Found along Orion's sword just north of the bright Orion Nebula complex, these reflection nebulae are also associated with Orion's giant molecular cloud about 1,500 light-years away, but are dominated by the characteristic blue color of interstellar dust reflecting light from hot young stars.

In a new release on October 02, 2023 - James Webb Telescope Unveils Stunning Images of Orion Nebula's Red Fingers. Full article here
Tumblr media
Dive into the depths of space with us as we uncover the mesmerizing secrets of the Orion Nebula. The new James Webb Space Telescope has gifted us an awe-inspiring glimpse of the cosmos, and it's nothing short of breathtaking!
📸 Behold the Image: "The 'Fingers' of the Orion Nebula"
These striking 'fingers,' captured in a short-wavelength mosaic behind the Trapezium Cluster and the visible Orion Nebula, are racing away from a celestial explosion that occurred half a millennium to a millennium ago. They appear radiant in red due to their composition of shocked molecular hydrogen, and the green tips are a result of ionized iron.
Join us on this cosmic journey and learn about the forces that shape our universe. See the universe through the lens of the James Webb Space Telescope and let your imagination take flight.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captures stunning images of the Orion Nebula
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured stunning images of the Orion Nebula, one of the brightest nebulae in the sky. The images reveal new details about the nebula's structure and composition, including previously unseen clouds of gas and dust.
The Orion Nebula is a star-forming region located about 1,350 light-years from Earth. It is one of the most popular targets for amateur astronomers, as it is visible to the naked eye on a clear night.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful telescope ever built, and it is able to see objects in the infrared spectrum that are invisible to other telescopes. The infrared images of the Orion Nebula reveal new details about the nebula's structure and composition, including previously unseen clouds of gas and dust.
The images also show the nebula's "Pillars of Creation," which are towering columns of gas and dust where stars are forming. The Pillars of Creation are one of the most iconic images in astronomy, and the James Webb Space Telescope's images are the most detailed ever taken.
The James Webb Space Telescope's images of the Orion Nebula are a testament to the power of the telescope and its potential to revolutionize our understanding of the universe.

More grey skies with rain and snow equals more opportunity to re-visit old astro-data. In this case, M 42 | Great Orion Nebula & NGC 1977 | Running Man Nebula, captured 4-Dec-21. I've learned some new processing steps and have new software tools at hand, as well. This version of the Orion Nebula explodes with the red of excited hydrogen molecules. The use of a special nebula "booster" filter -- and much processing -- helps bring out the details. For those that might ask, I added no color to the image. In fact, I reduced the saturation so that it looked less like the evidence of a crime scene! (No aliens were harmed in the production of this image!) The Orion Nebula. Certainly the darling of amateur astrophotographers, but, isn’t it beautiful? The Orion Nebula is the brightest nebula in the sky. It is readily visible via binoculars in the constellation of Orion. On a galactic scale it is close-by at 1,500 light years. However keep this distance in perspective: a radio message to the moon takes about 1-2 seconds. To the nearby planets: several minutes. To the Orion Nebula a message takes about 1,500 years. I photographed the Orion Nebula from my balcony in Strasbourg France on a rare clear night in December 2022. #orionnebula #m42 #messier42 #messierobjects #astrophotography #astrophotographiefrance #blurxterminator #noisexterminator (at Strasbourg, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmhIBBUs4bo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Orion Nebula is about 3 million years and roughly 1344 light years away. When dinosaurs roamed the Earth 65 million years ago, this nebula wasn’t even the sky! The Orion Nebula & Running Man | M42 & sh2-279 - Providence, RI . Taking old data and reprocessing it with newer techniques to bring out more detail and clarity is a very satisfying (and potentially frustrating) experience. This is data that I took that I was not able to combine with other data without a lot of weird artifacts. This led me to just processing it and leaving it be. Going back, I was able to keep the core muted more while brining out more dust and color. All processing here was done with Photoshop, using DeepSkyStacker to stack the data. . First imagecis starless, next with stars and lastly an inverted image. .
