onto that bull for dear life.
When the buzzer finally sounded and he was back on his feet, it was like all of the blood in your body came rushing back into your veins, heartbeat thumping in your ears.
And then, there it was, right at the top of the leaderboard: R. Abbott.
Amyâs excited cheer was more like a shriek as the four of you jumped up and down in the stands, popcorn trampled below your feet as you celebrated with his family. With your new family.
And if you wanted to believe that Rhett was looking at you, in particular, as he pounded his chest with pride, well, you allowed yourself that one, tiny indulgence.
You were still breathless as you made your way out of the stands a little while later, following Royal, Cecelia and Amy as they made their way to find and congratulate Rhett in person. The four of you were almost at the ridersâ entrance when you heard someone call your name from the crowd.
âEvening,â Royal said, tipping his hat at Joy Hawk after she managed to get everyoneâs attention.
âHi there Royal, Cecelia,â she said, nodding at them both in turn before turning to Amy. âHi Amy. Howâre you doing, sweetie?â
The 9-year-old excitedly told her all about Rhettâs ride as she smiled and agreed that it had been âone heck of a ride.â After a minute, she turned to you and said you name again. âCould I speak to you for just a moment? One-on-one?â
âO-okay,â you agreed, confused as to what she could possibly want.
After giving you a look that you translated to âweâre here if you need us,â Cecelia explained that they would go and wait for Rhett while you chatted with the deputy sheriff. âIâm sure youâll just be a moment,â she added, before taking Amy by the hand and leading her away with one last look.
âIs ⌠is everything okay?â you asked tentatively as Joy sighed deeply.
âI would have preferred not to be the one to tell you this, but, well, I canât seem to get ahold of Perry ââ
âHeâs out of town,â you said quickly. âIs he okay?â
âFar as I know he is,â she reassured you before taking another deep breath. âI saw you two had filed for a marriage license and well, the thing is, heâs still married. To Rebecca.â
âBut she ⌠left. Sheâs not part of their lives anymore. Not part of Amyâs life,â you said, not quite following what she was telling you.
âRight, right. Sheâs a missing person. But see, the thing is, as long as sheâs a missing person â and we donât know that she died, god forbid â Perry is still legally married to her. Their marriage is still valid until either they manage to file for divorce or sheâs declared ⌠dead.â
âOh.â
The news hit you like a ton of bricks. What did this mean for you? For your relationship? You had been planning a wedding and this whole time, Perry was still married? So what was the point of all of it?
âNow, you two can still have a wedding, Iâm not gonna stop you from that,â Joy continued, her tone soft and comforting. âYâall just wonât be legally married until this all gets sorted out.â
âAnd ⌠how long would that take?â
Joy sighed heavily, her hands coming to rest on her hips. âI donât know. Depends on whether or not Rebecca ⌠comes back.â
You nodded absently, feeling your whole world tilt on its axis. You hadnât even considered the possibility that Rebecca would be found or return of her own volition. If that happened would you just be pushed out of the family again? Would you still be able to see Amy?
Did that mean that the best case scenario for you was that this precious little girlâs mother was dead? How could you hope for something like that?
âIâm real sorry to break the news to you like this. Like I said, Iâve been trying to get ahold of Perry, but he and I can go over everything when he gets back,â the deputy sheriff said, patting you kindly on the arm.
You murmured your thanks before spinning around and making your way over to the Abbotts, head still swimming with questions.
By the time you made it there, they were chatting with a grinning Rhett, who was carrying Amy on his back. His smile faltered when he saw you and the dazed look on your face and you did your best to paste on a smile of your own. It must not have been totally convincing, though, because he let his niece slide down off his back as Royal and Cecelia exchanged looks.
âYou look like you could use a drink,â Rhett said, his blunt words making you huff out a laugh. âIâm going to celebrate at the Handsome Gambler â come with me.â
The last thing you needed to do was be alone with Rhett Abbott, especially if alcohol was involved. But the world had just thrown a huge wrench in your plans, so you werenât even thinking about it being a bad idea when you agreed.
âYou ready to tell me whatâs got you so spooked?â Rhett asked, leaning across the table so you could hear him over the music. You were both a few beers in â though Rhett had also enjoyed a handful of celebratory tequila shots that some of the locals had bought for him â and his cheeks were flushed pink from laughter and booze.
You contemplated telling him for a second, letting all of your frustrations and anxieties spill out (it turns out that Perry is still legally married so this whole engagement is more of a farce than it seems and if she comes back sheâs probably not going to let me see Amy which is the main reason I said yes in the first place) before you remembered that he and Perry still had a complicated relationship.
As torn up as you were, you didnât want to do anything to damage that bond even more.
âItâs nothing,â you said, shaking your head and taking a swig of your beer as if you swallow your words back down. âAnyway, weâre not done talking about that amazing ride of yours, cowboy.â
You attempt at distraction clearly didnât work; Rhett just leaned further across the table, those damn blue eyes roaming all over your face.
âSomethinâs clearly up. Is it Perryâs fault?â
âWhy do you assume itâs something Perry did?â you fire back, less out of a need to protect your fiancĂŠâs feelings than to try and get Rhett off the track.
âPerryâs always doing something,â he replied, shaking his head. He stared hard at you for a moment longer, setting off a wave of butterflies in your gut, before grinning and sitting back down in the booth. âOkay, clearly we need another beer and then youâll talk.â
âRhett ââ you began, but you cut yourself off with a laugh as you watched him make a goofy, exaggerated motion to the barâs sole waitress. âYou think you can just get me drunk and Iâll spill all my secrets?â
âOh, so you have secrets, do you?â He asked, raising one eyebrow in mocking curiosity. âTell me a secret.â
âNo,â you responded, but you were laughing still. âYou donât get to demand a secret.â
âWhat if Iâm just so charming you canât help but tell me?â You snorted and took a sip of your beer to cover up the fact that you did, in fact, find him charming. âHere, Iâll make you a deal: Iâll tell you a secret if you tell me one. Something youâve never told anyone else,â he said, smiling slyly at you.
I like you so much. I canât stop thinking about you. It makes me feel so guilty.
The words came to your brain before you could stop them. You definitely werenât going to say them out loud â you werenât sure you had even admitted them to yourself before this moment. But you knew, deep in your gut, that they were true.
That realization was almost more shocking than learning that your fiancĂŠ was still legally married.
âI gotta ââ you began, jumping up from the table and almost bumping into the waitress as she dropped off two new beers. âBathroom. Iâll be right back.â
You rushed off before Rhett could stop you, weaving your way through the crowd at the bar and a few dancing couples before you found the blissfully empty bathroom. After locking the door behind you, you landed against the sink, taking a few deep, steadying breaths as the bass from the music echoed through the wall. You stared at yourself in the mirror, a long, hard look.
I like him.
I like Rhett.
I have feelings for him.
Heâs my fiancĂŠâs brother.
Iâm crazy about him.
You shook your head, as if you cast those thoughts out of your brain. âSnap out of it,â you muttered to yourself. âYou gotta snap out of it.â
Frantically, you turned on the water, yanking the faucet all the way to cold and ran your wrists under the stream of freezing water in an attempt to shock your system. You let out a long, slow exhale, allowing the cold to bring you back to yourself.
Youâd just go back to the table, tell Rhett that you were tired and go home. Perry would be home in a couple of days and you could put the whole thing out of your mind and just focus on him and Amy. And then Rhett would be on the road soon.
Ignoring the small pang of of sadness that passed through you at the thought, you turned off the faucet and dried off your hands. Taking a moment to swipe away any mascara that had smudged under your eyes, you braced yourself and exited the bathroom determined to stay as far away from Rhett as possible.
So naturally, you barreled right into him as you turned the corner to make your way back to the table.
âHey, hey, sorry about that,â he said, big, rough hands holding you steady. âI didnât mean to walk right into ya, I was just coming to see if you were okay. You took off kinda quick.â
Did he know his thumbs were gently rubbing against the bare skin of your forearms? Because you did. It was all you could think about.
âI- Iâm fine. Thank you,â you said, and even though you knew you should pull away from him, you made no move to do so. âJust needed some quiet for a second.â
âAlright, as long as youâre okay,â he said, giving your arms a brief squeeze before letting go. You immediately missed the warmth of his hands on your skin. âYou thinkinâ ya wanna head out?â
You nodded absently and he smiled before turning around to lead you out the door. Just as you started to take a few steps, though, the song changed, an old Linda Ronstadt song that your mother used to sing along to as you both cleaned the house on a Sunday morning.
âOh, I love this song,â you said, not realizing it was loud enough for Rhett to hear until he turned around with a smile.
âYeah? I think my mama used to play this one in the truck sometimes,â he said, before taking a step back and holding a hand out toward you. âDance with me? Just for this one song and then we can go. Seems a shame not to since you love it so much.â
You couldnât resist. His eyes were shining too brightly, his smile revealing small little dimples that you had never noticed before, Lindaâs voice calling for you to spin away on the dance floor. You took Rhettâs outstretched hand and his smile widened, brilliant and completely intoxicating.
The pair of you kept a respectful distance even as he spun you around, though he kept your hand in his the whole time. He laughed as you sang along to the song and then the next one and the next.
You lost track of how long the two of you had been dancing until he tugged you a little closer when a ballad came on, Hank Williams crooning low and slow as you breathlessly wrapped one arm around his shoulders.
Your actions seemed to embolden Rhett, who dropped a hand to your waist and pulled you in even more.
You could see every freckle on his face, every shade of blue in his eyes, how the pupils dilated as the two of you swayed together, lost in the moment. You licked you lips unconsciously and you watched his gaze dart down to your mouth before he purposefully looked back up, into your eyes.
âI like having you âround, you know?â he murmured and your heart began pounding erratically. âYou make things brighter. And I like seeinâ Amy so happy.â
âI like being around you, too. All of you,â you said, feeling a little dizzy as his words echoed around your brain. âFeels like I ⌠fit. Iâm not used to that feeling.â
Rhett smiled at that, so you continued. âAnd I donât think Iâve laughed this much in a long time. With Amy, with you âŚâ
âHappy to be of service,â he chucked. âYou have a great smile. Real pretty."
Your face felt so warm, it had to be obvious to everyone in this bar just how much this cowboy was making you melt. âYouâre not too bad yourself, Rhett Abbott.â
He dropped your hand for a second to tilt his cowboy hat up so you could see his face more clearly, before sliding it back around you, warm and possessive against your lower back.
âItâs a real shame Perry met you before I did,â he murmured. âKinda wish it was the other way âround.â
Oh.
Oh, no. That was the wrong thing for him to say to you. This was only going to make your little crush on him worse. Because sometimes you felt the exact same way.
Because sometimes as you drifted off to sleep, you imagined what would have happened if you did meet Rhett first, if you were engaged to him instead of his brother.
Your shock â and maybe guilt â must have shown on your face because Rhett quickly let go of you and stepped back.
âSorry. Iâm sorry. Shouldnât have said that,â he said quickly. âIâve been drinking â letâs just blame it on the tequila, okay? I say dumb shit when Iâm drunk.â
âItâs fine, itâs okay,â you reassured him. âWeâve both been drinking. Itâs fine.â
âLemme â we can just head home, okay? Weâll just get out of here and forget about it,â he continued, already making his way back to the entrance.
But you werenât sure youâd ever be able to forget it, even if you wanted to. The low, soft way he spoke, the way his eyes were locked on your face, the shape his lips made as he said it. I wish it was the other way âround.
It was everything you wanted to hear. It was the absolute worst thing he could have said.
You kept your distance from the Abbott ranch in the days after the rodeo, buried in work, in cleaning your little apartment, in helping your mother around her house, at the bakery, anything to keep yourself from thinking about Rhettâs words.
By the time Perry was home from his trip, the guilt was eating you up inside.
You couldnât even bring yourself to be excited as you drove over to meet him and Amy for dinner, stomach churning with doubt and confusion and guilt. How could you sit down with this man â this man that you were engaged to for chrissakes â when you couldnât stop thinking about his brother? How could you pretend that you were a happy family when you wanted to play house with Rhett instead?
Your thoughts were swirling like the dust under your tires as you pulled up to the Abbott ranch to see Perry sitting on the porch. He smiled an waved as you parked the car and pulled you into a hug as you stepped up to meet him.
âHow was your trip?â You asked, swallowing around the lump in your throat.
âIt was ⌠good. Yeah, it was good. I needed it,â he said.
âYour ⌠business trip?â
He shrugged a little sheepishly, before gesturing to the rocking chairs on the porch. âYeah. Yeah, lemme â letâs talk for a second.â
He knows. Rhett told him.
Fighting the urge to puke over the porch railing, you gingerly sat down next to Perry, who pulled your hand in his and absentmindedly rubbed his thumb along the back of it as it spoke. You didnât want to admit it, but it felt wrong when he did it, as opposed to the thrill that ran through you when Rhett touched you.
âIs everything okay, Perry?â you asked softly.
âYeah, yeah. Look, I should â I wasnât totally honest with you before I left. I didnât go on a business trip. I went to ⌠well, I went to try and find Rebecca one last time.â He grimaced slightly as you gasped softly. This was not what you expected when he asked you to talk. âI couldnât stop thinking of this one place we used to go before Amy was born, this little hiking trail out east. Weâd stay in these cabins for the weekend, just the two of us.â
âOhâŚkay?â you said, confusion evident in your voice and on your face. Perry took a deep breath, and when he let it out he looked ⌠tired. A little defeated, a little sad.
âShe wasnât there, obviously. But when I was there I realized ⌠I realized Iâm never going to stop waiting for her to come home,â he said, the last bit coming out in a rush. âIâm not over her. I thought I was ready to move on, move forward, for Amyâs sake but I just ⌠Iâm not there.â
Though he hadnât made eye contact with you the whole time he was speaking, he gave your hand a gentle squeeze and turned to look you in the eye. You could see the discomfort, the heartbreak swirling in his eyes. âItâs not fair to you. To be married to someone whoâs always going to be waiting for someone else. And then when Deputy Sheriff Hawk called me ââ
âTo tell you about the license?â You asked and he nodded, looking uncomfortable.
âI promise, I didnât know about it before then. It didnât even occur to me that Rebecca would have to be ⌠well, you know, before our marriage would be dissolved. I wouldnât have proposed if I knew. Hell, I wouldnât have even asked you out that first time.â
Perry sighed again, before continuing, âIt just made me realize that Iâm still married to her in my heart as well. And I just canât do that to you. Iâm sorry, sweetheart.â
You nodded absently, letting his words wash over you. âWhat about Amy, though? She and I have gotten so close ââ
âYou can still see Amy! Of course you can, she adores you. And I know how much you care about her,â he reassured you.
You felt a rush of relief. Amy was the reason you said yes to his proposal in the first place; it was almost as if the knowledge that you could still spend time with this brilliant, special little girl that you had come to consider family had outweighed any potential heartbreak from Perry ending the engagement.
But then again, maybe ending the engagement was exactly what you had been hoping for since the moment you laid eyes on Rhett.
You have to tell him. Itâs only fair.
âI understand, Perry,â you said and you could see the relief visibly wash over him. âI do, I completely understand. Thank you for being honest with me.â
Before he could speak, you continued, wanting to rush the words out as quickly as possible, âI guess ⌠I guess if Iâm going to be honest with you too, Iâve been having second thoughts myself. I ⌠I started to have feelings. For someone else. And I felt terrible about it, the guilt has been eating me up.â
Perry swallowed hard. âDid you â while I was away did anything ââ
âNo!â you rushed to explain. âNo, nothing happened. I didnât do anything with anyone else I just ⌠just having feelings for someone else made me feel guilty enough. I couldnât do that to you. But I think itâs clear weâre just ⌠not âthe oneâ for each other.â
He surprised you by standing up abruptly and pulling you to your feet as well, before giving you a tight hug. It felt good, like a fitting end to your amicable relationship to part ways amicably.
Of course things got a little less amicable later that evening when, after you handed back the ring and enjoyed a pleasant dinner, you both sat down with Amy to break the news. She seemed a little confused at first, but brightened when she learned that you would still be around for her.
âOkay,â she said after a minute, when you had explained the situation as best as you could to the 9-year-old. âThatâs okay. You can date Uncle Rhett instead! I think he likes you.â
Perryâs face turned a bright shade of red. âWhat?!â
Despite Amyâs permission, you didnât start dating Rhett after that.
In fact, you were continuing to avoid him, maybe out of lingering guilt or maybe out of a fear that he didnât actually mean those words he said that night at the Handsome Gambler.
It had been nearly two weeks since you had laid eyes on that handsome cowboy when you suddenly had a knock on your door on a late, sunny Sunday morning. You turned down the music you had been playing while you cleaned â Linda Ronstadt, of course â and opened the door, only to come face to face with the man you had been trying you best not to think about.
âHi,â Rhett said, a little shy as he ran his fingers nervously through his hair. You could see his ball cap tucked into one of his back pockets and a small bouquet of wildflowers in his other hands and butterflies erupted in your stomach at the sweet, gentlemanly gestures.
âHi,â you responded, a smile growing across your face before you could contain it. âItâs good to see you, Rhett. Do you ⌠do you wanna come in?â He grinned at your words; clearly he was a little nervous that you wouldnât be as excited to see him on your doorstep as you hoped.
He pressed the flowers into your hands as he made his way into your apartment, his big hands wrapping around yours and his shoulders taking up almost the entire doorway. After you closed the door and turned to face him, you both stood there, smiling a little giddily at one another, though neither of you moved. The tension was broken when you both tried to speak at the same time, tripping over your words as you both tried to break the awkward silence.
Laughing, you gently placed the flowers down on your coffee table and took a step closer to Rhett. His big blue eyes were fixed on your face, bright and shining and hopeful. You gestured towards your couch, silently inviting him to make himself at home, but he just ran his hands through his hair again and continued standing.
âI know it hasnât been very long since you and Perry ⌠ended things,â he began and your stomach swooped like you were on a roller coaster. âBut well, I talked to him a bit, and heâs not the biggest fan of the idea, but I think heâll come around and ⌠listen. What Iâm trying to say. Can I take you to dinner?â
âWhat?â You asked, a little incredulous that Rhett Abbott, the guys of your dreams, was standing in your living room and asking you on a date.
âLet me take you to dinner. I canât â I canât stop thinking about you. Iâm crazy about ya,â he said, grinning as he watched a small smile break out across your face. âWe can take it slow if you want but I just â I meant what I said. I wish I had met you before Perry. That I had a chance to ask you out first. But asking you out now is the next best thing.â
âIâd love to go to dinner with you, Rhett,â you said softly, smile growing bigger and brighter as you watched his eyes light up with excitement.
âYeah?â he asked, hopeful and puppy-like.
âYeah,â you breathed, taking a step closer to him and breathing in the scent of his body wash, taking in the freckles across his nose and the dimples hiding next to his smile. âIâm crazy about you too. You remember when you asked me to tell you a secret?â
He nodded, one gorgeous, beefy forearm wrapping around your waist and tugging you even closer.
âThat was my secret. That I couldnât stop thinking about you,â you ran your hands up Rhettâs broad chest, feeling the muscles that lay under his soft tee shirt. âI still canât stop thinking about you. I ⌠Iâve never felt like this before, about anyone. Just you.â
Rhett didnât respond. Instead, he held you close, slid his free hand up to cup your face and kissed you. And you there your arms around his neck and kissed him back.
It was like every moment, every bump in the road, every teasing glance, every little joke, every whispered confession was leading to this kiss. Rhett held you like you were precious and kissed you like it was the last time heâd ever get to do so.
But it wasnât the last time. It was far, far from the last time if you had anything to say about it.
You felt his tongue brush against your lips and you opened your mouth to let him in, head swimming as he gripped you tighter, breathed a little heavier, kissed you a little dirtier. A little more passionate, a little more intense â a little more like you had dreamed about all those late nights when you were still pretending that your feelings for him didnât exist.
After he pulled away, chuckling softly as your lips chased his for a moment, Rhett rubbed his thumb against your cheek, sparking a wave of goosebumps down your arms. He grinned, panting a little, those blue eyes bright and staring right back at you in adoration.
âWait a second,â you said, a little breathlessly as one more thought occurred to you. âArenât you leaving soon? You have a spot on a tour.â
Rhett shrugged like it was no big deal, but a feeling almost like panic was starting to grip you. âI have a couple of weeks. We can see where this goes and maybe if you want ⌠you could come with me?â he asked tentatively.
You didnât respond; you just pulled him back in for another heart stopping, mind melting kiss.
Much later â after the hours of kissing in your living room, after a first date where you spent so long talking and laughing at the diner that you were practically chased out by the staff, after a night of stargazing in the back of his truck, after those blissful first weeks of a relationship, a month of painful long distance and three more of you joining him on the road, after you both settled back in Wabang with another tour on the horizon, after Perry finally came around to the idea of you two being together â you sat in your motherâs kitchen with Rhett by your side and his grandmotherâs engagement ring on your finger.
She had just broken out the old bottle of whiskey she kept on top of the fridge for special occasions, when she asked you the same question she had asked a little over a year prior, when you were talking about your engagement to Perry.
âBaby, do you love him?â
You looked at Rhett, took in his beautiful face, his beaming smile, his hair, a little mussed up because he couldnât stop running his hands through it on your way over here, and the way those blue eyes always made you feel like the most beautiful woman on earth.
âYes, mama. I love him awful.â

Drew out my BLOSC sona!
Her name is Outer. She's meant to be a space butterfly or a moth alien hybrid. Outer is a little shy around as the new ranger but she is really brave and open minded on missions with Buzz and the team.
(cw: blood, mutilated arms, burn scars)
Having her home and kind attacked by Zurg and his Hornet robots. She was about to retreat with a few burn marks on her face when suddenly, the large parts of the dome crushed onto her right arms. And Outer had no choice but to brutally pull her arms off, resulting in them tearing off.
Luckily Star Command was able to find her unconscious from the attack. They gave her robotic arms to replace her old ones and are capable of releasing energy blasts.

Most of the cluster finished Void Stranger, my wife is edging her play session of Outer Wilds which my nbf is also starting, the rest of the cluster is starting Zero Ranger as well, which I'll 2P with at least my wife, hopefully with my gfs too đâ¨
I also remember my girlfriend starting a P3P run! đđâ¨
I'm soooo lucky đŠâ¨đâ¨đ
Will I get greedy and try to get them to play Fear and Hunger? đŤ˘
I also REALLY need to understand the gameplay loop of No Man's Sky, it does feels like there's tons of things to do but I'm barely finding anything đŠ
I also cannot wait for our Guilty Gear sessions to come back as well. (whoever loses puts on a maid's dress and sits on the winner (? đŤ˘đ, my fashion style is basically a maid's dress so you will be able to assume my play level đ
)
Part of me wished League was still playable, a group of 5 with at least 4 players with experience? It's so sad the game ceased to exist tho, I loved Lillia so much... Any game of 5 players would come in clutch... Sea of Thieves maybe...?

The Halocline - Rhett Abbott x Reader
Summary: Reader gets roughed up a bit, Rhett comforts her
Warnings: reader is the victim of violence, descriptions of wounds, descriptions of a panic attack, no spoilers for outer range
Word count: 1.9K
Authors note: My friend sent my a requests with rhett abbott saying "Hey, just look at me. Breathe." ... I shamefully finally got around to it.. so here we are...
Keep reading below the cut
The cool Wyoming night air brushed against your exposed skin, each step carrying you closer to the Abbott house. Certainly someone was here, if not Rhett, since he wasnât answering his phone. You prayed he was just asleep or his phone had died, and thatâs why he wasnât answering any of your calls. The porch groaned under your feet when you hobbled up the steps, up toward the door.Â
You knocked once. No answer. It was late, late enough that most of the house would likely be asleep by now, having to get up early tomorrow for chores around the ranch. Cecilia was a light sleeper though, that you could count on. So you knocked again, this time with a little more force. Still no answer.
âCâmon, Rhett!â You cried, voice hoarse from the sobs that wracked your body earlier, raw from screaming for any kind of help that never came.Â
Your fist pounded desperately against the screen door, the tinny noise echoed into the open air and died off in the howling wind. There was always someone in the Abbott house, of course except when you needed them the most. âShit.â You mutter under your breath.
Goosebumps rose along the flesh of your arms, the reddened welts from earlier burning as you sucked in a deep breath and tried to figure out your next move. Tears welled in your eyes as a hopeless feeling settled deep in your chest, but you refused to let them fall, not until you were somewhere safe again. Trembling, torn up hands reach up to scrub at your face as you turned toward the barn.Â
You noticed a faint yellow light flickering through the cracked barn door, likely forgotten by someone earlier. It wasnât the comforting embrace of Rhett, but it would have to do. The barn was far better than trying to walk back to the pit bar to get your car and risk running into Trevor again. God knows what he would try this time. Maybe if you were lucky one of the Abbotts would find you here in the morning when they started their morning chores around the ranch.Â
So with a grunt, you slowly made your way over to the barn where you would hopefully hide out amongst the bails of hay. Your footsteps were heavy, weighed down with exhaustion as you crossed into the barn, the dusty smell of hay and motor oil hitting your nose. To your surprise, a familiar form was hunched over the back workbench, a white cowboy hat hiding a head full of sandy brown hair. You nearly could have collapsed from relief.
âRhett?â You swallowed around the lump in your throat.Â
âSweetheart- what are you doinâ out here so late?â Rhett inquired, turning as he wiped his oil covered hands on an old rag.Â
Stood in place, you couldnât muster the strength to step any further into the light, to expose yourself to the careful scrutiny of his deep blue gaze. The sweet, lopsided smile that pulled at Rhettâs thin lips was discarded quickly, the tattered rag left on the dirt floor when he noticed the tear stained sheen on your cheeks. âSweetheart? What happened?â His voice was heavier this time.
âI-..â All the air in your lungs dried up, leaving your chest deflated and empty. Paralyzed, your panicked gaze met his as you tried to choke in a breath. No air came though. Rhett saw your chest spasm with the effort of trying to suck in air. Quick to action, his booted feet carried him over to where you stood, though dread took pooled heavily in his gut.
âJesus-â He gasped, his warm breath puffing out against your battered face. The first thing he noticed now that he was closer was the gash that marred your forehead, a steady trickle of blood trailed down the side of your temple and down your cheek. The second thing he noticed was the smattering of dark splotches that shadowed your skin, likely to be deep purple bruises by the morning. The third thing he noticed was you were without the sweater you always had on at this time of year. The neckline of your shirt was torn, seams ripped and stained crimson. You trembled in your spot, still frozen in place, skin peaked as shivers wracked your body.Â
Rhett was quick to shuck off his jacket and drape it over your shoulders and tuck you into the warm fabric. His large, steady hands ran along the length of your arms, trying to rid you of the constant shivering. âHoney- who did this to you?â He kept his tone level, despite the anger that welled up inside him.Â
You tried to answer, mouth opening around the Tillerson boyâs name, but all that came was a strained croak. Hot tears fell down your cheeks, burning as they rolled past the areas of broken skin. Hiccups soon took over, and breathing grew even harder. âOh god!â You say between cries, grabbing a fist of hair and tugging at it hard enough that pain pricked your scalp. Anything to distract you from this drowning feeling that resided heavy in your chest.
With as much tender care as he could, Rhett grabbed a hold of your wrists and detangled your vice grip from your hair. His warm hands came to rest on your flushed cheeks, careful to avoid any area that looked cracked open. His touch was firm and steady as he squeezed just enough, holding your head steady and in line with his. âHey..â He loosed a breath, barely a whisper as he searched your eyes.
âHey, just look at me. Breathe.â He instructed in a collected manner, held you steady in his grasp despite thrashing like a bull against his hold. âSweetheart, breathe for me. You can do it.â Wild eyes met his, and for the first time that night you finally felt safe. At first, your breaths came in frantic puffs, but you focused on trying to force the air from your lungs and exchange it for new air, inhaling deeply and blowing it out on a steady controlled exhale.Â
âThatâs it, good job. Keep goinâ.âHe encouraged, leaning in to press a kiss to your forehead, despite the dried blood that flaked against your skin.Â
You stayed like that for a while, breathing in and out, until Rhett was satisfied that you werenât going to pass out on him from a lack of air. Now that the adrenaline had eddied away, your head throbbed in time with your bounding heartbeat. You winced, shying away from the light once again. âRhett I-â
âLetâs get you inside and cleaned up, okay?âÂ
There was no fight left, so you allowed Rhett to guide you into the house and up the rickety steps to the first clearing, where his room was. His hand stayed put on your low back, a calming presence as he pushed you into the threshold of his room and shut the door, careful not to wake anyone as it creaked shut.Â
First he pulled off his jacket from your shoulders, blue eyes roaming over your skin. Now that he was in better light, he could see the large welts that covered your arms, and how your shirt was ripped in more than one place. His lips pressed together to keep the questions at bay, now wasnât the time for an interrogation. He needed to get you patched up and in bed.Â
âCome on.â He spoke softly as he took hold of your hand and brought it to his lips before he tugged you toward the bathroom.Â
You hovered awkwardly in the doorway, unsure what to do with yourself. That was okay, Rhett knew what to do - probably better than anyone else in this house. His hands peeled away your tattered shirt and tossed it aside. He helped you sit on the countertop before turning on the faucet. The sound of the water filling up the sink was the only noise as you watched him rummage through the closet in search of the well used first aid kit. Rhett made quick work, using a pack of gauze to clean up your forehead so he could assess the damage. He didnât think youâd need stitches, but he held pressure for good measure. You sucked in a breath, trying to back away from his hand. He muttered a soft sorry while he leaned in and pressed a warm kiss to your forehead.Â
âI was at the pit bar.â You mumbled, averting your gaze to your hands which gripped your thighs tightly. âI was just on my way out when Trever Tillerson wouldnât let me past.âÂ
The words were heavy on your tongue, like you didnât quite have the right words to say. Rhett didnât stop cleaning your wound, needed to keep his hands moving so he didnât do something stupid like track Trever down and kill him. You knew he was listening though. A muscle in his jaw ticked when you mentioned the name, he knew what kind of reputation Trever had. âI tried to push past him, told him I wasnât in the mood for his antics tonight. He didnât like that.â The tears came softer this time, only rolling down your flushed cheek when you squeezed your eyes shut. âNo one else was around, I tried calling out. He-â
âItâs okay. You donât have to talk about it. Not right now.âÂ
âThank you.â You sighed.Â
Rhett finished cleaning your wound in silence, placing an antibiotic ointment over the open part and smoothed a bandaid over the broken skin. His hands firmly grabbed your hips and helped you off the counter, led you back into the bedroom. He grabbed one of his old t-shirts, knowing how much you liked to sleep in them.Â
âArms up.â He instructed, sliding the tshirt over your head and helped you slide your arms through the holes. He then knelt down before you, sliding off your jeans, his warm hands grazing along your thighs. You grabbed ahold of his shoulder to steady yourself as he helped you step out of the fabric. âThere you go.âÂ
As Rhett stood back up, he looked down at you, his gaze uncertain. A line formed between his brows, his eyes bouncing between your own as if searching through your soul. He whispered a soft âcâmereâ and pulled you into his strong embrace. His hands wrapped tightly around your shoulders and tucked you against his chest. You inhaled deeply, smelling the familiar, comforting scent of leather and tobacco he always carried. This was what home felt like. You nuzzled into him, muscles releasing the tension they held onto.Â
âI love you.â Those three words felt right, certain even. Despite the nightâs events, you knew you would be okay as long as you had Rhett.Â
âI love you too, sweetheart.â His pressed another kiss to the top of your head, and then tucked you under his chin. You listened to the steady beat of his heart, slightly faster than it usually was, as it thudded against your ear.Â
It would be alright. This was your home. Rhett was your home.

Birthday Blurbs: 06/15
The only prize worth winninâ @ y/n Happy birthday sugar
Rhett was a shy, reserved guy, not a PDA kind of guy. Cecelia and Royal didnât make his or Perryâs birthdays a big deal. When your birthday landed on the same day as one of his rodeo events, he ensured all the buckle bunnies knew he was happily taken. It wasnât a lot but Rhettâs first public display of affection caught on camera; it was exactly what you wanted and more.

Outer Banks Power Rangers AU
Me doing the Lord's work after the non existent Season 4. This is inspired by Harry Potter and Who the Fuck are The Pogues!? by new_huntress_02 on AO3.
(and for those who arenât in the know, this is semi-inspired by the unadapted Mashin Sentai Kiramager season while also using Island themes with an original mentor and villain)
Power Rangers: Island Strike
In the sun-soaked, laid-back world of the Outer Banks, five teenagers from different walks of life are about to be thrust into a battle far beyond anything theyâve ever known. When an ancient alien force invades the peaceful planet of Altheria, its royal family is overthrown, and the galaxy is thrown into chaos. In the midst of this turmoil, Princess Zyra of Altheria, the last survivor of her royal lineage, flees to Earth to seek help.
She crashes onto the Outer Banks and, in a desperate attempt to recruit new allies, awakens a hidden, ancient power that chooses five unlikely heroes to become the new Power Rangers. These five Pogues are bound by their love for the island, its tight-knit community, and their growing connection to the cosmic energies that Zyra unlocks within them.
The team forms a powerful force known as the "Island Rangers," each armed with a special gemstone that harnesses the energy of their island's natural elements. 6. Zyra (The Mentor)

The planetâs power was drawn from five sacred gemstones, each imbued with incredible energy. In a desperate attempt to save her people and the crystals, Zyra escaped with the last remnants of her kingdomâs power, seeking refuge on Earth. She finds the Pogues and sees the potential within them to harness the powers of the gemstones and take back what was lost.
Connection to the Rangers: Zyraâs bond with the Rangers is deeply rooted in the gemstones themselves, as they share the same cosmic energy that once powered her kingdom. She is not only a mentor but also a protector, guiding the Rangers in harnessing their new powers and preparing them for the inevitable battle against Xaltor's forces.
Powers: Zyra can communicate with the Rangers telepathically and provide them with guidance during battle. She has access to an advanced form of the gemstonesâ energy, allowing her to heal or amplify their powers when needed. However, due to the damage to her planet, her own abilities are limited, and she must rely on the Rangers to lead the fight.
Power Rangers: Island Strike blends the fiery action and excitement of Power Rangers with the adventurous spirit of the Pogues. The teamâs dynamic is based on their friendships and the strong bonds they share. Each Ranger brings something unique to the team, whether itâs leadership, intellect, bravery, or strength. Zyraâs alien background adds an element of mystery and intrigue as the team navigates the growing threat from Xaltor's forces.
The story will explore themes of resilience, teamwork, and the balance between adventure and responsibility, as the Rangers learn to master their powers, defend their home, and ultimately face the forces that threaten not only their island but the entire universe.

(cw: robot death)
"Star Command by contact! This is Ranger Outer. I have arrived in the city known as... Trade World," the alien ranger responds, "it is reported that there has been a serious threat. A really dangerous one that is causing many deaths of the robotic residents in here. But for myself have my four eyes open to spot this and bring them down. Outer, out!" Outer now hangs up her call.
Outer was sent to her mission by Commander Nebula, across the futuristic cities of Trade World to destroy the threat causing hundreds of lives of its robotic residents. With the help of Star Command's robotic ranger XR, who he promised to keep an eye on her. They both began scattering around the streets to see if the threat is there.
"Well... seems like everyone around Trade World are out and about by now, wouldn't you say Outer." XR asked.
"...Outer?" But there isn't a response from the alien ranger till he spots her taking a photo of a building "Hey, Outer my friend" he chuckled as he sees her distracted by her camera before taking it away in her hand. "Not into tourist business here. We are in real business against the energy vampire here." The robot stretched his legs due to his short size, allowing him to nudge his elbow on her second left arm.
"Oh, sorry XR, it's just that this place is new to me and it's all so... future looking here," Outer explained, "it's no big deal."
"But yeah, about the threat you were saying. You said that you used to be in his control." Outer walked along with him. By then, a shadow on the wall approached and the only colour it shows is a red eye, and screeching like a vampire bat.
--âĄ--
Outer's antennas twitch in alert, to the sounds of screeching, she gasped and looked up at the sky and there she sees the shadow swooping above by her four eyes. "XR? Did you... see what I saw?" She asked her partner. "You meanâ" before he thinks, a sudden scream is heard. Making the two run over to where it is coming from far across this town.
"Woah, ohâoh..." XR gasped, making the two stop at a puddle of oil on the ground, leading them a trail to... the victim. She lived in Trade World, and appears to be lying dead on the ground. They both walk slowly, over to her. "Oh... wh-who would d-do such a t-t-terrible, awful to my dear wife" A male robot sobs over the death of his cybernetic wife, wiping an oily tear of his face.
Outer feels sympathetic for him, as she places her robotic right arm on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, sir... but don't worry. We shall take care of who took your dear wife's life!"
"C'mon X," and with a heart of determination, Outer sprints out.
"Get your four eyes out for him Outer, we don't want either to us to be caught." XR follows her around.
--âĄ--
During their search, Outer's antennas twitch to the sounds of a bat screeching. When she turns her head, her eyes widened that the vampire figure is coming towards her and XR. "XR! About the beast we are searching, yes? And right now... he is coming straight towards usâNOW!"
"Oh and well if isn't my old dark master NOS-4-A2!" XR spots him with his legs stretched up to Outer's height. "Guess I was right... that you were his master... well, not right now." The alien ranger raises her cybernetic arm, it's energy releases a laser which goes through his chest.
NOS screeches in pain from her attack. He spots the alien's two cybernetic arms charging more energy blasts. "How lovely~ Something new to feast my fangs on to~" The vampire robot now in thirst for her arms, charges straight at Outer.
He pounced her to the ground. "You... vampire! Let me... go!" Outer demanded, grabbing onto the energy vampire's arms. "Not if I can get a divine taste of delicious energy on these new arms for me~"
"Alright NOS-4-A2... your going down!" XR releases a ray blast at the vampire before he intents to suck out Outer's energy off of her right arm. His clawed hand begans to slightly burn by XR's blast, which lets the alien break free from his grasp. He holds onto his burned hand, growling in rage. "You... I'll kill you little one, right after I, NOSâ"
"Taste this here vampire!" Outer releases her laser at NOS, but that eventually caught straight in his mouth. "Aw... b-bolts!"
"Hm... lovely~"
Her reaction almost gets her a little flustered... perhaps easily smitten by his tone of voice. "Oh hell no... he's fine." Right before the ranger facepalmed her blushing face.
--âĄ--
As NOS flies across Trade World, holding onto the alien-like moth. Outer's four eyes flutter open to something... something that is so bright. Her maroon eyes sparkle to his reddish orange coloured wings, which brings out Outer's moth like trait; attraction to anything that can be so bright. This causes her to almost reach out for his wings.
"What is it little one?" When he lifts Outer to his face. The alien moth's eyes dilate more to his red monocle, also glowing brightly to attract Outer more.
She began to grab his shoulders and place her face on his cheek where she can stare at his glowing monocle, with the alien smiling. NOS began to smile as well, even letting out a chuckle by finding that little smile to be so cute. "You are such a little moth... bold and smart, but those tiny eyes you have~" NOS chuckled when he traces down her cheek "They make you see of what interests you~ isn't it little one~?"
"I... I... yes?..." Because of how flustered she is started to get from his words, Outer just said these words awkwardly right as she places her robotic hand on her blushing cheek.

As a boy my mom picked up the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet books by Carey Rockwell for me at garage sales. They were about a boy learning to become a space ranger. The first in the series was Stand by for Mars! (1952) I loved the adventure and suspense, they were much more interesting than hardy boys at the time ďżź. As I got older, I realized they were loosely based on Robert Heinleinâs Space Cadet, a 1948 science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein about Matt Dodson, who joins the Interplanetary Patrol to help preserve peace in the Solar System. The story translates the standard military academy story into outer space: a boy from Iowa goes to officer school, sees action and adventure, shoulders responsibilities far beyond his experience
As a boy who watched the first human to walk on the surface of the moon, I somehow thought I might have a chance for adventure in space, unfortunately, the opportunity has not risen, however, I still have the great memories and, these books.
