Plus, to add to this, which group is capable of regulating/controlling their perceived "maleness" to their hearts content, and which group is not? When we talk about how transphobes consider bodies to be too "ruined by testosterone" to ever be women, who has the ability to make a choice upon the matter of how much to physically engage with the hormone, and who does not?

Arguably estrogen can "ruin" a body in a similar way to many people; can ruin their esteem and internal health and posture and perception of sexual role in the world... Saying that transmisogyny exists does not ignore that; it simply observes that— societally— the narrative is that testosterone is the primary destructive factor for ever being viewed as anything but male, and estrogen is not something that cis people care about past "ew soyboys, MEN (aka people seen as amab to society) should never be feminine even in any miniscule capacity".

The conversation about the effects of estrogen are often, in contrast to this, begging people not to "cut off their boobs" or whatever, begging people to preserve those feminized features. Both cis men and cis women barely think twice in most cases about "man boobs", and thus are not a complete barrier of entry to being perceived as a male. And yet any amount of testosterone in someone is what people consider to functionally bar them from femininity forever.

And this specifically applies to trans women, who did not grow up with a community of boys or girls to properly be socialized in either direction.

Most young trans women are barred from male spaces and friendships because we come off as "f*ggots" regardless of our attraction. The othership of being trans is something that men pick up on, (even if they cannot correctly identify) often even before you yourself do. You can try to be grossly over sexualized, make all the 'correct' derogatory remarks that will help you blend in, pretend to lust over straight sex even though you don't care and have no concept of it, and they will see right through you.

Most young trans women are barred from women's spaces due to going through a masculinizing puberty, estranging them from their once close female friends.

Most young trans women are barred from gay male spaces, because so many of those are focused on the appreciation of masculinity or overcoming the guilt and shame of loving someone of your own sex, and how the fuck are we supposed to do that in the midst of what is often the worst period of our lives? At the time, we do not love people our own sex; we do not even love ourselves! Even trans women who will turn out to be straight do not fit neatly into the dynamics of the group. Gay men see right through us no matter our attraction and don't know what to think except that we are somewhere else in the sexual spectrum from them. Lesbians view us as a possible threat. Other closeted trans women are to be avoided, as to not further deepen your role as a "f*ggot" to the few male friends you do have. You have nobody who even remotely understands.

Trans women grow up with a functional support network closer to zero than almost anyone else I can think of, and that is why we stick together like glue once we come out, and why we say so much that we have lost our entire childhoods and try to make up for it as well as we can. We don't even get to privately entertain the thought of being someone else, because we are trained that everyone sees right through us and will exclude us at the drop of a hat. Everything feminine must be avoided to keep any friends, and *somehow* you cannot bring yourself to engage with masculinity past a very surface or exaggerated level.

The idea that we can be "anything we want, forever" is absurd. We have seen that we can't. We know that we can't do that without being seen exactly as disgusting as we have felt or been seen our entire lives. We are seen as the ultimate subversion to the entire concept of gender because we choose to do what many see as the ultimate failure of our AGAB: to become a woman. And the worst thing that a man (in their eyes) can be is a woman. And the worst thing to be as a woman is someone who is disgusting to men, and/or feared as a predator or invading threat to other women. And we are seen as all of that.

This is the box that society puts us in without fail. Almost every single trans women knows what I mean by all of this. Trying to take AGAB out of the equation of the social definition transfemininity is to take us, the trans women, out of it as well. So pardon us when we are sick of hearing about how we just arent doing "gender abolition" well enough :/

if we want to talk about where trans men tend to be overrepresented in transphobic discourse, it’s in relation to scaremongering media profiles of detransitioners, framing trans men as misunderstood women with internalised misogyny who have mutilated our bodies and are now left ‘ruined’ because of HRT and surgery. This is used to argue for policies that restrict access to trans healthcare, especially for minors (notice how often we are talked about as “young girls”!) putting a ‘sympathetic’ face to transgender hysteria by talking about the “victims” of transgenderism. But this is still an incomplete picture without accounting for transmisogyny, as trans women are the “perpetrators” of this victimisation, convincing “confused young women” to cut off their breasts and take testosterone. It centres around the ‘corruption’ of femininity, as trans men forsake our ‘natural’ femaleness and trans women as ‘appropriating’ it.

This is why Matt Walsh, JKR, and other prominent transphobic figures asks the question “what is a woman?” and not “what is a man?”, it’s why Posie Parker advocates for armed cis men to go into women’s bathrooms to “protect women from men invading women’s spaces,” its why terfs are so fixated on trans women as ur-misogynists, it’s why right wing politicians like Pierre Poilievre & the Conservative Party of Canada focus their ire on blocking trans women from public spaces.

Saying this is not a denial of trans men as victims of transphobia (hello! I am a frequent one!) and its endlessly frustrating that these conversations get derailed into “well what about MY experience where XYZ horrible thing happened to me” as if the conversation about transphobia should only ever remain in the realm of interpersonal violence and victimisation. It’s very handy to stay in that arena because the only rebuttal to that tactic is to deny this random person’s experiences or “ignore their lived reality.” But I’m not talking about experience! Transphobia is a structural force in the world which means we don’t actually need to rely on individual accounts of violence to understand it. taking stock of that structure is only a “threat” to “trans masc voices” if you think structural discussions of oppression are de facto “misandrist”

T+2 days

the time has finally come, and we are now in a south pasadena airbnb where we'll stay for 18 days. what a whirlwind it has been! last week in NYC things:

met up shortly with S who walked me to dinner with T on fri

brunch at S&I's place on sat

hot pot with LG saturday night

packed/cleaned up the apartment and unmounted things on sunday

uyghur dinner with S&I (i thought brunch was the last time i would see them) on monday

torrisi with matt on tuesday

othership/first cold plunge experience with T on tuesday night

got raided by 4 movers on wednesday

SURPRISE visit by S on wednesday/move out day!

it was hard to say goodbye to our apartment. although the small space was really grating on me, i did spend a LOT of time in there, given covid and WFH. it was my first adult apartment and i put in a lot of effort to keep it well decorated and cozy.

now that we're in a one bedroom airbnb that has separation of space for kitchen, living room, and bedroom, it feels so nice! there is even a little outdoor patio area we can hang out in. it feels like such a luxury to have a designated space to work in (kitchen table). in our studio, my work desk was literally about 3-4 feet away from the foot of our bed. we can even eat at separate tables now! and we don't have to see/hear each other constantly even when we're both home! so nice!! LOL

apartment: last week, we finally signed for a two bedroom, 1.5 bath with a 13 month lease for $3085 starting in october. we decided to go with the same company as our nyc one. the price seemed quite costly to me initially, but given the amenities (in unit washer/dryer, central air, etc), and location, it didn't seem terrible in comparison to the other places on the market. #makingmydreamscometrue

work: i took 9/11 off work which is the day the movers came and we flew back to LA. on the plane, i was checking emails out of boredom, and i came across an email preview that read "Congrats Connie!" from my boss. i clicked into to see that i had received an equity increase! my boss had mentioned getting me some more money months ago, but i didn't expect it to come so soon. i am truly grateful to receive a 15% increase, especially when they just gave me a significant increase last year. the timing of it was perfect too, because i felt like this news welcomed me to LA.

this puts me at almost 6 figures, and i can finally say i will achieve it next year with the annual raise. with our increased fixed expenses (rent, utilities, car payment and car insurance), it feels good that we can technically survive off of my new income. thank you to the east coast/nyc work culture for increasing my work ethic, and thank you to matt and east coast friends who have influenced me and helped me gain confidence to work harder/achieve more in my career. i never imagined myself to be able to make this much money (but also, inflation, so it's not as impressive as it once was lol).

i didn't have to bring up A to my previous boss I, because we now are having meetings with the 3 of us. i now know that I knows how slow A is, so i don't want to talk badly about her.

it's been an emotional few weeks. even now in LA, i'm adjusting to the pace, culture, and getting reacquainted with driving and family. will slowly start hitting up friends after getting settled in a bit more. on our first day back, i kinda started missing NYC/east coast and questioned if i made the right choice. i missed the hustle, the drive, walkability, and go-getter attitudes. i also felt guilty about 'abandoning' my friend S. we stopped meeting as often in the past year due to schedules/busyness, but she made a lot of effort to see me many times in the last month. i hope this distance gives the space for our friendship to evolve and not decay.

today, i woke up today to the sound of chirping birds and have had healthy doses of vitamin D. i squirrel and bird watched from the patio. and drank some great milk tea. will document more about transitioning back to LA as the weeks go on.
