The Saint: The Fiction Makers - Part 1 (6.11, ITC, 1968)
"Mr. Klein, do you remember what SWORD did to the police sergeant in Sunburst Five?"
"Oh no..."
"The equipment is fully operational in the cellar, it can be filled with acid in one minute."
"Oh, you wouldn't!"
#the saint#the fiction makers#1968#leslie charteris#john kruse#roy ward baker#roger moore#sylvia syms#justine lord#kenneth j. warren#philip locke#tom clegg#nicholas smith#roy hanlon#caron gardner#peter ashmore#frank maher#graham armitage#richard franklin#oswald laurence#david rendall#rather surprising that it took the show this long to do a 2 parter; ITC had started playing with the format (two part eps that could be#stitched together for cinema release on the continent) back on The Baron‚ and it had become fairly standard practice by now. this was shot#as two eps and then stitched together (the other Saint film yet to come did the opposite) but per Network's dvd was never repeated in its#episodic format after first transmission (not even itv4 or tptv tend to include them) which might explain why the image does seem rather#badly degraded in places (particularly the credits of part 2). Syms and Lord were two of the most ubiquitous Saint guests with nearly a#dozen appearances between them so it's lovely they came back for this special outing; Syms in particular is the mvp here‚ having played#mostly upper class lady roles on the series to date she really seems to relish the chance to do something different as the ditzy and rather#loud (and most unserious) novelist Amos Klein‚ whose creations have been brought to life by an evil mastermind... yes it's all a bit silly#fun tho! honestly this is a fun time‚ and clearly not taking itself seriously at all

a lot of companions would be getting into tv show worthy situations with or without the doctor, but some of them are just normal people, who if they weren't aboard the tardis they'd be living an ordinary, perhaps even boring, life. who is the most normal

The story behind the “Mind the Gap” by Oswald Laurence.
sound on 🔉
The original “Mind the Gap” recorded by Laurence can only be heard nowadays at Embankment tube station on the northbound platform of the Northern line.
Oswald Laurence's voice was used on the northbound Northern Line but was phased out until only Embankment used it.
His wife Dr Margaret McCollum said she often uses the station and was devastated when "he wasn't there" one day. She was given a copy of the recording after TfL heard she went to Embankment after his death to hear his voice.
London Underground director Nigel Holness said: "Transport for London were approached by the widow of Oswald Laurence to see whether she could get a copy of the iconic 'mind the gap' announcement her husband made over 40 years ago. "We were very touched by her story, so staff tracked down the recording and not only were they able to get a copy of the announcement on CD for her to keep but are also working to restore the announcement at Embankment station."

OP perhaps you would enjoy some of these books:
Dragonfall by L.R. Lam - just came out last month, the first in an epic fantasy trilogy. Dragons have been banished to another realm while humans have turned to worshipping them as gods. One dragon falls through the veil between the worlds… and meets a human they fall in love with but also have to kill and it’s SO delicious
When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill - came out last year, stand-alone. What if angry women spontaneously transform into dragons when they’ve had enough? It isn’t as simple as that of course, anyone can dragon when experiencing a powerful emotion. This is about grief, healing, and queer community.
The Dominion of the Fallen trilogy by Aliette de Bodard - set in a post apocalyptic Paris ruled by fallen angels. One of the main characters is a Vietnamese dragon (the author is French-Vietnamese afaik) and there’s a romance arc between him and one of the fallen angels. De Bodard has also put out a few novellas after this that focuses on that relationship
Ballad of Sir Benfro by James Oswald - five book epic fantasy series all about dragons. The dragons are persecuted for the gems that grow in their brain so they’ve had to hide away from humans. Benfro, a teenage dragon, finds his fate tied with a human boy, a secret prince - the series is epic in a similar scope to game of thrones, where you have multiple characters pulling strings over a wide scale. Features a lot of welsh lore/mythology and if you know anything about sheep breeds you will be amused to find the villains are all named for sheep
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman is a fantasy duology where the main character is half dragon. Half dragons deal with a lot of prejudice very similar to transphobia, but this series has actual queer characters (including a trans half dragon). My favourite part is how the princess, prince, and main character pretty much end up in a triad at the end of the series lmao. Anyway she wrote a follow up YA book (series?) to this but I haven’t read that
Temeraire by Naomi Novik - look I know everyone and their mother know about this series by now, but I have to mention it. 9 book alternative history series which asks the question “what if napoleonic wars, but with dragons?” The dragons are all sentient and Temeraire in particular develops an anarcho-democratic streak which Laurence, being a proper regency gentleman has difficulties stomaching sometimes. This being alternative history it doesn’t follow what actually happened during the Napoleonic wars entirely. Hugely compelling though and I love Laurence and Temeraire so much
And finally an honourable mention goes to:
The Volstovic Cycle by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett - a 4 book high fantasy series in which there are metal dragons created by unhinged magicians in fantasy Russia-France to fight a war against fantasy Japan-China. Each book is different, the first one focuses on two storylines, one in the city with the dragon corps being rehabilitated by a grad student (they were rude and nearly caused a diplomatic incident) while something is up with the magic and the dragons, and the other storyline is about a magician exiled to his childhood countryside home for sleeping with a foreign prince. Sentient metal dragons: yes. Living breathing dragons: no.
I don't know about you guys but i really miss seeing "high fantasy" dragons in media, high fantasy dragons are like Smaug (The Hobbit), Draco (DragonHeart), Saphira (Eragon) and Spyro (Spyro the Dragon games franchise) for example, they have their own free will and cannot be controlled, they are highly intelligent and capable of speaking and even writing or drawing. It seems the version of dragons that has taken over is the animalistic and realistic version, that are basically huge dogs that can breath fire, bring back intellectual dragons that like to make riddles to fool intruders, bring back grumpy dragons that live isolated from everyone but they are actually lonely and in need of a friend, bring back the loyal and brave dragons that are willing to sacrifice themselves to save the ones they love, dragons that will talk to you about the mysteries of the world and the universe, JUST BRING BACK HIGH FANTASY DRAGONS GODDAMIT

Laurence Olivier in The Entertainer (Tony Richardson, 1960)
Cast: Laurence Olivier, Brenda de Banzie, Roger Livesey, Joan Plowright, Alan Bates, Daniel Massey, Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field, Thora Hird. Screenplay: John Osborne, Nigel Kneale, based on a play by Osborne. Cinematography: Oswald Morris. Art direction: Ralph W. Brinton. Film editing: Alan Orbiston. Music: John Addison.
Sleazy old Archie Rice was one of Laurence Olivier's theatrical triumphs, proof that a classical actor, renowned for his Hamlet and Oedipus and Coriolanus, could take on the "kitchen-sink realism" of an Angry Young Man, John Osborne, and add glory to his already celebrated name. But the film version is an example of the difficulties that have to be overcome when a play is translated into a movie. For even though Tony Richardson, who directed the 1957 Royal Court Theatre version, also directed the film, and the play's author did the screenplay as well (in collaboration with Nigel Kneale), the movie lacks energy. The play alternates between what's going on in Archie Rice's house and his performances on stage, whereas the film "opens up" to show the English seaside resort town where Archie's music-hall is located, and some of the events that are merely narrated in the play, such as Archie's affair with a young woman whose family he tries to persuade to back him in a new show, are dramatized in the movie. Olivier's creation of the "dead behind the eyes" Archie is superb, and his music-hall turns in the film manage to suggest that even though he was a hack as a performer Archie could have held an audience's attention, though it's clear that seeing Olivier on an actual stage would have had a stronger impact from sheer immediacy. The cast is uniformly fine: Brenda de Banzie as Archie's second wife, Roger Livesey as his father (Livesey was in fact only a year older than Olivier), Joan Plowright as his daughter, and making their film debuts, Alan Bates and Albert Finney as his sons. But in the end it's a collection of impressive performances in service of a not very involving story of a self-destructive man and his dysfunctional family.

[Image descriptions: a twitter thread by @garius "John Bull" which says "It is election season. The world is busy and rubbish.
But it is also Christmas.
So take a breather and let me tell you a story about London, trains, love and loss, and how small acts of kindness matter.
I'm going to tell you about the voice at Embankment Tube station.
Just before Christmas 2012, staff at Embankment Tube station were approached by a woman who was very upset.
She kept asking them where the voice had gone. They weren't sure what she meant.
The Voice?
The voice, she said. The man who says 'Mind the Gap'
Don't worry, the staff at Embankment said. The announcement still happens, but they've all been updated. New digital system. New voices. More variety.
The staff asked her if she was okay.
"That voice," she explained, "was my husband."
The woman, a GP called Dr Margaret McCollum, explained that her husband was an actor called Oswald Laurence. Oswald had never become famous, but he HAD been the chap who had recorded all the Northern Line announcements back in the seventies.
And Oswald had died in 2007.
Oswald's death had left a hole in Margaret's heart. But one thing had helped. Every day, on her way to work, she got to hear his voice.
Sometimes, when it hurt too much, she explained, she'd just sit on the platform at Embankment and listen to the announcements for a bit longer.
For five years, this had become her routine. She knew he wasn't really there but his voice - the memory of him - was.
To everyone else, it had just been another announcement. To HER it had been the ghost of the man she still loved.
And now even that had gone.
The staff at Embankment were apologetic, but the whole Underground had this new digital system, it just had to be done. They promised, though, that if the old recordings existed, they'd try and find a copy for her.
Margaret knew this was unlikely, but thanked them anyway.
In the New Year, Margaret McCollum sat on Embankment Station, on her way to work.
And over the speakers she heard a familiar voice. The voice of a man she had loved so much, and never thought she'd hear again.
"Mind the Gap" Said Oswald Laurence.
Because it turned out a LOT of people at Embankment, within London Underground, within @TfL and beyond had lost loved ones and wished they could hear them again.
And they'd all realised that with luck, just this once, for one person, they might be able to make that happen.
Archives were searched, old tapes found and restored. More people had worked to digitize them. Others had waded through the code of the announcement system to alter it while still more had sorted out the paperwork and got exemptions.
And together they made Oswald talk again.
And that is why today, even in 2019, if you go down to Embankment station in London, and sit on the northbound platform on Northern Line, you will here a COMPLETELY different voice say Mind the Gap to ANYWHERE else on the Underground.
It's Oswald.
Merry Christmas everyone."]
nothing makes me cry like the embankment tube station voiceover story !!! nothing !!!!!!!
