DRAINING THE SWAMP

Oswald Mosley was considered to be the most able politician of the 1920s, a Labour Prime Minister in-waiting. What caused a changed direction for this man, who then founded the right-wing British Union of Fascists, renowned for street violence and antisemitism?

Meet Sir Oswald and Lady Diana Mosley who were given a short, sharp portrait in the BBC Peaky Blinders series. Exploring the life and activities of the Fascist leader, from the 1930's to 1960's, discover the private personas behind the Fascist leader and his unorthodox wife, both vilified and adored in their lifetimes.

Was he the thuggish villain he is portrayed as? Was he deluded, dangerous or visionary? How critical was Diana's supporting role? Draining the Swamp unpicks the intentions behind the dangerous and controversial activities that Mosley led, inviting judgement about his legacy, and raising questions about parallels with contemporary British and American politicians. "I am going to fuck the swan tonight." As you all know, Oswald Mosley was a real person and a real fascist leader of the very real British Union of Fascists in 1932 - not 1929 just like in the show. Mosley wasn't a fascist from the beginning of his polítical career (which he started right after WWI): he switched between Conservatives, Independent Party, Labour party and the so called New party before founding the British Union of Fascists. He started without experience and was mainly voted because of his inherited baronetcy. He fell out with the Conservatives over Irish Policy - since he condemned the operations of the Black and Tans in Ireland against civilians. With growing popularity in Birmingham and whole England, he became a household name in fascist's circles. He met Benito Mussolini in 1931, and came back to England as an e en more convinced fascist. Mosley married his mistress Diana Guinness in secret in Germany on 6 October 1936 in the Berlin home of Germany's Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. Adolf Hitler was their guest of honour. The riot played out in the show was inspired by a real fight: The Yiddishers were a London street gang based in Whitechapel and were led by Alfie Solomon (for real). During the 1930s, they opposed the growing fascist movement in Great Britain and participated in an attack on members of the British Union of Fascists, later known as the Battle of Cable Street on 4 October 1936. Mosley had multiple affairs, which is also a little detail revealed in the show. After the Shelby family has dispersed into different directions and Tommy has been feeling rather depressed, the historic stock market crash of 1929 happens. Tommy has to take the reins and do business again. He orders Michael from the headquarters in Detroit back to Birmingham because he ignored Tommys orders and bought shares that brought only deficit. Meanwhile, Tommy’s political career is going from strength to strength; he gives a rousing speech in the House of Commons. Which brings up a new “frenemy”: Oswald Mosley, founder of the fascist party of Great Britain. Tommy has been suspicious that Michael Gray is betraying him. At a family meeting in the Garrison pub, Michael made a speech that the company should be restructured with him at the top. Their drug smuggling expansion in America made his role the most financially beneficial. He told Tommy that dealing with his contacts and Gina Gray’s family who don’t want to deal with a “razor gang”, he wants to expand the business in America. Tommy rejected the plan but Michael said he would pursue it anyway and split from his family. Polly Gray may join him as she handed in her resignation to the gangster. Michael’s new wife Gina soon reveals that she’s pregnant. Alfie Solomons is still alive. Tommy had not shot him dead but had just hurt him badly in the season four finale. Tommy ask for Alfie’s help to use some of his Jewish gangsters in London to cause a commotion at Mosley’s rally in Birmingham. He agrees for a price. Mosley made his speech while protesters from Alfie’s gang broke in to disturb the action. His war comrade Barney Thompson is in place, ready to shoot him dead but before he can he is shot in the head. Then just as Aberama Gold appeared to kill Jimmy McCavern, he was also stabbed to death.
