With xenophobia rising in South Africa as its economic crisis deepens, Home Office Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has announced plans to toughen asylum and immigration laws in a move that will have far-reaching consequences for foreign nationals who seek political or economic refuge in the country.
His proposals are contained in a document, known as a White Paper, which has been released for public discussion as the first step towards adopting legislation that will mark a decisive break with the more embracing policy that the government - led by the African National Congress (ANC) - championed after it took power at the end of the racist system of apartheid in 1994.
In a sign of the extent to which he envisages changes, Dr Motsoaledi said the government had made a "serious mistake" about two years later when it signed up to international agreements - such as the UN's refugee convention - without seeking exemptions from certain clauses.
This was unlike many other countries, which opted out of clauses giving asylum-seekers and refugees the same rights as their citizens - including the right to employment and education for their children, he said.
Paddy Harper, a journalist with South Africa's Mail & Guardian newspaper, said Dr Motsoaledi's proposals were the latest sign that the government believed it went too far after white-minority rule ended.
"South Africa had been a pariah during apartheid, and as the ANC led its integration into the world it opened up the country to immigrants and asylum-seekers, with many coming from other parts of Africa and Asia," Harper told the BBC.
"The ANC government also did this in the interest of pan-African and international solidarity because of the support it received from other countries during the struggle against apartheid," he said.
"The political and economic dynamics have changed considerably since then, which explains the shift in government thinking."
Dr Motsoaledi is also pushing for people to seek asylum in the first safe country they enter, meaning they could be denied asylum if they came via other countries.
His proposal would mostly affect those from other African nations, as they form the bulk of refugees and asylum-seekers fleeing conflict and persecution.
According to the UN, about 250,000 refugees and asylum seekers live in South Africa. These are separate from documented or undocumented foreign nationals in the country for other reasons, including better economic opportunities.
In a paper published in 2021, South African academic Khangelani Moyo said that 25% of the refugees and asylum seekers came from Ethiopia, 23% from the Democratic of Republic of Congo, 11% from Somalia, 10% from Bangladesh and 6% from Zimbabwe.
Harper says the number of refugees and asylum-seekers may be small but it feds into deeper hostility towards foreigners whose population has increased over the last three decades, while South Africa's unemployment rate has soared to around 32%.
"Immigrants - especially Somalis and Bangladeshis - are seen to be controlling the economy of townships, and are accused of taking the jobs of locals. It has led to attacks on migrants, and the emergence of anti-migrant groups, like Operation Dudula," he said.
With this in mind, Harper says that Dr Motsoaledi was looking to next year's elections when he unveiled his proposals.
"Some of the opposition parties are likely to make migration a major campaign issue. The ANC fears losing support, and wants to be seen to be doing something about it, " he said, adding that the governing party's focus on migration also helps deflect attention from its own failures in improving the economy and public services.
In June, senior ANC official Fikile Mbalula described undocumented immigrants as a "ticking timebomb" for South Africa.
"Illegal immigrants put a heavy strain on the fiscus, with adverse effects on service delivery, the overstretched health sector, high unemployment and poverty," he said.
South Africa's latest census recorded more than 2.4 million migrants last year, with the highest percentage coming from neighbouring Zimbabwe at 45.5%, followed by Mozambique and Lesotho.
They make up only around 3% of the total population of 62 million - though officials acknowledge the difficulty in counting foreign nationals, especially those who are undocumented.
For Dr Mosoaledi, it is clear "no-one can account for all undocumented migrants" in South Africa and says the government was already trying to deal with them.
"Immigration Services deport between 15, 000 and 20,000 illegal foreigners every year at a huge cost. This number is on the increase," he said, pointing out that the government was setting up a new law enforcement agency - known as the Border Management Authority (BMA) - to "significantly reduce the risk of foreigners entering the country illegally".
"New legislation must be introduced to strengthen the powers of immigration officers and inspectorate, and make continuing training compulsory," Dr Motsoaledi added.
He also called for the establishment of immigration courts, saying "the current legislative framework was untenable and leads to long delays in finalising immigration matters, including deportation".
Dr Moyo told the BBC that it was difficult to clamp down on undocumented migrants, as most were from neighbouring states.
"If you arrest and deport them, they come back the following week," he said.
"You can't stop the movement of people. It's better to create a mechanism to allow people to be documented."
Yet, with an election looming, the government is unlikely to drop its plans, especially as some opinion polls suggest that the ANC risks losing its outright majority in parliament for the first time since 1994.
As Dr Moyo noted, those parties that called for tougher immigration policies, including tighter border controls, performed "very well" in the 2021 local elections in South Africa's economic heartland of Johannesburg and the capital, Tshwane.

Submissions are CLOSED.
01CEST - 18CEST 1st of June (find the current time here)
RULES:
Submissions will only be open during this specific time, then the askbox will close. (that means no questions or other things can be sent to me at that point for a while)
All required information needs to be filled in! Any submissions that lacks any of required info will instantly be deleted.
I want to showcase more non-English songs! So please specify which language the song is in. Write instrumental instead of language on instrumental songs. Also remember to add country of origin of the artist because it's more fun to hear things from all over the world, not just "the usual" bunch! (yes, english songs from north america & europe are still fine to add!)
Artist Song title Year Genre Language Country of origin
Again; all of the above needs to be specified or the message will be deleted.
Artists that have previously been featured on the blog are welcome back, of course! Just make sure to not submit songs that have already been posted!
The first 220 songs are all listed here. The songs between 221 and 230 can be found as listed in the Showdown polls. Of course it's ok to add songs being covered by other artists than the original! (final choice which goes is up to me though)
For artists on a smaller scale and/or that are very local and have basically no info to be found online, please do make sure to send along a blurb with info about them and their song. :) It doesn't have to be much, but something is better than nothing! The songs needs to be available on Youtube and/or Spotify for people to get the chance to listen and discover the full versions.
There will be a maximum of 7 SONGS PER USER, so make sure to send them all in ONE message to my askbox. Only users that already follows this blog are allowed to submit songs, obviously, lol. New and empty accounts don't count, don't be daft! 😂 Anything sent to me from a freshly created account will be deleted because you haven't even had time to discover and follow this blog yet.
Double-check all the info before sending it in, there's no rush unless you're very last minute. :'D If you send in multiple messages instead of a single one, they will be deleted.
There's still way over a thousand songs from before to go through All the old song submissions are still waiting in my askbox, so if you've already submitted them you don't have to re-submit them. 💖 So with both the old and these new songs, please have patience for them to be added. 😅💖
Example of submissions: 1- A-ha - Take On Me, 1985, synth-pop, english, norway 2- Måneskin - Zitti e Buoni, 2021, glam/punk rock, italian, italy 3- Youssou N'Dour and Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds, 1994, ballad, wolof/english/french, senegal+sweden

Twist An Episode Day!
-Basically, it's take any episode of Clone Wars, Bad Batch, anything the clones are in and twist it so the CLONES are the ones coming out on top. Do something to an episode so that it's the soldiers fighting, not the corrupt leadership, who benefit. Preferably something a little out there, a lil spooky, but it can be whatever you want. Use the extra day so that for once, it's the clones winning.

Three Days || Matthew Tkachuk
Summary: A call with Matthew after game three of Calgary’s first round in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Word Count: 420
Maleeha’s Masterlist
a/n: this is gender neutral. hope you enjoy this! feedback is appreciated
The game was tough. Calgary lost 4-2 against the Stars and now were loosing the series 2-1. It was a rough game, the Flames and Stars added up 45 penalties and 124 penalty minutes in the first three games of the series. Matthew came out of the game with an assist and a bloodied hand.
About an hour or so after the game ended, you got a text from Matthew saying that he was ready to call you. You ran over to your shared room and called him as fast as you could. It took a couple rings for Matthew to pick up, but once his face popped up on the screen, you couldn’t help but smile.
Matthew greeted you with a wave- with his hand that was hurt during the game- and winced. Your smile dropped and you went into doctor mode.
“Matthew did you take medicine?” You questioned.
He looked up in thought before answering “Yeah, I was given Advil when I went to the locker room.”
“How much does it hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt too much.” He looked around the room he was in to avoid your concerned look. You knew Matthew too well to believe that what he said was true and remembered his wince when he waved to you.
“Matthew,” you called his name calmly. “You can talk to me.”
“I know.” He looked back at you and took a deep breath before confessing the truth. “It hurts. A lot more than I’d like to admit.” You opened your mouth to say something, but Matthew cut you off. “I wish it was a home game. I’d do anything to be in your arms right now.”
“Oh love, I wish you were in my arms too.” You watched him softly smile as you calculated how long it would be until he was home. “Three more days until you’re home.”
“Call your boss, you are not going to work.”
“Matthew, I can’t-”
“Please?” He looked at you with pleading eyes.
“I’ll try to see if someone can cover my shift on Tuesday. One day off can’t hurt.” You looked at your screen, seeing Matthew fighting to stay awake. “You look tired, go to sleep.”
“But I want to talk to you. How was your day?”
“We’ll call tomorrow, okay?”
“Alright. I love you”
“I love you too.” The call ended and you looked at your phone background, a picture of you and Matthew when you surprised him at an away game. “I’ll see you in three days.”

Understand || Steve Rogers
i used the prompt “you've been in a fight, your lover has already gone to bed, without resolving it, but you still whisper 'i love you’ before crawling into bed, because it's something you always do before going to sleep, and this fight doesn't change anything bonus: your lover isn't actually asleep, and pulls you into their arms” from this prompt list. changed it a little but that’s okay
Summary: You and Steve got in a fight while making dinner
Word count: 995
Read time: 3 minutes and 38 seconds

Warnings: an argument, Steve’s kind of an ass

thank you @2manytabsopen for talking with me about this fic. kesh is amazing and this fic would not exist if it wasn’t for her
Dating an Avenger was difficult, but dating an Avenger who’s name was Steven Grant Rogers was way more difficult than dating any other Avenger. You loved Steve for many reasons, he was headstrong, determined, and he stood up for the things he believed to be true- even if standing up for it was illegal.
Since the beginning of your relationship with Steve, you both agreed that you would be open about whatever was on your minds, but after the fight with Ultron, Steve began to shut you out. You gave Steve some space for a few days after he came back from Sokovia since he normally was more distant after a big fight, but he continued to be distant. He was barely home, only staying to quietly eat and sleep. You did whatever you could do make him relax, mostly by cooking whatever he was in the mood for.
You kept this up for about a year, cooking, cleaning, and hardly talking to your boyfriend. After Rumlow blew himself up and Wanda deflected the blow into a nearby building, everything started to spiral out of control. The UN was preparing to pass the Sokovia Accords- which Steve was not wanting to sign-, the Avengers split up, Peggy passed away, all while Steve was trying to bring his best friend back from being brainwashed.
Steve was surprisingly home and spending time with you, cleaning up and washing the dishes while you cooked dinner. You were making grilled salmon, something you had made plenty of times before. There were no words being spoking between you two, the only exception being “excuse me” and “here you go”. Usually, cooking with Steve was fun and relaxing, but you had a million thoughts going through your head at once. You were worried about Steve, and your relationship with him. You didn’t want to admit it, but your relationship was deteriorating right before your eyes.
“You’re doing that wrong.” Steve said, snapping you out of your thoughts. You looked over at him, giving him a questioning look. “You need to add at least double the amount of pepper.” Glancing down to the bowl that held your spice mix, you re-assessed how much pepper you put in.
“No, I put in the right amount.” You corrected. “Don’t worry, I’ve made this dish thousands of times, I know how many spices to put in.”
“But that’s not the right-” Steve scoffed, cutting himself off. “Fine, I guess we’ll have bland salmon.”
“I put in one and a half teaspoons and that’s what the recipe says. If you want, you can check the recipe.” You reasoned. You studied his faces worriedly as he angrily glared at the spice mix. “Steve, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong.” He harshly answered. “Why would something be wrong?” You hesitantly walked over to him, placing your hand on his cheek, forcing him to look at you.
“You’ve just been,” you paused, carefully thinking of the proper word to use. “distant.”
“Distant?” He pulled out of your comforting touch. “Of course I’ve been distant. My life is literally shattering before me.”
“Steve-”
“People are expecting me to do what’s right, but I don’t think signing the Accords is ‘what’s right’. I’m expected to be this perfect man, this perfect hero, but I’m not. I’m held up to unrealistic expectations and it’s taking a toll on me.”
“How can you say that?” You retorted, disbelief completely present in your voice.
“What?”
“How can you say that,” you repeated. “while you expect me to be the perfect partner.”
“What do you mean?”
“You expect me to cook, and clean, and comfort you, and say the right things at the right time.” You listed. “I know it’s cliché, but I need you to realize that no one is perfect. You don’t need to hold yourself and those around you to such high expectations.”
“But I need to be perfect. So does Tony, and Nat, and Sam, and everyone else. We’ve had to be perfect since the day we became the heros.”
“No.” you sighed. “You don’t have to be perfect.”
“You don’t understand.”

Dental Procedures in Columbia, MO, Are More Affordable Than in Other Parts of the USA
When it comes to dental care, the cost can often be a significant concern, especially in places like North America and Europe, where dental procedures can be expensive. However, residents of Columbia, MO, are fortunate to have access to more affordable dental services without compromising on quality. At DrFooteDental, we are committed to providing high-quality dental care at a price that is more accessible to a wider range of patients. In this blog, we’ll explore why dental procedures in Columbia, MO, are more affordable and how DrFooteDental is leading the way in making dental health accessible for all.
Why Are Dental Procedures in Columbia, MO, More Affordable?
1. Lower Overhead Costs
In many major cities across the USA, the cost of operating a dental practice can be significantly higher due to factors like rent, utilities, and local regulations. Columbia, MO, however, offers a more affordable business environment, which directly impacts the cost of dental procedures. DrFooteDental benefits from this lower overhead, passing on the savings to patients in the form of more affordable treatment options.
2. Competitive Local Market
Columbia, MO, has a competitive healthcare market, and this competition helps keep dental procedure costs lower. With several reputable dental clinics in the area, dentists are able to offer competitive pricing without sacrificing quality. This healthy competition ensures that patients are getting the best possible care at a price that makes sense for their budget.
3. Reduced Labor and Material Costs
Labor costs and material expenses are also lower in Columbia compared to major metropolitan areas. This means that dental offices, such as DrFooteDental, can offer the same high-quality services at a more affordable price. Our staff, while highly trained and experienced, benefits from lower living costs in Columbia, and this translates into cost savings for our patients.
The Benefits of Affordable Dental Care in Columbia, MO
1. Access to High-Quality Care
Just because dental procedures are more affordable in Columbia doesn’t mean quality is compromised. DrFooteDental is committed to providing the same level of care you would expect from high-end dental offices in large cities. Our state-of-the-art equipment, skilled professionals, and patient-focused approach ensure that you receive the best care possible.
2. Preventative Care Becomes More Accessible
With lower costs, patients are more likely to prioritize preventative care, such as routine check-ups, cleanings, and early interventions. Preventative dental care can help reduce the need for expensive, more invasive treatments down the line, leading to long-term savings for patients.
3. Cost-Effective Treatment for Families
For families, especially those with multiple children needing dental work, the affordability of procedures in Columbia can make a big difference. Families can keep up with necessary dental appointments without worrying about the financial burden that often comes with dental care in larger cities.

Willow Tea
Admit it. Headaches suck. They come on when you least want them, and they are never welcome. Headaches, and back pain, are the most common kinds of pain that people suffer from. It is always a bad day when they happen.
People in ancient times actually had a cure for headaches, which they made from the bark of the white willow tree. White willow tree bark contains a natural substance called salicilin, a bitter-tasting chemical which has been known to be highly effective in curing headaches for thousands of years.
White willow is native to Europe and North America. The bark is served in the form of a tea. Scrape the bark from branches which are between two and three years old. No more than two or three teaspoons of the bark shavings are needed, which can be steeped and served like a tea.
This is willow bark, ready for making willow tea.
If you do not have access to willow trees, don't worry. Here is a meditation you can do, which will have the same effect of washing away your headaches.
Find a comfortable spot, in a safe and quiet place. This place alone should have the effect of calming your body immediately. You need only take with you a drink of water, preferably still rather than sparkling, and as cold as possible.
Once you are there, settle your body in a comfortable position, preferably sitting as straight as possible, without putting undue stress on the body.
Begin by focusing on the water in the glass. Note its stillness, and the little vibrations caused by the tiniest body movements and adjustments. Take a small sip of the water. Let it settle in your mouth a moment. Try to get some of the water up to the back of your mouth, to let it cool your throat.
Once you swallow it, clear your throat and take a deep breath in. Let yourself draw in golden light from outside, deep into you. Let that golden light suffuse your muscles with light, and relaxation. Let the light fill your body, and let it relax you.
Take a second sip of the water, and once you've cleared your throat, breathe in more of the light and make your body and mind lighter. Each sip draws in more light, and the more you breathe in, the lighter your body and mind are.
And you'll soon find the light filling your entire body, and when your eyes change focus, that is the time to release that light and let out all the muscle tension which caused the headache. Let it out, a beautiful stream of light, drawing out your thoughts, the stresses, the tensions, and let your thoughts go.
All your thoughts, going, replaced with peace and relaxation and stillness, as your conscious mind lets go and floats away with the light and the tensions, and when you are ready, and your conscious mind is gone, count from 3.
3, and the tensions and pain are too faint to feel.
2, and your last conscious thought drifts out with the light.
1, and your focus has shifted, and you're now empty and blank. You'll come back in the room in twenty minutes, your body and mind feeling wonderful.

oh wow that’s really different from america. lemme try to explain our terrible education system😃
school starts at diff times of year depending on what region you’re in. i’m pretty sure the southern states are more likely to start in like the beginning of august, but the north usually starts at the beginning of september. my district used to but every year we slowly push it back a day and now i start in the last week of august which is annoying.
i think it’s required that every public school has 180 days. i’m not sure what the deal with private school is. so public school ends sometime from may to june depending on where u live.
our school breaks kind of suck. we get a week of christmas break, a week of spring break, a week at presidents day at the end of feb, and we have a bunch of random singular days off usually for religious holidays. my friend from europe says she gets 2 weeks for christmas and spring break and i’m lowkey jealous.
then there’s the diff types of schools. preschool i’m pretty sure is optional, but that might depend on where u live. that’s for like 3 - 5 year olds. then there’s kindgergarten which is the first year of required schooling and thats for like 6 or 7 year olds. that’s also the first year of elementary school if pretty sure. then the rest of elementary is 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. 7 - 9 year olds ish. and then depending on the district, 4th and 5th grade may be in a diff physical school, but they still technically count as elementary.
then there’s middle school. depending on the town it could either start with 5th or 6th grade, but i’m pretty sure starting with 6 is more common? middle school ends with 8th grade, so the age range in typically 11 - 14/15.
then there’s high school which goes from 9th grade - 12th grade, ages 15 - 18. that’s like the hardest level, and there’s all the tests and college applications in 11th and 12th grade. so ig our college is like yalls university. it’s not required, but it’s lowkey not that sociallly acceptable to not go. and it’s also really expensive.
now lemme explain the start and period times. i’m honestly not sure the average start time, but i know in some places it’s VERY early. one district nearby starts at 7. my high school used to start at 7 20, but after a lot of complaining, somehow it got moved to 8 20, and we end at 3. every single school in the district starts at different times in order to make the bus routes work.
and then there’s the periods. it’s diff depending on the age and school. my elementary school schedule was so weird that i don’t remember it. in my middle school schedule, we had 8 periods in a day, and each grade had a diff lunch time. in 8th grade we had 6 periods, lunch for 30 mins, and 2 more after lunch, then go home. each period there was around 40 mins.
but in my high school there’s 6 periods. 3 before lunch, then we have lunch for an hour, but for freshman on every fourth day half of it is taken away by science lab time. then there’s three periods after lunch. each is like 50 mins? and the entire school eats lunch at the same time which is kind of scary cuz there’s like 2000 kids, and the cafeteria is so small it’s only for upperclassman, so we have to sit in like random places around the school. my personal fav spot is the choir room.
so yeah, there’s america for ya 😃i apologize for my crazy yapping but thank u for coming to my ted talk
ok genuine question for any americans 😭
how do your school days work?? Like specifically high school, cus I was wondering how your days would go and I genuinely don’t understand 😭 I’ve tried googling it but get so many different answers and Idek how america works anymore
for context I’m British (English), instead of middle-high school n then college we have primary school (4-10/11 depending on birthday) and then secondary school (11-15/16 also depending on birthday) and then either sixth form (which is basically college just with the same hours as secondary) or college (which is the same as sixth form but you only go in when you have classes) which are both 16-18 (or 17 depending on your birthday)
Our school year is start of of September-late July (or at least it is/was for me) and our school days are from around 8-9 to around 3 (this depends on the school, for my secondary school my hours were 8:45 [9:10 from the start of lessons] to 3:15). We have 5 periods/classes (this may also depend but most schools where I live have this) which are usually around an hour, and a break in the morning which (for me) was 15 minutes, n then lunch in the afternoon which (once again, for me) was 35ish minutes
We also don’t call them grades, for us they’re years (eg - year 6, year 7 etc) and I think your numbers are a year behind us (eg - google tells me that 6th grade is our equivalent of year 7 [which is the first yr of secondary at ages 11/12])
also I think for Americans, your college is our university?? For us uni starts at age 18 (thats the minimum but u can join whenever) n its where you get a degree
basically just how tf do ur school work (specifically the structure of your days because I’ve seen people say that have up to 6 or even 8 periods?? And I have genuinely no clue how that would work, unless ur periods were rlly short or your days were rlly long 😭😭)

DP AU - Monsters & Ghostly Marriages
Dude, I just had an idea for a story.
Like, does anyone know about Ghost Marriages. It's commonly a Chinese tradition, but not entirely.
Anyway, imagine if Danny Phantom's world had always had supernatural creatures freely roaming the earth. I'm not just talking ghosts, vampires, werewolves, & all that, but also cultural supernatural beings such as yōkai in Japan?
Each continent has at least one permanent portal. For instance, Asia's Kamui, Japan has a lake at the foot of Ezofuji where the Ark of Yamato once was. (Okami reference.) The lake acts as a portal to the Makai, or the yōkai realm (it also hosts the Chinese yaoguai & Hindu yaksha; all 3 are basically different words for the same overall species). Now, despite what Inuyasha & Yu Yu Hakusho would have you believe, yōkai aren't demons as demons are a Judeo-Christian concept.
That's a mistranslation. Rather, they are more in-line with something called daemon which are nature spirits. Though, not in the literal sense. I know, similar words, different meanings. The closest thing the Japanese have to actual demons would be akuma, which means devil.
Europe & America also have several portals to the fae realm, one being Stonehenge as well as any ring of mushrooms, as well as an entrance to the different worlds of Yggdrasil in Norway. There's also the mist which hides the Greek monsters from view by mortals. Not to mention the doorway to Lalotai in Hawaii.
All except North America, until the Fentons began their research into the Ghost Zone on scientific terms.
Anyway, in this au, Tutelary spirits are a well-known concept, both as Earthbound spirits & Hereafter ghosts (a.k.a. GZ ghosts).
These Tutelaries are one way by which towns can be shielded from certain threats.
In a world like this, smaller towns have their own version of Ghost Marriages where in order to forge a stronger bond between community & Tutelary, a young member of the town will be selected to marry their guardian. According to tradition, that young individual is supposed to take a vow of celibacy, because, ya know, humans & ghosts aren't supposed to mix like that & you're only supposed to do those things with your spouse, but when your spouse is a ghost... So, this role is similar in prestige to becoming the miko of Shinto religion or a monk/nun of Catholic tradition in that you are expected to serve your patron as you would a spouse. If the human is sexually unfaithful, then the Tutelary looses the power given to him or her by the bond.
Rape of said spouse does not count as being unfaithful as ghosts & spirits work on a spiritual, mental, & emotional level & rape takes the choice from the victim. It only counts if the spouse chooses to lay with someone else.
The actual ceremony to marry them is sort of a ritual that acts as both a marriage & a funeral to honor the Tutelary, to bind the 2 together & give the town spirit the power to fight off various supernatural creatures & other threats both foreign & domestic based on the bond between husband & wife.
In some ways, you could say that the Tutelary becomes their new spouse's familiar.
In Amity's case, Danny is their town Tutelary & no one but Team Phantom, Dani, Vlad, (potentially Dan in the case of AGIT) the ghosts, & the Fentons (provided the reveal has taken place) know about Danny being Halfa & a Psychopomp for the Fenton's Ghost Portal. Psychopomps being spirits that ferry souls from the world of the living to the world of the dead & a subcategory of Gatekeeper Ghost which are ghosts that died in the creation of a portal from one plane of existence to another. They guard the portal between worlds. Psychopomps are specifically Gatekeeper Ghosts that guard portals to the Infinite Realms.
So, someone, probably Paulina, brings up the idea of performing a Ghost Marriage for Phantom to make him more powerful. That it should be the prettiest & bestest girl in town.
However, instead of Paulina instantly being chosen to be Phantom's bride like she had thought would happen, her father & the council elect to do something else. Something similar to when Aragon was scouting out wives happens. A pageant where every unwed female from 13 up is forced to attend with Phantom (not Fenton) as the judge, but no one but Paulina & the higher ups in town know the actual stakes. So, when Phantom selects either Sam or Valerie as the winner this time, they are all surprised when the mayor shouts, "Phantom has chosen! Time to begin planning!" (In the case of it being after AGIT, it'd likely be Sam.)
Phantom & whichever girl he chose is swept away & ceremony plans are made.
For that matter, Valerie still hates Phantom because the accident that cost her dad his job happens. But it gets even worse when she learns from one of her mom's old notebooks that she's from a hunter clan.
Her clan actually used to have an alliance with the Fentons & Amity was their home base.
Once uncivil & rogue supernaturals start showing up to make trouble, she begins to study her mom's work to try & help protect the town.
Anyway, I'm thinking that the monsters & supernaturals are like a mix of the ones in a Monster High, Supernatural, & Wizarding World xover, but one that focuses on Amity's Monster Underground of Calamity Park.
In this version, something happened to reveal the supernatural world to mortals. Not to mention, Chuck from Supernatural is actually Yaldabaoth, a very powerful pagan deity of gnosticism, & every angel & demon that appeared in the show was an attempt by him to gain worshipers piggybacking off the growing momentum of Christianity. Like, these people didn't know this. He was playing them as much as he played everyone else. Not to mention the fact that he created the system of human souls being tortured until they became demons.
The truth of the matter is that his fabricated 'heaven' & 'hell' were keeping these souls from making their way to natural portals to begin their Journey of the Soul(TM) to the center of the GZ where the Doorway to The End lay.
If you wanna know more about that, see this:
Also, that scene where Chuck died & the sun went out was a fabrication to trick those around him into believing his hoax. For one, if the sun did go out, it'd take a long time for us to notice because light would still be traveling to the Earth. Plus, if he did die & he was the actual God, everyone & everything would've ceased to exist with him. However, that would've been counterproductive as he needed the Winchesters to believe he was something he wasn't. This is all aside from the fact that God can't die, nor can he lose.
Now, anyway, there are civilized monsters which makes up the majority of the Monster High cast. However, there are also uncivilized monsters which are like what monkeys are to humans in the evolutionary sense, as well as rogue supernaturals which are basically criminals of the supernatural persuasion & no one is okay with either of those. These make up most of the Supernatural rogue's gallery.
Uncivil & rogue supernaturals are generally what causes trouble with humans. However, because most civil supernaturals hide, this results in fear & xenophobia. The illustrious, now infamous, Nightingales are known to be a clan to believe as such.
The Fentons were once Fenton-Nightingales, when in the 1600s, a witch hunter broke off from them & reinstated the Fenton line, asserting that maybe not all supernaturals were purely evil. Except for ghosts, of course! Meanwhile, the other half of the Fenton-Nightingales retook the Nightingale name & remained general supernatural hunters.
Here's a couple links to my concepts of the character's legacies:
Anyway, I kinda wanna see this be a situation where the humans & civilized supernaturals are still trying to get used to each other in Amity & Calamity. Like, Danny ended up being the first publically known supernatural being all over the world after some accident or other, whether it be the Disasteroid or something else that happened after AGIT. Before all that, monsters were a myth, but now, more & more of the supernatural underground is slowly coming out to show themselves. Suddenly the Mansons are coming out as legacy vampires like in my version of the Supernatural Trio AU & it's sorta insane.
Like in my version of Supernatural Trio, I'd make Tucker a cyborg, but then it turns out that he has a dormant werewolf gene & when he transforms, he ends up looking more jackel-like & someday takes on an Egyptian cyberpunk look.
At the same time, Vlad turns out to be half-lugat with some strigoi tendencies. As in, when he died, he was then revived as half-lugat, half-ghost, but he's descended from a strigoi. So, he has a mix of their powers, but all this monsters & magic stuff is just as much news to him as anyone else, so he doesn't know anything about his vampiric abilities or nature having figured that his need to feed on both blood & core-plasm was an aspect of being half-ghost.
Anyway, the marriage/funeral ritual is complete with whichever girl was chosen & now Danny is married & it's hella awkward.
Like, if the Disasteroid/AGIT happened, either it's Sam & they're still dating which makes the situation easier but too fast & awkward for them. Or it turned out that, in a heel-face turn to how the show portrayed it, Sam still had a lot of growing to do before she could be a good girlfriend. So, they decided to break it off.
Also, something interesting, if the Disasteroid did happen, but not AGIT, maybe only certain members of Amity that went to build the towers know that Fenton is Phantom (not including Valerie to add drama), while the rest of the world only knows that Phantom saved the world? That could be something.
Like, only a handful of adults know, like Lancer & the Fentons & so on.
Also, in the case of the Disasteroid, but not AGIT, Vlad was smart enough to use a duplicate to make it look like he overshadowed 'Vlad Masters,' but during the ride with Jack to the Disasteroid, he revealed himself to the other man, surprising him & laying into the orange-clad oaf.
So, only Jack knows about Vlad being Plasmius until he tells his wife. This would create tension between the 3 later where Vlad throws Maddie under the bus by coyly speaking about Colorado. Asking if she'd even told the man about his schemes there, which ends up causing a bit of a rift between the Fenton parents. Not because Jack thinks she cheated, because he doesn't. He knows her, sometimes better than he knows himself, & he knows she wouldn't do that.
No, what makes him angry was that she never told him that Vlad came onto her. If she had, he would've broken his supposed 'friendship' with Vlad long ago.
Not to mention, the Fentons are against their still teenaged son getting married no matter who it's to, because they feel like it's too soon.
It's a lot of chaos & I'll probably polish this up later, but yeah.
All I know is that, it's eventually discovered that because Danny is a Halfa, this means that his wife is free to have sexual relations with him as a result (after they've turned at least 18) & that the spell binding them even grants boons for it.
Not only that, but because of both Sam & Valerie slowly becoming Ecto-Liminal, they are both compatible with Danny. Sam more so due to Vlad giving her ecto-herpies & her being given powers by Undergrowth & this eventually leading to her dying & being revived as a Halfa herself.
This means that in either case, they can eventually have kids. Though that's years down the line after they'd grown up.
The only reason the Mansons allowed this to happen was because they knew that it'd keep their daughter celibate, at least until they'd moved out of Amity.

Summary: You met Pierre at the Brazilian Grand Prix and for 3 months you couldn't get in touch.
Warnings: fluff, like 2 swear words
Word count: 2.3k
This one was requested by @jugasly and I know it is not exactly what she wanted but I really tried and I hope you liked it!
Avenida Paulista's Boulevard catches the eye especially through the skyscrapers similar to those in the big North American cities. Brazil's most modern city has much to offer tourists around the world. The most beautiful museums in South America can be found here, the shore is furrowed with lots of sunny beaches. And its nightlife has attracted many tourists.
The largest city in South America makes New York look small. The buses make an unbearable noise and black smoke spreads over the upper floors of the skyscrapers which, through the heat that maintains it during the day, turn the city into a real hell.
I felt myself waking up but I was determined to keep my eyes closed for a little longer but in a few seconds I was awakened violently by the sound of car engines. That's what I deserve for booking the hotel next to the Formula 1 circuit.
You reluctantly got out of bed and went to the window. I saw how the Formula 1 cars are brought on the circuit and I look at my watch. Fuck, it was pre-qualification practice, did I really sleep that much? Honestly, I arrived in the room at 5 o'clock and at 6 I fell asleep so I shouldn't have been so surprised that I slept in.
I was in Brazil with my two best friends to watch a Formula 1 race live and we chose Brazil because we needed a good reason to leave Europe and visit South America for a week, right?
I woke up my friends and in less than half an hour we were leaving the hotel, running, with a big cup of coffee in our hand.
We passed quickly through the front gate, all we needed now was to find our seats.
All around us could be heard the cars speeding on the circuit. My skin was goosebumps and I was looking at my friends who had the same smile on their faces that I think I had.
We find our seats and watch the last 15 minutes of training. We held in our hands the tickets that gave us access to the paddock. We were going to go there after the drivers returned to the garages.
My eyes were searching for Aston Martin Hospitality. I knew that if I returned home from this Grand Prix without an autograph from Sebastian Vettel for my father, I could very well stay in Brazil for the rest of my life.
Being so focused on looking for the green building, I didn't realize that someone was coming in front of me only when I hit a hard chest. I heard my girlfriends gasping. Fuck, I just hope I didn't run into Toto Wolff.
I open my eyes slightly and see a driver's suit, white and blue. Alpha Tauri?
I look up at the driver's face. To be damned. Pierre Gasly. With ruffled hair and a red face, Pierre Gasly was in front of me.
"I'm really, really sorry, I didn't look where I was going. Sorry!" I say and take a step back, stepping out of his personal space.
As I walked away from him, I saw that he was not alone but with Pyry.
"It's okay, I wasn't looking where I was going either," he says, running his hand through his hair, trying to fix it.
I smile at them and then I look at my friends giggling at our embarrassing date.
Pyry motions to Pierre to someone behind me and that makes him take his eyes off me.
"Oh, I have to go," he tells me. "Have fun."
I stood still for a few moments, unable to move. I just met my favorite driver and it couldn't be more embarrassed than that.
"The first meeting with your children's future father was very good." my best friend, Lila, tells me.
"Shut up."
The fact that I found Aston Martin Hospitality and managed to get the autograph for my father and I could take a few pictures with Sebastian Vettel erased the embarrassment caused by the disastrous meeting I had with Pierre Gasly.
For a little time.
As soon as we got out of Aston Martin Hospitality Lila pulled us to McLaren Hospitality, hoping to meet Lando Norris and take some pictures with him, about 100, but who's counting, right?
I was with my head on the phone, sending my father some pictures I took with Sebastian Vettel when I came across someone, this time I lost my balance and I was about to fall but two strong arms caught me. Pierre Gasly, again.
"Honestly, we should stop meeting like this, you could get hurt," he says and laughs. "Are you ok?"
"Yes, yes, I'm fine," I say and bite my lip. "I should really start looking where I'm going."
My friends secretly took pictures of us.
"It's the second time we've met in less than 10 minutes, maybe the universe wants to tell us something, don't you think?" he says and holds out his hand. "Pierre."
I hold out my hand and smile wide. "Y/N."
I turn my gaze to Lila and Erica, presenting them to Pierre as well.
"I hope you feel good in the paddock. So far, the world has been nice to you and your friends?"
"Yes, everything has been good so far. We've only been to Aston Martin and they've all been very nice to us. Except for a few people who don't look where they're going, we haven't had any unexpected events." I say and laugh.
Pierre starts laughing too.
"Yes, I will try to look after you from now on and avoid you. I don't want to be the reason you fall. Although, if something happens, I know the medical team and you don't need medical insurance here."
I asked Pierre if he wanted to take some pictures with me and he accepted immediately. At least that's what I can do after I've run into you twice already.
For the next few hours, Lila and Erica, and I walked from one Hospitality to another, looking for drivers. They were all very nice to us and agreed to pose with us.
When it was time to start qualifying, we went to the room provided by McLaren for guests to watch.
I followed Pierre's position in the standings, Lila followed Lando's position and Erica followed Max's position. All three of us breathed a sigh of relief when the three boys passed into Q3.
Lando will leave from the seventh position tomorrow.
Pierre will start from the fourth position.
Max will start from pole position.
The three of us went to the hotel, ready to rest well for the next day.
If the atmosphere for qualifying had seemed charged to me, then the atmosphere before the race could not be described.
Yesterday everyone was behaving nicely and they were smiling. Now everyone was running past everyone, there were many screams and many curses could be heard. And everyone was frowning, not a smile in sight.
We didn't see any drivers, so we headed to McLaren Hospitality to get comfortable for the race. I unwittingly was disappointed. I wanted to see Pierre before the race to wish him good luck.
Although I hadn't wished him good luck, Pierre was lucky. He finished the race in second place, behind Max Verstappen. I was very happy and I wanted to go and congratulate him as soon as possible.
I watched the award from the window, filming and taking pictures which I was sure I would cherish for a long time to come.
"Congratulations!" I scream when I see him and he looks at me. "It was a very good race, congratulations!"
"Thank you!" he says and smiles at me.
I asked my friends to take some pictures with the trophy and champagne and then Pierre left, being shouted by someone from the team.
"Stay here, I'd like to see you one more time before you have to leave."
I could die then and there when I heard his words. Pierre Gasly wanted to see me again.
It's just that it hasn't happened before. We stayed there for another two hours and Pierre could not be found. It was getting late and everyone was starting to leave, so we left.
Monza is the most important economic, industrial and administrative center of the Brianza sub-region, being the third-largest city in Lombardy, with a population of about 120,000 inhabitants. When people think of Monza, the first thing that comes to mind is the famous Formula 1 Grand Prix that is held here every year.
Although many may think that Milan eclipses this smaller city, Monza should not be dismissed, having an absolutely sublime historical architecture, such as the Cathedral and the Leoni Bridge, but also features the huge Parco di Monza and of course the famous Formula 1 Autodromo.
The historic center of Monza stretches over a large area and in this area, you can find most historical sites and a guided tour of the history of cities.
Three months have passed since the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Three months since I first saw Pierre Gasly.
Although I have pictures of the two of us, I can't help but regret the fact that I didn't see him then; I will probably never see him again.
The exams passed and to relax completely my father and I got tickets to the Italian Grand Prix.
What I didn't know was that my father had taken VIP tickets.
That means we're going to the paddock.
Does that mean I can meet Pierre?
I tried not to have too many hopes, in the end, there are thousands of people there, I can't meet him, can I?
I didn't meet him on Friday. It had been the two practice sessions, everyone was as relaxed as possible, my father took pictures with everyone he saw, but Pierre was nowhere to be seen.
On Saturday we were late and did not catch the practice, but we saw the qualifications. Pierre starts from the tenth position. To be honest, I didn't have high expectations for tomorrow's race for Pierre.
And man I was wrong about that.
The whole race I was speechless. I heard my father from lap 23 and to the end cursing the accident that took Charles Leclerc out of the race.
My eyes were only on car number 10. I had the impression that I was blinking only when the camera moved to another car. I forgot to breathe when I saw the overtaking he was doing.
But he won.
Pierre Gasly won in Monza. His first ever Formula One career win and it was my home race.
Before we went out in the paddock looking for Pierre, after the premiere, I wiped away the tears I didn't know I had.
It wasn't hard for me to find him. Where there were a lot of people screaming and chanting, he must have been there too.
And I was right. He is enjoying his first victory with the whole team. Everyone wanted to hug and congratulate him.
As if he noticed my presence among the hundreds of people who were there, Pierre looked at me. I noticed his face light up and he came towards me.
"Y/N!" he says and hugs me.
I'm sure my father was shocked somewhere in the back. I hadn't told him that I had met Pierre, but after this hug, I will definitely have to explain to him what the situation is.
"Congratulations!" I tell him and I smile broadly. "First victory! Wow!"
He shrugs nonchalantly.
"I was lucky."
I laugh and hit him playfully in the shoulder.
"With Hamilton being penalized? You would have overtaken him without that penalty."
He looked into my eyes.
"I haven't found you after the race in Brazil."
The fact that he remembered had taken me by surprise. I was sure he couldn't remember the fact that he had proposed to me to stay on the circuit so that he could see me one more time.
I was sure that the second he left, he forgot what I looked like and forgot my name.
But no. He still knew me. He still knew my name and knew we had to see each other.
"I haven't seen you there before and I left after about two hours, it was getting late."
"I'm sorry, the teamwork had taken longer than I initially anticipated. When I went to look for you, no one was there. Then I realized I didn't even have your phone number. I tried to look for you on Instagram, but do you know how many girls are there with your name?"
I laughed.
"Well, I could give my phone number to the race winner now, if he wants it, of course. Do you think he would accept it?" you ask laughing.
Pierre blushes and bites his lip.
"I'm sure he would accept."
I take out of my bag the notebook and pen I was carrying with me to receive the drivers' autographs and write my phone number. I hand him the sheet just as Pierre is being taken by some engineers to the garage to celebrate the victory.
I laugh and wave at him.
I was at home with my father, watching a boring movie on Netflix. I've been looking at the phone constantly since last night, waiting for a message from Pierre but I haven't received anything.
"Ugh, this movie is so boring," I say and take my phone off the table. "Let me look for a more interesting one."
That's when I receive a message from a number I didn't save. I received a picture.
It was the picture with the prize Pierre received.
"The winner of the race has received your number and is wondering if you are free to dine with him."
I bit my lip, unable to control the smile on my face.
"If the winner of the race wants to go out on a date with me, who am I to say no?"
"8 o'clock?"
"I'll send you the address right away."

more stats
based on the first 201 polls. note: any time I give two percentages with a slash between them (e.g., “18.5% / 11.3%”), the first percentage is the mean and the second is the median.
general observations
we’ve had 14 majority-yes results so far (7.0% of the total — a lower rate than the first set of stats)
highest result to date is Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, at 84.7% yes, the highest yes rate on either this or the fantasy blog by a significant margin.
the fundamental truth that everyone thinks their taste is universal and everyone is wrong remains.
the fantasy polls had more or less settled into their long-term pattern by the second round of stats, but I do not at all think that’s the case for the sci-fi polls — I’m excited to see what will happen after another hundred!
the mean yes result for all books is 16.5%, and the median yes result is 9.1%
publisher
big 5 imprints remain significantly more likely to have been read — 18.5% / 11.3% yes, vs. only 9.8% / 3.2% yes for other publishers. this difference is still slightly less pronounced than for the fantasy blog, which in this case I think may be partly due to the Vorkosigan polls, which I’ve been counting towards Baen (i.e., independent). but we’ll see how things continue to develop!
age demographic
we still don’t yet have enough data for a meaningful average for children’s books. the average yes rates for adult books are 16.9% / 8.6%, and for teen/YA books 24.3% / 10.8% (note that the mean is heavily skewed by The Hunger Games).
I stand by my observation in the previous round of stats that the yes rate for children’s books is likely to be significantly lower here than on the fantasy polls, but at this point half (4/8) of them are >40% yes. we’ll see how things develop — there still aren’t very many children’s books in the queue.
publication date
these continue to be weirdly evenly distributed; it seems like they may end up in a kind of bimodal distribution centered on the 2000s and the 1960s? but it still feels like it’s early days for this. the distribution of decades is still quite scattered:
1810s: 1 book
1860s: 2 books
1890s: 1 book
1910s: 1 book
1930s: 4 books
1940s: 3 books
1950s: 9 books
1960s: 18 books (average 19.6% / 9.8%)
1970s: 18 books (average 12.4% / 4.0%)
1980s: 26 books (average 12.9% / 9.5%)
1990s: 23 books (average 14.2% / 8.5%)
2000s: 14 books (average 20.7% / 7.5%)
2010s: 54 books (average 17.3% / 10.5%)
2020s: 27 books (average 15.7% / 7.1%
note the wildly low median for the ’70s — I’m not sure what’s going on there! also interesting that the mean for the ’80s has not changed since the previous round, despite a bunch of new books. also the 2000s have dramatically burst onto the scene!
race
unfortunately white authors have now surpassed authors of color here, though the difference is still much less pronounced than on the fantasy blog. books by white authors average 17.2% / 9.2% yes, while books by authors of color average 12.9% / 8.7% yes.
gender
the pattern from the previous round of stats continues: books by women average 21.5% / 10.0% yes, and books by men average 13.5% / 8.8% yes. (we still don’t have enough data for nonbinary / etc. authors.)
geography
North American writers continue to outpace everyone else:
North America: 17.7% / 11.4%
Europe: 11.6% / 4.4%
every other continent: 25.0% / 2.4% (the mean is being dramatically skewed by The Locked Tomb)
language
the average for books originally published in English remains substantially higher (17.5% / 10.3% yes) than the average for books not originally published in English (8.6% / 2.6% yes). we’re also just two books short of having enough French results to get a meaningful average.
preliminary stats
based on the first 114 polls.
general observations
we’ve had 9 majority-yes results so far (7.9% of the total)
highest result to date is Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth at a whopping 69.4% yes, followed closely by Martha Wells’s All Systems Red
there are some interesting similarities and some interesting differences between this and the fantasy blog
the fundamental truth that everyone thinks their taste is universal and everyone is wrong remains.
publisher
as with the fantasy polls, big 5 imprints are significantly more likely to have been read — 20.1% yes, vs. only 8.8% yes for other publishers. this difference is currently slightly less pronounced than for the fantasy polls, but also non-big 5 books are less than a quarter of the polls to date. I anticipate with more data it will probably align with the fantasy polls at around 5% yes.
age demographic
we don’t yet have enough data for a meaningful average for either teen/YA or children’s books. the average yes rate for adult books is 16.9%.
note that of the only 6 children’s book polls so far, 2 (33.3%) have been majority-yes. that said, I think that percentage is very unlikely to hold if/when more children’s book polls finish — there are plenty of children’s sci-fi books (I read many!), but there seem to be few that are widely read/beloved.
publication date
these are allllll over the place. the average publication date for the first ~250 submissions to this blog skews significantly older than the fantasy blog (1990 here vs. 2001 there), which initially, frankly, I kind of thought was people posturing by showing off that they’ve read The Classics. I now think it may reflect, rather, a divide between people who follow this blog (or see its posts reblogged) and people who submit books to this blog. the former are perhaps newer sci-fi, or newer adult sci-fi readers, who mainly read/have read things from the last decade; the latter are long-time sci-fi readers who grew up reading classics.
the result of this is a more scattered chart of decades, only some of which have enough submissions for a meaningful average:
1810s: 1 book
1860s: 2 books
1890s: 1 book
1930s: 3 books
1940s: 1 book
1950s: 3 books
1960s: 8 books
1970s: 11 books (average 9.6% yes)
1980s: 16 books (average 12.9% yes)
1990s: 13 books (average 12.4% yes)
2000s: 3 books (???????)
2010s: 35 books (average 20.1% yes)
2020s: 16 books (average 13.2% yes)
where’d the 2000s go???? funny little not-actually-bimodal distribution. as more polls come out I suspect this will probably settle into something a little more regular (maybe an actual bimodal distribution? lmao), and I expect it will continue to be skewed towards the 2010s.
race
this is a nice difference from the fantasy blog! while the number of submissions to this blog is even more overwhelmingly white than the fantasy blog (almost 86% here vs. about 82% there), the read rates are not actually that different: average 17.7% yes for books by white authors and 15.2% yes for books by authors of color.
gender
the gender demographics are the exact opposite here of the fantasy blog: where the fantasy blog’s submissions are about 60% women and about 35% men, the submissions here are about 35% women and about 60% men. and, for some reason, the averages are also reversed: books by men average 15.5% yes and books by women average 19.6% yes.
geography
North America (mainly the US) is at an average of 18.0% yes, and Europe (mainly the UK) is at an average of 14.9% yes. this is again the opposite of the fantasy polls — something about the relative dominance of American science fiction writers. there’s not yet enough data for meaningful statistics about other continents.
language
finally, as with the fantasy blog, the average for books originally published in English is substantially higher (18.5% yes) than the average for books not originally published in English (8.7% yes; 4.3% yes excluding Le Petit Prince). this is similar to the fantasy blog, and I imagine it will stay that way, although it’s possible Liu Cixin and some others will help keep the number a little higher.

Note
to anyone out there who got an audition, no matter the role, if this doesn’t make you uncomfortable or you can’t share for any reason (wether it’s for safety matters or production won’t allow), could you answer any of these questions (to any extend, yes/no is perfectly fine)
1- are you from north america? (united states or canada, usually for these type of things they don’t count mexico as north america)
2- are you older than 13?
3- do you look like what the fandom expects the trio to look like (white, black hair and green eyes for percy; white with a tan, blonde hair and gray eyes for annabeth; black, 3c up brown hair and brown eyes OR pale white, red hair and brown eyes for grover, all of them thin)
4- do you have an accent that’s not from north america or europe?
5- did they pay for you to go to LA for callback?
6- were there many people?
7- did you read for james bobin, denise chaisman, becky or rick himself?
8- this one i don’t see how can be answered by yes or no, but how much time in advance did they tell you about the audition before you had to go there?
9- did they tell you to go looking any certain way or give you anything when you get there to get into character?
10- was it really cool like the coolest thing you’ve ever done?
sorry if this seems invasive, and i perfectly understand if you don’t answer this.
I believe 1. anon means callback, not audition, and 2. some of the questions are only for those who already went to the callback. For those types of questions, keep in mind that they might not be able to disclose that information as they might have signed some NDAs related to the callback process.

THE A.T.O.M. CREATE A KAIJU CONTEST 3-D!!!
YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE SAFE! YOU THOUGHT THAT THE TIME OF MONSTERS WAS AT AN END! BUT YOU WERE WRONG, FOR NOW YOU MUST WITNESS…
THE A.T.O.M. CREATE A KAIJU CONTEST 3-D!!!
That’s right, it’s back! Celebrating the publication of The Atomic Time of Monsters Volume 2: Tyrantis Roams the Earth! (which in turn completes The Ballad of Tyrantis arc for this series), I’m holding another monster design jam. The third of such jams, in fact!
Like the first A.T.O.M. Create a Kaiju Contest, the aim of this contest is to create kaiju that would fit within the setting of my big kaiju story series, The Atomic Time of Monsters. Think of it as me letting you into my sandbox to play with my toys for a bit, or like you’re being put in the director’s chair of a new ATOM-verse kaiju movie. That means your entry does have to fit into ATOM’s world, which in turn means that yes, there are limitations to your creativity here. But limitations can be good sometimes - they can make us explore options we wouldn’t consider when given completely free rein to do what we want!
(also you don’t have to make a three dimensional image or anything, the title’s just a pun on how the third movie in a monster movie franchise will often be a 3-D film)
Read below the cut to learn the rules and whatnot:
THE RULES:
1. You are limited to one entry per person. Work hard and make your entry count!
2. Your kaiju must have some sort of description of its physical appearance and its personality - you can submit a drawing or a written description (or both!) for the physical appearance depending on what you’re most comfortable with. Using the same template/format as my official ATOM Kaiju Files (https://horrorflora.com/monster-menageries/atom-kaiju-files/) isn’t required, but it was cool when people did it in the last contest, so feel free to do so this time too!
3. The kaiju you create must specifically be created for this contest - no repurposing characters you made for other, wildly different stories. This is not “trick TT into drawing/canonizing my main OC” time.
4. The kaiju must fit the setting and aesthetics of ATOM. I’ll explain this in more detail down below.
5. The kaiju should add something meaningful to the world of ATOM. The more unique and interesting your kaiju is, the more likely you will win the contest.
6. Don’t make your kaiju too dependent on pre-existing ATOM characters - no “Tyrantis’s long lost evil brother who’s the strongest kaiju in the world.” These should be to Tyrantis’s story what War of the Gargantuas is to Godzilla’s movies – heroes (well, monsters) of another story in the same world.
THE REWARDS:
I will make pencil sketches of the top 5 entries in the contest.
I will then make fully rendered illustrations (lineart, colors, & shading) of the top three entries.
The winning entry will be made into a model ala the ones I’ve been making for ATOM’s core 50 monsters, which can then be shipped to the person who created it (should they be able to cover the shipping costs). That’s right, your kaiju could be brought to life in THREE GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOR DIMENSIONS! (Hey, we worked the gag title in to the prizes!)
THE DEADLINE: All entries must be submitted by July 3rd, 2021. You can submit it here on tumblr, via the horror flora e-mail, or any other channel you know how to reach me through. I’m in a lot of places.
THE GUIDELINES (TO HELP YOUR ENTRY FIT THE RULES AND WIN):
The smartest thing you could do if you want to win this contest is familiarize yourself with the world of ATOM by, y’know, reading all the material I’ve published on the subject. In addition to the many kaiju files that are free to read on horrorflora.com, there are now TWO, count ‘em, TWO novels in this series for you to peruse, both of which establish many of the rules of the setting as well as its general themes and tone! You can get them in either paperback or e-book formatting (I’d recommend the former over the latter since I lack the technology to make a really nice ebook, but if money is an object, the kindle version is only $1). Here’s the links again if you missed them:
Vol. 1: Tyrantis Walks Among Us!
Vol. 2: Tyrantis Roams the Earth!
However, since I know reading a bunch of stuff is, y’know, not something everyone is inclined to do, I’ll jot some good bullet points for you in an attempt to outline how ATOM works in a brief, easily digested way:
ATOM is an homage to the monster fiction of the 1950’s and 60’s (i.e. the Atomic Age), and is set in those two decades, albeit an alternate universe version of them where, y’know, monsters and space aliens exist. If you aren’t familiar with the monster fiction I’m referring to, there will be some reference material provided at the end of this post along with some recommendations for further research.
Kaiju/giant monsters in ATOM work under very specific rules. There’s a full description of those rules at this link, but here’s the jist:
ATOM Kaiju are created created by the radiation of a mineral called Yamaneon, which naturally converts harmful radiation into its own unique energy. In natural circumstances, it takes hundreds of years of exposure to Yamaneon radiation for a creature to become fully transform into a kaiju (luckily, Yamaneon radiation slows the aging process while speeding up the healing process). However, an explosive burst of energy - such as the geothermal and kinetic energy released by an earthquake, or the blast of a nuclear weapon - can speed up the process, turning a normal animal into a kaiju within a matter of seconds.
All ATOM kaiju can heal grievous wounds within minutes or even seconds, are supernaturally strong and durable, and can convert harmful radiation to harmless energy that they then feed off of. Kaiju do not have an equivalent of old age, and can theoretically live forever (though their violent lifestyle means that few do).
ATOM Kaiju generally don’t need to eat unless they are severely injured, getting most of the energy they need from solar or geothermal radiation - but many still have instincts that drive them to seek out food from time to time.
Most ATOM kaiju stand roughly 100 feet tall (depending on their body shape), i.e. smaller than the original 1954 Godzilla. There are exceptions to this rule - younger kaiju can be smaller, while exceedingly old kaiju can be significantly larger, but these are rare.
In general, ATOM kaiju are significantly more intelligent and emotionally complex than people expect animals to be, though most are incapable of speech or complex tool use. There’s a reason ATOM Kaiju Files have a “personality” section.
Most ATOM Kaiju are tooth and claw fighters - ranged weapons are a rarity in this setting.
While the terrestrial monsters in ATOM look strange, they are intended to fit within the taxonomy of animals in reality - reptiles, mammals, fish, arthropods, molluscs, etc.
ATOM’s mesozoic era was dominated by a fictional clade of crocodile-relatives called retrosaurs, which are based on the outdated paleoart that one would find in the 1950’s/60’s fiction - i.e. when dinosaurs were viewed as trail dragging lizards instead of strange birds. You can learn more about retrosaurs here (https://horrorflora.com/2016/11/15/atom-kaiju-file-bonus-a-guide-to-retrosaurs/).
Kaiju appear on every continent in ATOM, but certain areas tend to be dominated by different types.
North America is mainly besieged by retrosaur kaiju and giant arthropods.
East Asia is technically also mainly plagued by retrosaurs and big arthropods, though they tend to look more fantastical and mythic - and, often, oddly well suited to being portrayed by a person wearing a monster suit.
Russia is beset by prehistoric monsters that seem to come from the Cenozoic, particularly the Ice Age.
Western Europe is plagued by creatures that vaguely resemble creatures from myth, if they were also prehistoric. Dragon-y lizards, fiery birds, etc.
Towards the mid-way point of ATOM’s timeline, earth is invaded by a coalition of aliens from different solar systems called the Beyonder Alliance, and as a result a bunch of alien monsters can be found on earth.
Mars and Venus both host (or hosted in Mars’s case) animal life. The surviving Martians colonized Venus, and sent some of their kaiju guardians to earth to help us fend off the Beyonders (who are responsible for the destruction of Mars’s ecosystem). Martian and Venusian kaiju have specific anatomical quirks, which you can see by looking at these kaiju files:
Venusians:
https://horrorflora.com/2017/01/03/atom-kaiju-file-29-karamtor/
Martians:
https://horrorflora.com/2017/01/17/atom-kaiju-file-39-kemlasulla/
https://horrorflora.com/2017/01/17/atom-kaiju-file-40-podritak/
https://horrorflora.com/2017/01/17/atom-kaiju-file-41-sombarvot/
https://horrorflora.com/2017/01/17/atom-kaiju-file-38-ullawdra/
Giant robots exist in ATOM, but are big, bulky, and incredibly expensive. Fancy beam weapons also exist, but are similarly clunky - there are no sleek, elegant machines in ATOM.
Since the fiction ATOM takes inspiration from was made at a time when interplanetary travel was only just beginning to be possible, its scope is significantly smaller than modern sci-fi. Alternate universes/dimensions were pretty uncommon because the idea of alien planets still held a lot of wonder to it. So, as a general rule, don’t try to go farther than the one galaxy.
ATOM is a setting for stories that are focused on humanity learning to coexist with monsters, rather than humanity destroying them. A certain level of sympathy is put into almost every creature of its canon, even the ones that are meant to be villains.
REFERENCE MATERIAL
Here is a playlist of 1950′s monster movie trailers.
Here is some reference material from various monster comics of the 50′s and 60′s.
Good movies to track down to understand ATOM’s inspiration and tone include Ghidorah the 3 Headed Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Them!, The Black Scorpion, 20 Million Miles to Earth, Gamera, The Giant Claw, and The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra.
And here’s the intro cutscenes for all the different giant monsters in the PS2 videogame War of the Monsters.
