hi! I hope you don't mind me asking, but how do university exams work in italy? some Erasmus students that have come to my class mentioned oral/outloud exams instead of written ones and I find that so terrifying!! I'm used to oral presentations as a form of assessment, but going there and just... talking on whichever part of the notes that you're stuck with sounds wild to me! (also, good luck on your exams!!)
Hello anon! We do tend to have very little written exams. Keep in mind that clearly it all depends on what course you are studying for but the majority of exams here are oral. Especially for humanities where I would say 99% of exams tend to be oral. If you do have a written test it's usually accompanied by an oral part as well. How it works of course depends on the class and on the professor, but usually if you attended lectures you will be studying on your notes of the lectures, additional materials if they were included, plus at least one book, usually multiple books. When you get to your exam you wait to be called up by the professor, you go to them and your exams starts. They tend to ask questions that let you really talk and explain the stuff you have studied so you can show them you did understand things. The smart thing to do is to always add more informations that go beyond the question the professor has asked, the better you hold your monologue the better the result, which also means that your confidence plays a huge role. Depending on the professor and on the subject they ask you questions until they are satisfied. Usually you should always have at least one question about each part of the materials, so at least one on the lectures, and at least one on each book you had to study. Of course they can add more if they feel like it, so you never really know what to expect.
It is quite scary at first, but to be honest we do get a big preparation in high school, since there's a lot of oral tests there as well. So before uni you have a bit of a base already, even though it is very different because you have way more materials for a uni exam. To be quite honest I am so used to it that now I think I'd get more nervous about a written exam. The thing is that when you are talking face to face with the professor you have room to improvise and get the conversation where you want it to go. In a written exam if you don't remember one specific thing your grade might go down by a lot, where in an oral exam you can have the professor see you understood things but maybe are forgetting a detail. There's pros and cons to both ways of course.
I hope I managed to answer your question, and that my explainations weren't too confusing. I'm happy to tell you more if you are curious, my asks are always open! (and thank you for the good luck wishes <3)

My Study Method
I have quickly mentioned my study method in several posts through the years but I don't think I have ever written a proper post about it, so here it is.
I have to say that overall my study method is quite time consuming, but in years of experience it's what works best for the type of learner I am, the materials I have to study and the type of exams I have. I believe these three elements are the fundamental things you should figure out when creating your own study method. Let's go over these things quickly. Firstly I am an history student, tho not all my exams are history based (I have taken some language, philosophy, anthropology and litterature classes) so my method is proofed for most humanities. I am a learner with terrible memory, if you give me a list of things to learn by heart expect me to fail because my brain simply cannot do that. So I have to train myself to learn things when studying for an exam. As for the type of matherials I have to work with when studying for an exam, they are mostly full non fiction books, sometimes I have to work on articles as well, and depending on the class I have lectures to attend.
The fundamental element of my study method are the notes I write. That's why in my daily posts I am constatly mentioning them. The lectures I attend are turned into notes, the books and articles I have to read are turned into notes, everything you leave me with for too long will be turned into notes. The very act of writing is what truly helps me get into the topic, understand it, and memorize it. I might write an indepth post on how I write notes in the future, but for now what you must know is that the goal of my notes is to be the only material I actually study in the end. As I mentioned the very act of writing is itself a huge part of my study process. When I am listening to a lecture I try to write down notes as tidy as possible, and then try to fix them at home if needed. So there's not much to say there, as for the materials I have to read here's how I do it. When I get a book I have to study I usually read a chapter and underline all the important bits that I will be transferring to my notes as I am reading. When I am done with the chapter and have the topic still fresh in mind I write down by hand all my notes. The goal is to write everything I need to know, in a direct and easy way using my own words. By re-elaborating the original text I am making sure I am not blindly copying things, and actually understanding stuff. Once the entire book has gone through this process, the book goes back on the shelf and as I said I only work on my notes from then one.
Once I have all my notes ready a long time has probably passed, but in reading and writing I have already started to memorize things in general. I try to highlight my notes as I am writing, but in case I don't I go back once I am done writing, doing a quick reread and highlighting important stuff. I usually use two different colours: yellow for the important dates and another colour for the other informations. At this point there's two more steps left. Repeating and writing key words.
If writing notes can be counted as half of my studying, repeating outloud is the second half. Since I have oral exams I have to make sure I am comfortable with exaplaining things, showing I have understood things and I am not just midlessly reciting a list, and using the right terms. I am a very lucky person because my dad is both retired and quite interested in the topics that I study, which means that I get a lot of help from him in this phase of studying, because basically what I do is following him around the house for a few days exaplaining my notes to him. If you do not have someone to annoy with your study, talking to yourself works too but you have to speak outloud and honestly pretend you are giving a lecture. If you just go over your notes and read them it is not the same thing, it's way less effective. I usually do two rounds of repeating. The first one looks a lot more like reading and saying things outloud in my own words. By the second one I am usually much more comfortable with informations so I have my notes there only to guide me through topics making sure I don't miss anything. Having someone who actively listents to you is definitely a bonus because if they ask you questions they challenge you in the exact same way an oral exam does, and you make sure your exaplainations are as clear as possible.
The very last step is going through my notes one last time with the goal of writing a long list of key words. This is a tool I specifically use to review things quickly the day of the exam. Usually during my commute I reread the list of words in my head and I mentally make sure I remember about everything.
As mentioned this is a longer study method but it truly locks things in your brain, and paying that much attention to note writing also makes them a tool that lasts in time. If I am interested in the informations of any of the books I read during my degree I can pick the notebook in which I wrote those notes and find the information right away without even having to open the actual book. I usually dedicate a whole notebook to each book, in order to archive and find them easily. I will be writing a specific post on the way I write notes, maybe including a few pictures, but in the meantime I hope this was somewhat helpful.
#kids i have written this the other day and rereading once so there is surely typos and not perfect sentences but i think it does the job#i am thinking of making one more post on how i write my notes since they are so important to me and then maybe writing a post on oral exams#do let me know if something isn't clear or it you have questions!#when i was still working on creating a stuy method i found posts like these quite useful so hopefully this will be helpful for someone#studyblr#studyinspo#study tips#study method#uniblr#university#historyblr#studying#student life#study motivation#study blog#study advice#mine#the---hermit

Thoughts on Iterators- a Series(?) Part one: A Puppets purpose
So many thoughts i think i ain't got enough brain power to store them-
Because i'm weird i can't just write down worldbuilding or any information i wanna remember in general.
So in order to coax my brain to write down anything i make the info into a comic (this also greatly improves my chances of actually rereading this and applying it to my work).
Wouldn't recommend it's highly inefficient.
This was supposed to have a fifth page but it was just kind of tagged on at the end and didn't follow the train of thought i had established so it's likely going to become it's own part (organic and synthetic personality traits + naming conventions).
I think the next part will focus on ACTUAL anatomy and what the essentials are for a puppet. I will get to the Superstructure too but i am monkey i like the thing with the face so it comes first.
Thank you for reading all of this if you wanna look i put a tiny scug in one of the panels see if you can find it (it's not all that hidden tbh but maybe that's just me).

I was called for an oral exam to answer some questions but midway through it, I was like, "Wait, why am I even doing this? This isn't real. I'm dreaming," and then I got up and left the room.

Good luck with your exam! Dropping a 🎲 for destressing if needed. :>
Aaah thank you! Your luck certainly worked wonders!!💙
You rolled 62! "That's too wild for me" and I'll pick.. Dottore (who's surprised) I'm going with one of my fav silly headcanons for this man.
It had been surprisingly easy to convince Dottore that a little time away was necessary. Suspiciously easy. Only a few honeyed words along complaints about the cold winter had him agreeing. But you knew better than to start questioning him, lest you present an argument that made him rethink the decision.
Fontaine was everything you'd longed for, lush fields teeming with life that had you gawking at every opportunity.
Dottore had convinced The Knave to let you stay in one of her little cottages a fair way outside the city, insisting it would be far more comfortable with a more private retreat.
"You're sure everything is fine?"
Not wanting to disturb the curious little creature happily chatting and pointing out landmarks, your voice remained a low whisper. You drank in the sharp outlines of mountains, the outline of something cubic briefly visible. You shook your head to clear it, surely it hadn't been floating?
"Quite."
His fingers tightened a little, thumb beginning to rub circles into the back of your hand, as if you were the one currently looking strung so tightly they might snap. Seeking to alleviate the tension a little, you leaned against his side, glint in your eyes when you whispered.
"You aren't tense because you're afraid those mechanic guards will arrest you the moment you set foot in the city?"
In the interest of subtlety, he'd forgone his usual attire, even the mask had been left behind on the nightstand when you'd gotten up this morning. The click of his tongue brought your mind back in time to hear the low grumble of a reply.
"You'd think so little of me? Nothing that can be traced back, of course," he paused for a moment, moving his free hand to your thigh and giving it a small squeeze, "and they're called 'gardemeks'."
Fontaine's Research Institute had filled the main streets with wondrous inventions, sounds of laughter reaching your ears the moment the aquabus docked. Neither of you had known beforehand about the festival, and you swore Dottore suddenly didn't seem as pale as he had seconds before.
It was always amusing to observe when he became so animated, eyes lighting up with an almost childlike sense of wonder as he paced around, prodding and fidgeting with anything they'd let him touch and then some.
He'd flashed you a toothy grin upon acquiring a fully functional miniature clockwork mecha, moving about the joints as the inventor happily gushed about how he'd optimized the pneumosia relays far beyond what should be possible.
A mistake on the inventors part, but who could fault him for disregarding the possibility that he might be aiding someone considered an enemy. You chuckled, shaking your head with a smile, on second thought, you could mention at least one person who might fault someone for that.
What had caught your eye in particular, was a large metal construction, the top barely visible from within the city. It didn't taken more than a tug at his sleeve and a glance cast towards the attraction before Dottore was making a beeline towards it. His enthusiasm paled when it came fully into view.
A large wheel made of metal beams, spinning languidly as small, colourful carts dangled from the framework. Colorful lights were scattered along the structure, adding to the oddly whimsical atmosphere around it. Before you could notice how wide Dottore's eyes had gotten, you were already trying to tug him closer, grunting at how much resistance the man was suddenly putting up.
Upon turning your head, confusion began to flood your thoughts. Why did he look almost afraid?
"You don't want to go with me?"
"I do, there is just," his eyes flickered and you knew he was lying, "something I must take a look at first. I'll join you in a moment, go on and get in line."
"Will you at least tell my why you're acting so strangely all of a sudden? Shouldn't you be excited about an opportunity to try something like this, the first of its kind? Sure, it's not as 'useful' as the stuff you make, but entertainment has value and I for one would like to-"
Before you could finish, he'd yanked your wrist and was holding you flush against his chest.
"Kinetosis. It's simply too... wild for me," he practically spat out the words, disdain dripping from the words.
You noted with a raised eyebrow that he'd turned his head away, the tips of his ears slightly pink. That in itself was enough to keep you from laughing despite the ridiculousness of something so painfully mundane being the cause of his anguish.
Butterflies fluttered in your stomach at the trust it had no doubt taken to disclose. Despite knowing it would only last for the few days you had left in Fontaine, you couldn't help but relish in the feeling of such an inconsequential thing being the cause of your worries.
