Does art make a difference?

Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.

Should politics and art mix?

Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.

Is your work for the many or for the few?

That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.

If you were world leader, what would be your first law?

Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.

Who would be your top advisers?

Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.

What, if anything, would you censor?

Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.

If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?

Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?

What are the rules that you live by?

Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.

Ronald Milner (May 29, 1938 – July 9, 2014) was a playwright. His play Checkmates, starring Paul Winfield and Denzel Washington, ran on Broadway.

He grew up on Hastings Street, known as “Black Bottom”. It had “Muslims on the corner, hustlers and pimps on another, winos on one, and Aretha Franklin singing from her father’s church on the other”, said Geneva Smitherman, author of Black World. He would tell David Richards in a Washington Star interview: “The more I read in high school, the more I realized that some tremendous, phenomenal things were happening around me. What happened in a Faulkner novel happened four times a day on Hastings Street. I thought why should these crazy people Faulkner writes about seem more important than my mother or my father or the dude down the street. Only because they had someone to write about them. So I became a writer.” He attended Northeastern High School. He attended Highland Park Junior College and Detroit Institute of Technology.

He won the John Hay Whitney Foundation fellowship to help aid him to complete a novel, “Life With Father Brown,” which remains unpublished. He went to New York City to join Harvey Swados’s writing workshop at Columbia University. Under the mentorship of Langston Hughes, he was able to get a Rockefeller Foundation grant.

His first break came with Who’s Got His Own. The play begins with the funeral of a harsh father, Tim Bronson, and ends with a tentative rebirth for his long-suffering widow and his embittered son and daughter, Tim, Jr., and Clara. The unsuspected truths that Mrs. Bronson is driven to reveal about their father ultimately enable Tim and Clara to see the real lives of their parents, as painful as it is. The expression that has historically been thwarted, which is primarily at the core of the play, is the question of black manhood. The protagonist is a highly combative and alienated son, torn by despair over ever being able to respect or love a father he has long since written off as a fierce tyrant at home and a coward at work. The show toured colleges in New York before going to the Lafayette Theatre. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

The Serial killer Thomas Neill Cream was born on May 27th 1850 in Glasgow.

The Cream family emigrated to Canada in 1854. His father, William, became the manager of a lumber and shipbuilding firm in Quebec and was successful enough to send Thomas to McGill University in Montreal.

At McGill, Thomas studied medicine with an emphasis on pharmaceuticals. He graduated in 1876 after completing a thesis on the effects of chloroform. After getting a woman pregnant and then aborting the fetus, he took off for England the day after marrying the unfortunate lady. He continued his medical studies in London and Edinburgh before returning to Canada where he carried on a lucrative business in providing abortions.

In late 1878 he returned to Canada and set up practice in London, Ontario, where he was implicated in the murder of a new patient, Kate Gardener. Gardener was unmarried and pregnant at the time and had gone to Cream for an abortion, she was later found dead in a nearby woodshed which smelled strongly of chloroform. At her inquest, Cream admitted having been consulted by Gardener but said he had refused to help with the abortion and suggested she must have taken her own life. He alleged that she was pregnant by a prominent local businessman. As there was no bottle found near the corpse, and the face was badly scratched as though she had been trying to remove a mask or pad, the inquest ruled that she had been murdered.

Cream was not tried due to insufficient evidence. However, his reputation was ruined, and he moved shortly afterwards to Chicago to practice as a physician. He was based near a red light district and offered terminations to prostitutes. He was quickly suspected by the Chicago police of being an illegal abortionist. In 1880 he was charged with the death of an abortion patient, Mary Ann Faulkner, but escaped prosecution through lack of evidence.

Cream also marketed his own anti-pregnancy pills and one patient, Ellen Stack, died of strychnine poisoning. Again, Cream was not brought to justice through lack of evidence. In 1881 he almost got away with poisoning Daniel Stott, a patient whose wife he had seduced. But Cream felt compelled to contact the District Attorney, maintaining that the chemist who had made up the pills he had prescribed for Stott had added strychnine to them. When the District Attorney ordered the exhumation of Stott’s body, it was found to contain strychnine and the finger of suspicion pointed at Cream not the blameless chemist leading him to be charged with murder. At his trial he received a life sentence but as a result of bribery he ended up serving only ten-year prison term in Illinois’ Joliet State Penitentiary.

On his release in July 1891 and after a brief period in Canada with his relatives he moved back to the Britain. From September 1891 he lodged at 103 Lambeth Palace Road, London, where he resumed his deadly career. Despite a three-month trip back to Canada, in the six months to 12 April 1892 he murdered four prostitutes: Ellen Dosworth, Matilda Clover, Emma Shrivell and Alice Marsh. Going under the name of Dr Neill of St Thomas’ Hospital, and wearing his usual attire of a top hat and a silk lined cloak, Cream would befriend his victims and offer medication laced with strychnine, supposedly to clear up rashes or spots.

However, Cream again incriminated himself. He blamed the murders on Walter Harper, a medical student and fellow lodger, and wrote to Harper’s father demanding £150 to destroy some supposed evidence. He also pestered the police with his theories as to the identity of the murderer and even wrote under different pseudonyms to a coroner implicating Harper and Frederick Smith M.P. Smith also received a letter asking for £3,000 to destroy some supposed evidence.

Other blackmail letters were sent to Dr William Broadbent of Portland Square and Lord Russell. Cream, using his false name Neill, got chatting with a former New York Detective John Haynes at a photographic studio. Haynes became worried by the amount of detail that Cream was relaying about the murders, including the names of two victims who had not been associated with the poisonings. The next day Haynes spoke to his Metropolitan Police friend Inspector Patrick McIntyre about Neill/Cream.

Subsequently Cream was followed and the police sent enquiries to Canada and Chicago. One of the ‘new’ victims mentioned by Neill/Cream was a woman called Louise Harvey. However, Harvey was not dead – she had sensed that there was something wrong with Cream and had pretended to swallow the pills he had given her.

Cream was initially charged with attempted extortion and a mass of evidence, including seven bottles of strychnine, was collected from his lodgings. He was eventually charged with the murder of Matilda Harper. The jury took only 12 minutes to establish his guilt and he was hanged on 15 November 1892.

There is an unsubstantiated claim that seconds before the trap door opened and Cream made the last drop he confessed to being Jack the Ripper but he was in a Canadian prison at the time of those murders, this hasn't stopped his name being constantly linked with the murders. Their theory is a bit far fetched, apparently he had a doppelganger serving his sentence in Canada!

                                           B I O G R A P H Y

When Britain declared war on Nazi Germany on September the 1st in 1939, Harvey Faulkner, an aspiring doctor, was called to arms to fight for his country. With his medical background, Harvey was enlisted as one of the medics in his platoon. Deployed overseas for years, Harvey tended to the wounds of his fellow militiamen for years during the war, before perishing himself during Operation Overlord at the invasion of Normandy on the 6th of June, 1944. After the war and a year after Harvey had died, he was honored the Distinguished Service Cross, in recognition of his gallantry and service to his country.

While most people’s lives end in death, Harvey Faulkner was an exception to the rule. Brought back to the land of the living by a supernatural organization that referred to themselves as ‘The Elders’ he was given the opportunity to continue doing the good work he had done during his past life, not as a human, but as a whitelighter. Guiding the young and inexperienced supernatural would be his task and Harvey excelled at his newly adopted path unlike any other whitelighter. That is, until he was appointed his charge Rosalie Youngblood.

Rosalie Youngblood was in the prime of her young adulthood. Young, beautiful, kind and above all: benevolent. She’d definitely caught the eyes of the Elders, just like Harvey had all those years ago. Rosalie was a future whitelighter, and it was Harvey’s job to grow close to her an ensure she continued forward on the right path she was on. Harvey went above and beyond, as far as his duties were concerned. Not only did he grow close to her – he actually fell completely and utterly in love with her. His relationship towards Rosalie clouded his judgement and caused him to neglect his other charges.

This negligence, and the breaking of a key rule the Elders decree their whitelighters to stick to – to not fall in love with their charges – caused Harvey to lose his right to watch over charges. Instead, Harvey was sent to Clearbrook Academy. Exiled for his bad behavior and forbidden to see Rosalie or any of his other charges ever again. He’s been here for roughly ten years now, as the school’s nurse, tending to any wounds or ailments the students may be suffering from. 

                                           P E R S O N A L I T Y

Harvey’s kind, caring and selfless nature were key traits that caught the attention of the Elders in the first place, which led them to consider him a proper candidate for a future whitelighter. As a medic in World War II, growing protective of those in his care has become instinctive to him. There are times where he tends to go overboard, but his intentions are always good. From a distance, people refer to Harvey as the 'perfect man’. The kind of man you would be delighted to introduce to your parents. But Harvey knows better than to entertain such ideas to any of the students. The war hardened him to a certain degree where he is able to compartmentalize his feelings in a way that they don’t disrupt his every day life.

He’s very conservative about his past and doesn’t prefer to shed any light on it, all too aware of his mistakes. Harvey is very inflexible and has a tendency to be quite resentful. Growing up in the 20’s and going through war changed him in certain ways that make him feel a little out of place in the present. Harvey still values many of the ideals and principles he was taught by his own parents, even if they’re a little outdated compared to the values children are taught nowadays. While most have a very realistic view on life, Harvey’s perspective tends to be a bit more romantic. He believes in the goodness of people, passion and second chances. These beliefs, while noble, also make him slightly naive at times.

fictional characters you relate to?

typically I'm drawn to characters who lean a little toward the melodramatic or struggle to articulate their feelings/emotions (sometimes fighting tooth and nail against emotional vulnerability) because I see aspects of my worst tendencies in them, but they're very often good/decent/caring people at heart and that's...reassuring? also, anyone who pretends to be a worn-out cynic (but isn't)

book you can read over and over without getting tired of?

echoing eve with the english patient (a true favorite), pretty much any poetry anne carson has written, the master and margarita, the ladies of grace adieu (I can't honestly say that I could or would want to read jonathan strange over and over because it's fucking enormous), a rose for emily (or any of faulkner's short stories), most tenneseee williams plays (but particularly the glass menagerie and cat on a hot tin roof)

what’s your favorite comfort show/movie?

hmm...spirited away, coraline, gravity falls, and over the garden wall are high on the list. I sometimes put on the pilot of twin peaks if I'm feeling really low because coop and those douglas firs make me smile. also, british comedy! i.t. crowd, spaced, and black books are life-savers, tbh.

which fictional character are you most defensive over?

I think eve's reply is in sync with my own - there's not a specific character I feel defensive of or want to use as a talking point, but generally the attitude toward and analysis of fictional women is uh...Bad

show you fell out of love with?

not sure I was very deeply in love with it, but I did watch gotham for a bit and wasn't keen on the direction it was taking (tho I think if it had just been 'harvey, jim, and alfred get drinks at a bar and then try to cook hollandaise' I would have been devoted for several seasons). also, american gods felt a bit disappointing but I did like the casting quite a lot

my list of 'to-watch someday' shows include: riverdale (mostly for madchen amick tbh), fargo (is it as good as the movie?), and dirk gently's holistic detective agency

what’s your aesthetic?

since I'm not sure whether this is about my writing aesthetic or my personal/fashion aesthetic, I'll just give both. I love trying to find a spot somewhere between poetry and prose in fiction, and I'm definitely still working on/toward this. I've no idea how to apply it to anything lengthy, but then, the writers I admire who manage to blend the two haven't written anything very lengthy, so I suppose it doesn't really lend itself to long novels. in fashion, I guess 'girl who doesn't own pumps but has twenty shades of lipstick' is my ~brand, as well as 'lusts-after-nice-button-downs-at-madewell' (my argonian name) and 'why can't I wear chelsea boots to your event???'

favorite fanfic tropes?

when both parties are desperately and achingly in love with each other but - due to insecurity, doubt, poor communication, etc etc - they keep fucking it up (in misery), until the situation reaches a breaking point. I live for drama

The history of Detroit has changed vastly over the past century. It has faced countless moments of hardships and injustice, economic and political ups and downs, but a sense of optimism and pride for the city remains in the hearts of many of those who live here. Our goal with this film was to create a conversation around the disproportionate effect of COVID-19 on Detroit and African Americans, and the spirit that held on, even as the worst pandemic in modern history ravaged it's neighborhoods. The production for this film began during the height of quarantine at the beginning of May, but during our editing process of this film, George Floyd was killed by police. Sparked by the unjust brutality that Mr. Floyd faced, and fueled by the on-going systemic racism & police murders of Black people in this country, the Black Live Matter Movement swept across the globe. As storytellers we decided to pivot our film and broaden the message beyond the pandemic and speak to all the injustices African Americans face as whole, and how the city of Detroit embraced the movement and demanded change and justice. This piece and message wouldn’t have been possible without the meaningful leadership and support from Detroit Producer Bre’ann White, and Writer Mic Phelps. Thank you for guiding us in documenting this story. On the website you can find resources and support for those affected by COVID-19, as well as organizations and resources related to learning about and supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement. Our film was intended to both document the lived experiences of real people in our neighborhoods, as well as provide a glimmer of hope when it felt like it was needed most. To inspire a sense of togetherness and faith that we could come out on the other side of this pandemic moving towards a world that is better and more equal than the one we left behind. We wanted this film to create positive and productive conversations around the protests that are happening across the world, and to help uplift a movement that will make a permanent change, must, make a change - because Black Lives Matter.

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots who fought in WWII. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Forces. The name applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel.

All African American military pilots who trained in the US trained at Moton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and were educated at Tuskegee University. The group included five Haitians from the Haitian Air Force and one pilot from Trinidad. It included a Hispanic or Latino airman born in the Dominican Republic.

Mesha Caldwell is believed to be the first reported murder of a transgender person in 2017. She worked in Canton, Mississippi as a popular hair and makeup artist, and her friend and former roommate said that she was “a happy person who loved everyone and never met a stranger”. She was murdered at age 41 on January 4th.

She was found shot to death on the side of the road. Her friends believe the homicide was motivated by her trans identity. She was misgendered and dead-named in the initial media reports. No one was arrested for her murder.

Sean Ryan Hake was shot by an officer outside of his home on January 6th. The officers were responding to a call from Sean’s mother saying that he was acting suicidal and violent. He got out of his car with blood running down his arms, and told the officers that they would have to kill him. He advanced towards the officers, who shot him three times. The 23 year old had been involuntarily committed in the past due to suicidal incidents, and the lawsuit filed by Sean’s mother states that the police should have recognized his instability.

None of the officers involved were identified by media or the police administration, and the District Attorney did not press charges. The officers were given administrative leave for a short period. Various media outlets misgendered and dead-named Sean.

Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow was found dead in her apartment in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on January 6. She may have been murdered as early as January 1st. She was 28 years old and an active member of the Oglala Lakota tribe, and participated in the Sioux Falls Two-Spirit and Allies group. She worked in customer service and had just begun to study nursing, and spent her free time at the library. Jamie had supported and motivated other trans people in her community throughout her life, and encouraged everyone she knew to be proud of themselves.

Joshua LeClaire was arrested in connection with her death, and later charged with her murder. Police saw him on the security footage from January 1st at Jamie’s apartment, entering at 3:30 am and leaving at 4:40 am, throwing blood stained clothes into the trees outside the parking lot. Jamie’s body was stabbed seven times.

Jojo Striker was shot dead in an empty parking garage in Toledo, Ohio on February 8th. Initial reports of her death misgendered the 23 year old. No information was brought to light about a motive or suspect, but the murder was investigated as a hate crime. Very little information is known about this crime, and the investigation was ended soon after it began.

Jojo’s mother misgendered and dead-named her to the media, and said they had not spoken in over a year, but acknowledged the hateful nature of the crime.

Tiara Richmond was shot and killed on February 21st in Englewood, Illinois, just south of Chicago. She got into a car with a man who later shot her and fled. Her friends reported that she was supposed to go on a date with this man, and was more than likely murdered once he realized her trans identity. Her friends said that she “was the life of the party” and loved to dance. Her siblings loved and respected her for who she was, and held a vigil to celebrate Tiara’s life. She was misgendered and dead-named in the initial local media reports.

This specific area of Chicago has been dangerous for trans women, and in 2012 two women were murdered on the same street as Tiara. The man who murdered Tiara has not been brought to justice.

Chyna Gibson, better known by her stage name Chyna Doll Dupree, was a beloved stage performer in New Orleans, killed at 31 years old. She was well known within the ballroom community across the nation, and often toured for her work. She was shot 8 to 10 times outside a shopping center. Several videos of her performances are on youtube, and her popularity as a drag performer and confident transgender woman are likely motivators of her murder.

Her community recognizes this as a hate crime but police have been reluctant to do so, and have made no arrests in the case of her murder.

Ciara McElveen was murdered on February 27th in New Orleans, the second murder of a trans woman there in a three day span. She was 25 years old, and had been released from prison for a battery charge just days before. She had gotten clean and sober during her four months in prison, and was feeling positive about her life and opportunities, according to her surrogate aunt. Her family had rejected her because of their religion, but she had gained a group of supporters and surrogate family members in New Orleans because of her outgoing personality. She had often complained to her aunt about the danger of the streets, especially for transgender women.

Witnesses told police that a man pulled up to a street corner with Ciara in the passenger seat, got out of the car, opened the passenger door, stabbed her, threw her body out of the car, slammed her face into the ground, and drove away. Officers arrived at the scene on the morning on the 27th to find Ciara lying on the pavement with multiple stab wounds. She died later that day at the hospital. No arrests have been made for her murder, and police were reluctant to admit that this was a hate crime.

Jaquarrius Holland, an 18 year old living in Monroe, Louisiana, was murdered on February 19. Police say she was shot after an argument with Malcom Harvey, and arrested him in late march. He was charged with Second degree murder. Louisiana has been a hotspot for transgender crime for years, and Jaquarrius was the third transgender woman murdered in the state in two weeks.

Jaquarrius did not live with her parents and often moved around and stayed with various friends for short periods of time. She was misgendered. Because she was misgendered and dead-named in initial reports by the media and her family, those close to her did not hear about her death for days afterwards. They were shocked to hear that she had been murdered. HRC and other LGBT organizations did not report on her death until February 28th, when her close friends finally were able to get her actual story to the media.

Alphonza Watson was shot in the stomach and died in Baltimore, Maryland on March 22nd. She was 38 years old, and her mother said that she was fun to be around and close to the lord. She worked as a top salesperson at a Virginia retail chain, and because of her previous arrests related to sex work, it is likely that her murder was one of many instances of violence against transgender sex workers in particular, however police did not investigate it as a hate crime.

She was shot by two men who fled the scene. The neighborhood was canvassed by police, but no one was brought to justice.

Chay Reed was killed in Miami on April 21st. She was shot in the stomach while crossing the street, and her murderer fled the scene. Her longtime friend said everyone referred to her as “Juicy” or “Mama”, and that everyone knew her for her dancing skills. Her mother said Juicy had complained of being harassed daily for her gender.

Police misreported her gender to the media, so she was initially misgendered in the reports of her death. Her murderer has not been identified and the crime was not dealt with as a hate crime.

Kenneth Bostick was struck in the back of the head with a metal object in Manhattan on April 25th. The attack was unprovoked, and he lay on the sidewalk for half an hour before being taken to the hospital. The 59 year old later died of his injuries. The media misreported his gender in initial reports, saying that he was a transgender woman before respecting his life as a trans man.

Joseph Griffin was arrested and charged with manslaughter and criminal mischief for the attack. Bostick was among the most marginalized groups in society, facing the homelessness and unemployment that as many as one in five transgender people in America experience during their lives.

Sherrell Faulkner was found by a dumpster close to death after an attack last November. She died on May 16th of a traumatic brain injury. After her death the police began to investigate the assault as a homicide, but would not respond to comment on whether or not they’re treating it as a hate crime. No one has been brought to justice for this attack.

The 46 year old was killed in what is known to be an LGBT-friendly area of Charlotte, North Carolina. Her family and local news outlets misgendered and dead-named her both after her initial assault and her death.

Kenne McFadden was killed in San Antonio and her body was thrown into the river. She was murdered on April 9th, but police did not announce that her death was a homicide until June 6th. They misgendered her and mistook her death for a drowning. San Antonio police say that they have a person of interest but the suspect is currently incarcerated for another crime.

Kenne was a 27 year old server at a local restaurant and always posted singing videos on facebook.

Kendra Marie Adams was found dead on a construction site with burns on her body on June 13th in Ithaca, New York. Michael Davis was charged with second-degree murder and arson, and police say that the act was premeditated based on the evidence at his home.

Kendra was also known by her stage name, Kimbella Rosé, and helped found a drag troupe in Ithaca called the House of Merlot. She was a popular performer, “a proud trans woman of color”, and mourned on a large scale by her chosen family.

Ava Le’Ray Barrin was shot in the stomach by Jalen Brown during a verbal altercation on June 25th in Athens, Georgia. At 17 years old, she is the youngest known transgender murder victim this year. Brown cited self defense, but witness testimony and other evidence resulted in his charge of murder and aggravated assault. Ava was misgendered and dead-named by law enforcement and media outlets.

She had come out to her closest friends and loved ones, and had dreams of moving to Los Angeles to model. She was a “brave young woman who feared nothing, nobody, and especially not being herself.”

Ebony Morgan was shot multiple times on July 2nd in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. Kenneth Kelley Jr fled the scene before the police arrived and was arrested in October for the 28 year old’s murder.

Authorities referred to Ebony by her dead name and misgendered her in initial reports, and local news outlets are continuing to do so as more information is uncovered.

TeeTee Dangerfield was shot and killed on July 31st in Atlanta. She was found with gunshot wounds inside of her car in the early morning, when she was then taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The 32 year old worked as a server and had recently become a union shop steward. She had just bought a home and was known by her colleagues to be responsible and hardworking.

Tyrone Kemp has been arrested and charged with malice murder. He did not admit to the crime when he was first arrested but admitted to meeting with her before her death.

Gwynevere River Song was shot in their home on August 12th in Waxahachie, Texas. An argument escalated into violence, and police arrived on the scene to find Gwynevere’s body along with an injured adult. Although local news outlets misgendered and dead-named the 26 year old initially, their mother worked to correct this and worked closely with Trans Advocacy Groups in Dallas for the memorial service.

Kiwi Herring was shot and killed in St. Louis, Missouri by police on August 22nd. She was a 30 year old married mother of three children. The police were responding to a call from a neighbor about a domestic violence incident, a neighbor who Kiwi has reported in the past for hateful harassment. Once officers arrived on the scene, there was an altercation in which an officer was injured along with the neighbor, and Kiwi was shot multiple times.

She has been described by those who knew her as a mother to the neighborhood, who loved to cook and care for her family and friends.

Kashmire Nazier Redd was fatally stabbed by his partner in Gates, NY on September 5th. The 28 year old and his partner Doris Carrasquillo had an argument in the early morning in their apartment. Their neighbor heard the scene and watched as Kashmire stumbled outside and collapsed on the lawn.

Carrasquillo has been arrested and charged for second degree murder.

Derricka Banner was shot to death in a car early in the morning of September 12th in Charlotte, North Carolina. Local news reports misgendered and dead-named Derricka.

Montavious Berry was later arrested and charged with her murder. This is his third arrest in two years. Local police say that Derricka and Berry had communicated in the past and had talked earlier that morning to arrange a sexual encounter, after which Berry killed her. Berry had told Derricka to come alone, but she insisted that her friend come, who then hid in the trunk of the car and heard her friend yell “Don’t point it at me like that” before hearing two gunshots.

Scout Schultz committed suicide by police on September 16th on the Georgia Tech Campus. They left three suicide notes in their dorm room, and made a call to the police about seeing a suspicious and armed person, describing themselves and their own outfit. Police arrived and found Scout on campus, where they yelled for the officers to shoot them, and they eventually did.

The 21 year old had been battling mental illness for years, and was pushed to the edge of desperation, where they were aided in their suicide by police. They had been involved in many different causes on campus, and led the university’s Pride Alliance.

Ally Lee Steinfeld was gruesomely murdered at her girlfriend’s house on September 14th in Kansas City, Missouri. The girlfriend, Briana Calderas, is one of three people charged with first-degree murder for this crime. Ally, just 17 years old, had begun dating Calderas only a week before she was killed. Calderas, along with two friends, wanted Ally dead and mentioned this days before the crime. They attempted to poison her, and when she didn’t drink the liquid they gouged out her eyes and stabbed her genitals before burning the body. The investigators insist that this was not a hate crime, but this does not explain the intentional mutilation of Ally’s genitals.

Stephanie Montez was shot to death in Robstown, Texas on September 28th. She was 47 years old, and her longtime friend said that she had a great outlook on life, an incredibly sweet woman who loved to dance and often performed in drag shows.

Because authorities and local media initially misgendered Stephanie, it wasn’t until days after her death that local advocates became aware of her identity. She was referred to disrespectfully as “a man in a dress” by local police reports. Respect her identity, respect her life.

Candace Towns of Macon, Georgia was found dead on October 31st after being reported missing two days prior. The 30 year old had been shot to death and was found lifeless.

Initially the media misgendered and dead-named Candace until friends and family corrected them. Her good friend said that she was known for her generosity.

Jaylow McGlory was shot multiple times on August 4th in Alexandria, Louisiana. Little is known about the circumstances surrounding her murder, as it happened in her home.

Desmond Harris has been charged with second-degree murder. Early media reported misgendered Jaylow, even going far enough to say that initial reports by the police stating that the 29 year old was a woman were incorrect, and repeating her dead-name multiple times.

Anthony Torres, known locally as Bubbles, was fatally shot on September 10th outside a San Francisco club that he frequently played at. Bubbles was an activist, artists, and performer, known around the area for his involvement in the LGBT and electronic music scenes. His personality was well known, and mourned by his community. No information is known about a suspect in the murder. Bubbles’ attorney insists that this was a hate crime, but police appear reluctant to agree.

The Scottish born serial killer  Thomas Neill Cream was born on May 27th 1850 in Glasgow.

The Cream family  emigrated to Canada in 1854. His father, William, became the manager of a lumber and shipbuilding firm in Quebec and was successful enough to send Thomas to McGill University in Montreal.

At McGill, Thomas studied medicine with an emphasis on pharmaceuticals. He graduated in 1876 after completing a thesis on the effects of chloroform.  After getting a woman pregnant and then aborting the fetus, he took off for England the day after marrying the unfortunate lady. He continued his medical studies in London and Edinburgh before returning to Canada where he carried on a lucrative business in providing abortions. 

In late 1878 he returned to Canada and set up practice in London, Ontario, where he was implicated in the murder of a new patient, Kate Gardener. Gardener was unmarried and pregnant at the time and had gone to Cream for an abortion, she was later found dead in a nearby woodshed which smelled strongly of chloroform. At her inquest, Cream admitted having been consulted by Gardener but said he had refused to help with the abortion and suggested she must have taken her own life. He alleged that she was pregnant by a prominent local businessman. As there was no bottle found near the corpse, and the face was badly scratched as though she had been trying to remove a mask or pad, the inquest ruled that she had been murdered.

Cream was not tried due to insufficient evidence. However, his reputation was ruined, and he moved shortly afterwards to Chicago to practice as a physician. He was based near a red light district and offered terminations to prostitutes. He was quickly suspected by the Chicago police of being an illegal abortionist. In 1880 he was charged with the death of an abortion patient, Mary Ann Faulkner, but escaped prosecution through lack of evidence. Cream also marketed his own anti-pregnancy pills and one patient, Ellen Stack, died of strychnine poisoning. Again, Cream was not brought to justice through lack of evidence. In 1881 he almost got away with poisoning Daniel Stott, a patient whose wife he had seduced. But Cream felt compelled to contact the District Attorney, maintaining that the chemist who had made up the pills he had prescribed for Stott had added strychnine to them. When the District Attorney ordered the exhumation of Stott’s body, it was found to contain strychnine but the finger of suspicion pointed at Cream not the blameless chemist and he was charged with murder. At his trial he received a life sentence but as a result of bribery he ended up serving only ten-year prison term in Illinois’ Joliet State Penitentiary.

On his release in July 1891 and after a brief period in Canada with his relatives he moved back to the UK. From September 1891 he lodged at 103 Lambeth Palace Road, where he resumed his deadly career. Despite a three-month trip back to Canada, in the six months to 12 April 1892 he murdered four prostitutes: Ellen Dosworth, Matilda Clover, Emma Shrivell and Alice Marsh. Going under the name of Dr Neill of St Thomas’ Hospital, and wearing his usual attire of a top hat and a silk lined cloak, Cream would befriend his victims and offer medication laced with strychnine, supposedly to clear up rashes or spots. However, Cream again incriminated himself. He blamed the murders on Walter Harper, a medical student and fellow lodger, and wrote to Harper’s father demanding £150 to destroy some supposed evidence. He also pestered the police with his theories as to the identity of the murderer and even wrote under different pseudonyms to a coroner implicating Harper and Frederick Smith M.P. Smith also received a letter asking for £3,000 to destroy some supposed evidence. Other blackmail letters were sent to Dr William Broadbent of Portland Square and Lord Russell. Cream, using his false name Neill, got chatting with a former New York Detective John Haynes at a photographic studio. Haynes became worried by the amount of detail that Cream was relaying about the murders, including the names of two victims who had not been associated with the poisonings. The next day Haynes spoke to his Metropolitan Police friend Inspector Patrick McIntyre about Neill/Cream. Cream was followed and the police sent enquiries to Canada and Chicago. One of the ‘new’ victims mentioned by Cream was a woman called Louise Harvey. However, Harvey was not dead – she had sensed that there was something wrong with Cream and had pretended to swallow the pills he had given her.

Cream was initially charged with attempted extortion and a mass of evidence, including seven bottles of strychnine, was collected from his lodgings. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Matilda Harper. The jury took only 12 minutes to establish his guilt and he was hanged on 15 November 1892. There is an unsubstantiated claim that seconds before the trap door opened and Cream made the last drop he confessed to being Jack the Ripper but he was in a Canadian prison at the time of those murders, this hasn't stopped his name being constantly linked with the murders.  Their theory is a bit far fetched, apparently he had a doppelganger serving his sentence in Canada!
