(I’m going to preface this with I’m sorry if this comes off as aggressive or mean, I don’t mean it to be, just sometimes people getting Irish folklore wrong rlly frustrates meee, so now I’m going to aggressively educate you.)
(You didn’t even get too much wrong I’m sorrryyy)
The first two things are just names, like it’s the salmon of knowledge (not the salmon of wisdom) and his name is Fionn, not Finn (Finn is the anglocised version of fionn, but like it’s an Irish legend, teach people the Irish names ;-;)
And I’m just gonna leave out the whole first bit of the legend, because it’s not relevant, but Fionn didn’t even eat the salmon! The old man who he was with left Fionn to watch it while it cooked, and Fionn popped a blister with his thumb and then put it in his mouth because he got burned. The only thing that mattered was that Fionn got the first taste of the salmon, so he got all the knowledge.
I think this one depends on what version of the story you hear, but I’m pretty sure that he also only has all the knowledge when he puts his thumb in his mouth, because idk magic
Again sorry if this came off as mean! I’m just Irish and it frustrated me when people get our folklore wrongggg
it's all good
I do want to say though: im australian. ive never been to ireland, ive only ever left the country to go to italy for a student exchange.
So, although I knew that the last name wasn't 'mccool' and i knew it was 'mac cumhail' it didn't mean that i knew that his first name (which is more of a nickname in his stories to begin with - he's only called it because he wouldn't tell people his name so they called him blondie) was spelt wrong.
should i have researched it? probably.
did that give you a reason to rant in my inbox? no.
rant in tags. if it comes off as agressive, thats because this was what i woke up to.
#do you do this to everyone who misspells an irish name#or spells it how its spelt phonetically with the latin alphabet? you also straight#up admitted that you didn't read my post right.#and prefacing it with 'this isn't meant to be agressive#im just going to /agressively/ educate you' is fucking hypocritical.#im fucking tired dude#i dont do this to people who get australian myths/history wrong#what gives you the right to do it to me#especially when its KIND of obvious that i wasn't TAUGHT THE MYTH#I LEARNT IT THROUGH ANGLISICED SOURCES BECAUSE THATS ALL I HAVE ACCESS TO#I LOVE IRISH MYTHOLOGY#BUT EIGHT YEAR OLD ME HAD NO WAY TO FACT CHECK NAMES#like i get not wanting your mythologies to be incorrect#but you gotta remember that not everyone can a) remember pronunciations to words in other languages so spelling phonetically is easy#and b) NOT EVERYONE WAS RAISED BY IRISH PARENTS OR IN IRELAND#IM AUSSIE#THE CLOSEST THING I HAVE TO IRISH HERITAGE IS A COUPLE OF GENERATIONS BACK IN MY FAMILY#AND MY PARENTS DO NOT /CARE/ FOR MYTHOLOGIES
