Trance Dancing - The Rave
by Jason Keehn
(this essay was formerly posted at https://duversity.org/archives/rave.html, but it’s gone, so I’m saving it by copying it here)
Can trance-dancing save the planet
Can you imagine a crazier notion?
Thousands of bored youth pumping themselves up with drugs, going out to huge underground parties and dancing maniacally to electronic rhythms and psychedelic light-shows till dawn.
And this is supposed to help the world?
Shouldn't we be putting our time instead into ecological or political activism, or at least doing some kind of charity work? What about the serious spiritual disciplines that claim to offer the only true path to personal--and thereby social--transformation? What good does all our drug-taking and revelry do for the hundreds of millions of dispossessed, fucked over and starving around the world--not to mention all the untold species and eco-systems being destroyed?
Hard to answer. And yet some of us still have this inescapable feeling, maybe even faith, that what we are doing, confused, silly and commercialised as it often is, is at its core absolutely necessary. . . not just to us, but in the bigger picture, somehow. . .
Why is it that at the peak moments (admittedly rare) of the very best underground house/techno/rave parties, we get this miraculous sense of hope, of possibility, of transformation . . . a feeling that we're actually heading somewhere. . . together. . . towards a brighter future, one worth living in, one where we've returned to some kind of harmony with ourselves, with each other and with our planet as a whole?
Is it "just the drugs," a kind of consensus delusion, or might there be some basis in reality for these feelings, hard to justify as they may seem once we're back out in the normal world?
More dimly sensed than clearly expressed, the feeling for such a possibility permeates the entire global underground dance scene. Thousands of promoters exploit it to inflate their party invites with cheesy techno-spiritual imagery. It inspires and guides much of the music, and some small but key fraction of the hard-core partiers. The rest of the crowds who fill the floors at parties get off on it as a second or third-hand charge that sets the party apart from being just another club, without ever thinking about taking it seriously.
At moments, some hundreds, and maybe even thousands or tens of thousands, of "ravers" have probably found themselves sensing/feeling/wondering that what they were doing might be something really big, something that could really change things at a larger scale.
But of course only people who turn themselves inside out with large amounts of drugs would even conceive the question: Can trance-dancing save the planet?
A few of us, myself included, have made public fools of ourselves already by answering in the affirmative, and even giving some tentative reasons why. Here I want to try to introduce a new way of thinking that complements and deepens what already been proposed by people like Fraser Clarke and Terence McKenna. They see psychedelicized mass trance dances as the only quick, viable antidote to the egotism at the base of the western, techno-industrial mega-machine maniacally chomping away at the life-fabric of the planet.
This different line of thought is based on a simple but profound idea first expressed by the philosopher and teacher of temple dances G. I. Gurdjieff, who died in 1949. His idea is almost completely unknown, outside of his hard to read book All and Everything.
If true, it has staggering implications for ourselves, for our planet, even for our entire solar system. I don't expect anybody to automatically take it as Goddess's given truth, but its worthy of some serious attention.
Energies
As all "ravers" know, there is a mysterious something that makes a rave different from just another club or party-scene. We call this "the vibe"--a mixture of intangibles impossible to find anywhere else, except maybe at a dead show or a rainbow gathering. Roughly put, the vibe consists of: an attitude of openness, sharing, empathy and playfulness; intense, unselfconscious dancing; a collective altered state of consciousness, thanks to the combined effects of specific rhythms, lights and psychedelic drugs; and, at its height, a melding of group feeling and energy into an ecstatic, orgasmic release that feels nothing less than spiritual or religious--albeit in a form that has little resemblance to any type of spirituality or religion we are familiar with.
We all know that "energy" is somehow key to all of this. We know we raise and release energy through our dancing, our feelings, and our interaction on the dance-floor. Energy was one of the main buzzwords of the early English rave scene. The vibe is all about energy--vibration, after all.
But what is this energy? What does it consist of, where does it come from, where does it go? Are there different kinds of energies? Do they have different purposes?
Back around the turn of the century, Gurdjieff and a group of friends travelled back and forth across the Middle East and Central Asia investigating humanity's true history, the nature of the cosmos, and the possibilities for humans to evolve consciously, from their own efforts. In the process, "the seekers of truth," as the group called themselves, also encountered the Masters of Wisdom still alive in that part of the world (the Khwajagan). The Khwajagan were considered to be the bearers of some of the highest spiritual knowledge on the planet, handed down continuously for thousands of years.
One of the focuses of Gurdjieff's research was the transformation of substances and energies--both chemical and subtle--in the human organism. He also learned a large number of temple dances, which he understood as databases in movement intended to preserve ancient knowledge.
Eventually, Gurdjieff returned to the West and presented his synthesis of these searches as a "system of ideas" and a practical method for self-transformation.
Feeding the Moon
Gurdjieff's quest was guided by the basic question, "what is the sense and significance of human life on earth?"
His conclusion, expressed in writing only towards the end of his life, was that humanity does not exist for itself, but to supply the planet, the moon, and the solar system with a particular gradation of energy which they need to thrive and grow. At times he called this principle, "feeding the Moon," though it is not clear whether he meant this literally or merely as a handy symbol.
He believed that the entire universe is in some sense alive and in a process of continuously evolving (and if not evolving, actively devolving). In what could be compared to a cosmic fractal, the universe is in a process of unfolding and giving birth to itself, each birth at a new level mirroring in its unique way that of other levels (known nowadays as the principle of self-similarity). In what Gurdjieff called "the ray of creation," "God" or the Absolute gives birth to universes; universes give birth to stars, which give birth to planets, which give birth to organic life (viruses, bacteria, plants and animals) and to moons. Eventually a planet may become a star, its moon may become a planet in its turn, and "give birth" to its own moon, and so on, ad infinitum.
Just as all plants and animals need a variety of nutrients to exist, grow and reproduce, so our world and its siblings need a very specialised type of substance to fuel their processes--their planetary metabolisms, if you will. Supposedly, this special energetic substance can be produced only by human beings.
Reciprocal Maintenance
Gurdjieff's answer fits into what he called "the doctrine of reciprocal maintenance", the idea that every thing exists only insofar as it supports or "feeds" something else. Everything is part of a vast, interconnected and mutually reinforcing web of life. Or, "everything is something else's lunch," as ecologists like to say. This idea anticipated the science of ecology by at least half a century.
Examples: Bees don't just exist for themselves, they live to pollinate flowers. Algae exists to turn sunlight into more complex molecules, and feed other small creatures, such as plankton and krill. Krill feeds other slightly larger creatures, and even whales. Plants exist to turn sunlight and raw matter into organic compounds, and to feed animals. Worms exist to loosen soil for plants. Bacteria recycle waste into useable raw matter. Predators help to increase the strength and fitness of the herds they prey on by eliminating the weak and sick. Etc. etc.
In the scheme of things, humanity's essential role is that of a transformer of energy.
Human beings, according to this view, exist to serve the cosmic evolutionary process--and not the opposite, as the Bible would have it: that all of creation is merely a resource for us to use and abuse as we see fit.
Our possibilities as human beings are dependent on the degree to which we fulfil this function, a kind of "obligation" which nature imposes on us.
By Gurdjieff's view, this special energy could be produced two different ways: either involuntarily, at the moment of death, when a small "packet" is released into the atmosphere, or voluntarily, in greater or lesser amounts, through spiritual work.
Since Mother Nature, or Gaia, needs a definite quota of this energy from us, she will do whatever is necessary to make sure she gets it. If we don't provide the required intensities while alive, the total number of deaths will have to be increased in such a proportion as to yield the needed amount.
Devolution
Gurdjieff further believed that rather than progressing, the overall quality of human being (as opposed to externalizations like technology, culture, institutions, etc.) has actually been deteriorating over the last umpteen thousands of years, especially in "civilised" societies such as our own. He believed that in the very distant past, before the earliest recorded history, human beings had a much greater presence and power; in a sense, they were bigger, spiritually and existentially, than the vast majority of us today. He also believed that people once had a much greater life-span.
They were energy-pumps.
Gurdjieff had his speculations about what caused this decline in the quality of human being in the very remote past, perhaps even before the destruction of Atlantis (his theory of the "kundabuffer," explored at length in All and Everything). The upshot, though, is that humanity as a whole has "forgotten" how to perform its ecological function in the world--or simply no longer has the necessary juice to do it, which pretty much amounts to the same thing.
So if this is in fact the case--that we human beings generally no longer have the knowledge or ability to "pump" this energy intentionally--Gaia will be forced to increase the total quantity of human death to meet her needs.
This can be accomplished, of course, by 1) increasing the number of human births, and eventually deaths, and 2) by shortening the life-span of existing individuals, or 3) a combination of the two. The net results: Population increase. . . disease, and war.
Following this line of thinking, our increasing inability to properly transform and pump energy means that we have to be treated (by the Gaian mind, if you like) the same way we treat plants and animals, as something to be farmed, bred and harvested. Not a very dignified state of affairs!
So as the qualitative level of human being goes down, the number of human beings, and thereby of human deaths, goes up to account for the difference in energy. And of course, since organisms grow at different rates, with different energy requirements depending on their activities, we can imagine that there might be major fluctuations in the needs for our energies.
The Terror of the Situation
This suggests a radical, and terrifying, view of contemporary history: that the population explosion, famines, plagues, wars and massacres might not be due just to accidental or sociological and political causes but may be induced by the needs of the solar "eco-system" as a whole, with human beings acting for the most part unwittingly to effectuate these needs.
Think about all the horror and insanity that has gone done in the twentieth century, even just in terms of cold numbers: millions killed in World War One, hundreds of thousands wiped out in seconds at Hiroshima and Nagasake alone, millions massacred one way or another in the Nazi concentration camps; supposedly as many as twenty million Russians dying in combat in World War Two, not to mention another twenty million who died in the same period as a result of Stalinist persecution and forced famine. Millions died in the Chinese civil war, six or seven million in Cambodia under Pol Pot. Don't even bother counting all the famines in Africa and South East Asia over the last few decades.
Why the incredible surge of violent death all over the world, paralleled by an equally incredible population explosion? What is up with those peculiar humanoid beings living on the surface of Sol-III?
I'm not going to try to argue the merits of this scheme against other theories. Just chew on it for a while and see how it fits.
And so the picture painted is one of a race of hapless, deluded slaves to some kind of a cosmic food-chain the existence of which we don't even recognise. This is definitely insulting to all our best images of ourselves. But then how do we reconcile all our great assets, our supposed free will, intelligence, and creativity with the dismal facts of what we've done to each other for all of recorded history?
Are we really anything more than automatons most of the time?
Gurdjieff had what might seem to many a horribly bleak, cynical view:
that our ideas of free-will and individuality are a delusion, an image of our potential mistaken for a general fact of our existence. Bluntly put, we are blind products of genetics, conditioning and external influence; on an energetic level, we are next to nothing. We are less, in that sense, than most mammals even.
We have become experts at consuming energy and resources, parasites.
As a civilisation, we no longer transform energy into higher gradients and radiate it back out to the world, we just circulate like little ants in our vast urban hives and manufacture stuff, endless quantities of stuff. We know how to suck energy, make objects, and how to kill. Even if we're not killing each other off at a given moment, we're decimating untold numbers of living beings without even being grateful for their existence.
Sure, for the most part we don't feel ourselves that way, but anybody who's tripped a few times in public places probably had disturbing glimpses--at least--along these lines. We don't see other people--or ourselves--that way, because it's just too hard a vision to live with.
The path of return
This perspective provides a definite way of understanding the connection between our amazingly fucked up global situation and "spirituality"--or the lack thereof. Seen this way, spirituality has less to do with living according to some moral doctrine, or accumulating "spiritual" experiences and states, than with being able to transform and radiate energy of a particular quality.
If it is true that we have been suffering a generalised decline over millennia, all our human institutions must participate in and reflect that decline. So everything we associate with religion, in all its multifarious forms, would generally be a product and mirror of a messed up situation; in other words, just another part of the problem.
At its best, the spiritual component of religious traditions points to a return to what should be our natural base-line of being, something so distant we can barely remember or taste it except at moments of "peak experience," or with the help of psychedelic drugs, or as a result of long, intensive discipline.
Our so-called "salvation" is really more a matter of somehow pulling ourselves back up out of a dysfunctional, disenabled, alienated state to something like a natural way of being--not transcendence or cosmic consciousness or union with God or whatever. We need to re-learn "how to be and to do."
According to Gurdjieff, the two key principles to following this "path of return," were intentional suffering and conscious labour. Through engaging in intentional sufferings and conscious labours we begin again to release the kinds of energies we were intended to give off.
Of course by today's standards, this sounds like a bummer of a philosophy. Isn't life just supposed to be full of fun and games? On the other hand, if we're realistic we know that there's always going to be pain, struggle, suffering in life. If there weren't where would the joy and pleasure and flow be? So maybe rather than seek to escape suffering, or just submit to it blindly, it might make sense to choose your form of suffering and make something out of it.
Intentional suffering. Again, if it's true that we exist in a chronic low-energy state, one of inertia and stasis, it makes sense that in order to get back to a point of being able to consciously transform energy we would need to somehow exercise an enormous effort just to break out of our passivity. "Only super-efforts count." If you're physically weak from illness, it usually takes an extra effort to get to the point of being able to exercise on a regular basis, to return to your previous level of strength. Or as they say, no pain no gain.
This can apply on a lot of levels other than just the physical. Pain can take the form of a kind of moral or spiritual suffering deriving from, say, breaking habits, or confronting bad traits in one's character, or doing exactly that which you least like to do. Suffering in the form of sacrifice is necessary to be there for others, to truly love.
Conscious labour assumes that most of the "work" we do, of whatever nature, is not really conscious to begin with. We are driven by culturally programmed priorities, survival, automatic emotional needs, obsession, neurosis, ego. To work consciously assumes that one must first have become aware of how unconscious one is most of the time, of how automatic most of how our thoughts, feelings, perceptions and actions really are.
To even get to this point itself requires a lot of intentional suffering, because what could make us suffer more than waking up to how we really don't "own" ourselves?
Forms of work
This general process is what people who study Gurdjieff's ideas and methods generally call "work-on-oneself," or just "self-work."
No doubt for many orthodox "Gurdjieffians," this path of return can only occur in the framework of decades of commitment to the "work," in the manner it has been passed down to them.
Much of Gurdjieff's practical teaching consisted of dancing and physical exercises used in combination with meditation and concentration techniques. Some of the dances Gurdjieff himself invented, many were direct copies of the ancient temple dances he found during his travels. (These dances are a closely held secret of existing Gurdjieff groups, and rarely if ever performed in public.)
Other important components of his method were the techniques of "self-observation" and "self-remembering," designed to bring "essence" back into balance with "personality."
What is little known to the world at large, and almost completely suppressed within existing Gurdjieff groups, is that Gurdjieff was interested in and worked with drugs. The references to "active substances" other than alcohol, opium and cocaine in his writings are rare, and even then oblique (he tried to set up a "chemical laboratory" in Russia at one point--for synthesising what?); it is known, but little discussed, that Gurdjieff administered certain substances to some of his students.
The monks of the legendary Sarmoun Brotherhood, whom Gurdjieff spent time with, themselves cultivated and used a psychoactive plant they referred to as the "Herb of Enlightenment." Curiously, Oscar Ichazo, founder of Arica, a 70s psycho-spiritual organisation that also incorporated psychedelics and movement-work, claimed to have accessed the Sarmounis as well.*
Furthermore, we know from Gurdjieff himself that he considered his students "guinea pigs," his groups a laboratory in which he was conducting certain undefined experiments.
According to J. G. Bennett, one of his major students and better interpreters, Gurdjieff experimented continuously with his ideas, techniques and overall approach. While Gurdjieff always talked about his system, it was never fixed in a way that most of his followers seem to believe and dogmatically transmit it to others.
If everything Gurdjieff did was a kind of living laboratory, how does anybody know what were really the goals and working hypotheses and what was just part of the experiment? What if he kept certain pieces of his puzzle secret, knowing perhaps they were too explosive to make public at the time?
The new trance dance
Here is a radically new take on Gurdjieff's philosophy and mission, one that has a direct bearing on our neo-psychedelic-rave subculture:
Is it possible that trance-dancing is one of the most basic forms of intentional suffering and conscious labour?
Is it possible that such dancing, performed by the right people in the right way with the right intentions, is capable of producing exactly that same energy Gurdjieff believed Mother Nature needs from us? Could it be that the use of psychedelics in conjunction with intensive dancing to certain specific rhythms, by a new breed of individuals, may be a way to fill our cosmic obligation without the life-long spiritual training otherwise required?
My intuition is that this is indeed the case--unlikely as it may seem to all the "old school" esotericists and spiritualists.
Perhaps, in fact, we are not really now at the point of being able to do this--being "youthful" as we are, and prone to all the naiveté and follies of youth. But this may be what a certain number of us are instinctively moving toward. Maybe this is just that mysterious something we cross over into as we're peaking and pulsing together on the dance-floor.
Think about tribal trance dances. What better description could you think of for endurance dancing to the point of fainting in the service of the gods than intentional suffering and conscious labour?
Under different names, tribal peoples seem to commonly believe that their dances are essential to the gods, a form of offering, sacrifice, or service. Something necessary to keep the balance, to keep the rain falling, to keep the sun coming up, to keep things moving. That's why they're sacred dances. And so maybe it's not just the form of the dance that's sacred, or even what the dancers experience, it's in what they do: the energy they collectively release.
Isn't it odd that just when most of the cultures that still do this are either being destroyed or forgetting their own traditions, just at that same moment a whole tribalistic, "neo-shamanic" dance craze develops among western youth?
Consider: How does someone behave who has a deep instinct, but in whom that instinct has been muffled by hundreds or thousands of years of habitual suppression and invalidation? Perhaps every now and then the instinct manifests itself in a crude, awkward outburst, only to be quickly silenced by the embarrassed ego and the lack of any proper name or place for it in surrounding society.
In some of Bennett's writings on this whole theme, there is a tendency to paint the "feeding the Moon" scenario in extremes: either one is energetically inert and useless; or else one sacrifices one's life to spiritual work and helps to make up for everyone else's lack.
But must it be such a dichotomy? Maybe that's how it tends to be nowadays, but maybe it wasn't always if people used to "be more" than they are today. Maybe once upon a time (and still in some remaining aboriginal cultures), you didn't have to be a spiritual athlete, a specialist (monk, shaman, priest/priestess, etc.), to return your two or three "cents" to Nature.
Maybe even now, everyone can return some energy, given the right circumstances and maybe the right "assisting factors" too.
And what about the effect of psycho-active substances? If there is anything we know about psychedelics for sure, it is that they act as catalysts. They temporarily shift our system's mode of functioning, our rate of vibration, and enable transformations that are otherwise difficult to achieve--again passing. But what if that transformation, in tandem with the right kind of dancing and mindset, is just enough to enable the release of some special energy?
Does it matter that much whether we're in that state all the time, or just that we have regular access to it and can use it to do what we need to do?
Sure, we have no tradition of sacred dance, and few ravers dance till they drop, few dance with conscious devotional feeling or intent. What we do have, or at least aspire to, is a basic attitude that sets the tone when we come together for our celebrations: Peace-Love-Unity-Respect. Not bad for a point of departure.
And yet, just how conscious do you have to be of your intent if your instinct IS your intent? Maybe as we get high and move together our intent resurfaces into consciousness, and for those few sweet timeless moments we actually DO it, . . . and then we drift back down into consensus reality where there is no name for it, and the veils gradually cover it all up and soon we once again think we were there for nothing more than a good time and some cool music.
But the taste and scent of that ineffable "juice" still lingers, and it keeps us going in the days ahead, going back to more parties, wearing the clothes we associate with it, compulsively getting high and listening to mix tapes round the clock, searching for that rare synchronicity of time, place, people and music where it might magically happen again.
In some of his late writings, Bennett speculated that recent decades are seeing the birth of a new kind of person, maybe even a new race of sorts, with spiritual capacities different from the rest of society.
Could that be us?
And just what is that "juice," that energy, that special nutrient so needed for all things to live and grow in harmony? That erotic radiant mix of thankfulness, joy, and compassion that just wants to fuck the entire cosmos? Could it be . . . L-O-V-E?
OK, admittedly there are a lot of big ifs here. To try to prove that
a) human beings do give off energy when they die;
b) that some can give off an equivalent kind of energy intentionally while still alive;
c) that most of us don't or can't do this anymore;
d) that people could once upon a time do it better;
e) that the planet or the moon or the solar system requires this energy;
f) that if they don't get it human birth and death will automatically be increased with no say on our side;
g) that this energy can be produced through trance dancing among tribal peoples; and
h) that this energy can also be produced by teenagers dancing at parties with the help of drugs. . .
To try to prove, or even argue, all of that would be at least another article in itself. . . or more realistically, the basis for a life-time of research.

TEACHING TOURISTS THE REAL HAWAI`I
New York Times - February 4, 2020

Locals in O`ahu know that the best way to get from Waikiki’s crowded beaches to the cool North Shore is to drive along the island’s eastern coast. The road is framed by mountains, ocean and greenery so lush and beautiful, it’s hard to focus the eye on one place for too long, for fear of missing the next scenic attraction.
On a recent trip along the route, something else stood out: the upside down Hawaiian flags flying at almost every stop.
The flag, which has the union jack in the bottom left corner, instead of the usual top left, hung in storefronts in Waikiki and was printed on T-shirts in Waimanalo, it was stuck on the bumpers of passing cars in Kailua and flying from the backs of trucks in Kahuku and other towns on the North Shore.
The flag has become a symbol of solidarity among Hawaiians who oppose the construction of a large new telescope on Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawai`i. Mauna Kea, at 32,000 feet from seafloor to summit, and with 13,796 feet above sea level, is one of the best places in the northern hemisphere, if not the world, to observe the cosmos, experts say. The telescope’s proponents say that it will bring hundreds of jobs to the island and advance humanity’s study of space.
But it has faced fierce resistance from some native Hawaiians for whom Mauna Kea is sacred ground and a place of roots, and their allies. Opponents of the telescope say they are tired of having their land taken for purposes that benefit others and for the often elusive promise of jobs that fail to deliver in terms of numbers or a living wage.

“The struggle at Mauna Kea right now is one of the biggest issues that has realigned many cultural political relationships in Hawai`i,” said Kyle Kajihiro, an activist and lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “It’s really quite an amazing emergence of Hawaiian activism of cultural awareness.”
The battle over the telescope has revealed fissures that have long existed in Hawai`i, a place that is all but synonymous with tourism — the most-popular destination for honeymoons in the United States and a bucket-list perennial. The fight has inspired actions around the islands, all relating to how land is used and who benefits from it.
The spirit of protest is most visible in O`ahu, where in Kahuku demonstrators have spent the last several months fighting the construction of eight wind turbines, each standing at 568 feet — taller than the tallest skyscraper in Honolulu. Protesters say the turbines will have adverse long term health effects on the population. The company building them says there is no evidence to support those claims and promises to bring jobs to the area. More than 160 people have been arrested there.
In southeast O`ahu, in September, 28 people were arrested trying to block the building of a park and recreation center in Waimanalo, a largely agricultural town. The developers behind the center say it will bring jobs and create a new community space, but opponents fear it will be a magnet for tourists and will destroy the forest and beach used by locals.
In Honolulu, in May, Hilton employees protested, demanding a better contract and job protections. In July, hotel employees went on strike to protest what they said were low wages and the firing of 45 workers by Diamond Resorts, an operator of multiple properties in the United States and Europe. The company said it would turn one of its hotels into a timeshare resort, which requires fewer workers than a traditional hotel.
“We value our dedicated team members at The Modern Honolulu and we were pleased to reach a contract agreement that includes a significant pay increase,” a spokesman for Diamond said. “We are continuing our planned efforts to convert the property into a world-class vacation ownership resort.”
Most people in Hawai`i, especially in the tourism industry work more than one job to barely get by, said Bryant de Venecia, communications organizer for the workers’ union, Unite Here Local 5, which represents resort workers.
“Mauna Kea has lit a fire for Hawaiians who are tired of watching their land, resources and work be used at the expense of their well-being,” he said.
Hawai`i is the most expensive state to live in, according to the 2018 Annual Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research. Groceries, for example, cost more than 60 percent the national average.
“People are tired of being decorative — Hawaiians as well as people who live in Hawai`i,” said Maile Meyer, who owns Nā Mea Hawai’i, a bookstore in Honolulu that sells products from smaller local makers. “You’re seeing a phenomenon of natives gathering again and completely finding our way back to each other as part of the solution.

Jobs Aren’t Enough
A common thread between these protests is that they are being led by locals. They say that since Europeans first arrived in the 18th century, Hawaiian land has been taken and misused by non-Hawaiians, and often to the detriment of Hawaiians and their traditions. The endeavors that have sparked these recent protests all promise jobs, just as tourism and defense have in the past.
But perhaps for the first time in recent Hawaiian history, natives and locals are saying the quality of these jobs is not good enough.
“We’re having to move away from quantity to quality,” said Laurien Baird Hokuli`i Helfrich-Nuss, the founder of Conscious Concepts, a company that works with local organizations on sustainable tourism initiatives. “Now that local people are getting more agency, they are learning more, going into a more curious space of saying ‘It’s great that this company is providing jobs, but what kind of jobs are they? Are they good jobs? Are they paying a livable wage?”
Tourism is the biggest driver of Hawai`i’s economy, accounting for 21 percent of jobs. Nearly 10 million people visited the state in 2018 and in 2019, guest arrivals were expected to surpass that number, hitting a record high. And although more people are visiting Hawai`i, they are spending less there.
Locals say that resorts are often owned and run by non-Hawaiians, with Hawaiian people employed in the lower-paying service jobs, and that development often benefits outsiders at the expense of native and local well-being.
“There historically hasn’t been enough consideration for how tourism and tourists can contribute to making life sustainable and really livable for the locals who serve them here,” Mr. de Venecia said.
More Than A “Play Land”
The feeling of escape — of fleeing to a nearby paradise with stunning beaches and luxurious resorts — has long been Hawai`i’s appeal to the traveling public. While the hottest trends in travel now are the search for authenticity and ways to experience local life, many people who visit Hawaii are looking to get away from daily life. They come to sit on the beach and drink a matai without thinking about much else. Their interaction with local culture is often limited to watching a hula show at the hotel luau.
“We realized a lot of folks who would visit us who would normally have more consciousness about history and social justice concerns seem to turn off that part of their brain when they think about Hawai`i,” Mr. Kajihiro, the activist and lecturer, said, adding that people treat the islands as a “play land.”
But this decision to turn off their brains is hurting Hawai`i and Hawaiians, he said. While working for the American Friends Service Committee, the Quaker peace and justice organization, Mr. Kajihiro and his colleague Terrilee Keko`olani studied the environmental and social effects of colonization, militarization and overdevelopment of Hawai`i. They learned that tourism was one of the industries with some of the most damaging effects on O`ahu, he said, citing overcrowding, a higher cost of living and higher prices for goods.
The pair began offering alternative tours of the island, which they call DeTours, in 2004 and have seen increased interest in recent years. Their work was included in the recently published Duke University Press book “DeTours: A Decolonial Guide to Hawai`i,” a collection of essays, interviews and family histories about ethical and contextualized tourism in the islands.
The tours are given to groups of people who want to learn about Hawai`i from the perspective of local Hawaiians. They include a deep history on the ways military life is hidden across the island. During a typical tour, guests go to `Iolani Palace, the Hawaiian royal residence, then to Chinatown and some of the old neighborhoods where new immigrants to Hawai`i traditionally settled. The next stop is usually Fort Shafter, the headquarters of the United States Army Pacific; then Camp Smith, but the main part of the tour is Ke Awalau o Pu`uloa — Pearl Harbor.Continue reading the main sto
During a DeTours of Pearl Harbor, Mr. Kajihiro pauses in the “Oa`hu court” between the Pearl Harbor galleries and the museum and asks guests to look at the placards in the hallway. At the placard that says, “The Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown in 1893,” he explains that this one sentence has been controversial with the United States government because it acknowledges the government-backed overthrow of Queen Lili`uokolani, which unsettles American claims to Hawai`i. In the museum’s Attack Gallery, Mr. Kajihiro points to a small image of the Hono`uli`uli internment camp where Japanese people were held during World War II and uses it as a jumping-off point for a conversation about immigration and civil rights.
“People already come here with so many images and ideas about what Hawai`i is that it’s really hard for them to see something different, so that’s why we started calling our work ‘DeTours,” Mr. Kajihiro said. “To swerve off the path that most people are going to see or understand and consume and shake it up by raising some more critical perspectives and introducing a lot of historical facts that are not so pleasant.”
New Type Of Tourism
The DeTours team is part of a movement looking to change what tourism means in Hawai`i. Ms. Nuss, of Conscious Concepts, is originally from O`ahu and returned in 2009 after working in hospitality in the Caribbean, New York, Miami and other places on the United States mainland.
“I came home seeing something happening in Hawai`i that I didn’t see when I left,” she said. “My generation was stepping into their leadership roles and doing it differently, reconnecting for a movement back to the land.”
But she quickly realized that what many companies were doing didn’t align with her vision for supporting tourism while ensuring the well-being of overworked Hawaiians.
In 2015, Ms. Nuss created her company to find ways to support Hawaiian businesses function sustainably while also remaining a key part of the most important sector in O`ahu — tourism. Ms. Nuss has worked with farms, artists and nonprofit organizations to change their offerings so they can appeal to tourists, while still benefiting Hawaiians. A farm hoping to attract tourists to volunteer might turn to her to figure out the best ways to reach them. She described her work with as “consciously creating experiences for travelers and opportunities for locals.”
“I had a realization about how our tourism industry is presently run, which is coming from the commodification of culture,” she said. “I realized what was happening in my communities and the value systems that were driving it were contradictory to the form of tourism that I was being a part of.
”Continue reading the main stTo give tourists a more authentic experience of “the real Hawai`i,” the artists Roxy and Matt Ortiz, invite them into their studio in the Kaka`ako district of Honolulu. The couple is known for their elaborate murals of fanciful tree houses, which they create under the name Wooden Wave.
“When people come see us work, it gives them a totally different way to experience Hawai`i,” Ms. Ortiz said. “And it’s a fun way for us to give tourists a different experience than they usually see in those brochures.”
In these studio visits, guests can see the couple’s work in progress, but also learn about ahupua`a, the ancient system of land division, in which the island was separated into slices, each slice running from the top of the local mountain to the shore. During the visit, Mr. Ortiz explains that each ahupua’a included forest area up high and a cultivated area below, and depending on the politics and economy of each ahupua`a, its size was different from another.
Mr. Ortiz said that even the slightest opportunity for tourists to think about how water and land have always worked together and why they hold importance to Hawaiians can encourage them to be more thoughtful when interacting with locals and the land and sea while visiting.
“When people have some of the history and context they can appreciate the art more and they can experience the island in a more meaningful way,” he said.

Another way tourists can learn about the land and engage with locals is by visiting a local farm like Kahumana Farm in Waianae on the west side of O`ahu.Continue reading the main stor
In November, Chloe Anderson, a therapist and teacher in California, visited the farm and stayed for four of her six days on O`ahu. There she shared a room with others, did yoga, learned about the produce grown and cooked on the farm and generally felt like she got a more meaningful experience than she would have at a luxury resort, removed from daily Hawaiian life.
“We had like three or four different activities we would do every day,” she said. “But so many things were based off the farm and at the farm. We still had the experience of being a tourist in Hawai`i and going on hikes and beach excursions, but also of experiencing something more.”
Some business owners are committed to staying in the tourism sector, and are trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

“I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect that people just won’t work in the main industry there is and I don’t think Hawaiians want to stop tourism altogether, but we are all working to find ways of doing it responsibly and thoughtfully,” said Shane Hiroshi Gibler, who co-owns Royal Hawaiian Catamaran, which is based in Honolulu and offers snorkel tours, sunset cruises and private charters.
On Mr. Gibler’s boat, guests are asked not to bring any plastic and recycling is available aboard. Mr. Gibler educates guests an education about fishing, food and the importance of the ocean and the land to Hawaiians. The Royal Catamaran team regularly gathers people to clean up the shoreline and has been working with the Surfrider Foundation to remove ghost nets — fishing nets that have been lost or left behind by fishing boats — from reefs or the ocean.
The idea, one echoed by Mr. Kajihiro, is to encourage tourists to think about how they can leave their resort, even for one day of their trip, and contribute to the place they are visiting.ontinue reading the main stor
“The point is to make folks more responsible when they come here and to interrogate this notion that Hawai`i is somehow a place for them,” Mr. Kajihiro said. “If you are thinking about coming here, ask yourself: Who are you in relation to this place? Are you bringing something that will be of value to the host, the people who live here? What will be your impact and your legacy be?”

FORTUNATELY THAT WAS THE TIME I USED TO BE SEEN AT PHYSICALLY . LITERALLY HE TAUGHT ME HOW TO BIRTH THE DEITY AND FROM THAT DAY THE NITHYANANDA SACRED ARTS UNIVERCITY STARTED. BUT WE HAVE STARTED ORGANISING OURSELVES IN MAYBE 2002. I STILL REMEMBER, TIRUCHI SWAMIGAL ONE OF THE GREATEST INFLUENCE IN MY LIFE, IN BENGALURU HE HAS AN ASHRAM KAILASA ASHRAM. HE BUILT A HUGE RAJARAJESHWARI TEMPLE AND MANY TEMPLE LAL OVER. *WHEN I HAD THE GREAT FORTUNE OF SITTING AT HIS FEET AND HAVING THE TRAINING..I HAVE SEEN HIM VADAM KAAYAVIKKIRATHU - DRAWING WITH CHARCOAL ON FLOOR SITTING WITH STHAPATIS OR WITH PEN. *USUALLY WHEN HE SITS ON THE FLOOR, HE WILL SIT WITH THE STHAPATIS ON THE FLOOR WHICH IS VERY RARE. HE SAID IN SINGULAR, ‘AYE SEE!YOU HAVE TO BUILD A LOT!” OF COURSE I WILL TAKE A BLESSING. HIS VAK SIDDHI. THE WORD HE UTTERED IS MANIFESTING THROUGH ME. ARUNAGIRI YOGISHWARA INITIAED ME INTO THE SCIENCE OF BIRTHING DEITIES AND KAILASA ASHRAM INSPIRES ME, EDUCATED ME, EVOLVED ME WITH MORE AND MORE OF PRESENTING THE CULTURE. *HE IS AN EXPERT, ADEPT IN TEMPLE SCIENCE AND TEMPLE BASED LIFESTYLE *IN TAMILNADU, THERE IS A SMALL COMMUNITY NATTUKOTTAI NAGARATHAR. (via "Medically Futile Care" As Ritual. I Fucking Knew It. And People Are Okay With This?)
I’ve been researching so-called “medically futile care” lately, or more accurately, it’s a rabbit hole I fell down while researching nursing and what nurses have to say about witnessing and participating in medically futile care, otherwise known as medicalized torture. My own mother is a nurse and I know that she, after being a nurse for some 30 years, started to become disillusioned by Western medicine and the horrific procedures and treatments imposed on intractably and/or terminally ill and actively dying patients. Of course, she didn’t start having a problem with it until after she had reaped the social and material rewards of being a disgusting handmaiden and middle class patriarchal enforcer for her entire adult life including subjecting her own children to medicalized torture: my own brother died from it and earlier this year she brutally criticised me for abandoning Western medicine after 2 years of conventional Crohn’s treatments that were not helping and only making me worse. With a Western medical nurse as a mother who needs a firing squad (or torturer) amirite?

I have written here before about disillusioned Western medical doctors resisting their evil profession by leaving the field, including leaving via suicide. Apparently there is currently a movement headed by Western medical doctors themselves to challenge abusive practices in their field including but not limited to hazing and domination rituals in medical school and medical residency; overwork, sleep deprivation and other conditions related to employment in the Western medical field; and cruel standards of care including those implicating medically futile care where doctors feel “forced” to literally torture sick, injured and otherwise vulnerable patients lest they lose their jobs or be sued for medical malpractice. Doctors are actually feeling sorry for themselves because their jobs as patriarchal enforcers and medical torturers makes them feel bad, and while anyone who has ever worked before knows what it’s like to be coerced for money (and survival) those who literally, physically harm and torture other people in order to maintain their own standards of living will garner no sympathy from me.
The same goes for Western medical nurses who my research indicates suffer greatly from vicarious trauma and professional burnout from “having” to witness torturous medically futile care in their professions. Examples of such care include flogging corpses which have no reasonable chance of being revived; continuing invasive so-called “life support” for those who are dead to the world and will probably never regain consciousness or if they do will be horrifically and permanently impaired; refusing to let extremely premature or terminally malformed or diseased infants die naturally, and so on. Get a real fucking job, no matter how low it pays, is my response to all medical professionals who have a problem with physically harming and torturing people…yet continue to do it anyway because some man somewhere tells them they have to lest they lose their jobs if they want to continue to fund their own middle- to upper middle-class lifestyles. Seriously fuck you a million times you poor, poor self-proclaimed victims of workplace abuse who continue to physically torture vulnerable people for money. You absolute monsters.
As a chronically ill person suffering from an incurable and progressive disease that is notoriously unresponsive to conventional care, I recognized awhile ago that for me to engage with Western medicine when it has nothing to offer me in terms of pain and symptom relief or a net increase in my quality of life (net meaning overall, or a positive rather than negative score in benefit-minus-risk) would be nothing more or less than an engagement with a patriarchal ritual, and one that as a radical feminist would give me no comfort. Because I see no objective or subjective value in participating in patriarchal rituals I have declined to use the doctors’ office as a confessional, to confess my sins of being a disabled female under capitalism and patriarchy to a patriarchal authority figure who can do absolutely nothing for me except to witness my confession and absolve me of the emotional burden of being sick in the first place, and medically noncompliant in the second. That is literally what Western medicine is to me now — a patriarchal ritual — and I reject that on its face as a female who is deliberately denigrated and harmed (not healed) by patriarchy and patriarchal rituals by design.
Well come to find out this business about Western medicine and medically futile care in particular being a patriarchal ritual has been described by other people and wasn’t just something I and other radical feminists have made up in our heads: researchers actually admit it’s true in a medical journal article entitled “Rituals, death and the moral practice of medical futility.” Of course, they frame the use of ritual in this context as a positive thing. Here is the abstract of that article:
“Medical futility is often defined as providing inappropriate treatments that will not improve disease prognosis, alleviate physiological symptoms, or prolong survival. This understanding of medical futility is problematic because it rests on the final outcomes of procedures that are narrow and medically defined. In this article, Walker’s “expressive-collaborative” model of morality is used to examine how certain critical care interventions that are considered futile actually have broader social functions surrounding death and dying. By examining cardiopulmonary resuscitation and life-sustaining intensive care measures as moral practices, we show how so-called futile interventions offer ritualistic benefit to patients, families, and health care providers, helping to facilitate the process of dying. This work offers a new perspective on the ethical debate concerning medical futility and provides a means to explore how the social value of treatments may be as important in determining futility as medical scientific criteria.”
Oh by all means, let’s remove the expectation that medical care provide positive “final outcomes” for the one being subjected to it — the patient. Because to ignore fail to extol the broader social function of torturing sick and dying people in a medicalized authoritative setting would be problematic, you see. Do you see what they did there? They are talking about social engineering and the effects on society at large of flogging corpses, equating zombification/maintaining a state of undead with “life support”, and spitting in the eye of natural law by refusing to allow congenitally unviable infants to not-survive infancy and so on. And while the abstract does not list or detail the alleged benefits, the writers believe the social engineering effects are positive. Sure, if the reader is one who benefits from collective trauma and trauma-based mind control among other things. The rest of us, I suppose, are just expected to adopt the perspective of our oppressors.
These medical researchers aren’t even hiding the fact that most if not all medically futile including end-of-life care is ritualistic and does not benefit the patient. They assert that it is not intended to and should not be intended to benefit the patient because why waste an opportunity for social engineering and propping up medical (patriarchal) authority by “facilitating the process of dying” as if natural law needs their help? This is megalomaniacal.
The shit icing on the cake may even be that these researchers used a woman feminist’s ethical framework in order to justify using patriarchal authority as social engineering in cases of intractable illness and injury, including at the end of life. They rely on Margaret Urban Walker’s Moral Understandings: A Feminist Study in Ethics, published in 1998 which is described here:
The central concept of Walker’s work is the development of the expressive-collaborative model of ethical discourse. The expressive-collaborative model is a participatory model that engages people of all different kinds in a deliberative process that develops shared morality for a community. She develops this model as an alternative to the theoretical-juridical model [which model is a top-down authoritative model that assumes a universal moral code applies and does not accept input from the community it asserts moral authority over.]
Of course, assuming Walker is actually a feminist, she is proposing an alternative to patriarchy and providing an entrance for women and feminists into ethical discussions surrounding social policy and practice that disproportionately negatively affect us.
But her work is not used here to challenge patriarchy, quite the opposite. These prick researchers appear to use Walker’s alternative feminist ethical framework to support the use of medicalized patriarchal torture as ritual and beneficial social engineering…why? Because men and Western medical doctors should be included in the creation of social policy and practice and to not include them would be unfair because they are part of the communities they serve? (Have we hit peak liberal feminism yet?) Because using the bodies of sick and dying people to literally send messages to other people is perfectly fine? You’ve got to be fucking kidding me, considering that men in general and Western medicine in particular, as a fundamental patriarchal institution, already wrote the whole show including the foreword, the afterword, and the credits — and have used women and women’s bodies as useful objects the whole time. The world is their stage, the rest of us only players, yet we mustn’t disallow men and patriarchal institutions their voice literal actual physical abuse because not only ethics, but because feminist ethics. Got it.
youtube
Did I mention that I was right about medically futile care being nothing but a patriarchal ritual that can only harm women because that’s what it’s intended to do? Yep. I absolutely did mention it and I will again. I have also discussed how sick women’s bodies are in fact used to send messages to other people, in the case of requiring women to accept harmful and misogynistic Western medical treatment in order to collect disability benefits, the message is comply or literally die. Of course, I also framed Western medical treatment of untreatable, incurable and progressive disease as medically futile care which for some people is probably controversial but hardly a stretch if you just think about it a little bit. Goddammit I hate being right all the time.

Final presentation and script
Charlotte –
Our brand story is, here at Gaia, we want you to feel like the true Earth Goddess you are. With our size inclusive, stylish and elegant designs made both ethically and sustainably. We aim for our loungewear to leave you looking great and feeling empowered. We are diving deep into clean production that is not only beneficial to you but for the earth as well.
Heather –
Sustainability- All of our fabrics, yarns, trimmings and finishings are either organic and sustainably sourced or are made from 100% post consumer recycled material. This means we never deplete our planets natural resources faster than we can produce them. Responsibility- Everybody who works at Gaia are insured a competitive wage and our places of work are regularly inspected to guarantee safe working conditions. Inclusivity- We want all women to feel comfortable and confident when they shop with us. Our sizing ranges from a UK size 4-24 with hopes to increase this in the future.
Narnia-
Although at GAIA we pride ourselves in our inclusivity we do find our main customer audience to be a woman between the ages of 25 to 40 years old who are at a middle-class economic level. Demographically, we at GAIA want our customers to be economically aware, professional women earning a sufficient wage of 30k a year and above, who while wanting comfort also seek fashionable and classy loungewear that can be dressed up and worn out as well as dressed down. The psychological makeup of our customer is an art lover who is fashion conscious, a discriminating buyer, university educated with occupational accomplishment and an economic activist. The habits of our customer include shopping, reading, walking, yoga, watching movies and spending time with family. In terms of their consumer habits, our customers enjoy shopping around once every month or two months at middle to high profile retail establishments, fashionable good quality products, consciously seeks out sustainable and economically friendly brands.
Narnia and Zhante-
For our brand we decided to call ourselves Gaia. Gaia was venerated as the goddess of earth or land in ancient Greece. We think the name clearly reflects our goals of being sustainable and inclusive- supporting women empowerment through the use of a goddess accompanied with our ‘all goddesses welcome’ tagline. The logo is formed with Amalfi coasts cursive text that projects a feminine tone overall. Partnered with that is the alchemical symbol for the earth element, which further helps us to be identified as a sustainable brand. Both elements are identifiable to our brand and can be separated and used as standalone logos across our collection and promotional front. We decided to keep the colour palette quite simple as the black and white creates a more refined, elegant and professional look as it reflects our target audience of professional women aged 25-40 and we also want our collection to speak for itself.
Charlotte -
Our trend is a combination of the colour palette from the spring summer 22 euphoric and the concept of home comforts from spring summer 22 connected, both from WGSN. The concept of home comforts is based around comfy, loungewear home styles lasting long after lockdown. Loungewear isn’t just about comfort anymore it also needs to look into wellbeing with health being a consumer priority. Home comforts is relevant for loungewear and sets with cocooning adaptable silhouettes and adjustable features including elasticated closures and button-down finishes. The recommended materials for home comforts are organic fabrics including hemp, linen and cotton with hypoallergenic, rejuvenating and deodorising benefits. We have taken away aspects of home comforts for our brand including the loungewear home styles, organic materials and adaptable and adjustable silhouettes with elasticated features and tie-waist closures. With a future plan to look into smart fabrics.
Molly (me) -
The reason why we decided not to keep the home comforts colour palette is because we wanted something bolder and brighter. We went with the forecasted trend euphoric and the colour palette is inspired by the trend board colour me happy.
The colour palette consists of lavender Silk, Fresh Ginger, Nectar, Daylight Blue, Turquoise Tonic, Orchard Flower and Red Glow.
Charlotte -
The first loungewear collection for Gaia consists of three outfits designed for release in the spring of 2022. We’d like to consider ourselves as an inclusive brand to all and offer all of our products in sizes XXS to 4XL. The first outfit in our range is a plunge V neck sleeveless full-length dress, with an elasticated ruffled waist. The dress is paired with a collarless full length quilted coat with wide sleeves, complete with a long sash belt. The second outfit consists of three items including elasticated paper bag style lounge pants, a sleeveless tank in the same style as the dress, these are paired with a quilted wide sleeved crop jacket with a tie waste. The third outfit is a pair of elasticated paper bag shorts with a cropped square neck t-shirt with ruffled sleeve detailing matching that of the bottoms and dress. All of the outerwear and bottoms from this collection have seam pockets and there is a paper bag style detail running across all three looks of the collection.
Lisa -
Looking at the garments we create, we plan to use recycled polyester and organic cotton. Which would be coloured through a natural dye process and use of sublimation for the polyester fibres which wouldn’t be as harmful or wasteful. And with the jackets and coat we would use cotton batting.
Heather –
Our first clothing line is priced from £47 - £428. Being a sustainable and ethically inspired brand it is expected that our products may cost more than less ethical companies on the market. As an example we pay all of our employees an average wage of £12 an hour including everyone involved with the production of our garments. Compared to one of our main ethical competitors girlfriend collective, who pay the living wage for seamstresses in Vietnam, our employees earn over 10x the amount they do. We believe that this will not deter our customer base as they care far more about the impact they have than how much things cost. Our pricing is based on a direct to customer market. We hope to operate a circular economy in the future so at this time we are not taking on wholesale options to keep things simple.
Molly (me) -
Our clothing will be predominately sold online and you can purchase the items through our website or through our Instagram shop. We decided to open an Instagram shop as well as just our website because Instagram is a massive social media platform where we can gain a large following, we will also be able to reach a bigger target market of customers. One other reason why we wanted to promote and sell through Instagram is due to the current pandemic, as more and more people are now shopping online and turning to Instagram to pass the time so we hope our brand reaches a wider range of customers through our posts and advertisements. we also plan to set up a pop-up shop in the bull ring in Birmingham city Centre, where we will also sell our products.
Pranil –
As for our pop-up store, we had scouted out a location that we had deemed perfect for our brand, and we had found an open and well-lit store for hire in the heart of the Birmingham, within the Bullring. This store is ideal for our brand as the Bullring is a highly populated area, and we feel customers going in and out the building will be inclined to help local businesses in the area, and our demographic will surely be around the building. The price for this renting out this store totals out to £132/day and we all agreed that having the store up for a month would be enough time for people to notice us, which come to final cost of £5,160, for 31 days.
Zhante –
Looking at the ways in which we can get Gaia as brand out there and create a sense of validity around us, we will be using such means as reaching out to sustainable fashion bloggers like the sustainable edit and magazines such as KeiSei and more commercial magazines like vogue for featured interviews so our consumers can get to know Gaia as a brand better and to answer any unanswered questions as well as write and review our products spreading our message across a wider audience. We will also be looking at future collaborations with other sustainable brands which support our ideals, such as girlfriend collective as an example to help gain international recognition. We will also be hiring out billboard spots across the UK to visually promote our collection and to create further interest eventually moving this worldwide. In addition to this, we will also be working with the fashion of nature exhibition to display our collection within a live event as well as taking part in the first ever sustainable fashion week, sporting our collection on the runway later this year in autumn 2021. In the near future we will be looking into partnering with campaigns and charities surrounding the idea of sustainability and slow fashion and hopefully create our own campaigns and produce panel talks that support and help spread our message even further.

In the near future we will be looking into partnering with campaigns and charities surrounding the idea of sustainability and slow fashion and hopefully create our own campaigns and produce panel talks that support and help spread our message even further.
^ Narnia – As Instagram is a big platform to promote brands and is the easiest way to garner attention, we will be reaching out to Instagrammers, sending PR so they can review and promote our collection through Instagram stories and reels to their audience which will create more traffic to both our website and Instagram page. Through this we can then run giveaways and competitions. And as Gaia gains more and more attention we will be looking into eventually expanding our group of influencers which can eventually lead us into celebrity brand endorsements and possible collaborations.
^ Zhante – We tried to be as thoughtful about the materials we use for our packaging as we are with our collection and are constantly looking for innovative ways to minimise the use of single-use packaging. We recognise that single-use packaging exerts an impact on ecosystems at their extraction point, during production and in disposal. Therefore, we have worked with companies like TIPA and Iggesund who are manufacturers known for their bio based, fully compostable, flexible and sustainable packaging solutions to create the perfect blend. Our BPI certified packaging is 100% sustainable, 100% eco-friendly and is 100% good for the planet; made from a selection of paperboard box packaging which can either be recycled or composted. Our garments will be protected and wrapped in clear TIPA plastic made from vegetables, which is designed to breakdown into compost, replacing the overuse of industrial cast film packaging. This is great as it allows us to be consistent with our sustainability without compromising on the aesthetics. Our thank you notes that will be inside every packaged delivery will be made from 100% recycled and plantable flower seed paper as well as our tags for both our bags and clothing. The bags will then be a combination of sustainable paperboard and again coated with a plastic film wrap-created using things such as cellulose and compostable gloss. And our Gift cards will be plastic free and made from a similar material called invercote paperboard.
We have consciously decided not to include any unnecessary extras within the packaging such as tissue paper as we believe this will just create more unnecessary waste and recycling in the long run.
We recognise that this is a more costly approach than typical packaging and would likely have to bump up the delivery prices to help compensate for this, but we believe that the cost of this is cheaper than the cost of damaging the planet.
^ Lisa – After establishing our brand, in the short midterm we plan to open a physical store including the expansion of our range for a more inclusive collection through sizing which we plan to use CLO3D technology which would allow us to reduce the waste in pattern making and thus being more sustainable. In the long-term we aim to use self-healing fabric as it would reduce the damage on the garment and less waste as well as encouraging customers to return the clothing that we would then recycle into new clothing so that this creates a more circular ecosystem.
^ Heather - Thank you for listening. Are there any questions?

Glimpses from Nithya Satsang with HDH Nithyananda Paramashivam 18 July 2020 18 JULY 2020 - 7.39 PM, GIST OF PARAMASHIVA GANA / PARAMASHIVOHAM SEASON 8 AND INITIATED DISCIPLES’ SESSION 1. *PARAMASHIVA’S MESSAGE DIRECTLY FROM KAILASA *TODAY WE ARE OFFICIALLY LAUNCHING THE SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES OF THE ORGANISATIONS: SAFFRON OM, RED OM, BLUE OM, GREEN OM, WHITE OM, YELLOW OM. *WE ARE OFFICIALLY FORMING THE ORGANISATIONS ONLY NOW BUT FOR MANY YEARS, FROM THE BEGINNING, WE WERE DOING THESE: *AT THE AGE OF THREE, I WAS RECOGNISED BY THE TEAM OF ENLIGHTENED BEINGS AS AN INCARNATION AND TRAINED IN VARIOUS YOGIC SCIENCES OF HINDUISM AND YOGA AND HINDU SCRIPTURES. *AT THE AGE OF 10, PARAMASHIVA HIMSELF CAME AS ARUNAGIRI YOGISHWARA AND GUIDE, INITIATED, BLESSED, STARTED MANIFESTING HIS ENERGY THROUGH THIS BEING. *AFTER THAT THE ACHARYA ABHISHEKAM WAS PERFORMED BY THE 230TH GURU MAHASANNIDANAM OF THONDAIMANDALA AADHEENAM. *THEN THE ENLIGHTENED BEINGS OF TIRUVANNAMALAI PERFORMED THE YOGA PATTABHISHEKAM IN 1994 AND DECLARED ME AS THE 1008TH SUCCESSOR. TI SI A FORTUNATE COINCIDENCE FROM PARAMASHIVA HIMSELF - THE LINEAGE OF LIVING STREAM OF ENLIGHTENED MASTERS. *YOGA PATTABHISHEKAM WAS DONE FORMALLY AND THEY HANDED OVER THE TRADITION FOR ME TO CARRY ON FROM THEN ON STARTED THE REVIVAL OF KAILASA. IT IS ALMOST 26 YEARS. *THE DAY I STARTED CARVING THE DEITY AFTER HAVING VISION OF DEVI DARSHAN, BIRTHING OF DEVI IN THE FORM OF DEITY WHEN I STARTED, THAT DAY THE SACRED UNIVERSITY STARTED. USUALLY DISCIPLES WILL BE SENT OUT. WE WERE ALL SITTING. THE MOMENT HE SAID GET THE CHARCOAL ALL WALKED OUT AND I ALSO WALKED OUT. BUT HE PERSONALLY CALLED ME AND ASKED ME TO SIT. HE USED TO TREAT THE STHAPATI LIKE HIS OWN SON BECAUSE HE KNOWS HIM FROM WHEN HE WAS A KID. *HE STARTED DRAWING TO TELL HOW DEITIES EYES EARS ALL SHOULD COME. I WAS WONDERING WHY HE ASKED ME TO SIT. THEIR WHOLE LIFE IS TEMPLE BASED LIFESTYLE. *WHOLE ASHRAM OF TIRUCHI SWAMI IS FROM THAT NATTUKOTTAI NAGARATHAR CULTURE. SO BEAUTIFULLY HE WILL RUN EVERYTHING. I USED TO WONDER ABOUT THE METICULOUSNESS WHICH IS AM STILL STRUGGLING TO BRING IN KAILASA. EACH OBJECT WILL BE KEPT ONLY IN ITS PLACE *AND THE WAY THE TEMPLE IS RUN - EXTREME SINCERITY! ARUNAGIRI YOGISHWARA INITIATED, INSPIRED AND IN 2002, IT STARTED EVOLVING AS A UNIV. I USED TO PERSONALLY GO TO MAHABALIPURAM AND FIRST STARTED WITH LOS ANGELES VENKATESHWARA. I WANTED TO START WITH GANAPATI. SO SMALL GANAPATI AND THEN LOS ANGELES VENKATESHWARA THEN NITHYANANDESHWARA PARAMASHIVA IN OHIO AND THEN THE UNIVERCITY EVOLVED. EACH OF THE WORK, WE ARE NOW MAKING IT AS AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION WHEN I STARTED GOING HOUSE TO HOUSE AND COLLECTED DONATION AND CONDUCTED VARIOUS PROGRAM AND DISTRIBUTED PRASAD TO EVERY HOUSE AND READ THE ACCOUNTS TO ALL MY TEAM -THE FIRST TEAMILY I FORMED, KAILASA IS BORN. NOW WE ARE ORGANISING OURSELVES AS INTERNATIONAL BODY AND NOW WE ARE EVOLVING INTO WORLD LARGEST HINDU UNIVERCITY AND WE ARE GOING TO EVOLVE MORE AND MORE SO THIS SAFFRON OM, DEDICATED TO WORLD PEACE CONFLICT RESOLUTION, RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. I AM OFFICIALLY LAUNCHING THE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM FOR THE SAFFRON OM NOW. IT IS ALREADY AVAILABLE. RED OM FOR ALL KINDS OF RELIEF WORK *GREEN OM FOR ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION *FUNDAMENTALLY WHATEVER WE WERE DOING EARLIER WE WILL EVOLVE IT MORE IN AN INTERNATIONALLY ORGANISED WAY BLUE OM - FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS WHITE OM - FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALING SPIRITUAL COUNSELING, HELPING HUMAN BEINGS MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, PSYCHOLOGICALLY YELLOW OM - REVIVING ALL THE SAT VIDYA YOGI AYURVEDIC SCIENCES ARTS CULTURE EVERYTHING RELATED TO HINDUISM SO FORMALLY, I AM INAUGURATING THESE ORGANISATIONS. AND WE ARE ALSO FORMING MORE THAN 100 NEW ORGANISATIONS THIS NEW ORGANIZATION ARE NOT BOUND BY ANY INDIVIDUAL COUNTRY'S LAW. IT IS INTERNATIONAL STANDARD. IT WILL BE JUST AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION! THERE IS A CLAUSE CALLED INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION WHICH IS BEYOND ANY COUNTRY’S LAW. IT IS A SEPARATE STANDALONE BODY LIKE INDEPENDENT NATION. SO THESE ARE EVOLVING UNDER THAT CLAUSE. LIKE HOW UNITED NATIONS IS INDEPENDENT OF ALL COUNTRY LAW , IN THAT WAY THESE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION ARE GETTING FORMED. *THERE ARE CERTAIN COUNTRIES THAT ALLOW THESE REGISTRATIONS AND PRE CONDITIONS TO BE FULFILLED. ALL THESE ARE PRACTICALLY DONE AND THAT'S THE WAY THESE ORGANIZATION ARE EVOLVING. ALL THE DETAILED GOOD NEWS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AFTER DECEMBER 14TH. *SO LET US ALL START ORGANISING OURSELVES UNDER THIS NAMES AND BODIES. *REVIVAL OF HINDUISM HAPPENING NOW. IT IS HAS BEEN THERE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. MEANING OF REVIVING. I AM NOT REFORMING I AM ONLY REVIVING. WHATEVER IS THERE IS IN SCRIPTURE, TRADITION I AM JUST REVIVING. AND MAKING IT USER FRIENDLY FOR EVERYONE IN THE MODERN WAY. *DEFINITION OF REVIVOR: REVIVOR IS THE PERSON WHO STANDS WITH RESPONSIBILITY, BOLDY, IF YOU WANT TO BE PART COME ALONG WITH ME . IF NOT I WILL DO IT ALONE. IF YOU OPPOSE, IN SPITE OF YOU, I WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. THIS COURAGE. RESPONSIBLE HARD WORK HAS NO REPLACEMENT. STILL NO REPLACEMENT IS FOUND ON PLANET FOR THIS HARD WORK. SINCERELY I WILL GO ON REVIEWING WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS…….LIKE AN AUTOMATIC REVIEWING MACHINE. THERE IS AUTOMATIC GOOGLE ALARM IN MY HEAD.EVERYDAY IT WILL JUST START. *SINCERE, INTENSE HARD WORK. LOTS OF ENERGY AND WILL PERSISTENCE IS REQUIRED. NO TIME TO ALLOW PANDEMIC FATIGUE. CONSCIOUS. BEFORE EVEN THEY ANNOUNCED CURFEW IN INDIA ON MARCH 22ND, THAT DAY ITSELF I CALLED THE AADHEENAVASIS, AND KAILAYAVASIS AND TOLD THEM,”THERE IS GOING TO BE 6 MONTH LOCKDOWN. THEY WERE SHOCKED. USUALLY PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE WHEN I SAY. I AM HABITUATED TO TALK WHATEVER I WANT EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE. I DON'T EXPECT BELIEF OR YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT I SAID IN YOUR EYES. I JUST GO ON TELLING WHAT I WANTED TO TELL. ONLY AFTER A FEW DAYS THEY UNDERSTAND. I TOLD THEM PLAN TO STORE FOOD. I TOLD THEM WHOLE NATION WILL BE SEALED. NOT ONLY IN INDIA, WORLDOVER. SO START STORING FOOD. I AM NOT SAYING WE WILL NOT GET FOOD. THE COST WILL INCREASE, QUALITY WILL REDUCE. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FEED ANNADHAAN. AFTER THAT ALSO THEY ANNOUNCED ONLY 21 DAY CURFEW. LISA RENEE – Time Shift Blog – Confusion Principle
Psychological manipulation through means of propaganda and information warfare was once limited within the scope of the Controller Pillars of Society, via countries, states, militaries, and intelligence agencies. Today, even everyday people have become important players in these media campaigns involving access to credible and high-quality information or straight out disinformation campaigns in this new media landscape. Aggressive battles over access to information and the shaping of narratives have become an integral part of shaping societal views and the public’s perception of the nature of reality, which includes current war agendas and global-economic politics. During the Ascension Cycle, the collective consciousness moves towards open source systems in which to gain more access to information, truth, and knowledge that which had been previously unseen and remained hidden from the ordinary citizens.
https://energeticsynthesis.com/resource-tools/blog-timeline-shift/3271-confusion-principle
The explosive terrain of the wild west in all forms of media has contributed to unprecedented levels of perpetrating psychological manipulation and information warfare that is associated to a variety of conspiracies, disinformation, mind control agendas and cyber hacks. Simultaneously, it has given a forum for those people who are truth activists, those dedicated to investigating the factual evidence and disseminating layers of the news in order to gain more truth about the larger picture and then share it with many others. When everyday people are willing to become investigative journalists on behalf of finding the truth, they blow past mainstream media border guards of the matrix. Those who have been marginalized and disadvantaged from getting their message out, are able to have a voice in the shifting paradigm. Thus, humanity benefits from the sense of personal emotional connection and human authenticity which is present in everyday people getting their message out and telling their stories. Many messages and stories that were previously completely ignored by mainstream media, such as child trafficking and pedophilia, are now being heard.
However, media saturation and the constant use of psychological manipulation tactics means we must use high-quality discernment, and be willing to use critical thinking when considering sources of information and their potential agendas. We live in a world run by manipulators, master manipulators who preconceive expert level mind control strategies that the common person would never think of in casual conversation. By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at another’s expense, these methods could be considered as exploitative, abusive, devious, and deceptive. And yet, we live in a controlled reality where this level of intentional manipulation to prevent access to valid, credible information is used every day to generate as much confusion as possible, in the minds of the public. Sun Tzu, a Chinese Military Strategist originally said the best victory in warfare is the one in which you never have to fight your enemy in actual combat, instead to subdue them through psychological warfare.
Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the behavior or perception of others through abusive, deceptive, or underhanded tactics, usually through the intentional spreading of disinformation and confusion via information warfare. Information warfare is a concept involving the agenda to achieve certain goals through the management of information and communication technology in pursuit of gaining the competitive advantage over an opponent. Information warfare may involve the collection of tactical information, along with the assurances that one’s own information is valid, in order to spread propaganda or disinformation to demoralize or manipulate the public or perceived enemy. The intent is to undermine the quality of accurate information available while denying access to information-collection opportunities to those who are in the disadvantaged position, for whatever the reasons. Information warfare is closely linked to psychological warfare, and these are two concepts are deeply enmeshed within the Controller agenda.
Thus, we should be made aware of the highly explosive environment of psychological manipulation and information warfare that we find ourselves today. It is important to understand the principles used to promote confusion in the minds of people and to know that this is the primary goal of psychological manipulation. When we are confused about being fed disinformation, we cannot make informed and well thought out decisions. When we have a built a foundation for our life based upon layers upon layers of deception, we are confused and do not perceive reality accurately. This destroys our ability to gain clarity and build inner strength for ourselves. When we are confused, we are weakened and at a disadvantage.
What is Confusion?
Confusion is the state of being bewildered or unclear in one’s mind about something, which leads to cognitive distortion. Cognitive distortions tend to interfere with the way a person perceives an event. Mental confusion is sometimes accompanied by disordered consciousness (the loss of linear thinking) and memory loss. States of mental confusion and cognitive distortion are increased dramatically when being overloaded by stress and when taking any kind of alcohol or drugs.
The most common way to confuse someone is to simply overload them with information, bureaucracy or demands that they cannot process and to which will lead them to feel utterly overwhelmed. In simple terms, its consistently throwing things at them until they collapse from the weight of it all, wearing them down until they cannot take it anymore. Sometimes it’s making demands or placing rules on the circumstances that actually do not make any sense at all, in order to confuse them further. Most people have been conditioned to accept that there are predictable patterns in the world in order to make sense of their environment, which gives the illusion of personal control, certainty, and safety. When that person’s predictable pattern breaks apart and they are set up in an unexpected shock or surprise, they feel they have lost control and this will generate mental confusion and uncertainty. How well we cope with stress and uncertainty, will help us learn from the experiences which can strengthen us for the next time it happens. This is why we emphasize maintaining present moment observer consciousness and neutrality, as this radically diffuses mental tensions while keeping you stronger in the face of confusing challenges.
From the Ascension Glossary:
Overwhelm and Wear Down: Constantly use greater strength in applying heavy forces that overwhelm your opponent by creating never-ending issues that are designed to wear him down and erode his willpower and resiliency. Bureaucracies, impossible compliance, insurance, tax and legal channels that keep people bogged down in never-ending paperwork, long lists, and cues under the threat of intimidation, or threat to financial security or persecution. This is also carried out in legal forms as ‘death by 1000 papercuts’, through the increase of overwhelming problems and burdensome bills. When people’s hopes are crushed and their expectations for their life are confused and burdened, eventually they become so drained they have no energy to refuse the constant attempts of subjugation and just give up.
Instilling confusion increases internal stress and it’s a way to destabilize the person so they will be easily manipulated to do what you want them to. Extreme confusion can put people into mental paralysis at such deep levels that they actually go into a trance-like state. This extreme method of instilling confusion is a means of hypnotic induction, whereas the person becomes extremely suggestible to external forces, and can be influenced greatly by subtle forces of subliminal mind control.
When a person feels overwhelmed by the increased pressure of stress, they will generally accept any solution available in that moment to reduce that stress. This is referring to a basic psychological warfare principle, Clutching at Straws. This means to put the person at such disadvantage that they will try anything you suggest in order to get out of a desperate situation, no matter how irrational or unlikely it is to succeed. Literally, it means a drowning person who, is unable to find any substantial flotation immediately at hand and attempts to save himself from certain death by grabbing hold of a few stray pieces of straw floating on the water within arm’s length.
We live in a world fraught with manipulation tactics. People that are controlling will always use manipulation tactics. Manipulation refers to making attempts at indirectly influencing or controlling someone else’s behavior or actions. As human beings, our negative emotions often cloud our discernment making it difficult to see the reality behind hidden agendas or motives in different forms of behavior. This is an important time to take care of ourselves and to note that this controlling and manipulating phenomena will increase in the environment due to the psychological and information warfare used to direct fear, insecurity, and confusion in the masses.
As we become aware of how psychological manipulation works to intentionally generate mental confusion, we are more equipped to handle these kinds of sophisticated manipulating behaviors that we are being exposed to. The dark forces take advantage of that vulnerability in people who have not made an effort to understand and clear their negative ego. When we make an effort to clear negative ego, we commit towards learning the greater truth about ourselves that shifts us out of confusion in order to develop personal clarity.
With a Loving heart, Lisa

280: The Importance of Daily and Weekly Rituals & Routines You Love (12 Ideas to Incorporate Now)
"You would think weightlessness is a good thing, but it's not. Because people weren't meant to float. Without gravity, we lose blood volume, bone density, muscle. Without it, we're untethered. So when you feel yourself being pulled toward something, it's not necessarily a bad thing. It may keep you centered. It may keep you safe." —Grey's Anatomy, season 16, episode #17, Shonda Rhimes
Thoughts, thoughts, all sorts of thoughts. With an abundance of time on our hands as we stay home, if we have not exercised our brains in this way, it may feel uncomfortable, and in these times we find ourselves collectively, understandably unsettling.
The above quote caught my attention this past week as it feels our attentions are being being pulled toward the necessities of life, what we sincerely need to simply live. Don't get me wrong, the past eleven years, economically, have been much needed and appreciated, and while each of our journey's is unique, perhaps we've forgotten what we truly need, what others truly need, to live well. At the moment, we are all being pulled to our homes, to our sanctuaries, to our immediate families with whom we reside with but perhaps never see often because of our busy schedules. Admittedly, some of our loved ones may be far away due to age, relationships, work, etc., but we at least have the phone, video chat and other technological ways of communicating.
Becoming grounded in what roots us, is what reminds us of what truly is a priority in our life, helps us to make better decisions to remain true to those values when the choices are vast. And sometimes when the choices are so vast and so ubiquitous for such a long time, we would only be being human to lose sight of our roots. I am not suggesting that we need to have a pandemic to root us, but that is where we find ourselves, so I am determined to see some good in this perilous situation.
There will be good that will come out of it when we come out of it on the other side, but as well, there is good we can partake in during this time of staying home.
Today, while I had originally planned a different topic for the episode to be shared, I have decided to focus on something that will hopefully be helpful to direct our attention to, to elevate the time we have indoors, wanted or unwanted. The gift and mood lifting power of daily and weekly rituals.
Under the umbrella of daily and weekly rituals lies our daily and weekly routines. Consciously creating routines in which we know boost the quality of our lives from our health, to our rest and rejuvenation to our productivity are ways to rest more easily which benefits our mind and well-being and decreases our stress. Each of these efforts strengths our immune system and ultimately strengthens our overall health, both physically and mentally.
Today I would like to share with you rituals you can incorporate into your daily and weekly routine even while you stay home.
1.Wake up well
Design a morning routine in which regardless of whether you are heading out the door (when our routines get back to normal) or staying home, you want to get out of bed and partake in. In episode #243 I share 12 Ways to Make Your Mornings Magical, Mindful and the Foundation of a Great Day.
2. Create a daily routine you love
As I shared with my students what would be expected of them while we stepped into our extended break (Oregon has announced they will be closing all schools through the entire month of March.), one student immediately decided she would find a favorite place she enjoyed being, give herself this window during her day to complete her schoolwork and then be done. I was so tickled to hear such thoughtful and conscientious attention to both her academics, but also her well-being by compartmentalizing and stepping away from work so she could relax and just be.
All of us, whether at home, and especially now that we are home, would benefit from creating a schedule in our day for productivity, but also meals, rest and exercise. Knowing we have accomplished something will let us rest more easily and make it easier to sleep at night. As well, we will be giving our bodies and mind a healthy balance to remain strong.
3. An afternoon brain break
Whether you enjoy an afternoon tea or an afternoon nap or an afternoon outside exercising, create a ritual that will be something you look forward to as you make your way through your day. If you are like me, and live alone, this may be a good time to call loved ones to check in. If you live with others, it may be a great time to be together if you are busy doing your own thing throughout the day. Either way, make a point of intentionally not doing work, but rather something relaxing and enjoyable. Something that elevates the everyday even more so that each day you look forward to such moments.
4. Welcome the flowers
I shared on Instagram yesterday (see below) how one of the items on my grocery list this weekend (I went early and wore gloves as well as washed my hands before and after) was to welcome a few bouquets of flowers into my home. Recent researched has shared that having fresh flowers can "lower blood pressure and heart rate, lower ratings of pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and more positive feelings and higher satisfaction [about one's home]". So while, we need to stay home as much as possible, if possible keeping in my sanitation requirements, welcome some flowers into your home and perhaps bring a bouquet for your neighbor and leave them on their doorstep with a note. You may help their health more than you realize.

5. What to listen to? What brings you joy.
Create a listening ritual that carries you through your day. From the classical music I wake up to on WRTI with host Gregg Whiteside and Breakfast with Bach at 5am to the jazz in the evenings from my Spotify playlist, as well as podcasts about food and France enjoyed while I walk the dogs along the river, around the neighborhood or through the trees, what we turn on melodically has a tremendously powerful effect over our well-being. Choose what you love and let it elevate your days.
Music I listen to:
WRTI - classical and jazz
KUSC - classical
TSLL playlists
Escape to France . . .
Luxurious Classical Music (more than 10 hours of music)
Everyday Jazz
French Cafe Jazz (no lyrics)
Jazzy Dinner playlist (Spotify)
Podcasts I have been loving recently:
The Land of Desire (French history and culture)
MilkStreet Radio
Inside Julia's Kitchen
The Splendid Table
6. Fitness Habits That Energize
The key to sustainable exercise routines is to keep them seemingly small, yet consistent and intentional. As I shared in the first episode of 2020 on the podcast, #272, 8 Ways Tiny Habits Will Welcome the Great Changes You Seek, tiny habits have a powerful way of instituting the change we desire. Why? Because they are more likely to stick, and truly become habituated into our daily routine.
From waking up and doing one set of sit-ups (by the end of the week you will have done five sets!), to meditating for one minute each morning, to sipping a glass of water upon waking up in the morning, when you choose thoughtfully the habits you want in your life, reduce them down to seemingly so small, there is no reason not do the task, and before you know it, as you see the positive change, you won't want to reduce your effort and may even want to increase it.
So as we find ourselves with more time at home and being unlikely to attend our favorite fitness class or gym, find exercise habits at home that will fulfill the exercise routine you need, but in a way that you enjoy. I am shifting my weekly yoga classes to a YouTube yoga instructor for the time being (but I cannot wait to return to the yoga studio), and my walks will be where I can keep my social distance at a healthy length from others, for their sake as well as mine.
7. Create an evening ritual for winding down before going to bed
Something I look forward to every day, weekday or weekend, is my evening routine. After the work on the blog has been completed, after dinner has been made and savored, it is this hour or two before I drift off to sleep that is priceless. My dogs as well have become accustomed to our routine and even though they do not know the time of day we humans live by, they know when bedtime is near.
From calming down the house, dishes washed, kitchen cleaned, work put away, to lighting a candle in the living room, turning on a pre-taped show or picking up a book or magazine I want to slip away to for a while, these simple activities tell my mind it is safe to rest, to relax, to be done for the day. All the while sipping some tea and nibbling on a piece of chocolate truffle, the ultimate signal to my body and brain that the day is done.
8. Be Conscientious About Your Daily News Intake
Going along with #5, what media we choose to be part of our daily routines has a profound effect on our mental health. I shared and encouraged my students to limit their news intake as it can easily overwhelm us. I did not suggest sticking their head in the sand and ignoring the news, but rather choose one or two times a day in which you check in with a credible news source, and then go about your day.
9. Work space set-up
Cultivate a welcoming work space whether it is temporary or where you work on a normal workday. Provide a clean work desk (check out this post - 10 Ways to Make Your Desk Space Efficient and Inspiring), welcome the natural light, reduce unhelpful distractions and decorate or rearrange in such a way to beckon you to work well.
10. Befriend water
Choose to bring and drink water with you throughout the day. Staying hydrated has oodles of benefits, but on the immunity side of things, it will help rid your body of toxins. Even if I am enjoying my regular cup of tea in the morning, afternoon or evening, I regularly will have a glass of water as well or have my Hydroflask full of water if I am out walking (it is in my car for when I return). Cultivating this habit will satiate your appetite, refresh your body and elevate many arenas of your life that we take for granted.

11. Turn your ideas into gold
Yes, William Shakespeare may have written King Lear during his quarantine tenure in the 16th century, and while we may not produce such masterpieces, we can use this time let our creative ideas run free so that we have time to see what they want to reveal. Keep a notebook or small journal handy and write down what pops into your mind. You may be able to tend to the idea now or it may be an idea you can implement later, but either way, it will be a positive exercise to focus on positive, hopeful, inspired things. Our mind is a muscle, and it finds the tracks we repeat again and again. So practice thinking in such a way that lifts you up, gets you excited and who knows where your creative thoughts will take you.
As for me, I am planning TSLL's upcoming British Week (the third full week in May), pulling together April 1st's TSLL's Spring Shopping Guide and whatever else wishes to reveal itself to me. :) Excited to see what I will discover. Have fun!
12. Incorporate regular self-care and model it for others in your life
That hot bath you used to take infrequently, but love and look forward to deeply . . . take it regularly, every week, every other day, but make it a ritual you look forward as well as savor when you slip into the hot bubble bath of comfort. Last year, I shared 31 Ways to Practice Self-Care, episode #242, and as I shared in this episode, while the bubble baths and other pleasures are certainly part of this regular self-care routine, self-care needs to go deeper. When self-care goes deeper, it has even more powerful and long-lasting positive effects on our life. Be sure to check out the show notes and/or episode for much more information on this topic.
The current situation in which we find ourselves is unprecedented in our times, but it has the potential to reveal a tremendous amount about our strengths, compassion and ability to rise in ways we may not have known we were capable. I am confident that while the unknown has the potential to paralyze, it can also teach us an abundance about ourselves, those around us, the world and then reveal to us what we should truly be focused on for a better world moving forward.

~Begin to cultivate a candle cupboard/closet.
I first learned of this idea from Queer Eye's Tan France when during his tour of his home for Architectural Digest he opened up a small closet (I would call it a cupboard) and shared his stocked candles. Now, mind you, my current Candle Cupboard has two candles in it waiting to be enjoyed, but as I come across candles that I love, if they are on sale, I purchase one or two more than I normally would. I don't expect my Candle Cupboard to ever be as full as Tan's, but I love this idea as a Petit Plaisir.
My Candle Cupboard is only barely stocked, but I love this idea and will continue to add to it as my budget and sales and treasures are found. Thank you Tan for sharing this wonderful idea!

There are so many banks that claim to be "Islamic", that is "Interest Free" banking. Could you explain please which banks are preferable?
The institutions that function based on the system of profit and loss are permissible because our religion regards them as commercial institutions. Money can be invested in those institutions and the profit share given by them is halal (legitimate).
Interest-free finance houses
Interest-free Finance Houses usually carry out the transaction of murabaha (selling on profit) due to the special conditions of Turkey. The term murabaha means buying goods at cash price and selling them at deferred payment price. When the private finance house determines the deferred payment price, it takes some criteria into consideration; among those criteria are inflation, the probable yield of the money in the market when it is invested in other instruments, and some other things… The finance house has to meet the expectations of its shareholders that invest money (the holders of profit and loss accounts). A shareholder (account holder) that invests money with the expectation of profit will withdraw his money if he cannot even receive the inflation difference, that is, the value loss caused by inflation, and the finance house will be unable to operate. It is not enough to compensate the inflation difference; it is also necessary to give some real profit. Since the deferred payment price is arranged based on those necessities, it sometimes becomes a bit lower than the bank interest rates and sometimes more than the bank interest rates. However, it is not possible to say that the transaction is illegitimate only by taking that state (that is, the fact that the profit and the interest rates are close to or different from each other) into consideration. In general, the profit in legitimate trade and the sector of industry is like that; sometimes it becomes equal to interest rate, and sometimes it can be different.
Trade is carried out by buying and selling goods in return for a price. Private Finance houses do the same things in the transaction of murabaha. The buying and selling take place in two forms:
a) The finance house appoints its employee to get the goods and to deliver them to the customer; the invoices are issued in compliance with that transaction (two invoices are issued: one by the seller and one by the finance house).
b) The finance house gives the customer who wants to buy goods (according to some questions the person who wants to use funds) written authority to buy goods; the customer buys the goods on behalf of the finance house and the invoice is issued to the finance house; the customer receives the goods on behalf of the finance house and transports it to the place where the finance house wants (it may be his own store or shop); then he buys the goods from the finance house as the customer; this time the finance house issues the invoice to him.
Both transactions are in compliance with fiqh (Islam). It is necessary to know the intention of the parties in order to call it cheating; if the aim is to give/take credit with interest, it is called cheating; if the aim is to really sell goods through deferred payment sale (if the goods are really bought and sold), it cannot be called cheating.
Private finance houses have two more transactions that are nearer to interest-free system – in terms of their economic and social effects - : mudaraba and musharaka.
In mudaraba, a partnership based on the capital from the finance house and the project and administration (labor, enterprise) from the other party is established. Profit is shared in accordance with the contract. The share of the finance house is shared between the bank and the participation account holders that invested in the finance house. If the enterprise suffers a loss, the finance house and the account holders undertake the loss.
In musharaka, partnership of capital is present; an entrepreneur that has some capital but needs some more asks the finance house to add some capital and become partners; a contract is made; the profit is shared in accordance with the contract and the loss is shared depending on the rate of capital. Interest-free banking has many other transactions and services like financial leasing, lending without interest, money transfer, collection of revenues, etc.
In the private finance houses, mudaraba and musharaka are carried out less in comparison to murabaha. Among the reasons why they are carried out less are the impatience of account holders, the expectation of profit without taking risks, the fact that accounts of the companies are partly off the book, lack of reliance and trust caused by the weakening of the consciousness and feelings of trust, keeping promises, loyalty and haram-halal. The better we, Muslims, get in terms of quantity and quality, the better our institutions will be.
Note: We recommend youto read the following views about the issue too.
Private Finance Houses (Participation Banks) and Prohibition of Interest
Private Finance Houses are institutions that are not regarded as banks and that accept funds in accordance with Islamic principles and allows using funds, that functions based on profit-loss partnership instead of interest for the methods of making use of savings and providing loans. The institutions that are named as “Islamic bank”s in the world are called Finance Houses in Turkey.
The fact that the population of Muslims who regard interest as haram have reached a great number in the West have increased the number Islamic finance institutions and caused the other banks to serve those people with the units that they have established.
“Islamic banking” is the fastest-growing finance sector in the world. Now, more than 200 Islamic finance institutions that are active in the world, direct a fund with an investment size of 200 billion dollars.
Furthermore, some of the banks that have established interest-free banking units within their organization are as follows:
Citibank-USA, Goldman Sachs-USA, HSBC- England, Deutshce Bank-Germany, Union Bank of Switzerland- Switzerland, Amro Bank-Holland, Kleinwort Benson, ANZ Grindlays Australia, United Bank of Kuwait and Arab Banking Corporation.
All of those institutions, which are among the greatest banks in the world, have interest-free banking in their organization. The list of banks that are starting interest-free banking is getting longer day by day.
Key Characteristics of Private Finance Houses:
1- They are interest-free:
The most distinguishing characteristic of those banks is that they do not carry out transactions with interest. That is, they do not pay interest for the funds that they obtain; they do not collect interest from their customers for the funds that they provide their customers with.
After all, the reason why they have been established is to serve the people who do not carry out transactions with interest due to their religious beliefs and to serve the companies of those people. Islam accepts that capital is one of the production factors and that it has a cost. However, it rejects the idea that the capital should demand a pre-determined yield, that is, interest. In other words, it is forbidden to earn money for money.
2- They are trade-related:
The fact that interest is forbidden, trade and profit are legitimate in Islam urges those institutions carry out trade related transactions with their customers. Since money trade is forbidden in Islam, it is necessary to carry out trade of goods in order to earn money.
3- They are equity related:
It is a generally accepted truth that pure Islamic banking includes loss-profit partnership (mudaraba) or capital participation (musharaka).
The capital owner can share the profit with the entrepreneur obtained thanks to his expertise and effort. The rate of the profit, which is the yield of the capital, that is, in what percentages it will be shared is determined beforehand but the amount is not certain.
4- The investments should be ethical:
The investments should be made within the framework of legitimate fields in terms of Islam. In this context, Islamic investments should be environment-friendly, alms-giving, enabling the participation of the community, respectful to humanitarian values, excluding pornography, armament, alcohol and gambling.
Primary products and services of private Finance Houses
1- Mudaraba and Musharaka:
They are the basic methods that form the essence of the Islamic banking in terms of fund using. However, since the yield comes in the long term, those transactions are not used sufficiently. It is indisputable that mudaraba and musharaka are in accordance with Shariah.
2- Leasing Transactions:
In the transaction of leasing, the finance house buys the machinery and equipment, rents it to the customer and collects the price of them in the form of installments. In our opinion, it is outside the prohibition of interest.
3- Murabaha:
In this method, the finance house buys the machinery, etc that the customer needs on behalf of the customer and sells it to the customer by adding some profit to them. The price of the goods is repaid to the finance house by the customer in the form of installments.
It is claimed that murabaha contains covered interest and that it resembles interest rather than commercial profit because it does not contain the risk factor that should be present in normal trade and the yield is predetermined. We do not think that those criticisms are right due to the following reasons:
• Murahaba is a kind of trade that is carried out upon ordering and that kind of trade is widespread in every market.
• The cost plus method used in pricing is a frequently used method in trade. It is completely normal that the seller adds a certain percentage of profit to the cost. That is, the profit margin is predetermined.
• The claim that murabaha does not contain the risk of the normal trade is not true. There exists the risk that the customer may not pay the price just as in the normal trade. It is called market risk or counter-party risk in terminology.
One of the most criticized issues is that the rate in the deferred payment price in murabaha is about the same as the rate of interest of the other banks and therefore it is covered interest.
In our opinion, that criticism is groundless because every merchant in the market has to consider the rate of inflation when he prices the goods for deferred payment. A deferred payment rate under the rate of inflation will inflict a loss on the seller. Similarly, private finance houses have to add a difference to the cost at least equal to the rate of inflation. The rate of inflation is the primary element that determines the rate of interest and it is generally in parallel with the rate of interest. Therefore, it is natural even necessary in terms of economy that the rate of deferred payment and the rate of interest is close to each other.
Therefore, the fact that the deferred payment rate is close to the rate of interest does not make murabaha an interest transaction. As it is explained above, private finance house function in an economy based on interest; it is not possible for the pricing of the funds to be unaffected by the current rates of interest.
Those explanations are also valid for leasing.
4- Buying and Selling Documents in Return for Goods
It is a method of providing funds by Private Finance Houses that form a “grey field”. Documents belonging to an export party realized thorough deferred payment sale are bought from the exporter in return for cash; then, they are sold to the same exporter by adding a difference of deferred payment and the money is collected in the form of installments. For instance, documents having a value of 50 thousand dollars are bought by the finance house from the customer in return for 45 thousand dollars and that amount is paid to the customer at once; simultaneously, the customer sells the documents to the finance house for 50 thousand dollars with deferred payment sale. 5 thousand dollars is the profit of the finance house and the cost of the customer.
It is very difficult to ignore that it is a transaction of discount no matter how good-intentioned you are. As a matter of fact, it can be claimed that those documents represent the goods and that they are tradable goods as in murabaha. However, it is very disputable to regard that defense as valid because the export subject to that transaction is a finished export. The goods have left the Turkish customs and probably have reached the country where the buyer is; at least, they are on the way somewhere outside Turkey. At any rate, the ownership of those goods is not in the exporter. However, the exporter is the debtee and a policy or bond among those documents proves that he has the right to receive the money. The document that the finance house buys and sells back is not the goods but the proof that the customer has the right to receive the money. The deferred debt that the exporter will receive in the future is paid to him now and an amount of money is collected from him. In other words, the customer is sold the time. It is called the time value of the money in finance and it is interest.
A policy or bond that bears the signature of the foreign importer and sometimes also the signature of the guarantor bank is a finance instrument. That document is arranged by the importer as an alternative for cash payment. That is, the importer has arranged a debt document in return for the transfer of the ownership of the goods to him. That bond has two uses:
a- It proves the debt relationship that originates from the foreign trade transaction in question.
b- It enables the exporter to transform the price of the export into cash by discounting it in a bank or finance institution without waiting for the redemption date.
The conclusion to be drawn from it is that the Private Finance House has a structure that is suitable to support exports before shipment not finished exports. The raw materials and intermediate goods to be used in the goods to be exported can be provided for the exporter through murabaha. When the export of ready-made goods is in question, those goods can be sold to the exporter through murabaha.
Pricing Services and Products
We sometimes observe that the services and products presented by Private Finance Houses are expensive and that they discontent and disappoint customers due to the prices higher than those of the commercial banks. Some people put forward that high pricing harms the Islamic characteristic of those institutions and puts them in the same level as banks with interest religiously.
First of all, we should state that high pricing does not transform a sound transaction into a transaction with interest religiously. For instance, a letter of guarantee given by a Private Finance Institution does not have any drawbacks religiously. The commission taken in return for that service is naturally legitimate. The fact that the rate of the commission is high does not turn the transaction of the letter of guarantee into a haram transaction.
However, criticisms stating that the customer is misused in terms of high commission and price that the trust is abused and that the amount taken for the service is high.
On the other hand, excessiveness in pricing can be regarded as an indication that the private finance house works with a high cost or that it carries out a wrong marketing policy.
What determines in which level the commissions and prices are regarded as reasonable is the market conditions and competition. In theory, a private finance house that charges more money than its competitors will fall behind and its market share will decrease. It is the punishment given to that institution by the market. Although what we have stated is true in theory, it is difficult to say that there exists real competition between the private finance houses and commercial banks in terms of customers because what determines the preference of the customer is the religion. The customers of those institutions do not actually go to private finance houses in order to receive cheaper service; the peace and comfort of acting in accordance with Islam plays an important role in preferring the bank that they need for banking services.
Therefore, the competition can be only among the private finance houses. Thus, the private finance houses should take that aspect of the issue into consideration when determining the prices for their customers and they should carry out pricing policies that will make them gain normal profits.
