Briony is watching Nyx put on his clothes when she thinks how this might be the last time she’ll ever see him again.

It is a strange and frightening thought to entertain, not when she still ached from the sweet sore of how they made love only moments ago to welcome the breaking dawn. But the thought of it arrives nonetheless, steals the joy of her reprieve like a thief in the night, a ruthless phantom in the dark. It grips her like an armored hand around her throat. She could never imagine now what her life would be like without Nyx. All she knows is that the mere idea of losing him paralyzes her with a pain that she can almost taste.

The distress must have been too obvious on her face when Nyx sits on the edge of the bed and asks: “Why are you looking at me like that, Brie Cheese? Something on my face?” He smiles, pinches her chin between warm, calloused fingers.

Briony shakes her head and says nothing. She pulls the sheets closer to her chest.

“Something is bothering you, Mrs. Ulric,” Nyx says in a tone that is somehow both playful and certain. “Talk to me, my future wife—“

“Stay,” says Briony. “Don’t go now. Let’s stay in bed for a while.”

Nyx exhales a breathy laugh. “Brie,” he says, brushing her cheek, “I’m only going to the HQ. I’ll be back before you know it. And we’ll be seeing each other tonight, alright?”

Briony nods. She is quiet again.

Just as Nyx is about to leave, Briony catches the sleeve of his jacket.

“I love you,” she says, as if her I love you is a plea and prayer all at once, as if it is a muffled scream against the silence that rallies, Don’t go, stay, don’t leave me, promise me you’ll come back.

Nyx smiles back at her, presses a kiss on the crown of her head, her face, her neck, her mouth. “I love you, too,” he says. “I will always love you.”

Briony watches Nyx shut the door behind him. The soft click is a distinct and cruel sound that she will remember in the years to come.

There was no room for doubt that Briony loved him remarkably and so admirably in spite of it all. And this was why Nyx loved her for reasons he could no longer list. The only thing he knew with much certainty was that loving Briony meant I love you in a way no one else will love you, or I love you in a way that I will never love anyone else. He never thought he could find a love so soul-consuming; not once did he believe the concept of true love or soulmates or any of that bullshit when all his past affairs had been merely affairs, trysts fueled by lust under the false pretense of love. Too many people had loved him, and he had loved all of them badly, but with Briony, Nyx wanted to make sure he finally did it right.

3. What is one thing that one person does that drives the other absolutely crazy?

It drives Briony out of her wits whenever Nyx always has a perfect comeback in their argument. Like, he always has something snappy to say and it just pisses her off. For Nyx, Briony has the uncanny ability to say the most suggestive innuendoes that just.... tests his libido at the worst of times........ like, sucking a popsicle? And telling him how she likes it hard on her mouth? (Sometimes she does this on purpose as an act of revenge.)

11. What do they admire the most about the other?

Briony, as much as she is annoyed by Nyx’s guts, actually admires him for it. Most people see his bravery as arrogance, but she knows that he is more than that. Meanwhile, Nyx admires Briony’s resilience. He knows how she, too, has been through a lot in life, but seeing her pull through every single time despite breaking over and over, it makes him want to be a better person that she deserves.

12. What would both say is their favourite memory of the other?

They’re pretty much fond of the same memory: all their road trips to Galahd. Briony, being raised in the cold, mountainous province of Tenebrae, never thought she would come to love the tropics. In Galahd, Nyx taught Briony how to swim, where they spent lazy afternoons by the beach with Briony reading her books in peace and Nyx insisting he took her photos because he wanted to be the Instagram boyfriend. “You make the perfect muse!” he would always tell her because she’s more comfortable being behind the camera, but she indulges him, anyway. She teaches him how to take pictures with her Polaroid. He nails it with one shot. They would always make it a point to watch the rosy sunsets by the shore of his house, and on sunny days, Nyx took Briony to a secret cove where he always played with Libertus as a kid. And just when Nyx thought Galahd could never be the same again, with Briony, he felt he was finally home at last—and she, too, felt the same way.

13. Who steals the covers the most?

Briony. She has a notorious habit of wrapping herself with it like a burrito. Nyx finds this adorable so he lets her hog all his covers. He settles on embracing her to keep himself warm instead.

1. Who is the most affectionate?

Nyx. Briony is his first serious relationship in a very long time, so he tends to be a little more extra about it. He shows his affection in a language that transcends physical intimacy: making her favourite breakfast of bacon and eggs, arranging random playlists of music that he knows she would like (which she does, 100% of the time), sending her memes and a text that says “you know this reminded me of you lol,” leaving random dumb notes in her locker in his chicken-shit handwriting like “i saw yura staring at u with lovey-dovey eyes but i’m not jealous i promise just want you to know fyi i love u & you are the moon of my life,” taking her to concerts and museums and the local joint that offers the best Tenebraen food in the city. Nyx has never done this with anyone he’s ever dated, but with Briony, it feels like a natural order of things. He’s not a big fan of grand gestures of loudly professing one’s love to the world; frankly, he enjoys it best when he has her all to himself, indulging her with all of her favourites. Simple as they may be, this for him is already a grand gesture in and of itself, one that he loves doing whenever he’s with her.

You know what, as much as Nyx likes being the big spoon and his body drape all over Briony like some coat of protection, he loves being the little spoon. He’s going to deny this, but Briony knows.

3. Most common argument?

Most of the time, their arguments revolve around Nyx’s so-called recklessness in battle. Briony argues that he doesn’t always need to show off to get the job done, but Nyx counters that it’s not technically showing off if he is that good so, yeah. This goes on for hours. They resolve this eventually in bed. (To Whiskey’s horror, no less.)

Nyx. He does this all the time whenever Briony refuses to join him in the beach.

Strangely enough, they love each other’s eyes. Nyx loves Briony’s mismatched colour. Meanwhile, Briony often tells Nyx how his blue eyes remind her of the sea, and how she could probably drown just by looking at him. This, she soon learned, is the easiest way to get Nyx all flustered. 

7. What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?

Most of their conversation becomes tensed and stilted. Nyx is new to the feeling. So is Briony. It’s all uncharted territory to them, one that feels too foreign to express in words. 

8. Nicknames? & if so, how did they originate?

Briony doesn’t have a nickname for Nyx. Well, except for calling him babe but that’s about it. Nyx, however, calls her either Brie or Brie Cheese. The origin story of it is, well, nothing special. Nyx has a habit of giving people nicknames based on whatever embarrassing moment they remember them from. For Briony’s Brie Cheese, it started when someone in the Glaive asked her out on a date with a bouquet of brie cheese. She turned it down, but later on she admitted to Nyx how she could’ve just taken the cheese first before she turned the guy down. But she was too nice to be a dick, so yep.

Nyx never calls her Ronnie, though. Says it’s someone else’s thing for her.

9. Who worries the most?

Briony. She knows how Nyx is prone to doing stupid things, like getting into fights or getting himself hurt.

10. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?

Nyx. This is his game. He has Briony’s order at Varma’s memorized by heart, knows exactly what she’ll order depending on her mood. If she’s particularly hungry, she’ll order for a grilled tomato and brie sandwich, strawberry shortcake, and one cold brew mocha. When she’s upset, she’ll settle with a blueberry cheese tart. On happier days, she’ll let him have the half of her brie sandwich. Briony has no idea how he does it; she’s only in awe when he recites her order, as if he has lived in her mind for years.

Both of them. 

Look, look, look. This is what happens when you put two competitive idiots together, who have pledged to outsmart the other ever since the day they first crossed paths. Sure, it’s pretty given that Nyx is well-versed with all the dirty talk, the suggestive conversation, all that amorous exchange. He has a fucking PhD in this department. But Briony? Good god. Sure, she’s shy and awkward and may seem incapable to pull off Nyx’s tricks, but what surprises him is that she’s a fast learner. And she uses the same tricks on him, but even better. 

So you can imagine a summer night at Yamachang’s, while Briony is talking to Crowe, Nyx would whisper in her ear something like, “I can’t wait to take you home so I can fuck your brains out,” and Briony only looks at him with a harmless smile. Nyx thinks she has no comeback, but he is wrong. Briony leaves the table, buys one of the limited popsicles Yamachang sells on his ice cream cart. She returns and peels off the plastic, makes a firm eye contact with Nyx. She makes sure that he’s watching her as she licks the popsicle slowly, sucking it with a pop. She would innocently ask the others, “You guys want some?” Then to Nyx’s ear, she would whisper, “To be honest, your dick tastes much better than this thing.” And by that time, Nyx already knows that he has lost in his own game.

20. What do their family/friends think of their relationship?

In general, their family/friends are supportive of their relationship because they have all witnessed not just how good they are together, but how good they are for each other. They’ve seen some changes: most of them have noticed how Nyx have been getting less involved with picking fights and getting into arguments with Luche or Tredd; they, too, have seen how Briony spends more time outdoors than being cooped up in her room. But I love to go a little extra and drill down to each of their circle of family/friends:

Nyx’s momma - Obviously, she adores Briony from the very first time she had met her during the Galahd operation. She’s aware how Briony’s such a good influence in her son’s life. But her adoration blooms into a heartfelt love and fondness when she finds out that Briony’s the reason why she’s getting more Facetime calls from Nyx. She didn’t mean to overhear that conversation in Nyx’s room, but she did. “You should call your mom often,” Briony tells her son. “That’s the least you can do for her. And she’s alone here. And you’re the only one she has left, so please for the love of the gods get your shit together.” She had to stifle her laughter as she sneaked away from the door. She never thought Briony—with that petite frame of hers, the shy smile, and quiet demeanor—could ever possess such a feistiness that can go against Nyx. Before, Mama Ulric could barely get in touch with Nyx, but now, the fact that Nyx is usually the one calling her is astounding. 

Cor - One might think that he’s one tough dad, and well… that is true. In a way. Most of the time, he likes to play it cool with Briony with all the dating shit, but Nyx is a different bastard to deal with. Cor enjoys intimidating Nyx for the heck of it, because he knows how this asshole have probably slept with half of the women in the Citadel. At least, that’s what Cor knows from the grapevine of gossip thanks to Dustin and Monica. So it’s natural for him to be protective of Briony. He has to be. So you can imagine his surprise when Nyx shows up in his office, wanting to ask Briony’s hand in marriage, and goes on a passionate speech on all the reasons why he wanted to marry Briony. Then he presents him the list. A fucking list. What a… Briony thing to do. Cor sees how Nyx is serious about his daughter. When he gives Nyx his word and he leaves, Cor might have shed a tear or two.

Libertus, Crowe, Pelna - Team Nyx, all the way. They have been dying to see this relationship blossom to what it is now for two years. This is the slow burn romance that the entire Kingsglaive crew has been waiting to happen. And it did. The alcohol fund is spent for a fucking celebration. You know this shit is real when Captain Drautos even contributes a couple of expensive hard liquor to mark the occasion.

Prompto, Noctis, Ignis - Adamant supporters of Team Gladio had to mourn in silence. But in any case, they’re supportive of Briony and Nyx. These three have not seen Briony this happy in a long time, and they are happy for her. Secretly, Prompto and Noctis have agreed to pull pranks on Nyx and to troll his circle of friends as an act of petty revenge. As seen in this.

Everyday Well, on a weekly basis, more or less three to four times a week. Though this would be different if they’re actively trying to get pregnant. Sam would faithfully follow Darcy’s cycle, and she even blocks evenings on his calendar during her ovulation period to remind him that he has someone to do, and that someone is her.
