Chapter 148 thoughts!
Oh wow, they let Miyako out! Sorry, not to bitter, but Miyako’s been such a non entity in the twins lives lately (despite taking Ichigo on for the single purpose of being there for Ruby) that it’s hard to even take her character seriously anymore. My suspension of disbelief that she’s even a character is broken now, she doesn’t feel real to me anymore.
I do however enjoy more Gotanda! He’s really had a resurgence as a presence in this series with this past arc and I think it’s one of the best things I can say about the movie arc. Gotanda feels like such a big part of this story that it felt weird not to see him arcs at a time (not like that’s a criticism I ever have regarding big characters in this series.
MINAMI! Girl, you just avoided a such a mess of an arc, god bless
(Taiki incest joke)
Days without Oshi no Ko having incest be the punchline of an unfunny joke: 0
(Diving Suit Frill)
Frill I love you.
(KanaKane moment)
Aaaaaaaaa I wanted this for so long! It’s been so long since they last talked let alone do something gay. Good for them, good for me!
(Aqua Akane scene)
God, these two are so weird. I like seeing him conflicted like this, but I’m more focused on what Akane says here,
“I’m sure Ruby got her revenge in the final act”
Now something that was discussed heavily during the airing of the movie arc was Ruby’s Decision. Whether or not to forgive her killing, the meaning behind “I can’t love you”, the whole intention and result hinges on Ruby playing Ai…
And then we didn’t get to see any of it. It was all behind our “Oscar’s speech is too long and theyre playing the music to get us off stage” montage with no significant answer for the audience.
We may get further context in the next arc, we SHOULD anyway, but there’s so many crucial scenes being off screened for no perceivable reason that I almost feel like I’m getting my hopes up.
Still, touching upon the subject again has me a bit optimistic. I’m just praying that the answers are worth all the smoke and mirrors we got last arc.
(Kana’s confession and concession)
Is it sad that I’m thrilled just to have any sort of development? On one hand, this is a huge moment for Kana’s character but on the other, he literally just told her that SHE always makes him feel better. Did she just forget that or does she have some other reasoning here?
Overall a pretty decent chapter. I feel like we’ve getting many like this lately, chapters that are good in isolation but are frustrating because of the arc around them. Praying that as we move into the next arc I’ll stop feeling that way.

Oshi No Ko Chapter 148 - My Thoughts/Analysis
I don’t think I’ve been more disappointed in an Oshi No Ko chapter as much as I have for Chapter 148, but there’s still some stuff to talk about despite said disappointment. As always, spoilers for Oshi No Ko Ch148 below.
A beach chapter??? After the absolute gut punches that were the last few chapters? No follow up to Aqua or Ruby or Hikaru at all???
Please explain to me why Minami is showing up here after being tossed like garbage for the past few dozen or so chapters? She hasn’t even been plot relevant in this arc! I know it’s because she’s connected to Ruby in some respects but if she’s not going to do anything interesting for the narrative why the hell is she even coming back to the spotlight? Really, I could say this about a bunch of side characters on the movie set but at least they actually showed up for the arc, even though they barely did anything that we could see.
Taiki mourning his car is a running gag that is funny but completely useless in the grand scheme of things. After the horrible pacing of this arc is this bit really necessary? No, and the fact that it still got pushed through when there are several other things to dwell on irks me. This is what side characters have been reduced to—comic relief.
Oh hey Gotanda! Been awhile since we’ve seen him at least. And once again Kana’s tongue strikes the director’s weak spot. Ouch. Ruby also doesn’t help things, but at least she’s known the director for longer than Kana has in order to say such things. It’s the difference between when a friend or someone you know roasts you versus someone who you’ve only met once or twice does it.
Ack! Aqua’s black star eyes. Well, I guess it was too much to hope that he’d lost them permanently.
Huh, so the movie arc’s finished filming? I suppose that makes sense considering what we had last chapter, but it’s still a bitter pill to swallow considering that the movie barely gave us anything about Hikaru and Ai that couldn’t have been extrapolated beforehand.
Frill is a beast, as always. She takes two months off her schedule because She Can and her popularity’s going to be fine afterwards. I dunno how accurate that is to real life, but usually big shot actors and such choose which jobs to pick, but even then they also have to follow the schedules of their manager? Though with enough pull even that’s something that can be leveraged, I suppose.
Taiki oh my god. Does incest run in this family or something? It must be something in the Hikaru genes.
And Frill in a full diving suit! The gap moe is real. Melt having mixed feelings is a sign of his bad taste! Look at her legs!
The Akane-Kana interactions are gold as always. It’s always funny to see how they both seem to change their behaviors when the other person is around.
There is an entire page dedicated to unnecessary beach scenes, but I’d like to point out the fact that Aqua is barely in any of them and Crow Girl of all people is. It’s obvious why the former isn’t there but the latter being Here At All throws me for a loop. Oh, to be a fly on the wall to hear Aqua explain why it’s so necessary for Crow Girl to be here on this outing at all.
And then there’s the eventual Akane-Aqua conversation. For all of her talk of “I’ll stop your plan, Aqua-kun.” she never really interfered with the movie. She’s just content to stalk Hikaru and hope that Aqua doesn’t decide to stab him himself. Which feels like the wrong move—if Aqua wanted Hikaru dead by his own hands, he’d have done it by now after he knew his identity.
Akane trying to talk about Aqua’s revenge scheme and trying to persuade him otherwise is something both funny and a bit too late. She’d already thrown her shot during their breakup so it’s interesting to see why she thinks she can get through to Aqua again when there hasn’t been much change in his circumstances. The movie being produced is certainly one big change, but I don’t think that this whole “social sanctions” that she’s referring to are going to take root when Hikaru has an eye on the movie through Kaburagi. Perhaps she’s just saying that to try and convince Aqua.
The movie in-universe feels alot like a nothingburger, really. Ai wanted to be understood through this movie and Aqua used it as a vessel for revenge. And his “attempt” at revenge only dredged up a little controversy. As soon as the next fad comes around, the public’s attention is going to drift from whatever Aqua’s put in front of them. He should know this. Even Ai’s death was eventually cast aside and forgotten by the masses. Why would Hikaru being the twins’ father be any different?
Not to mention the fact that they still can’t prove that Hikaru manipulated things so that Ryosuke could kill Ai. The movie might lean into that direction, but that doesn’t amount to anything—even businessmen and corporate executives will look the other way at illegal and morally reprehensible behavior if it benefits them. Why does Aqua think that this movie will change anything about Hikaru’s life besides letting him know that Aqua thinks he killed Ai?
Welp, that’s Kana formally bowing out of the Aquabowl. Akane hasn’t been in the running for ages now so this conversation between them might as well be her resignation. Her giving up Aqua and asking Akane to get together with him is almost certainly not the behavior of someone who’s going to win Aqua’s hand. It would undercut so much about how everyone else has struggled for the Aquabowl since the start.
Akane’s face as Kana says all this is just brilliant. She must feel so poleaxed by Kana, especially with her previous thoughts leading her in the direction that Aqua likes Kana even though at the time Aqua was in a relationship with Akane herself. Who’s in the right here? Both of them and none of them, really. Aqua likes both of you, but romance hasn’t ever been his priority since he’d been focused on his revenge plot. Trying to fix him by pushing someone else to get together with him isn’t the way to go.
This chapter was not necessary. I think the presence of a fucking beach chapter wasn’t necessary just to set up these Akane-Aqua and Akane-Kana conversations. This conversation could’ve been around the movie set, or done through a variety of flashbacks—it’s not like the manga isn’t shy about doing that sort of thing. Though maybe we’ll be getting a followup on this scene in the next chapter, but with the manga’s garbage pacing right now I doubt it.
Of course, all of this is just avoiding the elephant in the room—Ruby’s confession. I’d mentioned previously that if Aqua pushed Ruby away she wouldn’t have reacted the way she’s been multiple times after Ch143. Leaving that up in the air when both Akane and Kana are making their own plans to help Aqua and try and help him just makes this entire love triangle garbage feel even worse than it already is.
Realistically speaking both of them have already shot their shot and failed for various reasons—so attempting to string the reader along by dredging up the love triangle angle is such a tone-deaf narrative decision. Yes, Akane wants Aqua to be happy, yes, Kana wants Aqua to be happy too. But laying it out narratively Like This just serves as a proxy to serve up this love triangle plotline that we’d already got stuffed with earlier in the manga. Bringing the spotlight back on this topic when there are already so many other more relevant topics in the movie arc that weren’t explored for some godawful reason is a kick in the teeth. I’m just hoping that we don’t get anymore screentime for these girls meandering around Aqua and instead do something that’ll actually affect him in some manner.

@kasualkaymer @soultrappedstjiub ahhh ty ;_; i am still working up the courage but i did come up with a plan... if i make little moodboard-y things for my projects / OCs / stories, then i Will want to post those, which sounds like a great excuse to make myself summarize them and thus get the ball rolling
i like how, when i started this blog fresh, i told myself (and everyone who reads my about) that i would actually like. talk on here. and post stuff about my projects
but the chronic shyness + general anxiety got me as it usually does so now, even though i Want to post about stuff, i'm too gotdang embarrassed to do so
#mala talks#i also have an oshi no ko lyrics/panels edit i'm thinking hard about#but i need to decide what panels to use#out of 148 chapters and another one drops tomorrow...............

chapter 148 and thoughts
I feel very conflicted about servamp. I want to be able to say that I enjoyed the ending of servamp but idk if that statement will become true. I feel that the last chapters has just been rushed???? Like where did og touma come from? Mahiru is sacrificing himself? The Mikuni world just got destroyed? What about the count and Kuro? Did the story even need the eves and servamps to fight pandora? I have a lot of concerns about the story and I want to trust Tanaka but I think the last chapters will just have a bunch of information squished in because of all the unanswered questions. Even though I like Nico and Iduna’s moments, I feel like their moments should’ve been shorter to give more time to mikuni, mahiru, tsurugi, etc. Like did we even need that much chapters regarding Tsuyuki’s dad and shamrock? I also sometimes feel like mahiru and Kuro aren’t given enough screentime that they need. I just hope that the ending won’t be as disappointing as Oshi no ko’s ending. I don’t really want experience something like that again.

I feel Aqua's entire character got retconed with this chapter, there was never a revenge to begin with…so all the build up, akane trying to stop him, hurting his loved ones, him dying afterwards, and even ch95 while we're at it is useless…then Ruby's character got entirely ruined for a nothing incest subplot
Someone rewrite onk asap please, what is this
idk if I would say Aqua was outright Retconned because this has always been the place I expected his arc to land, but it defo feels like it lacks immediate buildup, if that makes sense. Like how Kana's sudden leap to AKANE YOU SHOULD DATE AQUA ^_^ in 148-9 feels jarring when it happens but makes sense in the context of Kana's arc as a whole and her outside POV on the AquAka relationship. Aqua landing here makes sense for his overall arc, but he suffers the same issue Ruby has recently where we don't actually see the internal work that got him here, just this big dramatic payoff in lieu of the long term characterization to support it. I think it stands out even worse with Aqua because we were locked out of his head the entire Movie Arc, so any major change to his character rn is gonna feel really jarring and unsupported.
ruby i absolutely won't defend tho lol. Man. I was actually really hype for the AQRB stuff to get addressed in the text and for OnK to explore wtf incest even is for Aqua and Ruby and to prod and poke at all the interesting and uncomfortable aspects of their personalities we could get out of pursuing that plot and it just didn't happen lol. Ruby just turns into the imouto from every incest hentai ever and every interesting plotline she had going on gets dropped (MARINA TENDOUJI COME BACK AND SAVE THE OSHI NO KO)
It especially frustrates me because OnK HAS handled incest in a really interesting way before!!! Aqua has to unfuck his feelings about Ai during LoveNow and figure out what his feelings for her even are, complicated as they are by him inheriting Gorou's gachikoi attraction to her. Even though he does ultimately settle on 'no I wasn't romantically or sexually attracted to Ai', the fact that he HAS to think about it, and the guilt and revulsion that radiates off him that entire micro-arc is soooo fucking good. It's such a good example of that kind of, reincarnation identity dysphoria OnK was so good at digging into that I really miss in this half of the manga.

brief thoughts about onk 148
specifically not calling this a reaction because I don't have enough to say to really warrant deeper analysis but I do want to put my off the cuff thoughts somewhere
1st point: hello Gotanda my friend Gotanda. I don't think I've ever had the chance to talk about this but despite having a pretty minor role comparatively I like him a lot, he's probably like. my fifth favorite character or so? So whenever he shows up I'm happy.
2nd point: Speaking of favorite characters, Akane is here, it's really nice seeing her interact with Aqua again, their dynamic is one I really like seeing. I notice that the narrative is still intentionally obscuring what Aqua is thinking - in their conversation, she's the one that gets the thought bubbles clarifying her intentions, while he spends most of it silent, continuing the trend of Aqua being a bit of a mystery to the audience in this arc, and especially since 143. I'm sure the eventual payoff will be spectacular though.
3rd point: Hmm. While the first half of this chapter was breather/fluff that I didn't have deeper thoughts on, and the Aqua Akane discussion was interesting continuation of character threads, I'm feeling less joyful about the last handful of pages. I do feel a bit hypocritical saying this, as someone who has written multiple metas about oshi no ko ship comparisons, but I do think the series is better when it's not directly focusing on that. Kana's request to Akane felt to me like it came out of nowhere and was almost soap opera-y? Like, I have nothing against romance series or love triangles or any of that right, there are many series I enjoy with those elements, but it doesn't feel like OnK was a series that dealt with that very often - the fandom does, certainly, but I felt like the series itself was usually a bit detached from that kind of thing. Maybe this is just a me personal thing but the last couple pages felt like a rapid shift into a different genre that I wasn't prepared for. But as usual, I will sit and see how this pans out and how the author will handle it.
Oh yeah which brings me to point 3.5 - not really a point but while I appreciated what the chapter was doing on it's own merits it did kind of feel like we dropped some threads in the jump between 147 and this, that I am still waiting to be picked up. Only time will tell but I'm not sure this was a great place for a breather chapter, rather than doubling down on the tension. But again, impossible to say until we see future developments.

Ok here we go
Chapter 148
BEACH EPISODEEE!!!
Fun but what abt the movie
Not taiki being traumatized lol💀
Gotanda a dad confirmed(is that his name???? I genuinely forgot)
Gotanda has accepted the role of a father.
Noooo it's really sweet actually :(
Uhh taiki is simping for minami interesting i guess
How???? What??? Also melt is simping for frill
Let frill have fun she's for you guys to ogle :/
Also aqua SO CUTEE
Kana :D
Is she gonna do a comercial for a sunscreen now 💀
I guess Kana and Akane are bonding. That's nice.
MEM?????
Crow child is here too I see
Hmmm. Aqua is isolating himself and Akane is keeping an eye on him. That's honestly reasonable if you don't want your friend going to jail for murderer but also.
What if she's working for hikaru or something
Now that I think of it, it's not that likely, but Akane is still lowkey suspicious.
She's bringing up some good points
Awe. Maybe she does just want him to be happy. She looks pretty in these panels.
Kana is talking to Akane about Aqua. Hm
.
KANA NOOO YOU ARE THE ONE. YOU ARE THE BUTTER TO HIS BREAD. THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE. HIS SOULMATE
WHY MUST YOU DO THIS
...i guess that's it???
I don't really know how to end this lol
Ok ok ok so I'm finally gonna read the recent oshi no ko chapters
Saw another person live blogging another manga and I thought it was fun so that's what I'm gonna do

148 chapter review
honestly this will be pretty short because. there's not really much to say. its the usual chill chapter right before drama so it had fun character interactions which were...okay? i guess? taiki saying all that about ruby is. weird to say the least what with his backstory and everything. and the fact that he somehow forgot shes his sister.
tbh its been a running joke of gotanda being single + about his attachments to kana and aqua being really close to a father-child dynamic and to see it mentioned that he essentially wanted a family and was preparing for it...ouch. a nice tidbit to tie in the jokes.
FRILLS SWIMSUIT GOD I LOVE HER
AKANE GOING RIGHT FOR IT LMFAOOO GET IT I GUESS???? blessing us with yuri before all the drama
i will say off the back of 146 where aqua admits to kana that he feels happy whenever he's with her (paraphrased) and the good terms the two of them have been on it is really odd to have her try and pull an romance scheme then immediately turn around tell akane she's giving up when we see none of her thought process for this, but not getting characters thoughts is truly par for the course with oshi no ko now anyway. i do hope we get a continuation of this conversation next chapter though and that it isn't resolved offscreen
speaking of romance plots i do need to say that there having been absolutely no aftereffects from 143 because of the shit show that it was and then fully completely ignoring that point of the plot for five chapters straight...what even was the point? if you aren't going to explore it then why the hell did you spend chapters dedicated to that making us lose out on important ruby characterisation along with any meaningful moments and character interactions and buildup in the movie arc that actually get addressed. its been such a Nothing that it feels genuinely insane to read through the arc and then. have it fall so utterly completely flat lmfao. if you're gonna give us a pie at least bake it.
and akane going straight for the heart of the issue with aqua here. that what he is planning Will hurt him and the people around him, especially if he goes through with it to the point that he dies (which he has outright said he is going to do). it kinda solidifies that (taking into account everyone else's attempts to help him) that it won't be a romantic interest a single person who helps save aqua but all of them working together
and hes back to double black hoshigan. if we're going with @aihoshiino's interpretation that the switching between black and white hoshigan was him wavering in his conviction, i think him not switching here means he's made up his mind.
no break next week....
