PAMALAKAYA on Facebook:
ALERT!
Denounce the series of harassment against elderly fisherfolk leader Ka Romy Antazo.
Antazo, 80 years old, is former Secretary General of PAMALAKAYA and now a retired fisherman in Laguna de Bay.
During his active years in PAMALAKAYA, he was at the forefront of the fisherfolk’s campaign for the conservation of Laguna de Bay against profit-driven and destructive projects, including coastal conversion, reclamation, and proliferation of corporate-owned fish pens.
The veteran fisherfolk leader has been repeatedly approached by state agents and offered him livelihood support and assistance in exchange for his “cooperation”.
It has been presumed that the said “cooperation” equates that Antazo will be presented by the authorities as a “rebel returnee” to turn against and establish the red-tagging of progressive and mass-based organizations.
[...]
We are extremely alarmed over these incidents, as these could subject Antazo to further and worse kinds of attacks because of his firm stand against the authorities’ demands.
Moreover, the consistent effort to coerce Antazo to cooperate with the authorities is part of the Marcos Jr. administration’s tactics in counterinsurgency campaign, which blatantly violates the rights of civilians to freedom of expression and association.
We call on the human rights and environmental defenders, fisherfolk advocates, and champions of democracy, to denounce the government’s anti-democratic schemes that put our leaders and members at risk of exploitation and injustice.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Well, I am poor.
I only got to LaSalle because I got scholarship. I am also not too smart, kyeme lang, bumagsak nga ako sa UPCAT eh.
Immersion to have idea about poverty? Bitch I don't need it, I grew up in poverty.
But having the opportunity to think na I can compete together with these rich kids despite being dirt poor, despite coming to class with maputik na shoes (no joke, like literally), makes me think that I can take on society no matter what, that I can be respected if I just work a little bit harder.
So you're telling me??? Na despite all the efforts of the scholars out there??? To rise up from poverty?? To get the respect they deserve?? (This is without the context na magiging mapagmataas sila ha, opinion nyo na yun if they're gonna be like that) hindi parin nila deserve yun??? Kase ano? Mahirap parin ang Pilipinas? Sinong may kasalanan? Ang instructors n'yo?
Parang instead of helping your "mamamayang pilipino" to get attracted to education, you're telling them na institutions are only for the privileged. THESE COMPLAINTS ARE ROOTED FROM EFFORT, NOT PRIVILEDGE. I'm not even nagrereklamo about OP wanting to be called Doctor, sometimes it is unnecessary—sa academic conventions lang naman talaga nagtatawagan ng Doctor or Professor or Engineer.
I'm talking about how you guys are over-reacting and saying na we shouldn't respect OPs wishes.
Like, why?
Bakit naging matter of privilege ito?
Yeah, private academe system is shit. Minsan naiinis ako kapag nagtataguan ng science journals ang mga uni, which is dapat public priviledge ang science, but is bitterness the way to solve it?
There was this one jeepney driver na minsan kong nasasakay when I come home from school. Yung anak nya nag-aaral ng masteral sa UP noon. He's very kind, gentle, and respectful, and would take pride sa kanyang anak na malapit na magdoctorate. I feel happy whenever he brags about his daughter kase nakaya nya, as a jeepney driver, na mapagtapos ang mga anak nya. I'll see to it na when we meet again, I will say, "Oh Kamusta na po si Doctor, manong nesty?"
Or maybe hindi dapat.
"Ayokong tawaging Doctor ang anak mo, Manong. Ang kapal naman ng mukha n'ya. Wala kaseng Phd ang kapitbahay ko, eh."
(at since gusto ko gumaan ang pakirandam mo, bigyan mo ako ng pera para maengganyo ako kumuha ng Phd.)

Katribu Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas, alongside other Indigenous Peoples’ rights organizations, strongly condemns the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the Philippines for his meeting with [president] Marcos Jr.
This meeting is viewed by Indigenous Peoples (IP) of the country as a continuation of exploitation and encroachment on their rights and lands, particularly alarming given Marcos Jr.'s advocacy for economic reforms that would allow 100% foreign ownership of Indigenous lands.
The historical pattern of US intervention in Philippine affairs, often resulting in policies and legislation that facilitate the plunder of Philippine land resources and human rights violations against its Indigenous stewards, is deeply concerning.
The meeting between "Bloody Blinken" and Marcos Jr. is feared to set a dangerous precedent, potentially escalating political vilification, militarization, bombings, and killings of IP.

SIRENA: K-6 Students Perform at UPIS Variety Show 2024
UP Integrated School (UPIS) K-2 and 3-6 students exhibited their talents at the Variety Show last May 22 at the UPIS 7-12 Gymnasium.
Tumblr media
A total of eight performers from Grades 3-6 performed in the event. Each one was given three to five minutes to show their talents to the audience. The performances were evaluated by the judges Mr. Joseph Tablizo from the Social Studies Department, Ms. Alexia Metrio from the Practical Arts Department, and Asst. Prof. Diana Caluag, our Assistant Principal for Academic Programs.
The competitors from Grades 3-6 showed a variety of song and dance numbers. Anica Gail Lopez from 4-Labanos dedicated her performance to God and sang the Christian worship song "Wala Kang Katulad''; Marco Bonganay from 4-Patani sang "My Favorite Girl" by Justin Bieber; and the Whitebored Band, consisting of Ulan Rico on drums, Lucas Dionisio on piano and vocals, and Caleb Kwe on guitar and vocals, performed "Raining in Manila" by Lola Amour and "Believer" by Imagine Dragons. Meanwhile, a student from 5-Arayat, Jared Alexander Lagrimas sang “Miss Miss” by Rob Deniel.
Lastly, Mikkel Caia Odulio from 6-Amethyst sang "Yellow" by Coldplay; The Shooting Stars duo, consisting of Vivienne Madamba and Sue Anne Giannan from 6-Amethyst, sang the English version of the Japanese song "Goodbye Sengen" by Wonderlands x Showtime (originally by Chinozo); Allyssa Sarenas from 6-Sapphire sang the English version of the Korean song "Only" by Lee Hi; and lastly, drawing the Grades 3-6 performances to a close, was Jam Brian Edmundo Sumayo from 6-Sapphire played the guitar while singing "Say You Won’t Let Go" by James Arthur.
In addition to the eight main performers, there were also five special performances by students from Kinder to Grade 2. A group called Power 5 consisting of Grade 2 students Cris Paculanang II, Aya Maria Villamayor, Zion Zingapan, Alexard Espino, and Aya Martheen Abaigar performed a dance number on the song “Kinang Pilipinas" by Shine Philippines. 2035 Band, a group of Grade 1 students— Francesslyn de Leon as the drummer, Macy Parlade as the vocalist, Luke Zaide Santos as the guitarist, and Mary Elisabeth Martinez as the pianist—performed “UP Naming Mahal” and “Dynamite” by BTS. Francesslyn de Leon from 1-Pipit played the keyboard while singing “Sana'' by Jolina Magdangal, Zandro Edwin Patnongon from 1-Kalaw sang “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Amstrong, and lastly, Danielle Sheyla Ulaso from K-Liryo sang “Speechless” by Naomi Scott.
Tumblr media
Following the last special performance, the winners were announced. There was a Championship Award and Crowd Favorite Awards for the 3-6 performers and the K-2 performers. Whitebored Band bagged both the Champion award and the Crowd Favorite Award for Grades 3-6. The K-2 Crowd Favorite award was given to 2035 Band.
Tumblr media
The members of Whitebored Band expressed their happiness and sense of victory for winning. They thanked their parents for supporting them all throughout their rehearsals and for paying the reservation for the studio where they practiced. They also thanked their teachers and their advisers for supporting them and encouraging them to participate. They also said they miss Jsam Samudio, the band's supposed vocalist, who wasn’t able to attend due to illness.
“We really miss him and we wish he were here with us to perform on stage," said Lucas.
This year’s Variety Show proved to be a success, overcoming numerous scheduling challenges posed by the extreme heat and suspension of face-to-face classes. According to Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral (PKA) 3-6 President, Ethan Lakip, the biggest challenge in organizing this event was the unforeseen changes to the UPIS Week schedule due to the recent high heat index. This caused the original date of the Variety Show on April 17 to be moved to May 10, and eventually to May 22. He also added that due to the suspensions announced by UPIS, the original 4-day UPIS Week was streamlined to one day, forcing them to reschedule some events and cancel other events such as TALAYTAY: K-2 Palarong Pambata, 3-12 Sports Festival, TALISIK: 7-12 Trivia Competition, and ATLANT-ISKO: Club Wars.
Despite these hindrances, the Variety Show was able to push through and the students from Kinder to Grade 6 were able to showcase their talents.

Oldest Filipino political prisoner turns 85, appeals for executive clemency
Tumblr media
via Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas - KMP Facebook Page
Yesterday, April 23, 2024, Tatay Gerardo Dela Pena turned 85 years old. Tatay Gerardo is the country's oldest political prisoner. As the oldest political prisoner, Tatay Gerardo suffers from medical conditions including hypertension, deteriorating eyesight, and hearing impairment, further exacerbated by his advancing age. Last year, the Department of Justice’s Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP) issued Resolution No. OT-08-02-2023, which states that "Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) who are 70 years old and above, and even if they are considered high-risk, shall be considered for executive clemency if they have already served 10 years of their sentence. This consideration is especially applicable if they are suffering from old age, sickness, terminal or life-threatening illnesses, or other serious disabilities.” It is evident that Tatay Gerardo Dela Peña perfectly fits the criteria for executive clemency outlined in this resolution. Who is Tatay Gerardo Dela Peña? Gerardo Dela Peña is a Martial Law veteran and survivor. Just like many other martial law victim-survivors, Tatay Gerardo hails from the peasantry in the province of Camarines Norte in Bicol. Tatay Gerardo, as he is affectionately called, dedicated himself to activism and organizing within his community, standing up against the oppressive dictatorship of Marcos Sr. In 1982, Tatay Gerardo was subjected to arrest, torture, and detention by police and military forces. Trumped-up charges of subversion and robbery were filed against him, he later was acquitted of these charges. While in detention, Tatay Gerardo ran for Barangay Captain and won, a move that ultimately facilitated his release in 1983. Following his freedom, he continued his service to his community by instituting programs dedicated to peace and order, dispute resolution, and access to justice at the barangay level, among others. Later, with the downfall of the Marcos dictatoship and the founding of Samahan ng Ex-Detainees Laban saDetensyon at Aresto, (SELDA) Gerardo Dela Pena served as a founding member of SELDA and later as the chairperson of its provincial chapter in Camarines Norte. Tatay Gerardo remained steadfast in his commitment to peasant organizing and human rights advocacy within his home province. However, on March 21, 2013, at the age of 74, he was once again arrested, this time by the 49th Infantry Battalion in Brgy. Matango, Vinzons, Camarines Norte, on fabricated charges of murder. Ten months after his arrest, on December 12, 2013, Gerardo Dela Peña was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with a term of 20 to 40years. He is now serving his sentence at the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa. Human rights organizations both locally and internationally have fervently advocated for his immediate release, citing not only his deteriorating health but also his innocence. These organizations have tirelessly campaigned for his inclusion on the list of candidates for executive clemency submitted to the Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP) for the December 2023 review. Despite all the efforts, Tatay Gerardo Dela Peña’s inclusion for executive clemency was denied by Malacanang. Tatay Gerardo's fervent wish is to spend his remaining years with his beloved wife and family. It is our collective hope that he receives the immediate freedom he deserves, not only for humanitarian reasons but also in recognition of his innocence and unwavering dedication to justice and human rights. # Free Gerardo Dela Pena! Women of the Present
We live in an era where society continues to hold women to such a different standard and point of view lower than the other gender. Whispers of disbelief echo loudly with stereotypes and continue to give limitations to the power they have. The thought of women in the past whose cries for help were ignored and whose ideas were disregarded lingers. Women have been told, “You are just a woman” countless times, and today, that perspective must be changed.
On the moment a little girl takes their first breath to a woman who was taught to stand tall, women have been confined to narrow boundaries and limited opportunities, unable to showcase their true potential. Yet, time and again, despite the challenges they face simply for being women, their resiliency and strength go beyond, freeing themselves from harsh words and discrimination to preserve future generations' inclusivity.
Moreover, women, without a doubt, persistently excel in different fields usually dominated by men, proving that gender is not a hindrance to success. Throughout the years, the Philippine Military Academy has allowed females to perform combat duties. Building companies inside and outside the country are now hiring female construction workers. As a regular passenger, you will witness women driving jeepneys, tricycles, and even trucks! There are also numerous female topnotchers in every Philippine Licensure Examination. In the Senate, some empowering women, both past and current, have been chosen to lead by example and represent and govern fellow Filipinos. Unlike in the past, women today can have education, vote, run for office, and serve as leaders. Women can now amplify their voices and be recognized for their abilities.
Exceptionally, women proved they could be doctors, too. In sports, women showed the nation that no amount of weight can weigh a woman down. In the arts, they are our country’s legacy for creating art using local materials. In the entertainment industry, women keep making waves by showcasing the unmatched talent of Filipino women. Filipino women have made multiple contributions to the humanities, arts, business, and academics, among other fields, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries. Indeed, women are the backbone of society. Their determination and indomitable spirit hold the society together. Women are here, there, and everywhere. Despite the obstacles they faced before, women continue to break through stereotypes with every step they take.
Notably, as the nation celebrates the 2024 National Women's Month with the theme "Lipunang Patas Sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan!" let us honor and respect every Filipino woman for their contributions to our nation's progress while also reaffirming our commitment to women's empowerment and gender equality. The government must continue to give support by training women for jobs traditionally done by men to enhance their skills further. These women continue to leave an indelible mark on society and have been catalysts for social transformation. Their tenacity continues to serve as a beacon of hope. May every citizen strive for a society where women are valued, respected, and allowed to succeed. As one, let's acknowledge women's boundless abilities, shaping a bright future that embraces all—for the fate of women lies within the hands of every woman in the present.
***
I wrote this essay as my entry in the recent online essay writing contest organized by our municipality's gender and development committee in celebration of International Women's Day, which placed second in the English category.
Thank you to everyone who extended their support, especially to my family & friends. My sincerest thanks to my parents for checking my essay before I submit them, and to Montalban GAD for organizing this writing event. Happy Literature Month and long live to all the women of the present and future!

When Rocel and I started dating she was training young journalists and helping another organization promote safe and transparent elections. I knew from the beginning that her drive would take her places, and if we stuck together, it would take us places too.
In a few weeks, her latest milestone involves studying public health in the UK on a full scholarship. Thanks to the privilege of being a freelance designer with a US passport, I’ll be joining her in our new home.
My hope for her is that she has a renewed sense of vigor, after years of working inside the eye of a storm involving a global pandemic complicated by fake news that has been just as viral. Not that she has been drained or disenchanted by her work, but because we both know that this masters degree will help her (and the people she works with, and for) weather storms in the future. A Bisaya word that comes to my mind is “paglig-on” = to strengthen.
Here Rocel is wearing a one-of-a-kind two-way hablon top with detachable Filipiniana sleeves emblazoned with hand sewn floral lace by Iloilo’s very own lin.ay.ph.
Salamat gid Pilipinas, see you again soon.

Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro as reported in the Press decided for some Reason to suddenly issue a rebuke to Countries that were against the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), saying that it was “None of their Business” and that they were “Paranoid” if they think these will be used to attack them.
First of all, Teodoro is fooling nobody here except perhaps himself, clearly he is alluding to China since they were the ones to voice out against EDCA and how it will be used to attack them. If so, then why did he refuse to name them then, ‘aber’?
Is he supposed to be “Brave”, and yet was afraid to name names? Absolute Hypocrisy and confusion. He either should’ve called China out, or just shut the fakk up about it.
Second, I find this a bit of a disappointment because based on his Pronouncements before, it seemed like he was willing to be more diplomatic with China. However, I think the Americans and the Pro-United States (US) Sectors in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) might’ve decided that he was too “Soft” on China, and thus started criticizing him among themselves, hence the Knee-Jerk reaction on Teodoro’s part now to suddenly try to criticize China.
With an Organization like the AFP, the Defense Sec. might not truly be fully in control of the Organization and needs to be on their good side, especially with the strong influence now of the US in Baby M’s Administration

Another fuel tanker, identified as the “MTKR Jason Bradley,” sank in shallow waters off Mariveles, Bataan, on Saturday afternoon as salvage operations on the sunken Terra Nova, which is still carrying its cargo of 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel, was postponed, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Sunday.
According to the PCG, Jason Bradley was reported to have no cargo on board, but PCG divers found fuel leaks on the vessel and an undetermined amount of diesel.
The oil tanker sank Saturday afternoon in waters nine meters deep off Barangay Cabcaben, just half a kilometer from the shore and just two days after the sinking of the Terranova on July 25.
As of July 27, the map indicates that the oil spill may cover an area of approximately 68.01 square kilometers, a significant increase from [Philippine Space Agency or] PhilSA’s July 26 estimate of 14.4 square kilometers.
“We haven’t fully recovered from the severe impact of Supertyphoon Carina and the current southwest monsoon,” said Richard Catenza, leader of a fishers group in Cavite.
“Fishing has been disrupted for over two months due to large waves and strong winds. We cannot endure another looming tragedy caused by this oil spill,” noting that the incident may also affect fish prices in the Manila Bay area.
Ronnel Arambulo, vice chairperson of the activist Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), criticized the government for the pace of its actions in both the Princess Empress [in 2023] and Terranova oil spills.
The organization said it is monitoring several coastal towns in Cavite that could be affected, including Tanza and Rosario, where more than 10,000 fisherfolk may be impacted.

Exploring Executive Assistant Opportunities in the Philippines
The role of an Executive assistant job Pilipinas has evolved significantly over the years, becoming integral to the smooth operation of many businesses. In the Philippines, these professionals are highly sought after for their ability to manage complex schedules, handle confidential information, and provide critical support to top executives. With a focus on organizational skills and a proactive approach, executive assistants in the Philippines play a key role in facilitating communication and ensuring that decision-makers have the information they need to succeed.
The Demand for Administrative Assistants
While executive assistants focus on supporting high-level staff, Administrative assistant jobs Philippines cater to a broader range of organizational needs. These roles are crucial in managing daily office tasks, which include scheduling meetings, handling correspondence, and maintaining records. The demand for skilled administrative assistants has been rising in the Philippines, reflecting the growth of various industries and the expansion of multinational companies. This has created numerous opportunities for those looking to build a career in office administration.
 Skills and Qualifications Needed
To excel in either executive or administrative assistant roles in the Philippines, certain skills and qualifications are essential. Proficiency in communication, both verbal and written, is crucial, as these roles often involve interacting with clients and stakeholders. Additionally, organizational skills, time management, and a keen attention to detail are required. Most employers also look for candidates who are proficient in computer applications like Microsoft Office and have at least a basic understanding of project management principles.
 Career Advancement Opportunities
For those dedicated to their roles, career advancement is a tangible goal. Many executive and administrative assistants can move into higher managerial positions within their organizations. This progression can come with greater responsibilities, including overseeing junior staff and participating in strategic planning. The potential for professional growth makes these roles appealing to ambitious individuals who are eager to develop their skills and take on new challenges.
 Salary Expectations and Job Outlook
