#i’ve been working through some stuff in my head#and I’ve realised that so much of my life I’ve occupied the spaces in-between#like I acheived certain things in my life because I was literally the only one who stepped up#but it was also like. I wasn’t the first choice for something I was always just what was available#or I tried to carve out something for myself and it ended up either being taken away from me or getting ruined somehow#like when I was in the pipe band I became drum major because I was literally the only drummer (not that anyone really liked me…#i was just. the only choice there was until someone else came along).#or when I moved up the ladder at the tutoring service it was during Covid and I had to work so much harder because#we just didn’t have a full team.#or when I had to do my undergraduate thesis by myself because also covid#and now having to do my research project basically 100% by myself because my advisor ‘‘can’t’’ advise me#(except he can apparently write me some exam questions next semester)#idk I just feel like the extra frozen water on the side of the ice cube tray of life#and now I’m in Canada and I’m trying to make a place for myself#I want this to work out. I want to be able to solidify the life that I want without having to live on the fucking edge#I’m tired of staying in my ‘lane’ when my ‘lane’ has always been ‘standing on the side to let others pass’#Listen up queers I am allowed to take up space and I am occupying this part of the lane#if you don’t like it then you can make your own fucking lane#I’m just trying to make a life in this ridiculous precarious world I don’t want to have to play it safe anymore#I want to get into a PhD programme and study what I want to study#I want to meet someone I can trust with myself when I’m fragile and someone who trusts me with themself when they’re fragile#I want to live in a house I don’t have to worry about losing and make enough money to live comfortably#I want to stop merely surviving and start *living*#and I’m going to do everything in my power to achieve that

57. Do you prefer editing as you write, or waiting until it’s finished?
Oh boy. I used to be utterly TERRIBLE about not being able to write unless I was happy with everything that I had down on the page up to that point, and that got... really destructive and bad during undergrad, because it extended not just to writing-for-fun, but also writing-for-academia. So I was in the middle of writing my undergraduate Honors thesis, and I'd get so that I'd spend hours editing and re-editing the introductory chapter-- WHICH WAS FINE, AND HAD BEEN FOR MONTHS-- and neglecting just getting the damn bones for chapter four down on paper.
And finally I was done with having to make excuses to my thesis advisor, so I drove two hours home one weekend, and dug around in my parents' basement until I found the electric typewriter my mom used to use for her payroll business in the early '90s-- the sort that had a tiny, narrow green display strip that would let you see one line of text at a time and correct ONLY THAT, and then it would type it, bam. Down on paper.
And that's how I wrote the first draft of my undergrad thesis: one line at a time on a typewriter, because I could not trust myself with a proper word processing program. Once I had it on paper, I could-- and did-- edit it into the ground. But it was about getting the words out, and learning to just do the damn thing, and make it flow and build correctly once I at least knew the shape.
Obviously, I don't write fic on a thirty year old electric typewriter, but the exercise definitely changed the way I write in general. I know now that I need to get the shape of the story down-- maybe not all of it, but at least the major points and beats-- and THEN I can fuck around with editing. If I don't just do the damn thing, it doesn't get done.
But it doesn't matter how many times I go over something, doesn't matter that my dad was literally a newspaper editor for a dog's age and my radar for an incorrect usage of "less" versus "fewer" is Stannis Baratheon-esque: I will hit publish on a fic and immediately find at least three typos.
65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.
Right now? A coherent sentence. COVID just knocked me for six and I started teaching again for the semester three weeks ago, so I'm doing well to write a lesson plan. But story-wise, I really want to finish my fic about Cassian as a cook, because that moment of him entering through the kitchen in the hotel on Ferrix to look for Bix, and running into the cook there-- I have so many questions. I've got the first section sorted, but I need to get back into the swing of things for the two following.
The problem is finding the time to do it when I don't need to be doing a million other things, alas. Living alone is awesome, but it also means that when you're like, "Damn, someone needs to mop the floor," that someone is always you.

Hello again!
This week, again, was a weirdly slow one. I picked up crocheting during election night so I had something to fidget with during the meltdown, and I haven’t really put it down since! I’ve got lots to do, but it’s cold and there are hats to be made! (classic procrastination excuse…)
Anyway, on Thursday I was able to meet up with Edward and Sean Arden in the MOCAP studio to talk about VR. They were both super helpful and very open to helping me out. I told them my idea, and they were totally for it! I asked about the possibility of having real-world props interact with VR props, and Sean said he had been working on something very similar that they are calling “proptics” or motion tracked objects, so I think that I won’t be too hard-pressed to make this weird world work. I just have to get working on it! There’s so much back and forth now in the world of COVID, it’s taken about 4-5 emails since Thursday just to arrange the pickup of a VR set to rent out from the IxD lab and I’m still not sure when I show up on Thursday that it will be available to take out.. haha fingers crossed!
One thing I’ve noticed in researching and looking into VR applications is how a lot of the efforts in progressing VR is made towards shooter games, but the most exciting work comes out of visual and performance art. I remember an early VR work I saw by Laurie Anderson, the Chalkroom. I revisited this work this week and was surprised that there are some similarities between that work and mine. Although hers is less involved physically, there is still a participant entering a room that is similar to the room inside the VR world.

After Sean told me about proptics, I looked them up and found Maria Lantin, who I’ve reached out to for a chat. I also came across this article about a VR experience that imagines Toronto after reconciliation and when nature takes over. The artist, Lisa Jackson, said something that I made me say “yeeeeeeesssssssssss I love this” (I think I’ll send her an email too, why not!)
“Being able to create new worlds within the immersive environment of VR is one of the most exciting pieces for me,” she says. “And I think for Indigenous folks, the world-views—whether or not we’ve been raised with the language—are so different from mainstream culture. [Using VR] is an opportunity to put people within a different world, and have them express the view and cultures of Indigenous people…It’s a great way to create a sense of place, and when you think that for Indigenous folks, culturally, place is so central to how territory relates to identity, I hope that it will spark more people to explore that medium and those connections.”
I think worlding is something that should be built up, something that creeps into your understanding like heat to the poor waterpot frog. This visual and physical connection of the room (before VR is put on), in real life, is one of those connective threads inside our minds that help us situate ourselves or suspend disbelief. Stories are another way of doing this. Can my workshop in storytelling to non-humans be the first step before the room? Each step of worlding increasing in concentration, until you reach the VR level of a pure fantasy world that, because of a graduated introduction, is not so much of an unrealistic fantasy after all? I wonder, always, about design vs art. Perhaps a comedown, a graduated ladder back to reality is where design can step in as a guide in how to turn this experience from an interactive art work to an actionable design work? This is where, I feel, the value of my project lies – these connections. Gentle but continuous waves of thoughtful approaches lapping on the beach, changing our cultural tide…. (high hopesssss high hopesss…. )
Talking about high hopes, again the scope of my project, I have to give myself some props for the work I’m doing, even if I feel slightly stagnant. I’m one person with many other due dates, and I think the extent to which this project COULD be, my magnum opus (hah) could only happen with a team of people – or a few more years of learning. I think I can definitely make the skeleton of it though – the stories and connections, as a designer, are my specialty. SYNTHESIS ~~~~

Ah ok, anyway…
I’ve been thinking about my sheep and the rug. Going to do a bit of sketching and thinking about foot gestures, to use gaming terms – easter eggs of movement that trigger responses of the VR sheep.
I’ve been playing around with piezos as well, nothing very in depth but just getting used to them and how they work. I would like to do a parallel circuit of up to 50 as output and 50 as input, so at this point I am just puttering around my desk soldering things to other things to see what works, while my partner tries to suppress laughter at my mad scientist mutterings.
OK so after writing this I definitely haaaave been doing some work since my last post – I think I’m just getting used to a new pace (I say, as we gear up into December presentations). The deadline for the bio-designed callout is Nov 16, so I’ve been working on my abstract. If you’ve made it this far, this is what I’m looking for feedback on right now!

my current abstract draft:
Humans segregate themselves as other than nature and other than technology. In our unbridled quest for knowledge, we have taxonomically divided the world into boxes, stacking them in order of importance and usefulness. This separation and conquest of information has undoubtedly attributed to incredible intellectual progress, but what of the inherent and uncategorical knowing that is held within beings other than ourselves? We know now, that the earthbound are standing at a precipice. We are looking out over a world that is shifting and revealing itself to us in new and infinite ways. As designers, we must become resilient, reciprocal and act accordingly to a world that no longer accepts things and devices that falsely promote themselves as ‘end-products’ and ‘solutions’. Designers are uniquely situated to adapt to these changes and have a responsibility to react ethically to emerging information and understandings. Actions of care can become radical in a new pluralistic future, but how do we direct ourselves and our peers towards this beacon while operating under yet diverging from the dominant design paradigms of individualism, objectivism, universalism, and solutionism? 1.
As part of my undergraduate thesis, I have been working within the realm of design fiction to explore empathetic entanglements between humans, nature, and technology. My research explores potential tangents of our current technological and biological systems to estimate a near future, through which I explore the potentials of non-hierarchical systems, decolonial and inherited relationships, and the holistic, messy and webbed entanglements inherent in all species (technology included). Through the use of diegetic prototypes, both in the physical realm and the virtual realm of VR, I am exploring the value of embodied experience as a tool for imparting care, specifically regarding the current climate emergency. By prototypes such as a device to translate plant communications to audio outputs alongside a VR replication of this device with added visual, haptic, and graphic translations; my work reveals relationships that have been uncared for and unseen in our current, anthropocentric world. Through worldbuilding, I will create a holobiont that incorporates technology as something to be cared for as kin, instead of something to be blamed for our demise. Weaving new possibilities into design work is often done through the use of critical design, and more specifically, design fiction. I want to use this design fiction to realize new possibilities in our changing world, and hope to use this project to expose new veins of interest within sustainability, consumption, and reciprocity.

COVID-19 Fashion School Grads ‘Pushing the Industry to Go Virtual’ – WWD

“You are the chosen class,” said Oprah Winfrey. “Building your community is how you change the world,” said LeBron James. “Leave behind the old ways of thinking that divide us,” said former President Obama.
Some of the biggest names on the planet converged for a virtual graduation special over the weekend to celebrate the class of 2020. The message? The coronavirus has been hard on all graduating students — high school and college — who must face a historic level of uncertainty when they were just raring to go into the world.
The quarantined months have been particularly hard on students of such hands-on disciplines as fashion, textile and product design, whose final collections had to be completed on bedroom floors instead of classrooms, and often without supplies, drawing tables, pattern-making equipment or sometimes even sewing machines.
Graduation celebrations were scrapped, and long-awaited debuts into the fashion world, via the graduate runway show, along with them. And as unemployment soars and fashion retail and brand bankruptcies loom, students face a challenging future.
But there are glimmers of hope in leaving behind those old ways of thinking, as Obama called them. In the first part of our class of 2020 series, WWD saluted the next generation of fashion designers and trailblazers at the Rhode Island School of Design, ArtCollege of Design and Savannah College of Art and Design. In part two, we shared the experiences of students at Academy of Art University, Otis College of Art and Design and Kent State University.
In the final part of the series, WWD takes a look at what’s being done differently for graduation, as well as some words of wisdom from students, faculty and administrators, at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the New School’s Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, NEW YORK CITY
New graduation plan:
FIT is planning an in-person undergraduate commencement in October at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden and a separate graduate school commencement ceremony. FIT will recognize the class of 2020 with a virtual graduation week celebration that began May 18. Since FIT’s annual “Future of Fashion” runway show was canceled, senior thesis collections will be featured on a web site, which will include a dedicated page for each graduate, representing five areas of specialization. In addition to social media visibility, FIT will produce an exhibition and film in the fall, featuring designs selected by industry experts and faculty (assuming it is safe to do so).
Career counseling:
FIT’s Career Internship Services continues to support graduating students with career preparation and development. In response to COVID-19, FIT recently hosted its first virtual career fair, in addition to offering students ongoing workshops to enhance virtual presentation skills for job interviews. “We’ve also been working with employers to understand their current needs, and continue to share related insights with our graduates so they can pivot as necessary, and communicate solutions during job interviews,” said Troy Richards, dean of the School of Art and Design. “Getting a job is going to require entrepreneurial skills. It might take a bit longer to find a job, but our students are so well prepared to hit the ground running, they will make a place for themselves.…We’ve also offered training in CLO 3-D software so students could translate their designs into digital models, strengthening skills during this time when everyone is speeding up production and cutting costs. Students have benefited significantly from feedback from industry critics, as well, as part of our senior program.”

“During this time, we are all encountering circumstances and challenges that we never expected. As I was approaching graduation and the beginning of my career, I was anticipating both an exciting period of growth, as well as an unknown path. It now seems that this path will be even more unpredictable. However, I believe that this unstable time creates an environment for young designers like myself to reimagine the boundaries and possibilities of the fashion industry. There is so much opportunity for exploration and innovation. Despite uncertainty, I look forward to the future, and I believe that my peers and I have the chance to bring new perspectives and vision to the table.”

The Parsons graduation ceremony went virtual on May 13 via Zoom for students and their loved ones across the globe. The hourlong program included remarks from Parsons leadership, program directors, faculty and students. “While circumstances are undoubtedly different this year, a few things remain constant. This includes our students’ unwavering dedication to and passion for their work as well as our commitment to celebrating and showcasing their achievements as widely as possible,” said interim dean Jason Kass. “As is always the case, our graduating students have done amazing work this year that explores new possibilities, terrains and futures for fashion. We are so excited to share this work with the public in the coming weeks and through a digital format that will be as uniquely Parsons as our typical on-site activations.”

“We went 100 percent remote and online learning for the spring and summer quarters, and it’s been great,” said Barbara Bundy, vice president, education at FIDM. “The thought process continually changes, because we’re living in this world of uncertainty, but right now it looks like we are doing San Francisco campus graduation in June and Los Angeles in September. What form it will take we don’t know. We usually do L.A. graduation at Staples Center, and with the reopening of large events and venues moved now to California’s reopening stage 4, who knows what will happen? We want to give our students a ceremony if possible. We also had to cancel our debut fashion show. But we were able to squeeze in a photo shoot with our advanced fashion design students before the stay-at-home order, and we are doing weekly Instagram takeovers with some students. We want to do a show, but where, when and how we don’t know.”
Career counseling:
“That’s the big thing, the uncertain job market,” Bundy said. “Students are putting their portfolios together, and the career center is working with them one-on-one to arrange initial interviews that are being done virtually. We are waiting for companies to open up as well….And in the meantime, we’re doing reaching out and saying, ‘Hi; we’re here if you have any needs.’ Our number-one recruiter over the years is Guess; they touch every major and have been dear partners. They sponsor our sustainability classes, and have been generous with scholarships. We’ve also been working with the Black Design Collective. And we’re looking at doing virtual job fairs. We are being creative.”
