I dwelt a lot on guilt over Lent. Things present, things long past. I know with these bad feelings the guilty actions won’t be repeated, and that the guilt is proof that I care. If I can feel quilty I can’t be as bad a person as the feeling insists. I can learn, grow, change my ways.
Harder to shift is shame. That I will be found out for the abomination that I am and feel this way forever. Ah me, I am human. I have secrets.
Despite this holy season, it still took my heathen heart by surprise when it accepted Jesus as my Savior in a dream. The guilt was resolved. My self image expanded to include being a person who could do a thing like that.
I don’t know what to do with this event. Dream symbolism or divine moment? Am I finally taking the plunge into true heresy? I guess not since I have not prayed to him... but I could and would that be so bad?
I struggle a lot with the idea of being saved... but I could fervently worship a being of compassionate love, who sees our flawed yet perfect humanity and loves us, who forgives us... I don’t want to believe in original sin, but I suppose I do. I know we all have a mean, selfish streak which mustn’t be allowed to develop. My actions can have awful consequences for others, that is sin. I reject the idea that my body or sexuality are sinful, unless used to abuse others.
I balk at being forgiven by Jesus or God if I just repent and have faith, that it washes away the past (how many pedophiles are in prison with an “Only God can judge me” tattoo?). But I’m not an abuser, just an ordinary person who is sometimes selfish and negligent...
I can forgive myself after all, and I believe Christ dwells in the heart not the heavens...

Journal #8
After watching Kubrick’s 1962 version of Lolita and now watching Lyne’s (1997) version, this one made me more uncomfortable and almost made me consider not finishing the movie. Lyne’s (1997) “Lolita” was more explicit, raunchy, and disturbing, because of the nudity of a 12-year-old child and the sex scenes that would happen between Dolores and Quilty. While looking at the promotional images for Lolita and knowing how the actress who played Lolita was only 15 posing with a man 30 years her age I would assume that they are trying to portray a romantic relationship between an adult and a child. The images of just Dolores are risque as she exposes her legs and wears red lipstick, they are trying to describe the Lolita, the promiscuous little girl. The 1997 Lolita was a remake of Kubrick and pushed more explicit scenes in the movie to relate more to the book. It seemed like the 1997 remake was trying to challenge the original. Leitch stated how “Since most remakes attempt to supersede their originals for all but a marginal audience watching them for their historical value, remakes typically threaten the economic viability of their original”. Leitch describes how remakes try to make “new versions of old movies” even though it's telling the same story but with more explicit scenes relating to Lolita. In the lecture, the teacher stated how “the idea it's giving something Kubrick couldn’t give you” and that is the reason for an explicit remake. The remake gave me more reactions because of the explicitly but I still felt the same way about the story. In response to the discussion questions, the male gaze is present in both films by how the men in the film talk about Lolita and her looks and how she's so young making her more appealing to them. The main difference between the two is how Quilty developed his fetishization and the more explicit scenes in the 1997 version. The Lolita role and depiction in both films still portrayed the young girls as more advanced and “in control” but still a child. After watching both films I still cannot get over the fact that there are movies explicitly made about a grown man involved with a young child.

Brendan’s Step by step
The step by step is also {here}, make sure you join the Buffy forums fan section {here}.
Firstly, I would like to talk about my style and why I much prefer the Tumblr style. The reasons I prefer doing Tumblr graphics, it's because, in my opinion, there are easy and truly minimalistic, you don't need to worry about the DPI, and the professionalism of working big making the imagery really beneficial towards the scale. I would add also that Tumblr is truly simple in some way a collage style. If you notice about the art around Tumblr it's one focal point blended with unique textures making it stand out and original. You can also notice there are different kind of styles around Tumblr which includes picspams, gifs, editorials and collages. So basically look at Tumblr truly help oneself because you can find amazing inspirations inspiring your creativity and make your idea go forward. This is where I write the first step.
Inspirations.
Finding inspiration really helps me a lot truly rewarding, and yes sometimes I do try and put down my jealousy and self-esteem down because I learned that art is not about competition it's about getting inspired. Studies one art truly helps you grow because it expands your idea, even more, making that idea and to transform it to your own originality is really fun to do. Let's talk about my first journey on how I created this piece. {here}
When I look for inspiration I look for scale, type, colour, compositions of imagery and the style. I had no clue on what I was doing, what size it should be, should this piece be alone but, then I found these three inspirations that helped me on what scale I should execute my graphics on. {here}, {here} and {here}.*sources are linked to the artist who created those graphics*
If you can see I got inspired by the scale so I saved the imagery to find out what size and it's (500px x 300px) a simple banner size, so this is when I decided to do a set (more than one) because I also just love the narration on the imagery bounce so well together it tells the story much better IMO. And also that 3rd inspiration this is when I knew which colouring I wanted to achieve.
The Idea.
My idea came from this challenge that I hosted (20th-anniversary challenge) and I notice that it came really deserted, but I finished all my memes, but I hadn't had the chance to create something based on season 6 which it is my favourite season of Buffy, so it's a meme I did it to myself. "Favourite season!". I wanted to capture a dark theme within the horror style like a pop art collage. So I wanted to capture the beginning of season 6 so now it's time to get the screencaps and stock imagery by taking on the inspiration. I wanted to capture Buffy alone because of her feeling within her depression, for example, she dug herself from her grave so I wanted to capture that she has entered hell, and I wanted to capture a stock image that represents that descriptive metaphor of hell maybe walking in a forest? alone? within that red colouring which I got inspired by the graphics that I got inspired by. So now for.
Step One.
Tumblr media
Step one is starting up your canvas. (File >> New >> Default Photoshop size >> Width "500 Pixels" Height "300 Pixels")
Now, I need to look for some stock image to contracts well within my theme and style. You can find some amazing stock through google images, Flickr, Tumblr, etc and a favourite of mine {here}. Getting the stock is so much easier if you have an idea what you are looking for, when I search for stock I look for "Composition, Unique perspective and pattern". I found this stock which connects to my dark theme amazingly.
Tumblr media
Now click on the move tool {
Tumblr media
}  and drag it on to your original canvas.
Tumblr media
The image is placed as my background but, it doesn't fit the whole canvas so I experimented the scale of the image to try and fit my desire compositions. By simply pressing (CTRL T).
Tumblr media
Click on one of the four main corners. Make sure you (HOLD) down the (SHIFT) key on your keyboard when reducing the size so it won't lose that quilty outstretched in some ways. I love this because it holds the images together when reducing and expanding.
Tumblr media
Just moving the image around then I found this to be perfect for my idea.
Step Two. Now I need to get some screencaps from "Bargaining" because I thought her outfit was just right to capture my feel and atmosphere within my graphics. We all know that the Buffy screencaps are just down in quality so I got the images from this wonderful site, IMO the best screencaps to capture season 6 the negative about this site is that it doesn't have all the episode which is truly a shame. {here}.
Tumblr media
I love this image because it already showcases a hellish feel but, I wanted to capture my own feelings towards Buffy emotions. Also, I love how Buffy is dressed within this episode you can feel she is lost.
Now using the (Pen Tool:
Tumblr media
) I worked on the original image I would place the finale outcome onto my original canvas when I'm done because I need to select Buffy out of the background.
I Zoomed into the image now I will show you my progress on the Pen tool. By pressing down the (SPACEBAR) you can move the image around.
Tumblr media
When using the pen tool it's a must that you don't keep clicking your mouse on each step of the shape you are trying to cut out. For example, you need to widen your pen tool make little steps for example.
Tumblr media
Step one you click on the mouse to start your anchor point, then step two click to follow the shape of the outline of the object but, remember to take (steps) then hold that click so you can be able to curve and move the trail to follow the shape. Then step three you simply hold down (ALT) on the keyboard to move the anchor to continue the outline. Then just repeat until it's all done.
Tumblr media
And when you are finished you simply LEFT click on your mouse then make the selection. A zebra pattern outline is selected around the object. Then just simply press (CTRL J) on your keyboard it selects out your image onto a new layer.
Tumblr media
Now it's time to drag it over to the original canvas.
Step Three.
Tumblr media
You can see that the image didn't fit on to my scale (500px x 300px) so I (CTRL T) So I scaled it down to my prefered execution. Remember HOLD DOWN THE (SHIFT KEY) so it doesn't lose that quietly so it sticks. I wanted the image to come across that she is walking through the stock image like a manipulation. So I place the Buffy cut out at the bottom middle where the trees have an opening.
Tumblr media
I centred the Buffy image by holding the CTRL key to click on that Buffy layer then click the background layer.
Tumblr media
Then to the top menu and click this symbol. (
Tumblr media
)
Tumblr media
I took a look back at my progress to see if the composition fits my idea. It turned out to be fantastic that's the kind of thing I wanted something horrific because I felt that Buffy just wanders off in her own world within season 6, trying to find herself. It's time for the colouring because I find the Buffy image really dark. And I wanted to capture that colouring which I got inspired by.
Step Four. Now it's time for the colouring I will show you how I did it.
Tumblr media
You see that little symbol at the bottom there are options to focus on your colour. I selected out the prefered options that I find useful to experiment with the colour.
Tumblr media
First, the background was a bit light for my liking so I wanted to focus on that layer by separating the Buffy image layer by simply pressing (CTRL + ALT + G) on the background image. It clips on to the layer. When I use the "Brightness and contrast" I just experimented by going slow on each option just basically just experiment, but remember to try not to go OTT just simply experiment both options. I got the colouring I wanted now you notice that Buffy is dark so its time to use the same method.
Tumblr media
By using the same method and experiment with the tool like selective colour, brightness and contrast and by clipping masking on the layer. I'm nearly done with this. I always wanted to showcase simplistic a collage style I hope I'm capturing my narration. Now using a gradient map because I want a strong colour of the background. Remember I was keeping with the idea of that inspiration.
Tumblr media
I normally experiment with the blending modes for example "Lighten, Multiply and Soft Light" but, for some reason on normal mode made sense on my composition. And I clipped the gradient map on the background by (CTRL + ALT + G)
Now I think I'm done now it's the effects. (CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + E) To merge all the layers into one by keeping the originals intact.
Tumblr media
The effects that I normally use are (grain, shapen edges, unsharpen mask), but for this, I use my newfound effect by going (FILTER + NOISE + REDUCE NOISE). I wanted this piece to have a smoke feel, a clean vibe.
Tumblr media
Remember I just experimented because it comes down to personal feel. But, my only tip would say try not go OTT on the effects.
Tumblr media
When I'm finished I always place the opacity down just to make sure it doesn't come across to strong within the effects, by placing the opacity down a little and now it does feel natural. Done!
Tumblr media
End of (Part 1),
Finale piece. {here}
This is my first time that I ever did this so I hope it truly makes sense.

For the first project, I will be expanding on skills that I learned through the Architecture Summer Research Internship (summer 2019). When I look at the original images I was given, I see entrances, exits, lack of access, moving on, and abandonment. As the type of person who never likes to stay in one place for very long, the original images inspired me to work with the idea of ephemeral existences and the temporality of space. I have always seen my body as my first home and my clothes as my most primal protective shelter. Using digital negatives and cyanotype fabric, I will be constructing a simple wrap skirt made with images of various takes on entrances and exits.
Tasks for today (2/10)
-Create daily schedule for the project
-Determine exactly how many images I can fit on the skirt. The cyanotype fabric is 8.5x11 and I need at least 1/4 of an inch seam to sew the cyanotypes together. This means that my digital negatives cannot be larger than 8.25x10.75.
-Reach out to Kirin or Quilty Pleasures to set a time for them to look over my plans before I begin sewing.
-Print digital negatives of original images and run tests to determine how long to expose the cyanotype fabric.

Well that was my week.
Now let's see who made this week's feature
Tumblr media
As usual, several quilt projects caught my eye.
First up is Jocelyn @ Canadian Needle Nana, who recycled a shirt for making a quilt! Isn’t it pretty? In my opinion the shirt fabric lends the perfect texture to the sashings that frame those lovely flowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is Deana @ Daughters of Dorinda who shared an adorable truck quilt top she’s making for her grandson. She hasn’t finished anything lately so this is a big win for her! Let’s leave an encouraging comment on her blog for a quick finish to this cute quilt.
Tumblr media
Finally, I’d like to feature Gail @ Quilting Gail again this week, this time for these way too cute zippered bags that she made for some little girls. Look closely—that fabric was colored by the little girls themselves! Isn’t that special?
Tumblr media
Congratulations ladies! Here's an I Was Featured badge for your blogs or to simply print out and wear with pride! Thank you for supporting my blog!

Practice Led Discovery
I wish to establish a visual link in the images I create between the past and present representations of masculinity, as represented by the 2 sources I have chosen to work with. I will explore this through the simple Photoshop technique of layering. Beginning with the family photo album image, which I will re-photograph and edit to enhance it definition and quality, I will present each work as a series of 9 images which will gradually gradate, each frame revealing more of the contemporary Quilty painting chosen to accompany the original photo. The two images will merge into each other until the final frame is almost the opposite of the first. However, the image from the past will remain visible, reinforcing the relationship between past and present, echoes from the past as a ghostly presence, continuing to resonate in the present.
 Reflection
To further reinforce the link between the 2 images, I have created a colour tonal matching to help create a visual unity.  This image represents the mid-way point in the transition from old to new, then to now.

Wednesday Wait Loss 5
Wednesday Wait Loss 5
Welcome back to Wednesday Wait Loss! This week I struggled to get something done to show. My daughter is home this week for Spring Break, so frankly I’ve spent most of my time with her. My husband is still trying to get over the flu so I’ve been picking up the slack and making all the dinners and lunches and doing the laundry and so on (normally we share those duties which is awesome!) At the same time, I think I’ve finally caught his flu and so my energy level is way down.
As you can see, I have finished the quilting on Besties! Whoop, whoop! Of course, now I've got to trim, add a hanger, and apply the binding, but hey--I made some real progress!
Please keep all the encouraging comments coming. They really help. As a goal, I want to finish Besties this week and quilt my quilt for Kate. Whatever happens though, I promise I'll show something new next week and not just the same old, same old.
This week I want to feature my beemate Mary. Mary is a prolific finisher, and so she always has tons of WIPs and tons of finishes. She is also extremely generous, making tons of charity quilts every year.  Last week, Mary shared two charity quilts she’s working on.
Mary is also extremely artistic and I’m sure she’ll be sharing one of her art pieces here soon. Thanks Mary for linking up!
Last week I mentioned the Berry Cross QAL Show it Off Party, and encouraged you all to look at the finished Berry Cross quilts and to vote for your favorites. If you didn’t see the results, click here.
I thought we could try voting during Wednesday Wait Loss, just for fun. The linky will be open until Friday at midnight EST. After the linky closes, you can return here to vote. I’ll keep the voting open until Tuesday at midnight EST. To vote, you click on the heart that appears in the upper left corner of an image. Let's all use the voting to send hearts of encouragement! Maybe you want to give a heart to someone whose work you love and really want to see finished. Maybe you want to give a heart to someone who can really use a hug because they haven’t been making any progress. Whatever the reason, you’ve got six votes (six hearts) to give.
Make sure though, that you also visit the links in the linky and leave a comment on at least a few. And please comment here too--remember that some of our participants don't have a blog to link to, so leaving a comment here for them will be your only want to applaud their progress. Although the little hearts might be nice to get, it’s really your thoughts and words of encouragement that mean so much.
I’m really happy to see all those WIPs and finishes! Let’s make Wednesday Wait Loss our mid-week habit. To encourage you, I’m having a giveaway—a beautiful Lilla charm pack from Windham Fabrics.
To enter for a chance to win Lilla, simply link up! I’ll announce the winner on March 15th. You can link up more than one project if you want, up to three chances a week for a total of nine chances! If you link up multiple times though, please be kind and increase the number of people you visit and comment on so we can spread our love and encouragement around.
Time to link up! If you need help, click here for detailed steps. If you run into problems linking up, just email me your photo and a link to your blog/Instagram and I’ll enter the link manually. Here are the rules for the linky:
Link up a photo of a quilty WIP (work in progress). If you’ve made progress or have finished a project you’ve linked up previously, feel free to link that up as well.
You can link up a photo from a blog post, Instagram, Flickr, or upload one directly from your computer if you don’t happen to be a blogger or Instagram/Flickr user.
If you upload a photo, please explain your project by leaving a comment.
After linking up, encourage the other participants by visiting a few of the linkable photos and also by commenting on a few of the comments below from people who upload directly from their computers (You can identify the non-bloggers easily because their photos won’t be linkable, or will link right back here to this page.)
Please link back to my post somewhere in your blog post or use @inquiringquilter to tag me in your Instagram/Flickr post.
By linking up, you are giving me permission to grab a photo from your post and to feature you next week. Featured photos are linked to your original post.
The linky will be open until Friday, March 10th at midnight EST. On Saturday, the voting will open and will remain open until midnight EST on Tuesday, March 14th. Please join us and let’s finish those WIPs!

Wednesday Wait Loss 3
Well, it’s Week 3 of my Wednesday Wait Loss linky party and I wish I had better news to report on my end. No progress on my two projects from last week. There’s a reason I was distracted and unfocused, and I’ll be posting about that soon.
Today though I want to focus on those pesky WIPs. Why is it that we put them off? I certainly have a lot of sewing to do, and even with last week’s chaos I got two new mini quilts done for Island Batiks, and made some progress on pattern writing. I think for me it's having some sort of deadline that helps me get things done. For my longstanding WIPs, it's not only the lack of a deadline but also a little bit of out of sight, out of mind. So it’s my hope that Wednesday Wait Loss will help. For me, it's keeping me accountable for finishing (or at least making some progress on) the WIPs I report here. I hope it can work in that way for you as well.
So this week I need your help to push through and get these two quilts done! I've got a lot of work related deadlines I must finish but I don't want to not make progress on these. Help me get over this wait!
Time for this week’s feature. Anja from Anja Quilts linked up the most beautiful paper pieced blocks, created by a friend of hers—Andrea @ 3rd Story Workshop.
So beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing them Anja. Grab your I was Featured button for you blog.
Sadly, we only had two people link up last week. Surely you all have WIPs? If not, share your finishes! We’d love to see. To encourage everyone to get into the Wednesday Wait Loss habit, I’m having a giveaway!
As you know, I design and test patterns for Windham Fabrics, and they asked me to spread the word about their wonderful collections. Today I’m featuring Lilla. Click on the image if you'd like to see the whole Lilla collection!
Lilla is fresh and modern, with a muted color palette that’s sure to find a home in any quilter’s stash. To enter for a chance to win this Lilla charm pack, just link up! I'm keeping the contest open for three weeks, so you'll have plenty of chances to enter. I’ll announce the winner the fourth week, March 15th. You can link up more than once if you want, up to three chances (three links) a week for a total of nine chances! Also, if you link up this week, March 1st and March 8th, you'll earn another five extra chances to win!
If you link up multiple times though, please be kind and increase the number of people you visit and comment on so we can spread our love and encouragement around.
