If you’ve ever gone to a Mountain Goats show and waited in line outside for hours or gotten chummy with folks in the crowd, you know how deep the lore runs. It can make you feel small in the blink of an eye. Your undying love for “Cubs In Five” becomes instantly overshadowed by the guy with a tape recorder in his pocket who can recite setlists from 2004 gigs in states the Mountain Goats rarely make it out to anymore. But what’s beautiful about that scariness—even if you feel like your fandom is not enough—is that...there is such an undercurrent of love, affection and hope at every turn. At some point over the last 30 years, these people found Darnielle’s writing—be it via his boombox recordings or via the label-backed, concept-album concertos—and elected to devote a piece of themselves to loving these songs so much that, no matter what mix-and-matched setlist is thrown at them, they are ready to sing along with every note.
hey guys this tMG article is really fucking good and I think everyone should go read it

hi everyone! @fluffy-papaya and i are still hard at work on the next few BSCH chapters, but we didn't wanna leave y'all completely in the lurch with no new content, soooooooooo.... it's as good a time as any to share The Playlist, i think! (insert obligatory "there's cursing in some of these songs btw" disclaimer here.)
and just so you know -- there is a lot of foreshadowing in this thing. like, just a metric ton of Chekhov's Guns and the like. good luck finding them and have fun theorizing! we'll see you all when the next arc's done! :]

(and a bonus if you wanna: does it inspire any particular blorbo / fic thoughts?)
hi hi ner!! thanks for sending in an ask 💕💕(NOOOO NOOOO!!!! DON'T ENABLE ME LIKE THIS THE SONG I GOT WAS SADDD NOOOO!!!! /j)
I promise you I'll answer your plea I swear it's true Just trust in me -Iris from Professor Layton (fanlyrics by Adriana Figueroa)
sorry idk anyth about professor layton but AUGH i love lizz's covers...i love the soprano tenderness in that verse, its high but gentle and so hard to emulate but she does it so effortlessly
youtube
(send me ∞ and i'll give you my fave lyric from what shows on shuffle)
++(Also... fic/blorbo thoughts u said? oki so imma talk a lil bit about wcidfy under the cut, open at ur own risk)
from my initial read of his character, there's this feeling of distance woven into jamil. like in his dreams of traveling the world, the gap in hierarchy between him and kalim, the way he tries to distinguish himself post-OB from being "normal and mediocre," and even in how he embodies the scarabia dorm's value of mindfulness (which is being detached enough to plan for most if not all plausible outcomes)
like, i cant help but think of how that sense of uncrossable distance (?) persists in almost every part of him and how it will spill into his relationships, if that makes sense?
add to that the fact that wcidfy-reader/yuu has to eventually return home to their original world and well, that sounds like a car crash about to happen (i think it also has to do with how music box instrus are just good at evoking love and goodbyes but AGH!)

Love to discover that a band that everyone talks about the whole time and is wildly influential is really good. Like coming out of Plato's Cave to listen to music

Yeah, I super agree, tbh I prefer demo version 3 and like idk why but, most demos are better than the original.... Well some but still, why the demos have to so fuckin superior boppers than the originals but tbh I still love them but mygod Time machine whyyy more autotune, I love you but like it's so bad 😞😔😭
With every earlier version of Time Machine I find, I get angrier & angrier that the final version is what we ended up with.
Demo 1 is full of charm,
Demo 2 is haunting with fascinating lyrics (& the superior "now I know ever waits for me..." rather than "you can make ever wait for you..")
Demo 3 is incredibly catchy,
& Live @ The Blind Pig has arguably the best arrangement/instrumentation of all the versions, material/inspiration from all the different versions (including the final), a better lead up to the chorus when compared to the final, & phenomenal vocals & harmonies.
& with all these incredible early versions, we really ended up with THAT on the album???
I genuinely can't even beGIN to understand & comprehend how ANYBODY involved in Miracle Musical was ok with completely BUTCHERING Time Machine. I just to be mildly irritated by the final version but hearing the brilliant L@BP performance genuinely kinda upsets me-
The final version has no charm like Demo 1, none of the gospel-like/ominous/haunting energy of Demo 2, none of Demo 3's instrumentation or unfiltered vocals, & none of L@BP's sheer awesomeness.
I'll never ever ever understand how or why some of the songs in HPII were butchered the way they were. Murders is nowhere near as haunting, Stranded Lullaby has a superior instrumental than Our Lullaby/Demo 1, but none of the emotional resonance, and the finalized version of Time Machine is just flat out bad.

Okay, at some point my baseline for metal music became “whatever that one subgenre is where it sounds like the whole band is being kicked down a flight of stairs”
so I was like “oh no I don’t like metal”
But I actually looked closer at bands I was calling, idk, hard rock, and turns out I like a fair bit of metal
Your girl reverse “fake metal fan”d zirself
