California Highway 1 Road Trip
Six weeks ago, Highway 1 fully reopened in Big Sur, following devastating mudslides in May 2017. After $54 million worth of repairs and the removal of millions of tons of earth, rocks, and debris, travelers can once again enjoy an uninterrupted drive along the gorgeous coastal highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
But it’s not just the views that make the trek one of the most famous road trips in the world. There’s also the food to contend with: Dotted along the winding route, you’ll find peppery smoked-fish tacos, juicy burgers smothered in eggs and melted cheese, and homemade doughnuts oozing with jelly.
Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down. Your eating adventure will continue from there—you’d better start hungry.
  Point Reyes
Side Street Kitchen
The specialty at this year-old, bright, modern diner is the crispy skinned rotisserie chicken, fragrant with herbs and served half or whole with an array of sauces, including curried yogurt, salsa verde, and chimichurri rojo. The other specialty: puffy, sugar-coated, fruit-filled apple fritters. 60 4th St., Point Reyes Station
The Boat Oyster Bar
Hog Island Oyster Co. is famed for the oysters it pulls out of the bay and supplies to top dining rooms around the country. A reservation-only café on the water features those world-class bivalves; the menu changes often, but it frequently includes Hog Island’s singular kumamotos. You can get a dozen raw for $36; even better are the barbecued ones, grilled and dripping with chipotle bourbon garlic butter. 20215 Shoreline Highway, Marshall
Half Moon Bay Area
  La Costanera
Peruvian food is having a moment in the U.S., and La Costanera, with its wall of windows overlooking the water from a second-floor dining room, has been recognized by Michelin’s Bib Gourmand. The menu has a mix of classics such as antichuchos (grilled skewers) with marinated beef heart and pork belly; empanadas; tender beer-braised lamb shank; and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin with onions, soy sauce, and a fried egg, if you want one). 8150 Cabrillo Highway, Montara
Dad’s Luncheonette
Chef Scott Clark used to cook at San Francisco’s Michelin-three-starred Saison. He’s transformed a red-painted train caboose into a cozy, wood-lined diner with a small menu of comfort food favorites. The $12 hamburger sandwich has melted cheese, a soft egg, and red onion pickles on grilled white bread; the mushroom version substitutes maitakes for the grass-fed beef. 225 Cabrillo Highway South, Half Moon Bay
Sam’s Chowder House
Seafood makes up almost the entire menu at Sam’s, including a “Captains Platter” of oysters, clams, shrimp, poke, and ceviche; an appetizer of grilled sardines; steamed clams (with the option of linguine); and lobster rolls, “naked” with butter or “dressed” with aioli. At night, the place highlights fresh catches such as Pacific swordfish and local halibut. The seats on the deck offer a panoramic ocean view. 4210 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay
Hop Dogma Brewing Co.
The rotating array of craft brews at this locally popular beer hall might include Pyro’s Prost chili beer (pilsner brewed with jalapeño); Every Third Inquiry, a Bourbon barrel-aged stout; and the flagship Alpha Dank IPA. Guests can order food from nearby Lamas, a Peruvian and Mexican restaurant, and the tacos, burritos, and arroz con pollo will be delivered to the taproom. 270 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay
Duarte’s Tavern
Dating back to 1894, when Frank Duarte bought the place for $12 in gold, this venerable restaurant specializes in a California version of Continental cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from shrimp cocktail to pork chops with fresh applesauce. The specialties are anything with artichokes, plus the cioppino, packed with clams, shrimp, cod and especially crab, which people drive down from San Francisco to eat. 202 Stage Rd.
Santa Cruz
The Picnic Basket
Set on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the picturesque luncheonette has an all-day menu with a powerful breakfast selection: golden-brown turnovers stuffed with seasonal fruit or Niman Ranch ham and cheese; an egg-potato-greens frittata sandwich on toast; and house-made jelly doughnuts. Later in the day, hot dogs and elbow macaroni and cheese turn up on the menu. The nearby Penny Ice Creamery, where everything is house-made under the same ownership, is equally popular. 125 Beach St.
Monterey Peninsula
The Meatery
A serious, whole-animal butcher shop with impressive cuts of meat on display, this white-tiled space also serves as a deli. Sandwiches range from a hefty Reuben to banh mi made with caramelized pork belly slices, pickled vegetables, a hit of cilantro, and kewpie mayo on a French roll. A highlight is the house corned beef with sauerkraut on rye. The hot food offerings change daily: On Sundays and Mondays, there’s buttermilk-fried chicken; on Thursdays, visitors line up for the baby back ribs. 1534 Fremont Blvd., Seaside
The Bench Restaurant
Set on the impossibly scenic Pebble Beach Golf Links 18th hole, the Bench has a crowd-pleasing menu that offers all kinds of pizza-styled flatbreads: with pepperoni; with ratatouille, fennel ricotta and heirloom tomatoes; and with bench bacon and grilled, pickled red onion. The 24-ounce short rib, the Smokey Joe, is smoked for 10 hours. Aside from the best views, the outdoor deck has fire-pit tables. 1700 17 Mile Dr., Pebble Beach
Aubergine at l’Auberge Carmel
Chef Justin Cogley operates one of the country’s best under-the-radar fine-dining restaurants. Set in a Relais & Châteaux property, the intimate dining room has a $175 tasting menu that combines local ingredients in unexpected ways: A Morro Bay oyster with caviar has a hit of sea water, and seared abalone is accompanied by romaine lettuce that’s been braised and sliced in thick rounds, with lobster-infused lettuce puree. Monte Verde at 7th Ave., Carmel
Big Sur
Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant
Amid the trees in the hills off the highway, this exceptional café produces terrific pizzas from the wood oven, with a charred, bready, chewy crust and such toppings as creamy greens, mushrooms and tangy taleggio, and red sauce meatballs. The place is first and foremost a bakery: The creamy lemon curd pie in a pistachio crust is addictive, as is any pastry in the display case. 47540 Highway 1
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn, renowned for its modernist, cliffside, treehouse rooms overlooking the ocean, has a new manager, Gary Obligacion, formerly of Chicago’s celebrated Alinea. The property’s Sierra Mar restaurant is home to one country’s largest wine collections, with 14,000-plus bottles. It complements an elegant four-course tasting menu from which the seared foie gras has a garnish of hazelnuts and king salmon is paired with smoked split peas and sweet apple. 47900 Highway 1
The Sur House at Ventana Big Sur
In 2017, Ventana went through a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renovated Sur House restaurant now has outdoor fireside seating and a bar menu with smoky spice-rubbed chicken wings and open-faced tuna melt accented with pickled fennel. The dinner menu has deceptively simple dishes, such as grilled pork loin on a bed of jalapeño-spiked grits. The wine cellar is also notable: some 10,000 bottles with a focus on the Central Coast. 48123 Highway 1
San Luis Obispo
Ruddell’s Smokehouse
There’s not much barbecue along Highway 1. The notable exception is Ruddell’s, where founder Jim Ruddell set up shop in 2001 in a small building with a few tables outside. The place smokes albacore and salmon with a brown sugar and kosher salt rub; chicken is slow-cooked over hickory. The smoked seafood and poultry are available as tacos in a big French-roll sandwich or salad—and by the pound. 101 D St., Cayucas
Cracked Crab
In the surfing town of Pismo Beach, the unpretentious Cracked Crab has a blazing neon sign and lines stretching out the door. The menu changes according to availability of seafood and features an ocean’s worth of crab: dungeness cocktail with lime and avocado; puck-size, pan-seared lump blue crab cakes; and New England-style lobster rolls stuffed with crab instead. The seafood buckets offer the opportunity to mix and match wild Gulf shrimp, Alaskan crab, clams, mussels, and lobster tails; they go for $61 for one person and $79 for two and come with all the mallets and scissors you’ll need to extract the shellfish. 751 Price St., Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Jalama Beach Store & Grill
In Lompoc, the epicenter of Santa Barbara winemaking, is this grill, set inside a store that’s set inside the county park. The specialty is the Jalama burger: It’s quintessential Cali-style, with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, special sauce, and a griddled bun. The burger has gotten so popular over its almost 40-year history that the name is trademarked. 9991 Jalama Rd., Lompoc
La Super-Rica Tacqueria
Famous for being name-checked by Julia Child, Super-Rica is a cheerful, white-and-turquoise stand with a large selection of options that feature stellar homemade tortillas. The tacos are filled with all kinds of grilled meats—chunks of spiced, brick-colored chorizo; adobado with tender strips of marinated pork. The Super-Rica Especial is made up cheese-stuffed green pasilla chiles that are roasted and draped over tortillas with marinated pork and more cheese, for $6. 622 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
At the end of a dock on the harbor, this photogenic counter started out selling local seafood almost 30 years ago. Customers can still buy fish from commercial fishermen here. (There’s also a robust online store with trays of uni and stone crab claws.) The chopped caesar comes with a choice of grilled, skewered shrimp or sweet scallops. There’s more local shrimp, coated with coconut and crispy fried, garnished with onion rings. Also highly recommended are the linguine studded with garlic-sauteed clams in the shell and the monumental, steamed two-pound crab, along with a selection of local wine and beer by the pitcher. 230 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara
The Los Angeles Area
Malibu Farm
What started as a pop-up dining room by Helene Henderson in 2013 is now a farmers market-driven restaurant and café on the Malibu Pier, with outposts in Miami and Hawaii. The all-day café at the end of the dock has a lightbulb-lit menu that boasts a pile-up of Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and whatever the seasonal berries are, as well as kale caesar and BLTs with lemon aioli brushed on whole wheat. Down the pier, a slightly more serious version of the restaurant offers a tofu, spinach, and tomato scramble on weekend mornings, and nachos, featuring blue corn chips laden with black beans, melty cheese, and drizzles of sour cream in the evenings. 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
Tallula’s
Chef Jeremy Fox, who heads up the nearby vegetable-focused Rustic Canyon, now puts a creative spin on the Mexi-Cali dining room. In a colorful space decorated with hanging plants, Fox uses exceptional local corn, served Mexican-style with smoky chipotle aioli, and accents black-cod tacos with malt tartar sauce in tender, house-made tortillas. A daily taco special is dreamed up by rotating cooks in the kitchen. The serious bar program features mezcal Manhattans on draft, as well as the obligatory margaritas. 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica
Father’s Office
Chef Sang Yoon began serving one of the—if not the—country’s first gourmet burgers almost 20 years ago. The Office Burger is made from freshly ground, dry-aged beef, so it’s got a deep, meaty flavor that’s further accentuated by sweet caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, and blue cheese. Accompanying fries, standard or sweet potato, are presented in a mini-shopping cart. Father’s Office is equally known for pouring dozens of local craft beers. 1018 Montana Ave., Santa Monica

Northwest heat wave builds, all-time records fall (AP) Oregon’s largest city broke its all-time heat record on Saturday. It could beat the new mark on Sunday. Forecasters say many Pacific Northwest communities may sweat through the hottest days in their histories as temperatures soar during a heat wave that has sent residents scrambling for relief. Stores sold out of portable air conditioners and fans, hospitals canceled outdoor vaccination clinics, cities opened cooling centers, baseball teams canceled or moved up weekend games, and utilities braced for possible power outages. Portland, Oregon, reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 degrees Celsius) Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The previous heat record for Oregon’s largest city was 107 F (41.7 C), a mark hit in 1965 and 1981. Seattle reached 101 F (38.3 C) Saturday, making it the hottest June day on record and only the fourth time in recorded history the usually temperate city had topped 100 degrees.
Rattlesnakes everywhere: the odd consequences of California’s drought (The Guardian) Len Ramirez stalked through the dried landscape, scanning the ground ahead searching for movement. Called out to an estate in Napa Valley, the owner of Ramirez Rattlesnake Removal company was finishing up his last job of another busy day wrangling, removing and relocating snakes from homes across northern California. He’d found three in just this yard, including one nestled roughly 1,000 yards from the pool. Rattlesnakes are everywhere these days, he says—on front porches, in potted plants, and under children’s play equipment. Ramirez believes the drought may be partly to blame. Snakes are increasingly finding their way into urban environments in search of refuge from the rising temperatures and relief from the drying landscape. And it’s not just snakes. “Bears are showing up in areas where they’ve never seen before,” Rebecca Barboza, a wildlife biologist who studies the trend for the California department of fish and wildlife, told ABC News this month. Smaller animals and insects are also coming closer in search of water. Less perilous pests may also pose more problems during drought conditions. Ants, cockroaches and rodents and other visitors also need water to survive and human homes are typically where they go to find it when it’s absent in outdoor environments.
1st post-pandemic cruise ship from US sails away (AP) The first cruise ship to leave a U.S. port since the coronavirus pandemic brought the industry to a 15-month standstill sailed away on Saturday with nearly all vaccinated passengers on board. Celebrity Edge departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at 6 p.m. with the number of passengers limited to about 40% capacity, and with nearly all 1,100 passengers vaccinated against COVID-19. Celebrity Cruises, one of Royal Caribbean Cruise’s brands, says 99% of the passengers are vaccinated. Saturday’s sailing kicks off the cruise lines’ return to business with Carnival vessels already scheduled to depart from other ports next month. Industry officials are hoping all goes smooth to move past a chapter last year of deadly outbreaks on cruise ships that prompted ships to be rejected at ports and passengers to be forced into quarantine. Some passengers died of COVID-19 at sea while others fell so ill they had to be carried out of the vessels on stretchers.
Drug Gang Shootout Leaves 18 Dead In Mexico (AFP) A shootout between suspected drug cartels left 18 people dead Friday in Mexico, a government official said. The gunfight happened in a remote area of Zacatecas state in the country’s north, said Rocio Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the state government. Drug-related violence has claimed more than 300,000 lives in Mexico since 2006, when the government started deploying federal troops to fight the cartels. “There were 18 dead, and the confrontation occurred in the community of San Juan Capistrano, in the municipality of Valparaiso,” Aguilar added. Valparaiso borders Jalisco state, a stronghold of a powerful cartel called Jalisco Nueva Generacion.
Latin America Confronts a Pandemic Education Crisis (NYT) SOACHA, Colombia—Already, two of Gloria Vásquez’s children had dropped out of school during the pandemic, including her 8-year-old, Ximena, who had fallen so far behind that she struggled with the most basic arithmetic. “One plus one?” Ms. Vásquez quizzed her daughter one afternoon. “Four?” the little girl guessed helplessly. Deep into the second year of the pandemic, Latin America is facing an education crisis. It has suffered the longest school shutdowns of any region in the world, according to UNICEF, nearly 16 months in some areas. While many students in wealthy countries have returned to the classroom, 100 million children in Latin America are still in full or partial distance learning. The consequences are alarming, officials and education experts say: With economies in the region pummeled by the pandemic and connections to the classroom so badly frayed, children in primary and secondary school are dropping out in large numbers, sometimes to work wherever they can. Millions of children in Latin America may have already left the school system, the World Bank estimates. In Mexico, 1.8 million children and young people abandoned their educations this school year because of the pandemic or economic hardship, according to the national statistics agency.
Bangkok, 9 provinces restrict movements to curb rising cases (AP) Faced with a sharp rise in coronavirus cases, the Thai capital on Sunday announced a ban on indoor dining and gatherings of more than 20 people, in addition to the closure of construction sites and the sealing off of workers’ quarters in Bangkok and nine other provinces. The measures will remain for 30 days. The situation has become critical as the number of hospital beds in Bangkok for seriously ill COVID-19 patients is running short despite the creation of several field hospitals. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Friday that a proposal for a seven-day curfew for all of Bangkok has been rejected for the time being.
Singapore’s new plan to ‘live with covid’ revealed (news.com.au) A country that has been one of the world’s most successful at combating Covid-19 has announced it will soon fundamentally change how it manages the pandemic. The city state of Singapore has stated covid will be treated like other endemic diseases such as flu. There will be no goals of zero transmission. Quarantine will be dumped for travellers and close contact of cases will not have to isolate. It also plans to no longer announce daily case numbers. But you may need to take tests to head to the shops or go to work. Senior Singaporean ministers have said it is the “new normal” of “living with covid”. “The bad news is that Covid-19 may never go away. The good news is that it is possible to live normally with it in our midst,” wrote Singapore’s trade Minister Gan Kim Yong, finance minister Lawrence Wong and health minister Ong Ye Kung said in an editorial in the Straits Times this week.
Riots in Lebanon over economy injure 10 soldiers, protesters (AP) Lebanese troops deployed in the northern city of Tripoli early Sunday taking positions around major state institutions after a night of protests and riots against worsening living conditions left several protesters and 10 soldiers injured. Sporadic protests were reported throughout Lebanon on Saturday as the country’s 20-month economic crisis worsened. The World Bank described the crisis as one of the worst the world has witnessed in 150 years. It is coupled with a political deadlock that has left Lebanon without a government since August. Lebanon has been suffering severe shortages of vital products including fuel, medicine and medical products, angering the public.
Blinken, Lapid meet in Rome amid reset US-Israel relations (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will meet in Rome on Sunday as their new governments look to turn the page on former President Donald Trump and former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose close alliance aggravated partisan divisions within both countries. Now, with Trump sidelined in Florida and Netanyahu leading the opposition, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett are focused on pragmatic diplomacy rather than dramatic initiatives that risk fomenting opposition at home or distracting from other priorities. That approach—of managing the conflict rather than trying to solve it—may succeed in papering over domestic divisions. But it also maintains a status quo that the Palestinians find increasingly oppressive and hopeless, and which has fueled countless cycles of unrest. Officials expect there will be little settlement expansion beyond so-called “natural growth.” But that’s a vaguely defined term that could allow for considerable construction, as well as moving ahead with major infrastructure projects that pave the way for explosive future growth.
Ethiopia airstrike survivors recall massacre (AP) Maerg was serving customers at his cafe in Ethiopia’s Tigray village of Togoga when the military airstrike occurred, filling the room with dust and bringing down debris that struck him on the head. “Everything was covered in black smoke, it was like a hell,” he told The Associated Press by phone, recounting one of the deadliest attacks in the Tigray conflict. “There was so much blood.” Seven people were killed in his cafe alone, and some 30 were wounded, including his sister-in-law, who suffered burns on her face, hands and legs. Outside, he said, he saw dozens more bodies. As time passed, he watched in horror as survivors realized that Ethiopian soldiers were blocking medical aid from arriving. Such witness accounts are emerging after Ethiopia’s military has said it was responsible for the airstrike that struck Togoga’s busy marketplace on Tuesday, which health officials said killed at least 64 people and injured dozens more. Many died when soldiers blocked medical teams from reaching them, or from taking them to hospitals in the regional capital, Mekele, just 60 kilometers (37 miles) away, health workers said. Most of the victims were women and children, said a doctor who treated people at the scene.
South Africa resumes restrictions to fight surge (AP) South Africa has reintroduced tough restrictions including a ban on alcohol sales and an extended nightly curfew as it fights a fast-increasing surge of COVID-19 cases. President Cyril Ramaphosa says the delta variant that was first discovered in India appears to be driving South Africa’s new increase.

Rick Rowell/Walt Disney Television/Getty
Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert, stars of “Bachelor in Paradise,” are selling their blissful home in San Juan Capistrano, CA, for $3 million.
The couple, who met on the reality spinoff series in 2015, married in 2016, and have seen their family expand over the years. They welcomed a third child in November, and may also need to expand their living quarters.
The home was purchased in 2018 for $1.61 million, and its markup may speak to the custom touches that the couple have added to the cool contemporary build from 2017. The master closet is so spacious, Jade reportedly gave birth there to their son Brooks.

The couple opened their home to People magazine in 2019, and revealed that they had worked with the decorators Caitlin Wright and Hannah Rodriguez of Realm Design Co. to bring a “’cool, earthy California’” look to the Orange County abode.
Their stylish choices are apparent in the home’s listing photos, and it quickly grabbed the attention of a buyer. After just days on the market, the home is already in contingent sale status.
The couple have shared social media snaps of their family enjoying the open, airy space.

Private and gated, the five-bedroom estate opens to fountains that flank the front doors. The 4,408-square-foot floor plan features a center interior courtyard with a fountain and loggia, which brings natural light into the interior spaces and blends indoor and outdoor living.
A sunny great room boasts vaulted ceilings with distressed wood beams, wide-plank French oak floors, and six sets of doors to the outdoor entertaining areas.
An adjoining gourmet kitchen features a large center island and breakfast bar, quartz countertops, and stainless Thermador appliances.
There’s also a guest suite and a powder room on the main floor.
Upstairs, the master suite has a deck and sitting area, as well as an opulent bathroom with soaking tub, walk-in shower, and the famed walk-in closet that has doubled as a delivery room. The upper level comes with three more bedrooms with walk-in closets and en suite bathrooms.
Other elements of the home include the highly designed office with its squiggle-print wallpaper and mod light fixture, a laundry room, and a three-car garage.
Set on a quarter of an acre, the outdoor oasis expands the living space outside, and comes with a fire pit, cabana with outdoor kitchen, barbecue, refrigerator, TV, sound system, and retractable overhead awning. The professionally landscaped space offers mature olive trees, low-maintenance artificial turf, and outdoor lighting. The spread also sports a saltwater pool and spa.
Located within the gated community of Oak Farms, the luxury home is one of 32 residences among coastal oaks, grassy fields, and an equestrian center.
The couple met as castmates on Season 2 of “Bachelor in Paradise,” the summer spinoff of “The Bachelor,” and quickly fell in love. A whirlwind televised courtship continued into real life, and they married in 2016.
Jade co-hosts the podcast “Mommies Tell All” with her fellow “Bachelor” alum Carly Waddell. Last year, she made headlines when she scored first place with the DraftKings Millionaire Maker event, banking $1 million that was later revoked, on the grounds that she had cheated. Tanner’s day job is selling cars.
Dean Lueck with Compass holds the listing.

Orange County, California, has miles of coast along the Pacific Ocean and lots of sunshine year-round.
There are many things to do for families, couples, and groups of friends. Affectionately referred to as the “OC,” this county was made famous by reality TV stars and the film industry. But this isn’t just a place for the rich and famous. There’s a little something for everyone in the OC, and here are our top 10 picks for things to do here.
[toc]
1. Disneyland Park, Anaheim
Whether you’re traveling with kids or not, a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim is a magical experience that you’ll never forget. Disneyland opened in 1955 and has been an international tourist destination since then.
The eight themed lands are Main Street, U.S.A., Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Mickey’s Toontown, Frontierland, Critter Country, New Orleans Square, and Adventureland. Here you can meet some of your favorite characters, ride roller coasters, and enjoy some delicious meals.
There are several great dining and hotel options here for travelers of all budgets. You can also visit Downtown Disney, which has Disney-themed shops and entertainment to keep the magic going.
2. Take a Surfing Lesson
Orange County has become synonymous with web surfing, so why not catch a wave while you visit this area? One of the best places to go surfing in Huntington Beach, which is actually known as Surf City, USA.
Lots of surfing events take place here, and there’s even the International Surfing Museum you can visit. Lots of other great surfing opportunities exist at San Clemente, which is home to numerous surf shops and international surfing competitions.
Surfing lessons are offered by local companies, including Banzai Surf School, the Orange County Surf School, and Aqua Surf School.
3. Balboa Island Ferry, Newport Beach
While in Newport Beach, you can hop on a ferry from the Balboa Peninsula to Balboa Island. If you’re a fan of the TV show, Arrested Development, then you’ll really enjoy visiting this island where the show took place.
This ferry has been transporting drivers in vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists since 1919. But this isn’t just a way to get from one place to another. It is a scenic trip with lots of historic charm.
The ferry’s hours of operation are from 6:30 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, the hours of operation are from 6:30 a.m. until 2:00 a.m.
4. Heisler Park, Laguna Beach
This is a lush waterfront park in the town of Laguna Beach that offers amazing views and perfect photo ops. You can go to the beach here and take some iconic photos of the cliffs and the coast.
The park has walking trails, a marine refuge, gardens, tide pools, picnic tables, and lawn bowling greens. You may even see a happy couple tying the knot because this is a popular place for weddings.
5. Knott’s Berry Farm, Buena Park
Knott’s Berry Farm may sound like an orchard where you can pick fruit, but it’s actually much more than that. This family farm has transformed itself into a large theme park that offers lots of unique experiences for travelers.
You can take the exciting roller coaster, attend entertainment programs and even stay overnight at the farm hotel. To cool off on a hot day, you can splash around at Knott’s Soak City water park too. For entertainment, live bands, musicals, and comedy performers take the stage. The outdoor Wagon Camp Theater also hosts a fun Western stunt show.
6. Hike at Crystal Cove State Park
To enjoy the natural beauty of Orange County, you definitely have to visit Crystal Cove, State Park. This park spans about 3 miles of beaches and nearly 2,500 acres of land, and it has easy, moderate, and strenuous hiking trails to explore.
You can also cycle and ride horses in the park, which has both coastal terrain and forests. There are about 46 rustic vintage houses along the coast built as part of the seaside colony in the 1930s and 1940s. You can enter the park at Pelican Point and Reef Point along the bluffs and also more inland at Los Trancos and School/State Park.
7. Shop at South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa
Shopping is a way of life in Orange County, so join the fun at South Coast Plaza. This upscale shopping mall is close to lots of the area’s beaches and resorts, and it’ll make you feel as glamorous as the celebrities who call the OC home.
There are more than 250 stores and 30 restaurants here, attracting millions of people each year. Come see all the noisy at about 3333 Bristol Street in Costa Mesa.

Summer is almost here, which means warmer weather, longer days and the season of BBQs, pool parties and dining al fresco. If you’re a recovering alcoholic, it can also mean the added stress of sweating out social events where frosty margaritas, colorful pitchers of sangria, tubs of ice-cold beer and other alcoholic beverages are center stage. “For an alcoholic, life is a temptation to drink,”. “But the summer setting may bring on more of a temptation than winter, simply because there are more outdoor parties in the heat, begging for a cool drink.” But there may be a way to navigate this tempting season. Quoting the article: Mocktail drinks can, for some, be a slippery slope into using again. “For some people, continuing to act as though you’re having a drink can lead to the eventual addition of a ‘little’ alcohol and then more, leading to relapse,” Thoughts on giving up the using life style/culture? Quoting the article Whether it’s the clink of ice cubes, the weight or shape of the glass or the look and smell of a beverage, “any cues associated with your favorite drink are going to elicit all kinds of changes in the brain that initially mimic the changes that elicit cravings in the first place,” Your thoughts on knowing your triggers? Quote: research has shown that sugar can become as addictive as cocaine or morphine, she adds, noting a PLOS One study. “This is especially true of alcoholics and people who are addicted to stimulants,” Thoughts? What do you drink for fun? What are your recipes? Most unusual? What do you avoid? Boulders in the Basement?! Utah Residence on the Rocks Is the Week’s Most Popular Home
When you’re stuck at home, it makes sense to search out fresh digs with a bit of room to maneuver. This week’s list of the most popular homes on realtor.com® is filled with acres of land and square footage to spare.
But out of all the spacious retreats in the land, one on a quarter-acre lot topped our list: a funky midcentury house in Utah with several huge boulders occupying space in the basement.
We have theories. Perhaps the boulders were too big to move, so the architect decided to live with them? More likely, it’s an ode to organic architecture and the ethos of Frank Lloyd Wright. The aesthetic championed by the architectural giant involved structures built to seamlessly blend into the surrounding natural world. Such as a rocky outcropping incorporated inside a home.
Either way, whoever snags this fixer-upper will have to learn to love the stony segment of this vintage residence.

Climbing down off the rocks, you also clicked on several gorgeous properties with room to socially isolate in style. An architecturally significant hilltop estate in California offers acreage and both ocean and mountain views. An Oklahoma modern farmhouse on 10 acres makes farm life look stylish. And then there’s a jaw-dropping, low-country home in South Carolina with several entertaining spaces to share the spectacular surroundings.
While we continue to ponder boulders in the basement, we invite you to scroll on down for a full look at this week’s most popular homes.
