Okay, so lets talk about Chidi, Eleanor, Simone and Tahani.

I don’t multiship a lot, usually I’m a one OTP per character sort of person. But once in a while a show happens where that’s impossible. And The Good Place is one of those shows.

It’s like... I love Eleanor and Chidi okay? They’re adorable and they really have earned a place in my heart. Plus the fact that Eleanor seems to have fallen in love with Chidi in every other one of Michael’s attempts is pretty significant.

But I enjoy this show’s commentary on the soulmate myth as being a flawed one. It’s not about being ‘meant for each other’ it’s about ‘finding something beautiful in each other’ and how that doesn’t have to be only with one person in our lifetime.

Eleanor and Chidi found something beautiful in each other and it was absolutely amazing.

But the premise of this show allows them to explore how the variations of chance and circumstances can give different results.

Which is why Tahani fell for Chidi in the first attempt and Jason in Attempt #803.

And then there’s the fact that I also ship Tahani and Eleanor. Quite a lot. I’ve loved their chemistry from the beginning and the fact that Eleanor has been pretty significantly attracted to Tahani has been kinda important to me. I love me my bisexual characters.

So seeing that a version of events is possible where Eleanor and Tahani fall in love with each other would be FORKING AMAZING. And I NEED IT.

And the setup this season is perfect for it.

Tahani was introduced to Eleanor in a way that immediately showcases how much of a mess Tahani is too so there’s no initial perfectness there for Eleanor to chafe under. There’s just a very tall, very very attractive woman who is just as much of a disaster person as her.

And Eleanor is introduced to Tahani as the first person EVER to not be more interested in her sister. And that was definitely very attractive to her.

And btw during that scene Chidi looked the same way that Eleanor looked when she saw him first talking to Simone (the only difference being that during this scene they didn’t make a huge deal about putting the camera on his face the way they had Eleanor’s) so I wouldn’t be surprised to see some matchmaking attempts from his side too.

And yes, Chidi has Simone this season but I actually don’t agree that this is one of the reasons Tahani/Eleanor is fair game... mostly because that’s kinda of a gross way to look at it.

Simone is AMAZING and in one episode they managed to really convey how perfect she is for Chidi. Not to say that Eleanor wasn’t perfect for Chidi too. But that’s exactly my (and I think their) point. There is no one single person that’s perfect for Chidi. There is no one single person that’s perfect for Eleanor. Or Tahani. Or Jason. Or Simone. Or Janet.

It’s about finding a person that fits them and then building a relationship with that person until they’re perfect for each other, until they become what we would consider ‘soulmates’. And in this show, where we get to see them grow again and again while they don’t remember the previous versions, it doesn’t have to be the same person every time.

So I really think that in this one it’s going to be Chidi’s relationship with Simone.

And I WANT this to also be the one where we see Eleanor’s always present crush on Tahani getting a chance to become something more. And that’s for multiple reasons. Because they're cute and I ship them. Because I really want them to give us more queer representation than just funny throwaway lines about how hot Eleanor thinks Tahani is. Because I approve of the message it would send about how finding love once doesn’t mean you’ll never find it again. And because I just think it would make for a good story line.

Basically what I’m saying is:

We often talk about parallels between Chidi/Eleanor and Michael/Eleanor but one that I haven’t seen brought up enough is Michael actively shipping Eleanor/Chidi paralleling Eleanor shipping Chidi/Simone in S3 (and to a slightly more reluctant degree in S4). 

Again I just love that Mike Schur avoids the horrible toxic jealousy with his relationships that we had to put up a lot of sitcoms back in the day.

unlabeled / straight / they/she/it fanny pack lover. believes in bubble gum chapstick supremacy, and has a huge keychain collection in their void. okay side rant i just love janet so much, to be able to see someone who is meant to be the perfect/ideal “object” understand she deserves just as much agency over her own body and labor is just so powerful, just like the very stark difference of her cardboard cut out traditional helper “woman” origins and their future self who takes control over her own expression and identity as a person outside of her traditional role.

Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?Listen, I GET the short seasons and the points you’re trying to make and the breakneck pace you have to move the plot at to get to those points, but.......it’s really starting to feel like it’s at the expense of your characters[Also, I mean.......see Q13. I get the ‘main character!’ ‘biggest stars!’ arguments, I do, but.......it’s been 3 seasons and we know like, 3 things about Chidi’s pre-Bad Place life, but we’ve gotten the equivalent of like 3 episodes-worth of Eleanor’s]

If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?Either longer seasons or more seasons, because I love character focus and I miss s1

Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…2.07 never happens. it’s fine. Honestly, instead of setting up Chidi and Simone as an adorable and lovable couple (and Simone as a brilliant and well-matched new member of the gang) while positioning him and Eleanor as close friends for 4 episodes before completely dropping Simone as a character for 9 episodes and smashing Eleanor and Chidi back together only to then bring Simone back as essentially a complication for chelenor and a symbol of guilt/anxiety for Chidi that causes him to decide to reset himself back to 0 when he’s already the character we know the least about.....I would have s3 be nearly all-Earth; the gang coming together and becoming friends, Michael and Janet somehow exposing the secrets of the afterlife and the team figuring out what that means for each of them/how they approach life after this (like Jeremy Bearimy but with 2-3 episodes instead of 3-4 plots in one half hour), ideally one episode each for the original four humans to reunite/confront those in their past who were part of what shaped them into the people they are now, Chidi and Simone happily dating while Eleanor enthusiastically supports them as they are two of her best friends and she is thrilled that they’re happy together and the connection she has with Chidi does not need to be romantic in order for it to be impactful and help them both become their best selves. (and meanwhile everybody else dates in whatever arrangements they fall into - but elhani rises and it’s glorious.) And maybe the last.....2-3 episodes are when they make the jump to the Good!Good Place and meet Gwendolyn bc I love her and Simone comes with them and it turns out the new neighbor connected to Chidi is Uzo because friendships are important too! and honestly I don’t have a fancy way around Chidi resetting himself again - it’s a corner well-written into - but maybe we just don’t and his conflict next season is dealing with the knowledge that his best and closest friend has no memory of him or their lives together

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

I don’t get Robb and Margaery. I believe in ship and let ship, but it’s pure crack for me. Even Robb and Roose have more base. They never interact, never as much as consider each other as a possibility. It comes exclusively from Catelyn’s thoughts that it would be more profitable for Robb to renegade the deal with the Freys only for a bride with far more resources, that is, it was much more about Jeyne W. than about Margaery herself. I also don’t get shipping Ned and Cat with anyone but each other. Same for Arya and Gendry.

For Teen Wolf, I don’t get Malia and Scott. That caught me completely unawares. Thankfully I wasn’t invested in any other ship for them and, actually, Malia is the best girl to stay with him. He needs someone with firm bondaries and the ability to enforce them.

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

They haven’t met yet, but I’d like it if Dany and Jon remained platonic. I don’t think they will, but argh, ENOUGH INCEST! ENOUGH INCEST! It’s not even something that bothers me, but it’s everywhere in the text, I need a break. Plus, I ship Dany and Tyrion, I’d prefer if that happened. Jon x Tyrion is also good. Maybe Tyrion can just sit between them.

For The Good Place, Eleanor and Tahani. I think it’s pretty clear that Eleanor is attracted to her, but I don’t see any signs that Tahani reciprocates, so I particularly don’t see the appeal.

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

I hate all Petyr ships because his very existence makes my blood boil, but Sansa and Petyr is the worst of them to me. But I don’t think it’s THAT popular, compared to other Sansa ships. I also don’t like Sansa and Harry the Heir or Sansa and Tyrion in the books. In the show they’re cute, but still less so than Dany and Tyrion.

For Teen Wolf, Scott and Alison and Scott and Kira. The first is the main ship for the characters, but I really disliked their dynamic. She broke up with him twice! And she had good reasons both times. Scott and Kira is less popular, I think, but I hate it even more. I also dislike Derek and Kate and Derek and Jennifer, but most fic shows those in similar ways to the show, as abusive relationships, so it doesn’t bother me as much.

For The Good Place, it doesn’t go as far as being NOTP material, but I didn’t enjoy Simone and Chidi together. I prefer him with Eleanor and Simone can get herself a nice significant other that doesn’t need as much constant pressuring.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

There’s a few candidates so I’ll go with two. First up is Sarah Manning, my GIRL, god, I loved Sarah’s arc and how she stumbled into this sisterhood despite trying her best to run away from it wound up leading it and being precisely the right person to lead it, in a way others couldn’t. Sarah knows how to fight her way out of corners and through the course of the show manages to aim that properly to help the people she cares about. She starts off as the bad mom and winds up becoming such a force of nature not just for Kira but for everyone in her family. You’re the wildtype, Sarah!! I also thought the Tenth Doctor’s arc was wonderfully done; he imploded in precisely all the ways that were set up very early on in his tenure and the arc was heartbreaking but masterful.

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

Love triangles. They’re the worst!!!! God!! I’m trying to think if there’s ever been a love triangle I’ve enjoyed and I’m drawing blanks. Usually it’s so obvious what the OTP is and the other thing is just wasting everyone’s time, and in even worse scenarios I like the failed ship better than the obvious endgame ship so it’s doubly frustrating. Even when the triangle itself isn’t very, uh, triangular (eg. Chidi/Eleanor/Simone) it just feels like a waste of my life? Why did we do any of this?

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.People who meet and instantly dislike each other but have to work together for some common goal and over the course of the misadventure realize “oh no we’re best friends now actually” and they’re mad about it. Ten and Donna, Eight and Lucie, Hardy and Miller, Rhys and Fiona. Best.
