In the summer of 1924, American comics readers met a new kind of heroine: a 10-year-old girl with curly red hair, a wisecracking mouth, and an unshakeable tendency to look on the sunny side of life, no matter how often she’s beaten down. Her name was Annie—“just Annie,” no surname—and she was “just an orphan,” a nobody, really, but she never let her impoverished origins foretell her fate. Annie embodied self-determination; as her adoptive “Daddy” put it, “Annie doesn’t need charity—just give her an even break and she’ll do the rest.”
Nowadays, the Little Orphan Annie comics that Harold Gray drew from Aug. 5, 1924, through his death in 1968 are less well-known than the 1977 musical that adapted the spunky orphan’s story for the Broadway stage, and the 1982 movie that adapted that Tony Award–winning musical for the big screen. But no matter the permutation, Annie has long represented orphanhood—and how to overcome it—in the American cultural imagination. Her rags-to-riches story arc has by now inculcated several generations of children with the values of grit, bootstrapping, and optimism, encouraging a vision of the American Dream that has always been impossible. I really wish that we’d reassess Annie’s iconic status, and not just because it gets orphanhood all wrong. When you really look closely at it, her narrative is plain weird. (Read more at link)
Interesting read. And I agree that we shouldn’t treat children as if they can easily bounce back from trauma. It seems to me instead of bouncing back we absorb it for it to only resurface 10, 20, 30+ years later.

Last weekend I watched “Annie” (1982) Musical/Family
I really like Annie. The songs are great, the dancing is great, the characters are fun, the relationship between Grace, Warbucks and Annie is adorable.
Recommended 9/10

The bees' knees! This week, for the ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE, V and Emily take a trip back 100 years to look at four fandoms that ruled the year of 1924: George Gershwin's jazz, Harold Lloyd's romantic comedies, Little Orphan Annie's laughs, and Babe Ruth's colossal clout. From the amazing breadth of the Gershwin brothers' catalog to the hilarity of what passed for celebrity gossip in Photoplay, from the plight of a little Orphant to the Bambino's birthday party shenanigans, we're celebrating 100 years of fannish passion and what it really means to be a legend that never dies.

JeanMarco in which Jean slowly falls for Marco while Marco always thought they were a couple is so funny to me guys like you don't understand how much I love this concept of, you know,,, Jean having this realization that he's in love with his best friend and getting so anxious about it because what if Marco doesn't feel the same??? Mikasa was proof enough that confessing wasn't an option, he didn't want to ruin their friendship. But man doesn't he love Marco so much.
Meanwhile Marco is like 'Man I wonder what my boyfriend is doing right now' while working on his ODM with Armin. 'I can't wait to spend some time with Jean, maybe we will go star watching tonight'. To Marco they're already married with two kids coming soon. Don't ask him how he gets hold of two kids, he's working on it. The idea is that they are together your honor

Mitch and Roomie have weekly film nights (sometimes 2 a week) and most of the time it's Roomie forcing Mitch to watch musicals they like
Then for WEEKS, MONTHS even, Mitch will be humming songs from wtv they watched. Even if they didn't like it that much, like I can already hear them humming Tomorrow from Annie, just constantly
