Extremely important question Arcane internet. If Jinx were a pony when do you think she'd get her cutie mark? After the explosion took everyone out, when she was found by Silco afterwards and fell into him, being placed into the lake that almost killed Silco, stabilizing the Gemstone, after killing Silco...? How'd you interpret her talent/destiny?

Just Say My Name!
Beetlejuice X Reader
Tumblr media
Hey guys, Kat here!
Trying to push myself to make stories, but it’s hard because I’m tired all the time, but I’m hoping it’ll boost up after the holidays! Although I might be a supervisor after the new year, so I’ll still have less time for anything - 7 -”
Anyway! I wanted to make another story about Bj because I love him so much and he’s a giant cutie! I realise I’ve only done stories of cuties so far, but I can’t help myself!
I hope you enjoy it! Sorry for spelling and grammar!
Words: 4224
Warning: Sexual harassment (from the boss), Boss is a creep, revenge (humiliation), lightly humour, jealousy, kissing, fingering, marking, biting, praising, riding, A lot of ‘ing’, gentle to rough sex, creampie, Beetlejuice being a cute trashman!
Enjoy!
You slowly walked back home after a long afternoon in work, your stomach turning on what happened with your boss. Your boss worked hard, and he was well known in the company, which sucked for you because he was very ‘touchy’. His hands would brush against your sides, he would sometimes rub your lower back, and you could have sworn he has tapped your behind when he has walked past you. He always had that smile which made you anxious, knowing that would keep your mouth shut. You wanted to tell someone, but his power got the best of you. You heard a girl left because she said she was being harassed, but they did nothing about it, so she went.
You were trying to find another job, but it was tough nowadays. You didn’t want to walk out because you needed the money, you were saving up to leave your parents and get your own place.
This fucking sucks.
“Oh, you’re home!” Your father smiled when you walked in, giving him a fake smile back. “Dinner will be ready soon.”
“Thanks, dad. I’m just going to get changed.” You said as you took off your shoes before going upstairs. You sigh as you closed the door, taking off your jacket and tossing it on the chair. You walked to your closet to grab another shirt, but an enormous dead man jump scares as he deeply roared. “...Hey, Beej.” You said simply as you leaned passed him to grab a shirt.
He shrunk to his standard form, a small pout on his lips. “You know, you’re not fun anymore, now that you don’t get scared.” He huffed as he crossed his arms.
A soft chuckle left your lips as you went to your bathroom to change. “Because you have jumped out of my closet so many times now, pick something unique.” You called out, coming out of the bathroom, wearing a clean shirt.
“Hey, don’t give me pointers...! I am the best at scaring people...!” You just let out a hum as a reply, looking over yourself in the mirror, Beetlejuice noticing your downer mood. “Hey, you okay? You seem...Off?” He asked as he tilted his head.
“Hm? Oh yeah, sorry. Just a rough day, you know?” You shrugged as you looked over at him. “And my belly is feeling weird.” You chuckled weakly, a small frown on the man's face.
“Well, okay...But remember, I can deal with them shitty customers. All you have to do is say my name.” He then grinned as he floated towards you. “I will make them scared of workers forever, baby...!”
“Thanks, Beej, But it’s nothing. I’ll be fine.” You said, gently tapping his face before walking off. “Come on, let’s go downstairs, dinner is nearly ready. You can eat my leftovers.”
“Oh, hell yeah...!”
~~~
A few days went by, and your mood was lowering, Beetlejuice noticed your sudden change of attitude, but every time he asked you, you just shrugged it off and said you were okay. It was making the poor man frustrated that you won’t say his name so that he can deal with the bastards.
“Hey, sir. The boxes are sorted at the back, can I go home?” You asked. You already stayed an extra thirty minutes.
“Can you help me with a few other things? If you stay until ten, then you can leave early tomorrow, is that okay?” Your boss said as he walked over, his hands gently rubbing your shoulders as he smiled. That smile which made you uncomfortable.
“Urm...Okay, sir.” You muttered, your eyes drifting off to the side, not wanting to look him in the eye. “As long as I can leave early tomorrow.”
“Great!”
~~~
You came home later that night, dropping your bag and shoes near the door, walking upstairs to your room. Tonight was shit, you did everyone's work and didn’t even have time for your second break because everyone was dragging you all over the place. And your boss touched you again, making you sick to your stomach.
You hated everything!
You opened your door to see Beej on your bed. “Hey, sweetness! You’re finally back!” He said, his face brightened when he saw you. “I was wondering where you were; I was hoping you didn’t die.” He chuckled as he floated over, pulling you into a hug but you pulled away. “Woah, hey. Something up?”
“I just - I’m just tired, Beej. I want to sleep.” You muttered, sounding tired and fed up. You noticed his hair was mixed with yellow and purple, making you frown. You wrote down what the colours meant like he was a type of mood ring. “Hey, don’t give me that. I’m sorry, it’s not you...I just...Another rough day again.” You said as you went to your bed, flopping down without taking your work clothes off.
“Oh, um...Okay, baby. I’ll leave you.” He grunted, his hair going entirely purple.
“Hey, Beej.” You muttered before he left. “Can... Can you rest with me?” You asked. You just needed some affection to make you feel better, and you knew Beetlejuice liked to cuddle. He nods as a reply, resting beside you on your bed, making you snuggled up closer to his cold body. “Mmm...Thank you.” You hummed as you closed your eyes, not noticing his hair had turned a few strands of pink.
~~~
You started early morning at work again, your boss telling you what to do. “After that, you can leave, okay?” He smiled down at you. “Hmm...You shouldn’t put your hair like that; I think you should move it away from your face.” He said, tucking your hair behind your ear, his touching making you shiver. “Better...!” He said before walking off.
“Ugh...” You moved your hair back to where it was, a frown growing on your face. “Creep.” But you jumped when you heard a low growl, turning around to see Beetlejuice floating near you. “B-Beetlejuice...!?”
“It’s him, right? The one who makes you upset...?” He grunted out, his hair turning a shade of purple and red. “Say my name...Just say it so that I can destroy him...!” He said in a severe tone, sending daggers to the man's head.
“Beej, please go...! Can we talk about this at home?” You whispered to him so your workers would overhear. “Now is not the time, please?” You begged him. You heard your boss call you, making you walk away from the demon. You, being this close to him, made his hair turn red.
~~~
It was finally time to leave, so excited to go early and spend time with your sister. Lydia wanted to go to the park and take pictures, hoping to find a dead bird or something...dead, at least. You hadn’t seen Beetlejuice when you told him to leave, but you could still feel him around you.
“Sir, everything is done. I’m going to head off now...!” You said, but your boss gave a small hiss.
“Yeaaaaah - I need you to stay until the end again.” He said, your jaw dropped by his words.
“Wh-...What? But I stayed behind last night for three hours, and I didn’t even get a break. I busted my ass off all day as well, and I can’t go? I made plans with my sister, I-” You stammered, your boss cutting you off.
“Hey, hey, I’m sorry, but it has to be done. We need you until seven again; my hands are tied.” He said as he put his hands up in defence. He walked over to you, his hand placed on your lower back, your eyes noticing the lights flickering above you. “But, hey...! You can leave early next week, okay? I promise.” He said with that smile you hated, feeling his hand tapping your butt before he walked off.
This was fucking shit!
You bust your ass day and night for him and this store, and he can’t even let you leave early!? “...No! No, this is bullshit...!” You said as you walked over to him, your boss giving you a serious look. “I have busted my ass for you and this is all I get!? A late shift out and your creepy hands all over me!?”
“_____, drop it.” He replied, his voice low. “You do what I say, now keep quiet...”
“No! I have another thing to say to you!” You said, your eyes staring at him.
“Beetlejuice...”
Your boss blinked when the lights flickered again before laughing at the strange word. “What? What the heck is that?” He questioned.
“Beetlejuice.”
“Stop your childish talk and get back to work...!” He snapped.
You didn’t. You felt your man behind you, practically floating over you with a wide grin on his face, his hair still crazy and pure red. “One more, baby! Just say. My. Name!”
“...Beetlejuice!”
You shouted; your boss’s eyes widen in horror when he saw the man appear over you in a green mist. “W-W-What is that!?”
Beetlejuice crackled as he did up his tie, cracking his neck side to side. “It’s showtime!”
Your boss looked down at himself, seeing beetles crawling up his legs, making him scream as he ran on the shop floor. “GET THEM OFF ME! GET THEM OFF ME!” He cried out as he kicked off his pants, customers and other works looking at him with shock and confusion. Nothing was on him, what was he talking about? Beetlejuice rolled up his sleeves and started to control his body, your boss shaking before having a bright smile on his face. He stripped off his shirt and started playing with his nipples. “Oh my, I am such a horny man! I harass my workers and treat them like shit! Oh goooood, I love touching young girls!”
You snickered as you watched from the back, looking through the small door window. You saw a mother covering her daughter's eyes as she gave your boss a disturbing look, an older man looking like he might have a heart attack and your workers started laughing at him. This was brilliant! That fucking creep deserves this! It sparked joy and excitement through your body, looking over at Beetlejuice who was still moving his arms. “Beej, this is amazing! Thank you, thank you!” You practically jumped to embrace him, placing a deep kiss on his lips, making the dead man freeze.
This made your boss stop moving, his face beat red with embarrassment and horror before running out of the store, screaming. That was the last time you saw his awful face.
You pulled away from the kiss to look up at him, both of you looking at each other with shocked, awe faces. His hands were on your waist to support you, but you didn’t feel uncomfortable, you liked his hands on you. They made you feel safe and protective, wanting nothing but to hold him longer.  “I...” You flustered, pulling away from the embrace. “Sorry about that...Thank you, Beej.” You muttered, barely making eye contact.
“I-ur...Sure, Sweetness.” He grunted, rubbing the back of his neck, his hair turning bright pink. It was the first time seeing him speechless. “I - I would do anything to make you happy.”
A smile appeared on your face as you still didn’t look at him, too shy to look see his face. “Hm... Thank you...Come on. Let’s go see Lydia.”
~~~
That afternoon, you met up with your sister and told her everything. Well, besides the kiss. She laughed but soon looked a bit bothered that you didn’t tell her that you were being harassed by your boss, knowing she would be beside you to help in any way. It made you happy that your younger sister wanted to stick up for you, your nerves calming down. You felt silly that you didn’t do it sooner, you had her and Beetlejuice beside you.
Speaking off Beetlejuice, he was reticent when you and your sister talked, his hair still having a few strands of pink. He floated close to both of you, noticing his eyes were watching over you. It seemed like he was thinking, knowing that since his eyes would drift away, his hair changing different colours.
When the sky started getting darker, the three of you walked back home together and had dinner with your parents. What surprised you were that Beej didn't eat the leftovers on anyone's plates, Lydia even raising a brow as his sudden change today, she especially noticed it in the park. Your sister asked you again if anything happened between you two, which you flusteredly denied.
It got to bedtime, everyone going to their rooms to rest, you slipping on your pyjamas before you got into bed. Sadly, you couldn’t sleep. You stayed curled up in bed with your eyes open, only looking at the creases on the bedsheets and sometimes glancing at the night sky through the window. Your heart was ramming in your chest, making you grumble as you hugged the blankets more. “Hmm-Fuck” Your body felt uncomfortable under the tangled sheets, tossing it off your body as you sat up.
You wanted, no, you needed - “Beetlejuice.”
Your eyes drifted up to see the dead man floating in front of you when you called his name, his hair pink with a hint of orange on the ends. Was he a bit confused as to why you called him? You went onto your knees in front of him, gently cupping his cheeks to bring him into a kiss, feeling his body stiffen under your touch. “Mm... Beej.” You muttered, grabbing his hand to guide it to your chest, making him feel your heart beating.
Beetlejuice got the picture, his hair turning pink as he looked over you. “Baby...I - Fuck.” His confidence came back, pulling you into another kiss as he rested you back on the bed, his body fitting perfectly against you. You felt his hand holding your waist while his other was placed next to your head to keep himself steady. Your hands were against his chest as you kissed but slowly ran up to go through his hair, hearing the boy hum. Oh, Beej loved you touching his hair, he craved it.
You felt Beetlejuice’s little fang gently bit your bottom lip, his bright, green eyes watching you accept his offer, waiting for your permission to continue. You weakly smiled up at him, pulling him down for another kiss, with your tongues tangled in lustful pleasure. You loved his weight on top of you. His body may be cold, but your body felt on fire, wondering if he could smell your excitement between your legs. You knew he had an excellent keen for smelling things from miles away. You bucked your pelvis into him, hearing Beej hitch by the sudden movement but he started grinding himself into you as well, feeling his hardening cock against your thigh.
Beej forgot that you needed air, pulling away from the heated kiss. “Baby...Do you?” He raised a brow at your flustered form, a shiver running up your spine as you felt his cold fingertips seeping a bit under your shirt, waiting for your reply. He was an impatient man, wanting nothing but to ravish you in kisses and marks, but he held himself back for you.
“Yes. I’ve wanted this for a while.” You breathed out, seeing the demon grinning down at you. “Same, baby.” He replied before deeply kissing you again, his hand running along your stomach, to your chest to palm them with his rough hand. His other run up your thigh, letting out a whimper by his touch.
“Mmm...I have thought about this for so long; I thought my head was going to burst soon.” He muttered, his lips running along your neck to kiss and nibble. “Fuck, sweetheart, do you know what you do to me?” He growled low, your lower belly heating by his words and touch. His hands pulled away to unbutton your shirt, his eyes awing at your body, looking like a dessert he was ready to devour. “Damn. You’re fucking gorgeous.” He purred out, chuckling when he saw you stir underneath him. “No need to be flustered. Just relax and let me taste you.”
He kissed you again, his hand sliding down your stomach and sneaked under the waistband of your pyjama pants, slipping in your underwear to press his finger on your clit. Your hips moved on their own as he touched you, moaning against his lips as he continued. His middle finger rubbed against your wet slit before slipping inside you, Beetlejuice letting out a low purr. “Shit, baby. You’re so wet. I could smell you but fuck-” He chuckled. His finger moved in and out of your pussy, moaning when his finger curled to rub your slick walls, seeing the wide grin on his lips.
He looked like the alpha, waiting for his meat to weaken until he attacked. You were fascinated by his eyes practically glowing in the dark bedroom. “That’s it, sweetheart...Keep moaning for me. Every lovely moan is for me.” He hummed, placing kisses on your neck which slid down to your chest. He sucked at your chest and collar bone, wanting to leave his mark on you, so people knew you were taken.
It made him enraged that a man touched you. He wanted to rip his head off that he made you so upset, no one touches his breather! You both knew you needed to talk about what happens after, a demon and breather together, but at the moment, you both didn’t give a shit. He just wanted to make you moan and cry for him. He didn’t care how; hands, teeth, mouth, cock, he just wanted you to quiver beneath him.
“B-Beej - Mmm...!” You moaned when his tongue ran along your nipple before sucking on it, feeling his fang lightly dig into your skin. “Nnh!” You gasped when he slipped in a second finger, pumping them inside until your juices were covering his fingers and your underwear, embarrassed how wet you got for him. “Oh god, Beej...! I-It’s so good.” You shuttered, feeling his smile against your skin. “Ah!” He moved over to your other nipple to give it some attention as well.
Your body stirred underneath his more solid form, opening your legs more for him to quicken his pace, letting out cries and moaning his name. His thumb pressed on your clit, making you jolt by his sudden touch to your sensitive area. “Ah-! B-Beej, please. I...I need-!” You gripped onto his shirt when he curled his fingers inside you. “I need you...!”
“Shit, Sweetheart. Saying stuff like that gets me putty.” He purred against your chest before pulling away, sighing when he pulled his fingers out from your soaked pussy. He grinned as his fingers glistened with your juices, now cleaning them with his tongue. “Mmm - Oh god/Satan! You taste so good...!” He growled as he licked his fingers. “I can eat you out for hours, but you sound like you need me.” He saw you moved your body up, unbuttoning his shirt to slide it off. “Oh-” He suddenly got a bit anxious when you started to strip him of his clothing.
You saw his reaction, a small smile on your face as you kissed along his chest to his belly. “You’re so handsome. I get to have you all to myself.” You purred out, seeing his hair turning pink once again. Beetlejuice didn’t think you would like his little belly and hairs which scattered across his body. But hearing your comment made his chest swell which he never thought could happen. You slipped off your pants and underwear, so both of you were bare. “Mmm...” You leaned forward to kiss along his neck, a shiver running up his spine, sighing from the sweet attention.
You got his full attention when you rub yourself against his thick shaft, groaning when his tip brushed against your slit. “Oh, baby. Please, don’t tease this old guy.” He grunted out, his hand gently squeezing your hip for you to lower yourself. “I need my good girl.”
“Good girl, huh?” You chuckled, both of you hummed when his tip slipped in. “O-Okay...If I wait any more time, I’ll break.” You breathed out, lowering yourself down his shaft, moaning when you’re fully sat on his lap. “Mm! Beej...!”
“_____...Oh, baby - Fuck, yes.” Beetlejuice moaned when he was fully inside, feeling your pussy pulse around his shaft. “You feel amazing...Better then, I imagined.” He purred, pressing you against his body as he kissed you. You ran your fingers through his tangled hair, slowly raising and lowering your hips to feel every inch inside your slick cunt. His nails lightly dug into your hips as you started to ride him, moaning when his sensitive tip grazed your walls.
“Mm... Beej, fuck - K-Keep bucking your hips into me.” You moaned out, feeling him kiss your neck again. “Yes, yes...Oh, Beetlejuice. You feel so good...I need you.” You lightly gripped onto his hair when you moved your hips a bit faster, the demon groaning against your neck.
“You have me, baby, you fucking have me.” He bit your collar bone, leaving new marks on you. “Keep riding me, and I’ll kneel to everything you tell me to do. Ah - shit. You’re beautiful, Sweetheart.” He praised you, moving you down to make you go deeper, your ass slapping against his thick thighs.
You both held each other in the pleasuring embrace, groaning and moaning against each other's skin, Beetlejuice's body heating up because of you. He felt your nails run down his back, his eyes nearly rolling to the back of his head, hoping you leave marks on him. “Baby...Can - Can you say my name?” He breathed out, looking up at your flustered face. “My first name...Please, I’m begging you.”
You kissed him, slipping out a moan after. “Lawrence...You feel amazing, L-Lawrence. I’m yours...” You muttered, seeing his eyes spark. “-Ah!” He pinned you to the bed, his body on top of you and his hands holding up your thighs up. “B-Bee-Fuck!” You let out a cry when he thrusts into you, feeling him go deeper in this position.
“_____, Sweetheart - Ngh!” Beetlejuice’s mind went blank as he pounded into you, his fingers digging into your thighs as he held them up. His hips slapped against yours as he fucked your pussy, his rough thrusting made you hold the bed as the other gripped his arm. “You feel amazing, hah. You’re clamping around me.” He grunted out, biting his bottom lip.
“B-Beej! Fuck, you’re so deep!” You breathed heavily as he continued. Your breathing increased by the rough pleasure, hearing the lewd wet sounds between you two as his cock slipped in and out of your pussy. Oh fuck, the thought just made your walls clamp him more. “A-Anymore and I’ll-!”
“I know, baby. I want you to.” His dilated eyes looked down at you, close to coming at how hot you looked underneath him. “Ah, I am too. I want you to come first.” His hand went down and rubbed your clit, his rough fingers making you jolt with pleasure. “Please, baby, please. I want to watch you come on my dick.” He said, nearly sounding like a whine. He watched your body shutter underneath him, your hips bucking into him. “Come on...Come for me...!”
“B-Beetlejuice! Yes, yes!” Your moaning increased in volume when your lower stomach tightened, finally at your release. “Ah!”“_____!” The dead man couldn’t hold himself any longer when your walls milked him, taking a deep thrust inside as he came, his cum filling up your womb. “Fucking shit!” He moved his hips until he relaxed from his climax, his pumping making his cum leak out of your sensitive pussy. “Yes, baby...Fuck. You did so...” Beej sighs softly, resting his forehead on yours. “I loved it.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck, giving his lips a peck. “Mm, I did too.” You let out a weak giggle, your legs feeling like jelly as they shook. “That was - That was intense.” You hummed when Beej pulled out, seeing his cum leaking out of you. He cuddled up to your heated body, hugging your waist. “Thank you...”
“Heh, no need to thank me. I should be thanking you, baby.” He chuckled as his hand gently rubbed your back. “I’ve wanted to do that for ages, but - ur...I didn’t think you’d be into an old dead guy like me.” He grumbled, having a nervous smile on his lips.
“You’re not that old. Well, you don’t look five hundred years old anyway.” You smiled, your hand playing with his hair on his chest. “I like you, Beetlejuice. But you’re so cool, and I’m dull compared to you.”
“You!?” He huffed. “Never, baby. You’re amazing and sexy as hell/heaven!” He kissed you again. “But I don’t want any guy touching you, never.”
You smiled, playing with his hair when it had different coloured streaks. “Never...I only want you, Lawrence.”
~~~
“Now that we’re a couple, can you marry me!?”
“Haha, yeah-Give it a couple of years, big guy.”
He pouted.

The Jenny Lewis Experience
The New York Times July 24, 2014
A version of this article appears in print on July 27, 2014, Page 18 of the Sunday Magazine with the headline: The Jenny Lewis Experience.
By Jeff Himmelman
Tumblr media
“They’d put the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on,” Jenny Lewis said. We were sitting in a restaurant in Laurel Canyon, not far from her home, and she was describing her early childhood with parents who made their living performing as an itinerant Sonny-and-Cher-style lounge act called Love’s Way. “We lived in hotels,” she said. “My sister and I, they would just keep us in the hotel room, and they’d go down and play.” When Lewis was born in 1976, her parents were doing a stand at the Sands. They split up when she was 3, and her mother — herself the daughter of a dancer and a vaudeville performer — took Jenny and her sister to Van Nuys, in the San Fernando Valley, where she worked as a waitress and struggled to keep her family afloat. “We were on welfare,” Lewis said, before describing the day their fortunes changed, when an agent picked young Jenny out of a crowd at her preschool. “I think mostly because I was a redhead,” she said. “And I was a weird little kid, a weird little tomboy.”
She soon landed her first commercial, for Jell-O, and came under the wing of Iris Burton, an eminent children’s agent who represented River and Joaquin Phoenix and Fred Savage. Lewis started working steadily in commercials, television (“The Golden Girls,” “Growing Pains,” “Mr. Belvedere”) and film (“The Wizard,” “Troop Beverly Hills,” “Pleasantville”), living the surreal and somewhat communal life of a child star in the ‘80s. She spent her days being tutored on set and her evenings at places like Alphy’s Soda Pop Club in Hollywood, which catered exclusively to kids in the industry. At a party there when Lewis was 10, the actor Corey Haim handed her a cassette tape with Run-D.M.C. on one side and the Beastie Boys on the other. “There have been a couple of cassette tapes that have changed my life,” she said, “and that was the first one” — the tape that got her hooked on hip-hop, which eventually led her to songwriting.
Tumblr media
I asked Lewis when she first fully realized the role she played in her family, the depth of their dependence on her. “Eight years old,” she said. “I remember the moment. That’s a pretty big thing for a kid to realize. And I remember the power in that.” By the time she was 14 or 15, with nobody to answer to, she could be as wild as she liked as long as she showed up to work and hit her marks. “I was up for it, honestly,” she said. “I loved the work and I loved the people, and it kind of prepped me for what I do now.”
What Lewis does now, the music she makes, is hard to characterize. She is often compared with Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris, and there is a kind of timelessness to the way she writes and sings. But the throwback stuff doesn’t quite capture her. Among some music fans — including many other well-known musicians — Lewis is considered a kind of indie goddess, a stylish performer who defies genre and salts her songs with a sly and off-kilter intelligence. Her first band, Rilo Kiley, signed a major-label deal with Warner Bros. Records in 2005; her first side project, the Postal Service, led by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, sold more than a million copies of its debut; and she has released two well-received solo records since then. Next week, she will release a third, “The Voyager,” her first solo effort in six years. It has been a battle to get it out. Among other things, she has dealt with the death of her father, writer’s block and bouts of insomnia so severe and debilitating that she said they left her almost unable to function for nearly two years.
You’d never guess that from meeting her, though. She talks like a true child of L.A. — the “bro"s and “dude"s flow freely, without affectation — and her go-to traveling costume is a vintage Adidas track suit, Adidas shell-top sneakers and, on the day I first met her, hot-pink lipstick and oversize sunglasses. She lives with her longtime boyfriend and collaborator, the musician Johnathan Rice, up a long canyon road in the hills that separate the San Fernando Valley from downtown Los Angeles. Her house (called “Mint Chip” for its brown-and-light-green exterior) is set into the hillside, looking out over a ravine. There is a rehearsal space with a drum kit, a P.A. and some vintage gear, an old piano in the living room and a vinyl edition of James Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James” propped up beside the fireplace. Beyond the small pool in the back yard there’s a windowed gazebo that Rice uses as his songwriting space. Whatever you are imagining of the California light and the laid-back lifestyle: yes.
Tumblr media
Historically, nearby Laurel Canyon has been synonymous with a certain kind of lush ‘60s acoustic-and-multipart-harmony sound, but Lewis’s musical roots spring from the ‘90s and the smart indie rock of Elliott Smith and Pavement. When she was 20 or so, her acting career wasn’t where she wanted it to be, and she saw that she needed to make a change. “I was the best friend,” she said. “I was the friend, forever. I wanted the big, juicy roles, and they didn’t come to me.” (She read for the part of Bunny in the Coen brothers’ film “The Big Lebowski,” for one, but didn’t get it.) She had known Blake Sennett, another former child actor, since she was 17, and they began writing together and eventually formed Rilo Kiley.
She and Sennett dated and broke up and kept playing together. The relationship was always fraught (Gibbard remembers Lewis screaming at Sennett over the phone during the first Postal Service tour), but Lewis said it gave her the confidence she needed to become a real songwriter. “Through my partnership with Blake, I found a voice within myself that I didn’t know I had,” she said. “It sounds kind of cheesy, but I figured out who I was.” From the first lines of the first song on Rilo Kiley’s debut record, a track called “Go Ahead,” you can hear the DNA of the musician Lewis has become nearly 15 years later — a floating, distinct voice, an unpredictable melody, a wryly subverted rhyme.
The link between songwriting and autobiography is a tantalizing but tenuous one, and Lewis prefers to preserve as much mystery as she can. But she affirms that she has never written anything more personal than “Better Son/Daughter,” one of the strongest tracks off Rilo Kiley’s second record, “The Execution of All Things.” The song is about waking up in the morning and being unable to open your eyes or get out of bed: “And your mother’s still calling you, insane and high/Swearing it’s different this time.” Eventually it opens into an anthem of wounded fortitude, the kind you can imagine cars full of young women screaming along to. The actress Anne Hathaway, one of Lewis’s close friends, told me that she still turns to that song whenever she’s struggling. “It’s become almost like a prayer,” she said.
Outside whatever veiled references she makes in her music, Lewis doesn’t talk much about her mother. She acknowledged that it was a “difficult relationship” and that she didn’t have a “traditional upbringing,” but that was about it. At one point, I referred to a report in The Boston Globe in 1992, when Lewis was 16, noting that she owned a house in Sherman Oaks and a townhouse in North Hollywood. “We lost all of that,” she said, with a blankness I hadn’t seen from her before. I asked her why. “We just lost ‘em,” she said. “I achieved a lot as a child, I supported my family, but in the end we lost it all.”
In 2004, Rilo Kiley toured with Coldplay, but Lewis was still scraping by, living in a small apartment in Silver Lake with an Iranian rockabilly musician she found on Craigslist. In her bedroom, when she wasn’t on tour, she wrote the songs that would become “Rabbit Fur Coat,” her first solo record. The idea for it came from Conor Oberst, the songwriter (also known as the frontman of Bright Eyes) who helped form Saddle Creek Records, which had put out “The Execution of All Things.” “I encouraged her,” Oberst told me. “You know, why don’t you step away from this thing that is obviously causing you a lot of distress and make a record on your own?” Sennett had already made a solo record, which upset Lewis. “I was so jealous if someone else got Blake’s musical attention,” she told me. “I was shattered by it.” She made “Rabbit Fur Coat,” she said, in part to prove that “I can do it too on my own — I don’t need you.”
Tumblr media
The songs on “Rabbit Fur Coat” are ethereal and haunted, rooted in deep Southern and gospel-inflected melodic traditions. On the record’s title track, Lewis’s lyrics again invite comparison with her family life:
Let’s move ahead 20 years, shall we? She was waitressing on welfare, we were living in the valley A lady says to my ma, “You treat your girl as your spouse You can live in a mansion house.”
And so we did, and I became a hundred-thousand-dollar kid . . . But I’m not bitter about it I’ve packed up my things and let them have at it And the fortune faded, as fortunes often do And so did that mansion house
Where my ma is now, I don’t know She was living in her car, I was living on the road And I hear she’s putting stuff up her nose . . .
After the record was done, Lewis went on tour with Rilo Kiley. When the band played the Showbox in Seattle in 2005, Gibbard picked her up after sound check. They’d become friends during the Postal Service tour a few years earlier. As they drove around in Gibbard’s car, Lewis played the new songs for him. “I just remember, all hyperbole aside, being completely blown away,” Gibbard said. “It was undoubtedly the best thing that she had done.” The press shared Gibbard’s reaction, and Lewis got more attention on her own than Rilo Kiley had ever gotten as a band. “Everything was so easy for the first time,” she said. “It just unfolded so naturally. And then going out on the road and touring was the most fun I’ve ever had on tour. There was no tension for the first time.” Rilo Kiley would put out one more record, but it soon became clear that it would be their last.
“I want to show you something,” Lewis said. We were talking in her kitchen about her second solo release, “Acid Tongue,” which she recorded over three weeks in 2008 at the legendary Sound City Studios in Van Nuys. The record had a bunch of special guests on it — Elvis Costello, Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes — but the most meaningful one was Lewis’s dad, who died in 2010. In the living room, she pointed out a glass vitrine on top of the piano that held one of her father’s chromatic bass harmonicas. Before the “Acid Tongue” sessions, she hadn’t spoken to her father in years, but she felt comfortable enough with the musical family she had created around her — Rilo Kiley’s drummer, Jason Boesel; Johnathan Rice; some other musicians from the Laurel Canyon set — that she thought she could handle having him around. He played on the track “Jack Killed Mom,” and the reunion helped Lewis forgive him for leaving the family all those years ago. “He was playing lounges in Alaska,” Lewis said of when she tracked him down and asked him to play on the album. “That’s why I never saw him. It was not a malicious thing. My dad was a savant. He never drove a car, he never had a bank account,” she said. “I don’t even know if he realized that he wasn’t around, you know? I think he was just playing his gigs, trying to make a living.”
“Acid Tongue” was also a step toward recording everything all at once, live, to an analog tape machine — instead of in pieces to a computer. It’s a process that Lewis has developed a devotion to, and one that the songwriter and producer Ryan Adams would push to an extreme on “The Voyager.” (After “Acid Tongue,” Lewis and Rice released “I’m Having Fun Now” in 2010, an underrated duo record that failed to get the kind of traction they hoped for.) For the last few years, Lewis had been sitting on many of the songs that would make up “The Voyager,” battling insomnia and struggling to get them down. She ran into Adams in Los Angeles and told him she had some songs she was working on, and he invited her to come by his studio, Pax-Am, on the Sunset Strip. She played a few of the tunes for him on her acoustic guitar.
‘My dad was a savant,’ Lewis said. ‘He never drove a car, he never had a bank account. I don’t even know if he realized that he wasn’t around, you know?’
“My initial impression was there were some really minimal but necessary things that had to happen,” Adams told me. “I could tell that she had sat with them a little too long.” (Lewis agrees: “I was like: ‘Dude, go for it. Help me.’ ”) On the first song that they worked on together, “She’s Not Me,” they changed the key to relax Lewis’s voice, and then Adams and his production partner, Mike Viola, strapped on electric guitars and rolled through the full song, three times, with Lewis playing and singing live with a backing band. Adams pronounced the track finished for the time being and said they would move on, without even listening back to what they’d done. “For Jenny, revisionism wouldn’t have worked,” Adams said. “The version she would play on the couch in the control room, we would just stand there, like, ‘Wow, this is classic songwriting.’ Every time. So that was sort of my mission. How do we get an ‘unmind’ vibe here and then go back later and look at these beautiful raw takes and just splash a little bit of watercolor on them.” Lewis ended up recording the bulk of the record with Adams over 10 days. (She worked on the single, “Just One of the Guys,” separately with Beck before she and Adams went into the studio together.)
“The Voyager” is an older and more direct record than her previous two. Her characters are still drinking and doing blow and cheating on each other, but there is a kind of weariness to it all. One line in particular has caught the early attention of some of her many female fans, during the bridge of “Just One of the Guys”: “There’s only one difference between you and me/When I look at myself all I can see/I’m just another lady without a baby.” She has been hesitant to acknowledge what that line specifically means to her. “I wanted to communicate some very basic things,” she told me, without saying what they were. She was already starting to regret having talked about some of her other struggles while making the record, including open discussion of the insomnia that plagued her. “Now everyone’s asking me about insomnia, which I’m terrified is going to happen to me again,” she said. “You can’t think about it too much, and everyone’s asking me about it, and I’m like, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine.’ But, [expletive], am I not going to get to sleep again?” You could hear the fear in her voice. “It’s my fault for putting it out there,” she said.
The video for “Just One of the Guys,” which got more than a million views in its first 24 hours online, was made with the actresses (and Lewis’s friends) Anne Hathaway, Brie Larson, Kristen Stewart and Tennessee Thomas. It’s an entertaining video, part Robert Palmer, part Beastie Boys, with the women spending half the time playing a sleek female backing band and then switching into male roles, clowning around in Lewis-inspired Adidas track suits and fake mustaches. Lewis, as herself, holds up a positive pregnancy test, to which Lewis-in-drag-and-fake-goatee responds, “It’s not [expletive] mine.” When she gets to the “just another lady without a baby” line, she smiles at the camera and then dances. It’s a house of mirrors, a romp through emotionally treacherous terrain.
When I visited Lewis in June, she and Rice (she calls him “Rico”) showed me an early cut of the video in the bedroom of their house, with Lewis calling out “bra shot” whenever we caught a glimpse of her cleavage. Driving down the hill toward dinner later, we got to talking, if somewhat obliquely, about the expectations of her female fans and the sexuality that is inseparable from who she is and the music she makes. She didn’t like to talk about feminism, she said, and in particular the trend of women criticizing one another for not being feminist enough: “What does it matter what I think of Lana Del Rey?” In the months before the release of “The Voyager,” Lewis has taken to wearing airbrushed suits for her live shows, rather than the sexier get-ups she used to wear onstage; she has said she feels “androgynous” these days and wants her costume to reflect that. But not always. As we made our way down the ravine, she told a story about the day President Obama came to visit a compound not far from Mint Chip. She wanted to go out for a run, but a Secret Service member stopped her and told her she needed an ID if she wanted to get back through the security cordon. “I was like, ‘Dude, I’m wearing short shorts,’ ” Lewis said. " ‘You’ll remember me.’ ”
After recording and touring mostly with men in the early days, Lewis now consistently seeks out women for her band and even tried to put together an all-female crew for the “Just One of the Guys” video, which she also directed. She said her desire to work largely with women was a response to the dissolution of her relationship with her mom. “The more I surround myself with women, the easier it is to reconcile my past in a way.” It seems to be serving a kind of psychic need, to replace the female relationship that once dominated her life with a kind of surrogate family of her choosing, a family that has stood behind her through the struggles of the last few years.
“I’m happy to see her making records,” Beck told me. “I just feel like music needs her. It needs someone doing what she’s doing. She’s got a special voice, as a writer, and then as a musician. She’s this great combination of so many things.” Conor Oberst shares that view, describing Lewis as one of the most important songwriters and performers in contemporary music. “Go see her play,” Oberst said. “Because we should all feel lucky to be around while she’s doing her magic.”
On a night in early June, at a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club in Washington, Lewis had her magic all lined up and ready to go. Backstage, she was relaxed, joking with her band and casually doing her makeup in the mirror on the wall. Just before show time, one band member disappeared, but Lewis was unperturbed. “It’s O.K.,” she said with a smile when he showed up, apologizing, just as they were about to go on. “You made it!” She took a sip of red wine out of a plastic cup and then walked up the steps to the stage.
‘I just feel like music needs her,’ Beck said. ‘It needs someone doing what she’s doing. She’s got a special voice, as a writer, and then as a musician.’
To watch Lewis perform live is to understand what Beck and Oberst and other musicians admire in her. “She turns into this other person on stage,” Gibbard said, “this unbelievably powerful performer” — and it’s true. Lewis is both a natural and a pro. Throughout the night, she had big middle-aged guys and teenage girls — “teeny little chickens,” as she called them later — singing along to every word. During the encore, Lewis sang the ballad “Acid Tongue” accompanied only by her acoustic guitar and the rest of her band grouped around a microphone behind her. “To be lonely is a habit,” Lewis sang, her voice ringing out in the near-silent room, “like smoking or taking drugs, and I’ve quit them both. . . . " The audience and her band belted along with her as she finished the line: “But man was it rough.”
It was one of those lovely moments you hope for in live music, when everything in the room connects. But it was also a kind of emblem of where Lewis has been and of where she is now. She has overcome all kinds of obstacles to get here, often with great style, but it hasn’t always been pretty. Whatever demons stole her sleep for these last few years, they’ve surely been with her forever, in one form or another. But they are also what gives such depth and soul to what she does. “I’m not looking for a cure,” Lewis sang, and as she stood in the spotlight at the 9:30 Club, nobody there would have thought she needed one.

The Reason – Horatio X Dani (MC) – #LoveHacks Fanfic
SUMMARY: During a walk, Horatio and Dani (MC) talk about their love lives and can’t hide their feelings anymore.
PAIRING: Horatio X Dani (MC)
RATING: Everyone
WORDS: 1.734
NOTE: Hey! Here’s my entry for ChoicesCreates65 – Non-Canon Couples! When I saw the theme I immediately thought about #LoveHacks and how I wanted Horatio as a LI, but writing it was a bit difficult because I had to deny MC and Mark (who I absolutely love and miss so much) together! So I renamed my MC and used the default name, Dani, and things got easier LOL. I have to say that I really enjoyed writing about this pairing and, who knows, maybe I might write about them again!  English isn’t my native language. I write to practice and learn, so please sorry any mistakes. I hope you like it, and if you do, I’d appreciate if you like/comment/reblog! Tagging @clonedhayden. And also @alanakusumastan who I’m pretty sure is anxious for it!
Tumblr media
The Double Tap was about to close for that day. Horatio sent Parker home early and said he could handle things there. The costumers had already gone and he had already set the chairs on the tables. He was outside, lowering the bar door when suddenly someone stopped behind him.
               _Hi, Horatio! – he gasped at the shock, and turned around.
               _Oh, hey, Dani – she was smiling and looking at him.
               _Sorry for scare you, but you were so distracted…
               _No problem, it’s always good to see you – he smiled to her. Horatio still remembered when he saw Dani for the first time, in that same place. He was amazed by her beauty and her outgoing personality. But then he realized she was the famous Dani whom Mark always talked about. The college best friend for whom he probably had feelings. So she was unavailable for him – but you came at a bad time, I just closed the bar.
               _Actually, I didn’t come here for one of your incredible drinks – Dani loved how Horatio worked with the drinks, putting the heart and the passion from inside him, or from someone else, that he could master. She loved how he always knew the right kind of drink every costumer needed – I came here to invite you for a walk with me. Just the two of us.
               _A walk? – he raised an eyebrow. That would be the first time they would hang out just the two of them. Was she saying what he thought she was saying? No, she never demonstrated it before – where?
               _I don’t know, let’s just walk for a while, and then I’ll leave you at home.
               _No way. I’ll leave you at home. A gentleman never could allow a lady to walk alone in a big city like this – they giggled and he thought how her laugh was cute – so, lead the way, Dani.
               _Okay – as they started walking, she linked her arm with his and he was startled again. Often, her intensity could crash with his calm – sometimes Mark and I used to walk like this in college.
               _You must miss this.
               _A lot. I used to joke we’re siblings from different moms. Until today he sees me as a sister.
               _And…you see him like that too?
               _Yes. Sometimes I thought it could be more than a strong friendship, he confessed me he felt the same, but we’re cool with being just BFFs, and nothing more – Horatio couldn’t be hypocritical and say he didn’t like to hear that. And he could understand Mark. Dani was the kind of girl everyone likes to be close. Gorgeous, intelligent, sincere, she had a fantastic ability to charm everyone around her. So falling in love with her wasn’t difficult, he could tell. Horatio just realized he was smiling to himself when he noticed Dani gazing at him and smiling too.
               _So, uh…I haven’t congratulated you yet for winning that award – he dropped the subject before it got worse.
               _Oh, thanks, Horatio! That night was awesome…I was nervous with this award and a decision I had to make, but everything went well.
               _A decision, huh? I don’t know why, but I felt a halo of mystery – he winked and she laughed – something that bothered your heart for a while but now you’re happy with your decision – Dani loved his sensibility. Based on their talks so far, she felt he could read her better than herself sometimes.
               _And I bet you could make a drink based on it.
               _Sounds like a challenge, Dani – he beamed – if you tell me what it was, who knows…
               _Well, it was related to my love life – why she was so determined to talk about it? – I had three potential dates for that night, and I could go steady with one of them. But Mark’s like a brother to me, Leah’s a great friend and an incredible co-worker, and Ben’s a cutie, but I never could see him as more than a friend, you know – Horatio listened carefully. He also noticed how Leah and Ben looked at Dani. She had a bunch of admirers, and he was just one more.
               _So, you had three people wanting you that night, and you chose to be single?
               _Yeah, I know it’s crazy, but I had to be honest with myself and them, of course.
               _I don’t think it’s crazy. Love is an enigmatic strength, Dani. Sometimes you have a reason, and sometimes no. What matters is being honest, exactly like you did – he sighed – and like I did with Tara.
               _Oh, I was about to ask about her – Dani frowned to his sad expression.
               _I wasn’t happy with our relationship. Don’t get me wrong, Tara’s a beautiful human being, inside and out, but we just…didn’t work as a couple. She’s so amazing, she understood my side and also said she wouldn’t want to be with someone who didn’t love her.
               _ Sometimes you have a reason, and sometimes no, right? – Dani nudged Horatio. They shared a giggle and looked at each other’s eyes for a while, then she saw they reached a bridge – I’ve discovered here’s a good place to stop and think when I’m stressed or upset– she let out his arm, but took his hand and guided him to the grid. He felt a chill in his stomach again.
               _I can see why – they leaned slightly on the grid and admired a privileged view of the city of San Francisco, the buildings, the streets, the lights and the sound of the nightlife – when you come in a place like that, your problems seem nothing to the greatness of the universe.
               _Exactly! – Dani faced him, smiling broadly, and Horatio smiled back – I knew you’d understand! Only a person with this poetic soul like yours could see it!
               _Oh, Dani, you’re so sweet – Horatio was interrupted by Dani, who took his face between her hands and brought him down to a kiss. He was caught off guard, but was taken by the sensation of her lips against his and responded eagerly, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her closer. After a long, breathless kiss, he pulled back, still trying to figure out what just happened.
               _There was a reason why I said no to them that day – she caressed his cheek – it’s you, Horatio.
               _W-what? – he looked quizzically at her.
               _I’ve been feeling this way for some time. But I just recognized it when I came here to think in that decision. And when I was admiring this place, I realized that you would be the only one who would share this opinion with me. There was also a reason for me to bring you here, the place where I realized I was in love with you – Dani smiled slightly, but frowned when Horatio said nothing, an unreadable expression on his face – uh, Horatio, now might be a good time for you to say something – she knew it was risky, and the fear of hearing a no haunted her.
               _Sorry, Dani, but…wow, I can’t believe you feel the same – he finally grinned and her face lightened up.
               _Really?
               _Yeah. I can’t take you off my mind since I met you, but I knew Mark liked you too, and then Leah and Ben, I didn’t want to be just another one disputing your heart, and I thought you always saw me as a friend. And then Tara appeared in my life, and I tried to focus on someone I knew who liked me, but I didn’t like her in the same way, so… - he took her hands – you’re the reason I broke up with Tara, Dani. I’m also in love with you – she jumped and put her arms around his neck, and he hugged her, laughing and lifting her off the floor – yeah, I’m also happy to know that you correspond to my feelings.
               _I know! – she kissed him again and he put her back on the floor – but why did you take so long to tell me that?
               _I didn’t want to screw my friendship with Mark. He talked about you a lot, and when I finally met you in person, I could see why he liked you so much – he kissed her cheek – but he’s one of my best friends, I didn’t want to get in his way. Actually, I don’t know what he would think about us together.
               _As I said, we have a brother-sister friendship, and he also considers you a great friend, so I’m pretty sure he’d be happy for us – Dani hit his chest playfully – and you want it? Us together?
               _This’s what you want too, right? Now that I know how you feel, I don’t want to waste a second away from you, Dani – Horatio leaned in and caught her lips again, slowly and tenderly – and I think this waiting increased my desire for you – he kissed her again, longer this time – because I can’t stop kissing you – she smiled against his lips.
               _I love seeing how passionate and decided you are, Horatio. And of course I want to be with you – they couldn’t stop smiling, and he rested his forehead on hers, holding her hands.
               _You’re also a passionate woman, Dani, who puts your soul in everything you do. That’s one of the things I admire about you – she giggled, kissing him quickly, before he deepened the kiss again – I still can’t believe in it, I must be dreaming. No, this’s better than a dream, because it’s real.
               _I know. I was afraid you wouldn’t feel the same, but I needed to say it, or I would explode – she moved closer to him and encircled his waist with her arms, and he wrapped her around as well. She melted against his embrace while he kissed the top of her head – can we stay here forever, boyfriend? – he chuckled.
               _We can stay here for as long as you want. I also want to enjoy this moment with you, girlfriend – she grinned and tightened her arms. They remained there for a few moments feeling their warmth contrasting with the cold night air – Dani?
               _Yeah?
               _I love you – she tilted her head to face him.
               _I love you too, Horatio – he spread kisses all over her face before press his lips on hers one more time. At that moment, there was nothing in the world but themselves and happiness.

Thoughts Dump on Season 7 Episodes 10-13
Shall we do this little read more thing here cause this is going to get long? Probably. Def open for talking about them if you decide to read all the way through! I’m up for some good MLP discussion.
A Royal Problem
Can I just start by saying how much I LOVE that we got an episode that actually has more in depth on the Princesses? I’ve been aching for one for forever, and honestly it feels like we’ve gotten more Luna over time cause she’s the one who’s had bigger problems that she’s needed to sort out.
CELESTIA THOUGH, you cannot tell me she’s the boring blob that being the princess she is demands her to be all the time. This is why I need moreeeee. Give me Celestia’s wild side PLEASE.
On that note, I love how good she is at covering it up compared to Luna. Issues? Don’t fret my little ponies, they are being solved and I assure you, everything is alright. She’s just so GOOD at her role in being the one that takes everything just to make everyone else’s lives easier and brighter. Dang Celestia, how do you do it. Also the personality contrast between she and Luna is still great and it also shows their age/experience difference.
The Twilight music box was a good example of how wonderfully odd this show can be and how, after 7 seasons, it continues to catch me off guard. I LOVE IT.
CELESTIA MAKES PANCAKES FOR EVERYPONY IN THE MORNING. I DIED. She is far too good and I highly appreciate the fact that she enjoys cooking, especially such silly yet comforting things?? Lmao
Not that I didn’t see it coming (I mean duh, but it’s just been awhile), but also holy heck is she a morning person. This is definitely where I connect to Luna more, and I love her snark.
Both the Princesses are just too good tbh, they both try so hard and do so much good in their own ways. LIKE HOW CONCERNED LUNA WAS ABOUT THE FUNDRAISER EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T HER USUAL DUTY. She tried and immediately failed and felt super bad about it. All because she can’t hold a smile sjflksdjfjhdfj
Was telling my sister the whole time that nobody would ever, ever be as bold as Starlight Glimmer and that’s why this episode worked, and so I was glad Luna said nearly the exact same thing at the end. Applause for Starlight tbh.
Daybreaker’s design tho. On a more personal note, I was admiring her snarly face the whole time cause it’s definitely the closest design i’ve seen in the show so far that would work for Kelpie shape-wise. Putting that note aside if I ever try to do canon style stuff with my OC’s!
Luna’s dream was legitimately creepy for a show that seems to tone stuff down so much. There are like, magic battles and villains and stuff, but rarely does something strike me as dark? Maybe it’s just me.
THAT’S IT FOR THIS ONE, I probs give it a 9/10
Not Asking For Trouble
I don’t want to get too into this one, but for quite awhile Pinkie’s characterization has bothered me. Compared to the first few seasons, it seems recently she’s been over the top to the point of making others upset, but not even in a silly Pinkie way. It almost came across as less annoying others, but using her silly personality as a cover to let her freely say mean things? I’m not sure what happened there, but it sorta rubbed me the wrong way and this was just a good example of Pinkie being Pinkie.
She went with everything the Yaks said and tried to understand them and fix the issue without being too much of a bother to them! That’s the Pinkie I know! I was honestly waiting for disppointment and was relieved when it didn’t happen.
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or a lot of people thought this too, but what can I say, some episodes just seem more consistent than others
7/10?
Discordant Harmony
I FLIPPIN LOVE DISCORD
HE’S SUCH A BABY AND A PROTECTIVE GRUMP, DEFINITELY THE UNCARING OUTSIDE MUSHY INSIDE CHARACTER THAT I LOVE
HE’S SOOOOOO ODD IN THE BEST WAY
I reminded my little sister of this 50 times during the episode. I just feel the need to emphasize how much I love my dumb noodle horse dragon at all times.
I don’t specifically like or dislike Fluttercord but you gotta admit there’s some good cheesy content here. THEY’RE CUTE FRIENDS AAAAA
Sometimes I wonder what the inside of Discord’s head looks like if he appears that crazy on the outside. Just, his mind must work in a very different way lol
THE SINGING GINSENG IS CUTE I WANT 100
I still marvel that the Discord we first saw is so taken by Fluttershy in such a legitimate way, but I am starting to get it. I suppose that his thing was always just chaos and messing with others and not necessarily being evil, and that’s probably what got me. He iiiiis kind of an attention hog so honestly, making friends that allow him to be his chaotic self around them is probably a fair compromise. Still, sometimes.
Explain to me though why he needed to go to 5 different stores to get things he could’ve just conjured up himself. Smh he likes to make things difficult and it pains me!! Stop being such a drama queen, but also don’t xD
Did u see the part where he hyperventilated into the bag but his neck expanded instead. Okay top wacky cartoon humor LOL
“Do something chaotic Fluttershy” “Oh no, I tipped over that cup!” MY SISTER AND I HAD A GOOD LAUGH AT THAT FLUTTERS PLS
There was probably an even mix of me expressing my love for discord and shaking my head actually. They go together hand in hadn though, no?
Hmm this one was also probably 9/10
The Perfect Pear
WHAT CAN I EVEN SAY ABOUT THIS EPISODE
IT JUST GOT ME GOOD
IT WAS NICE TO GET BACKSTORY ON APPLEJACK’S PARENTS AND EQUAL PARTS HAPPY AND SAD
I MEAN THEY DEF AREN’T AROUND ANYMORE, DON’T THINK THERE WS ANY OTHER WAY TO READ THE IMPLICATIONS
SO MANY GOOD FEELS
Just story and writing wise though this episode was so well done. There are always the funny episodes and everyone has their own favorite for reasons or because of their favorite characters, but sometimes some are just GOOD. Like classics, or everybody’s favorite, the ones that continue to stick out from the 100+ episodes the show has.
I’m rewatching these as I type this out and you know an episode’s good when you finish it and rewatch and things make more sense the second time around. Like how Grand Pear comes across as just a nice old pony the first time you watch it and if you rewatch it you’re like “Ohhh that look and being nice specifically towards Apple Bloom wasn’t just a random kind gesture”
Applejack’s over-reacting to everything: “PEAR JAM??? IN MY KITCHEN??” *DRAMATIC GASP*
“The food smells great Applejack i’ll brb for dinner” You mean the pancakes that are scattered all over the floor???
“And her cutie mark was a preserved jar, but pear butter don’t look too different from apple butter, so you know...” LMAO (true??)
The “the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree” moments got me, THESE KIDS TAKE AFTER THEIR PARENTS IN THE BEST WAYS. The sibling bonding was adorable in this ep.
Also I have to note, Pear Butter with her little bit of sassiness and curly ginger hair gave me Puck Connolly vibes the whole episode, which is always a good thing
DAMN THESE APPLES THAT STRIKE ME RIGHT IN THE FEELS EVERY TIME ONE OF THEM GOES INTO SONG
Def the part that got me the hardest right there. Like trying not to tear up, even
Ship goals tbh
What happened to them though honestly
GAH THE ENDING’S GIVING ME FEELS AGAIN I’LL END HERE
10/10 EASILY

Deathly Silence part 3
Part one; https://newtdisneywho.tumblr.com/post/156801807573/deathly-silence-newt-x-reader
Part 2; https://newtdisneywho.tumblr.com/post/157309091963/deathly-silence-part-2
Warnings: implied abuse. Torture, parental death
“Memories are usually fractured. They never play in order so this could be confusing,” Tina told them placing a large wooden box on the kitchen table. “We’ll do out best, huh honey?” Queenie squeezed Y/n’s hand. Newt watched as Tina lifted the lid off the box. “Is that a Pensieve?” “You’ve used one before?” Tina asked. “N..no, there was one at my school but I’ve never used it,” he told her. “Well this is similar. This one is a mirror rather than a bowl. Queenie will draw out Y/n’s memories and throw them in here and we should be able to see them.” “Oh, it won’t hurt sweetie. You might feel a bit sleepy and it might upset you. Memories have a tendency to do that huh?” Queenie assured the girl. Y/n nodded at her, memories definitely upset her. That’s why she tried not to remember, why she’d kept it all locked away for so many years, drowned it in the silence of her life until recently. What if she couldn’t lock it back up? What if her memories betrayed her? What if they saw something in her hidden past that made them turn on her? She felt her chest constrict and she couldn’t breathe, her skin began to tingle and she trembled.
“Ssh, honey, it’s ok. Y/n, calm down. Honestly, you’re okay….” Queenie tried to calm her as her thoughts began to consume her. “Queenie? What’s going on?” Tina asked. “She’s panicking,” Newt stated stepping forward and grasping the girl’s hands. “Y/n breathe. Deep breaths, slowly. Look at me and concentrate.” He crouched in front of her, rubbing the back of her hands with his thumbs, trying to ease her trembling. “That’s it.” He offered her a small smile as her eyes, which had been darting frantically around the room, settled on his. “You’re safe.” She nodded and glanced at their hands, noticing his were littered with scars. Bringing one hand closer to see better, she ran a finger across a scar on his thumb. She could see the teeth marks so clearly. “It tends to happen when you work with wild animals,” he shrugged. For the next few minutes he showed her the bites and scratches that adorned his hands and forearms, naming which animal they were inflicted by. Y/n tentatively reached up and gently stroked the tiny line on the bridge of his nose and he flushed slightly before clearing his throat. “That happened when I was at school….. Let’s just say Sports aren’t for everyone,” he chuckled. Queenie couldn’t help but grin at the pair before Tina cut in. “Are you ready?” she asked. Newt felt y/n tense again. “You’ll be alright. We’ll be right here the whole time. You’re safe.” “She’s worried we won’t like what we see,” Queenie told them. “She’s spent so long burying her memories she’s scared she’s done something…..evil…that she doesn’t remember.” “Not possible,” Newt whispered to her, wishing he could hear her himself. “Newt, what if,” Tina didn’t get a chance to finish her sentence. “Not possible,” he told them firmly, “she’s not dangerous or……evil. You’re not.” He looked y/n squarely in the eye and she realised how sure he was, he’d not looked at anyone firmly since she’d met him. “Of course she’s not,” Queenie agreed. “How about we sort out all these jumbled thoughts of yours and figure out what’s been happening, huh sweetie?” Y/n took a deep breath and nodded. Queenie drew her wand and gently held it to y/n’s temple, she began twirling it slightly as a silver thread wrapped itself around the end. Newt couldn’t help being reminded of seeing this happen with Tina. Last time though he thought it was the end, and if it hadn’t been for Pickett neither of them would be here now. He shuddered at the thought, his hand tightening on y/n’s as her eyelids began to droop. After a few moments Queenie flicked her wand at the mirror.
It was the noise that woke her. Raised, angry voices. Creeping out of bed she headed to the living room but kept out of sight. “You had a job to do, Professor,” came a growl. “I told you. I can’t do it. It’s not right,” came a shaky reply. “Can’t or won’t? I don’t think you understand. Did you think it was a choice? It’s a necessity, the school must be in hand, the students and teachers will understand what’s right.” “Then they’ll do it without me.” “I’m sorry to hear that, Professor y/l/n. I’m sure your lovely wife is sorry to hear that too.” “Leave her alone!” “Crucio!” Screams filled the air and, stifling a cry Y/n scurried away and hid in a cupboard. She huddled as close to the back as possible, trying to keep her sobs quiet. Eventually her mother’s screams faded to nothing, the only sound was her fathers wails of despair. “So Professor?” “I can’t. I can’t. Too many will die,” he sobbed. “You will die Professor if you don’t.” There was a pause before a shout of “Crucio.” It was repeated over and over as her father’s screams filled the night. They seemed to go on forever and all she could do was hide until the house fell silent one more. Creeping out from her hiding place, Y/n carefully made her way towards the living room. Scurrying to her father’s side she was just in time to see him take his last breath. “Petrificus Totalus,” a voice came from behind her. Once she was on the ground hands grabbed her shoulders and rolled her over. “Oh how I hate loose ends. It’s a shame, so pretty for one so young,” he told her, stroking a finger down her face. Y/n could only stare up at him in fear. His blue eye seemed to pierce into her soul whilst his brown eye was so dark it was almost black. A grotesque smile split his lips. “Will we die, just a little? It won’t hurt,” he told her, standing, “for long. Crucio!” Screams were torn from her throat over and over until there was no voice left and he was loving every minute. The torture only stopped when a shout came from another room; “MACUSA!” “MACUSA, always turning up where they’re least wanted.” He smiled again. “Until we meet again, sweet girl.”  And then he was gone. Hearing more shouting and crashing, Y/n dragged herself to another cupboard and waited. As she regained some control of her body she braced herself, expecting to be found any moment. When the discovery never came she was almost relieved until the smoke started to appear, seeping under the door. They’d set the house on fire!   Bolting from her hiding place, Y/n stumbled through the kitchen to the back door and out into the woods behind her home, collapsing against a tree as darkness consumed her.
The Goldstein sisters looked at one another and then at Newt. He was crouched in front of Y/n trying ease her trembling, whispering to her. “You’ve done nothing wrong, honey,” Queenie soothed, taking a seat beside her. “How old were you then?” 15 “15? You were just a kid, what could you have done? Honey, you did what so many haven’t been able to. You survived! And your parents would be so proud of you.” “I should contact MACUSA,” Tina stated, “they need to know. They didn’t search properly, they could have killed her.” “I suspect they had no intention of leaving anyone in that house alive,” Newt said gravely. “Don’t pretend you don’t recognise that man. He may have been younger but it was him and MACUSA have him. Y/n, that man is called Gellert Grindlewald. He’s a dark wizard and a murderer but he isn’t out there. He’s not free and you’re safe. Professor Y/l/n was a good man. He taught at Hogwarts in my first few years before he suddenly left, now I know where he went.” A solemn silence settled over the apartment. “So…. What do we do now?” Queenie asked. “Looks to me like Y/n needs our help. Well… More specifically your kind of help,” Tina told her sister. A broad grin graced the blonde Goldstein’s face. “Oh of course! A girl can’t travel round with only one dress! We’ve got a few hours left of today. Mr Scamander, can we borrow Y/n?” “O…of course. As long as Y/n is happy.” “Right this way honey.” Queenie led her to her bedroom. “Let’s see what I can magic up.” “W..wait!” Newt called. “We left in quite a hurry so y/n has… W…well nothing.” Reaching into his pocket, he withdrew a money clip. “Here.” He flushed a little and fidgeted as he handed it to her. Queenie’s eye widened. “You want us to take her shopping?” “I…if it’s not too much trouble?” She grinned. “Oh Mr Scamander, you are just such a cutie!” Tina looked from the money clip in her sister’s hand to Newt. He looked uncomfortable and she was sure that any moment he would dive into his case and remain there. Queenie looked at Y/n and back at Newt. “She’s worried about paying you back. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to repay you and that scares her.” Newt shook his head. “It’s not necessary.” “She thinks it is.” “Then I’m sure she’ll manage to find a way, one way or another. I suspect Miss Y/n can to anything she sets her mind to,” he smiled gently. He didn’t want repayment, he didn’t need it. Being a Scamander came with a few perks, a comfortable bank account was one of them, plus his book was selling well.
Y/n felt a cold knot setting in her stomach. Men had done her favours, wanted or not, and always expected something in return. Usually they had ideas of her being on her knees. Maybe his quiet countenance was a cover. Who knows what he’s like behind closed doors. Her thoughts were broken by a gasp from Queenie and she instantly felt guilty. These people had done nothing but help her and be kind, especially Mr Scamander. She mentally beat herself for allowing her dark thoughts to cloud her judgment. Queenie wrapped a coat around her shoulders and guided her to the front door. “Are you coming Teenie?” Tina saw the pleading in her sisters eyes but managed to hold back a frown. “Sure, someone needs to make sure you don’t just buy party dresses. Will you be okay Newt?” “Me? Oh yes. I’ll be busy enough,” he assured them, climbing into his case. “Have fun.” XxXxX Queenie had dragged Y/n and Tina around several dress shops and a department store, collecting various garments, and Tina’s feet were beginning to ache. She flopped down in a chair whilst y/n went into yet another changing room. “What is going on?” she asked her sister. “Her thoughts are so sad sometimes, she doesn’t really trust anyone. I think she wants to but then her mind just goes to a really dark place..” “Can you blame her?” “She… She thinks Newt is going to hurt her because he’s buying her things.” “Define hurt.” “I don’t really want to.” “Queenie…” “I saw her thoughts and I don’t really want to relive it. Let’s just say she’d end up on her knees…in front on him…..unwillingly.” Tina wiped a hand down her face, “Do you think she's….been in that position before?” “I don’t know but the detail of her imagination….” Queenie shuddered. “Well, we have to convince her that Newt is….well he’s Newt.” When y/n emerged from behind the curtain, a huge grin lit up her face. “Queenie!” Tina chided. “What? Every girl needs at least one party dress. I thought we could go out tonight. Show y/n what a fun night in New York is like. Besides, look how beautiful she is when she smiles!” Y/n stared at herself in the mirror, turning this way and that. For once, just for that moment, she could imagine being normal, like Queenie and Tina. That there were no monsters hiding in the dark. The pale blue silk flowed gently around her as she moved, the lace cap sleeves sparkling with tiny beads. The sisters stepped up behind her in the mirror smiling. “Being normal is overrated,” Queenie winked. “Besides, if I was normal I wouldn’t know what you were thinking. Honey, what you were thinking earlier? About Newt. He’d never hurt you, he’d never hurt anyone. That’s just not who he is. Newt’s just a giver. If he can save a life he will, with no thought for his own. Whatever has happened to you in the past, he won’t let it happen again.” “Newt saved my life too,” Tina told her. “I probably didn’t deserve it, I’d almost got him and his creatures killed but he still did it. He got free and then saved me. He could have just run and saved himself but he didn’t. We’d only known each other 24 hours. It’s just who he is. He’s gentle and kind and so brave. Try to trust him? I think you need someone like him in your life.” The older Goldstein’s eyes were softer now than they had been since they’d met, she was being less reserved. “And I think Queenie is right,” she said, her voice more firm than it was a few moments ago. “I think we all need to left off some steam. So let’s  get our things together and go tell Newt the good news. We’re going out tonight.” She grinned and squeezed Y/n’s shoulder.
