@geragerawarau submitted: This is the most beautiful spider I’ve ever seen, and also the biggest! Is it an orb weaver of some sort? The abdomen doesn’t seem round enough though… Location is [removed] (please remove location when posting).
What a beauty! Looks like a marbled orbweaver. Their colors and patterns are super variable but they can definitely be this lovely shade of orange. This looks like a female who’s just made an egg sac, hence the shriveled abdomen. And I’d be willing to bet it’s inside that curled leaf there, which is one of their preferred places to make one.

Luscious purple for this antique summer kimono showing jorogumo (golden orb-weaver spider) on their delicate webs.
OP nicknamed this kimono 'Temptation of the Spider's Web', a nod to the fact jorogumo also used to designate dangerous youkai who loved to lure humans, especially men, and then devour them. They appeared as partly or full humans, always taking the shape of beautiful and entrancing women.
Their name was originally written with 女郎 kanji lit. meaning “whore” which may explain the association often found in tales between them and classical yujo (prostitute) features and tools – such as cord instruments (like shamisen, or sometimes biwa).

a new Argiope species for me, but one that may be familiar to folks in the Americas. the Banded Garden Spider is native to North and South America, but is now also found in parts of Africa, Europe, and Australasia.

🫧Dewdrops of the Widow 🫧
This is my latest piece, one I really poured my heart into. I wanted to focus on creating an intricate and atmospheric design, playing with textures, lighting, and the delicate details in her web. I find myself fascinated with spiders, was inspired by the spotted orb weaver.
Did you know that only female orb weavers create those classic webs? Once males mature, they stop weaving altogether. Instead, they dedicate their energy to finding a mate, often wandering far and wide in search of a partner.
What do you feel when you look at this piece?

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
If you're decorating for Halloween, you might want to invite a Darwin's bark spider! This species produces the largest orb webs, reaching up to 28,000 square centimetres (4,340 sq in) in total area, and the anchor lines can span up to 25 metres (82 ft)! The silk of these webs is also the toughest known biological material, with a tensile strength of 1.6 GPa; gram for gram, it is ten times stronger than Kevlar.
