Plant of the Day
Wednesday 5 June 2024
Visiting a local farm I saw this wonderful double flowered form of Papaver orientale (oriental poppy, eastern poppy) in the front garden. This perennial poppy is covered with beautiful silvery hairs and will become naturalised in grassy embankments.

🔅🌑 𝔏𝔢𝔬 𝔑𝔢𝔴 𝔐𝔬𝔬𝔫 🌑🔅
Beloved Luna now begins a new lunar cycle with a new moon in Leo at 12° which falls in it’s second decan ruled by Jupiter ✨ ♃ ✨ (chaldean) ~ A Crown of Laurels~ and is also in Saturn’s bound 💫 The Omega symbol for this degree is “Hidden passages in a house. Over time, their secret has been forgotten.”

This lunation embodies a powerful dance of purification, transformation, and growth, guiding us to unleash our fullest potential and radiant vitality.
Lately I’ve been feeling like a photograph marred by flames leaving the memories encapsulated in it lost to the world, similar to this degree symbology. Maybe a little dramatic, it is Leo season after all, but it had me reflect on the healing that comes from being burned.
Cool burnings, a deeply spiritual practice of Indigenous Australians, involve gently setting low-intensity fires that cleanse the land, encouraging new life and restoring ecological balance. This ancient ritual reflects the Aboriginal people's sacred bond with the earth and their role as its traditional custodians. Just as these nurturing fires spark the land's renewal, the new moon in Leo inspires us to release past burdens and boldly embrace new beginnings with fiery passion and creativity.

While making my collage I also felt a deep connection to the symbolism of the Chinese guardian lions or foo dogs. These sacred creatures are revered as powerful protectors and symbols of strength. Traditionally placed at the entrances of temples and homes to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune, foo dogs are depicted with fierce expressions and commanding wings. The male lion often holds a ball under his paw, symbolizing the world or power, while the female usually holds a cub, representing nurturing and the cycle of life. Symbolically they connect to the aspects of this new moon that encourage personal power, courage and protection. They help to inspire a bold determination to embrace new beginnings and lead with passion and confidence.

I chose to highlight oriental poppies for this lunation as their vivid and striking blooms reminded me of Leo’s magnetic nature. Linked to Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, poppies symbolize fertility and life, reflecting Leo's connection to creation. In ancient Greek rituals, poppies were offered to Demeter to celebrate nature's abundance, further mirroring Leo’s association with the sun and its life-giving vitality.

Plant bee-friendly flowers.
Tumblr media
“Bee engaged with Youth”. World Bee Day 2024.
Bees help your garden thrive, so treat them well by growing some or all of these bee-friendly plants. Which came first, the bee or the bee balm? While the question may be interesting to contemplate, it illustrates the vital partnership between plant and pollinator, and how one needs the other in order to survive.
Bee populations are declining rapidly in many regions of the country, with habitat loss being a primary cause. As gardeners, we can do our part to help keep these important pollinators well fed. Growing a diverse variety of flowering plants can satisfy the appetites of various bee species. Along with planting lots of flowers that attract bees, we can also improve the environment for bees by creating a safe haven in our gardens that they can call home.

Plant of the Day
Friday 21 June 2024
The old and spectacular Papaver orientale 'Princess Victoria Louise' (poppy, oriental poppy) has large, blooms with crêpe paper petals and are the perfect addition to a cottage-style border. The flowers are short-lived but if dead-headed they may flower again in the autumn.
