The Brio’s Bachelor Pad

Overview:

The Lad’s house is a 2 ½ bath, 3 bedroom house that was built in the 1970s sometime most likely. It has a lovely spacious back yard. Very typical house: wood floors, carpeted bedrooms. A good space for parties. There isn’t really anything special about it, which is kind of the point. I figured this would be a good house to layout for everyone, since we’ve held a few parties there, and probably will have more! Also, it was funny because a few weeks back we were discussing the layout and all three of us drew versions of it--and I used that as the basis for the final version! (Credit to Pet for all the awesome Sims pics!)

The living room is a decent size, very normal. The one piece of “art” they have is a football banner. The couch has a lot of crumbs. The couch cushions slightly askew as well because they just fall all over it and Gilly will jump up there, especially when someone comes home and she is excited and wants pets. They have a massive telly, of course. There is one stain on the carpet in the living room that John has never been able to get out, so they moved the couch onto it so John didn’t have to stare at it anymore. The door to the right from this view is the coat closet (included because it’s where Jane and John were locked, lol.) They also have a ping pong table which is like smack in the middle of the floor between the living room and the dining room. (Terrible.)

2. Dining Room

You can see where the keg is stood up here. Though, it’s normally put in the mud room between parties (though, it can sit out for a few days without anyone doing anything with it.) The table is pretty normal, but as you can see in the far corner, this is where Gilly’s food/water bowls are, because she eats with the boys whenever they are at the table.

3. Kitchen

Phil has broken three coffee makers at this point. The window that they use as a makeshift bar (which you can see better in the above dining room picture) houses Phil’s beer can (and energy drink can!) pyramid most of the time, but they dismantle it every party so it can be reborn. The kitchen is actually kept decently clean, unless John hasn’t been home all day. Tom probably leaves out like mustard and ketchup from when he makes sandwiches all the time. Also, there is another keg, also stored away usually. Sometimes this one lives on the back porch too.

4. Mudroom

Not very exciting, but we had some weird extra space so we gave them a mudroom. TBH -- they probably store some Order stuff in her amongst the kegs and the other random stuff they put in here.

5. Back Porch/Yard

The back porch! Of course they have those shitty fold up chairs instead of real porch furniture. Lots of space for Gilly to run about. Also, a grill, for when they have parties and such.

6. John’s Room/Bathroom

John’s room is always ship shape with never a book nor drawer out of place. He doesn’t have much in the way of personalization side from a couple staged family holiday photos and one photo of his father shaking his hand at an award ceremony for completing training with high marks. He does however, have a four picture photo frame hanging on the wall with photos of him with each of his lads and two photos of them all together, grinning like as kids and also grinning as adults. On his dresser he has a large model ship that he completed because he was urged to find something that relaxed him (it didn’t really). On his desk, binders and books and various papers are neatly organized. In a locked drawer in his desk are hanging folders filled with Order information and various request and report forms.

His bathroom is the same as his room, immaculate with only very few products. His medicine cabinet is even organized. His closet is organized from coats to jackets to dress shirts to short sleeved shirts to the various pants he has and racks for ties belts and even shoes are also found in there was well.

7. Tom’s Room

Tom hasn’t decorated much. He has photos on his dresser of his family and like one painting of a stormy sea and a lighthouse or some shit like that. One of his sisters picked it out for him and he’s toted it from place to place dutifully. His bed is actually always made (habit left over from the Navy) and his room is always clean because of the same reason. He actually doesn’t spend much time in his room. A lot of the time he sleeps over at the fire station while on shift. Even when he’s home, he hangs out mostly in the living room watching telly, or is outdoors until it is time to sleep.

Gilly’s bed is also in his bedroom, but she usually sleeps with him, unless he has Rose over or something. Then she is banished to the dog bed. :(

8. Tom and Phil’s Bathroom

Phil is the worst about not cleaning up after shaving. The toilet is kinda gross too. He picked out the shower curtain here though. Tom is actually rather neat, so he makes up for a lot of Phil’s grossness, but Phil’s grossness also doesn’t bother him, so he’ll clean if he knows he has someone coming over and will complain @ phil for not cleaning up after himself, but it doesn’t really bother him.

9. Phil’s Room

The bed is rarely made completely, though he’ll sometimes tug the comforter up. He does at least have a full bedsheet set, which he did pick out on his own, though he could stand to wash it more. The floor usually has a pile of laundry scattered around. Across from his bed is his desk, which is full of papers and books and notebooks. He also has a lone cactus on there, courtesy of Aurora, as well as a framed picture of his family from long ago (pre-Rosie’s death) and a picture of the three lads together. Hanging over the desk is an sketch of an old estate that he found in a thrift store bin. He decorates a little more than the other two – over his bed is a Pride U pennant and next to it a Kill Bill poster. He has a bookshelf in his room, with an ever growing collection. His dresser usually has shirts that he needs to put away – along with more books and some cologne and toiletry stuff because he does put effort into his appearance, thank you very much. Also has a trunk of stuff, also with books around.

The 3 Musketeers

Hello again! It is a bittersweet thing to say this will be our last post from New Zealand. We have had an absolutely wonderful time here and in part don’t want it to be over, but we are also ready to move on to our next adventure in Australia. We are looking forward to a little bit of routine and stability, as well as a new landscape to explore in a new van!!

The last time we checked in we had just finished the Kepler Track and were waiting to meet up with some friends of mine. We left Lake Dunstan and headed through a deep river/reservoir gorge between Cromwell and Alexandra to go see my college best friend, Camille, and her boyfriend, Aaron. They had been picking cherries and training young trees for about 7 weeks and when we arrived they had just finished their stint on the orchard. A lot of people here get a working holiday visa which allows them to stay for up to a year, and up to 2 years if 3 months of farm work is completed. Camille and Aaron were pretty sick of Alexandra so we headed out into the hills of Otago to camp for a few nights at a cool secluded freedom camp they knew of called St. Bathan’s place.

We spent 3 nights in St. Bathan’s and had a blast. It was situated around a bunch of cattle grazing pastures nearby to an old abandoned gold mine. The gold mining operation had left a large pit in the ground which over the decades filled up with rainwater and is now a lovely lake! We spent our first night there hanging out with Camille and Aaron and catching up on all of their adventures. We stayed up late into the night, having a few drinks, and freezing our toes off. It got really cold but we persisted in staying up and enjoying the amazing array of stars. We got full views of the milky way and it was definitely the best stargazing we’ve done during the trip. The next day we walked over to the lake and spent the day basking in the sun, listening to music, and climbing the fragile cliffs and jumping back down into the lake! We made dinner together and had another night of hanging out and listening to hilarious stories about Ireland, where Aaron is from.

The next day was very gloomy and we spent most of the day watching The Mandalorian in our van, great show, highly recommend. It cleared up in the evening and Camille and I were treated to a few impromptu duets from Bryn and Aaron once he had enough whisky to bust out his guitar.

The next day we left St. Bathan’s and went back to Alexandra to hang out at a lake nearby to the orchard Camille and Aaron worked on. It was an awesome lake with cool waterbirds and big cliffs all around. We hung out on the beach for a while and attempted our highest cliff jumping of the trip (~40 feet). It was a beautiful day and after taking care of some final logistical things in town, we all set out to a freedom camp in that river/reservoir gorge we came into town through called Champagne Gully. We enjoyed a last dinner together before going our separate ways the next morning. It was so much fun to see an old friend and spend a few days socializing, Bryn and I aren’t sick of each other but having other people around is nice sometimes :).

The next morning was my birthday! Woohoo. We spent the beginning of the day at a cafe so I could watch my favorite soccer team, Manchester United, play my least favorite soccer team, Chelsea. Since it was my birthday they made sure to win for me :). We had some lovely drinks and treats at the cafe to celebrate and then headed to Queenstown to shower at the free service station. Bryn had planned a special dinner/activity for my birthday but wouldn’t tell me what it was, just that we had to be in Queenstown that evening. After hanging at the service station and talking to my fam, we drove into downtown. We parked the car and walked along the docks until we reached a famous old steamship, the TSS Earnslaw and Bryn finally let me in on the secret - we were taking a steamboat cruise across Lake Wakatipu to a traditional farm for a gourmet all-you-can-eat bbq dinner. The cruise was beautiful and we stood out on the front deck while we braved the wind and enjoyed the view. The farm was immaculate and definitely used for private functions and weddings from time to time. There were tons of flower gardens and a cool old Victorian style house where dinner was served. We got a lovely table overlooking the water and treated ourselves to a little bit of everything they had to offer. I think I went back to the buffet 4 or 5 times and was very, very full by the end of it. After dinner they did a demonstration in this cool outdoor amphitheater of how they shear sheep as well as a live demonstration of their herding dogs herding a flock of sheep down a hill. The control of the dogs was incredible, using different pitched whistles to signal them to stalk, bark, run, stop etc. There were two dogs were highly adept in working together and it was an awesome learning experience. After that we got back on the boat and headed back across the lake. There was a piano singalong of old folk songs in the back of the boat and Bryn and I sat right up by the piano in the heart of the diehard geriatric singers and sang our voices hoarse - there were some people that were suuuuper into it and it was really fun and hilarious to be a part of. Bryn even requested happy birthday at the end and I got a nice birthday serenade from a bunch of strangers :).

The next day I got a wonderful belated birthday present :). My sister Madeline flew across the world to come visit us for 9 days. She arrived in the late afternoon and our first day we shopped for a few things, made a nice dinner in our Airbnb, and rested up so she could get over the jet lag quickly. The next morning we got up early and headed into town to kick off the festivities. We found a really good deal on a 3 person parasailing over Lake Wakatipu. It was such an amazing view as we were towed up behind a boat over the lake and a really fun way to kick things off. After our morning parasailing ride we walked around Queenstown and did a little bit of shopping before heading into the public flower gardens along the lake. After a lot of walking and minorly sore feet we decided to stop for lunch at a famous local restaurant called Fergberger. We got ourselves a meat pie, a burger, and the NZ version of a Boston creme donut. All of them were fantastic and a special treat, as we normally don’t eat meat or dairy.

We had planned to do a cruise on Milford sound the next day but the landslides had destroyed the roads and still were not open to personal vehicles. We didn’t want to spend ~250 dollars for a commercial coach and cruise upgrade option so we made a change of plans and headed back to Wanaka where Bryn and I spent a few days a couple of weeks back. We went back to some cool cliff jumping and lazy river spots we found and stayed at a huge open campground in the woods and made friends with a bike packer named Karl. He serenaded a family of ducks with his flute and he and Madeline were fast friends!

The next day we headed north up to Mt. Cook. We planned to go all the way up into Mt. Cook National Park but when we arrived the weather was very clouded and drizzly so we decided to wait until the next morning for better weather and camped at a lake. We made an amazing dinner of portabella mushroom burgers and red kumara (like a sweet potato) fries and snuggled up in the van to play a rousing game of monopoly. As monopoly always does, the game dragged on quite a bit, and I won by forfeiture - me and my sisters play monopoly back home so it was a really fun throwback game night. The next morning we got up early and drove an hour or so into the national park. We made a first stop and did a 3 km hike up to an overlook of the Tasman glacier. It was the first time Madeline had seen a glacier so that was really cool, and the views of the mountains were absolutely gorgeous. We continued up the road to its end where there were hundreds of cars/vans parked at the staging camp for a plethora of hikes. We opted not to join in on the difficult and crowded trails but just hung out, had some snacks, and enjoyed the view of NZ’s tallest mountain. After we left we had a hefty driving day and made it a long way south to yet another lakeside campground.

The next day we drove even further south to the town of Bluff. We had spent the last 3 nights staying at freedom camps in our van - we had to pitch a tent as well because the van really only has space for 2 people - and were a bit weary of the cold and loneliness accompanying being alone out in the tent so we booked some more cheap Airbnb’s. The Airbnb in Bluff was really nice and after driving to the end of the peninsula at the end of NZ we utilized the real kitchen space to make an Italian feast of salad, gnocchi and vegetarian bolognese sauce, and garlic bread (and a little bit of wine).

The next day we drove through the Catlins, a large forested area of southern New Zealand stopping along the way at some really cool natural features. We went to two different waterfall areas which each boasted multiple waterfalls and took in the beauty and got some great pictures. We stopped for a couple hours in a small town called Owaka so Madeline could take an online test back home which she took at the local library - after that we did a little souvenir shopping before heading to Jack’s Blowhole. After a sizable walk we made it to the blowhole, which was over 600 feet inland and nearly 400 feet deep! It was really crazy to see the tides flow in and out and spray up, we got there at high tide so it was in ideal form. After that we headed to Kaka Point, a small beautiful seaside town where we got another Airbnb up on the cliffs. Our host, Mary Jo, was super nice and gave us some good advice of what to do around there and let us play with her Red Heeler, Matty. I don’t have enough dogs in my life… :( The next morning we woke up very early to go to a lighthouse ~15 min away for sunrise. Madeline was in a sleepy stupor and was unable to rouse herself so Bryn and I made the journey on our own. It was really nice to be out in the early morning hours and we got some absolutely amazing views at Nugget Point. There were large rock outcropping all around the peninsula that looked like nugget of gold (or chicken). It was a lovely morning, despite a cloudy and slightly underwhelming sunrise. After going back to the Airbnb and making breakfast, we headed back through the Catlins to stop at some of the spots we didn’t have time to see on the first pass. We went to the famous Purakaunui falls as well as Curio bay. Curio bay had a petrified forest outcropping along the sea that is now home to the rarest species of penguin in the world. We were graced with a lucky sighting of the 2019 bird of the year, the Hoiho (noisy in Maori) or Yellow-eyed penguin. We were able to get reasonably close and watch it hang out along in petrified forest rocks. We went to a cafe afterwards and had some really nice snacks before heading to Weir Beach. We camped in a big open field along the ocean at the farthest south point in all of NZ this night and luckily, it wasn’t all that cold.

The next morning we got up early and drove to Dunedin for our final day together. We got to our Airbnb and after taking showers we went into town. We walked around town a bit, stopping in some art galleries and cool shops to get a few souvenirs. We got a gelato in the main square downtown and played ping pong in the park for a while. Afterwards we went to the Black Dog, a chic restaurant bar for a final meal together. We shared cream of tomato soup as a starter and a chocolate mousse for dessert, along with our individual entrees of course - it was a really nice last supper together. We headed back to the Airbnb and hung out and snuggled before going to bed. We got up and drove to the airport the next morning for Madeline’s very early flight - I was very sad to say goodbye to her but am so thankful she came. I miss her and my family a lot so it meant a lot to me that she came all this way to see me. <3

After we said goodbye to Madeline we packed up and did a long haul drive up to Christchurch where we are now. We will be in Christchurch for another ~2 weeks trying to sell our van and then we will head to Australia!!! Wish us luck selling the van, we might need it! :)

here’s part one!

Class ended two hours ago.

At least, if Lance was keeping his time right. And he was pretty sure he was.

Pidge was burning daylight, forcing him to wait for her.

He thought it would be a little creepy, to try and hang out in front of her dorm room and surprise her when she finally stepped out in her daytime glory. Did Pidge have a daytime glory? Was he imagining some sort of fantasy girl that didn’t really exist? How was Pidge’s daily routine? Clearly it was pretty messed up if she spent a couple of nights every week doing homework before the asscrack of dawn, right?

The anxiety was starting to get to him. He drummed his leg a little bit faster.

She wouldn’t have cancelled on him, right? Maybe he was wrong about when her classes ended. But she told him her schedule! He was pretty great at remembering things, but Pidge usually wasn’t, so maybe she did forget? Should he text her? Would it be annoying to text her?

Why was he so damn nervous?

Focus on something else.

His eyes drifted around the common room. It wasn’t particularly big, no, but it was comfortable. A small kitchen, a couple of couches and chairs and a television to sit and watch. A couple of guys had turned on Indiana Jones but were barely paying attention. Another girl was making herself a sandwich. He could hear a conversation down the hall, as more people approached the commons.

His heart began to hammer a little harder in his chest.

It wasn’t a date. Maybe. Pidge just called it a date by accident. Lance certainly didn’t want to think it was a date. After all, it was just Pidge and frozen yogurt. Just him and his weird night owl friend and a couple of bowls of delicious fro-yo.

Then he saw her.

It was a little disorienting, to say the least. He didn’t recognize her for a moment. Usually, he couldn’t make out Pidge’s features, because the commons at night were dark and she refused to turn on the light because “McClain, that wastes energy and we are not about to become earth murderers,” or something. He stood up quickly, smoothing out the wrinkles in his jacket, running a quick hand through his hair as Pidge got closer.

For someone he thought of as a friend, it was like meeting her for the first time.

She has freckles.

That was the first coherent thought Lance had.

“Hello McClain,” Pidge chirped, raising a hand in greeting. Green sweater, dark blue overalls. Beat up sneakers. Not what he expected. Or everything he expected?

A smattering of freckles.

Remember to speak, idiot.

“Uh. Hello! Yo. Hi, Pidge.”

Smooth like butter.

Pidge switched the weight of her footing, head cocking as she stared up at him. Her hair was tawny. Her eyes were honey.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?”

Lance blinked.

“The hell do you mean?”

She splayed her arms, doing a dramatically slow spin. “I’m here. During the day. The forbidden hours.”

He barked out a laugh. “I didn’t expect you to look so…”

He paused, biting his tongue. What was he going to say? Normal? Stylish? Pretty?

“What?”

“Well rested.”

There we go, settle with the joke. Pidge liked jokes.

“I didn’t expect you to look like a jackass.”

“Ah, that’s the Pidge I know and adore. Shall we?”

He offered his arm. She ignored him and pressed onwards.

“We shall.”

And it wasn’t a quiet journey. Lance would’ve preferred him and Pidge not having anything to talk about, in hindsight. He would’ve preferred a quiet, seemingly awkward walk to the bus stop without anything to talk to her about.

But Pidge was a secret powerhouse.

It threw him off, again. Lance hadn’t seen this side of Pidge before, ever. She was always… awkwardly chatty, to put it mildly. But here, beneath a bright blue sky and a shining sun, Pidge had an almost impenetrable air of absolute cool radiating off of her. She had a way of somehow knowing almost every person the pair passed by. A greeting there, a short breeze of a question that she seemed to know all the answers to, whether it was about a class meeting, a due date, a general “how’s your day going?”

“You’re… pretty popular,” Lance said casually, as she waved goodbye to a leaving pair of girls who had stopped her to ask about their next robotics meeting. Robotics. He didn’t know she was in the robotics club.

“I do a lot of extracurriculars,” Pidge said, unphased by the inquiry. “It keeps me busy between classes.”

“Jesus, and you still can’t find the time to get a good night of sleep?”

She laughed at him, throwing her head back as she did. “You know, I thought the same thing! One of these days I’ll finally have enough on my plate to knock my ass out at the sound, reasonable hour of… midnight.”

Lance instinctively elbowed her shoulder.

“Maybe push for two in the morning, first.”

“Har-har.”

He wasn’t sure when it happened during their stroll, but he was hyper-aware of it now. The weight of Pidge’s hand in his. It must’ve come naturally to him, or to her, or to both of them, because it wasn’t until they were at the bus stop did he realize she was swinging his arm with hers. Gently, almost unnoticeable, if Lance didn’t realize it was happening.

He gave her hand a squeeze, to test her, to see if Pidge also realized that at some indistinguishable walk from point A to B, their hands had intertwined.

She squeezed back.

And then the bus rolled up.

It was crowded, much to Lance’s expectation, and he wondered, quietly, if Pidge was alright with that. He looked back towards her as she filed in line behind him, and fortunately caught her eye. A smile.

“What?”

“Is… uh…” Lance looked around. “The crowding okay for you?”

“I’m not claustrophobic if that’s what you’re asking.”

“Oh. Cool, cool.”

There was a long pause, as Lance vice gripped the handgrip above him and the bus began to move. Pidge took hold of his other hand, not too tightly, the rest of her body leaning into the pole next to her.

“You’re claustrophobic?” came her voice. Lance let out a strained laugh.

“Don’t make fun of me.”

“I’m not,” Pidge said, and she returned to swinging his hand in hers. “I would never.”

The words were reassuring in a way Lance didn’t expect them to be. She gave him a sincere smile, and despite the lack of movement available, got as far away from him as she could. But she never did let go of his hand. Not until their stop came up in the city, and she had to let him go to ring the bell to be let off the bus.

It was a nice day for frozen yogurt, Lance decided.

It was a brisk walk to find the fated frozen yogurt place, because if Lance was honest, it wasn’t hard to find. A soft pink exterior, blue and white striped umbrellas, a neon sign that flashed the word “OPEN” like a lighthouse beckoning ships home. Pidge beat him to the door, swinging it open and bowing to him as he came up, as if she was a professional in opening doors for people.

“My good sir,” Pidge said, her voice dripping in a mocking posh accent. Lance let out a hard laugh, poking her in the shoulder as he stepped through the threshold.

“You’re so dumb.”

“Hey! That makes two of us. Twice the dumbasses.”

They fed into the line, which was about three other people in front of them, eyes reading over the different slowly-spinning machines filled with about twenty different frozen yogurt flavors.

“Are you a fruit or chocolate person?” Pidge asked, hands aimlessly twisting and turning her empty fro-yo container.

“I usually go for fruit flavors. Why?”

“Interesting. I like chocolate.”

“Somehow that doesn’t surprise me.”

“With like, peanut butter cups.”

“Again, not shocking.”

“And sour patch kids.”

Lance blinked, giving Pidge a double-take. For a brief, bliss moment, he had fallen for it.

That is, until he saw the shit-eating grin she was giving him.

“I dare you to do that.”

“What? No! That totally messes up my carefully curated flavor profile, McClain!”

Lance shrugged, trying to keep his smile on lockdown, not when this was the perfect opportunity to act nonchalant. “Maybe you shouldn’t have suggested it.”

“God, if you’re daring me to do that, then…” She spends a long time thinking. Almost too long. “All the toppings.”

“That renders it inedible!”

“If you do it, I’ll do it. Then we’ll both have inedible frozen yogurt.”

“That completely misses the point of getting frozen yogurt.”

She grinned. “Then I guess we’d have to make it up by going out again, right?”

And despite himself, Lance’s heart stammered to a stop.

Going out.

Again?

With him?

Pidge crouched, maneuvering around Lance, talking as she makes her way to her preferred brownie fudge flavor. “So, are we doing this or not?”

“Uh,” Lance began, standing up straighter, aware of the heat that went from the tips of his ears to his toes. “Doing what?”

“All the toppings. Duh.”

“Oh. Yeah. Yeah, definitely.”

He trailed behind her, almost aimless, and Lance’s mind went a mile a minute. He couldn’t have a crush on her, right? She was just his weird gremlin night-owl friend. She was his weirdly comforting rock in the middle of the night when he couldn’t sleep and it was nice to walk into the commons and just find her existing in that space. She was some turd who listened to him vent and gave weird advice and always had something to say that made him laugh. She was just Pidge, after all.

Maybe that’s what he liked about her, that she was just Pidge.

She had a look of triumph on her face when they reached the end of the toppings line, while the employee gave them both a confused, tired look. They paid a lot more than just his savings from the failed blind date. Not that either seemed to mind.

“This is disgusting,” Lance said, once they decided to settle in one of the outdoor sitting areas. Pidge let out a laugh, lifting up a spoonful of toppings with hardly any yogurt.

“Just close your eyes and pretend you’re not eating a horrifying amalgamation of sugary, fruity, savory, chocolatey--”

“I got the gist of it. Please stop.”

She let out another laugh, digging her spoon into the horror, mixing as carefully as she could. “So what’s the plan after we eat as much of this monster yogurt as we can?”

Lance blinked, weighing a spoonful of Oreo cookie bits and gummy bears. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” she leaned in, spearing her yogurt with the spoon. “Do you want to keep hanging out, Lance?”

“Well, obviously. We’re friends,” he stressed the last word, hoping to convince himself. “It’d be dumb if I wanted to stop hanging out with you.”

She studied him for a moment, head bobbing up and down in slow motions. “Okay. Yeah, you’re right. It’d be dumb if we stopped hanging out with each other.”

She dug back into her yogurt, eating a bit faster, and Lance cocked his head to the side.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

A stop. A crunch of a bad combination of toppings.

“I like hanging out with you,” Pidge said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “But this was weird, right? Hanging out like… like normal people.”

Her voice dropped as she said it, a teasing grin on her lips. Lance snorted.

“It’s only weird if you make it weird, you know.”

“I know! But it’s like,” she waved her spoon at him. “We’re totally different people out here. No one understands our dynamic. It’s so exposing.”

Lance let out a laugh, almost shy. “Who cares, dude? I like you. Not what people think of you.”

She froze in her stance, spoon dripping chocolate frozen yogurt onto the table, and Lance moved quick to clean it up with a napkin. Slowly, Pidge dropped her spoon back into her bowl, gaze unwavering from Lance. He looked back, beaming.

“What’s up now, Pidge?”

“Sorry. That was just a really nice thing to say. I like you too, Lance.”

There was warmth in her tone, warmth that was almost too easy for Lance to read as anything other than platonic. It made his heart stammer. It made his knees weak. But he wasn’t going to let that show.

Quickly, he jabbed his own spoon towards her nose, letting out a shit-eating laugh.

“You called me Lance again!”

Pigeon Point Light Station, CA (No. 2)

Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the Pacific coast. The tower stands on a rocky promontory and has long been a landmark for ships approaching San Francisco Bay from the south. This headland, and hence the lighthouse, took its name from the ship Carrier Pigeon that wrecked here in 1853.

The lantern room of the tower is no longer equipped with the original first-order, 1000-watt Fresnel lens. No longer illuminated for demonstration purposes,the lens has 24 flash panels, is composed of 1008 hand-polished lenses and prisms and is capable of producing over 500,000 candlepower illumination. It was manufactured by the Henry-LePaute company in Paris, France and was first lit at Pigeon Point at sunset on November 15, 1872.

Originally the tower was equipped with a lamp that burned refined lard oil (pig fat). In 1888, that lamp was replaced with a mineral oil (kerosene) lamp. To produce Pigeon Point's assigned characteristic of one white flash of light every ten seconds, the one (1) ton lens rotated one time every four minutes. When observed from a distance, this resulted in the appearance of one white flash of light every ten seconds. The lens rotation was originally powered by a clockworks and 45 pounds (20 kg) weight. In 1926 the lighthouse was provided with electricity. Modern innovations were incorporated and the kerosene IOV lamp was replaced by a 1000 watt bulb, the clockworks by an electric motor and an electrically operated fog signal was eventually installed. The lighthouse has been designated California Historical Landmark number 930. In 1972, the United States Coast Guard mounted a 24-inch (610 mm) aerobeacon on the front of the tower (now replaced by a smaller beacon) and officially retired the Fresnel lens from regular duty. The First order Fresnel lens is no longer lit to celebrate special occasions, such as the annual lighting of the lens, which usually occurred in mid-November (closest Saturday to November 15) the date of the original first lighting in 1872. The lens was removed from the top of the tower in November 2011, to now be displayed in the fog signal building, adjacent to the base of the lighthouse. The light outside the lens room, mounted on a small verandah at the top of the 100-foot (30 m) tower, rotating with six beams, is still an active aid to navigation. Updated information, garnered from the recent lens removal crew, has produced new numbers for the weight of the lens...long reported to be four tons. In actuality that figure was the complete shipping weight of the lens and its rotating clock works. The correct figures are as follows: lens weight, one (1) ton; the clock works, one (1) ton; and the seventy-eight (78) wooden shipping crates to contain such, two (2) tons; total, therefore, being the reported four tons.

The first order fresnel lens of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse originally came from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which has the same lens characteristic. Following the deactivation of the original tower in 1870, the lens, which had only been installed in 1863 was removed and put into storage. Shortly thereafter in 1871 it was shipped to the west coast to be installed in the new lighthouse.

The tower has been closed to tours since December 2001 because of the collapse of brickwork supporting outside access metal walkways on the top of the structure. Cast iron was used rather than steel with the unfortunate result being that cast iron absorbs water rather than repelling it like steel, thus the walkways are severely rusted, as are the major binding ring bands at the base of the tower! The California State Park system has promised repairs, but it is estimated that even if funds were available, it would be seven to ten years before the repairs would be completed. In July, 2010, Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-Palo Alto) stated that of the $3.4 million she requested for her district through the Fiscal Year 2011 Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, $250,000 will be allocated to restore the upper portion of the lighthouse.

The restored lighthouse keepers' housing has, since the mid-1960s, also served as a youth hostel for travelers. The hostel is operated by HI USA, a non profit organization devoted to helping the young gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. The four three-bedroom houses north of the lighthouse have overnight lodging for groups and individual travelers of all ages. Each house has male or female bunk rooms, as well as private room options. Hostel guests from all over the world share kitchens and living spaces set up to facilitate intercultural exchange. An outdoor hot tub can be rented in the evenings.

Deciding to visit Cozumel is easy, choosing where to stay on this gorgeous island can be more of a challenge. In this post, I’ll share the best places to stay in Cozumel so you can enjoy the perfect dive, snorkel, or beach holiday.

We recently spent a week on Mexico’s popular tourist island and are already planning our return.

At 48 km (30 mi) long and 16 km (9.9 mi) wide, Cozumel is a manageable size and no matter where you stay, you’re an easy drive to all points of interest.

Where to stay in Cozumel Mexico depends on what activities you want to do, whether or not you’ll have transport, and the style of accommodation you’re after.

In this post, I’ll break down the main areas of the island, plus share some top accommodation options as well.

Let’s take a look at the best places to stay in Cozumel for all types of travellers.

Central (Centro)

This part of the island is home to the majority of the action. The capital city (and only city) of San Miguel is where you’ll find the main square, lots of shopping, numerous restaurants and bars, and many accommodation options.

This is where you should stay in Cozumel if you want to be within walking distance to everything — including the malecon, which is where you can walk and enjoy the sunset and lots of great beach bars.

For anyone who wants to be near the action, and within walking distance to everything, Centro is a great area to stay in Cozumel.

Where to Stay in Centro Cozumel

We stayed at Stingray Villa which is a 4 room boutique villa located just 3 blocks from the sea. All of the rooms face towards the shared pool and are elegantly designed with new furnishings and paintings on the walls.

We really enjoyed our stay at Stingray Villa (the pool was great)

Built in 2019, the new rooms offer a comfortable king-sized bed, tiled flooring, and a large bathroom with granite countertops.

All of the amenities you could need are available here, from a hairdryer and seating areas to blazing-fast wifi and drinking water. Plus, you’ll find a coffee machine with Mexican coffee grounds, and a small fridge (perfect for keeping beer cold!).

The friendly, knowledgeable owners Greg and Silvia are around to help with anything you need.

Other places to stay in Cozumel in the center include:

Caribo Cozumel: a high rated, budget option in central Cozumel. This property offers a common kitchen area and is located about a 12-minute walk to the malecon.

Casa Mexicana Cozumel: this midrange place is directly across the street from the malecon and offers a sea view and a pool. The downside is that it can be noisy here.

Southern Cozumel

When I say southern Cozumel, I mean the area south of Centro to Playa Palancar on the southwest coast.

In my opinion, this is where to stay in Cozumel for diving and snorkelling. But, it will come at a higher price tag than staying in Centro, and you will definitely need a vehicle to stay out here or hire a taxi to get around.

As you leave San Miguel city and head south of Centro, you’ll find fewer restaurants, bars, and small hotels. Instead, there are more resorts, beach clubs, and just a handful of restaurants.

There are also fewer people, and it’s less developed. So, it’s a tradeoff.

Many of the resorts and hotels here have their own private jetties, meaning that your dive boat can pick you up and whisk you away right from your doorstep — how cool is that?!

Most of the dive sites are located south of the center of the island. We went scuba diving with Scuba Tony and were able to get a pickup at the jetty at Money Bar.

Where to Stay in the South of Cozumel

We spent 2 nights at the Landmark Resort and while it’s an expensive place, we enjoyed our stay. Built in a Greco-Roman style, with granite flooring and luxurious decor, the sea view rooms here are incredible.

Due to the Dzul-Ha reef being just offshore, this is a great place to stay in Cozumel for diving and snorkelling.

Snorkel gear can be rented for $15 per day from the Money Bar (restaurant and beach club), and if you’re diving with Scuba Tony, they’ll pick you up right from the jetty.

The downside to staying here is that it’s much more costly than the center, and you’ll definitely need your own mode of transportation. Or, you’ll need to take a taxi to get to restaurants in town. Click here to learn more about the Landmark Resort.

Other places to stay in Cozumel on the west coast, south of Centro:

Occidental Cozumel: this all-inclusive resort is located quite far south, but pick-up is still available when diving! With 3 pools, a sea view, and a beach, this is a top choice when it comes to places to stay in Cozumel. Learn more here.

Northern Cozumel

This part of the island is a great place to stay if you’re interested in golfing, waterfront accommodations, and a quieter trip. Plus, some of the best restaurants are up in this area — Buccanos, La Monina and Hemingway.

However, if you’re a scuba diver, this isn’t the best area to stay in Cozumel due to the fact that you’ll be far from the Marine Park, and scuba boats won’t pick you up here.

Where to Stay in the North of Cozumel

Here in the northern hotel zone, you have the choice between apartments, well-known hotels such as the Westin, all-inclusives, and smaller boutique hotels as well.

The Westin offers a private beach area, an outdoor pool, free snorkelling equipment, and an onsite restaurant. You have the option to make this an all-inclusive stay if you wish.

Hotel B and its sister accommodation, Hotel B Unique, are great options as well. Unique is more adult-orientated with chic design and trendy style. Rooms are oceanview or jungle here.

Puerta del Mar is located farther north of Cozumel, but still within an easy drive of activities. This bed and breakfast has a private beach area and bicycles for rent. This is a great quiet option for accommodations on Cozumel.

5 Things To Do in Cozumel

We’ve written an entire post on the fun things to do in Cozumel, so make sure to check that out here. But, here’s a teaser of the top 5 activities you won’t want to miss.

Scuba diving and snorkelling: The Mesoamerican Reef is 1,126 kilometers (700 mi) long and spans 4 countries — Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Diving in Cozumel is some of the best in the world. Join a scuba trip with Scuba Tony and explore the underwater world.

Visit the Mayan Ruins: Located in the northern part of the island, you’ll find the San Gervasio archaeological site. The Mayan ruins here aren’t as grand as Chichen Itza, but they are most definitely worth a visit (hire a guide onsite to show you around and bring the place to life.)

Watch Sunset: On the west coast of the island, you can witness magical sunsets each evening. While on the east coast, you’ll be able to see some spectacular sunrises! Watch the sunset from any of the bars on the water, or on the malecon.

Visit Punta del Sur: This nature reserve is not to be missed. Located on the southern part of the island, it doesn’t matter where you stay in Cozumel, make sure to drive here, take a tour, or hop in a taxi. At the reserve, you’ll find mangroves, beaches, lagoons, crocodiles, a lighthouse, and more. It’s a nature lover’s dream spot.

Drive Around the Island: Ok, so you can’t actually circumnavigate the entire island. But, starting in Centro, you can drive south, and around the southern tip, before coming back up the island on the east coast. You will then cut inland and cross the island (taking the Transversal de Cozumel road) and head back to Centro. A road trip to the east coast is a must.

Answers to common questions about choosing an area to stay in Cozumel.

Where to stay in Cozumel for an all-inclusive?

All of the all-inclusives on Cozumel island are on the western side of the island, with the majority being south of San Miguel city. Check out the Occidental Cozumel or the Cozumel Palace.

Where to stay in Cozumel for diving?

It’s best to stay in central or southern Cozumel for diving.

The dive sites are mostly in the Marine Park and if you choose to stay south of Centro, you’ll most likely be able to get picked up at your hotel’s jetty for a day of diving. If not, you will need to drive to the dive center.

Where to stay in Cozumel for snorkelling?

For snorkelling, it’s also best to stay in the south of Cozumel, on the wind-protected leeward side of the island.

While the best snorkelling is done from a boat trip where you can really get to the healthy reefs, there are many places where you can snorkel offshore — Money Bar, Iberostar hotel, and Playa Palancar.

Where to stay in Cozumel on a budget?

To save some cash, you’ll want to stay in the center of Cozumel. There are numerous Airbnbs, guesthouses, and shared accommodations here.

The accommodations are more affordable in Centro, yet many of them offer great value for money — such as Stingray Villa where we stayed.

Where to stay in Cozumel for the weekend?

Depending on what kind of weekend you want to have on Cozumel, you have a couple of options. For a fun, party weekend, you’ll want to stay in the center where you can walk to all of the restaurants and bars.

For a quieter getaway, have a look at accommodations farther south out of the city, or north.

Where to stay in Cozumel near the airport?

If you’re staying anywhere in Centro, you’ll be close to the airport. Cozumel’s airport is located downtown which makes early morning flights a breeze. Find the airport on the map here. As an example, the drive from Stingray Villa in Centro to the airport is just 7 minutes.

How long should I stay in Cozumel?

As long as you can! Many people visit Cozumel for a weekend trip — either from mainland Mexico, or from the USA. There are direct flights from many major US cities, making this a popular getaway.

People also opt to do day trips from nearby places such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen. But, if you have the time, spending a week in Cozumel will allow you to really enjoy the island at a slower pace.

What is the best side of Cozumel to stay on?

The west coast is where you should stay on Cozumel. The east is undeveloped, making it a great place for an interesting road trip, and there are some nice spots for lunch as well. But, when it comes to choosing where to stay in Cozumel, the west coast is your best option.

Is Cozumel safe?

Cozumel is one of the safer destinations for travellers in Mexico. It’s a popular cruise ship port, crime rates are low, and they take numerous precautions against COVID-19 here.

The usual common sense applies in Cozumel — don’t go on beaches at night by yourself, keep an eye on your belongings, and avoid all drug use.

For scuba divers, make sure you’re comfortable in the water and do a refresher dive if needed. Cozumel is home to an international hospital that has a Hyperbaric Chamber. Always make sure you have proper travel insurance. As digital nomads, we use and recommend Safety Wing (they also cover COVID-19).

Keep in mind that the sun is intense here and sunstroke is a real thing! Wear a hat, long sleeves, and reef-safe sunscreen — especially when you’re on a boat.

Always do your own research before visiting and speak with the locals to get the latest “on the ground” information.

After nine years pining after the one Lorne house, architect Josh Crosbie made it his own in 2020.

The house was originally built in 1965, by the same family who eventually sold it to Josh. Its long, mid-century form sits elegantly in the landscape, perched directly above a small cliff on the Great Ocean Road.

‘This house was my favourite house along the whole Surf Coast for many years before I was lucky enough to purchase it… It had never changed hands previously,’ Josh says. ‘I’m extremely grateful and proud that my family are now the custodians of this beautiful home.’

Given Josh’s long-standing love of the home, he wasn’t interested in removing any original features – just making a few sensitive updates to better suit his family’s needs. Mainly, this meant increasing in-built storage, and enhancing outdoor recreation spaces.

The biggest change was the additional of a lower level, to increase space and storage, without disrupting the ocean-facing facade. ‘This repetitious and simple language across the front facade was one of my favourite aspects of the house when I first saw it 10 years ago,’ Josh says.

Meanwhile, a full restoration was undertaken indoors, including new windows, skylights, and painting throughout, thought many original features were preserved. Much of the previous owner’s furniture also remains in place, after Josh purchased a lot of it with the house!

‘Many aspects of this beautiful home to me are very sacred to its original character and integrity – therefore were off-limits for any improvements,’ Josh says. ‘These include the main glass facade that looks straight over the ocean; the original hardwood joinery throughout the house; the original floor tiles through the kitchen area; the sandstone retaining walls that line the swimming pool area and driveway; and the exposed rafters through the whole house that line up perfectly with the hardwood window frame mullions.’

When selling this home, the original owners recounted countless party stories from their 50 years in the home – a tradition Josh hopes to uphold alongside his sons Levi, Jude, and girlfriend Mish. ‘I enjoy entertaining also, so it’s very sweet that this home continues its legacy.’

Of course, one can’t talk about this home without addressing the STUNNING view of the ocean, which feels close enough to touch! ‘Certainly, my favourite aspect of the house is sitting inside watching the mood of the ocean and the sky changing regularly,’ says Josh.
