It's #FunFactFriday! Did you know that J1 “Ruffles” (est. 1951-2010) was an iconic member of J pod and was well known by whale watchers for his enormous waved dorsal fin that gave him his name? He spent most of his time J2 “Granny” and because of their close relationship, researchers thought J1 was the last calf of J2. However, a paternity study on the Southern Resident population in 2011 revealed that J2 wasn’t the mother of J1 and his mother was listed as unknown. In 2018 a genetic study revealed that J1's mother was in fact L45 "Asterix." Similar to L87 "Onyx," Ruffles was an L Pod whale who spent his time with J Pod. While this discovery was unexpected, it is also just another way that these animals continue to surprise us. Photo by @gary_j27 #orcaawarenessmonth #orcaactionmonth #ruffles #whaletales #orcalove #whales #killerwhales #orca #orcamonth #juneisorcamonth #salishsea #SRKW #JPod #getonaboat #exploreBC #storytelling #orcastory #orcafact #savetheorca #funfactfriday #dyk https://www.instagram.com/p/CPtH7LJL_TN/?utm_medium=tumblr

#orcafacts⠀ Southern Resident Killer Whales are the best studied population of marine mammal on Earth yet we still don't have a clear understanding of where these animals spend their winter months. All the more reason for continued research and more story submissions to our library! ⠀ Photo by @vitalocean⠀ #whaletales #whales #killerwhales #orca #orcamonth #juneisorcamonth #salishsea #SRKW #orcaactionmonth #orcaawarenessmonth #orcalove #JPod #getonaboat #exploreBC #storytelling #sharingiscaring #savetheorca https://www.instagram.com/p/CQHCeCxglha/?utm_medium=tumblr

#orcafacts⠀ Killer whales have huge appetites. Though their daily intake of food can vary based on a number of factors average-sized killer whales may eat about 500 pounds (227 kg) of food a day – about half of the weight of a grand piano! ⠀ Photo by @krisztinabalotay⠀ #orcaawarenessmonth #whaletales #orcalove #whales #killerwhales #orca #orcamonth #juneisorcamonth #getonaboat #storytelling #orcablog #orcalove #orcatrivia #trivia #funfacts https://www.instagram.com/p/CQl9ucGtHOF/?utm_medium=tumblr

#orcafacts: Of the three killer whale ecotypes you can find in British Columbia, Offshores are the most mysterious and the least studied despite the fact that they seem to travel in extremely large groups, sometimes of over 50 or 100 individuals! #orcafacts: There are three different ecotypes of orcas off the coast of BC: The fish-eating Residents, the marine mammal eating Bigg’s or Transients and the elusive and rare offshores, who are confirmed shark eaters (amongst other things). Photo by @taslishaw #whaletales #orcalove #whales #killerwhales #orca #orcamonth #juneisorcamonth#salishsea #SRKW #Biggs #NRKW #JPod #getonaboat #exploreBC #storytelling #sharingiscaring #savetheorca https://www.instagram.com/p/CBdkTS8h35S/?igshid=1xmjgskwbq9fa

#Orcafacts: The larger Type B Orcas in Antarctica, also know as Pack Ice Killer Whales, specialize in washing seals off of pack ice with waves they create as a group.
