Open Letter.

To the anti-BayoJeanne fandom,

I never thought I'd be writing a letter of this nature; especially a letter on such a trivial and nebulous subject as fandom and shipping. Yet, I am somehow obliged, if not forced, to do this, in reaction to the way you, and others, have been treating not only BayoJeanne shippers, but those critical of Bayonetta 3's ending.

First off, this is neither an attack on BayoLuka as a ship, nor those who liked/enjoyed the ending. You are allowed to ship whatever you want, enjoy anything you want, without harassment or intimidation. However, the actions of certain "fans" (if we can call them that, knowing how many alt-right and fascist reactionaries have infiltrated and somehow become Bayonetta "experts" overnight in order to spread their homophobic and antifeminist doctrines); harassing and attacking both BayoJeanne shippers and fans disappointed by the ending, is something I cannot ignore or stay silent about any longer.

Even before the third game came out, you, and others of your ilk, would be commenting under posts, even fanart and fanfiction, with comments like "how can you ship them? they are sisters!" and "how dare you make Bayonetta gay!". Granted, these are low-level, relatively milder comments than what would come later; but, for one, one would barely, if ever, make these comments about a heterosexual ship, let alone a femslash ship. These are, of course, common comments towards all and any lesbian/sapphic ship online, and BayoJeanne, most likely, isn't the first femslash ship to be under this (borderline) lesbophobic commentary from, usually, white, cishetro, internet trolls.

After Bayonetta 3, you, and others of your ilk, somehow decided to amplify your awfulness. As if Bayo 3's ending was the perfect fodder to "own the woke leftist gay mob". You went around on posts critiquing the ending, harassing and targeting queer folks with homophobic comments telling us to "cry harder" about BayoLuka being canon. Faintly, I still remember the misfortune of the second game coming out right at GamerGate, a decade ago, alt-right and reactionary mobsters misappropriating the game to justify their harassment of Quinn and Sarkeesian, and of queer and BIPOC gamers and journalists. These same folks, nearly eight years later, using this controversial ending, to attack and harass "the same" woke mob, and further line their pockets profiting off fascist hate. Search anything related to the series now, and I will see at least three or more video titles along the lines of "WOKE LEFTISTS TRIGGERED BY SEXY BAYONETTA!", and "CRAZED TWITTER MOB MAD THAT BAYONETTA LIKES DUDES!". As if I, a neurodivergent lesbian, wasn't already unsafe enough just existing in the gaming world.

I write this to talk about how Bayonetta, as a series, as a fandom, was a safe space to me as a lesbian. Granted, no online fandom is safe from "anti-woke" or alt-right harassment campaigns; I've been in the Fire Emblem and Doctor Who fandoms long enough to witness these things multiple times. I used to enjoy (and still do) lurking about on the Tumblr and X/Twitter tags to see what new fanart and theories my fellow Bayo fans had cooked up, or whatever humorous memes and discussions fans had on Reddit. The Bayonetta fandom used to be a relatively fun place, even with its problems. But the controversy over B3, from its ending, to its behind-the-scenes issues, managed to draw certain reactionary, alt-right maggots from out of the woodwork. Part of me cannot separate the enjoyment and joy I get out of Bayonetta, without thinking of the awfulness these things have caused.

To those bastards who have made this fandom an awful place; an eternal punishment awaits you in the depths of hell itself.

To my fellow fans forced to endure this homophobia and awfulness; a better day will someday come.

To the fans who still create awesome art, fics, and combo vids; I salute you and your creativity.

yooo how do you think dream and hermits will interact and work together? (and how will the fandoms react)

Disclaimer I approach this in the mindset that they are CC's that share spaces and will have interacted with eachother and also that they are each trying to do their best. No take of "Yeah that won't work because Dream is an asshole" here because he is not. Man goes to MCC to win and his strategies clash with others but it is never with malicious intent so if I see any of that... I will stare at you very dissapointed because we don't have to be rude okay?

Disclaimers aside lets analyze!

I belive the interactions would vary greatly depending on the configuration of the team! But in general I belive it will be a wild ride regardless lol.

If the ratio was Dream + a Hermit trio that would probably neutralize most of Dream's hyper competitivness simply cause man would be very awkward and he wouldn't have a right hand man to rely on so he would probably end in a more supportive role simply because he would be "the outsider". Still I have no doubt the Hermits would try to include him in that case and it would be very chill! Ren and Grian would probably try and do more casual conversationn than Cub or False... Pearl is inbetween... feel like she makes conversation easier depending on which other Hermits are close.

But overall no matter the Hermit trio that would be a more chill team

Now if it is a 2:2 ratio it gets interesting depending on what pairs you do! Dream won't be with George or Sapnap (this MCC) because they are on other teams alredy and thats the two people with whom he shares the most positive synergy and previous performances have shown that Dream in this situations would rather go for risky plays on his own and trust his team to back him up. Now Hermits (no matter what Hermits) are solid team players! They do best with a leader as they provide support and can step up in areas the leader might not be as knowledgable (often in Big Sales at Buildmart or Rocket Spleef)

Having both things clear then it makes the fourth person important, since it can either make it easier for Dream by turning on his right hand man and allowing him his risky plays while he stays with the Hermits for back up, or it can be a person that takes on the leader position and that + Hermits would again neutralize Dream.

Each configuration would vary greatly but I'm sure it would be chaotic, we would get memes and it might stir more or less salt from the fanbases... since this one can vary more I have no concrete answer sorry lol

Now the case of 3:1 but the alone person is a Hermit. The only Hermits that have done this are Pearl (since she wasn't a Hermit back then), Cub and Grian. False and Ren come in pairs, do not separate them. So regardless of the Hermit (Pearl, Cub or Grian) they will go into a support role because that's what they often do. Hermits even if alone will not be ENTIRELY alone so they would be playing with a Hermit adjacent friend or an S tier they've adopted alredy (Think Pete, Fruitberries, Ilumina, Jimmy, Scott, Martyn, Joel, etc)

Thus this looks similar to the 2:2 configuration alredy! but the Hermit friend and the person paired up with Dream are then the ones that make the difference.

If Dream's partner allows him to be the leader then we return to the "Dream makes risky plays and relays on team for backup" escenario, but if the Hermit friend is an S-tier they will probably take leadership and return to the "Dream gets neutralized and plays backup with the others" so this last escenario is the most volatile (as in it can vary the most)

Would any of this ones be awkward? I have no idea since I don't know the CC's and we wouldn't know if they have trained before MCC. Dream often helps train less expirienced CC's so that would be a great opportunity to strenghten the teams synergy.

Would it be funny? Absolutely! Hermits are very kind people but they can get sassy lol so I'm sure we would get at least a moment that reddit and Tumblr will meme to hell and back.

Will it be fun? I dunno! I hope it is! I hope both Dream and Hermits share a positive expirience if we get a team where they are teamed up. That depends on them at the end of the day and I'm sure if something does go wrong it will be solved or it won't be taken seriously stopping any drama.

Is that me being an idealist? You bet! And I rather be an idealist because I know for a FACT that no matter what happens with the team- The fanbases are going to EXPLODE

Now answering the second part of the question relates a lot with the scenarios proposed in the first ones. If the team has a positive expirience in reduces the chances for the fanbases to get upset.

But still there is tension between the two fanbases so it won't be a smooth ride.

On one hand we have Hermitfans and Dream fans that regardless of what happen will be chill about it, because it is a minecraft tournament with no price so either they win or they lose or something just explodes this fans will be very calm about it, or indifferent as well.

Next you have the true winners of the event, the hc x dsmp people (hello!) no matter what the hell happens with the fanbases as long as that section of fans can take this interactions as refferent for future hc x dsmp content, it will be all hunky- dory

And now you have the section of the fans that will raise hell if something goes wrong and the most vocal sector that will probably suck the fun out of the event and put us all through a spiral of negativity. The people that get defensive.

The people that get defensive (now will be reffered to as LC for Loud Crowd to make things easier for me) will receive this team negatively from the start.

Either LC peeps that are fans of Dream will be upset their CC has been paired with a bunch of 'nobodies' or will have another preconcived reason to hate on the Hermits (it can be hermitwt, or something ''''''problematic'''''' or they just don't vibe with them, pick one cause it could be any of those).

Or the LC on the Hermits side will be mad that Hermits have to team up with Dream and will go too far on an attempt to defend the Hermits. Moving the conversation from neutral grounds to a shouting match (yes I'm on hermitblr and hermitwt, yes we have failed guys. We can be upset but going too far won't help us)

Both sides don't come from the same point of view, the Hermits are an inconvinience for the LC in Dream's side and Dream is a threat for the LC in the side fo the Hermits. This is terrible because Hermit fans that have legitimate reasons to not be happy about it cannot express them since it will provoque Dream's LC and on an attempt to defend themselves an unhappy Hermit fan will escalate, and yes this will result in a LC trying to protect the Hermits as well.

We saw this last MCC with the Red Rabbits win. Hbomb's fans (and by extension Hermitwt/hermitblr and other sectors of mcytblr/mcytwt) where not thrilled, not after H was harrassed by some of the Dream Team fans even if the glitch has been done previously and even Sapnap repeated that MCC (no matter if the circumstances where different, nobody deserves to be harassed. NO ONE, being upset is no excuse to harass people. NEVER).

This anger was directed at the offending fans that harassed H, but it also started being directed directly to the Red Rabbits (which is why many posts on tumblr and twitter circulated like 'hey doing that makes us no better come on') THE THING IS. The Dream Team's fanbase saw this, and a section (the LC) got mad that people where not happy Red Rabbits had won that + the posts of people being mad about Red Rabbits winning basically became a negative feedback.

If you where not a Red Rabbits fan you would get angry seeing that crowd demand people be happy about it and acting toxic over it. And if you where a Red Rabbit fan you would get angry at the people attacking your team.

Of course this is a gross oversimplification and the situation was far more complex, but I bring it up to explain what will happen. Both LC in either side will get defensive, provoquing eachother and escalating. This even before the event has started, and it can be made better or made worse depending on how things go for the team.

No matter if the other fans go "guys there is no need for this, we can be civil" this sort of negative feedback is too loud, too noticeable, too difficult to ignore that even if caused by a small percentage of people, will suck away the fun of the event.

So as to how the fanbases will react? I will hope that with curiosity, maybe caution but openess to see what happens, many people will be happy about it, maybe will not but will be chill about it and overall it won't be bad. What you get to see? thats an entire different story and I fear that most likely it won't be a pretty one.

But hey! We can be sure it will be an interesting event and that most likely we will get super fun and chaotic and memeable moments out of that team!

I saw a really sad twitter thread this afternoon that made me go search for reddit/random forum threads asking teachers why many of them tend to punish victims of bullying more than the actual bullies. The assumption that someone would make from looking through the teacher's point of view is that they're trying to teach both children conflict resolution skills (that in which involves the targeted child learning how to compose themselves and begin de-escalation on their own terms), but this does not at all appropriately suit the viscious reality of bullying nor address why the victim in particular is disproportionately punished. I typically assume that teachers -as authority figures- want to maintain some kind of order they have control over and that relying on the existing pecking order that kids mimic from looking at the adult world (with all its unpleasantries and bigotry) usually is the least complicated way of doing this. One child picking on another can merely be read as a "disruption" while the victim fighting back becomes a "situation" that the teacher has to actively diffuse (by further disempowering the victim and encouraging them to endure it). There's also the elephant in the room that children are largely just not acknowledged as people with real or meaningful problems.

anyway, onto my actual findings. I had to wade through a lot of paragraphs to get some answers because teachers who perpetuate this (or who have the misfortune of bearing witness to it and can't do anything) seem to have some awareness of the embarrassment it is. The most frequent answers I found were the following:

Uhhhhh no we don't -_- you don't get what's actually happening -_- or if we did then the kid did something to warrant it

Actually through discouraging them from telling us about it, we are teaching them to stand up for themsemves

If i breathe wrong in front of these kids without having a well documented paper trail, either I will get fired or the school will get hit with a lawsuit

It is too much work to deal with it most of the time

Inside Eroda, the fictional Harry Styles island that’s baffled the internet

It all started on November 20. A Twitter account opened in October released its first post: “The Isle of Eroda’s rich history is embedded in daily life as the ruins of many structures from the past remain standing across the land. #VisitEroda”

It looked like a new marketing campaign for a little-visited, off-beat beauty spot. But a quick search would show it didn’t actually exist. Yet, Eroda had a website. Advertisements for the place were popping up on Facebook and Google. People interested in all manner of nerdy subcultures were foxed – it had the whiff of a clever marketing campaign about it, but what was it for?

Within hours, an Eroda subreddit had been created to discuss it. People dived deep into web hosting details, and only became more baffled as they seemed legitimate: “it ain't no kid doing a school project”. Was it a scam, a game, an elaborate prank? Some were convinced it was the beginning of a new Cloverfield film, World of Warcraft, a new Channel 4 series or even a means of human trafficking.

Meanwhile, scores of “Harries”, the sub-group of Directioners dedicated to Harry Styles, were piecing bits of evidence together. The pop star was due to release Adore You, the second single off his forthcoming sophomore album. “Adore” backwards was “Eroda”, and the video, released on November 23, looked like it had been shot in St Abbs, the Berwickshire fishing village where Styles had been spotted shooting in August. As Eroda claimed more of the internet, Harries  – some of the most forensic fans in the world – were sent into a flurry of investigation.

The goliath churn of a pop star marketing campaign is fairly familiar by now: cryptic social media teaser, excitable release date news, lyric video, full video, rinse, repeat.

Styles, who will release sophomore album Fine Line on December 13 and Adore You on Friday, satisfied many speculating fans on Monday with a near-three-minute-long trailer for the single, along with an illustration of the star standing in the ocean, surrounded by fish.

To those who had been studying Eroda for the past 10 days it was the confirmation they had been hankering for: Eroda was a Harry Styles project, and it confirmed what they had always known – that he is an artist beyond the normal realms of pop frippery (by contrast, former bandmate Louis Tomlinson spent the same afternoon releasing a video in which he sings in a bunker wearing a Stone Island parka).

Styles’ trailer introduced Eroda, showing it to be an island in the middle of the Irish Sea “shaped unmistakably like a frown, it is home to an all-but-forgotten fishing village that has had perpetual cloud cover for as long as anyone can remember”. Scenes appear of a typical coastal village, with crashing waves and brave little houses facing them. It gets increasingly weird: we learn that it is bad luck to “mention a pig in a fisherman’s pub” and to “whistle in the wind, in case you turn a gust into a gale”; the island mustn’t be left on odd-numbered days.  

The inhabitants of Eroda’s village always frown, calling it “resting fish face”. Until, that is, a beaming baby appears amidst the gloom. Deemed “peculiar” (a word that pops up a lot), the boy – who grows up to become Harry Style – was outcast, leading him to deal with his angst by screaming into jars. “He had lost his smile, and without it, the world grew darker, the wind colder, and the ocean more violent” the pan-European narrator explains. “Loneliness is an ocean full of travellers trying to find their place in the world”, she continues, as Harry finds himself bonding with a stubborn fish, before the film ends “to be continued…”

So far, so intriguing. But delve a little deeper into Eroda and you may find yourself wanting to visit. The island’s website – beautiful island views and a template dating back to the late Noughties – looks remarkably similar to those for any other charming coastal holiday destination, say Bute or Oban. “No Land Quite Like It”, reads Eroda’s strapline, before offering a familiar-enough menu: Accommodations, Attractions, Guide, Home and About Eroda. The video is similarly convincing: “Make memories for your senses at VisitEroda.com”, a dulcet-voiced woman encourages over shots of crabmeat and speedboats.

It didn’t take long for the Harries to take over the Eroda subreddit, moderators becoming increasingly rigid in ruling nuggets of unrelated Eroda flotsam irrelevant to the cause of discovery (such as the user who wanted to discuss Eroda, but without any intervention from the Harries). Tumblr users were similarly invested: “What do the ominous references to Him portend? What are they serving at those town dinners? You think it’s a cute little coastal AU [alternative universe] but upon closer examination it’s full-on Wicker Man meets Hotel California meets Nightvale in the afterlife (which is what most of those places are anyway so sure why not),” posted 1D Discourse of the Day.

The whole thing is littered with wordplay. Eroda, for one, is Adore backwards (Harry’s next single is called Adore You). But, as Directioners have pointed out, the copy throughout the website nods to forthcoming Styles songs: The Fisherman’s Pub is located on the corner of Cherry Street and Golden Way (Cherry is one new song, Golden is another); the album will be released on Friday, 13 December and Eroda recommends avoiding a departure on an odd-numbered day. Eroda’s fishermen wear a single gold earring for good fortune – a look historically sported by Styles.

Directioners went further still: the hosting for VisitEroda.com and Styles’ website, doyouknowwhoyouare.com, were owned by the same company, MarkMonitor.inc. Social media pixels linked pages about Styles with Eroda. Fans became suspicious over Visit Eroda adverts appearing not on their social channels or YouTube, but, of all places, on Wikipedia. “I'M FROM FRICKING PORTUGAL,” a baffled Reddit user posted. “NOTHING EVER HAPPENS HERE. WHY IS THIS HERE”.

Eroda had analog presence, too. A4 pamphlets – the kind of thing one could make on MS Publisher circa 1998 – appeared in the freesheet boxes on the pavements of Manhattan. At a promo event in Paris, Harry was asked about Eroda by a fan. He remained silent, but those who were there claim he “made a face”.

By November 29, more evidence arrived. A short film “advert”, which used footage from the trailer released on Monday, was screened by a new Harry Styles fan account from “Eroda”. They said the film appeared in a cinema in Kinlochbervie, on Scotland’s northern coast; the Eroda account then started to tweet about cinema screening times.  Eagle-eyed fans were swift to post screengrabs, showing similar island formations in the background of both the Eroda advert and that featuring Styles. The two were linked.

Kinlochbervie was, fittingly, a bit of a red herring: the footage shown in both the advert and the video trailer was actually taken in St Abbs, a picturesque fishing village in Berwickshire that’s no stranger to a rolling camera – it was “twinned” with New Asgard after being used as a location for Thor’s new home in Avengers Endgame.

Styles was there in August, shooting, it appears, a few things for the forthcoming album campaign. He and his crew used Angela Morris’s cottage, in St Abbs’ Sea View Terrace, as a green room during the three days of filming in the village, after Morris had responded to a note being popped through the door from a filming company. “One Thursday I was just coming home from work and there was Harry walking into the house,” she tells me. “All of the costumes were in the living room, make-up was going on in the kitchen.

“I asked if I could wait in the garden before my husband and I went out for the evening, so I just sat there when Harry came out,” Morris said. “I think he was having a coffee, and he sat down and chatted, asked me about bits and pieces about the village. I was talking to him about his Gucci clothes and we had a bit of a laugh. I wasn’t too starstruck, really, and I think he appreciated that.” Later on in the shoot, Styles invited Morris and her husband to share a glass of champagne with him and the crew.

While the shoot interrupted the sleepy pace of life on St Abbs for a few days – Morris says that visitor numbers had already been boosted by Avengers Endgame but small crowds of teenage girls began to crop up after word spread of Harry’s location – most villagers, she reckons, are pleased to see the place put on the map: “Most people I saw were embracing it and interested to see what was going on.”

A German artist named Mario Klingemann was, however, more incensed when his holiday collided with the shoot: “I didn't know who Harry Styles was until today when I learned that he's the guy who blocked off the entire St Abbs harbour and prevented us from enjoying our fresh crab rolls," he posted on Twitter, aggrieved.

But Morris found out about Eroda much like everybody else – through Facebook. “It’s really odd,” she assess. “Lovely footage of beautiful St Abbs, though.”

Long-lens pap shots from that shoot certainly seem to match up with what we’ve seen of Eroda so far. Styles gangles around in Seventies suits, befitting the aesthetic of his trailer. The smoking gun, though, is the presence of a young woman with hair that brings to mind a Dr Seuss illustration, or the hat Princess Beatrice wore at the Cambridges’ wedding. VisitEroda’s “about” page explains: “The primary occupation in Eroda is fishing, however, the island’s art scene has recently started to develop. In particular, Erodean hairstyles have become a rather bold expression of self amongst the island’s youth”. Clearly, these are scenes of Eroda that are being filmed.

There’s an unmistakably ominous air to Eroda, and some believe the video for Adore You will see some misfortune befall Styles – there were reports of a (fake) gunshot being filmed in St Abbs while he was there.

But what happens next is arguably less intriguing than what we’ve been given with Eroda so far. We are well-used to being nudged and prodded by pop stars ahead of a new release. Major albums aren’t so much brought out as “dropped” or “leaked”, arriving online in the middle of the night before their fans disseminate them through the internet. Fans, rather than critics, are given early listens – and under tight NDAs. Artists will clear their channels to mark a new direction, only to give us elaborate photoshoots and contrived poetry to create a “concept”.

Eroda is undeniably a “concept” – themes of loneliness, peculiarity, conformity and happiness have been woven into the fictional island from the off. But it’s been artfully done; look deep enough into the Reddit forums and you’ll see non-Styles fans begrudgingly accepting that this is the work of a former boy band frontman, rather than that of a somehow more “serious” game creator, filmmaker or even musician. Furthermore, it’s fun – and that’s all too rare in a pop world where things have become obsessed with authenticity, and a rogue comment can result in “cancellation”. One Directioner popped up on a thread only to add, “As someone who works in marketing/promotion... This is fucking genius. Harry Styles' team is tops”, and it’s difficult to disagree.

After a decade in which stars have had to up their social media presence to survive, tweaking and teasing their listenership in ever-increasing desperation to retain shrinking attention spans, Styles is closing out the 2010s with the greatest album campaign we’ve seen so far. As an artistic statement, it suggests the 2020s will be his to claim.

Let us start this blog by asking what is a fan? How do you consider yourself to be one? Can you still be a fan if you did not have a certain trait? A fan is considered to be an audience member that shares a love of a certain type of media, whether it is a celebrity, TV / movie / video game franchise, sports team, etc. Fans are invested in their favourite media as they would examine the plots, characters and the texts’ messages. Now, before we get into further detail about fandoms, let me tell you my experiences as a fan. I am a fan of many things, from sports to blockbuster films and TV series to gaming. I would often wear shirts / sweaters from my favourite teams, I have a couple of gaming T-shirts, I would attend sporting events. I would not really consider myself as hardcore as some people would describe themselves. Later on, in this blog, I will give out some examples of fandoms that tend to be a little too much.

One franchise that I would like to talk about is Star Wars. I am an avid Star Wars fan, I have seen the original films multiple times, played some of the games when I was younger. So, you might say, I am a Star Wars nut. The fan base has a reputation for being toxic. When the first of the prequels came out, two of the actors, one who played Anakin Skywalker, Jake Lloyd and one who played Jar Jar Binks were not well-received. They got a ton of hate from the fans and it messed them up both bad. One other example that would be worth discussing is fandom of the Netflix television series, Stranger Things. For those who are not familiar with the show, it is set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The series revolves around supernatural events happening in the town, including the appearance of a mysterious girl with telekinetic abilities. Fan involvement with the show included social media usage which included Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and Fanfare. Post patterns consisted of plot, re-watching, para-social and fan art. A wrong fact can lead to viewer complaints, angry programme commissioners, even legal and compliance problems.

That’s why work ex people and runners are often asked to make teas and coffees when they first start in a production company or edit house. If a newcomer can’t get something as basic as a tea and coffee round right, how can they be trusted with more important tasks like checking comm scripts and call sheets?

So here’s a tip – pay attention to detail in everything you do, especially when you are starting out in the media because first impressions matter. If your colleagues get the sense you’re not 100% focussed then you won’t get asked to do more challenging and rewarding tasks, you won’t be asked back and you won’t get a good reference after you’ve left.

And make sure your CV’s and intro e mails are spelt correctly too – mistakes indicate you’re not great at detail…

There is something pure about a friendship between young kids. The unconditional decision that “we’re friends now” is a joy to see. So much of adult friendship is based on schedules, compromises, planned excursions that it is good to be reminded about how simple it used to be. There are powerful friendships in X-Men, Kurt and Logan, Kitty and Rachel, Bobby and Hank, but more than all of those, is the unadulterated goodness of Artie and Leech.

Artie was a regular kid until his eleventh birthday. His mutant ability kicked in, turning his skin pink and lumpy and removing his ability to speak. He could psionically project manifestations of his thoughts but his communication skills were limited. His father, a scientist, tried experiments to cure his son and captured Beast to that end. X-Factor soon came to their friend’s rescue and a battle broke out. Knowing that Artie would be in the crossfire, Dr. Maddicks pleaded for X-Factor to take his boy to safety, sacrificing himself for his son.

Artie enjoyed his time with X-Factor and started looking up to Rusty, one of the older students. When they went to the Morlock Tunnels to assist in during the Mutant Massacre, Artie got lost and ran into Caliban and his new best friend Leech. Leech was a Morlock with green skin, a big head, and a grasp on sentence structure that could only come from growing up in the literal sewers. The trio was cornered by Sabertooth and Caliban was injured. Artie decided to be a hero and searched for X-Factor, only to find the god of Thunder instead. Thor helped the group make their way to X-Factor’s base and Leech didn’t forget Artie’s courage.

Artie and Leech became fast friends. All the other kids in X-Factor were older, they were worried about girls, and boys, and the future, and all sorts of things. Artie and Leech? They were just worried about playing. Sure they got caught up in adventures, but they were happier delivering Christmas presents to misfortunate children and messing around with the rest of the cast. X-Factor finally realized that eleven-year-old boys should probably be in a real school and sent them to St. Simons boarding school. The school quickly realized how close the boys were and declared that Artie and Leech were never to be separated.

At the school, they met a young boy named Taki. He was wheelchair bound and had a learning disability, combining that with the death of his parents turned Taki into a bitter boy. Artie and Leech, being the best kids, tried to reach out to him but Leech’s power negation field interfered with Taki’s electronics and Taki was not polite about it. Artie would not tolerate his best friend being treated like that and made Taki apologize. He came around to the power of friendship and became a buddy to the boys.

That night, demons under the command of N’Astirh captured the boys by mistake and brought them to their master. N’Astirh had little time for their incompetence but his goblins decided that it would be a shame to let good meat go to waste. N’Astirh told them that they could eat sweet Artie and Leech only after they captured the babies he would need to open a portal to Limbo. Artie used is powers to get a message out to the X-Factor kids and resigned himself to his fate. As the demons brought more and more babies, Artie and Leech did their best to keep the kids safe, even giving up the clothes on their back. Taki and the X-Terminators (Rusty, Boom Boom, Skids, and Rictor) freed the boys and saved the day, and Artie, Leech, and Taki returned to St. Simons to continue their studies.

The two moppets were eventually captured by Marrow and her Gene Nation and subsequently rescued by Generation X. Skin and Chamber helped the boys build a treehouse in the school’s biodome to call home. After Onslaught and the apparent death of the Fantastic Four, Franklin Richards joined them and became fast friends with the boys. They quickly assembled a motley crew including Howard the Duck, Man-Thing, and a Rigellian Recorder and jumped through dimensions to save the multiverse. Franklin eventually found his was home and the boys stayed at the school until it disbanded.

After M-Day they boys were split. Artie lost his projection powers but kept his physical deformity. Leech kept his powers and joined the 198 outside of the Xavier Institute. He found his way back to the Morlock tunnels where Masque imprisoned him for his own uses. They boys found their way back together thanks to their old buddy Franklin. At his birthday, Franklin wanted to give each of his guests a present. For Artie, he had his sister Valeria make a helmet to mimic his old powers. For both boys was a key to their new home, the Baxter Building.

Reed Richards decided that the key to the future rested with young children and enlisted Artie and Leech, as well as other young geniuses, in his new program the Future Foundation. Their goal? Solve Everything. The boys loved spending him with their friend Franklin, even if Leech was being used to covertly dampen Franklin’s reality warping powers. After the end of the universe, Artie and Leech joined their best friend Franklin and the rest of the Future Foundation and the edge of reality. Franklin had become akin to a god, recreating worlds and Franklin had Artie and Leech to be there with him.

Artie and Leech are consistently delightful and none more so than in a backup story for New Mutants Annual #7. Written by Judy Bogdanove and drawn by husband Jon, Close Encounters of the Mutant Kind is a delightful tale of Artie, Leech, and Taki getting confused for aliens and getting a new grandma. It is short, sweet, and adorable. Exactly like our two moppets. It is on Marvel Unlimited so go check it out.

So, I love Artie and Leech. I want them to live in my spare room and go on adorable adventures and never grow up. I am not under the impression that they are particularly deep characters but they fill their role perfectly. They are better X-Factor kids than Skids, but nowhere near as good as Boom Boom. I like them more than Caliban but less than Wolfsbane. They are like Omega Red in that, they aren’t deep but they are fun. I straight up like them more than Omega Red so that places them as the new number 40 in the Xavier Files.

Myetherwallet Servers Are Hijacked in DNS Attack

Myetherwallet (MEW), the web’s most popular client-side ethereum wallet, has been compromised by a DNS attack. Numerous users are reporting missing funds and Mycrypto, a sister site which spun off from MEW earlier this year, has confirmed as much. The incident highlights the dangers of relying on a centralized interface, even when the funds are held by the individual, and exposes the inherent weaknesses of the Domain Name System.

Myetherwallet Users Report Missing Funds

On April 24, scores of Myetherwallet users began to report suspicious activity when trying to access the web-based ethereum interface. As the web’s most popular client-side ethereum wallet, MEW is widely used for sending money to crowdsales, buying Cryptokitties, and conducting many more day-to-day transactions that involve sending ether or ERC20 tokens. The platform does not hold user funds, but like all websites it is still at risk of being hacked by having its DNS servers taken over, exposing the data of anyone who interacts with the service. Shortly after rumors began to circulate, MEW issued a tweet to confirm their veracity:

The first signs that something was wrong emanated from the Myetherwallet Reddit, where a user posted a thread entitled “Think I got scammed/phished/hacked”. They had twigged that something was amiss after seeing the following notice when visiting the site:

They explained: “Even though every part of my body told me not to try and log in, I did. As soon as I logged in, there was a countdown for about 10 seconds and A tx was made sending the available money I had on the wallet to another wallet.” The address the funds have been sent to currently displays on Etherscan with a warning noting that it may have been involved in a MEW scam. It has conducted 180 transactions, and claimed a total of 215 ETH. It’s been reported that MEW were redirected to an isp based in Russia.

Mycrypto Reveals More

Earlier this year, rival site Mycrypto launched as a direct competitor after the Myetherwallet founders went through an acrimonious split. While the Mycrypto team would not wish misfortune on any members of the ethereum community, there may have been a touch of schadenfreude evident in their willingness to frankly disclose the nature of the predicament MEW has found itself in, writing:

My crypto also wrote: “Lots of anti-phishing folks in the community and on our team are attempting to collect information about what happened to MEW, as well as attempting to get in touch with their team to assist in any way we can. Moral of the story: use a hardware wallet or run offline.” Services such as Myetherwallet and Mycrypto can be used in desktop versions by downloading the software, which eliminates the risk of DNS attack.

DNS attacks are becoming more prevalent. In December, another ethereum-based platform, Etherdelta, was hit by a similar attack to the one that has affected MEW, with users also reporting stolen funds. Myetherwallet is not the only crypto site to have had DNS issues today either. Earlier, Binance tweeted to say that Google’s DNS were down, preventing some users from accessing the exchange. Incidents such as today’s MEW attack demonstrate that for all the precautions a user may take, websites still present a single, centralized point of failure.
