It’s been like 4 hours and I cannot stop thinking about it. Every time I stand up I start shaking. I feel nauseous and am coughing constantly. I feel like I am choking. ALRIGHT SO

I watched HTTYD 2 for the first time and I have Thoughts. Spoiler warning ig but like, pretty sure everyone's watched the film who's reading this post anyway.

Thing number one: THEY DID THE GANG SO DIRTY???? Transitioning from RTTE to the second film gave me massive whiplash on that front, they gave them like???? no time????? no lines????? like wtf man????? Astrid turns up occasionally to give Hiccup a pep talk, with the rest of her limited screentime being devoted to a b-plot that was kinda pretty bad. Snotlout, the twins, and Fishlegs only barely exist, and the whole love thingy situation with Eret, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Fishlegs was just....bleh.

Thing number two: The film simultaneously felt too fast and too slow. The slow scenes sometimes dragged a bit too long imo, and the fast scenes could be pretty difficult to follow, with just, a lot of stuff going on, but not in a good way (if that makes sense?).

Visuals were gorgeous throughout, the closeup shots of the dragons was cool because wow the skin looks so textured. Loved how they kept the philosophy of the scenes only being lit with objects actually there (or whatever it was), the lighting was ough yes very nice. The motion of the people (particularly hiccup) felt very motion-capture, but not enough to detract from the film.

I really wish I could've seen more of him exploring the uncharted parts of the world, that was cool (ig rtte is that but ehh).

There were definitely flashes of brilliance in the film as well. The flight scenes with Hiccup and Toothless were stunning, the scene where Stoick meets Valka is great, Stoicks funeral was also very good. One of my favourite moments was Hiccup flying in on the wingsuit, covering Drago in zippleback gas, and blowing him up because yes yes yes this is the person with the heart of a cheif and soul of a dragon!!!!!

Returning to visuals, there are many shots that are just gorgeous. I would say that it felt less like every frame could be a painting (which the 1st on genuinely did feel like a lot of the time) and more like a lot of okay stuff and then BAM most beautiful shot you've ever seen. They really got the sense of scale well, and did a good job placing how big and fast the dragons are in the 3d space (most of the time), something which I felt the shows were lacking, probably just due to not having the budget for huge sweeping landscapes that actually look any good, among many other reasons I'm sure.

Love that Hiccup kept the changes to the sword that Viggo made (even though yes, Viggo being the one to have the idea was added retroactively). Also cool that it retracts and stuff, it's cool to see the final design after the iterations in rtte. same for wingsuit.

Loved that Toothless's loyalty/friendship/love for Hiccup was what brought him back.

Drago was super forgettable as a villain ngl. I just kinda didn't care about him. I was very surprised that Hiccup didn't bring up his leg when Drago was monologuing about losing his arm to a dragon. Also was Drago supposed to be Hiccups foil? Or something? idk, whatever, I just didn't care about him. Why did he have a big army? idk he just does. Literally what even was his end goal i genuinely don't remember and I just watched the film.

If they could make the film cover a short TV show to flesh out basically everything more that could've been neat, but idk if the budget would stretch that far and still produce something good. Maybe the film was trying to fit in too much? Idk lol.

I'll probably watch No.3 on my own cause my family would NOT stop talking -_-

Chris felt his back hit the bed, a soft moan escaping from him as Zack’s arms unwrapped themselves from around his waist, reminding him that he needed to be carried into this position. He felt the blond’s hands running down his bare chest, over his abdomen, brushing against his hips, the touch making Chris wince a little as he heard his own breathing hitch.

“Zack…”

The voice was quiet, but the blond replied to it with a quiet hum, the rest of his reply drowning under the first, almost obscenely loud moan Chris let out as Zack’s lips connected with the skin on his hips, right where the bruises were slowly forming from their previous encounter of this nature. Zack’s smile was obvious against his skin, his lips taking care of the parts he had decorated for Chris moments earlier while the brunet had been begging Zack to give it to him harder and faster than he had probably ever begged in his life.

“You’re so beautiful,” Zack mumbled between the kisses, Chris barely registering the words over the almost nauseatingly euphoric sensation of pain shooting through him as Zack’s lips made contact with his fresh bruises, making him moan loudly. “Absolutely stunning. Gorgeous.”

New praise and word of love between every kiss, Chris felt his head already swimming. He had barely had time to come down from the previous high, already being pushed on the edge again by Zack. By his own request, obviously, this was absolutely what he wanted, craved, yearned for, but hearing it was still making his head spin, his heart beat just a little bit faster at every syllable.

He didn’t even notice his hands grabbing Zack’s hair, trying to guide his mouth just where he wanted it to be so desperately. Only after Zack stopped leaving soft, teasing kisses on his hips, slowly afterwards pulling up and pulling Chris into a real kiss on his lips, his awareness was back on the situation at hand.

“You look amazing all flustered up.”

If Chris could have blushed deeper, he would have, but he knew that task to be impossible. Eyes still closed, just enjoying the feeling of having Zack close, hovering above him, leaving little kisses on his face, his lips, the corner of his mouth. Knowing how obviously aware he was of Chris’ desperation over him was just making it so much harder to resist him.

“Just give me a bit more time to admire you. Everything in due time, darling.”

Chris slowly fluttered his eyes open, that one word echoing in his mind as his hands tightened their grab in Zack’s hair, pulling him into another kiss. Deep, heated. chesnokov's spaseniye sodelal is russian orthodox perfection fr. when my choir in undergrad read thru this i was stood between two low basses and at THAT part (1:32) i felt like i was being punched from the inside out. also the text means "salvation is created in the midst of the earth" and i think that's like. so fucking sick

stacey gibbs' arrangement of ezekiel is THE american spiritual arrangement to me. i once sang this in an italian church under a mexican conductor and then later we all sang it drunkenly for the owner at the hotel we were all staying at it was wild and so so so fun. such a beautiful and massive example of a joyful american spiritual also it's straight up a banger honestly. could talk ad nauseum abt how badass black choral scholars are and how grateful i am for all of the work that they've done and for inviting ppl to learn abt and experience it <3

holst's i love my love is one of my favs of all time. unfortunately england fucking devours when it comes to their choral tradition and this piece does one of my fav things where the way the composer sets the text changes its meaning! it's abt a woman named nancy who is in bedlam bc her love died at sea and it effectively broke her. while there, he comes to her, alive, breaks her out and they get married. while the poem itself shows a happy ending, the way holst plays w tempo and texture makes me go hmmm. 90% sure he did not show up and she's experiencing a delusion of sorts to cope w her grief (the i love my love's in the sopranos & altos at 1:24 kind of emulate a rocking motif, almost as if she's rocking herself back and forth in a soothing gesture, or the rocking of the ship he died on) and that tenor entrance in the melody after almost emulates her love coming to rescue her. god this whole piece makes me feel like my skin is on fire and i think it's a devastating portrayal of mental illness and you can rip it from my cold dead hands

stanford's beati quorum via is literally just gorgeous front to back. again unfortunately the english stay slaying

jake runestad's a silence haunts me literally does fucking haunt me and it changed the way i think about choral music. it's a setting of an unsent letter of beethoven's where he talks about losing his hearing and how afraid he is of losing it. this one you def have to watch bc there's a visual element to it! no spoilers but holy shit it shuts my brain down it's brutal and beautiful. i saw its premiere in 2019 and the entire hall was sobbing. like i have the words "be well" tattooed on me bc of it. the way the piano quotes moonlight sonata and his 9th symphony and the tensions emulating his tinnitus. OUGH

KENNY THE ACTUAL LOMLLLLLLLLL HE’S SO GOOD. THIS OST IS SO GOOD. IT BLEW ME AWAY. it’s so. imposing somehow. but also so calm. it has this magical vibe…… it literally sounds like a ghibli ost at the very end and i love it SO much it’s so perfect for him. it changed who i am as a person. when kenjaku does their speech and flaunts the prison realm before leaving… LIFE CHANGING . it’s just gorgeous i’m PRAYING that it makes a comeback in s3 maybe specifically for my belovedest jjk fight yuki vs kenny vs choso…. though i could honestly see this playing somewhere during the zenin confrontation. ANYWAY i just love it the final part is soso tasty :3

Poll Runner: This musical RUINS my mental state every time I listen to it, and this is the song that really digs into Evan's character and what the story is actually about. Feeling invisible, unable to help yourself climb out if the dark mental hole you've dug. Just the lyrics alone... never mind there's those gorgeous harmonies in the chorus repeat that feels like life is spiralling around you... it's fine.

Summary:

I did not expect to start sobbing when i finished this game. The whole story was so fun and unique, I loved how we traveled to new places in this game. It's a very sad story but with a very heart-warming end. The art and animation was stunning and so fun, just like in Curious Village. I love that Don Paolo is just there, basically just a red herring trying to mess with Layton. I also wish Flora was in the story more instead of just being used to bring Don Paolo back. I really enjoyed the puzzles again but I def struggled a lot more with Curious Villages' puzzles. There were hard puzzles for sure but I think they were just the kind of puzzles I'm good at. I also liked the new bonus mini games... except for the hamster, I hate that rodent. Why does he sound like that he scared me and ruined beautiful moments of me admiring the scenery. But the camera was really fun to construct and the differences puzzles were genuinely really hard. I constantly struggled to find the last difference. I also loved the tea puzzle, it was so unique and it fit the Layton theme incredibly well. I love how each character has a lot of personality and how there's always more to learn about Layton and Luke. Layton is a great sword fighter??? And the shrouded origins of Luke and Layton's relationship. I cannot wait to play more and see what else the story surprises me with!
