Izzy Hands leaning by the window in the galley, taking the weight off his bad leg, his head tipped back, eyes closed, not quite fully awake yet. He listens to the sound of the pot on the stove as the dawn sun starts to stream in through the windows, glinting off the hilt of his sword- He's not so put together this early, with nobody around to see him, almost soft in the way his sleeves hang loose & he hasn't yet put on his glove. On the table rests his personal logbook, waiting for him to plan out the tasks for the day, but that can wait until he's had his coffee.

When I watched OFMD this year, I literally knew three things:
It was called Our Flag Means Death
It was a pirate comedy
It had been cancelled
I didn’t know Rhys Darby (‘that Murray bloke from Conchords’) or Con O’Neill (‘the weird guy from Chernobyl’) were in it until they came on screen. And please don’t stab in me in the face, but I had never heard of Taika Waititi. I’m very much not the target market for this show. Although I will say I think it’s universal in its exploration of the human condition. So if you’re human, the show is for you.
I knew nothing about budget cuts, editing decisions, or even at this point any circumstances around why it had been cancelled. I had not an inkling it was a romance. I had no notion it was going to overtake my life to such an extent.
I watched one episode a night for 18 nights (I know, I know… I binge-watched it immediately afterwards over two days, and haven’t stopped since). I also had no-one to talk to about the show as I watched the 18 episodes. No-one I knew had ever heard of it. I really was a blank canvas.
And this is what I thought. Other than finding Calypso’s Birthday a little uncomfortable on first watch (and that’s largely because I find torture, even the OFMD variety, difficult to engage with - I always skip the opening of 206 now), I saw no difference between the seasons in terms of artistic merit. It’s possible that because I didn’t experience an 18-month hiatus, and build up my own version of what season 2 should be in my head, I didn’t have any expectations to be knocked down. I just engaged with what they asked me to watch.
I fell in love with this show at ‘My name’s Stede. I’ll be your robber here today.’ I fell in love with Stede Bonnet when he did his little Scrappy Doo air-punch in episode two.
With regard to season two, The Innkeeper affected me so much I honestly think it altered my brain at a structural level. More so than The Chain sequence which is when I think this show started affecting my brain chemistry.
I also loved the development of Stede and Ed outside of their personas. The couch scene in Fun and Games made me believe in them as a couple in ways I hadn’t quite in season one because they were growing and being real with each other. I thought their arguments were so well-written. Man on Fire has one of the most authentic representations of couple miscommunication I have ever seen on tv. And I think Mermen is really good in doing what it needed to do, and did it well. How do you end a tv series that gives a satisfactorily emotional ending, but doesn’t give away everything in case there’s another season?
Ed’s journey in particular just ripped my heart out and then glued it back together. And seeing Stede continue to develop his very nonlinear understanding of the power of his earnestness and gnc self, whilst still sometimes wrestling with notions of traditional masculinity… I needed to grow a second heart.
When I learned of the financial and time constraints later on, I was shocked they had achieved such a high standard of tv.
Imagine my shock when I discovered the Canyon…
It’s fine if you don’t like season 2, or season 1, or OFMD at all for that matter. But if you want me to say season 2 isn’t any good, or as good as season 1, then you want me to say something that I have never felt to be true. When you experience it holistically like I did, it all hangs together beautifully.

MISSION: LOVE KILL  ᡣ𐭩 [trailer]
pairings: Simon 'Ghost' Riley & fem!reader
synopsis: the trailer to my very first full-length series set in a soulmate AU.
pairings: (applies to future parts) angst, smut, fluff, mutual pining, misunderstandings, rivals to lovers to rivals, featuring Ghost's inability to communicate, graphic mentions of violence, might hint to sexual violence, BARELY PUT TOGETHER, torture, one bed trope, i-will-wait-for-you trope, loving-you-is-like-breathing trope, slowburn (unless I get bored and rush this), poor poor attempt in crack, will add more as we go on
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The subtle searing pain on the back of his neck is enough reason for Ghost to hate the idea of soulmates existing. It wasn’t just the fact that he has lived up to his 30s feeling like a fire wasp is buzzing under his skin, it was that the government fully developed their system with pairs in mind. You mean to tell him that he has to have found his partner—who’s probably cities or even continents away—just so that he could fucking own property? Utter fucking bullshit, he calls it.
‘Nutjobs! The lot of them’
It was also the fact he had to watch his mum’s so-called soulmate almost beat them up to death each day. How could someone whose single purpose in life is to torment them be his mother’s soulmate? Fate either has a weird take on the concept of love and the whole shenanigan or it’s fucking wicked. Either way, the S-word has left a bad taste in his mouth—and memory. He would rather die, not having property—or anything really—to his name if it means that he wouldn’t comply to the fucking standards of pairs.
Or so he thought because, once again, life is fucking wicked like that.
When he first broke the news that he would be retiring from the army, he expected his future days ahead full of smooth-sailing lounging. Maybe a cup of tea in hand or even some biscuits if he was feeling fancy. Imagine his shocked face when he inquired with a real-estate agent to finally have something to call home, no longer needing to stay by some cheap hotel with what his little pay could afford, that he cannot fucking do that!
“Yeah, this would be good. Really nice stuff here,” Ghost gruffs. “Yeah? Well, let’s get started then. Um, here are the paperworks that you need to fill out. Uhh, you just need to input your government code and your partner’s. It is policy that you bring your pair in with you when it comes to legal documents, but I’m sure that we could make an exception for our veteran here,” the agent smiles; one that Ghost did not reciprocate. “I ain’t got a missus with me. Haven’t found them yet.”
It was a simple explanation, not wanting to dwell too much on his reasons. Before he could even take the papers in his hand, the man retracts. Confusion etched on Ghost’s face while pity is on the man’s. “Oh, I am really sorry but you are legally required to have a partner before you could own property—or anything for that matter.” Ghost looked this agent for a good few minutes, anticipating the ‘sike’ that he desperately wishes to hear but only dead silence echoes. “Surely you could, say, make an except for a veteran?” he nervously chuckles out, trying to weasel his way into a fucking home. Nothing. Dead fucking silence that’s heavy with pity. Ghost loathes it.
Without even saying a word, he turns his back and starts walking towards the car he rented today, because you can’t even own a car in this government! He should have flagged it as weird when the lady in the car shop insists that he should rent first before buying something. So, now he sits in the dingy bar that Soap has dragged him into after he informed the force that he would not be settling anytime soon. After explaining his circumstance, he expected them to react like he did before, but no. They all replied like they knew this. Even saying stuff like, “you didn’t know?” Of course he didn’t! It wasn’t like Ghost was invested in property or anything for that matter while he was serving. All he cared about was surviving each day, and that is it.
“Aye, cheer up, lad. Life ain’ that bad. Ya’ just gotta get them lassie, and all yer problems would go away,” the Scot on his right drunkenly offers advice—a shit one at that. Did he really think Ghost hasn’t stepped foot on every land they got deployed with heavy hopes that he’ll find whoever he needs to find there? He fucking hates it here. He should have not retired this early if he knew this would happen. Now he needs to go around the world and search for the lassie whose presence—or her lack thereof—is the root of all his problems.
If finding a needle in a haystack is hard, imagine finding a lady that’s probably moving countries as he speaks with Soap. “Yeah, like that’s fucking easy,” he scoffs, rolling his eyes before lifting his mask just enough to down his shot of whiskey. The fiery burn of the alcohol down his throat is nothing compared to the one on his neck. He would rather have it cut at this point than to go on about this miserable lifetime any longer.
“Should I just cut and peel it off?” he mumbles to no one in particular; probably to Fate if that shit is listening. Seeing that no one else in the rundown bar is really paying attention to him, Soap takes the honour in replying to him instead. “According tae what I’ve seen, jobby pain is hee haw compared tae th' pain ye will feel in yer heart. Doctors say that th' pain goes tae th' heart instead while tripling”. Unprompted, Ghost curses like a fucking sailor. Saying stuff that will probably get him on the government's watchlist if he wasn’t part of the military serving this goddamn country. He risks his life daily and this is what he gets? Ungrateful bastards.
With a slam of the glass on the mahogany table, he stands up with a new profound determination. “Fuck it, I’m finding that missus if it’s the last thing that I do”. “Eyy, that’s the spirit, matie,” Soap drunkenly encourages him, which should have been the first red flag on this idea. Any idea supported by Soap is an immediate botch.
Well, what could go wrong? He’s retired anyway.
Turns out, many could go wrong. Well, here’s to the fucking shit-show of his life.

‘Our Flag Means Death’ Star Rhys Darby on Stede’s Transformations & Hopes for Season 3
Tumblr media
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episode 8 “Mermen.”]
Our Flag Means Death saw Gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) transform from a fish-out-of-water swashbuckler into the romantic hero he was always destined to be in the latest season of Max‘s original comedy.
After realizing the error of his ways at the end of Season 1, Stede sought redemption in the eyes of the infamous Blackbeard, a.k.a. Ed (Taika Waititi), after recognizing he was in love with the pirate. While the path wasn’t a direct one, they eventually found their way back to one another with the help of a fantastical mermaid sequence, some much-needed apologies, and ultimately a better string of communication.
Reflecting on his journey, star Rhys Darby is opening up about Stede’s various transformations in Season 2, including the excitement surrounding that mermaid tail, as well as about where he thinks the pirate lovebirds might end up next should the series return for Season 3.
Tumblr media
Congrats on Season 2! Now that we can finally talk about it, what has it been like getting to see fan reactions, especially during the SAG-AFTRA strike?
Rhys Darby: Yeah, it was like a pressure cooker that needed to burst, for us and for the fans. When it finally came out, the burst happened and there was so much love for us, [but we] couldn’t talk about it. We were still stuck in this bottle and the cork wouldn’t come off, and that was difficult, but it was really lovely to see all the love and the surprise from everyone. Obviously, as you know, the fan artwork, it’s what we would say in New Zealand is pretty full on. So yeah, it was super cool.
And not that anyone gives out numbers, but I think I heard on the ethos that people [are] watching it, and it’s rating really high and at a time when we need this kind of beautiful love fest of comedy with a whole bunch of silliness to take us away from the disasters that are happening in the world. It’s been lovely. I just wish it was longer. I know people watch and rewatch and they’re so fanatical, but it’s just a comedy show, so to have any effect means so much to us.
In Season 2, Stede’s gone through a few transformations, one of which is that he’s a real pirate now, at least comparatively to Season 1. What helped you get into that new version of him? Was it the writing, costumes, or a combination of the two?
Yeah, the costumes are the first thing that comes to mind because once he starts wearing different gear, he looks at himself and goes, “Oh my God, I’m a different man.” And he really is turning from a man who is wearing these beautiful gowns with high heels and things inappropriate for a pirate ship to becoming an Errol Flynn-type hero straight away. That’s what they wanted to do with the character. So he’s lost a lot of that beautiful pageantry and is becoming a more practical guy who has to survive. He returns to this nightmare of a world because he wants to fight for love, and for want of a better term, “man up,” whatever the modern-day version of that is, “person up?” To become the guy that he dreamt of being in the first season.
Tumblr media
He didn’t dream that he was going to fall in love with someone. He dreamt he was going to be this amazing pirate and that just was not going to happen. But then when he found this love, I think he went away from that [dream] going, “I don’t deserve this.” And then when he realized upon returning home that he does deserve it, he had to fight for it. And so the only way to fight for it was to drop the battle armor of the gowns and actually become the pirate he imagined being. So it was great to become that and to fight for that love and to thank god that [Blackbeard] didn’t die. He would’ve actually lost it, I think, because it would’ve been like, “Well, what am I fighting for now?”
I think it was just so fun to see that character change, but also within that change, see a bit of the old self come through, especially when he found that cursed red suit. And all of a sudden it was like, “Oh my God, the old me again, look how good I look!” So it was lovely that they had those elements… I was missing a little bit of the old Stede myself. So it was great to find that again. And then again near the end with the British invasion scenario where I got to do the big coat and everything, which of course looked awesome. You can see that moment where I put it on and did that slow turnaround. It was way more filmic shots of me wearing that kind of stuff. And I think that gave Stede's strength as well. So much of Stede's embodiment comes from the things he’s wearing.
Speaking of costumes, the big one of the season had to be Stede’s mermaid look. How did you wrap your head around getting ready for such a fantastical, and ultimately, beautiful scene?
That was the highlight of the whole season for me. As a kid, I used to swim around like a little merkid. I would put my legs together and I’d swim under the water. I’ve always been into mermaids and things because I’m into cryptozoology. So when I got to be a mermaid or a merman, I really took to it. It was pretty easy, to be honest with you. I didn’t have any training to swim like that. So the only training I did was some breath work beforehand to help me hold my breath longer. But that was kind of almost superfluous. Once I got that [tail] on, I just became a mermaid. It’s hard for me to describe how I suddenly become these things, but I think I just got under the water. I could swim really easily with it.
Tumblr media
And I had weights on. So one of the things was we had to make sure I was the right weight so that I wouldn’t just float. That thing was sort of buoyant. So once we sorted that out, I could actually swim really well, and then just sort of hover underneath the water for a long time while [Taika]’s looking at me, I’m looking at him. To see it on the day, on the screen when I knew they’d got [the shot], there were just so many cheers, and I think they even played the music to see how the scene would work out. It’s one of those life moments where you go, “Oh my God, I’m becoming a cryptid again. I’m never going to forget this.”
This season really does focus even more on Stede and Blackbeard’s romance. How did you and Taika prepare for that? Especially since Stede’s more transparent about his feelings this time around.
It was good, and it was time. And because I was the new strong Stede, it felt really natural for me. I think it just worked really well with the writing because of the aggression that I was going through. When I was fighting that really bad guy [Ned Low (Bronson Pinchot) and] threw a violin at him because he ruined Calypso’s birthday, that was a good moment because it is not just about Ed, it’s about the crew, Stede’s family, and they were going through this amazing moment there, and all of a sudden this guy turns up and next thing we’re getting tortured. And I’m like, “How dare you?”
I think that progression of strength helped [Stede] break into the moment of, “I’m just going to take my lover as well now, and do something with him.” He probably had no idea what he was doing because it’s Stede, but it worked out and it was the right time in the show. Taika and I are really good mates, so it’s really easy to do emotional scenes together. As soon as we put our gear on, we’re just looking at that character, and we admire each other.
Tumblr media
You and Taika have been known to improv on the show. Was there any improv moment from Season 2 you were particularly proud to see onscreen?
Yeah. Well, one, I noticed that some people are talking about that they thought was scripted, which wasn’t — most of the [scenes where] I’m with Taika are improvised in those emotional close moments — is on the deck of the boat where we’d do the thumb thing. That was all improvised on the day. So that was fun that we got that kind of stuff in. And there were some more little bits and pieces, but that’s one that comes to mind. That worked really well.
By the end of Season 2, Stede and Blackbeard have settled in to open their own inn. Do you think the peace and quiet will last in a possible third season, or will they get bored and want to rejoin the excitement?
Well, obviously as it stands now, it’s very lovely and it’s a nice positive ending, which is lovely for Season 2. But in reality, if you think about the characters, even in the fictional world, they’re both outlaws, they’re pirates, and the British back then… they never gave up. They did track down all the pirates and either hang them or get rid of them. There was only a couple that got away, and it certainly wasn’t those two. So I think what they’re thinking is, yes, this is bliss, but both those characters must be thinking, this is not going to last because you’ve got to sleep with one eye open.
Even though they’re in the middle of nowhere, they’re still in an area where everyone knows what they are, so they’re going to be tracked down. So I think if it was me, [they’d] end up back in action one way or another, especially if their inn is popular, which it probably would be. Word would get around. I mean, in those days, had you heard the Blackbeard and Stede had opened up an inn, [you’d have] to check that one out. It’ll be like Planet Hollywood.
There would be a wait-list, for sure.
Yeah, absolutely. Basically, they’re too famous now that Stede’s killed Ned and everything. He’s a famous pirate. So death is going to come to their door at some point. They’ll have to deal with it.
Do you think this version of Stede and Blackbeard’s story could avoid the fate of the real-life pirates?
Yeah, no, I think you’re dreaming if you think they’re going to live happily ever after.

Let's get OFMD on Gogglebox!
One of the biggest things we can do to try and get Our Flag Means Death picked up by another network is keep making noise about it, and so I had a wild middle-of-the-night idea about one way we could do this: try and get the show on Gogglebox!
For anyone who doesn't know, Gogglebox is an extremely popular and successful show in the UK on Channel 4, where ordinary people (and sometimes celebrities) watch and react to television shows, pop culture moments and films.
Usually, they seem to react to television shows after they finish airing, between a month and two months after from what I've seen from other shows, so we have time to push this. It would be amazing exposure for the show, and really put it in a fantastic spot in terms of visibility in the UK.
So, how do we do this? Well, firstly, I would say tweet about the show and tag Gogglebox on Twitter, letting them know that they should react to it. The 'This Woman's Work' scene, which feels tailor-made for a Gogglebox reaction, is airing on BBC2 this week (19th February 10pm), so a great opportunity to tag them going 'hey, look over here!'.
Another thing that we can do is contact Channel 4 directly. Here's a rundown of how to do that. Click here to get through to their contact page: https://www.channel4.com/4viewers/contact-us.
Step 1: At the bottom of the screen, after filling in your details (if you're outside the UK, you can generate a random UK address to use here: Random UK Address Generator - GeneratorMix), you will see a box labelled ‘My message is about’. Select ‘Channel 4/+ - streaming/on demand/apps’.
Tumblr media
Then click 'submit'. Step 2:
Select how you normally stream Channel 4 (if in doubt, just select ‘Channel4.com’).
When asked if you're contacting them about a technical issue, select ‘No’.
When asked what your query is about, select ‘Programmes’.
Tumblr media
Then click 'submit'. Step 3:
You can then leave your message. Some points to think about including:
Plainly state what you want them to do (you want Gogglebox to feature OFMD, which is currently airing on BBC 2 and available on iPlayer)
Explain what OFMD is and why it’d be a great candidate for Gogglebox (emotional and funny, with bonkers and heartfelt moments, perfect for reacting to!)
Push the diversity angle and how great it would be to see such a queer show featured on Gogglebox
Show that you are aware of Gogglebox by referring to other things they’ve reacted to (some ideas in my message below, or you can have a look on their YouTube) - the ‘Running Up That Hill’ Stranger Things reaction was incredibly popular and did very well for them on social media, so worth mentioning that there’s a similar scene in OFMD
Mention that the show is immensely popular, so featuring it would bring in an automatic audience AND get social media traction too!
This is the message that I left. I tried to include everything as an example of what we could say, but of course if you want to make it shorter and snappier, please do! I'm getting in touch with a recommendation for the current series of Gogglebox. I think it would be fantastic to watch the Goggleboxers react to Our Flag Means Death - Series 2 of which is currently airing on BBC2 (and is all available on BBC iPlayer). It's an amazing queer romantic comedy about pirates, that can have you laughing out loud and bursting into tears in a single episode, which I think would make for some fantastic reactions from the Goggleboxers. After being deeply affected by the tear-jerking reactions to It's A Sin a few years ago, I think it's really important to see the Goggleboxers react to a very different queer story (twice GLAAD-nominated) which, despite having dark moments, ultimately celebrates queer love and queer joy. I remember how brilliant (and popular!) the Celebrity Gogglebox reactions to the iconic 'Running Up That Hill' Stranger Things scene were, and Our Flag Means Death has a similar (but different) scene, in which Ed (Blackbeard) imagines the man he loves as a mermaid helping him fight back to life following a suicide attempt. It's one of the best scenes I've seen in a television show in years, bonkers AND emotional, made me laugh AND sob, and it feels absolutely tailor made for the Goggleboxers to react to (you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSi1M8iQh_s). Not only is the show brilliant, but it also comes with a hugely passionate fanbase (over 86,000 people have signed a petition calling for its renewal, it was one of HBO Max's most popular shows last year in terms of engagement, and it consistently trends on social media with tens of thousands of tweets) who would flock to watch and talk about Gogglebox if it were featured. I really hope you'll consider letting the Goggleboxers watch this utterly brilliant show!   Then make sure you tick the ‘I agree to having my details passed to the production company if necessary’ (we want our messages to get to the people making Gogglebox!)
Tumblr media
Then hit submit, and you’re done!
I think it's worth a shot! Who knows, if we make enough noise, and show how much of a following the show has, the producers might just consider featuring our pirates on the show, and what amazing exposure that will be!

Hey Lovelies <3 I hope that however you celebrated today, (Valentine's Day, Captain Cook's Murder Day, Your Birthday, whatever it happened to be) that you got something positive and fun out of it. I know this day is a mixed bag for a lot of folks, so any way you are able to get something good out of it, I'm excited for. A little gentle reminder, something that took me a lot of years to realise -- you are enough, with or without a partner, I hope you know that. Your partner or lack of one doesn't define you. You are you and you are wonderful and you are enchanting. You could be in the perfect relationship and that other person(s) could bring out the best in you, and yet, the best in you is still you. You shine because you are a beautiful, unique little radiant ball of starstuff, and don't you ever forget it. You deserve just as much love as you give to others, no matter what anyone says, and you deserve to be happy and to be you, just the way you are. Now matter how you feel on any given day, no matter how much energy, or spoons, or love you have for yourself, you are doing enough, and you deserve all the wonderful things this world has to offer. I know I speak for all of us on this safespaceship crew, when I say I hope tomorrow brings you joy, and love, and unhinged laughter. Get some rest babes, love you <3
== Daily Darby / Tonight's Taika ==
Yeah so, since Rhys and Taika already had new footage earlier in the recap tonight. I'm gonna be a sappy little bitch and just show you the same old footage of two gay men kissing because it brings life.

I've now got 425 works up on AO3, so it's time for my scheduled check in on fandom behavior in regard to my works. As a reminder, you can find past entries in this series using the "griselda gimpel AO3 checkins" tag.
Not really anything to report for this check in, honestly. I haven't gotten any harassment since last check in. I did get a couple-few mildly irritating comments on "A Lap Dance for Mr. Bonzo", but nothing that rises to the level of harassment. Just the usual "people forget that when they leave a comment, an actual person will be reading it".
Anyway, last check in, I talked about fandom as a panopticon. This time, I'm thinking about the temporal nature of fandom misbehavior.
Okay, one of the fics I wrote recently was another Sylki fic. And I know there are Sylki Antis. They've never bothered me, personally, but I know they exist. And I wasn't in the Voltron fandom, but my friend Stitch was, and she's told horror stories about the fan misbehavior in that fandom. And I was in the Our Flag Means Death fandom, and I know how toxic the Izzy Antis there were.
Loki season two ended a bit ago. There's still a lovely Sylki community here on tumblr I belong to, but I imagine the fandom has died down a bit. I know Our Flag Means Death has, and I haven't heard of Izzy fans getting harassment recently. Voltron's also faded, it seems.
So...where did the toxic fans (or anti fans) in those fandoms go afterward? Did they mature and stop harassing people? Did they leave fandom all together? Or are the toxic fans of one fandom the same toxic fans of fandoms that were popular in years past? It's definitely worth study if someone has a good methodology.
(I am unable to be the one to conduct this study. I block toxic fans on their fist offense.)
Anyway, to recap, in total:
In the Our Flag Means Death fandom, I got a harassing anonymous Ask on tumblr for being an Izzy fan.
In the This Is How Your Lose the Time War fandom, I got an angry comment on a fan fic because it featured a pit bull. Yes, the dog. No, this one will never stop being hilarious to me.
In The Magnus Protocol fandom, my Dickonzo fic got mocked on tumblr.
I've had multiple instances of getting angry comments or my work reported because I talked about racism.
Coming up, I'll be posting an Ouizzy fic and a Dickonzo fic for two of my big bangs, so we will see what the response to them is.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. spread the self-love ❤
Oh I only just saw this!!!!! Exciting!!! Thank you for sending 💖
These aren't necessarily in my favorite order but here we go!!!
Rupture and Rapture
Good Omens (E)
Pompeii!!!!! Secrecy! Aziraphale eating Crowley out! Destruction of entire cities! All good things djfjdjd. This one was such a challenge to write while sticking to my theme, but also really fun! I'm super proud of how it turned out, and I think the care with the word choice shows! I also learned a lot of volcano terminology which is always a plus.
Sentiments of Great and Indefinite Scale
Good Omens (T, might be M one day who knows)
Is it weird to share a WIP?? I love this fic it is like my sweet child who I nurture by providing many, many shenanigans.
They're in a relationship but Crowley doesn't know it. Somehow. An endless series of misunderstandings. It's goofy, it's goopy, it's banter and romance (OR IS IT) through history.
It's really a blast to write—and I know it's taking me forever but I PROMISE I will finish it. I swear it to you. I am taking your hand and looking into your eyes and promising you it will be completed. I love it soooo much.
Glasshouses
Good Omens (T)
There's something about the vibe of this one that still compels me! I love writing little scenes from their past, imagining where their relationship might be, alluding to what's to come, and using history as a way to parallel that journey. This one takes place during the Industrial Revolution, and I had a really fun time using that transitional period with Aziraphale, wary of change, and Crowley, risk-taker extraordinaire. Plus a greenhouse??? I just love fun settings honestly.
Dessert First
Good Omens (T) - By 11 talented people and also me
I just think everyone should read it because my co-authors are some of the kindest, most talented people I know!!! A collection of sweet vignettes through ineffable history!
I wrote chapter 10, which I am proud of, but I also made all the chapter title cards as a surprise for everyone. The art especially was a really fun exercise in matching tone to style, and every time someone comments about the title cards it makes my whole day! Just a lot of really lovely memories associated with this one ❤️
Dealt a Soft Hand
Our Flag Means Death (M)
My only ofmd fic, but I am super fond of it!!! Also, I had always dreamed of writing a 10k+ M fic 😂 It's a wild, joyous ride from start to finish through Las Vegas. It's about leaning in and doing something wild when it feels Right and having fun being yourself! It's also kind of a love letter to doing cringey tourist things—I fully believe that leaning into an experience is always more fun than not doing it at all. I love traveling, and while I enjoy an authentic local experience too, you can also catch me doing the silly, expected things. ✨

Forget 'Walking The Plank.' Pirate Portrayals—From Blackbeard to Captain Kidd—Are More Fantasy Than Fact.
How we think famous swashbucklers walked, talked, and dressed didn't come from the history books, so where did these pirate myths come from?
— By Jamie L. H. Goodall
Tumblr media
An illustration from 19th-century artist Howard Pyle depicts a man being forced to walk the plank. Although there is no record of this type of punishment, it remains popular in pirate mythology. Photograph By Image Courtesy of Bridgeman Images
Say “pirate,” and people envision grizzled men with eye patches, parrots, and treasure maps. They picture buccaneers forcing their victims to walk the plank, and crying “Shiver me timbers” as they fly the Jolly Roger flag. It turns out, many of these stereotypes are not true. Pirates have been around for nearly as long as people have sailed the world’s waters, and, in fact, still exist. It’s just how they’ve been depicted that’s often misleading. So where did these misinterpretations come from?

Pirate Fashion
Pirates are commonly portrayed wearing colourful attire. He may sport as a loose-fitting shirt with a bandana around his head, a scarf around his waist, ripped pants, wearing tattered boots, like Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Or he may appear a bit foppish, much like Stede Bonnet, the "gentleman pirate" in the 2022 series Our Flag Means Death.
Tumblr media
Common pop culture depictions of pirate garb, as shown here in this early 20th century artwork, are often based on fanciful descriptions of their attire and language. Photograph By Image Courtesy of Bridgeman Images
Unfortunately, these looks are just not true. Much of this ostentation came from American artist Howard Pyle, who took his inspiration from Spanish bandits of the late 19th century. Sailors in the 18th century, pirates included, wore things such as loose pants cut off at the knee and thigh-length blouses.
Prosthetic limbs are another common pirate trait. It’s true some pirates had a wooden leg or hook hand, though it probably wasn’t the norm. More often than not, amputations at sea were likely a death sentence. While ships carried medicine chests, and medical care was often meted out by someone on the crew, infection and blood loss could lead to death. Even if a pirate survived an amputation, his ability to fight would be limited. But losing a limb didn’t mean one could not continue on the ship; the person might serve the crew, for instance, as a cook.
Tumblr media
Many pirate clichés stem from the 1950 film 'Treasure Island,' featuring Robert Newton as the fictional pirate Long John Silver. Photograph By United Archives GMBH, Alamy Stock Photo
Pirate Talk
Common pirate phrases—such as Arrrrr me mateys!” and “Shiver me timbers!”—are common in pirate movies and pop culture. But they’re not legitimate things a pirate would actually have said. Robert Louis Stevenson imagined some of them for his 1883 novel Treasure Island, published more than 150 years after the “golden age” of piracy.
The trope of talking like a pirate is mostly a product of 20th-century Hollywood. In particular, British actor Robert Newton, who played both Blackbeard and Long John Silver. His portrayal of the fictional captain in the 1950s rendition of Treasure Island used an exaggeration of his own West Country accent and would define the sound of a pirate's accent. His portrayal also popularised many of the sayings associated with pirates today. In reality, pirates most probably spoke in a manner similar to all sailors of the time.
Tumblr media

Treasure, Buried or Otherwise
Captain Kidd may have buried his treasure, but that was a rare exception for most pirates. Typically, they spent their ill-gotten gains on women and alcohol at pirate-friendly ports as quickly as they could. Burying treasure would be dangerous due to shifting sands and tides, so one might easily lose their treasure. And there was a distinct lack of trust, not knowing if others might deceptively go back to dig up the treasure on their own.
Also, much of the loot pirates collected was not in the form of silver or gold. Such treasure would have been difficult to come by. The more common "booty" would have been whatever goods or commodities they could get their hands on, including timber, furs, silks, cotton, spices, and medical supplies. They also loaded up on items to perform necessary repairs on their ships, including cable, rigging, and sails.

Pirate Codes
There is evidence that many pirate crews adopted a code of honour or articles of agreement, mostly to keep order on board the ship. These codes dealt with everything from how to divvy up loot, to what happened to pirates if they became injured in the line of duty, to how bad behaviour would be dealt with, to how prisoners would be treated. Some pirate articles have survived to this day, including the code of Englishman George Lowther and his crew, which, for example, compensated a person who lost a limb during a skirmish.
Tumblr media

If a pirate violated the code, it is unlikely they were made to "walk the plank." Little to no historical evidence exists to support that practice, which was largely pulled from fiction, including Treasure Island. If victims were punished in some way, it was typically via keelhauling. Keelhauling was arguably a more hideous fate that involved an individual being tied to a rope and dragged under the ship. Victims of keelhauling either died by bleeding out from injuries inflicted by barnacles on the hull of the ship or by drowning. Other forms of punishment ranged from being thrown overboard to being lashed to being marooned on a desert isle.
Pirate Ships 🛳️ 🚢
Most pirates did not sail Spanish galleons, or even the frigates such as Captain Jack Sparrow’s Black Pearl. They favoured small, more manoeuvrable vessels, which allowed easy escape from larger warships that chased them. During the 16th and 17th centuries, sloops were the most common choice for pirates. They were quick and had a shallow draft, making easier escape into shallow waters. Schooners were another favourite of pirates. Similar to sloops, schooners were fast, simple to manoeuvre, and could easily hide in estuaries because of their shallow draft.
Tumblr media

And, despite popular myth, most pirates did not fly the famous Jolly Roger—a skull and crossbones symbol on a black flag. Some flew a black flag, which meant the pirate was willing to give quarter, while a red flag meant blood and certain death. Blackbeard’s flag showed a skeleton holding a spear pointing at a bleeding heart. Pirate crews also often held the flags of several different nations so they could raise a particular flag to signal being “friendly” to a passing ship, only to raise their pirate flag once they were in close enough range to attack said vessel.
Pirate Fights
One thing that most of the pop culture depictions of pirates got somewhat right is that they liked versatile weapons. Cutlasses, short swords with a slightly curved blade, could be used to effectively fight in the confined areas of a ship and could also be used to butcher meat.
Tumblr media
Top: Bar shot were common tools for pirates, who used them at close range to destroy the rigging and sails of enemy ships. Due to the weights on either end of the bars, they would spin uncontrollably after being fired from a cannon. Bottom: This musket’s barrel and stock were cut down, likely so a pirate could more easily use it in close combat. Photographs By Kenneth Garrett
Pirates also enjoyed using a gun known as a blunderbuss. It had a distinct flared muzzle that sprayed small lead balls at intended victims. Cannons were also common onboard pirate ships. They could be loaded with chain shot (two cannonballs chained together), grapeshot (small cannonballs), or basic cannonballs. Their targets often didn’t stand a chance.
While books, movies, and popular culture may have taken liberty with descriptions of pirates through the ages, these pillagers have terrorised the seas for more than 2,000 years in one form or another, plundering victims and striking fear into their hearts. The most recent pirates work off the coasts of Somalia and Malaysia, looking far different from the “golden age” of piracy depictions. But one thing remains true: They are just as intimidating.

Top 7 Reads of 2023
It's the time of year for lists, so inspired by @missgeevious, here are my favourite books from the past year, in no particular order.
Tumblr media
The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles. Imagine Our Flag Means Death, but instead of becoming a pirate, the main character inherits a country estate and has a fascination with entymology. There's smuggling and murder and other nefarious deeds, but they fade into the background behind the very soft romance.
Tumblr media
Cat Sebastian is one of my always-read authors and I love her new set of stories that are set in the more recent past of the 1960s and 70s. We Could Be So Good is a wonderful mix of character and place and setting with two main characters working through things to decide if they can be together.
Tumblr media
This novella is absolutely perfect. A Flowering of Ink takes the classic misdirected mail trope and creates something soft and wonderful. The two main characters are an architect/artist and a botanist, which is truly the path to my heart.
Tumblr media
I put off reading One Last Stop for so long and I wish I'd read it sooner. It has everything I like - time travel, magic, star-crossed lovers. The twisty connections between the two time periods were really well done and tied the entire story together.
Tumblr media
The final book in the Last Binding series, A Power Unbound delivered the perfect conclusion to this series. I really liked how each of the three books focused on a different pairing but that their stories were part of a larger plot.
Tumblr media
I've followed this author on Twitter for years, but The Red Scholar's Wake is the first of her books that I've read and it's wonderful. The scifi universe is complex, but not so vast that it overwhelms the story. The arranged marriage plot starts out with a very unequal balance of power that eventually evens out through the story.
Tumblr media
A Psalm for the Wild Built is such a difficult book to describe - on the surface it's about two new friends who take a journey together, but it's about so much more - about hope for the world, about figuring out who you are, about finding yourself. I can't wait for the sequel.
What did you read this year? Tagging @weathereyehorizon @blackandwhiteandrose @likerealpeopledo-on-ao3 @rmd-writes @stereopticons @obsessedwithdavrick @chelle-68 and anyone else who wants to share.

Fandom Tag Game
This was really fun to think & reminisce about! Thank you @lupeloto for putting this together, and @suzy-queued @energievie @michellemisfit @creepkinginc @stocious for tagging me!
************ Name: Julia
First fandom you became a part of: Well this was all pre-internet, so the fandoms were all in my imagination: The Goonies & Anne of Green Gables (the PBS series) are my earliest ones. I didn’t even know who to talk to about it back then, so it was a lot of lone-fangirling in middle school.
What was the first TV show fandom you joined: OK look I had this Days of our Lives phase where I found this one message board (I haven’t watched in a LONG time, but Steve & Kayla -who are still on the show- were such a hot couple back in the day)…… and then I did the same for The Office around the time the last writers strike was happening… But my first legit modern-day fandom was probably Schitt’s Creek a couple of years ago, which was the first time I sought out community on socials like Reddit and Facebook.
How old were you: very much all over the place lol
Latest TV/Movie fandom you became a part of? Shameless
A tv/movie fandom you haven’t joined but like to creep on? When Our Flag Means Death first came out, I loved all the gorgeous fan art. They really need to release season 2 already….
Your favourite fandom: Oh this Shameless/Gallavich fandom is VERY special. Granted I don’t have a ton of experience in online fandom spaces, but this community has been really incredible, so warm and welcoming and CREATIVE omg.
The tv show that gives you the most brainrot? Shameless for sure (but you know, just because of that one couple). I do get that anxiety from time to time that I’ll never get brainrot like this again – it’s really fun to move around and create in this space, and I love the inspiration.
The fictional couple that gives you the most brainrot? See above.
Guilty pleasure fictional couple? Very un-guiltily please see above. But I’ll always have a place in my heart for David & Patrick from Schitt’s Creek, and Jim & Pam, of course, from The Office. I’ll throw my Days of Our Lives fave in here too because they were the first to introduce me to my beloved tropes - enemies-to-lovers and epically drawn-out, will they/won't they angst.
Guilty pleasure TV show? Is this where I admit to watching Just Like That so I can complain about it? It’s no Sex in the City…..
And finally something that made you happy this week? I started a new audiobook - Last Night at the Telegraph Club, and it’s set in the city where I live. I always love reading books or watching TV shows & movies where I recognize the set! Also re-audiobooking Red, White & Royal Blue, and the narrator is so much fun to listen to.

(Our Flag Means Death season 2 spoilers.)
I think the queerbait-adjacent feeling we collectively had in season 2 was also because Izzy is one of the older characters in the crew of OFMD and his death happened shortly after the song he did in drag (the moment he embraced his queerness). He is characterised as older by being with Blackbeard for so long that he's threatening to resign during the beginning of the series.
I remember reading somewhere on Tumblr by ameba-from-space that "old man yaoi hits different" because it allows queer viewers to imagine a future where they can have the privilege to grow old and still be allowed to keep their queer identity. As in, they are not killed for being queer, nor are they forced to stay in the closet for the rest of their life.
Something about killing the oldest member of the crew is kinda like symbolically saying, "the price of finding your queerness and displaying it like a flag is that you might die shortly afterwards." Our flag means death.

Our Flag Means Death is returning to our screens in just over a month, and I couldn't be more excited! The teaser for Season 2 was out yesterday. Naturally, that means I had to write a post about a theory I have for this upcoming series and for what I think certain parts of the teaser are.
So strap in, and let the rambling commence!
(Obviously, I will be talking about the Our Flag Means Death Season 2 teaser. If you do not want to have spoilers or if you have not yet seen it, then do not read!!!)
The beginning of the teaser opens up on a clip featuring everyone's favourite Gentleman Pirate as he is seen kissing a message in a bottle and throwing it into the ocean.
He then begins to speak, reading (at least we assume) the letter he has written. The full letter from what we have is this.
"Dear Ed, I love everything about you. I love being near you. Breathing the same air. I think of you often. I hope you're thinking of me as well."
Which is a really weird lay out for a letter. I know we may not have the whole letter, but if it is written in the order in which Stede reads it to us, then that just feels strange. Would you not first right that you are thinking of someone? Imply that you miss them, then continue onto why you love them and why you miss them? Plus, the way he says, "I love everything about you. I love being near you. Breathing the same air." Sounds ever so slightly different. Just slightly enough for me to notice.
This leads me to my theory.
Most of what we hear isn't the letter. That part Stede says slightly differently? It sounds much more like what someone would say to their loved one if said loved one was in doubt of their love, doesn't it? It sounds like Stede reassuring Ed. Comforting him. Apologising that he left and gently reassuring him that he is enough for Stede. That Ed is loved and cared for. Imagine their first meeting after Season 1. Stede would be so happy until he saw Ed. Until he realised what he had done to Ed. How broken Ed was. And Ed? Ed would go full anger. He would start shouting and pushing at Stede, threatening him maybe, until he broke down. Until he began to cry and quietly whisper that he was sorry he wasn't enough. That he wished he could be enough for Stede. That he thought Stede loved him back. Thought they would be together forever. And then Stede left, and he was broken. Again. He had finally found someone that looked beyond the curtain, and he had left. Now imagine Stede seeing this, his heart aching for Ed, and he slowly cups the others' cheeks in his hands. Beginning to whisper small reassurances and apologies. Tell Ed how much he loves him, how sorry he is for leaving, and that he will never leave again.
That's what the "I love everything about you. I love being near you. Breathing the same air." sounds like. It sounds like someone reassuring the person they love that everything is okay.

Road Trip with Rhys and Finn Darby
At 49, New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby says he's finally found the confidence to be a leading man.
He joins Summer Times for a road trip with his son Finn.
The Route? Auckland to Nelson. The passengers? Marcel Marceau and Marcel Duchamp. The vehicle? A 1984 Land Rover.
Music comes courtesy of Finn’s indie-folk-rock band Great Big Cow.
Tumblr media
Rhys Darby filming the TV show Our Flag Means Death at Bethells Beach (Te Henga) Photo: Samba Schutte
(click below to listen the audio)
Now based in Los Angeles, Rhys has fond memories of childhood roadies with his mum.
“We went from Pakuranga to Orewa which was lovely. We stayed in a camping ground, and I fondly remember that one because I saw a ghost and saw some big footprints on the beach.
“Bigfoot…turns out was just a big man's foot I think, but you know, when you're young.”
Last year, Darby returned home to Aotearoa to film the second season of the HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death*.
“We were in New Zealand during the rainy season, which could be any time really, last year making that.
“And it was really special because we got to be home. The first year, the first season, we were here in Los Angeles. I was 15 minutes from my house. And that was cool and then the whole show got moved to New Zealand, which was … it's a plus and minus on my account because obviously, I'll leave these guys, but I get to go to the old home.
“And it was really fantastic. Working with the New Zealand crew and just having more New Zealanders in the cast, as well. It's very Aotearoa-heavy season two. So yeah, I'm really proud of it.”
Tumblr media
New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby hosting the 2023 International Emmy Awards Photo: chaoticmulaney
In something of a career pivot, Darby also hosted the International Emmy Awards last November.
“It was amazing because I thought 'It's not my bag. I'm not a host, I'm not a jokes guy. And I also don't kind of like rib people, my humour is very optimistic and fun. It's not like the kind of thing Ricky Gervais does where you bring people down to make light of things.
“So when they asked me I was like 'I don't know, what I'm gonna do?' I was picked because it's international and because I can do physical comedy as well. So, I wrote this monologue and also involved a lot of funny walks and some physical stuff. They worked out really well and I had so much praise from the audience and from the producers saying that was one of the best hosts have ever had.
“Because with a strict English-speaking person who's just doing quick gags, half the audience, it just goes over the head. So, what I offered was something that I guess they had more universal appeal.”
Darby currently has a number of films in the pipeline in which he takes a leading role.
“Thanks to Our Flag Means Death I've kind of proven to myself, and hopefully the world, that I can front something.
“So I want to do more like that. I want to do movies, I want to star in a film. I'm writing a screenplay this year. And I'm also involved in about three movie projects that are likely to come together this year, and which have me leading them.
“I've been a character actor for so long, and I've popped up in many, many things in small parts here and there, where I've made everyone laugh, and then I run away.
“But it's taking that next step of going, OK, imagine watching me for an hour and a half, letting me lead you down this track and have the confidence that now finally, at the ripe old age of 49, I think I can do that.”
*Max has announced that it will not be making a third season of Our Flag Means Death

Imagine different fandoms as countries.
Recent fan news would be like;
Due to the lack of quality Western animation recently because of a writer's strike stalling production, the United States of Anime have been slowly expanding their borders, either by buying land from other fandom or taking them by force.
Eastern fandoms in general have been growing with the rise of Manhwas and Danmei.
The former hubs of western fandom such the Potterverse or the Superwholock union are in decline.
Potterverse because the series has essentially ended due to author controversy, and the SWS Union because of the controversial end of one of 1/3 of it's fandom.
There is still hope for the Western fandoms with new fandoms being created for Good Omens and Our Flag Means Death.
On the other hand there's an equal rise in fandoms in the USA with the rise of JJK (although there have been reports of riots in the fanspace due to a very popular character being killed off) and Chainsaw man.
There have even been reports that the Old Hetalia fandom is not actually dead.

Well as you can imagine, the David Jenkins IG is the big news of today. The clowning forecast has gone up significantly. Dad posted one of the late-blooming SaveOFMD banners in NY and attached Elton John - Candle In The Wind to the post. This song has some very specific significance to our fandom.
Tumblr media
Apparently back when we lost Lucius in Season 1, Chaos Dad posted this song to Nathan Foad. Src @cptn_brightsky's Twitter Post
Tumblr media
Now ADD to that... David Jenkins ALSO added this picture of Matthew Maher standing in front of a saveOFMD flyer found out on the street.
Tumblr media
NOW OF COURSE, we are all clowning, but I think as usual Chaos Dad is trying to give us info without giving us info since the fandom pays so much attention to every little detail.
Tumblr media
@saltpepperbeard has a theory that I'm down to clown with until I turn blue in the face. Src.
Tumblr media
So yeah, as always take the clowning how you will, but I'll be honest, this looks like great news to me. It really does. CLOWN ON MY FRIENDS.

Why Deleting and Destroying Finished Movies Like Coyote vs Acme Should Be a Crime
This article is from yesterday but this blurb was pretty damn specific so I wanted to make sure if you missed it you got to see some of the reasons why Max did cancel OFMD.
"Some of the company’s tactics post-merger were garden-variety ruthless, like eliminating 87 series from its streaming platform Max, so that they won’t have to pay union-mandated residuals to the talent that created already-existing programs or pony up funds to produce more seasons of existing ones (such as “Our Flag Means Death,” one of the company’s most popular and critically acclaimed comedies—canceled after just two seasons)."

Have YOU heard of this awesome new Monkey Island Inspired Point and Click Adventure Game by @blueberreads and @eldawee? They've been working on it for months and it's FINALLLLLLLY HEEEERE!
Tumblr media
These folks are so incredibly talented! Please go check it out here! https://dawee.itch.io/lighthouse If you're using a MAC OS you'll most likely need to download an executable at the bottom of the main page. Just FYI! If it prompts you with the "you downloaded this from the internet" error just click OK. I already started playing with it and I'm in love.

I pushed Ed and he asked if I wanna do something weird xD Okay no more spoilers, GO CHECK IT OUT!

== Love Notes ==
Alrighty lovelies. It's been another busy day. Lots of clowning, lots of hope, lots of emotional roller coasters. I hope you had a good time and generally it was more positive than negative. I have a lot I want to say, but my brain is still pretty foggy. So I'll make this short.
Sometimes when things go well, our brain gets excited and then they overcompensate when we calm down. It starts to think a lot more negatively because it had so much extra dopamine for a time. When that happens, little things can be really devastating. I just want you to remember that we all make mistakes and YOU, you beautiful imperfect being are not your mistakes. They hurt, and we learn from them, but they don't define us. Try not to listen to your brain if it's telling you otherwise. You are so very wonderful.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
Here's a picture I found today I thought really applied to all you wonderful people. Thank you to all the folks who reached out to me and checked in and sent me love when you knew I was struggling (there are too many to list and I don't know if you want to be tagged so please just know how much I appreciate you). I love you all so much, and I'm so lucky to how found people who make me feel like it's ok to be me.
