Word Find WIP Meme
The rules: I've been assigned four words to find in my WIPs, and I assign four new words for anyone I tag.
Thank you for the tag my lovely @thelettersfromnoone and @lord-aldhelm! I've got 8 now because of my two nice taggers ahaha I've been given:
good, soft, time, warm and heat, point, grown, land so here we go hehehe. Also just to mix things up, these are all from different fics, just for a change of pace :)
Good: “Teach me, my King. Show me what feels good…” Osbert swept his hair behind his ear, pressing sweet kisses on the sensitive skin around the lobe. (In His Father's footsteps, Osbert x Aethelstan)
Soft: Whether it was his soft cerulean eyes, or the subtle slope of his strong nose, Eadith couldn’t be sure where her attraction formed. (Lead us into temptation, (Please, Lady), Osferth x Eadith)
Time: He felt euphoric, thoroughly worn out and sated when Osbert brought him to tears three more times. (Dressed in Sin, Osbert x Aethelstan)
Warm: At her obvious disdain and sorrow, Athelstan raised his head again. His hand was warm on her shoulder, and she looked back at him with confusion. (Claws in Kattegat, Athelstan x Lagertha)
Heat: It was a little softer, a little kinder, yet still full of heat and desperation. Rupert pawed at you, dry-humping your thigh in search of friction. (Hello, Trouble, Rupert x Reader)
Point: Osbert’s black tresses were sticking up, gently teased into a fluffy mass of ebony locks that perfectly fell past his pointed ears. (This was actually difficult to find haha! The Seelie King, Osbert x Aethelstan)
Grown: Ever since he was a baby, Gawain had grown up around the Ashfolk. He'd carefully observed their lifestyles, marvelling at their rituals and their appearance. (Entwined by Fire and Earth, Gawain x Lancelot)
Land: With his eyes closed, he could see the fine snowflakes land on his thick lashes. Pretty lashes, that framed exceedingly beautiful eyes. (And we're ending with Osbert being a simp in In his Father's footsteps again teehee!)
To my lovely tags, your words are: green, forest, lying and leaves!
No pressure tags: @grinningkatz @lancedoncrimsonwings @book-and-music-lover @synintheraven @errruvande

Saint among Sinners
Chapter 7, in the Eadiths lady series.
Word count: 3344
Warnings: Your guess is as good as mine
Read chapter 6 “Spill the beans’ leading up to this chapter...
Uhtred strokes your cheek where your tear has fallen. You grasp his hand and lean your cheek softly against his huge weather palm.
“Please?” You ask again.
He casts his gaze down to his hand wrapped around yours and chuckles quietly to himself. He leans in against you, pressing his forehead to yours and you breathe in his safe familiar scent. You caress his cheek tenderly and peer into his blue sparkling eyes glimmering back at you. He slowly turns his head away from you and peers down at his lap.
“First…I need to know...” He says quietly avoiding your look.
Your heart quakes in your chest, you try desperately to remain calm as the butterflies in your belly begin to bounce around. He looks up to you with a wide grin. Your eyes light up waiting to hear what he's to say.
“...How come you're so good at this, faking an ailment thing?” He asks, unable to keep his face even any longer.
You exhale heavily and laugh wholeheartedly at his remark.
“Believe me, twas not an easy task!” You giggle.
You sit vibrating with laughter for a moment. He looks from your eyes back to your hand in his, laughter still thick in both your throats.
Once you’ve finally settled, you squeeze his palm a bit and try to look him seriously in the eye.
“So?.. Do we have a deal, my Lord?” You ask him plainly, trying not to show too much eagerness on your face.
“…I suppose I could sacrifice…. a day or two?” He asks sarcastically.
You giggle loudly at his remark. Clasping your hand over your mouth so as to not draw attention to you.
“Three?!” He teases dramatically looking back to you.
His big hand comes down upon yours, grasping your hand now between his. He stokes tiny circles around your knuckles and smiles madly.
“Longer!?” He asks with a snicker. “Please tell me, how long, woman?!” he chuckles, leaning playfully against you.
He brings your hand up to his lips and plants a tender long kiss on your knuckles where he just rubbed tiny circles. You gaze up into his stunning glimmering eyes and smile.
“As long as it takes.” you tell him.
He watches you carefully, peering deeply into your eyes as you gaze back up at him. His hand cups your chin softly and he slowly begins closing the gap between the two of you. Your eyes flutter shut and you hold your breath feeling him inch closer.
“I don’t think we have that much time..” He utters softly against your lips.
Your tender moment is quickly disrupted as you hear Eadith approaching, yelling her excitement of finding the herbs for your tea. Yours and Uhtred's eyes grow wide and you squeeze his hand tightly.
“You better be as good at this, as I am…” You whisper against him before he stands quickly pacing away from you.
“Eadith!” You call out, remembering to grasp your belly again. “Over here!”
She rushes over happily, Finan struggling to keep up with her, plops down next to you beside the tree, where Uhtred had just been.
“I’ve got it!” she hums gleefully. “All we need now is a fire, some hot water, and your belly should be good as new!”
You smile politely at her, remembering to keep your belly clasped. She spins around in her spot towards Finan, who's still huffing out of breath, and Uhtred, who's trying to hide the devilish smile dancing on his face.
“Could you two, go gather some firewood?” She pleads kindly.
Uhtred clears the laughter from his throat and smacks Finan on the back before heading off in the opposite direction.
“Of course my lady” Finan huffs, reluctantly following after Uhtred.
You sit trying to hide your own grin watching Uhtred's bad performance and quickly wipe it away as Eadith turns her attention back to you.
“You know, Eadith…I think I’m fine now, really.” You tell her.
“Nonsense!” She assures you, “I’ve got everything you need right here!” She tells you calmly, sorting through the plants from her bag.
“No Eadith!” You tell her more eagerly.
She stops and looks confused at you.
“It was just…lady troubles. That's all.”
“Oh!” she replies. “Well, in that case…” she continues happily “..We mine as well have some tea!”
~~~~~
Gathered around the fire, the day begins to drift away and the men; besides Uhtred, are visibly growing anxious. You try your best to act accordingly and Eadith tends lovingly to you, none the wiser. The fire crackles loudly and a spark drops out in front of you on the ground, you instinctively snuff it out with your shoe.
Uhtred sips water from his tin cup and meets Sihtrics eye. He swallows the sip dramatically, nodding towards him.
Sihtric watches as you do, and stands to face Uhtred.
"Lord, I believe lady Y/N is fine to travel, now's time to get moving before nightfall." He tells him in a concerned tone.
"Eh..you know Sihtric.." Uhtred begins.
The others turn their attention to him, including yourself.
"...I was thinking we might as well just make camp here for the night…" Uhtred replies stoically, peering off into the distance facing away from the group. "...Perhaps we could indulge ourselves a bit on the ale we have at hand…"
In seconds the men's faces light up meeting one another's eye, with delight painted across their faces. Finan leaps over the campfire heading towards the bags loaded up with many bottles of ale.
"I thought you'd never ask, my Lord!" Finan cackles, holding bottles up in the air.
Osferth, Sihtric, and Eadith waste no time joining Finan in dishing out the ale. You peer around the group with a satisfied smile when your eyes lock with Uhtred.
He stares in your direction, making no mind of hiding it from the others. You stare back watching and hoping the happiness you feel at this moment is also being felt by him as well. At least more so than any regret he may have; not be early on his arrival back to Wessex this time.
Eadith hands you a cup of ale and your stare with Uhtred breaks. You smile back at her as she giggles happily.
"I wonder what's gotten into him?" She says before taking a sip, gesturing towards Uhtred.
"...Who knows?.." You reply, hiding your smirk as you bring your own cup to your lips; your eyes meeting back with Uhtred who's also being handed a full cup of ale.
~~~~~
The moon looms far overhead beyond the tree leaves while the fire roars before you. The group has and still is indulging themselves with the stolen ale Finan has been able to acquire from past towns. Regardless of how it became, you're glad to have another night under the stars with the group.
Osferth, opening up from the drinks, has made himself quite comfortable beside Eadith. His arm wrapped gently around her neck as he wavers a bit back and forth listening to her as she speaks. Finan and Sihtric shout out a laugh in unison, seemingly sharing some grand story with Uhtred calmly beside them. Uhtred sits watching you from across the fire, and as if he's able to read your thoughts; looks around the group assuming they're all too intoxicated to make much note of his moment towards you.
Ale in hand, he seats himself beside you and pours you both a fresh cup. Eadith let's out a hearty cackle from beside you; you meet Uhreds look before laughing amusingly to yourselves.
"Would be ashamed to cut all this short." He says softly with a chuckle.
You nod, joining him in his amusement; watching the others.
"Hopefully Finan has enough stored away for the next few nights," he adds, taking a sip. "Otherwise we will be in a hurry…to get to the next town at least and stock up!"
You giggle madly at his words, unfortunately, drawing the attention of the others, over to the two of you in the process.
"AY!" Finan calls out from across the fire. "What are you two love birds doing over there!?"
Your heart sinks into your stomach and you feel your cheeks flush with red. Uhtred, also feeling the tension, stirs uncomfortably and turns his body towards the fire a bit.
Finan gets up and hobbles over to Eadith and Osferth. You're sure he can hear the beating in your chest as you finally exhale the lump in your throat down slowly.
Finan mocks the two entangled in each other before dramatically sitting himself down between the two of them. Eadith cackles and scoots closer towards you, squishing you closer towards Uhtred. You inch carefully as Uhtred does nothing to move away… but instead, gently places his hand on your lower back. You allow yourself to enjoy the moment for a few brief seconds before turning your head toward Uhtred, and peer up lustfully at his big blue eyes. He smiles gently down at you with a smirk dancing across his face…
You both jump when Sihtric places himself on the other side of Uhtred, breathing a hot wave of ale breath on you. Finan chews thoughtfully on the end of a stick then points playfully to Eadith.
"I'm watching you!" He says sarcastically, pointing between Osferth and Eadith. The crooked circle bellows in laughter as cups are refilled; Uhtred's hand refuses to leave its spot on your back…
So badly you wish to spin your head around and grip his face between your hands and meet his lips with yours. Devouring his mouth, feeling his hot tongue against yours before pulling back and spying his brilliant blue eyes sparking down at you asking not to stop…, but instead you sit still, feeling his huge warm body so close to yours, and the soft tickle of his beard scratching at your temple. Before you can hear the words he tries to mumble, Osferth casts his hand in your direction.
"Us?!" Osferth states, still swallowing down his mouthful of ale. "What about those two?!" He says with a laugh pointing towards you and Uhtred.
You freeze, feeling your throat swell up yet again. The fear makes its way down toward your stomach.
"Can't I ask the lady if she's feeling better?" Uhtred quickly, and smoothly fibs.
His hand falling away from your back as the group seems to accept his lie well enough. The others mumble to themselves as you swallow hard, raising your cup to your mouth trying to hide the redness on your face that has formed. You try to relax again back towards Uhtred's hand but it has disappeared; not as quickly along with the knot in your stomach.
Osferth finishes his cup as Finan eagerly cheers him on.
"Now… sleep," the baby monk replies, tipping his cup upside down.
"Aw no, not yet!" You protest as eagerly as you can, trying not to sound too eager to spend more time next to Uhtred.
Sihtric drains the remains of his cup into his mouth before also agreeing and standing to join the baby monk.
"No! Come on, stay up with us!" You cry again; this time Eadith joining in your plea.
Uhtred makes no comment but begins to stand and walk towards his tent along with the others.
"Aw, forget them ladies…. They're not fun… we can have a good time just the three of us…" Finan jokes.
You and Eadith make eye contact knowing being alone with Finan in the middle of the woods is the very last thing you should be doing…
"Please!" You both beg now. "Don't go, come on, stay here!"
"And do what?" Sihtric snaps, his hands placed firmly on his waist.
You and Eadith sit quietly for a moment trying to come up with a reason…
"Oh I know!" Eadith cries out cheerfully. Let's play a game!"
Osferth strides back over the circle around the fire and seats himself, again by Finan who 'huraws' his return.
"What game?" The baby monk asks hopefully.
"Umm…" Eadith wavers a bit trying to think of one.
"Stones!" Finan pipes in.
"No, we are not playing your made up game Finan!" You tell him with a laugh.
"Oh I know!" Eadith says turning towards you. "What's that game we used to play in the field…back…when we were at…Madam Ells!?..." Eadith asks you through staggering words.
"Uhhhm…" you rack your brain trying to understand.
"Saint amongst Sinners!" She blurts out finally.
You raise an eyebrow at her and peer around the circle; clearly no one else has ever heard of the game.
Sihtric and Uhtred make their way back over and sit down around the fire as well, Uhtred much further away than before, but still beside you.
"Saint amongst Sinners? Well, clearly the Saint is baby monk..game over!" Sihtric states with a laugh.
"No, it's fun!" Eadith assures him all too gleefully. "We all go around the circle naming off ‘sins’ we've never partaken in…" She begins to inform the group.
"Oh yes, I do remember this." You add. "We all start with our hand out, palm open. One by one we all go around the circle and name something bad you’ve never done, but, believe the others may have. If you have, you close your palm and you're out for the rest of the game, but the last person with their palm open is the Saint!"
"Oh… I get it," Sihtric says plainly.
"You do?” Finan says with a straight face. “Well, could you explain it to the rest of us?" He shouts through a laugh across the circle.
"It's easy, watch, Eadith and I will start…" You tell them; sitting with your hand out palm open.
"I am a Saint, for I have never stolen…" you state.
The others copy your open hand and look blankly at each other.
"Now, if you have ever stolen, you close your palm and you're out." Eadith tells them.
She looks to Finan whose hand is still open.
"So you're out Finan, close your hand."
"Why! I've never stolen!" He argues.
"Where'd you get all this ale from?!" She asks with a cackle.
"That's not stealing…thats…its" He tries to reassure the group.
"Stealing, and you're out!" Replies Sihtric as the group roars in laughter.
"Dumb bloody game.." Finan spats sarcastically.
Eadith goes next, "I am a Saint, for I have never told a lie to my mother…"
You reluctantly close your hand and eye the circle seeing you're the only one.
"How have you all never lied to your mothers?" You ask shocked, eyeing the others around the circle…
"Dumb game isn't it!" Finan says with a smirk.
"Hard to lie to your mother when you haven't got one,” Osferth tells you apologetically.
The group roars with laughter, yet again.
~~~~~~~
After a few more rounds of the game it's clear; Osferth was in fact the leading Saint among Sinners in the group. Leading with not having laid with anyone outside of wedlock, not having shamed another publicly, and never telling a white lie… Beyond killing another being in or out of war, that round you found yourself winning. It was now Eadiths turn again, and with the ale flowing steadily she flashed you a quick devilish look and began with her hand open in the circle.
“I am the Saint among Sinners, for I have never lay beneath a blanket with Y/N..”
You’re sure the group could hear your heart slamming in your chest and you carefully eye the circle of hands before you, watching Uhtred reluctantly fold his hand closed and retract it from the view of the others.
You hold your breath in your throat as eyes grow wide meeting each other's looks, quickly followed by inaudible stammering and shouting from across the circle.
You flash Eadith a very disapproving look and try your best to be heard over all the men now shouting around the fire. Eadith, whos far too inebriated to appreciate your looks of terror, force you turn your attention to Uhtred; whose face is painted with a thick smirk as he takes a long sip of ale. You flash him a look of ‘help’ while he eyes you and downs the rest of his cup's contents.
Leading Eadith, the group begins chanting; “Uhtred, Y/N, tell us” while Uhtred and yourself grow restless in your seats.
“There's nothing to tell!” You shout desperately.
Uhtred shakes his head towards the group and lays back against his elbows on the ground. You turn your attention back to him and anticipate with a heaving heartbeat his words. His eyes avoiding yours makes your pulse increase even more..
“It just so happens…”
“It was just one time!” You interrupt him, shaking noticeable.
“...When we all thought Eadith was ill, and it was cold…we ended up under the same blanket in the horse stalls because it was cold!...”
The others ‘ohh’ and ‘ahhing’ over the lie you choose.
“It was just that once…and I’m not sure why Eadith is so adamant on forcing my hand in sharing the story seeing as she already knows…”
You flash her quick look of ‘stop it’ before adding “Who needs another drink?!”
Everyones cup raises and you quickly take the chance to lock arms with Eadith, hoist her up, and begin making your way towards the tent, to grab another stolen bottle of ale.
Eadith laughs as you guide her towards the tent flap.
“What in God's name are you doing?!” You ask in a rasped whisper.
Your heart; still beating rapidly in your chest as you cast the tent flap closed behind the two of you. She leans against the thick tree limb holding the structure secure. Laughter still in her throat, she shakes her head a bit from side to side. You pour her a cup, well knowing she doesn't need a refill and take a long sip from the long bottle neck. You wipe your mouth in disapproval and stare back at her with rage and disapproval in your eyes.
…“I told you…You're playing a very dangerous game Y/N.” she says aftering taking her own gulp from her cup.
“Eadith!” You snap coldly.
She rolls her eyes dramatically, turning her back towards you slowly, peering out from the tents flap back towards the men gathered at the fire.
“You and I were once unbreakable…” she begins with a sad tone in her voice, still staring out towards the men around the fire. “You’re like a sister to me… And still are… Or so I thought…”
You allow a heavy sigh to escape you before shaking your head. She turns back and your look has turned a bit softer now.
“...I’m not sure anymore…What I am sure of, is the secrets you’re are keeping from me these days…” Eadith says with a solemn look on her face.
“Eadith…If there was anything to tell… I would tell you…” You say slowly, before taking a long sip from the bottle. “The truth is I don’t know what to make of Uhtred and myself..”
She rolls her eyes yet again, gathering her dress ready to make her way back towards the group. You lock arms with her, carefully urging her back behind the faint barricade of the tent.
“Alright yes…some things have happened…” You tell her quietly.
She crossed her arms a bit, wavering in place balancing her cup in her crossed arms.
“I watched you slip into his tent last night…” she tells you with a look of drunken disapproval on her face.
You bite back your bottom lip unsure of what to say next. She sighs and casts her look back out towards the group, you peel back the tent flap a smidge, and peer out with her. Uhtred looks back towards the tent and smiles meeting your eye. Eadith, clearly seeing the interaction, noticing Uhtred, she cranes her head towards you and allows the tent flap to shut.
“Alright you little Sinner…” Eadith says with a smirk. “Story time…”
The Kiss
note: inspired by a request from a lovely anon! I hope you will enjoy it, and thank you for sending in a request!
fic warnings: 18+. angst/fluff/suggestive. mention of alcohol and smoking.
pairing: modern!Sihtric x fem!reader (no use of Y/N)
summary: You and Sihtric had a love-hate relationship ever since he had been your first kiss at a school dance. And despite the hurt you bestowed on each other as you grew up, he was the only one to notice something was wrong with you when your life began to fall apart behind closed doors.
word count: 5.2k
Masterlist
Reblogs & comments are immensely appreciated.
'Here you are,' Sihtric said. He nearly stormed out of the club to chase after you when he saw you leave without a word, and he had enough of it. He had enough of your behaviour. So he had followed you and grabbed your arm to pull you with him, around the corner of the busy club's terrace and into a darkened, empty and narrow street.
'Hey!' you yelled. You tried to fight his grip, but it was useless to fight a man as strong as Sihtric, and you knew that too.
'Let's talk,' he half snarled and trapped you between his arms as he placed both hands next to your head, leaning against the wall you were backed up into.
'Sihtric,' you said weakly, 'please, I'm not in the mood today-'
'Oh, I know,' Sihtric said sternly, 'and that's why you're going to talk to me. Right now.'
'About what?' you asked, playing dumb.
'About what's wrong!'
You didn't answer Sihtric, you just stared up at him as he waited for you to respond. His warm and ragged breaths were visible in the cool night as he towered over you, leaning in close, the smell of alcohol lingering faintly on his lips. He was stunning, as he had always been, and you felt a pang knowing he wasn't yours. The curls on the unshaved side of his head stuck lightly to his glistening forehead, it had been hot inside the club and he hadn't gone easy on the liquor either, yet it seemed he wasn't quite drunk. A little tipsy, perhaps. That would explain why he ran after you, and why he had you trapped now. His duo coloured eyes darted all over your face, wild and filled with something you couldn't quite place. It could've been hatred, it could've been lust, but it could've been concern too. And little did you know, that it was all of the above.
'Talk to me!' Sihtric grunted.
You and Sihtric went way back. In fact, your whole friend group went way back. You had met Finan in high school and became friends quickly. And it didn't take long before you met his friends Uhtred, Osferth, Eadith, Gisela and Sihtric. You were all in the same school and shared some classes, and you had been head over heels for Sihtric from the very first moment you had met him, when you were both teenagers. His hair was long with the sides shaved, and his locks were tied back in an interesting braid looking creation.
You weren't the only one who had a thing for Sihtric back then, as he was one of the few kids in school who already had tattoos. He truly was the definition of a good guy with bad guy looks, something that many teens lusted for. And oh, did you long for him too. Always blushing whenever he was around, and laughing a little harder than the others did at his jokes. He made you giggle and hide your face in your pillow while kicking your feet, whenever you thought about him at home on your own.
Sihtric gazed at you a lot too as a youngster, so it wasn't a complete surprise when he ended up being your first kiss at a school party, many years ago. It had been a special moment for you, one that changed your life, and you had never forgotten about it. And neither had Sihtric, as he reminded you most often that he had been your first kiss, but you never understood why he kept bringing that up as the years passed.
Because anything more than that first kiss never happened between you and him. You wanted more, though. You wanted him to be your boyfriend. You wanted to be high school sweethearts and get married and have a family. But it seemed Sihtric had different plans, and you were too shy to act on your feelings, because he seemed to avoid you after that one kiss. He dropped out of school and went his own way eventually, dealing with his rocky family affairs and often getting into trouble. But that never stopped you from wanting to be with him, or simply wondering about him as an adult.
But since you were friends with all of his friends, you continued to somewhat hang out almost every week after you and the others graduated. You started going to pubs and clubs with the gang to celebrate the weekends, and to stay up to date with each other's lives as you grew up. You only didn't speak much to Sihtric, and you both weren't sure about what was going on in your lives in private. But you and Sihtric always kept gazing at each other from a distance, and his hand always lingered on the small of your back when he asked what you wanted to drink at the club, when he bought everyone a round. But besides that, few words were ever shared between the two of you.
A few years had passed already when you once overheard Sihtric, as he had a smoke with Uhtred outside of a club, when you were on your way to leave for home already. You heard Uhtred ask Sihtric why he never made a move on you, to which Sihtric had shrugged. And when Uhtred reminded Sihtric about that kiss you once shared, Sihtric shrugged again and said it had never meant anything to him. Despite the fact you and Sihtric never got really close, it still devastated you to hear that he hadn't cared about that kiss. And that made it even worse that he kept bringing it up from time to time. You thought he figured it probably had meant something to you, and that he only mentioned it to hurt you and remind you of something you would never have again. Or maybe he did it to taunt you, for whatever reason, while not knowing it hurted you all this time. And so with that heartbreaking knowledge you had left for home, and nothing would ever be the same again.
You couldn't stand being near him for a few weeks, after you had overheard his confession, but you soon found yourself in a phase of discovering other guys during your nights out. You did everything you could to take your mind off Sihtric, not wanting to look over at him as the flashing neon lights lit up his face so beautifully, and it wasn't shocking when you earned a lot of attention while dancing in your short dress and high heels on those nights out. You were always gorgeous and everyone knew it. But since you always only had eyes for Sihtric, you had never really noticed yourself how easy it was for you to dance with a stranger and earn a few free drinks in the process. So that's what you had done for years ever since, mainly to provoke some sort of reaction from Sihtric, but he always seemed too busy with a new girl every weekend to give you the attention you wanted from him. The only thing Sihtric would occasionally bring up after a few drinks, was how he had been your first kiss.
He'd always come up to you, handing you the drink he had bought for you while buying the whole group a drink, as usual. And he'd always wrap one arm around your neck to pull you closer, so he could half shout and slur in your ear how he had kissed you first, before anyone else. You never understood why he spoke of that moment, when all he did was kiss other girls in front of you, and had never kissed you again. So you'd always snap back at him, telling him how the kiss had been awful, and that you'd rather kiss some swamp monster than ever having to kiss him again. And Sihtric loved that part, he loved that you always had an answer back to him. And you loved it when he pulled you close, because you loved hearing his voice in your ear and feeling his muscular body pressed against you for a moment.
But deep down it tore you apart, because after every reminder you still had to watch him being all over someone else. So you kept doing the same to him, not knowing it drove him insane as well to see you with some guy that wasn't him. And everything went wrong once you took it too far one day, and it had now ruined your life.
You had met a guy named Rognvaldr, who was handsome and smart, but reckless and cunning too. Your friends, and even Sihtric, had all confronted you about Rognvaldr and told you how you'd better stay away from him, but you wouldn't listen to their words. And knowing that even Sihtric was clearly against you hanging out with that guy? That only made you want to rub it in his face more, because he was finally jealous and showing it.
'That guy will ruin your life,' Sihtric had said one night, after your shady boyfriend had left the club for a smoke and Sihtric had seen his chance to pull you close without having to buy you a drink.
'What do you care, Sihtric?' you lightly shoved him, 'don't you have some girl's bed to be in right now?'
'Oh, please,' he had rolled his eyes, 'just don't be stupid, okay?'
'I'm not.'
'I'm serious,' Sihtric had said and grabbed your arm, 'that guy is bad news, you should get rid of him. I don't want to see you get hurt.'
You had laughed at that, but almost a whole year later you cursed yourself for not listening. You were losing everything you had over time because of Rognvaldr, slowly but surely. And once you realised it, it was already too late to fix it.
In the last months of your relationship, before Rognvaldr had fled the country and left you, you became more quiet and distant. You often showed up alone at the club and you stopped buying rounds for your friends after a while on your nights out too. And whenever someone asked about your boyfriend, instead of boasting about him as you used to, you just feigned a smile and changed the topic as fast as you could. You stopped posting on your social media, where you previously posted tons of stories every day to show off how good your life with Rognvaldr supposedly was. And each time Sihtric teasingly reminded you of that first kiss, you had just stared up into his eyes with a look he didn't recognise. No more boasting and no more bickering, only a desperate attempt to keep up appearances by pretending you were happy. And yet no one really thought anything of it or even noticed the change in your behaviour, except for Sihtric.
And that is why he ran after you that one night, when you left without a word because you simply couldn't pretend anymore...
'Talk to me!' Sihtric grunted.
'Why?' you shoved him, 'what do you care!'
'Are you kidding me?'
You stared at him, uncertain of his intentions and expectations.
'You seriously think I don't care about you?' he asked tartly.
'Do you?' you snarked.
'Of course I do!' Sihtric half yelled, then lowered his voice as he trapped you again between the wall and his arms, by placing his hands next to your shoulders. 'In fact,' he scoffed, 'I can guarantee you that no one in there,' he briefly pointed towards the club, 'cares about you as much as I do. Because no one noticed your behaviour has been off for weeks already, but I did! And no one followed you out here when you suddenly left, but I did! Because I fucking care about you!'
'Then why do you always pretend that you don't!?' you yelled, 'you always seem to avoid me, except for when you had a few too many to drink!'
'Because that's a front, babe!' Sihtric yelled hoarsely.
You were clearly confused and taken aback by his sudden anger, and you didn't know what to say or do. And Sihtric realised he had blurted something out that he never meant to, not like that at least, and not right there.
'It's a fucking front,' Sihtric continued, trying to keep his voice down, 'because I care about you more than you could ever comprehend. Fuck,' he scoffed and took a step back, then paced back and forth for a few seconds and got back in your face again, 'you've been acting strange for weeks already, so you tell me what happened!'
'I got evicted!' you yelled and your voice broke, 'I got evicted from my house today, okay! I… I lost everything!'
Sihtric stared at you for a few long seconds, completely speechless. He needed a moment to process your words, and those words sobered him up entirely real quick.
'What?' was all he asked.
'Rognvaldr,' you said with a sob, 'he used me. He convinced me to invest in some shit I don't even understand, and I trusted him. But I've lost all my fucking money, Sihtric! And he fled the country a few weeks ago, because he's in so much debt,' you stopped talking to gather your thoughts, 'you… he left me, and he left me behind with a debt of my own. And I can't pay for it! I've been trying to fix this for months, ever since I started to see it, but it was already too late. I haven't paid my rent in months, because I just don't have the money for it, I got nothing! They changed the locks on the doors today, I can't go back home anymore. I… I can't get in.'
Sihtric was quiet for a moment. Anger began to boil in his blood, and he had to restrain himself from going full berserk in that narrow street. He kept his calm for you, because he would've punched those brick walls behind you until his knuckles would be cracked and bleeding if it was just him right there.
'I knew he was off,' he said quietly, 'I knew it.'
'You all knew,' you sniffled, 'but I didn't listen. I knew it too, but I didn't even listen to my own gut.'
'Why?'
'Because I wanted to make you jealous!' you admitted, 'because I wanted to get back at you, for always making out with girls right in front of me!'
'What?!' Sihtric yelled, 'I thought you hated me or something!'
'You were my first kiss, Sihtric!' you threw your hands up, then slapped his chest, 'how could I possibly hate you when I've been in love with you ever since we first met! But you always had to rub it in my face that we could never be anything, because you were always with some different girl making out right in front of my face! It was only when I showed up with Rognvaldr that I finally saw it. Only then I finally saw that same hurt in your eyes I've been put up with for years! But it's always been you I wanted to be with. You! No one else! And look at me now,' you laughed through your tears, 'just look at me now, I got fuck all.'
'Why… why did you never tell me?' Sihtric asked carefully.
'Because I know that kiss meant nothing to you! I heard you and Uhtred, years ago, when you told him about that. So why the fuck would I have told you the truth, if I never meant anything to you?'
'It did mean something to me!' he yelled and grabbed your arm with one hand, cupping your face with his other, 'you mean something to me!'
'Then why did you tell Uhtred something else?' you snarled.
'Because I was stupid!' Sihtric said, then scoffed and shook his head lightly, 'I was shy. You,' he hesitated for a second, then looked straight into your eyes, 'you were the first and only girl I fell in love with. And I was too shy to admit that. I acted all cool around you in school and after that kiss I just distanced myself from you, all because I had no idea who to handle it. I was afraid to be teased and mocked by my friends, because liking a girl was stupid back then. I never had any role models in my family to show me what a relationship should look like. I was scared. And that's not something I'm proud of and I'm not trying to be the victim here. Because, yeah, all of that was on me. It was my mistake. But,' he paused, 'you never made a move either. You never gave me any sign that you were into me.'
'Because I believed you didn't like me, unless you were drunk enough.'
'Pretending not to like you was only my way of protecting myself, and maybe even you.'
'How could that possibly protect me, Sihtric? How?'
'I think I just felt that… if we weren't together, I couldn't hurt you.'
'All you did was hurt me.'
'As did you, eventually,' he said and sighed softly, 'listen. Trust me, that kiss… every damn night, that kiss is the one thing that crosses my mind before I fall asleep. Every fucking night. Yeah, I should've said something, but you made your dislike for me clear too. I mean, why did you think I brought up that kiss so often?'
'How should I know,' you scoffed, 'you brought it up and then went on to kiss someone else.'
'I only brought it up because I hoped you'd tell me you wanted to kiss me again,' he said, saddened, 'I didn't know how else to approach it, and you always turned me down.'
'I just,' you stopped talking as you began to cry, 'I just wanted you. I started to lose everything from the day I lost you.'
'You never lost me,' Sihtric whispered and pulled you in his arms, holding you tightly, 'and you ain't losing me now either, okay? I just,' he sighed, 'why didn't you ask for help, darling? Does anyone else know about what happened with you and… him?'
'No,' you sniffled, 'I've been too embarrassed about this. You all were right and I refused to listen, and I just walked straight into the bullshit he told me. He took everything from me.'
Sihtric's arms tightened around you, and you heard his heartbeat quicken as your head was resting against his chest.
'He's dead,' Sihtric muttered, 'next time I cross paths with him, I'll fucking kill him.'
'Sihtric, stop,' you said and tried to push him away.
'No!' he hissed, 'I won't!'
He pulled you back in his arms again and leaned the side of his face against yours.
'So what was your plan tonight then?' he asked, 'where were you leaving to, where did you plan on staying?'
'I don't know,' you said and dried your tears, 'I don't know anything anymore, Siht. I don't know what to do.'
'It's midnight,' he argued, 'you were just going to leave without knowing where to?'
You shrugged. Yes, you had left the club, but you had no destination in mind at all. You then broke down in tears again, and Sihtric held you tightly in his arms as he fished his phone out of his pocket.
'I'm texting the others,' he said.
'No! Please, don't tell them about this-'
'I'm not,' Sihtric calmed you, 'I'm texting them that you aren't feeling well and that I'm taking you home.'
Sihtric was quick to order a cab after informing your friends, and he held you wrapped in his arms as you waited. It was a cold night, and you were tired and shivering in his arms while you wept quietly. He hushed you softly every now and then, both not speaking due to a lack of words and still trying to grasp what exactly was happening.
Sihtric held the cab door open for you and, once the door fell shut, he pulled you over to his side in the backseat, so he could still keep you close. The drive to his place was a quiet one, and only when he searched for his keys at the door did you look around the neighbourhood with your reddened and puffy eyes. You frowned as if confused, which Sihtric caught, and he asked what was troubling you.
'Where the hell are we?' you asked, taking another glance at the massive and luxurious houses across the street.
'My house?' Sihtric said, as if unsure himself.
'You live here?'
'You sound like you don't believe I do.'
'Well, I mean,' you stammered, then looked at his own villa, 'this… this is quite the neighbourhood. I didn't know you lived here? Do you really live here?'
'I do,' Sihtric chuckled and opened his front door, then mumbled, 'there's a lot you didn't know about me.'
Once in the hallway you both took off your coat and shoes, and you couldn't help spotting a pair of black Oxford shoes in his little shoe cabinet.
'Fancy shoes,' you remarked.
'Comes with a fancy suit.'
'I didn't take you for a fancy suit guy.'
'That's because I ain't,' Sihtric said, 'but I have to wear it for work every now and then.'
'Ah,' you smiled and nodded. You suddenly realised you had no idea what Sihtric did for a living. And it was as if he could read your mind, because he told you about his job as he led you into his spacious living room.
'Interior design,' he said, 'I started my own business a few years ago, and I've been lucky to be one of the successful ones.'
'Seriously?' you asked, impressed and rather amazed.
Sihtric nodded, 'Really. I've worked hard to get my name out there, and it paid off.'
'That's amazing,' you smiled, 'I'm happy for you. You're right that I don't know much about you, but I do know your life wasn't easy when you were young. So to see you managed to make something of your life… that's amazing.'
'Thank you,' Sihtric said rather shyly.
'You've been building the most amazing life for yourself,' you said with a light scoff, 'while I was busy ruining mine.'
'Don't think like that,' Sihtric said. He took your hand and you sat down with him on his sofa. 'How much do you owe your landlord?' he asked.
'Sihtric,' you sighed, 'it doesn't matter.'
'How much?'
'Look, I'm a few months behind on rent-'
'How much?'
'It's… it's a few thousand,' you said softly, 'I'll figure it out.'
'How much?' Sihtric asked again, and he stared right into your eyes when you looked up at him, 'tell me how much.'
'About four thousand,' you almost whispered, ashamed.
'Okay,' he said calmly and sat back, 'we'll fix it.'
'How?'
'Tomorrow,' Sihtric said and looked at you again, 'I want you to call or text your landlord, and you will tell him that you will pay the amount you still owe him.'
'Sihtric, no-'
'And,' he cut you off, 'you will tell him that you will also pay six months of rent in advance, but only if he gives you the new keys to your place.'
'I can't let you do that.'
'You can't stop me either,' he said and took your hand in his, 'we will fix this. And you can stay here as long as you need to, until you get the keys to your place again. You can argue all you want, but this is how it's going to be. And you don't have to pay me back, you won't owe me and I will never use this against you either, whatever happens between us from here on.'
You wanted to argue, but you knew Sihtric wouldn't let you win this, so all you did was agree and hug him tightly as you thanked him.
'I don't deserve you,' you sniffled and leaned back to look at him.
'You're right,' Sihtric whispered and smiled faintly, 'because you deserve everything good in this world, and I'm not that.'
'But you are,' you whispered, 'you have always been a good person.'
'But I've been stupid too.'
'As if I haven't been stupid?' you chuckled softly, 'I'm sorry for trying to hurt you all these years. I should've just talked to you, but I was scared.'
'I'm sorry too,' he said and took your chin gently, 'I should've done things way differently too. I was never aware how I've hurt you. But I do know I made a mistake not chasing after you when we were young, and I regret that. I've always regretted that.'
'I just want to move on from this.'
'So do I.'
You looked at each other and both smiled rather shyly, then went in for another tight hug, agreeing it was time to move forward now. Sihtric then suggested getting some sleep, as it had been an exhausting few hours and it was almost two in the morning already.
'You can get your own room,' he said as you followed him up the stairs, 'but I'll be honest, I'd much rather have you share my room with me. But only if you're comfortable with that.'
You looked around his large but cosy bedroom and then scratched your head for a second as you stared at his massive bed.
'You want me to share the bed with you? The same bed which you have shared with so many others before?'
'What?' Sihtric frowned, 'no! Actually… I never took any girl home. You're the first girl to ever set foot in here.'
'What?'
Sihtric shrugged, 'They had no reason to be here. I didn't want them here, in my house.'
'And you want me here?'
'I do. I've always wanted you here. You're the only one I ever wanted to sleep next to.'
'And yet you slept next to many-'
'I haven't,' Sihtric calmly interrupted, 'I never stayed the night. I always left their place as soon as it was done. I don't sleep next to just anyone, but I'd like to sleep next to you.'
You felt flattered as he gazed at you, and for a moment you felt like that teenage girl again who had blushed and giggled each time Sihtric had looked at you during class.
'Fine,' you mumbled and feigned as if your decision had no impact on you, 'I'll sleep next to you.'
Sihtric smiled and closed the bedroom door. He showed you his en suite bathroom, where you fixed yourself up a little before you got dressed in one of his clean shirts, which was comfortably oversized on you. You got cosy in his bed while Sihtric used the bathroom, and you almost choked on your own saliva when you watched him come out, wearing nothing but his tight fitting black boxers. He wasn't aware of your wide eyed stare while he walked over to the bed, as the room was dimly lit with only the lights on both nightstands switched on, so he got under the covers without realising you were a nervous and shy mess.
You laid next to each other in silence for a moment after the lights were switched off, and Sihtric was the first to get over his own shyness when he cautiously moved closer towards you. He wasn't sure if you were okay with it, so he didn't go all in at first but, when he realised you weren't going to elbow him in the ribs, he snuck an arm around your waist and pulled you closer.
'You mind?' his voice sounded warm and soft in your ear.
'No,' you smiled in the dark.
'Good,' Sihtric said with a soft hum, and he snuggled up a little closer.
You cuddled like that for a good time. No talking, just laying there in the comfortable dark of the night as you felt each other's body warmth while listening to the sound of your breaths as they slowly became in sync. The weight of his arm rested comfortably on your side, and you couldn't help closing your eyes to the feeling of his warm breath touching your neck. You mindlessly pressed your backside even closer up against his body, and your heart skipped a few beats when you heard his light chuckle in your ear, followed by a low hum.
You both were already dozing off when he made you melt entirely in his arms, when he slowly nuzzled your neck, before planting his lips on your skin several times as he held you. You heard and felt his breathing became deeper and faster the more he kissed your neck, because in response you pushed yourself entirely up against him, feeling his arousal grow and twitch as you slowly and somewhat sleepily wiggled your ass against his crotch.
'Don't taunt me,' Sihtric mumbled sleepily as his hand moved up the side of your thigh, 'you have no idea how much I've wanted you all these years. And you have no idea how much I want you right now.'
He snuck his hand under your shirt and rested on your hip, lightly squeezing it as you murmured in return how needy you had been for him, and still were. You then turned to face him, and you finally crashed into a deep and passionate kiss while taking off the few clothes you each had on. Sihtric then flipped you over with ease, and he moved to lay on top of you, between your thighs.
'Promise me I'll be the only one from now on,' you whispered against his lips, with one hand in his curls and the other slowly working his hardened length under the sheets.
'I promise,' Sihtric said and sighed deeply, almost desperately, as a moan got caught in his throat, 'you're the only one,' he rested his forehead against yours as you continued to please him so painstakingly slowly, 'you'll always be my only one. I have always only thought of you, I have always only loved you. And I will always only love you, if you will let me.'
His last words were almost a beg, and you gave in with no hesitation, as you knew he had always been the only one for you as well, and he would always be your only one too. And with that knowledge and those honest confessions from you both, you finally made love until early in the morning. And you fell asleep in his arms, both bare, and you only woke up late on that sunday afternoon. And you then called your landlord to get rid of your debt.
'But instead of asking for the keys,' Sihtric had said before you made the call with him by your side, 'maybe you can tell your landlord that you just want to stop by and pack up your stuff, because you found a home somewhere else?'
'That home being here, with you?' you asked, shyly.
'Yeah. I would like that, but only if you would too.'
'I would,' you smiled.
'Well,' Sihtric smiled and kissed your forehead, 'then welcome home, darling.'
Do Not Go Where I Cannot Follow:
Part 2:
Finan x Reader
A/N: First of all a massive thank you to @axe-does-writing for beta reading this for me, you're the best! 🥰
Secondly, I can only apologise that its taken me so long to write part 2 of this (I can't believe its been nearly 12 months 💀), I am incredibly grateful to everyone who commented and has patiently waited for this. I have parts 3 and 4 already mostly written so I promise not to make you wait too long for the next instalments!
There isn't any direct Finan x reader interaction in this part but I will make up for that in the following parts.
Warnings: symptoms of sickness, angst, mild panic attack, established relationship
I hope you enjoy!!!
Part 1
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters or GIF
After a fitful rest in which you had tossed and turned trying to alleviate the aches that had settled throughout your body, you groggily opened your eyes.
The light was growing dim outside, it must be almost dusk by your reckoning.
The sound of faint voices, speaking in hushed whispers reached your ears from the next room, and you attempted to catch more of their conversation.
“...can’t stay here much longer…”
“...find a healer…”
Groaning, you swung your legs over the edge of your bed as you prepared to stand. Assessing yourself, you found you felt marginally better than you did prior to your sleep. You no longer felt as though you were burning up; you were still quite warm, but your skin no longer held that clammy quality it had before your nap. You still had lingering aches and a headache that pounded behind your eyes, but you no longer felt like you were dead on your feet.
With any luck, it might not be the sweating sickness, perhaps you had just grown overtired after travelling for so long after all. One could but hope.
Making your way into the next room, you found Osferth and Eadith exchanging worried glances over a very ill looking Aelfwynn, who lay unconscious on the bed between them.
Eadith was the first to see you, she gently smiled as her eyes looked you over.
“How are you feeling?”
Before you could open your mouth to reply, Osferth cut in.
“You look awful.”
“Thanks,” you deadpanned.
“I’m sure what Osferth meant was-”
“I know what he meant,” you rolled your eyes, “He’s fussing, as normal. I was going to say I feel a little better, actually.” Pulling yourself to stand a little straighter.
“How’s Aelfwynn?” you asked, your eyes casting back over the young girl laying between them.
“About the same.” Osferth’s eyes returned to the sleeping girl.
“Her breathing has become more laboured, I fear she needs a healer before she gets any worse.” Eadith anxiously added.
“I’ve told you, neither Aelfwynn nor Y/N are strong enough to travel and I am not leaving you here undefended to go and find a healer,” came his hot reply.
Clearly this was an argument you had missed while you were sleeping.
“Then you stay here and I shall find one.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, I am not letting you go out there alone, especially with your brother still on our tail,” he gestured wildly.
“That’s exactly why we can't stay here!”
The constant bickering between the two of them was starting to make your head spin as the pair of them became increasingly irate with the other. You couldn’t help but feel partly responsible for the argument. If you weren’t as ill they wouldn’t be as afraid to travel and you would probably be halfway to Mercia by now, or at least able to travel to find a healer.
“ENOUGH! Both of you!” You immediately regretted raising your voice, the pounding pain behind your eyes worsened causing you to feel mildly nauseous, almost reminiscent of better times spent with your husband in the inn consuming too much ale - or more specifically the hangover that followed the morning after.
“This isn’t helping Aelfwynn.” you continued.
You gently lowered yourself on the cot at Aelfwynn’s side, feeling the girl's forehead with the back of your hand. Her skin was hot to the touch and tacky as a layer of sweat sheened on her brow from the fever. Your eyes scanned the rest of her, watching as her chest rose and fell quickly with shallow breaths, you could hear the rasp of her laboured breathing without the need to lower your head to her chest. You did not have much time to delay.
You heaved a sigh through your nose. “Eadith is right. She needs a healer or I fear she does not have much time left.”
“We cannot-”
“Osferth, if we stay here, Eadith’s brother will find us. We should move back into the forest and start heading for Mercia. With luck, we will find a healer on the road who can tend to Aelfwynn. If that should fail, at least we will be closer to her mother should the need arise.”
You all fell silent for a time, watching the sleeping girl, lost in your own thoughts, praying that the worst wouldn’t come to pass.
She was just a child, the thought of her passing, away from her family no less, was nearly unbearable. You would make sure you did everything in your power to make sure that didn’t happen. No matter the cost.
Feeling a pair of eyes boring into the side of your head, you raised your eyes away from Aelfwynn and caught Osferth’s weighted gaze.
It seemed that you both said a thousand things in that one look without having uttered a single word. An understanding passed between you both at that moment.
You both knew you were not strong enough to travel.
You both knew there was nothing on this earth that would stop you from going.
There was no other option.
With a lump forming in your throat, you took a deep breath, diverting your gaze away, not being able to hold the truths, concern and guilt reflected in his gaze.
“It is too late in the day to travel now and we all need a few more hours of rest. Provided Aelfwynn does not worsen in the night, we will leave at first light for the forest and start making our way to Mercia.” Your quiet order carried to the others.
With that, you stood and made your way outside, desperately needing the cooling evening air to freshen you.
You only just made it outside the door before leaning against the wall as you broke into sobs, the panic curling through you causing your chest to go tight. You slid down the wall until you were sitting, your knees pulled up to your chest.
You rubbed at your chest uncomfortably, that tight feeling in your chest becoming an undeniable pulling sensation. You tried to suppress it, knowing the others were only just through the door, but the more you tried to stop yourself, the worse it became until your whole throat stung. Before long you were wracked with a coughing fit, coughing so hard it felt as though you would cough up a lung. It stung across the top of your chest, and made your head pound. More tears stung in your eyes and the whole process felt like an endless cycle. The more you cried, the worse the coughing got, the worse your head pounded which just led to more tears.
After what felt like an eternity it started to subside.
Resting your head on your knees, you tried to regulate your breathing, attempting to stop the tears.
In that moment all you could think of was how much you missed Finan. You felt almost hollow.
All you wanted was to be held in your husband's arms. For Finan to hold you, tuck your head under his chin and kiss your head, telling you everything would be alright.
But that wasn't possible. Because you had sent him away.
Why hadn't you just been honest with him as Osferth had suggested?
You could have stayed behind with Finan to recover while Osferth and Eadith took Aelfwynn to Mercia. It would have made sense.
No. Now you were being selfish.
You pulled your head up and let it rest against the cold wall behind you, letting the fresh air dry your tear-marked cheeks.
It was still best that he had left for Mercia with Uhtred. He was safer there. You would be joining him soon anyway.
You would be feeling better in a few days, you would find him in Mercia, have the reunion you promised to your husband with him none the wiser about your condition, Aelfwynn would be cured and with her mother, and all of this would be over.
You steeled yourself, pulling yourself up from the ground, still leaning against the wall for support as the world tilted slightly.
The rest of the men had always said you had a fire and determination that rivaled your husbands; it was what made you such a good match in their eyes.
Taking a steadying breath you made your way back inside to get some more rest. You needed to recover as much strength as you could for your journey.
You were going to get better. Everything would be alright.
You had a promise to keep.
I Really feel That I'm Losing My Best Friend.
Modern!Sihtric x Reader
Title Comes From This Song:
Request: Hi lana!! Can I get a best friend modern sithric x fem reader smut? They're just friends until everyone in their friend group brings up that reader and sithric would be a cute couple and it changes the dynamic of the relationship and they begin to have sexual tension until it just blows up
Thank youuu
A/N: I am awful a writing smut so I did my best. I'm really sorry if this wasn't what you wanted. But you know me by now there has to be angst dripping through the plot
Also this is not proof read because I have a fever, but I will correct any mistakes I come across xx
“You always fucking cheat,” you pouted attempting to swipe the cards from Sihtric’s hands and his eyes glistened with mischeviousness.
“Do not,” he laughed incredulously, pulling them away from your hands, to which you physically attempted to wrestle them out of his grasp, his laughter bouncing off the walls.
Uhtred had bored of the game ten minutes ago and was lying sprawled out on the sofa, his head resting on Gisela’s lap, bottle of beer resting on his stomach, and rolled his eyes at the exchange between you and sighed.
“Are you seriously telling me you two are not fucking?” he swiped and Gisela gave him a warning look over the hand of cards she was still holding.
Sihtric completely stilled in your arms and you immediately retreated.
“Oh come on!” Uhtred urged looking to Finan to back him up “I can’t be the only one who thinks this right?”
“We’re just friends,” Sihtric stuttered and Finan and Uhtred laughed.
“I’m your friend and you don’t look at me like you want to take all my clothes off,” Finan teased and Uhtred smirked his way.
“Leave them alone,” Osferth chimed in and you were grateful for a second, “I’m sure they’ll tell us when they are ready,” he smirked.
“It’s not like that-really, we’re just friends,” Sihtric tried to persuade, absolutely refusing to meet your eye.
“I’d like Eadith to be my friend,” Finan winked to Uhtred’s raucous laughter.
“In that case me and Gisela are just friends,” Uhtred chimed along too and you couldn’t help but shrink at being the cause of everyone’s laughter in the room.
“Uhtred!” Gisela warned with a stern look, to which he shrugged in surrender.
“C’mon, you’d be such a cute couple,” Finan added and Sihtric was rising from his spot on the floor, cheeks tinged pink with embarrassment and made his way outside to light a cigarette.
Gisela booted Uhtred off her and tutted “Now look what you’ve done.”
Your stomach was uneasy as you made your way into the kitchen to get another drink, you could hear Gisela and Uhtred arguing. She was scolding him for being such an arseling and you were grateful to her.
“You know how shy he is!” she chided.
You watched Sihtric outside, pacing up and down as he smoked. He ran his fingers through his hair and your heart skipped a beat, when he suddenly looked in through the glass and into your eyes.
You made your way outside and he offered you a cigarette which you gladly accepted, and ducked down to meet the flame of his lighter.
“Are you alright?” you tried after a few minutes of uneasy silence.
“I just wish they would cut that shit,” Sihtric sighed “I don’t want things to be awkward between us.”
“They don’t have to be,” you said softly “Sihtric we know what we are, nothing they say matters, okay?”
He nodded, taking a long drag from his cigarette.
“Are we good?” you asked, bumping his arm and he laughed a shaky laugh.
“Always,” he replied.
Uhtred appeared sheepish after a few minutes, scratching the back of his neck, and Sihtric laughed.
“Did Gisela send you out here?”
“No-Yes. Kinda.” he sighed “The bottom line is I was joking. You’re my friends and I love you both and I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”
“Forget it,” you smiled kindly, squeezing Sihtric’s hand in yours.
Sihtric tossed and turned on Uhtred’s sofa, you were sleeping soundly on the pull out bed on the floor beside him but Sihtric was sick with anxiety.
He cursed himself for being so weak. It was getting hard to deny to his friends that there was nothing between you both when he couldn’t even deny it to himself any more. He was ashamed at the tears pooling in his eyes, threatening to spill but he swallowed the lump down and willed them away, just as his father had taught him to.
Be a fucking man, it was drilled into his head from as soon as he was old enough to comprehend and he turned his back to face away from you.
Despite his father’s beatings, despite how much he tried to stomp it out of him, Sihtric was soft and he was so painfully in love with you that sometimes his chest physically hurt with longing.
It was pathetic- he was pathetic.
Sihtric drove you back to your apartment the next morning and he was unusually quiet the whole ride back. Usually he would come up for a coffee, but when he didn’t unbuckle his belt and left the car running, you uneasily retrieved your overnight bag from the trunk of his car.
“Thanks for the ride,” you smiled, testing the waters and he gave a tight lipped smile in response.
“Of course, it’s what friends are for,” was all he offered but he didn’t get out to hug you the way he usually did and you climbed the stairs to your apartment with a feeling you couldn’t quite place brewing in your stomach.
You and Sihtric did everything together. You had a weekly cinema date without fail once a week, every week, since you met. Sihtric was a film fanatic, he consumed movies both in the theater and on his own in his apartment. You suspected it was because he was never allowed to watch films as a kid and now he was making up for lost time. You knew just enough about his childhood to know that it was not a happy one. His mum had died, leaving him to be raised by an abusive father and an older half brother who relished in torturing him. Sihtric never went into specifics but you knew that he had gone hungry and dirty for periods of time and the thought of it broke your heart. Because Sihtric was an absolute light in your life, whenever you were with him you were carefree, his joy for the little things in life was absolutely contagious, like the first time you had made him try cotton candy and you watched his eyes widen and a huge grin broke out over his face as he devoured it. But your absolute favourite thing you did together was the spontaneous late night drives in Sihtric’s car with the windows rolled down, singing along to whatever playlist was on, and on so many of those rides you wondered what it would be like if Sihtric were to put his hand on your thigh, or throw his free arm over your shoulder while you snuggled into his side, but you had to quickly dismiss these thoughts, because he had made it abundantly clear time and time again that you were his best friend and you would never risk losing him because of your little fantasies.
Except it felt like you were losing him already since the night of the party...
You collapsed onto your bed and checked your phone for the thousandth time, to find nothing, no memes, no song recommendations, no silly pictures, Sihtric had sent you absolutely nothing in the last four days and you were trying not to let it upset you, but you couldn’t help but feel hurt. This was the longest you had ever gone without hearing from him, he always texted you multiple times a day, and now you were getting radio silence.
You picked up the stuffed bear that Sihtric had won you at the fair a few months back and gave it a squish sadly, it still smelled vaguely of Sihtric's cologne after you had begged him to spray some on him.
You quickly snapped a pic of you kissing its cheek and sent it to Sihtric.
‘We miss you x’
Sihtric opened the message and sighed, how was it possible to be jealous of a damn stuffed toy.
You bit the inside of your cheek, you could see he had opened the message but no little dots popped up to indicate that he was typing back.
You let thirty minutes pass, feeling sick with anxiety the whole time, and when he still hadn’t replied you climbed under your sheets and switched out the lights.
Sihtric felt bad opening your message and not replying, but he sipped his drink as Osferth returned from the bathroom, face briefly lighting up when Osferth announced this round was on him.
While you lay in bed trying to figure out why you were crying.
‘Wish it was me there with you x’
He typed after a few hours, and deleted and typed again, before he accidentally pressed send in it his drunken stupidity. He fumbled to quickly unsend it, but the blue tick lit up indicating that you had read it.
Your heart hammered in your chest, as you considered what you wanted to say, once you crossed this line, you weren’t exactly sure you would be able to put the genie back inside the bottle.
‘I wish so too x’
After what seemed like an eternity he replied,
“Goodnight, y/n, Sweet dreams xx”
Sihtric was avoiding your messages and dodging all your calls. Your heart broke even more when you saw an insta story that Osferth shared of him, Finan and Sihtric at the movies, your stomach sank down to your toes because you had always thought that was yours and Sihtric’s thing.
You messaged him for the umpteenth time that week, ‘Have I done something wrong?’ But just like the previous messages you had sent, he opened but never replied.
Your heart was breaking, you were getting up going to work, and coming straight home and getting into bed. Your anxiety was the worst it had been in years and you kept a hold of your phone, willing a notification to come through anything at all that would show you Sihtric was still your friend. You were going insane at night trying to figure out what you had done wrong, had you offended him somehow? Or worse, had he sensed your feelings for him that night at Uhtred’s and just didn’t want to have the awkward conversation, or let you down gently.
But the final nail in the coffin came when Gisela texted you late on the Saturday exactly two weeks after the night Uhtred had decided to stir the shit.
‘I’m so sorry you couldn’t come tonight. It’s not the same without you!’
Your head was whirling, and you felt like you were going to be sick, until our phone lit up again.
‘Sihtric did invite you didn’t he?’
You could have landed Sihtric in the shit by telling her that he hadn't, but you knew Gisela would gut him from the inside out if she knew he was treating you like this, so to protect him you replied.
‘Of course! I’ll catch you next time xx’
Sihtric sat on his reading chair, the lamp in his living room the only thing lighting his apartment. His stomach was twisted up in knots and it wasn’t from the alcohol, it was because of you. He’d been avoiding you for weeks now. Dodging your calls and making excuses to not meet up and when that wasn’t enough he just stopped replying to you altogether. Radio silence.
He knew you didn’t deserve to be treated this way, and if it had been any other man treating you like this he would have offered to kick the shit out of them, but he couldn’t risk you seeing him this way. He had tried for so long to pretend that he had no feelings for you, to act as if you could just be friends, but ever since the night Uhtred had spoken his feelings out loud it was like a damn had burst and trying to bury his feelings now felt like trying to stop the tides with his bare hands.
The crippling fear of losing you sent him into an avoidant survival state, he had never been shown a healthy way to navigate conflict or loss and so he did what that scared little boy had always done. He hid.
He sipped his brandy,enjoying the way it burned. The ‘what ifs’ swimming around in his mind. What if I were just honest with her? What if she turned her face away in disgust? What if she cast me aside? What if she couldn’t overlook his confession and ever be his friend again. Or, and his heart picked up speed, what if she felt the same?
He was pulled from his thoughts by a gentle knocking on his door, he was tempted to ignore it until the knocking progressively became more insistent.
Finally relenting he opened the door to see you before him, face a mixture of hurt and anger, and red eyes a dead give away that you had been crying.
“We need to talk,” you shook and Sihtric mindlessly stepped aside and allowed you to come in, but he remained frozen to his spot by the door when you reeled on him.
“I don’t understand Sihtric, you’ve been avoiding me for weeks now. You are my best friend and I feel like..I feel like I’m losing you, and I don’t know what I’ve done!”
“Nothing!” Sihtric choked, shaking his head furiously “You’ve done nothing wrong. It’s me. I’m going through some shit and I just- I needed to deal with it alone.”
The anger softened from your face but the hurt remained, “You know you can talk to me Siht, so you don’t have to go through anything alone. You can tell me anything. Including- if you don’t want to be my friend anymore.”
He didn’t.
He didn’t want to be your friend anymore, he wanted to be so much more, but the fear of rejection kept him rooted to the spot.
“I’m sorry,” he choked, voice wobbling. “I’m still learning how to communicate, I will try to do better for you I promise.”
“Sihtric,” you cried crossing the floor and pulling him into a hug, “You don’t have to try. You just have to be you,” you muttered as your arms locked around his shaking form.
“I just really missed you,” you whispered into his hair, the smell of his apple scented shampoo that you loved filling your senses.
“Gods, I missed you too,” he replied, shaking, but grasping on to you.
And so things went back to some form of normality but the weight of two unspoken confessions were hanging over the friendship.
You were officially invited to group outings again and you and Sihtric slipped back into a somewhat familiarity with each other.
Except Sihtric felt like he was trapped in a snare. Every time you spoke, his eyes lingered on your lips imagining what they would feel like to kiss, what they would look like wrapped around his- he shook his head before his mind could even wander down that path. He was consumed with longing for you, day and night it was all he could think about, but fear of losing you always knocked whatever bravery he had within him to tell you the truth.
Until the night he saw you across the dancefloor, dancing with another man, head thrown back in joy as he moved his body in time with yours to the beat and before he could even think straight he was marching across the floor and grasping your arm.
“Sihtric?” you questioned face full of worry.
“Please, I need to talk to you?” he begged and you followed him in an instant outside, completely ignoring the call of the man you had been dancing with moments ago.
Sihtric paced back and forward in front of you and you tried to reach out a hand to steady him but he swatted it away.
“I have to tell you the truth,” he finally rushed “I can’t hold this in any longer. I’ve tried, believe me I’ve tried so hard to- but I can’t do it anymore.”
“Sihtric?”
"-I’m in love with you y/n. Painfully. I’ve been in love with you for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been avoiding you because I know you don’t feel the same and you just want us to be friends, but I can’t pretend anymore.”
You were silent for a moment, considering him, “Who said I just wanted to be friends?” you asked bewildered.
“What?” Sihtic reeled, mismatched eyes boring into yours in surprise.
“Sihtric Kjartansson," you sighed "It is you who wanted us to stay friends. I have always wanted to be more.”
“What? He repeated face scowling trying to understand.
“At Finan’s birthday last year, you took the forfeit over the dare to kiss me, because you said you didn’t want to kiss a friend. From that night on I tried to put my feelings to bed.”
Sihtric pinched the bridge of his nose in disbelief “I didn’t kiss you that night because once I kissed you I would never have been able to stop.”
“Then I really wish you had kissed me that night,” you smiled and took his hand “In fact I think you should kiss me now.”
He didn’t need to be told twice , he surged forward, cupping your face in his hands and kissed you.
You looked up at Sihtric through hooded eyes, his naked torso glistening with a sheen of sweat. His slender body and muscled arms looked like a god carved from marble in Ancient Greece and you were willing to get down on your knees and worship.
He placed his thumb on your bottom lip, sliding your lips open as he inspected your waiting form below him.
“So beautiful,” he mused, dark eyes raking over your body “So beautiful and mine.”
You hmmd against his thumb, and he moved to hook his finger under your chin forcing you to look up into his eyes “Say it,” he commanded “Say that you’re mine.”
Your eyes fluttered with adoration and the hazy smile that crossed your face had Sihtric’s pulse racing “I’m yours Sihtric,” you promised, “Only yours.”
“Let me show you,” you begged and you moved with him towards the bed, where he sat looking unsure for a moment, until you pressed a gentle hand to his chest, motioning for him to lay back. Others who did not know Sihtric like you did might have expected a dominant, possessive lover but you knew him better than anyone else in the whole world.
What he needed was to be taken care of, to be shown he was worthy of love and given it freely, and reassured that you were going nowhere and now that you’d had this taste of him you truly would never leave him again.
You were lovedrunk as you kissed down along his neck, collarbones, his chest and followed down the length of his abdomen, before finally taking him in your mouth.
He was a whimpering, moaning mess beneath you and he surprised even himself when he eventually found the strength to stop you, picking you up and flipping you over before slipping inside you with a gasp.
He picked up a pace that had you gasping and grabbing at his strong back for something to hold on to. Something to stop you falling off the edge. When you could finally not hold on any longer, urged by Sihtric’s whispers for you to let go, you did, seeing stars as you gripped him through his own release.
If there was one thing you had learned about Sihtric it was that he truly meant what he said when he told you that he would never have been able to stop with one kiss, the man was insatiable. His lips or hands were always on yours and you did not know where he found his stamina for in the bedroom but one thing was for sure, he had never felt this kind of love in his entire life and he was never letting it out of his grasp again.
Uhtred's heart pounded in his chest as he spotted the soldiers on horseback emerging from the road bend. There was no time to waste.
"Run!" he shouted urgently, his voice leaving no room for questions. Finan and Osferth quickly grabbed Aethelstan by the hands, while Uhtred swiftly turned and scooped up Aelfwynn in his strong arms. Without further ado, they darted off the road into the tall grass of the meadow to their right. Eadith, Stiorra, and the young Uhtred, followed suit. You hesitated for a moment, bending over with your hands on your knees, desperately trying to catch your breath as your gaze locked with Sihtric.
"Come on, there's no time to waste," the urgency in his eyes turned into worry. "Are you okay? Can you run?" he asked, taking a step in your direction and extending his hand.
You had been relieved to escape the woods and feel a solid road beneath your feet again after the exhausting days you had endured. A nagging sense of discomfort had slowly settled into your body, initially dismissed as the expected toll of running through fields and woods on foot, and sleeping under the open sky with moss and fallen leaves as your only mattress and blanket. It had started as a subtle ache in your joints, as if they were encased in lead, protesting every movement and sending sharp, shooting pains through your body. Gradually, this discomfort had escalated into a more pronounced pain, and this morning, you had woken up tired and weak, your skin hot to the touch.
But the last thing you wanted was to reveal your weakness and become a burden or an obstacle to others. You held responsibility for the children – Aelfwynn, Aethelstan, and Stiorra, though she pretended to be grown up already. You had been caring for them in Saltwick for over a year, and your bond had deepened in ways you never could have anticipated. You loved and cared for them as you were sure you would for your own children, should you ever have any.
Aelfwynn, with her bright eyes and insatiable curiosity, had a remarkable talent for bringing warmth even to the coldest of days. She was a quick learner, possessed a genuine thirst for knowledge about the world, and you found yourself marvelling at her growth. Her laughter was as sweet as a melody, and her hugs felt like a soothing balm for the soul.
Aethelstan, the thoughtful and introspective one, had a heart overflowing with kindness. His gentle spirit served as a constant reminder of the goodness that still existed in the world, even during the most challenging times. His trust in you warmed your heart.
Stiorra, the spirited and adventurous one, injected an element of excitement and unpredictability into your lives. Her infectious laughter and boundless energy were both exhilarating and, at times, exhausting. You embarked on countless adventures together, and with every scrape and bruise she earned, you felt it tug at your heart.
You loved these children unconditionally, celebrating their victories and providing comfort during their moments of sadness. You worried about their futures and dreamt of the wonderful lives that lay ahead for them. Your heart had expanded to encompass these precious souls, and you couldn't fathom a day without their laughter, quirks, and love. So when Uhtred and his men insisted on fleeing, you didn't hesitate for a moment—you were determined to accompany them.
And then, of course, there was Sihtric, the handsome Dane with the most unique haircut you had ever seen in your entire life. You couldn't deny the initial unease you felt around him when he was assigned by Lord Uhtred to guard the children alongside Finan and Osferth in Saltwick.
His quiet demeanour and the way he observed you had initially sparked suspicion. Sihtric's deep and enigmatic eyes seemed to track your every move, their intensity sending a prickling sensation across your skin. It was as if he could see through you, discerning something you couldn't quite grasp, leaving you feeling vulnerable and exposed.
However, as the days passed, Sihtric's presence transformed from a cause for suspicion to a source of reassurance. His reserved nature concealed a kind heart and a readiness to lend a hand whenever necessary. He frequently offered assistance with the children, whether it was helping Aethelstan carve his wooden horse or taking Stiorra on playful adventures in the woods. Aelfwynn, in particular, had taken a liking to him, finding solace in his company.
Your initial unease gradually faded as you witnessed Sihtric's interactions with the children, noting his patience and caring nature. Imperceptibly, you grew quite fond of the gentle and kind-hearted man hidden behind the rugged exterior of a fierce warrior.
You vividly recalled that evening, as if it had occurred just yesterday. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, orange glow over the tranquil garden where you had found your moment of peace and tranquillity. The children were fast asleep, their dreams filled with the day's adventures.
As you sat there, lost in your thoughts, you received a pleasant surprise when Sihtric quietly joined you, taking a seat beside you. His presence was a welcome one, and the two of you relished the serene beauty of the fading daylight.
For a while, you enjoyed each other's company in silence, with only the gentle rustle of leaves in the evening breeze breaking the stillness. Sihtric's gaze lingered on you, and you could feel his eyes on your face. It was an intense scrutiny that made your heart flutter, and you couldn't resist stealing a glance in his direction.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Sihtric broke the silence, his voice low and sincere. "You are truly remarkable," he began, his words carefully chosen. "The way you care for Aelfwynn, Aethelstan, and Stiorra, it's... inspiring."
Your cheeks flushed with a mixture of surprise and gratitude. "I appreciate your kind words, Sihtric," you replied, genuinely touched by his compliment. "But I'm just doing what comes naturally. They've become like family to me."
Sihtric nodded, his gaze still fixed on you. "It's more than that. You have a gift, a way of making them feel safe and loved. It's a rare quality, and I admire it greatly."
A sense of warmth enveloped you as you listened to his words. There was a vulnerability in his expression, as though he had revealed something deeply personal, and you appreciated his openness. As you gazed into Sihtric's eyes, you saw a sincerity and warmth that had been hidden beneath the surface.
The moonlight bathed the garden in a soft, silvery glow, casting enchanting shadows on the two of you as you sat side by side. Touched by Sihtric's words and captivated by the way the moonlight highlighted his handsome features, you found it difficult to tear your gaze away from him. He appeared so strong and reassuring in the tranquil evening light, and you couldn't help but feel a flush of desire as you imagined his strong arms around your waist and his full, sensual lips against yours.
As the thought danced through your mind, your heart quickened, and you couldn't help but let your hand fall gently onto Sihtric's, a subtle invitation that carried a world of unspoken desire. Your pulse raced as you leaned in closer and inhaled his breath, your faces just centimetres apart. You were so close that you could sense his muscles tensing and his breathing becoming more strained. The moment seemed so perfect and you closed your eyes, anticipation hanging in the air.
Sihtric shuddered, his body tensing under your touch. With a sudden, trembling voice, he stammered, "I... I should excuse myself. It's getting late, and I should check on the horses."
His sudden withdrawal and the tremor in his voice took you by surprise. Confusion and disappointment washed over you as Sihtric hastily retrieved his hand and stood up, his gaze avoiding yours.
In the space of a heartbeat, the enchanting moment was shattered, and you were left sitting alone in the garden, the echoes of what might have been hanging in the air. Sihtric's abrupt departure left you feeling both bewildered and disheartened, wondering what had caused him to recoil so suddenly.
The next day, an awkward tension between you and Sihtric hung in the air like an unspoken barrier. His once-warm presence had become elusive, and you couldn't shake the growing sense of embarrassment stemming from the events of the previous evening. You certainly didn't want to ruin the budding friendship that had developed between you, especially considering the deeper feelings you had begun to hold for Sihtric.
As the next day proved to be no better, you found no recourse but to approach Finan.
"Finan, may I speak with you about Sihtric?" you began hesitantly, unsure how to start the conversation.
"Lady, you have a question? Just go ahead and ask," Finan replied tersely.
"I'm not sure how to put it," you admitted. "It seems I've upset Sihtric, but I'm at a loss as to what I've done wrong. We had a pleasant conversation about the children last night, and then he abruptly left. Now he's avoiding me."
Finan set down his sword and turned to you, his eyes scrutinising your face with a stern expression that made you slightly uncomfortable. Your cheeks flushed, and you averted your gaze, beginning to regret initiating the conversation.
"So, he finally mustered the courage to speak to you," Finan remarked with a chuckle. "I don't believe you've done anything wrong. Lady, that lad has a heart of gold, and he's been smitten with you since the moment he laid eyes on you. But, let me put it this way - he struggles with recognizing his own worth. It's not for me to share his story. Perhaps he will, when the time is right." Finan continued to fix you with a penetrating gaze, and you began to feel increasingly uneasy. Thinking the conversation was over, you turned to leave.
"Lady," Finan called out quietly, the mischievous glint in his eyes replaced by a stern and earnest expression. "Please, don't give him false hope if you're uncertain or not serious. It would shatter him, and believe me, he doesn't deserve to have his heart broken again."
You lifted your eyes to meet Finan's, and the genuine care and concern emanating from him filled you with profound appreciation for the bond that united these men.
"I promise I won't," you whispered.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows over the estate, you decided it was time to address the issue directly and made your way to the stables, a place where you knew Sihtric often sought solace and solitude. There, you found him leaning against a wooden post, his gaze fixed on a distant point, his expression holding a mixture of contemplation and melancholy. Seeing him in this state tugged at your heart, as you approached cautiously.
"Sihtric," you began softly, "is there something I did or said that disappointed you? I can't help but feel like something has changed between us."
He turned to look at you, his eyes full of surprise. For a brief moment, silence hung in the air, as if he was struggling to find the right words. You took a deep breath, moved a step closer, and gently placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Sihtric," you said softly, your voice brimming with sincerity, "I genuinely like you, and I don't want any awkwardness between us."
The instant your hand made contact with his shoulder, Sihtric visibly flinched. His eyes widened in surprise, and it appeared as though he had momentarily forgotten how to breathe. His chest rose and fell in a rhythm that mirrored the quickening of his heart.
A medley of emotions flitted across Sihtric's face, but most of all a complete disbelief.
“You like me? No, lady, that can't be,” his response caught you off guard. You blinked in astonishment and then, almost instinctively, asked, "Why wouldn't I like you, Sihtric?"
He let out a self-deprecating chuckle. "I'm a Dane," he said, his voice tinged with bitterness. "A bastard. A man without a future, without a place in this world. Certainly not someone deserving of being liked, especially not by a lovely Saxon lady like yourself. I apologise if I overstepped the previous night," he continued sincerely.
"It won't happen again," Sihtric added, turning as if he intended to leave.
Surprised by his words, you stood there, gazing at this grown man who appeared simultaneously strong and fearless yet vulnerable and lost, like a small child. At the last moment, you extended your hand, grasping his arm.
"Sihtric, please, wait. Why are you saying this? I don't care that you're a Dane. And, by the way, I'm not a lady. You are so much more than your heritage. You're gentle and caring with the children, always respectful and ready to help. You have a kind heart, and that's what truly matters. I like you. I like you a lot, and not just as a friend…" Your voice lowered, and you felt your cheeks flush crimson as you whispered the last words.
If anyone was overstepping, it was unquestionably you. However, in this moment, all you wished for was for this incredibly sweet man to see himself through your eyes—worthy of admiration and affection, regardless of his origins or the challenges he faced.
The weight of the conversation lingered in the air as Sihtric processed your words. There was a quiet pause between the two of you, with the gentle rustle of hay in the stables the only sound. Then, as if compelled by an unseen force, Sihtric's hand reached up to cup your chin, gently tilting your face upward until your eyes met his. In the dim light of the stable, his gaze held an intangible twinkle of delight as he tenderly caressed your face with his thumbs.
"You are so breathtakingly beautiful," he whispered. "And you're so kind and sweet…so loving and caring. You don't understand… there's nothing I can offer you in this life… you deserve something better."
You gazed into Sihtric's mismatched eyes, a tentative smile spreading across your lips as you took his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze before pressing his palm against your cheek, nuzzling into it.
"Sihtric, please don't feel compelled to make a decision on my behalf," you said with a warm smile, and in a sudden rush of emotions you lifted yourself onto your tiptoes and gently pressed your lips against his.
A deep sigh escaped Sihtric as he felt your lips brushing against his own. He cradled your face in both of his palms, pulling you slightly back, his eyes wide open, scanning your features with a mixture of disbelief and bewilderment in them. Your heart quickened, threatening to burst from your chest. You feared you had made a fool of yourself, that he was about to reject you, and tears welled up in the corners of your eyes.
With a soft, lingering touch, Sihtric leaned in, his lips meeting yours in a gentle and tender kiss. It was a kiss filled with sweetness and delicacy, infused with awe and adoration. You had never been kissed like this before. The gentle, hesitant touch of Sihtric’s tongue, the way he held you in his arms, the soft moans of delight escaping his lips, his trembling fingers cupping your cheeks – every small detail, every motion of his body spoke of hope and unending love, promising something more—a connection you had never before experienced but were willing to embrace. It swept away your breath and set your heart racing with an unseen intensity.
This was just the beginning of what felt like a fairytale for you. Later that night, as you shared your bed with Sihtric, revelling in his passionate yet gentle and affectionate touch, as he worshipped your body, you silently pondered whether to thank God or the Devil for bringing this handsome and kind-hearted man into your life. Even if loving him meant being condemned to eternal flames, you were ready and willing to embrace it.
—-----------------------------------
Panic flickered in Sihtric's worried gaze as he noticed your distress and rapid breathing.
However, the approaching sound of hoofbeats spurred you into action. With a determined effort, you summoned all your strength and began to run. You grasped Sihtric's hand for support, and together, you followed the rest of the group into the meadow.
The rush of adrenaline coursing through your veins fueled your determination, urging you to push harder. You sprinted up the hill and down to the riverside, maintaining your pace alongside Sihtric, whose firm grip on your hand served as a silent source of strength and encouragement.
The cool breeze against your face and the rhythmic thud of your footsteps helped you push through the weakness and nausea that threatened to overwhelm you. You knew you had to keep moving, to remain with the group and ensure everyone's safety.
Upon reaching the riverside, it became evident that crossing it was not an option. The riders pursuing you drew nearer and all eyes turned to Uhtred, awaiting a command, a solution, or even a miracle if need be. However, there was no easy answer he could provide. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds against the armed horsemen approaching, Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, and even Osferth instinctively formed a protective barrier before the children, Eadith, and you, ready to defend you all against any impending threat.
The riders closed in, and suddenly the physical and emotional strain of the sudden sprint and the overwhelming events of the past moments took their toll on you. Your strength reached its limit, and with a gasp, you collapsed to the ground, your legs no longer able to support you.
Your vision blurred as you lay there, the world spinning around you. The sound of Uhtred's voice, commanding his men to protect the children with their lives, grew distant and muffled.
The ground beneath you felt cool and unforgiving, and as darkness threatened to engulf your consciousness, you desperately clung to the unreasonable hope that Uhtred and his men would see the children through this.
Sihtric's eyes widened in panic, his heart aching as he watched you collapsing to the ground. Every muscle in his body tensed with an overwhelming desire to rush to your side, but before he could make his move, your gaze locked with his, and you vehemently shook your head. With the last remnants of your strength, you whispered urgently, "Children, you must protect the children."
The pain etched on Sihtric’s face as he continued to watch you, torn between his instinct to run to you and your final plea to safeguard the children, was palpable. He nodded in understanding, your words echoing in his mind, just as the first arrows from the approaching riders sliced through the air.
You heard a sound of someone falling to their knees near you and closed your eyes as you felt two small gentle hands, you unmistakably recognised belonging to Stiorra, cradling your head and placing it in her lap. And then everything went black.
—---------------------------------------------------
As you slowly stirred from unconsciousness, you found yourself lying in a bed, your body aching and feverish. Memories of the riverbank and the perilous encounter with the riders rushed back, leaving you wondering how you had ended up here.
Turning your gaze, you saw Sihtric sitting by the bedside, his eyes fixed on you with a mix of relief and concern. Weakly, you attempted a smile, wanting to reassure him despite your own discomfort.
Sihtric's expression softened as he noticed your effort. "You're awake," he said softly, his voice filled with genuine relief.
You nodded, your throat dry and raspy, making it difficult to speak, the pain in your body serving as a constant reminder of the ordeal you had endured.
"How are you feeling?" Sihtric inquired, his concern deepening.
With a faint, reassuring smile, you whispered, "I've been better."
Sihtric let out a relieved chuckle, the tension in the room slightly easing. He reached out to gently brush a strand of hair from your face, his touch gentle and caring.
"You gave me quite a scare," he admitted, his voice filled with gratitude. "But you're strong, and you'll recover."
You wanted to reply, but your head began to spin, and a thick fog enveloped your thoughts, pulling you back into oblivion.
“Hey, stay with me,” Sihtric's voice broke into a silent whisper, laced with anguish and concern, but you no longer heard him. He grasped your hand and lifted it to his lips, placing soft kisses all over it.
“You are strong. You have to keep fighting. You can’t leave me now. I just found you, the missing part of my heart. Don’t you dare to leave me,” he murmured, his voice choking. An overwhelming feeling of helplessness threatened to engulf him. He wanted to protect you, ready to fight an army if necessary to ensure your safety, willing to give his life for yours. And there he was sitting at your bed, unable to ease your suffering, to shield you from the illness that had taken hold of your body, slowly sapping your strength and vitality.
Sihtric remained seated, his unwavering gaze fixed on your face, his hand gently resting on your forehead, sensing the heat of your fever. From time to time, he leaned in to plant soft kisses on your hot forehead, his fingers caressing your hair, whispering his plea softly into your ear, repeating it over and over in the hope that somehow, in your unconscious state, you could still hear him. “Please, don’t give up. I need you. I need you to stay with me… please.”
As hours passed without any sign of your awakening, and your fever continued to rage, Sihtric mustered the courage to step away from your bedside and seek out Eadith and the others.
"Tell me how bad is it? And how is Aelfwynn?" The anguish etched across Sihtric's face, his eyes desperately searching Eadith's for a glimmer of hope, made her heart ache.
Eadith had witnessed it—the love-stricken look in Sihtric's eyes each time he cast a glance in your direction. Still struggling to fully believe that you reciprocate his love, he savoured every smile, every affectionate word and every gentle gesture you extended toward him. It was a love that bordered on adoration, a sweet madness that granted him purpose and strength.
Now, he was on the verge of losing you. You were slipping away. You were dying. Both of you, as Aelfwynn's condition was no better. Eadith recognized the subtle, almost imperceptible shift when the body ceased its resistance and surrendered. You both had crossed that threshold.
As much as she wished to offer some glimmer of hope or reassurance to Sihtric and the others that everything would be alright, it had long surpassed her ability to provide relief for you and Aelfwynn. It was now in the hands of God, and she envied Osferth, whom she knew was currently praying in the small chapel. His unwavering faith in God's benevolence gave him strength, whereas she had lost her own faith long ago.
Eadith slowly shook her head, averting her gaze. Words that had begun to form on her tongue froze, unable to escape her lips. To tell Sihtric the truth would mean killing him too; to cut the last, tenuous thread of hope that kept him going.
"I've been doing my best to care for them," she finally said softly. "Their fevers are high and show no sign of abating. Their strength continues to wane. They require rest and proper care."
At least it was not a complete lie, but it was far from the whole truth. It was as close as Eadith could bring herself to utter.
A faint glimmer of hope flickered within the depths of Sihtric's eyes. He clung to those last words like a drowning man clutching a small piece of driftwood, hoping it would carry him to shore, even if that shore seemed impossibly distant. They require rest and proper care - and they will manage it – those were the words he wanted to hear and thought hearing them, even if they never left Eadith’s lips.
There was no way to tell him that it no longer mattered, that the battle was already lost.
Eadith nervously chewed her lower lip, her hands aimlessly tugging at her dress. The room was filled with suffocating silence. Her gaze wandered to Uhtred, who paced around the room like a caged beast, his steps heavy and agitated. He clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white from tension. Several times, he raised his fists to his mouth, biting down on his index finger, his brows furrowed, and his jaw clenched tightly.
She knew he was angry; it radiated from his every pore. He was angry at Edward for his weakness, his premature and ill-conceived actions driven by the fear of losing power. While Edward's intentions were to reunite the realm, his actions were actually tearing it apart. The young king's feeble attempt to resolve his problems by burdening unprotected children with them angered Uhtred more than anything else.
But among that Uhtred was angry at himself. He was furious with himself for not foreseeing this, for failing to anticipate the chaos that had unfolded, and for lacking an immediate solution. He was desperate to shake off this unreasonable feeling of being responsible together with the overwhelming need to take action, to do something, even if he didn’t know what. But he couldn't. He was a man of action, a man of solutions and inability to provide for one drew him to the brink of madness.
While Uhtred continued to pace, his breath becoming shallow and uneven, Eadith's gaze shifted to Finan, who sat alone at the table. His posture slumped, his hands clenched and unclenched, and his gaze was distant and unfocused, as if he were trapped in a labyrinth with no way out. He was afraid. Eadith had come to know this fearless warrior well by now and her heart was full of awe and admiration toward him. Yes, he was fearless, fearless in the battle, ready to stand up against as many men as needed, yet he was afraid—afraid of losing his friends to the spreading sickness, and desperate to protect them, yet fearing he might fail.
—--------------------------------------------
"I don't want to leave her, Eadith. You don't understand, nobody does. I can't leave her. She's everything I have," Sihtric's voice quivered, his hands shifting from the hilt of his axe, as if seeking reassurance, to his dishevelled hair, where he pulled hard before returning to clench around the axe hilt again.
"You won't be leaving her, Sihtric. You'll be trying to save her. We need a safe passage to Winchester and a proper healer for her, for both of them. Uhtred's plan is the best and only option we have. You're not abandoning her, Sihtric," Eadith spoke with conviction, though she couldn't help but despise herself at this moment. Was it a lie she was telling Sihtric? Not entirely. The last days had been full with half-truths, and this was just one more, but why did it hurt so much? Will he see her alive again? Probably not. But staying here will not change that, while leaving might bring a big change for the whole kingdom. If there was one man to bring Aethelflaed and Edward back on the path of peace, then it was Uhtred and he needed Sihtric.
Sihtric cast one final, longing glance at the bed. You looked too small in it, your eyes closed, your face pallid. He raised his hand and took one hesitant step toward you, as if wanting to stroke your head one more time before leaving. Turning abruptly and storming out of the room, Sihtric buried his teeth in his clenched fist with such force that blood started to trail down his arm.
“I’m not leaving you,” he whispered to himself, “You need a safe passage to Winchester, and I’ll secure it for you, no matter the cost.”
So my husband and I were talking about how I start fights and then loop him in and make him finish/end them and that got me thinking... So here is a post no one asked for about TLK character/ships and fights :)
Sigtryggr x Stiorra
Stiorra starts fights 9/10 times. Sigtryggr? Starts them that 1/10 time but mostly he flips a coin to decide if he's talking his wife and the poor fucker she's going after down OR if he's throwing punches that day.
Uhtred x Gisela
....Uhtred starts fights...and finishes them...Starts them for her often. Gisela used to try and stop him, but eventually just learned to take a seat and let go of the leash.
Aelswith x Alfred (Uhtred x Alfred)
Aelswith starts fights. Alfred just sits back and takes his wife's side let's her do what she needs to do....until he starts a fight...in which case Aelswith (and Uhtred) ends it.
Brida x Ragnar
Brida starts all of them. Ragnar lets go of the leash immediately and eggs her on.
Thyra x Beocca
Beocca starts fights for his wife.
Finan (x Ingrith/Eadith)
Starts fights.
Sihtric (x Eahlswith/Sidgeflaed)
Stops fights / Ends fights. Except when someone bad mouthes his wife. Then he puts the fucker through a wall.
Osferth
Causes fights. Makes others end them for him.
Aldhelm
Stops fights.
#feel free to add#or challenge my interpretation#when i say stops - i mean they calmly intervene to prevent things from escalating#when i say ends - i mean they throw punches and win#the last kingdom#tlk opinions#tlk headcanons#stiorra uhtredsdottir#sigtryggr ivarson#sigtryggr x stiorra#uhtred of bebbanburg#gisela harthcnutsdottir#alfred of wessex#aelswith of wessex#brida#ragnar ragnarsson#thyra ragnarsdottir#father beocca#finan of irland#sihtric kjartansson#osferth of wessex#aldhelm of mercia#guess im feeling courageous today and also posting this
Cruel Summer
damn seasons part 1
pairing modern!Eadith x ofc
summary This could be a sweet friends to lovers story, if only the summer wasn't so cruel.
warnings angst/fluff, slight mention of aggression, implied smut/suggestive
word count 5.4k
a/n i used some stefanie's pics on the moodboard where she is blonde, but eadith still being a redhair right. this story takes place in no specific country or city. also, there's no blood feud between families in this, kjartan is tove and sihtric's father but he does not take place in the story, they actually live with their mom and stepdad, its not important at all, just the backstory i had created.
Eadith is her best friend. Tove have met her when she was 15, Eadith has just moved into her town and she started to study with her brother, Sihtric, and his band of friends, who are also Tove's friends despite being 2 years older than her. It was naturally, the boys —that includes Aethelflaed, 'there is nothing ladylike in the way she throws a punch' as Uhtred says — brought her to their circle of friends and as she was closer in age with Tove, their friendship just happened.
Since the first day it has been them, Sihtric, her big brother, is friend with Uhtred and Finan since they were babies, and when Tove was born, the boys were enchanted with their little princess — as Sihtric said, and later swore they will always protect her at all costs. The years went by and nothing changed, it was Sihtric, Finan, Uhtred and Tove, the princess in danger who they, the fearless warriors, need to rescue, as they always play. Until new faces were showing up, Aethelflaed, and her half-brother, Osferth joined the band when they were about 11, 10 years old. They were inseparable, and their families being close contributed to it.
When she first met Eadith, Tove felt something different about her, but she couldn't know what, so she let it go, she kept to herself this unfamiliar feeling everytime she was on Eadith's presence, in order to forget about it. Until her second year at uni.
Tove was studying ASNC - anglo-saxon, norse and celtic -, a subject she was always interested as her family has a big norse inheritance, and because of that she planned to do her master program in Denmark. In some way Tove could handle the studying life with their nights out, at a pub, a club or a party.
It was at one of those parties that everything happened. Tove was way too drunk, trying to find her way to a bathroom and she found one at upstairs of the house. What she didn't know was that Eadith was following her, trying to look after her, so when she opened to go out and found Eadith leaning on the doorway, waiting for her, Tove couldn't contain her surprise.
— Eadith! Hey, what you're doing here? — Tove asked leaning on the doorway as well.
— Tonight is my turn to keep an eye on you. — Eadith said, with a playfull tone, but she was serious. They all have this kind of agreement that at least one of them won't get too drunk for emergencies, it's their way to look after each other.
— I'm not even that drunk! — Tove's voice was disagreeing with her. — You can go and have some fun.
— I am not on the mood for party at all, I'm good here.
With a courage coming from nowhere - all the alcohol she consumed - she came closer to Eadith. — Well, then let's have some fun the two of us.
Before Eadith could say anything, Tove's lips were crashing hers. At first she didn't stop, because she's been wanting this for so long and Tove's soft lips against hers was definitely the kind of fun she was needing. But then she remembered Tove was drunk and broke the kiss.
— Okay, lady, I think it is time for you to go home, come. — Eadith said, still close to her, fixing her hair.
Tove didn't protested and Eadith took her to Sihtric, and they both agree to go home and left the party.
When the next day came up, it was like nothing had happened. Eadith didn't touch the topic and Tove didn't remember, yet. It took her a day or two to realise that it wasn't a dream, - c'mon, she had dreamt of this too many times to realise it had truly happened - she had kissed Eadith. And she wanted to do again.
However, she couldn't. Eadith is her best friend, she couldn't risk ending up their friendship for something silly like this. So she let it go, again.
The realization came several months later. Tove was one month away from finishing her degree and started to organize her life to her Master program. She and Eadith still being friends and very closer, Eadith thinking that she forgot about what happened that night, and Tove pretending she actually forgot.
One day Tove was walking on campus towards the library when she saw Eadith talking with a guy, he was obviously flirting with her and she was smiling to him. Tove got angry, she rushed to the library, and let the tears fall silenty. She didn't like this feeling, she didn't like what this feeling means. So she masked it as stress coming from the exams.
Tove was miserable for days, and everyone noticed, including Eadith, but she got nothing from her.
Sihtric started to get worried about his little sister, he knew something was hurting her. It was a normal thursday, Sihtric was at home, so he found it strange when Tove showed up at noon when she was supposed to be in her lecture.
As soon as she arrived home, Tove rushed to her bedroom and lock herself there. Of course Sihtric followed her.
— Tove, open the door, talk to me. — he asked at the door, for the third time.
— I don't want to talk, Sihtric, leave. — she said and he could notice by her voice that she was crying.
— C'mon, at least let me be with you, you don't need to say anything now.
No answer came immediately, but after some time he could hear that she unlocked the door. When he enters in her bedroom, she's already back at her bed and he lays down besides her, giving her a tight hug and she cried more.
— You say you're fine, but I know it isn't true. Don't tell me it's the exams, I know there's something more. You don't need to tell me anything, just don't lie. — Sihtric gives her a kiss on her temple — But if someone did anything to you, that you need to tell me. — he said on his protective brother tone.
Tove let out a little laugh. She has the best brother in the world.
— It's Eadith. — she says after she calmed down — She's going out with that guy.
— And what's the problem?
— The problem is that I love her! — she exclaimed — Not like you do, I love her.
Sihtric didn't know what to say, he only knew that advising her to talk about it with Eadith wouldn't happen. Tove is a stubborn bastard, just like him.
He just said to her that if it's meant to be, it'll be. Sooner or later. And Tove cried at that, 'cause she know it won't.
Her final exams have passed, as Eadith's and Osferth's. —The three of them were the only ones that still at uni, as the others had graduated a year before.— And that was a reason to party, they said.
So there is Tove, at a friday night getting ready to go to some club they chose. She picked out a little black dress, one of the milions she has and was finishing her makeup when Sihtric knocked on her door.
— Are you ready to go?
— Yep — she answered after applying her lipstick. — You’re lucky I'm on the mood for party tonight, or I'd make it the worst night ever.
— You don't think I know? That's why I suggested we'd go tonight, I see you're in a good mood.
— So we should stop wasting time and go.
Well, she was on a good mood, really. But not anymore.
Tove was all happy and excited, and suddenly her feelings got all blue after Eadith arrived with Bresal, the guy she is going out with. It made her blood boil seeing him holding Eadith's hand, it should be her instead.
Sihtric looked at her, worried, as Eadith started to introduce Bresal to the others, he saw Tove giving her best to look strong as she greeted them, and as soon as they turned their back, he saw how she ran away.
He waited a few minutes to go after Tove, trying to keep up appearances, he saw that some of them noticed Tove vanishing but no one said nothing. Sihtric soon found her at the bar, asking for another drink.
— Tove, we can go home if you want, you don't need to stay. — he tried, approaching her.
— And you don't need to leave just because I'm in this pathetic situation. — she finally says after a moment in silence.
— I won't leave you alone, you're my little sister, I'll ne-
— I'm leaving! — she cuts him.
— What? When? To where?
Before saying anything else, Tove led Sihtric to a more quiet place, so they could talk.
— I wasn't planning to tell you this now, but I was accepted into a master program in Denmark, and I don't know yet when I'm leaving. — she cuts Sihtric again as he tried to say something — Please, don't tell anyone yet.
— It's okay, it isn't my place to tell 'em. And I'll support you in anything you choose. — Sihtric hugs tightly — I'm gonna miss you, you know it, right?
— Of course you will, — she laughs as he pinched her side. — I'm gonna miss you too, but now let's go back before they noticed and before I start to cry.
They came back and acted like nothing had happened, just like the ones who noticed something was wrong. Tove tried not to think so much about anything at all, they went out to club and have a great time, so she will try to do so.
She gave her best trying to keep in the partying mood, but at the moment she left the bar and entered the cab to go home, Tove couldn't hold her tears anymore.
The next weeks was a complete mess, Tove's time was consumed by things related to her master program, she had to plan her moving, check her documents and so many more. Fortunately she had her family to help her, as they're the only ones who knows she is moving. She had planned leaving in the middle of summer, but she had to change her plans due to her friends announcement after her graduation ceremony, that they're travelling this summer to the beach. And this isn't the kind of event she can refuse to go.
So she got her things packed, both for their trip and for her moving, and just as she finished, Tove heard the bell ring. She wasn't expecting no one to show up, so she was really surprised to see Eadith at the other side of the door, and even more to see the tears in her eyes.
— Oh! Eadith, what happened? — Tove asked worried, and before she could get some answer Eadith throw herself in Tove's arms. And Tove could never deny a safe place to her.
She could feel Eadith grabing her shirt to keep her closer, and the absence of an answer made her even more worried, if it was possible.
— Hey, love, it's alright, — Tove whispered while caressing her hair, trying to make her calm. — Please, come in so you can tell me what happened.
Eadith noded and stepped back to follow Tove into her house. She led her to the couch and brought her to sit close to her. Eadith didn't say nothing on the first moment, but after a time playing with Tove's wristband, she started,
— I, I had an argument with Bresal, — Tove could feel her blood boil by only hearing his name — He got too hostile over me, and.. and he bruised me.
She motions to her wrist and Tove could see the bruise there, she had to control herself to not scare Eadith with the anger she's feeling now.
— I didn't know what do or where to go, I could only think of you so I came here.
— Eadith, you're ok now, right? I'm glad you came to me, you will always find a safe place with me, you know it? — Tove only felt Eadith noded while hugging her. — I swear if I see that turd he'll regret everything he has done in his life. No one dares to raise a finger to my pumpkin.
Eadith laughed at the silly nickname Tove had gave her years ago, when they met. —Your hair reminds me of pumpkin pies, so it's fair for you to be my pumpkin. — she said.
Tove felt relieved to achieve her goal, Eadith now is more calm and hearing that laugh made her heart warm. She could spend a lifetime hearing that laugh, seeing her girl happy makes her the happiest person. Her girl. Stop it, you fool, she's not your girl. Tove thought and regretted at the same moment.
Eadith got way more calm after spending some time with Tove, so she insisted to her to stay for the night. Eadith couldn't say no.
And when Sihtric went to talk with his sister after arriving at home and found the two cuddling while Eadith was already asleep, he didn't say anything, just smiled at Tove.
On the next day, they were all meeting to head to the airport, Tove and Osferth checking everyones documents and necessary items, as they always do before their trips, when they saw that turd, Bresal, passing by with a black eye and Eadith could only see a glimpse of a smirk on Tove's face while she continues to do her things, pretending she didn't see it.
The flight wasn't so long, and soon they arrived at their destination. The house they're staying was beautiful, close to the beach, it was perfect, except for having only a few rooms so they will all share. It wasn't a problem at all, Uhtred and Sihtric with their girlfriends got a room each, Finan and Osferth was sharing another, Tove and Eadith would also share the room and Aethelflaed was the only one to get a room only for herself. — I rented the house, so I get the room for myself. — she said.
It was okay for Tove to share a room with Eadith, nothing that they haven't done before. The real problem was that the room have just one bed. So Tove will have to share a bed with Eadith for three weeks, and she doesn't know how strong she can be, having to sleep so close to the woman she aches for. It will be a cruel summer with her.
The first nights were a bit awkward, but no one said nothing until they got used to it. A couple days have passed since they arrived, they had spent most of their days at the beach, and wandering around the small city they're staying at. Now it's evening and her friends are getting ready to go out for dinner, Tove have already decided she wasn't going with them tonight, and someone have asked her to check if Eadith is going with them.
So that's what Tove was going to do when she entered their room at the same time Eadith was leaving the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, looking for her clothes. Tove's mind was getting far from what she was supposed to do it, she could only think how she wanted to touch her pale skin, and trace her fingers the same path as water drops. She was so lost in her own mind that she didn't noticed Eadith calling her.
— Tove, everything's alright?
— Oh, yeah yeah, — she could feel her cheeks getting warm after being caught — I just came to ask if you're going out for dinner or if you're gonna stay?
— I'm gonna skip it today, I need to get a rest, 'm still too tired from the beach.
If I could do everything that I want, the last thing you would get is a rest. Tove thought. Gods, I need to stop thinking about this.
She only nodded and left, heading downstairs to tell her friends they're staying. After getting herself a quick snack, Tove went back to her room and found Eadith brushing her hair.
— Oh god, you scared the shit out of me! What are you doing here? — she asked exasperated, making Tove let out a laugh.
— I'm sorry, bae. — Tove got closer and left a kiss on the top of her head, — I didn't want to go out neither. — she said while looking for some comfortable clothes to sleep.
After a while, they were both lying in bed, Tove was trying to read but couldn't focus on other thing than Eadith turning from side to side. She left her book at the bedside table before turning to Eadith.
— Can't sleep?
— No. — she pouted her lips and Tove couldn't think of anything cuter than this.
— Come here, then. — Tove opened her arms and Eadith accepted her embrace. She felt her body tensed but as she started caressing her hair, she could felt Eadith's body relaxing.
The silence remained for a while, Tove thinking that Eadith had already slept but suddenly felt her body tensing again.
— Tove? — she asked with a low, muffled voice, as her face was pressed against Tove's neck, which made her feel shivers.
— Hmm, yeah?
— Do you remember that last party at Erik's? — now it's time for Tove's body tenses.
— I, I.. Yes, I remember.. Wh-what about?
— When you.. when you kissed me, — she moved to look at Tove's eyes. — Did you really meant to do that, or.. you were just drunk acting?
— Eadith...
— No, tell me, I need to know Tove, please.
Tove hesitated a bit before answering, — I did mean to do it.
— Then why did you pretend you didn't remember? — Eadith frowned her eyebrows.
— 'Cause.. I wanted to do it again! It was easier to pretend I didn't remember and didn't want to do it again. It was easier to try to forget than bring this up and ruin our friend-
Her words were cut off by Eadith's lips crashing against hers. Tove was too surprised to react at first, but she didn't miss a second after realizing what was happening. She had Eadith's lips against her owns again. And this time was better than the first.
Tove didn't waste more time, guiding her hands through Eadith's body until it reaches her waist, pulling her even closer. She let out a soft moan when Eadith pulled her hair, making her smile against Tove's lips, happy to cause that reaction on her.
Tove's hands found the way under Eadith's shirt, the contrast between her cold fingers and the warm skin made the ginger gasp, which opened the way for her tongue between Eadith's lips, deepening the kiss even more. Tove could die on her lips and she wouldn't care, she desire this for so long.
She grasps all flesh she can reach, not wanting to let it go, she wants to live this forever, nothing seems to be enough. She can't get enough of Eadith. It was all so new, the shape of her body. Making out with a woman it was definitely better than she imagined. She needs to have her at least once in her lifetime, before she goes.
— Love, you don't need to rush, we have the whole summer, hmm. — Eadith says after breaking the kiss, her fingers now caressing Tove's face.
And Tove didn't have the courage to tell Eadith they didn't. She didn't have the courage to end what had started now.
So she just muttered in agree, letting go.
The next day, Tove is awakened by the sunlight hitting her face, making her grumble. She misses the feeling of Eadith's body pressed against hers so she quickly get up, which cause Eadith to laugh from the other side of the room.
— Calm down, love, I didn't go anywhere, — she says climbing one the bed coming closer to Tove, giving her a soft kiss. — Good morning. — she whisper to her, putting her hair behind her ear.
Tove turns her face to kiss Eadith's hand, — Morning.. — she muttered against her palm. — I missed you next to me, it was sooo comfortable. — Tove's voice was a bit hoarse from the sleep, and that made Eadith feel something, definitely.
— I wish we could stay like this but you need to get up, Finan came to say we're going to another beach today, which is far so we need to leave earlier.
— Just more five minutes, please.. — she asks, snuggling in Eadith.
— It's tempting, you know, but we really need to get ready. — she says and leaves the bed again. — And if you don't get up, you won't be sleeping with me tonight.
It was comical the way Tove got up so quickly.
They didn't tell anyone what was happening between them. They use to be this close since always, so it wasn't awkward to see Tove and Eadith holding hands, cuddling, living in their own world. But Sihtric noticed it was something more, and he was sure something was happening when he saw the love bites. And Sihtric knows his sister well enough to know she didn't said anything about leaving.
One night they were all at the house deck, chatting, drinking, playing some card games until it was very late and one by one started to retire to their rooms, only lefting Eadith, Tove and Sihtric. The ginger one whispered to Tove she'll be waiting her and said good night to Sihtric before leaving. Tove blew a kiss to her and was smiling at the direction she went, until she heard Sihtric calling her.
— So, what's up between you two?
— Hm, what d'you mean?
— C'mon, I'm not blind, are you two finally together? How did that happened?
Tove sighed, knowing she couldn't hide anything from her brother even if she tried.
— It just happened. We didn't talk about what we are, we just enjoying each other, it's summer after all.
— So, you did tell her you're leaving, right?
— I didn't..
— Tove, you- — Sihtric started but Tove cut him off.
— Don't say it, I know I'm being stupid, but I can't tell her, I cannot not have this with her, at least for now. — Sihtric was trying to say something, and Tove didn't let him. — I'm a coward, I know and I don't need you saying this and how wrong I am. — Tove didn't noticed the tears coming to her eyes and starting to fall. — I just.. I have longed this so much, I need to have this with her even if it's going to end soon, but I can't leave without it.
Sihtric came closer and held her, wiping her tears. He waited until she calm down to say something.
— I won't say what you want to hear, because I care for you and I want you to do the right thing. And I also care for Eadith, so I can't let you carry on with this and not tell you to talk with her. I know you won't gave up moving, it's your dream after all, and she would never ask you to do so. So please, tell her, I know she will understand. Tell her before it's too late and you hurt both of you.
Tove didn't tell her.
She couldn't tell her when she entered the room and saw Eadith in a tiny purple matching underwear, waiting for her in their bed.
The only things to leave Tove's lips that night was praisings and soft moans.
She was longing for Eadith, but she wasn't rough on her. Tove loved her on the most pure and passionate way, lustful though. She needed to let Eadith know how much she loves her through her acts.
Every single touch, kiss, bite, was full of Tove's passion for her. Tove could only hope Eadith would get it everytime Tove looks up grinning like a devil after bringing her to the edge, she hoped Eadith would get how much she worshiped her.
Time just flew by and the last week came. They're a few days away from going home so Tove decided to spend more time with Eadith alone. The redhead was almost sleeping after returning from the beach when Tove called her, telling to get ready.
Half an hour later, they're finally arriving at their destination.
— It's a date then, uh? — Eadith said after many times trying to know where they're going.
— Oh, shut up! — Tove said playfully, intertwining their hands again to lead her on the rocky way.
— It's so cliche of you taking me to a date on a secret place, you know that, right?
Tove stopped and turned back to her, her hands now cupping Eadith cheeks, which turned red after Tove looks at her with such intensity, she leaned on her, their lips now brushing against each other. — I know.. — she whispered and gave in, kissing Eadith deep. Tove will miss that so much.
They only broke the kiss when breathing was needed, the two girls panting heavily after an intense kiss. If Eadith's cheeks were already red, now they're even more.
It was only then that Eadith noticed where Tove had take her. They were at a viewpoint at the rocks of the beach, the sun was now setting and they had a privilege view of it, which made the place even prettier. But still, for Tove, the most beautiful thing to see there is Eadith. Her hair and skin were glowing against the sunlight, her eyes shining, completly enchanted by the view, and Tove completely enchanted by her.
— I found it earlier this morning when I went out, I thought you'd like to see. — Tove said only loud enough for Eadith to hear, not wanting to break the atmosphere.
— Oh, I loved it, It's so pretty. — Eadith answered, still focused on the view.
— Yes, so pretty... — Tove let out a little laugh, taking Eadith's hand in hers again, bringing it to her lips and leaving soft kisses all over it.
Tove led her to a bench there, bringing Eadith to sat on her lap, rounding her waist and resting on the crook of her neck. They just sat there for a moment, the quietness only being broke by the sound of the waves and the gasps and soft moans as they kiss. After breaking the kiss, they just stayed there in silence, their foreheads resting against each other, their breaths becoming just one.
— Tove, I think I- — The brunette shut her up by kissing her. She knew what Eadith was about to say, and she couldn't let her do it.
— There's no need of words, babe. — she whispered and Eadith just nodded and kissed her again.
Tove wish she could say it, and hear Eadith saying it, but she just couldn't. Not when she's about to leave.
When the day came, Tove gave her best to hold the tears when she look at their room and the beach for the last time. She was too quiet on the way to the airport and Eadith noticed it, and tried to cheer her up, — The summer is not over yet. — she said. But it is over to Tove, the moment she gets off that plane it is over.
While in the flight back to home, Tove decided to enjoy these last hours with Eadith, with too many kisses and sweet words, which made Finan change seats with Osferth, saying he couldn't stand one more minute with 'these two love birds', making them laugh.
And too soon, the time has come. As soon as they landed, they took their baggages and headed to the arrival gate to meet Ragnar and Brida, who were to be their ride to home, but they were all surprised when they met not only Ragnar and Brida, but also Tove and Sihtric's parents.
They all greeted each other and was talking about how the flight was, until Aethelflaed noticed the amount of baggage next to Tove's parents.
— Wait, are you going to travel again? — she asked looking between Tove and Sihtric.
— No, not them. I am, actually. — Tove answered starting to feeling nervous.
— What? To where? — Finan asked confused.
Tove could feel her hands shaking before she answer. — A University in Denmark accepted me in a master program, so.. I'm moving.
— Why you didn't tell us such good news? — It was time for Osferth to ask and he came to give her a hug, congratulating her.
— Yeah, and why didn't you tell us you were going today? — Uhtred questioned.
— I didn't want to ruin the trip mood making it a farewell trip. I know you will miss me, but don't worry, I'll be back and you won't even notice I was gone. — Everyone laughed at her coment and they all started to say goodbye, wishing her good luck on this new journey.
The only one who didn't make a move was Eadith, she was still shocked at the news, not even knowing how to act. She waited everyone talk with Tove before approaching her.
— Tove, hmm, can we talk? In private? — she asked with a low voice, uncertain of what to say.
— Oh.. Sure, yeah, let's.. Let's get a coffee. — Tove felt like she was freaking out. She was regretting so much not telling her she was leaving.
When they left, Tove could feel the gaze of all her friends, the atmosphere was now heavy and they sensed it.
They went to one of the millions cafeterias at the airport, Tove got a black coffee for her and Eadith's favourite tea before they went to a table.
Tove was about to say something when Eadith started, — So that's it, you're leaving?
— I have to.
— After all these weeks, you didn't think about telling me that it would be over as soon as we came back?
— Look, Eadith- — Tove's words were cut off by Eadith.
— No, after all these nights we spent together and now you're just leaving? Did I mean nothing to you? Did that night mean nothing to you? I gave myself to you and now what?
— Babe, please, hear me. — Tove took Eadith's hands in hers but she pulled it back.
— Don't call me that.. — Tove's heart broke even more after hearing that, she could feel how Eadith was broken because of her.
— I'm sorry, I know I should have told you, look, I tried to but I couldn't. You mean everything to me, every night we spent together mean everything to me. But I just couldn't leave without knowing what it is to be with you. I know I'm stupid and a coward, I swear I know, — Tove had to stop to breath and she noticed the tears were falling down her face, — Believe me, I hate myself for hurting you, but after having a glimpse of what it is to be with you, I couldn't stop, 'cause I'm so fucking in love with you that I wouldn't stand leave without have even kissed you again.
— I was afraid of telling you because I was afraid of loosing you. I need to go but I also need you, and this isn't the kind of thing I can choose between. Now I see I chose the worst way to go and not only lose you, I hurt you, so I'm sorry.
— I would never ask you to leave your dreams behind, Tove, you know that. I wouldn't want to choose me over your dream, you didn't need to choose between one or another, you could have it all. — She got up from her seat and approached Tove. — But I'm afraid you can't have it anymore. Farewell, love, enjoy your time there, I know you'll do your best. — Eadith left a last kiss on her forehead before she walked away.
And Tove? She stayed there for a while, tears still falling, too many eyes on her, before she decided it was time to go. So she left, she said goodbye to her friends and family one more time and boarded to Denmark.
A Place to Call Home
Note: a big thank you to @canyonmoon-2 for this request, and even more for being so patient! I know it's taken me so long to write this, I am sorry for that, but I really hope you'll like this 🖤
Reblogs & comments are greatly appreciated 🖤
Warnings: brief mention of losing loved ones at the start, other than that; all fluff!
Pairing: Sihtric x you (f)
Summary: you lived a domestic life with Sihtric during the sickness, after you had only just met.
Word count: 2,9k
Masterlist
Your village had been burned down in an attempt to try and stop the sickness from spreading. You had gotten away in time but didn't have a place to call home anymore, and in the end, the flames hadn't stopped the illness from spreading further.
You wandered the deserted lands for days on your own after you had fled, not encountering a single living person until you eventually crossed paths with an odd group during another hot and sunny afternoon.
The strange mixture of travellers you encountered consisted of a shy monk, a loud Irish man, a handsome Dane, a few youngsters and a kind Saxon lady. Finan, the Irish man, asked where you were heading to after you had introduced yourself, and you confessed you weren't sure where you were going. He then asked you if you were good with children, to which you answered that you used to take care of your younger sister but that you had lost everything and everyone way before the sickness had even appeared. And after Finan had consulted the monk and the Dane for a brief moment, while the Saxon lady stood protectively in front of the children, you were invited to travel with them, which you gladly accepted.
You were happy to find yourself afoot with the group, as your spirits were lifted by simply being in the presence of the living, and the fact that these living hadn't lost their hope and own good spirits did you well too. You got along with all of them, and Eadith, the Saxon lady, was someone you immediately felt at ease with. You also discussed your role in the group with her, and as Eadith would make sure to look after the youngsters during the night and to tend to possible wounds or illness, you agreed to prepare food for everyone and keep an eye on the young ones during the day. During your travels you enjoyed the banter between Finan and Osferth, the monk, and your heart filled with joy at the laughter of the younger companions. But you quickly realised you couldn't help but let your eyes wander to the handsome Dane, Sihtric.
Initially you had tried to keep your distance from Sihtric, as he was rather rough looking, but when you suddenly had to share a room with him once you arrived in Wollerton for a well-needed respite, things changed quickly. The wooden house you all stayed at was big, but so was the group you travelled with. And after you had claimed your room for the next few days, you found out that Sihtric had claimed that very same room too. Finan enjoyed the awkward moment when you and Sihtric tried to figure out what to do next, as there was only one bed and you both didn't want to give up the room.
You didn't know if the people you had only just met could be trusted at night so you wanted your own room, but Sihtric didn't want to give up the room because he did not want to sleep with Finan or Osferth. And as Eadith would already share her room with the kids, Sihtric didn't want that room either. Eventually Sihtric offered to share the room, but not the bed, to which you agreed after the Dane said he'd sleep on the floor.
You were pleased to find out Sihtric was rather quiet and one to keep his word, and he also swore to protect you whenever the need would be there, so you finally slept decently for the first time in quite a while. But before you dozed off, Sihtric had carefully asked about you and your story, and he in return was willing to share a little about himself and the people he travelled with. You believed you were amongst good people, and the stories that you were told made you only more interested in the beautiful and kind stranger who slept next to your bed, on the hard wooden floor.
The following day you tried to find your way around the house, like everyone else, and you quickly found out that it was nearly impossible to keep an eye on those kids on your own when they were awake. Finan and Osferth were out near the woods, practising their sword skills, while Eadith took a well deserved nap after having been up for most of the night, taking care of poor Aelfwynn who had fallen ill.
You ran around the house, the skirt of your linen dress clutched in your hands while desperately trying to keep up with the kids and their shenanigans. It was a tiring task, and on top of that everyone also depended on you to prepare food for them, and you were running out of time to put dinner together. With flushed cheeks and strands of hair stuck to your sweaty forehead, after you had chased the kids outside, you found Sihtric in the living room area on your way to the kitchen. He was comfortably sitting with his legs spread out on the table in front of him, and he enjoyed some fresh water from a golden cup while he laid back.
'Sihtric?' you carefully interrupted his leisure, 'I… I'm sorry to ask, but could you perhaps help me?'
'Help?' Sihtric asked with a light frown, and he sat up straight, 'of course, lady. What is it you need?'
'It's the kids,' you confessed with an awkward chuckle, 'they are… I can't keep an eye on them all at once, and Eadith is resting. I just managed to make them play outside in the garden, because I also need to prepare food, but-'
'I will send them to Finan and Osferth,' Sihtric said with a soft smile, and he immediately jumped up to act on his words.
'Thank you,' you sighed with relief.
You began gathering the ingredients for the broth you were to make for dinner while Sihtric handled the kids outside and herded them away from the house. And when he returned, he quietly circled around in the kitchen behind you while you were oblivious, and he noticed you looked tired and a little stressed out. He saw the amount of unchopped vegetables on the wooden counter and watched you slice the rabbit meat, which was caught yesterday, as fast as you could while you had placed a large pot above the fire.
'Lady,' Sihtric said softly, yet he still startled you.
You jumped at his sudden presence, almost dropping the knife you held, and chuckled with a gasp as you turned around to face him.
'I'm sorry,' he said, 'I did not mean to scare you, I only want to ask if you need a hand.'
'It's okay,' you smiled and hid your flushed face, 'I just didn't hear you come back. But,' you paused and looked at the amount of unprepared food, 'I could use your help, yes.'
'Say no more,' Sihtric smiled and gave you a curt nod, then reached behind his back to unsheathe the dagger that was attached to his leather belt, 'I'll take care of those vegetables.'
You and Sihtric then prepared the food in silence together, enjoying the peace and quiet in the large house without the children running and screaming around. You worked smoothly beside each other in the kitchen, giving each other an occasional smile in passing and sometimes a lingering touch when handing something, which warmed your cheeks every time. And you had the same effect on Sihtric, his rosy cheeks betraying the pleasant warmth he felt whenever he was close to you. But you both left it unspoken and linger in the air around you.
You and Sihtric gave each other an understanding glance once you heard the children approach the house again after several hours, along with Finan and Osferth, knowing that the peacefulness you had experienced while making food was over now. And you all ate dinner in the large yet cosy dining area. The room was filled with chatter and laughter while you and Sihtric looked at each other a little more than you did at the others, as you sat on opposite ends of the oaken table, smiling faintly and as discreetly as possible to each other amidst the company of everyone else.
Later that night, after Sihtric had helped you wash the plates and cups and when darkness had taken over the sky outside, you both retreated back to your shared room. You talked quietly for hours, while the weather outside changed and thick dark clouds covered the Moon and her silver glow. The clouds brought rain, and soon after the drizzle had turned into big drops, thunder joined and rolled through the sky, making for a warm summer's night storm. Sihtric enjoyed the almost deafening thunder and the way the wooden beams vibrated at the heavy sound, while you clutched your sheets with sweaty hands and hid your face underneath.
You betrayed your own fear when you let out a sudden gasp once another bright flash spooked you, and it caught Sihtric's attention.
'Afraid, lady?' his voice was a calming remedy amidst the stormy night.
'I'm okay,' you said, but the tremble in your voice told him you were lying.
Sihtric didn't only hear it in your voice, but he also sensed your fear in the room. And while the thunder continued to terrorise the night, Sihtric quietly reached up the bed with his hand, in search of yours, and he didn't let go of your sweaty palm until he was sure you were fast asleep.
And since you had been so tired from your first full day around the children, you didn't even hear them cry at night a few rooms down the hall, as the weather had spooked them all too and Eadith had to hush them back to sleep.
The next day wasn't so different from the day before. You tried to keep up with the kids, which was impossible, while everyone else seemed occupied again, except for Sihtric, who found you plucking apples in the garden at noon. You were once again oblivious that he was there, as his feet were always quiet when he walked, even when unintentional.
'I was thinking,' he began, and he stopped talking when you jumped up and almost dropped the basket of apples, 'I'm sorry.'
Sihtric reached out, preventing the basket from tumbling out of your arms. But you couldn't catch your breath after your initial scare, as you suddenly looked up into his sparkling clear mismatched eyes while you stood closer than ever before.
'It's… it's okay,' you breathed and nervously clasped onto the basket, 'I, eh… what were you thinking of?'
'Huh?' Sihtric murmured and looked puzzled while he got lost in your eyes, 'oh, I… I was thinking that maybe we could take the children today and go for a hike with them, up the hill.'
'Oh,' you smiled, 'sure, yes, but… the food-'
'I already asked Eadith,' Sihtric said, excitement twinkling in his eyes, 'she will gladly prepare the food to have a break from them, so you and I can take them out for the day.'
You didn't mind spending some more time with Sihtric, and the children could use a good walk too in order to tire them out, so you agreed without any hesitation.
And not much later you and Sihtric strolled upwards the hill, through the tall grass, while the kids ran and wrestled each other ahead of you. It was another warm sunny day, but that didn't stop Sihtric from reaching out and holding your hand without saying a word. Your fingers were intertwined as you reached the top of the hill together, and there you laid down in the grass, under a thick tree from where you could watch the kids play at a safe distance. You both mindlessly leaned into each other as the time passed, gazing into each other's eyes while hands dared to discover each other's clothed bodies while talking about your pasts and eventually your futures. You both blushed as you explored his strong arms with your gentle hands, while his rough fingers lightly caressed your exposed ankles.
'Do you want pups yourself?' Sihtric asked.
'One day,' you smiled as you looked at the kids, 'hopefully I will be blessed one day, yes. But I'll need a husband first,' you said and looked back at him, 'what about you?'
'Yeah,' Sihtric chuckled, trying to be nonchalant while his cheeks warmed up again, and not because of the sun, 'I hope to be blessed too one day, with a wife and some of those little ones.'
You observed Sihtric while he nervously plucked at the tall grass beside him, biting down on his lip as he seemed to fight a smile.
'Do you need my help tomorrow?' he asked, 'with anything?'
'Maybe,' you shrugged lightly, 'I can always use some help preparing food or watching them,' you nodded towards the kids.
'I will help you,' Sihtric smiled, 'anytime.'
You smiled at him, and then he suddenly reached for your chin and leaned in, capturing you in the softest and sweetest kiss possible, which weakened your body and mind entirely until you were rudely disturbed when one of the youngsters fell and began to cry.
'I'll have a look,' Sihtric said as you attempted to get up, and you sat back with a smile on your face as you watched him tend to Aethelstan's bruise.
In the following days you and Sihtric grew closer as he continued to help you cook, clean and to look after the kids. Every night Sihtric would hold your hand while you still slept separately, and soon you began to steal quick and gentle kisses while preparing food in a quiet house. Finan had caught you two kissing in the kitchen several times already, and he only smirked whenever you and Sihtric backed away from each other quickly when being caught, pretending as if nothing had happened.
And Sihtric still maintained his bond with Finan and Osferth, in between spending time with you, occasionally ending in a brawl with them after some ale had been consumed late at night while the children were asleep and the grown up had a moment to wind down. But you somehow knew how to rile Sihtric back in before those friendly brawls would get out of hand. And once back in your shared room, you soon started to make out with him for hours on end. On the bed, on the floor, on the small table in the corner, it didn't matter to either of you as long as you got to be close after being around each other the whole day yet not being able to be openly intimate yet.
And it seemed that every day Sihtric became more and more adjusted and fond of the domestic life you lived temporarily together. You eventually shared the bed and woke up together, after which you'd make breakfast for him and the others, look after the kids, make lunch, take the kids for a hike or teach them how to defend themselves, followed by making dinner together and ending the day falling asleep together after hours of passionate kissing and even lovemaking.
And Sihtric soon figured out that this was what had been missing in his life, and what he had been unknowingly searching for ever since he was old enough to be called a young man; a place to call home. He started to crave to become a father of his own pups, even though he cared for the kids he had travelled with as if they were his own. But even more so he craved to be with you, and the idea of making you his wife and you carrying his pups drove him to near madness. And one day he simply couldn't contain his hope and excitement anymore when you were making dinner together for the last evening in the house, as you were to travel further by morning.
'Be my wife?' Sihtric blurted out while you were chopping meat together.
'I- what?' you gasped and chuckled, then frowned and looked at him, 'Sihtric?'
'My wife,' Sihtric said hoarsely, his nerves suddenly taking over, 'will you be my wife and have my pups?'
His big mismatched eyes darted all over your face while he awaited your answer in silence, and you both dropped your knives on your counter. You blinked rapidly, confused and overwhelmed but also taken by excitement and love. Because you loved Sihtric. You had fallen in love with him so quickly, and so had he, and there was nothing you wanted more than to be with him for the rest of your life and to raise your kids together. And so you smiled, widely, while tears crept up in your eyes and you then swung your arms around his neck.
'That's all I want,' you murmured while your face was buried in his chest.
'Then that is what you will have,' Sihtric smiled as he held you tightly wrapped in his arms, 'my lady.'
And with that promise, Sihtric had given you a place to call home again. A place where you finally belonged and felt safe again after everything, and that place was in his heart, which would always beat a little faster when you were around him, and he would love you and care for you and protect you until the day his heart was to stop.
Do Not Go Where I Cannot Follow:
Part 1:
Finan x Reader
A/N: A massive thank you to @axe-does-writing for beta reading this for me, you're the best 🥰
This is set during season 4 as the Coocham squad are travelling through Mercia to avoid the sickness.
Warnings: symptoms of sickness, angst, keeping secrets, established relationship
Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters or GIF
You had lost count of how many days you had been travelling, trekking through Mercia on foot with the children, trying to avoid danger and the dreaded sickness.
It was only due to Eadith's bravery that you had managed to survive for this long; standing up to her brother so that you might escape. Though this brought you all some semblance of safety, you knew it would not last. Not if Edward’s men caught you. With this in mind, you decided to keep moving until you could find somewhere safer to rest.
Your feet had begun to ache, and Aelfwynn had started to become a dead-weight in your arms. It was a strain you weren’t sure you could continue with in your present state, but you were determined not to say anything until you absolutely had to; everyone had enough to deal with without you becoming a burden too.
Releasing a slow, measured breath, you adjusted Aelfwynn in your arms, trying not to show how much you were struggling. Luckily, with only Osferth behind you, you had managed to avoid detection.
Until now.
“Give her to me.”
Looking to your left, you found Osferth had sped up to walk beside you, already holding his arms out ready to take Aelfwynn from you. The look on his face brooked no argument and you could not find it within yourself to disagree with him. For all he was such a sweet and caring man, he could be very stubborn, a trait you were sure he had picked up from your husband, Finan. Without any complaints, you carefully transferred the young girl into his arms, making sure her head was comfortably settled on his shoulder before continuing to catch up with the others.
You hadn’t realised how much your slow pace had caused you both to fall behind.
“Are you alright?” he asked gently as you walked.
“I’m fine,” you smiled.
“Y/N, don’t lie to me, you’re as pale as a ghost! You’re getting sick aren’t you?”
“Keep your voice down!” you berated him, glancing to the front of your group to see if anyone had heard him.
You knew it was true, you had begun to feel progressively worse over the last two days. Your whole body ached, you had a persistent headache that had started to pound behind your eyes and you were sure you had the startings of a fever. Truth be told, all you wanted was to curl up in a ball and sleep for a week, but you knew that wasn't going to be happening any time soon.
“We don’t know if it is the sickness, it might pass in a day or two.” You weren’t sure who you were trying to convince, Osferth or yourself as you twirled your wedding band around your finger.
Osferth noted the action, guessing where your thoughts had led you. “He deserves to know. If you are unwell - if it is the sickness - he would want to know. He would be heartbroken to think you could not tell him. Do not ask me to keep this from him.” he begged.
Releasing a long sigh, your gaze lifted to your husband at the front of the group, watching as he carried Aethelstan atop his shoulders. Your heart squeezed in your chest, overflowing with the love you felt for him. He had been excellent with the children during the journey. You hoped that one day you would be blessed with your own children, he would make an excellent father.
“I know, but I can’t tell him, and you cannot either. He would freak out, he needs to focus on Uhtred, the children and getting us all to safety; he cannot do that if he is fussing over me.”
“Finan always worries for you regardless, it is his nature to worry over those he cares for. You know, when we are away, you are all he talks about, all he can think about is you: what you would be doing that day, whether you were well, or thinking about the day he can return home to you.” he lectured.
It made you smile to know that even when you were parted his thoughts still turned to you, the same way yours turned to him.
“Even so, I beg you not to tell him, if this does pass in a few days then there will be nothing to worry about.”
“And if it does not?”
“Then I will cross that bridge when I get to it.” You ended the discussion, seeing a small village come into view up ahead, hopefully where you could get some rest for a while.
With everyone on edge already, Finan's sour mood and near constant anxiety about the sickness had started to grate on everyone's nerves, though everyone knew he didn't mean it - he was just terrified, having seen its effects before.
Having reassured him multiple times over the course of your journey, you had discovered what really had him in such a state of panic: The one thing Finan wanted to do was to protect his family. To protect you, and make you happy.
But this? This he had no control over. That is what terrified him. That he could not protect you from this.
That was your main reason for not telling him of your illness. To know that you, his own wife, had the dreaded sickness. It would break him. You would not do that to him.
— Time Skip —
You had all safely settled into the village of Wulfrunetun, having managed to gain a few hours of rest while you planned out your next move. Aelfwynn’s condition had deteriorated in the last few hours, the poor girl barely able to keep her head up from exhaustion. You all hoped that with some rest she might start to feel better.
You had managed to get some rest in the shade outside, where it was cooler, trying to reduce your progressing fever. You felt rotten, your skin felt slightly clammy to the touch, and you were certain you could feel a bubbling in your chest whenever you breathed too deeply, but couldn’t decide whether that was just your overactive imagination and fear of the sickness playing with your mind. Surely the sickness wouldn’t progress this quickly? It had only been a couple of days since you had started to feel unwell.
“Ah, there ya are. I’ve been lookin’ for ya.” Your thoughts were interrupted when your boisterous husband came bounding through the door, heading over to you once he had caught sight of you, a grin forming on his face.
You forced a smile onto your face, standing up from where you had been resting under a tree. Finan’s arms immediately encircled your waist as soon as you were within arms reach, and you couldn’t help but fall into his embrace, leaning your head against his chest, letting his steady heartbeat soothe your anxiety.
Finan rested his head on top of yours, and the pair of you took a moment to simply enjoy each other's presence.
“You feel warm, are ya feelin’ alrigh'?” he asked, pulling back just enough to look at your face, his eyebrows drawn in concern.
“I'm fine”
“Are ya sure? You've been spendin’ a lot of time with Aelfwynn, I don't want ya to get sick.” He reached a hand to cradle your face.
You let your cheek rest against his palm for a moment, before pulling away and teasingly swatting his hand away from his fussing.
“I promise I'm fine, my love. I have just spent too long in the sun, is all. I would tell you if anything was wrong.”
Liar. The words tasted bitter in your mouth.
“Has Lord Uhtred formed a plan yet?” You asked, hoping to distract him.
“Aye, he has. Uhtred has decided we must travel back to Aegelesburg; Sihtric and Young Uhtred are going to search for Aethelflaed and Aldhelm and bring them to meet us there. We will be leaving soon.”
“What of Aelfwynn? She is not strong enough to travel any further.” ‘Neither am I’ you silently added.
Finan grumbled to himself for a moment, heaving a sigh through his nose. “Osferth and Eadith are goin’ ta stay ‘ere to look after her until things calm down in Aegelesburg, it wouldn’t be safe for her there, even if she wasn’t sick.” He pulled you in closer.
“Then I will stay here with her.”
“Absolutely not! You’re coming with me to Aegelesburg and as far away from this sickness as possible.”
You shook your head, pulling his arms from your waist so that you could hold his larger hands between yours.
“Finan, listen to me. I am still tired from travelling, and I would be glad for some rest. I would be of more use tending to Aelfwynn than I would be to anyone in Aegelesburg. Besides, the situation is still volatile, what happens if it turns into a siege? I would be safer staying here, and coming to you once it is safe.”
“Y/N, do not make me part from ya, please.” He begged, bringing his forehead to rest against yours.
It took everything in you to not break down into tears, but you knew it was better for him to be away from you, at least until you got better.
“I know, I don’t want to part from you either, but you must go, and I will follow as soon as it is safe enough to do so. It won’t be for long.” You murmured.
“Alrigh’” He reluctantly agreed, pulling away and pulling you into a bear hug, his arms completely enveloping you. You felt him press a kiss to the crown of your head.
“I love ya.”
Your heart felt fit to burst, and you blinked away the tears that welled up in your eyes.
“I love you too. Now go and get ready. The sooner you leave and sort this mess out, the sooner we can be together again.” You pushed his shoulder jokingly. He chuckled, letting his arms slip from around you as he headed back inside.
As soon as he was out of sight you slouched, coughing into your elbow to muffle the sound. You could feel the burn of it pulling at your chest, you could taste faint traces of copper in your mouth. It was definitely better that he leaves now.
— Time Skip —
The men were tying their saddlebags to the saddle of their horses, preparing to leave any minute. You watched as Sihtric helped Young Uhtred with his saddle, making sure everything was properly secure. He must have surely been missing his own children, his own wife. A pang of sorrow went through your heart at the thought. At least you got to travel with your husband, to say goodbye to him.
You wrung your hands as you continued to stand on the outskirts of the action, there had been something plaguing your mind over the last few hours, something other than the sickness you could feel creeping deeper into your bones and your secrets from your husband.
“Sihtric,” you called to him, your eyes darting to Finan briefly to make sure he was out of earshot.
Sihtric quickly finished helping Young Uhtred, clapping him on the back as he moved away to talk to you.
“I just wished to say goodbye...” you exhale nervously. You had to ask him - why was it so difficult to ask him?
His mismatched eyes studied you silently for a moment.
“Goodbye” he answered, half a laugh falling from his lips, unsure of where this was going.
Your gaze moved over Sihtrics left shoulder, falling onto Finan as he moved back and forth, finishing his preparations. It was for him you had to ask this.
Sihtric followed your gaze, looking over his shoulder, before looking back at you, questions now very present in his eyes.
“...I know you are not going with him now, but… look after him for me. Lord uhtred will give him something to follow, a purpose perhaps - but he will need you to lean on.” Tears rose in your eyes at the thought, making sure Finan had people to carry him forward if the worst should happen.
“Y/N, what is this about?”
“Just promise me!”
“Of course! I swear it, you don't need to ask.” He looked visibly shaken by your panic, stepping closer to make sure you were ok.
“I know. Thank you.” You breathed a sigh of relief. You needed to pull yourself together, you weren’t gone yet.
“Y/N, please, what is wrong? How can I help?”
“Nothing just - in case things go badly. There is so much that could go wrong.” you answered evasively.
You weren't sure if he quite believed you, there was still the lingering question behind his eyes.
You knew he could tell something was still wrong, he always saw more than was shown, heard more than was said. You supposed that's why he made such a good spy. Thankfully he did not press the matter, instead bringing you in for a hug.
“Everything will be fine, you'll see. Lord Uhtred has not failed us yet.” He looked so sure as he pulled away, for a moment you allowed yourself to hope. Perhaps things would be ok after all. You would fight this sickness with everything you had. For Finan and the rest of your family.
“I know, but you can forgive a wife for worrying.” You joked.
“Speaking of, might I borrow my wife so that I may give her a proper goodbye?” Finan interrupted, a sly grin on his lips. The same flirtatious grin that you had fallen for so many years ago plastered across his handsome features. Sihtric laughed easily, backing away to give you both some privacy.
You fell so easily into your husband's waiting arms, reaching your arms around his shoulders to bring him closer.
You saw Sihtric climb up onto his horse, not moving from your place in Finan’s hold, you call out to him once more.
“Sihtric! Be careful. Look after yourself.”
He nodded at you, looking between you and Finan.
“You as well, both of you.” With that, he urged his horse forward, joining Young Uhtred on the road to find Aethelflaed.
“Well I knew I might have to ward off some men vying for your attention, but I did no’ think I would have to count Sihtric among ‘em” Finan tickled you, just under your ribs, causing you to let out an undignified squeak.
You give him an unimpressed look, before smacking lightly on the arm. You cleared your throat, hoping to make it sound like you were just composing yourself, rather than staving off the coughing fit you could feel burning your lungs, no doubt induced by your scream.
“Oh please, you know I only have eyes for one man.”
“Oh aye? And who might that lucky man be then hmm?”
“Osferth of course! Why else would I be staying behind with him?”
You couldn't help the chuckle that crept past your lips at his shocked expression as he pressed his hand to his chest in mock hurt.
“You wound me! Are ya sure there isn't anything I can do that could convince ya to bestow your affections onto myself?”
“I suppose I could be persuaded.” you raise your eyebrows in suggestion.
“I am nothing if not persuasive.” he lowered his head closer to your own, his lips a hair's breadth away from your own as his tone deepened. The very voice he knew you loved, that could make your toes curl and your pulse race.
Despite the fact you could feel yourself getting hot under the collar, a feeling you were quite sure had nothing to do with your illness at present, you retained steady eye contact, not letting him know how much he had affected you.
“Well, I shall look forward to your attempts to win my favour upon our reunion, husband.”
His eyes lit up a fraction, enjoying the reminder of his title to you. As you watched him, your overdramatic, funny, fierce, loyal and ever-loving husband, you felt yourself fall for him all over again.
“I shall relish the challenge, wife. I will send word soon.” He closed the distance between you, capturing your lips with his own. He cupped your chin with his finger as his thumb brushed over the swell of your cheek, reluctant to part with you.
You deepened the kiss, attempting to pour all of your feelings into it, trying to convey all the love you felt for him and all of the things you could not say.
Eventually, the voice of your lord interrupted your final moments with Finan.
“Finan! Put your wife down and let us be on our way.”
You finally parted from each other, opening your eyes to look at your husband once more. You tried to banish the tears that rimmed your eyes and you prayed this would not be the last time you saw him.
“Be careful,” you whispered into the space between you.
He pressed a final kiss to your forehead, murmuring into your hairline “You too, I love ya.”
“I love you too” you told him as he began to move away, letting your arms slip away from his frame.
He mounted his horse, and Uhtred lifted Aethelstan so that he sat in front of Finan in the saddle before checking on Stiorra and making his way to his own horse.
You watched until the four of them were out of sight, and you felt Osferth’s presence at your shoulder.
“You should have told him.” he chided quietly.
“Perhaps,” you conceded, wrapping your arms around yourself at the sudden chill you felt in your arms.
“I am going to rest awhile, wake me if there is any change in Aelfwynn.”
He watched you go back inside, a feeling of trepidation sinking in his stomach.
