Косатки являются самыми крупными представителями семейства дельфиновых. Порой косатки достигают длины в 10 метров и веса в 6-7 тонн. Зубы у косаток вырастают до 11-13 сантиметров в длину. Окраска косатки представлена двумя цветами, то есть черным и белым. Белым цветом у нее окрашено горло и живот, а черным – бока и спина. В северной части Тихого океана можно встретить косаток альбиносов и косаток меланистов (полностью черных), но это уже является следствием генетического отклонения.

Косатки являются хищниками высшего порядка, то есть никто из животных в дикой природе не охотятся на них. Они могут охотиться даже на крупных китов и акул. В сутки взрослой особи требуется 100-150 килограмм пищи. Иногда косаток называют «морскими волками», так как они предпочитают охотиться группами, как стаи волков. У косаток есть свой «язык», а особи из разных групп имеют свой диалект, если можно так назвать спектр звуков, которыми они обмениваются для общения. Косатки — животные социальные. Они предпочитают сосуществовать небольшими группами, связанными семейными узами. Иногда численность групп косаток может доходить до 40-50 особей.

Косатки обитают во всех океанах и в большинстве морей от экватора к полюсам, в разных по температуре водах. И придерживается диапазона в 800м. от берега. А еще косатки могут развивать скорость до 50 километров в час. При этом сердце косатки бьётся под водой в��вое реже, чем на поверхности. Средний период жизни этих удивительных созданий составляет от 50 до 60 лет.

Killer whales are social animals. They prefer to coexist in small groups connected by family ties. Sometimes the number of killer whale groups can reach 40-50 individuals.

Killer whales live in all oceans and in most seas from the equator to the poles, in waters of different temperatures. And sticks to the 800m range. from the shore. @naffeclipse I figured you’d be excited to see the humpbacks! One of the humpbacks in the area, named Valiant, has a reputation for getting into fights and interrupting orca hunts. You can imagine what that reminded me of~

Friendly Surprise

When out in open waters, Zorca can be very sneaky when they want to be! Sometimes they do so to be playful, other times its a simple (and often scary) misunderstanding.

Its always polite to send out a few clicks to alert any neighbors of their approach. But sometimes the receiver might not hear it, or maybe they were distracted. Even so, is anyone ever ready to come across someone who's two or three times their size, and in the water, no less??

I was looking for pictures to use for my presentation today and came across a Dodo article about how SeaWorld trainers drink killer whale milk.

I wish I were joking.

It looks like they've introduced live fish into the SeaWorld San Diego orca habitat for enrichment! This is so awesome to see and fantastic for the public to watch as well! It also means the orcas will be getting a lot more exercise and enrichment outside of sessions, which is great!

I'm hoping this continues and is rolled out at the other parks as well - it also depends on how the other orcas would respond. Anecdotally I have heard Katina gets a bit spooked by live fish.

It'll also be interesting to see if the orcas can do sessions in that pool and not get distracted or annoyed by the fish... that happened a lot with the dolphins I worked with in ocean facilities.

Why aren’t there as many orca documentaries as shark documentaries, think of the autistics!! I’ve watched every one I can find!

Ocean showdown: On a frigid day with thick falling snow, Nat Geo Explorer Bertie Gregory traveled cross the Drake Passage to film a rare Antarctic orca population known for hunting seals by creating waves that knock the marine mammals off pieces of ice.

Instead, the crew ended up documenting something unexpected: two humpback whales (pictured above, right) showed up to disrupt the hunt by the orca predators (above, left).
