Junhee has been cast in a We Will Rock You musical??? (more details under the cut)
his role is called 'Galileo' and apparently one of the other people cast for this role is a good old friend, Hyunkyu from Vromance, in addition to Onewe's Dongmyeong, VeriVery's Yeonho and Kwak Donghyun
most of the other cast (except for Lovelyz' Yein, I think) are professional musical actors, not idols
the musical will be on stage from September 22 to December 31 in 'The Good Theatre' in Daehangno

I am putting biases from the same group in the same poll so that I get a little bit less of well that's our overlap group, so I'm going to default to voting for that member and a little bit more do we bias the same people in groups. (Note: I know that in some cases I bias like half the group, no, I'm not going to narrow it down further.)
While this is not an exhaustive list of all my biases in all groups ever, I'm getting the point where I don't have as strong of opinions on active groups that I have biases on, so I'm just going to do 10 faves from disbanded and not active groups and leave it here.

if you could send any idol back to the dungeon of being a trainee, who would you pick
There are a lot of idols that I wish had more training or support - but I wouldn’t want them to go back to being a trainee, I’d want them to get the help they need to thrive in their current group
That said there are a few idols I’d love to see in an alternate reality/universe as trainees again.
Yein from Lovelyz. Love her, love the indie thing she’s got going on. But I’d love to see her have some more time training to be in a group that has second gen vibes. A group like Nine Muses or AOA. I think kpop is missing that right now, and with time she’d probably ace it. I feel like she and Mijoo specifically were incredible in Lovelyz, but could have thrived in a group with a different concept. I mean all of the members could have - but they stood out the most to me for that.
Jongho from Ateez. I feel like he gets pigeonholed as the group’s high note guy. I listen to Ateez, but I don’t listen to a lot of Ateez, so I could be wrong. I keep seeing people say he’s an incredible vocalist, but I don’t really see that - because I feel like he comes in for a high note and leaves. And his part - to me - is often overshadowed by the performance/rap line of the group. I’d love to see him go back as a trainee, get some more vocal training, and come back in a group more like BTOB where he can show off his range more. And really the same thing could be said for Seungmin from stray kids now that I think about it.
Gowoon from Berry Good. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a second chance than the members of Berry Good. That’s literally it - I just want to see her redebut in another group.

whenever ive watched a lovelyz video, like, if i had seen just a photo of each of the members, none of them look like they would be singing songs like these except for maybe kei...
maybe earlier they looked more like their music, cause yein looked like this in 2015:
Tumblr media
but she looks like this now:
Tumblr media
but as far as i can tell (i havent heard everything theyve ever done), their concept hasnt really changed.... their looks have but their music is at least in the same vein as their other stuff. and that’s fine, especially if theyre happy to be doing what theyre doing and are proud of their careers, i just hope that’s the case... like yein in that second image looks like she would catch someone listening to ah choo and make a face like “ew, what are you listening to” but she sings and performs that song all the time...
this isnt a post where i’m making some big point or whatever, i’m just saying it’s confusing as someone who doesnt know much about them, lol. like i watch a video for the first time, and i just cant help but feel like theyre giving me a different visual energy than the song is giving me... and tbh, i think i would be more interested in something that sounded like the impression i get from how they look and act... some of them give me vibes that remind me of like mamamoo or current-day apink or something... hmm

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2022: Kpop Edition - Soloists
Moving on to my next post in my top fives! In general, I’m not as in to soloists as I am groups just as a rule. One of my favorite things in music is use of harmony and voices working together, and that’s just something that groups are better suited to than soloists (and why a lot of my favorite songs of soloists are ones where they feature someone). That being said, the solists that I am into, I tend to be very into.
The category of soloists is going to consist of people who are (at least these days) purely soloists, and any members of a group where either their group did not have a body of work as a group this year or I only enjoy them as a soloist and not as part of the group. Someone who is debuting as a soloist but has previously been active in a group doesn’t count as a rookie for me, so all my soloists are in this list.
The list with representative MVs is under the cut!
Here’s a shoutout to the soloists that made my preliminary lists, but didn’t make it to the top five list (in approximately the order that I ran into their music this year): Woodz (”I Hate You”), Yein (“Plus N Minus”), Lee Sujeong (“My Name”), and Choi Suhwan (“Chance”).
5) Ryeowook
youtube
Ryeowook’s mini album, including “Hiding Words” (above) and “Bluebird” (https://youtu.be/fDIi1XFUWMs) was an amazing showcase of his voice. While he still participates in Super Junior comebacks as they happen, I pretty much only follow his solo career of the still active Super Junior members. His voice is beautiful and really captures his preferred genre’s emotions so well. I do appreciate the sort of magical realism of the MV for “Bluebird” though, and dithered over which one to pick as the representative song. In the end, “Hiding Words” is my favorite for how incredible his vocals are here.
4) Ryu Sujeong
youtube
I am so excited for a few of my Lovelyz biases to be starting to release solo music post Lovelyz that I actively like! Yein is in my honorable mentions above (as is Lee Sujeong who wasn’t one of my Lovelyz biases but had an excellent song anyhow), but Ryu Sujeong’s “Pink Moon” (above) was definitely my favorite solo release from a Lovelyz member post leaving Woolim. It really showcases the versatility of her voice and a direction that her style could be going as a soloist. Definitely looking forward to what she does next!
3) Lee Chaeyeon
youtube
I was so excited for Chaeyeon to finally have her solo debut! While I’d been hoping for her to eventually re-debut in a group post Iz*one because I feel like she really thrives in a well balanced group environment, I’m pretty happy with this album and MV. I was able to listen through to the album several times after it released and found it enjoyable and noticed new things each time. I love her voice, I think that the overall concepts present in the album and MV suited her, and most of all, I was relieved she was doing things again. Many of the songs off the album went on various of my playlists, and I do come back and listen to a lot of them just to listen to that song. I think that “Danny” (https://youtu.be/GOP_bBJ1pOo) also deserves a special mention here for having incredible storytelling based choreography that really captures my interest to go along with an awesome song.
2) Chungha
youtube
Chungha’s “Sparkling” really did a good job of showing off her voice and is yet another song and MV in her growing list that show off how versatile as a dancer and vocalist she is. She’s got such a nice voice, and this release is catchy. She’s such an amazing performer, and as I always, her releases make me want to see what she will do next along with really appreciating her current work.
1) Changmin
youtube
A thing that a lot of incredible vocalists in Kpop don’t have yet is vocal maturity, and Changmin’s “Devil” is really showing off just how complex and interesting Kpop gets when you have vocalists into their thirties who are really getting into the strength and maturity and richness of their voices. Very few vocalists in their teens and early twenties could execute this even a fraction as well, Changmin couldn’t have executed this even remotely this well in the early stages of his career, and I’m glad that he’s stuck around long enough to give us this incredible song. His voice is so rich, and he’s exploring new styles to him that showcase that. I am really hoping that we keep getting incredible solos from him that showcase that vocal maturity and richness.
While I’m not generally as into soloists as I am into groups, feel free to recommend things to me! I’m sure that I’ve missed people that I would really enjoy.
