On one hand, I really appreciate that Atlus is bringing back older titles or even reviving their IPs, as is the case with the Etrian Odyssey HD trilogy. In fact if it weren’t for SMT Nocturne HD, I wouldn’t have gotten into Megaten.

But I can’t help but also be critical of how Atlus (and Sega too by extension) has been approaching their re-releases and remasters as of late. I didn’t actually mind Nocturne HD’s lack of polish and P3P’s, even though yes it is egregious, AI upscaling isn’t enough for me to turn it down completely.

But what I do find really off-putting is pricing and especially for Atlus to price the complete Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection, a digital-only release, at $80 USD.

Actually it’s even worse for me, as a Canadian. It costs $106 CAD.

Even just buying them separately is ludicrous. One EO HD title is priced at $52.99 CAD. That is almost the same price for the Persona 3 Portable + Persona 4 Golden bundle on Switch ($53.99 CAD). So for the price of one EO HD, I could buy two Persona games with that same money.

As it stands, that plain isn’t good lmao and I cannot see myself buying even just one EO game at that price unless there is a big discount. It is certainly not going to draw in potential new fans and just comes off as exploiting veteran fans. And it makes me really concerned, pricing and poor remaster efforts with previous releases combined, if this is going to set a new precedent going forward.

As of writing in 2022, the price of any of the four Archives have at least doubled and you'd be lucky to find any archive still sealed for less than £100. Add to this that these books are no longer sold by Dark Horse or Amazon and despite public demand for the 25th anniversary (due to high prices), there are no plans for a re-release. However for those lucky enough to have one of these, this also means that these books hold their value. And if you do end up paying a lot for one, these books will hold that value.

The Kantai Collection Nendoroids proved that even if a Nendoroid has complicated (and thus expensive) parts, if it sells well, then Good Smile will lower the price. In other words, if a character is popular enough to make many individual unit sales, then Good Smile will lower the price. KanColle should be at least $60 with all their details, but I've paid less than $50 for several of my KanColle Nendo preorders from GSC. Even if a figure is individually expensive to make, if they can make up for a low individual unit price, through a high _number_ of unit sales, Good Smile will do it.

So, taking into consideration that low price may indicate a popular character...

Futaba was so popular because of her character design that there were already several static scale figures of her non-Phantom Thief form soon after P5 originally released. And GSC made her Nendo a non-Phantom Thief version without ever announcing future plans for a Phantom Thief Nendo Futaba, even to this day. Because they were so confident in the popularity of Futaba in her "regular clothes" outfit.

Ann, Yusuke, Ryuji, and Haru were part of the in-audience voting at Good Smile Company's panel during Anime Expo 2018 (https://youtu.be/sFNp33t8CpU). So it's pretty clear that Good Smile was so uncertain if Ann, Yusuke, Ryuji, and Haru were even popular enough to make profitable Nendos of, that they wanted confirmation directly from their figure collectors, and additionally, wanted to narrow it down to making a Nendo of just one of them, if they could. That makes sense. But Haru being dead last does not make sense! She's popular! She has to be! She's a good floof! ;o;! Then I remembered that she comes with an extra set of legs for sitting, AND a chair, AND a separate, big hat. Oops ^.^; lol But it still makes sense that Ann and Yusuke would be cheaper and that Good Smile Company would think they were more popular than Ryuji and Haru. Because at their Anime Expo 2018 panel, Yusuke and Ann did win the in-audience votes. Yusuke just barely won over Ryuji, so it makes sense that Ryuji isn't too much more expensive.

But yeah. Good Smile seems to lower their prices for popular characters.
