He had a joint in the corner of his mouth, smoke pouring from his nostrils. There were six of them: Ohro, Kinsa, Vax, Nima, Lanas and Kelles, all unruly and unsticking their coats and shirts, hopping out of their pants one leg at the time. Soon they were all naked, dicks and muscles and sinew and sweat, and they invited themselves into their bath while conversation was like bramble, loud and pricky and completely impossible to untangle. Lanas had hobbled over to the coals while removing his tight leather pants and was in the process of adding more steam, fogging up the entire bath, and the others in the bath groaned with approval. The water splashed over the edges of the gray and red tiles as the last of them, Ohro, lowered himself without any grace what so ever. They spread out, and the healer was guided by posessive hands into Leith’s open lap, where she sat, his arms loose around her, hooked on one shoulder, and the waist another. She settled in, his voice at her ear, his breath tickling her wet neck.

leander, pagan symbolism, and other notes.

ok so people have already brought up that leander is covered in or surrounded by a lot of symbolism. but there’s way more where that came from. idk if someone has compiled all of them in one place but i’m doing it here bc i’m feeling crazy at the moment

first, let’s get the obvious ones out of the way

there’s the ouroboros on his earring and in his charm

it’s a pagan symbol and also symbolizes alchemy. the ouroboros features a serpent eating its own tail and “symbolizes the eternal nature of the universe and the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The symbol is closely associated with that of infinity, and the two are typically combined” (source)

we can see that it’s combined with the infinity symbol on the charm, which of course has to do with eternity

then there’s the triple moon/triple goddess on his belt buckle, yet another pagan symbol (credit to this post for this insight!)

here’s some info on the triple moon: “The first crescent, the waxing moon, symbolizes new life, rejuvenation, and new beginnings. The middle circle represents the full moon when magic is at its most powerful. Finally, the second crescent moon represents the moon during its waning period. This time of the moon phase is a time that is regarded as the best to send things away, remove them from your life, or finish things.” (source)

there are also white lilies featured in leander’s CG, on his charm and pin, and in the game trailer

surprise! it’s also a pagan symbol!

supposedly, “pagans used white lilies as decorations on May Day. Part of the festivities include young women dancing around the May Pole with ribbons with lilies in their hair. In this setting lilies represent renewed life, health and fertility.” (source)

but wait, there’s more!

like the earth symbol on the chain attached to his lapel pin

another pagan symbol that “is also sometimes used to symbolize Mother Earth. The element of earth is associated with the colors of brown and green, abundance, prosperity, and fertility.” (source) apparently it’s the ultimate symbol of the divine feminine

finally, green is practically leander’s official colour. it’s the colour of his eyes, his magic, and is featured heavily all over his sprite and official art. interestingly, it’s also the colour of the cloaks that his bloodhounds wear

you guessed it - the colour green is tied to paganism

it symbolizes “youth and fertility, evil and envy” and is connected to the season of spring as well as to nature (source). in the bible, green “means immortality, resurrection, growth, prosperity, and restoration” as well as fertility (source)

now onto some things that i might just be reading into lmao

like the gold points on leander’s trench coat, as well as the tiny inverted triangle between his clavicles, which is also featured in one of initial sketches for his earring. this could be the water symbol

again, it’s pagan. and is “believed to have a strong feminine connection, and so it is associated with all aspects of the goddess. The inverted triangle used to symbolize water is felt by some to symbolize the womb and is befitting with this element's feminine association.” (source)

the same source mentions that water is a “healing and purifying element that is connected to the West. Water can be used in rituals involving love and other emotions, and flowing water in nature, such as a river, or the sea, can be incorporated into magical workings that focus on carrying away negativity or other unwanted aspects of your life.”

i included it because it mentions the goddess, the womb (so possibly fertility), and femininity, which you’ve probably noticed by now is a recurring meaning for the other symbols on him

flowing water also brings lowtown to mind, since it’s described as being eroded by some sort of flood

next i’ll bring up leander’s dagger earring again, focusing not on the ouroboros but the dagger itself

in the demo, the mc notes that the earring is “dagger shaped.” but what if it’s not a dagger at all? what if it’s the ankh?

this could be a stretch, but note the hoop at the top of the dagger

the ankh is an “ancient Egyptian hieroglyph means life or living. Over time the ankh has come to symbolize eternal life and immortality to people from many walks of life. In ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the gods were always seen carrying an ankh, making it a symbol of divinity.” (source)

another reach, but i was looking at pagan symbols that might be a match for the diamond that shows up on leander’s lapel pin and his belt buckle, and came across the unicursal hexagram

this is the weakest link imo, especially because this isn’t a pagan symbol, but i thought i’d add it anyway since it seemed neat

the unicursal hexagram is a “six-pointed star is drawn unicursally, meaning that it is drawn in one continuous line. The hexagram represents the divine and heavenly forces of the universe. In Aleister Crowley's occult order Thelema, a five-petaled flower is placed in the middle to represent the pentacle and the five classical elements.” (source)

some other insights that i wanted to bring up here, though they have less to do with symbolism and are more concrete/tied to the game specifically

first up, as mentioned earlier, green might as well be leander’s official colour... so what about the red items on him? what significance do they have?

there’s this glowing red object attached to his belt, which i can’t help but think looks like an inverted version of the largest spire in eridia. you know, the spire that’s confirmed to be the senobium

also note how the windows in eridia all seem to glow with a similar red light in this CG...

there’s also a (faintly glowing?) red gem on his dagger earring, which looks to be diamond-shaped

what does it mean? what does it all mean?

your guess is as good as mine! but given all the allusions to the divine feminine, the (triple) goddess, fertility, etc. i can’t help think that leander might be in league with some kind of goddess or female deity. we already know that gods exist in some form or another, since ais is connected to a god and kuras is an angel, so the idea isn’t completely off base

did this goddess save leander’s life in the past, hence the constant motifs of renewed life, rebirth/resurrection, immortality, and so forth? maybe the scar that covers a good portion of his body had been enough to kill leander, or just nearly, until she intervened somehow

is he working with her to potentially overthrow the senobium, which we know he dislikes? are leander’s bloodhounds in on this? is the fact that leander’s magic is so powerful due to some kind of pact he has with the goddess?

obviously, i have no clue. i’m just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks msfjskfjhfd

I hope I’m not reading into this too much, but the way that the Touchstarved logo (with the characters) on the Red Springs Studios website and in the PV trailer is set up makes me think it’s not just an artistic choice. I know that the characters in the image have been rearranged in a different order for certain promotions, but I just want to talk about why I think the characters in the main logo are set up that way and what it could imply about Touchstarved’s routes.

As seen above, Ais is in the center with Leander on his right (our left) and Mhin on his left (our right). Behind him, there’s Kuras and Vere. Ais is obviously the poster boy for Touchstarved. He’s usually in the center for their promotional images and merchandise e.g. the game’s loading screen, the pins and the tote bag. The devs themselves have said that Ais was the first character they created and that they built the world of Eridia around him.

There’s lots of theories floating around about Leander’s design which features Ouroboros, his eye bags, motifs of life and death, his white lilies, and lots of other things. His belt in particular features a triple goddess symbol which represents stages of womanhood as the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. The Maiden is associated with beginnings– so things like (re)birth, youth, exploration, etc. The Mother is associated with, well, motherhood but also power and stability. The Crone is the opposite of the Maiden, being associated with death. I’m sure there’s already theories on his belt and this symbol, but I think personally Leander only represents one of them in the grand scheme of things.

I think Leander, Ais and Mhin respectively represent the Maiden, Mother and Crone. Despite Leander’s death motifs, I feel like him being the Maiden is fitting because of his personality and character design. His coat is green and so are his eyes and magical flowers. Green is the color of life. Though his flowers are typically used for funerals in some cultures, flowers themselves are full of life. He even comments that they don’t last long, but they’re beautiful nonetheless. As life is. Secondly, Leander’s personality is, perhaps, the liveliest among the cast. He’s always upbeat and smiling (or blushing) which is why I think he represents the Maiden. He’s what you’d think of when you think of youth. He’s partying, drinking, performing magic tricks, has a club/the Bloodhounds and he seems to be having fun all the time.

As for Ais, I feel like it's pretty understandable that he is the Mother. He’s marketed as powerful, violent and intimidating. He loves bar brawls and hates easy fights. Additionally, it’s implied that he used to be a leader or at least in a gang. Red is a predominant part of his character and design. The Seaspring is red. So are his horns, eyes and the accents on his clothes. Red is, well, a powerful color. It represents powerful, strong emotions like love and anger. And emotions are a big part of Ais’s character. They’re his fatal flaw!

And finally, Mhin is the Crone. I was actually debating whether they were the Maiden (and Leander would be the Crone) since they were fairly new to Eridia like MC… like a new beginning in a new city? I’m going on a tangent here, but I think it may be deliberate on the devs’ part. Leander and Mhin could possibly represent the Maiden and the Crone because life and death are intertwined.  Mhin has a celtic knot/triquetra on their cloak’s clasps. The triquetra is used to represent three things that are deeply connected e.g. the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In pagan traditions, it’s used to represent the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone… like the triple goddess symbol on Leander’s belt. Anyways back to Mhin, I think the Crone suits them the best. Their supposed monster form is either a crow or a raven. Black feathered birds are associated with bad omens. Moreover, crows and ravens are associated with death thanks to pop culture and media. Our first encounter with Mhin was when we were at death’s door. They also shroud themselves with a cloak, have white hair and are extremely pale when compared to the rest of the cast.

The way Leander, Ais and Mhin are set up in the logo makes me want to believe that they’re representing the triple goddess symbol and that at least story wise, they may be the most important routes. They’re placed at the front and all three characters have something to do with curses. Leander knows his way around curses. He might be cursed himself. His eye bags are pointed out by MC and he doesn’t seem to be that fond of sleep either. Ais technically doesn’t have a curse, but the last two lines of his character introduction are “He’s beginning to suspect that he may not be in control of his powers as he thought. Can you save each other, or will he drag you into the abyss with him?”... which sounds like a curse to me. And aside from Leander, is also the only one to know about MC’s curse. Then, for Mhin, they also have a curse of their own and have been seen sneaking around the Senobium… possibly for a cure of their own?

This isn’t to say that Vere and Kuras aren’t important and relevant characters. It may just be the typical thing with otome games where certain routes have more lore than others and it’s recommended to save them for last. It’s usually the poster boy’s route. In this case, Ais’s.

It was dark, wherever you were. Wherever those masked cultists had brought you.

Shadows hid the dilapidated surroundings, held back only by the truly impressive array of Bath and Body Work candles and the scarce moonlight shining in through the shattered roof. Still, it was barely enough to illuminate the room you were in, but you could tell what it was. Or at least, what it used to be: the remains of an old church chapel. A burned-out husk of its former saving glory, with broken statuettes of angels strewn across the floor and the disfigured images of saints left dangling on the soot-stained walls. What little stone that hadn’t been obscured by decades of ash and grime was completely covered in layers of fresh graffiti. Pentacles, upside down crosses, magic staves, someone’s brave attempt at an ouroboros encircling a moon. Whatever cult had taken you; they clearly hadn’t been at this very long.

You strained against the ropes binding your arms to the corners of the low altar, but they held. Your fingers were bruised raw from struggling to untie the knots, but every time you felt the loops give one of the cultists would march over and redo them with a sort of nervous efficiency. Eventually you’d given up, vowing to at least wait until they left. Even if you’d managed to escape, you didn’t fancy your odds against five other people. Especially when one of them was holding a knife.

It was a strange instrument, a scarlet blade jutting out from an obsidian-black hilt. There was a pommel at the end that looked as though something had been carved onto it. Though you were wary of the blade, it didn’t seem like they were planning on killing you with it. You’d heard something about a sacrifice, demonic affinity, and yadda yadda unlimited wealth, insane riches, convincing their ex to get back together, etc. etc.

So, these clowns, whoever they were, planned to leave you tied up in this gross place as a snack for some demon? Fuck that. As soon as these weirdoes were gone you planned on getting out no matter what, even if you had to chew your bindings off. That still didn’t stop the thrum of panic when the one with the knife ran its edge over your throat and added your blood to the strange symbol encircling the stone slab. Finally, they called out for something in clumsy Latin while the other four made low humming sounds that reminded you more of being in a yoga class than at the center of a diabolical summoning ritual.

Perhaps they didn’t want to stay and watch you get eaten (cowards. At least commit to the experience). Perhaps leaving you was part of the rules. Regardless, soon you were alone in the dark and about to resume your struggle when one of the candles in the corner flickered. You froze, heartbeat ratcheting up when the flame sputtered once, twice, and then died.

As though that was a signal, every single candle in the room began to die. One by one, a cascade of inky blackness and scented grey smoke invaded the temple. You stared up at the ceiling, trying to force yourself to stay calm, to breathe normally. There had to be a reasonable explanation for this. Maybe it was the wind-

You gave yourself a mental slap before the thought could complete itself. That was literally how people died in horror movies!  

“Ha, it worked!”

You shrieked at the strange voice, eyes promptly darting to the source whereupon another scream began to build up in your throat. Up in the rafters crouched a monstrous creature, all red skin and short horns that curled up into pronged tips. Black, bat-like wings stretched upwards, partly blocking the moon. A nasty snarling smirk curved across its thin mouth, revealing rows of sharp teeth and a line of drool dripping from the corner.

The creature jumped down, landing right at the side of the altar, salivating at your prone form while your mind struggled to make sense of this impossibility. You flinched away from the taloned hands, grimacing in disgust when the – demon? Demon – stuck out a slimy tongue and dragged it up the side of your face as though it were savoring you.

“Stupid little humans,” they cackled. “So ready and willing to believe anything from a creature they don’t even understand. If all it takes is a few empty promises, I’ll soon have legions of human servants willing to sell their souls to me–!”

“Ah, I wondered what was going on.”

Like a radio being switched off, the demon above you went silent. No, they literally froze in place. Terrified as you were, an irrepressibly curious part of you couldn’t help but crane your neck as far as the ropes would allow in order to peek behind them and see who was speaking.

They…looked normal. A tall, masculine frame draped in relatively casual clothing. Chestnut brown hair covered most of their face, fading into mahogany at the edges, and revealing only a pair of plump lips stretched in an easy and undoubtedly dangerous smirk. Aside from the black choker around their throat and the array of rings decorating their fingers, this person looked completely ordinary.

Yet, as soon as they spoke, the demon that had been menacing you just a scant second ago began to back away, nearly tripping over their own feet and wings to put distance between themselves and the lazily approaching figure. “L-Lord Zion! I only uh–! I was just…! Th-This was simply a test, you see!”

“Hm?” The person – the other demon? – cocked their head, the smile never leaving their face. Now that they were closer, you could see that the thing moving behind them was a tail. Spade-shaped and blood red as it flicked back and forth in lazy arcs. Those fingers, heavy with silver jewelry, were tipped with viciously sharp talons that they raised to tap their chin in a mockingly thoughtful manner. “Go on.”

“I-It was to see how easily humans could be manipulated!” The other demon stuttered, eyes darting around the room for some escape. When those eyes landed on you, your heart sank as you realized exactly what was going to happen a second before they spoke. “In fact, I was planning to give you this sacrifice! Consider it a token of my loyalty!”

The demon – Lord Zion they’d said – turned to you as though they had just noticed your presence in the room. Your eyes met through the gloom, and in spite of your fear you couldn’t help but think that their eyes were beautiful. Burning coals, molten flame encased behind amber, a heat that threatened to devour you whole. Those eyes widened through the haze of hair, and in a second the demon was looming over you with the toothiest smile you’d ever seen outside of a shark.

“Well, well, well,” they cooed, admiring you with the sort of fervent obsession one might give to a work of art. A hand brushed through your hair, across your temple, before cupping your cheek. “What have we here? Aren’t you precious, hm? Aw, did that mean demon frighten you, little human? There, there.”

The words and tone were condescending, but you weren’t exactly flush with options, and at least this demon didn’t seem inclined to eat you. You winced when their hold on you shifted, and their wrist brushed against the open would on your neck. Like clockwork, their eyes snapped to the line of blood sluggishly pooling in the hollow of your collar.

“Oh you poor thing,” the demon tipped your head to the side, the strength behind a single finger making it clear that you wouldn’t have been able to resist them even if you’d wanted to try. “Let me…”

A surprised whimper broke past your lips. A long tongue trailed its way up the side of your throat, lapping over your skin as though your blood were some delicious treat. Honey-sweet instead of the tang of bitter copper. Those lips latched onto your flesh, nuzzling and nipping while you thrashed and struggled to tamp down the unholy noises emanating from both of you. The sounds of sucking, saliva, lips smacking, you would have thought the demon was enjoying the finest of meals if not for your own high-pitched moans, wails, and pleas.

Finally the demon pulled himself back with a gasp, a feral grin carving his face in a truly infernal mien. “Oh. Oh, I am never letting go of you, Dove.”

“D-Does that mean I’m free to go?”

Your face erupted with heat. You’d forgotten that the other demon was still there. Judging by the irritated expression that crossed Lord Zion’s face, they’d forgotten as well.

They exhaled a long, loud sigh, and then snapped their fingers. In an instant, a bubbling mass of shadows rose beneath the demon’s feet. Slowly, exponentially, they began to sink into the murk like quicksand. “Let me see,” Lord Zion hummed thoughtfully. “You planned to overthrow me, attempted to manipulate humans in my name, and even used my symbol as part of the ritual? All while believing I would never learn of your weak attempts to usurp my throne? For your crimes, you ought to be tortured and slaughtered in front of my court.”

“M-My Lord, I was only–!”

“However,” Lord Zion cut them off, lips twisting in a sadistic smile. One that gained a hint of softness when they looked at you. A clawed finger played with a lock of your hair, twisting it gently before moving to undo your bindings. “Your one redeeming outcome is finding my human for me. So I shall be merciful in return. Pick one.”

“One?” The demon stammered, now only a head straining to stay afloat above the burbling gloom. “O-One what?”

“I said I was planning to kill and torture you, didn’t I?” Lord Zion said placidly, finishing with the ropes and hooking their arms beneath your exhausted body. You leaned against them, unable to even complain about being held bridal style. “So pick one. Think carefully though. Neither will be quick.”

SPOILER ALERT! This Q&A contains spoilers for Season 2 of Loki.

Season 2 of Marvel Studios’ Loki expands upon the inner workings of the Time Variance Authority, where the God of Mischief has been working tirelessly to save, well, all of time.

That includes introducing new characters, like Ke Huy Quan‘s Ouroboros. As the TVA’s dedicated handyman, everything inside the institution was either created by him or is currently maintained by him. When Loki and Mobius enter his workshop, they become his first visitors in 400 years.

Little do they know, Ouroboros is an integral part of their quest to prevent the branches of time from overloading the Temporal Loom.

Following the end of the actors strike and on the heels of the Loki Season 2 finale, Quan spoke with Deadline about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his character Ouroboros, and his own full circle career moment.

DEADLINE: It’s so great to get to talk with you about Loki. You haven’t really been able to talk about your role, due to the actors strike. What have you been waiting to say?

KE HUY QUAN: When I decided to become an actor again, [being part of the MCU] was at the top of my wishlist…They all welcomed me with wide open arms, and I was so happy. I was patiently waiting for the show to come out so we can go and celebrate it and tell the fans. Then, of course, the strike happened. I just want to tell everybody how proud of the show I am. How happy I am with it. And working with Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, the entire Loki family has just been incredible. We made this last year in London. I was there for four months, my wife and I were there. It was one of the best four months of my life. I’ve done a few shows before, and this was the first time where I didn’t want it to end. I was so happy. In fact, I’ll tell you this. We were scheduled for reshoots this February, and I was waiting. My wife and I were looking forward to spending more time in London and with our Loki family. And all of a sudden we were told, ‘Oh, we don’t need any reshoots. It’s all good.’ I was kind of disappointed. I was actually disappointed that we didn’t get to go back because of how much fun we had… So we made history. We make history two times. One is the first series of Marvel getting a second season and the second is the first time a Marvel show didn’t have any reshoots. I’m so proud of that.

DEADLINE: It is quite a feat to not have any reshoots. So that was probably one of the few times you were excited for reshoots.

QUAN: A lot of times actors dread doing reshoots, because you have to go back. You have to get back into character. But for this, I was really happy. I was looking forward to it. It’s so ironic, because the more I wanted to do, it’s like, ‘Oh, we don’t need it.’ But this is a testament to how great the show is and to how great a Leader Tom Hiddleston is. Working with him has been incredible. It was such a masterclass on how to be a great actor, a great leader, and most importantly, a great human being. He is so kind and humble.

DEADLINE: When you first read the script, what did you think of your character, Ouroboros? What were you hoping you could bring to him?

QUAN: Well, first of all, when I read the script, I instantly fell in love with Ouroboros. It was so well defined on the pages, and I can see him right away. This character was not based on comic books, so it was created by our showrunner Kevin Wright and our head writer Eric Martin… I instantly wanted to play him. And I remember this was at a time when Everything, Everywhere All At Once had just came out. It was paying only in New York and in Los Angeles. My agent said, ‘You’re gonna get a call from Kevin Feige tomorrow.’ Now you have to understand, when I became an actor again, joining the MCU was at the top of my wishlist. I was so excited and I said, ‘Could this be it?’ I was driving. I picked up the phone. And on the other end I hear, ‘Hi Ke. This is Kevin Feige.’ He went on to talk about how much he loved our movie and how much he loved my performance. Then finally he says, ‘Ke we would love for you to join the MCU family.’ I was driving at that time. I start tearing up, and I couldn’t see the road anymore. I said, ‘Kevin, can you give me two seconds?’ I pulled the car over, put it in park and I said, ‘Please continue.’ He says, ‘We have this great character for you, Ouroboros. I really love him, and I think you will be perfect to play him.’ He told me about Loki. He told me about the MCU. He spoke [with] so much passion and enthusiasm in his voice. It brought me back to the day when I met him for the very first time on the X-Men set when he was just an associate producer, and I was an assistant action choreographer…He loves this universe so much. He has such a vast knowledge of this universe. And little did I know only 23 years later, I get to work with him. I get to play a wonderful character.

DEADLINE: I’m glad you mentioned that. It is quite the full circle moment.

QUAN: You know, that’s why I love the name Ouroboros. It’s s a snake eating its own tail. I had a wonderful time working with Kevin on set. It was at a time where I didn’t think I would ever step in front of the camera again. It was also the time where I questioned whether I would have a career working behind the camera. It was when I just graduated from USC film school. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I knew I didn’t want to leave this industry. I love it so much. So to be able to do that and to come back again in front of the camera… I’m very fortunate.

DEADLINE: Your comedic timing is so spot on in Loki. I’m thinking of the scene where Ouroboros manages to recreate the Tempad after 19 months and losing his wife. What’s the secret to nailing a scene like that?

QUAN: I don’t think much about it. I gotta credit Kevin Wright and Eric Martin. They really beautifully created this character Ouroboros. The dialogue, when I was reading for the first time, I laughed out loud, because he’s so quirky. He’s so weird and funny. Yet, if you think about it, who is this guy that’s working in the basement of the TVA for more than 400 years with no friends? No interaction with anybody. His only encounter was with Mobius when he got lost. Yet he still takes his job so seriously and so passionately. It has a lot to do with the beautiful dialogue that they came up with.

DEADLINE: Do you think O.B. stays in the basement for another 400 years or will be venturing out more often?

QUAN: When you get a taste of what friendships feel like… Loki is addicted to that. So I’m sure O.B. will be as well. When you don’t have it, you don’t know what you’re missing. But once you have it, you keep going after it. So I would assume that O.B. would periodically, when he’s not too busy, he would go up the elevator and go say hi to Casey and B-15 And just to mingle with Mobius, because he loves Mobius.

DEADLINE: What scene are you most proud of?

QUAN: I love Episode One, that scene when he’s talking to Mobius in the present and Loki in the past. That is so creative… It’s so is so well written. It’s so funny.

DEADLINE: How did you feel when you read the script for the finale?

QUAN: I was blown away, because I didn’t see that coming. It’s so beautiful and so poetic. When you have a character who wants to be on the throne all his life, and he finally gets to be on it. But he can never leave. He made the ultimate sacrifice…To me, Loki is the ultimate hero because he made the sacrifice without recognition. Nobody knows he did this, except the team. No one in the Sacred Timeline is going to ever know that. If we’re lucky in life, we would have people like that with us. The unsung heroes.
