“I don’t really care who you are.” Muichirou didn’t even make eye contact when he spoke to Takayuki. Instead, he directed his glazed over eyes towards the sky. “As long as you don’t get in my way, it shouldn’t even matter.”
Takayuki had been insulted in worse ways. Yet he still felt a tick of annoyance at this boy’s blatant disregard for manners and dismissive attitude. Pushing that feeling away in favor of professionalism, Takayuki replied, “The feeling is mutual.” In his defense, the boy started it.
Two years later, Takayuki ran into Muichirou outside the room where a Pillar Meeting would soon be held. The boy was bandaged up from his battle in the swordsmiths’ village yet he still walked tall and proud. Takayuki stepped away from the door and gestured for Muichirou to enter first. Though a senior Pillar, the boy deserved to sit first given his physical state.
“What are you waiting for? Go in,” Takayuki said when Muichirou made no move to enter.
Instead of taking the invitation, Muichirou stated, “I should apologize for our introduction.”
“Ah, that?” Takayuki frowned. “I accept your apology. I, too, should take back what I—”
“Oh no, I don’t regret what I said. I was only apologizing.”
Takayuki’s neutral expression gave way to a slight frown. He looked at Muichirou and beheld sparkling eyes and an impish grin. So now the boy had learned how to be insolent on purpose?
“Now, I shall be taking my seat.” Muichirou walked past Takayuki. “Hurry up before people start calling you Osoyuki.”
Again, Takayuki felt an irksome tick. But something about this interaction was reminiscent…
“Big bro’s never gonna get married. Girls get scared like fish and he scares all the fish away!” A little boy with the same gray eyes as Takayuki exclaimed before laughing into his hands.
It could never be the same but the reminder was still comforting. Takayuki put the memory away with a sign and stepped in after Muichirou.
“You stayed quiet for so long and now you’re speaking only to insult me,” he said as he sat. “I think Kochou-san is a bad influence on you.”
“I picked up just as much from you,” Muchirou remarked, making Takayuki twitch.
Takayuki glared at the boy and Muichirou gave a playful smirk. Then, after a moment, their expressions gave way to gentle smiles. It was strange. But not unpleasant.
