Like This & Like That
In the not so distant past I was frantically shuffling through nursing school with my eye on a promise that the choice I had made would provide security for my family and a colorful career for myself. I have never put more trust into anything before, and much of it felt entirely blind. It’s very unusual for me to blindly go all in without clear definition of what will be the product. I am historically a control freak.
I came from a very regimented structured program and university that very strongly advocated for its nursing graduates to move into either education, administration, military, or intense hospital nursing. It wasn’t a spoken rule by any measure but certainly that’s what seemed to get everyone all warm and fuzzy. My peers listed off their hopes of working in the Air Force, becoming neonatal intensive care unit nurses, neuro-oncology nurses.. wound care nurses.. the things you probably picture nurses to do with their skills and education. I’ll never forget what a graduating senior said to a group of us new sophomores who hadn’t had clinical experience yet, “if you don’t enjoy your medsurg clinical you probably shouldn’t be a nurse”. Daunting. It crippled my good friend right out of nursing school and normally that’s what would’ve happened to me too.
The pragmatic higher thinking part of my adult brain overrode that silly statement. I think my life experience up to that point was able to see beyond oversimplifications like that. So I continued to trust and invest all the while getting older, deeper into debt, and further involved in existential questions of my my purpose and my abilities as a woman and a creature.
I stand where I am now in awe and disbelief. Since I graduated and passed my boards I haven’t been able to fathom the unveiling of opportunities. People have been coming to me to request I apply to work with or for them including at the Plainfield Health Center, the Vermont Department of Health as a nurse epidemiologist, in multiple areas of multiple different hospitals..
Overwhelming isn’t the word. Joyful? Proud? I don’t know what the word is. I am in awe and amazed at my accomplishment. I truly did not believe I possessed the ability to create a new branch and path in my family’s story.
Nursing isn’t rocket science, but it certainly is rigorous in several ways including what felt like the ultimate test of character. Academically challenging for sure, but it was so much more than that. Prior in my life I’ve gained praise for my demeanor and dedication, not the case in nursing school. I felt, as we all did, that we were not worthy of the title we were after. I craved proving my will to myself. It’s sort of sadistic in a way.
Now that it’s all over and the death of my daughter has broken me down to my core, I feel as though I’ve been granted a new beginning. It really feels like starting all over again. Being reborn only this time I trust myself a little more. I’m reborn with skills and tools and have strong value. I also determined the senior with all of her nursing wisdom was wrong. We are not all cut out for hospital nursing as we all shouldn't be.
Five or so months ago I couldn’t have ever pictured going back to work. I couldn’t picture healing myself let alone others, I couldn’t picture doing my laundry or minimally cleaning my house let alone maintaining infection control protocols in a hospital. If I woke up and Grace ate, the day was a success.
It was around Thanksgiving time that I spoke with my employer and conveyed that very message in a heartfelt monologue. Their response surprised me and left me feeling so not pressured to make up my mind. They kept me on the roster so that I’d still receive benefits (under FMLA) and offered to help me find work in another area of the organization IF that’s what I wanted. Otherwise they expressed a sincere willingness to offer recommendations and write referrals.
At that point I looked into their job openings and thought how impossible it would be to find a match. A match to what? What even was I? I was a brand new nurse, in thick grief, what could I offer? I couldn’t align myself to people around me, conversations felt so foreign and awkward.
The very first day I browsed job postings I saw an opening for a triage nurse at Montpelier Integrative Family Medicine. Well that’s too good to be true, working for a place that is willing to get creative and think outside the box but also be independent of way out there eclectic naturopathy. It is what it’s name implies, it’s integrative. No way. I talked with my liaison from the hospital who made some calls and found that in fact it was too good to be true. Understandably a triage nurse needs prior experience.
Time went on, I applied to a couple of other positions that didn’t appeal to me but felt an obligation to put in some effort. In mid-February another job at Montpelier Integrative opened up. It was full time though and that didn’t sound remotely possible to me. Being away for 9 hours per day, 5 days per week? Couldn’t do it.
Meanwhile I went back to my old position at the hospital. My coworkers were as inviting and welcoming back as they could possibly have been, and the support was all I could ask for. The nature of the work mixed with the crazy hours on the other hand. I just could not set aside the interference of my circumstances playing on a reel through my mind. It kept me from being able to think in any depth and certainly kept me from being able to retain the volumes of details and contexts that I needed in order to even mildly effectively move through my day. Big fat no. Couldn’t do it.
My employer said they would extend my leave again, but this time the resources were sort of exhausted so I would need to be hired into a new position by the end of March or else they’d have to let me go. I decided it was time to dig into Montpelier Integrative a little more. And I thought about my criteria. One of my criteria was to not work crazy hours.. but I also had to weigh being able to walk at lunch time (rather than swallowing lunch whole while trying to chart on my patients), I could have Ashton and Grace come visit for lunch. Another factor that had to be seriously considered was weekends and holidays. The profession I got myself into works around the clock in all elements of weather, to not worry about holidays in an office setting was certainly a perk.
I thought and weighed and rearranged all that I could to try and think up a scenario that would fit the best and what I decided was that I hoped to work no more than part time.
I submitted my application on a Monday, by Thursday HR had contacted the practice to see what the status was. They already had plans to interview me. What?! Don’t get my hopes up, it may not be what I dreamed, in fact it probably is not, and furthermore the position I applied for was full time. My hope was to get an interview and see if there was any flexibility.
They called me for an interview the following week. It’s in a great location, near downtown as opposed to isolated just off the highway with no real great place to walk during a break.
I realized that I don’t get nervous for interviews at all anymore. I don’t know when the shift happened but I don’t get caught up in my head stressing about it, not beforehand or during.
The office has a weird layout but it’s doable. They at least talked emphatically about a plan to renovate soon. Change. I like it.
Two nurses interviewed me, one is an office nurse who would be my partner, she’s been working there for about 8 months. Prior to that she was an ED nurse at CVMC and also worked as a float around the hospital. She was intimidating. But intimidating means something very different to me now. I’m an adult, I have value and skills, I am a mother, I have accomplished a lot, the feeling of being intimidated is only a feeling not a quality or trait of mine. The other nurse is the practice manager. She’s intense but the kind that made me feel she could be trusted to have her nurses backs if push came to shove. She’s very alpha female but with more of the feminine traits- understanding and compassionate- and less of the masculine domineering ones.
Early in the interview she said firmly that the position was full time, I saw no opening or invite for negotiation. So from that point on in the interview I didn’t do much of anything at all to sell myself, I turned it around and wanted to be sold the position. I felt like my sacrifices had to be worth it and wanted proof of it.
They were really into me despite my secret reservations, I could tell they were interested in my experience and my aura. They talked about the position as though it were already mine using phrases like, “this is what you’ll be doing”. They gave me a tour and introduced me to the other nurses and the provider who I would be working for.
I left kind of bummed. How could I reconcile 40 hours per week? I spent a few days minimally thinking about it. I had sort of written it off, especially after one night when I decided there was no way I could part with my counseling visits. I sort of forgot about it.
I went back to the drawing board and was far far less inspired. I just had an interview at the only place I could envision being a nurse at this point in time and have all but turned it away. How was I going to find a fit? Nothing felt right.
I put my thoughts together and finally decided to send the hiring nurse an email. She told me to contact her by email with any questions. I wrote thanking her for her time and for the opportunity but that I didn’t think it were possible for me to walk away from the routines I have developed to help me cope. As I wrote it, I found myself reeeeaaally wanting her to find a way to make it work for me, but for how firm she was in the interview I felt like it was no use. I typed it in there anyway “if there is any adjustment that can be made to fit my life in where I need it…”
I had it all typed and ready to send. Ashton was beside me, and so I started reading it to him for a final check before I sent it off to its doom. Just as I got to the second paragraph my phone rang. It was Gail, the office manager.
I didn’t know what to say, but I did because I had just rehearsed it for the last hour. She was giddy with excitement, she had several ways of describing how much they wanted me to come work with them. She was far more emphatic than she was in the interview. I said, “I just have to be honest, I can’t leave counseling and other commitments that I have made to myself”, she said, “I am a flexible manager and I will make anything you need to work, work. Don’t you worry about that”. I also said we finalized a plan to take a trip to Austin in 3 weeks. Done. She said she’ll list it as a condition of being hired. I accepted the offer. I took a $1.24 pay cut, which was a surprise, I was expecting a more dramatic drop in pay. I don’t lose benefits, I don’t change organizations.. I qualify for short term disability now, I qualify for 28 days off per year..
I don’t know exactly what I need, but I feel like I’m doing the right thing. Grace is in daycare 3 days per week as it is. I asked Ashton if he could bring Grace to me for lunch on her off days. I’ll be able to see her when she wakes up, I’ll be able to have dinner with her, and weekends and holidays, and all the while I’ll be able to establish some financial stability for us. A major major factor was benefits. In the current political climate keeping health insurance means even more to me than income.
Here we go, my life is about to change again. I hope to create a lens or filter that works for me to enjoy all aspects and not feel like any one area of importance to me is negated. Especially Grace. I think the routine will help for me to concentrate my time with her even more than I do now. Sort of like putting the oxygen on myself before others. I can do it. I can find balance, I just have to be willing to see it and know that it won’t always feel the same. I have to be vigilant about planning vacations and using my time off wisely.
I feel that this will anchor me in a way that I need right now. I need mental exhaustion in a different way.
I welcome more change, and am open to growing and learning.
Nothing ever has to be permanent, and it doesn’t ever have to be one or the other.

Well, hello!
I’m back from both GenCon and then a week off on family vacation, and big thanks to the amazing Dixie for filling in with this blog last week!
I’m full of energy and rarin’ to go. Doing that thing where you bounce on your toes a bit – which is kind of hard to do typing away as I have been all day!
If my emails were physical mail, the letters would fill my office, so I’m taking a bit of time to get through all of them. Plus, this week’s Monday Meeting was a fair bit of catch-up for all of our crew (besides Eddy, who is still on his vacay visiting wrestling events), with a few reports from us on GenCon, and the meetings that came out of it.
Which I’ll share with you now:
First, the message we relayed at our various panels was that we’re continuing to change/evolve as we need to as a company. So if you think our Kickstarters are only about Deluxe books and we run them like we did in 2013, please check again, because we’re far more likely to run a KS in order to do a print run of books to get into retail stores.
Which is another continuing evolution as we continue to add projects that will mean books that get into distribution and stores via our sales partners at Studio2 and IPR– all while maintaining our availability on DriveThruRPG and our other venues.

The big change at GenCon was our choice to not appear there with an Onyx Path booth in the Exhibitor Hall, so that was something brought up a fair bit at the convention.
So far, from talking things through today, we’re still thinking it was a good decision. Both Mighty Matt McElroy and I had much more time to talk with creators like Travis Legge, our friends in the business (either existing or prospective), translators, and I even made a walk-through of artist alley and got to chat with some of our favorites.
Meanwhile, as we anticipated, our panels were a great place to field questions from our regular attendees. Thanks to all of you who attended and put us through our paces with your questions! We’ll be getting a report on how our demo games went later from The Wrecking Crew, but I, at least, only heard good things about those.
If you were there, or had friends there, and heard anything otherwise about our presence at Gen Con, please let me know – either here in the comments or directly to [email protected]. We really do appreciate knowing how others saw things.

Another big set of questions were about White Wolf/Paradox and how Vampire, V5, WoD, 20th Anniversaries, CofD, and Exalted are going to be created, published, handled.
Part of the confusion was within that “not happening like it used to” theme we talked about. WW/Paradox is signing lots of licensees for all sorts of projects; mostly for V5, but also for other WoD projects. Seeing boardgames come out from four or five different companies, several card games from different companies including the rebirth of Vampire: the Eternal Struggle, and also several computer games is a lot happening that we should be thrilled about as fans.
What seems the most confusing for folks, though, is when they see different companies producing V5 TTRPGs, maybe because they’re concerned about V5 game books being created by multiple companies and that’s just not how it has been done, or they’re are concerned about rules and setting coherence, or overall quality. Or maybe because it’s not clear how the rest of the WoD game lines will be handled.
We at Onyx Path can only reply as we did at the con – with our understanding of the situation. Which is that it is not easy to reconfigure a business as WW/Paradox has been reconfigured and that currently their team is juggling a lot of existing licensed projects as the folks responsible for overseeing the V5 brand. That means, in answer to the concerns of coherence and quality, that WW/Paradox reviews and approves all the projects and follows through their creation with further approvals to maintain everything V5 the way they want it.
Which is another good reason they are working with the fine folks at Modiphius to get more V5 TTRPG material published, as Modiphius can take the biggest portion of the nuts and bolts of publishing and working with other licensees like Onyx Path off of WW/Paradox‘s busy hands and let them focus on brand management.
As for us, well, the wonderful accolades for V5 Chicago By Night‘s Backer PDF, the strong interest in the follow-up material for CbyN that came out of the Kickstarter Stretch goals, and the recent happy excitement over the V5 Cults of the Blood Gods press release, are all music to our ears and are great data-points when we discuss further projects.
(And hey, I know that sometimes it seems like we say stuff over and over on all our social media, including this MMN blog, about our upcoming projects, but we heard from so many surprised folks after that Cults press release who had no idea it was coming that you just gotta let us keep getting the word out in as many ways – and as often we have to in order to reach our far-flung fantastic fans!)
Beyond V5, and figuring that the time will come that other game lines get attention, it’s always going to start with what WW/Paradox wants to do, so they’re the folks you want to politely let know your thoughts and feelings about those WW game lines. We can, and do, submit pitches as a licensee, but they’re the owners and decide which things get the green light to move ahead.

Back to overall Onyx Path changes, we noted at Gen Con that there was no new brochure debuted at Gen Con, as we want to do a full year one – Jan through Dec. So expect 2020 one to debut a month early at PAX Unplugged this year and then throughout 2020’s cons starting with MidWinter in Jan.
That also means that we didn’t spring any new projects at the con, as we usually build them into the brochure. Part of that is the brochure timing thing, and part of it is that we’re looking at announcements that roll out through the year rather than happening at a single event- unless tying it to the event makes the most sense.
You can expect some of those about new projects unannounced that are already in the works, as well as those we worked out in meetings at Gen Con, throughout the rest of this year and through 2020, as we keep on making:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
On this date in 1990, Sue, the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton found to date, is discovered by Sue Hendrickson in South Dakota. Y’know, I sure love dinosaurs. As a kid, I corrected Miss Larmen, my Kindergarten teacher, when she misidentified and mispronounced their names. Lest you think I was just a little know-it-all, she encouraged me to do so, thus unknowingly setting me on a life-long path as a smart-ass.

2/7/2018 – No Contact:  Pissed Off/On Switch
Work was shit today.  Remember how I was stoked that my manager wasn’t going to work with me?  Well, I was wrong.  He was called in.  I left ten minutes earlier and it was great.  Work was shit though.  Buuuut, I had an hour for a break.  Unfortunately, I only had half that.
Things got bad when the lady who was upset with me for placing salt with edibles came in.  I welcomed her with pristine customer service. Then I go back to organize some of the aisles in the front, specifically the body wash and lady hygiene products.
I hear something fall over and break behind me.  I look.  Nothing.  I check the next aisle.  Nothing.  I told my manager I heard something but assumed it was an auditory hallucination.  I go to the register and discover a disgruntled elderly woman.  She is like one of a select few customers who dislikes me but she dislikes everyone.  She was sporadic and yelling about this kid.
Apparently, he was urinating right in front of her somewhere in the store.  She wanted to leave and was rushing me and the customers before her.  I didn't think she was serious until my manager confronted the kid who did it.  Sure enough, he was hostile and he had pissed in the store, over a bunch of books.
I quickly cash my customers out to get this screaming woman out.  The customer ahead of her was glaring at her.  Admittedly, the old lady was a total bitch but the faster she goes the faster she gets distance between herself and elderly bitch.  I quickly cash her out and a couple people behind her and see my manager still arguing with the kid.  I yell and ask if he wanted me to call the police and he says yes.  I do that, discover I'm woefully inadequate at my job because I don't know my workplace address or number but that gets settled.  They ask me what his age was.  I tell them 19.  I had to guess, didn't see him except for his arms which had tattoos.  They asked his frame and I said light.  They asked his race and asked if he were right, black, or Hispanic.  I got a little offended but said Hispanic.  I don't recall what they said afterwards but we didn't see a cop car until 40 minutes later.
During that time, I mopped up the floor where he pissed and discovered he peed over the books and stuff.  Discovered that the noise I heard was him knocking over a glass candle.  I swept up the glass and had to occasionally stop by to sweep up more.
Mind you also told the police he was high because old bitch said he was. Nah, he was just blacked out from alcohol.  Underage drinking ftw.  I was concerned he might get belligerent with the cops and they'd overreact.  I was surprised to see they gave him a slap on the wrist. Took him home and he's banned from the store.  I went from concerned to pissed.
He was talking shit as the cops escorted him out in cuffs.  I was angry because my manager was antagonizing the kid.  I felt that was rude.
But yeah, in short: kid pissed in my workplace; had to clean it.
I told all that to Ariel first.  Well, most of it.  Basically copied and pasted.  Again, my manager was being a dick.  The kid was blacked out drunk and crying in the back at one point.  When I went to get a mop bucket my manager told me that he wanted someone to hold him. Like, seriously dude?
Of course, the kid talked trash to me at the very end.  He pissed me off and honestly, I was probably the only person who would have been at least a little kind to him.  I know how it feels to be young and stupid but christ.  Don’t antagonize someone.
But he was a brat.  I’m glad it’s over.
I just did a few exercises with the weights.  Lifted as much as I could until I couldn’t find the strength to lift it any higher.  I’m going to wait a bit and do it again.  I don’t have a lot of food left…  I might have gorged.  I think I should double up on cottage cheese and shredded cheese.  If I get hungry later tonight… or… this morning?  Yeah, if I get hungry I’ll cook some eggs.  Won’t need cheese and I can mix it with corn and onions and add spinach. Problem is, I’ll have to do dishes afterwards.
I had a dream I was spooning Esther.  She seemed upset with me.  I was making excuses.  Then I started lying to her, saying anything.  I guess I was really desperate.  I wish things turned out differently. :/
Ugh… it’s getting closer to Valentine’s Day and everyone is talking about love and shit.  ><
Whatever, last year Esther and I did nothing at her request.  To her it was another day.  I really wanted to do something with her, but whatever.
So, the streamer (NGParadox if I didn’t mention him) said he liked my character because he’s balanced as opposed to other characters.  I didn’t submit any stats and left it up for him to determine.  So, he determined what I described was balanced?  Idk, I think he’ll show the bio I provided later when the character comes up.  Exciting stuff.
I am feeling better, btw.  Nose is still stuffy and leaky… but whatever.  It’ll pass.  I’ll be better tomorrow and then I’ll be better the next day.
I was considering getting a pizza… but I was a bit late to the draw. Maybe this Friday?  We’ll have to see.  In the meantime, I’m going to get started on… writing?  Yeah, maybe.  I’ll start by drawing up some extracurricular activities.  Nothing special, just something I promised the people in this stream place.  Brb
There is a picture of Ariel.  Took a selfie earlier today.  She looks like an angel.  Very white skin, bleached hair, hazel eyes, red lips. Clearly winter where she is.  ;)

Kamen Rider Calliope Myth 1:8
Calliope was so proud of her quip that it took her a few seconds to remember she should be checking on the student whose roommate had nearly ended up with automatic A’s for the semester. By the time she had reached the body of the Ektroma, she noticed it starting to swell up in unnerving ways, persuading her to pick up the bystander and vacate the area as quickly as possible. They had barely passed beyond the field of Pandora’s Box when the remains of the Ektroma exploded behind them, just the right distance to be out of danger, but still be aesthetically pleasing as Calliope walked cooly away, carrying the fainted student in her arms.
Calliope held the girl out to Kokonoka and Shoki as they came running forward to meet her. “Take care of her. I’ll be back.” She hurried back the way she came, heading for where Yasuda was still lying on the ground. There was no trace left of the Ektroma, but her spear was still there, gleaming in the afternoon sun. Calliope pulled it out of the ground effortlessly and, with a quick spin, removed it from physical space. Odysseus had certainly chosen his weapon wisely.
Before heading over to Hikaru, Calliope also snatched up the pen that was lying right by the spear. It looked just the same as the one she had given Hikaru back on the first day they had met. Turning it over, she saw the ink gauge was empty, and she could feel no dangerous energies eminating from it. But she was wiser this time, and she wouldn’t be handing it off to anyone else.
Kaname felt the suit dissolve around her as she reached the spot where Hikaru was lying, and when he opened his eyes, he was in the arms of a friend. General confusion quickly gave way to stinging shame as the context of their situation came back to him. Nevertheless, he was hauled to his feet by Kaname.
“Crap… I can’t believe I did that… What the hell was I thinking…”
“Shut up, Yasuda. I’m not gonna hear it.”
Hikaru immediately lapsed into silence as Kaname shifted most of his weight onto her, pulling his arm around her shoulders. She realized he had probably taken that the wrong way.
“You were being controlled by that stupid pen. Don’t go blaming yourself for shit you wouldn’t have been doing otherwise.”
“I can’t really be sure that’s true. It might have affected my mood, but… I can’t deny much of what I’ve been saying. I regret it, but… I think it just revealed how much of an awful person I am.”
Kaname groaned and stopped walking, not even bothering to brace Hikaru as he stumbled forward from the sudden change in motion.
“Oh my god. Don’t start with that. Listen, Yasuda. I already get that was all stuff from your own head. But it was the pen that twisted you all up in it and made you go out of control. It’s some kind of evil tool that feeds off of people’s insecurities. And if all of that was true, so what? So part of you is an obsessive, condescending asshole. Welcome to the club, population, like, all of Earth.”
Kaname yanked on his arm again and they started off towards the nearest building. People were starting to arrive at the scene in groups; the usually-busy area had been conspicuously clear of other people once the fight had started. Fortunately Kaname’s high-intensity glare was successful at buffering other people’s urge to offer aid, and they had a clear path towards the medical office.
“You weren’t wrong about me either. I’ve been keeping it in for awhile now, but honestly, screw this university, and going to classes, and homework, and everything to do with it. I hate almost everything about this place and a large part of me wishes I had actually never gone back after the first day. Hell, if I hadn’t even gone on the first day I wouldn’t be wrapped up in all this mess now.”
Kaname heaved the heavy door open to the building they had reached, guiding Hikaru carefully over the threshold. “But y’know what. I don’t regret it. Yeah, I’m a know-nothing dipshit who’s probably wasting a space at this school when someone like your friend should actually be here. But y’know what, tough burgers. This is the way it is now, and I have every right to hate it as much as I want to, and maybe I’ll quit tomorrow, or a week from now, or never. That’s the kind of obsessive, condescending asshole I am.”
Hikaru was trying to look at her now, but it was Kaname’s turn to avoid eye contact, as she pushed him forward a bit more solidly than was called for.
“Maybe it’s assholes like you that can make this place bearable for assholes like me. Well, a few assholes and a really nice, kind, gentle soul who deserves a lot better.”
Hikaru gave her a weak laugh. “Sorry, it’s getting hard to follow when there’s so many assholes.”
Kaname grinned back. “If you can laugh, you can walk, buddy.”
Hikaru found himself relatively steady on his own feet by this time, and relieved Kaname of his weight. “There might be one less asshole soon, though. Now that the pen’s influence is gone, my grades are going to plummet. Even more than usual, since it wasn’t really helping me learn anything. I really screwed this up.”
“Don’t even worry about that. I’m gonna be making up all the times I didn’t come to your study club. In any way I can, I’m gonna make sure you at least pass all your stupid tests.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“No shit. Didn’t you hear what I was just saying? I do what I want, baby.”
Hikaru smiled at this. He tried to laugh a bit, too, but he suddenly found the process too exhausting. He gave the nearby wall his weight as his vision started to blur, and a concerned-looking Kaname began to fade in front of him.
“Whoops. Okay, let’s get you into a bed, Yasuda. Enjoy your rest now, cuz as soon as you’re up again we’re hitting the books.”
Hikaru tried to give a response, but it was only heard in his dreams, now placid and unburdened by his own heavy desires.
–#
“At least give it some thought.”
“Sure, here goes again. No. Not interested, sempai.” Kaname pushed the top of the paper offered out to her so it curled back upon itself.
Odakyuu sighed irritably and smoothed the application out. “Well, I’m not going to beg. Especially not to you. But I had to try.”
The two of them were standing in the dying light of the afternoon sun cast through the clubroom windows. Kaname had never been more ready to go home, watch some TV and forget that she had just fought off a cyclopean monstrosity, but Kokonoka had managed to catch her and let her know that Odakyuu had something important to ask of her. It had turned out be a request to join the Ancient Cultures Research Club.
“To be honest, I still don’t know if I should be here at this University for much longer. I’m going to help Yasuda study all this weekend, and he claims he’s gonna try and help me too, but I think I’m a bit beyond help at this point. But anyway, there’s gotta be plenty of folks who would be into… fanboying about old dead people with you.”
“You would think. This club has been particularly difficult to recruit for since last semester, and I can’t imagine that situation changing now. We are, however, in a particularly dire spot. I need to submit a report to the Student Activities Committee by the end of today, and if we don’t have any members signed on the ACRC will be disbanded.”
“Why would that happen? There’s still you and Ichiry- uh, Kokonoka-san at least.”
Odakyuu shook his frizzy head. “We both have troublesome circumstances. As you know, Ichiryuu-san’s father is an active policymaker in this University, and he’s never been fond of her spending much time outside of classes doing anything, as he would term it, “frivolous”. Her training to become the Ichiryuu’s successor at their temple is intensive. As for myself, I haven’t been quite as careful with my time management as I should be, between my studies and my research here. My family has never considered my passions to be anything but a… nuisance to achieving high marks. And while I passed everything last semester, it was closer than I would have liked. The bottom line is, if we can’t prove this club still has some life in it, neither I nor Ichiryuu-san can fend off the will of our families much longer.”
Kaname sighed heavily. “That does suck, man. I feel for you. But like I said, I really can’t be the person to help you. Even if I signed on, if I left soon after you’d be back in the same position. Possibly even worse off.”
She turned to make a hasty exit, in order to avoid any greater feelings of guilt that she knew would always get her in trouble for the sake of other people. Just before she could snap the door shut, however, she heard a different voice ask her to wait.
“What do you want, Arc.”
“First off, you were correct in supposing that I would not appreciate that moniker. But more importantly, we still have matters to discuss, miss Kamen Rider.”
Kaname turned around to stare down the blue-flamed specter now borrowing Odakyuu’s body. “No, I don’t think so. The Ektroma’s dead for real this time, and the pen is secure, so no more weird possession problems at this school. Well, besides the one in front of me I guess.”
“I expect you’re being sarcastic with me right now. I know you’re wise enough to realize that there’s more than one pen, and thus more than one Ektroma that will appear. They will all need the might of Calliope to stop them.”
“Well… Good thing I’ve got this superglued to my body then.” Kaname slapped at the belt on her waist.
“Correct. It would behoove you, Kaname, to stick close to your allies. They will need you here, and you will need their skills in time. If you’re looking for an excuse not to run away, consider this it.”
“What a way with persuasion you have. Anyway, I don’t see the connection between me staying here and my conscription as the local superhero.”
“That will also come with time. In any case, I’m ready to make you a deal. I understand your frustration at the situation you’ve been forced into. And while my duties in this time and place align with matters of higher morality, I do not find myself without empathy to your case. Therefore, if you’re willing to continue to fight as Calliope when you are needed, and to heed my advice, I shall consult the Gaia Record to find a way to release you from the belt.”
Kaname was a bit surprised, but she hid it well. She hadn’t expected Archimedes to go that far for her, especially since, as he so haughtily put it, he was concerned with “matters of higher morality”.
“You’re sure? You really mean it?”
“I will do everything in my power.”
This was a decision that had many aspects to consider, but Kaname felt her mind made up fairly quickly. She was tired of considering, and reconsidering, and just thinking about all the ways her actions could blow up in her face, when they inevitably did anyway no matter how much she mulled over them. Sometimes it’s just easiest to play ball.
“Alright then. We’ve got a deal.” Kaname snatched the application form out of Odakyuu’s grasp, where it had suffered slight mangling as Arc hadn’t taken much notice of what was going on with his borrowed vessel at the time. She scribbled her name on it and pushed it back to them.
“Here, hold this. Like that, fingers and all. When you hand the wheel back to Odakyuu he should go submit that before it’s too late.”
“Understood. And Kaname,” Arc called to her as she tried to make her exit once again, “you fought valiantly today. I have confidence in your abilities and potential as a Kamen Rider.”
Kaname felt like she owed him a thanks for this compliment, but she didn’t feel like giving it. “Well… you were right. About some things. Turns out I can’t just stand by doing nothing. Not sure I can call myself a hero or anything like that.”
“That… is not something to be concerned with.”
Before their conversation could be any more prolonged, Kaname snapped the door shut and hurried off down the hall towards the stairwell. Each time she tried to free herself of a troublesome responsibility, she managed to get herself tangled up in another one, like tendrils of seaweed wrapping around her in the ocean. All she wanted to do was to swim to the beach of freedom, if she was to keep up this metaphor. She had just won a fight against a shark, the Ektroma, and freed its small, twitchy sea-otter prey (Yasuda). And Odakyuu and Kokonoka were in there too (a pissy, pinchy crab and a kindly, beautiful sea turtle respectively). And that mysterious masked sea-urchin person, would probably be… well, a sea urchin. Anyway, the point is she was still much wetter than she would like to be.
But maybe an end was in sight. Hang around with Odakyuu and Kokonoka, beat up a few more Ektroma, and with any luck Arc would find a way to get the belt off of her fairly quickly. It was at that station that Kaname disembarked from that train of thought; done, as she had decided earlier, considering all of the potential dangers of her situation. She had stopped worrying about threats that were closer than she realized, closing in faster than she knew, and leading her down a path that she could never prepare herself for.
[ End of Myth 1 ]
Author’s Note:
Holy crap, where did 8 weeks go? If you ever want to make two-plus months go in fast-forward, try having a weekly deadline for serial-fiction posts. Anyway, thank you all so much for anyone who read any amount of this fic. This is the beginning of a potentially-enormous project, one that I have a lot of plans for, but still need to do the grueling work of actually putting into digital ink. So, I’ll answer that burning question right now:
When is Myth 2 coming out? Unfortunately that is a bit TBD. I can tell you that I am writing it right now, and that it shall continue to be on my project short-list until it’s done. However, between other BLP projects requiring more immediate attention and my impending return to Japan to fulfill a 3-month teaching contract in April, it might be a bit of a wait.
So to TL:DR – I am actively working on Myth 2 and beyond, and optimal plan A is to have it start publishing in April or May, to run partially over the course of when I’ll be teaching in Japan. Speaking of which, if you are someone who enjoys seeing pics of Japanese life and weeb culture, feel free to give my instagram a looksee (nagi_kaidashi_kikou). Also, comments and feedback are always encouragement for me to keep working on something, esp when I know there are other people waiting expectantly for it.
oh, also, just to give yall something to chew on in the meantime, I plan on publishing a Fourze fanfic piece that’s been sitting on my drive for a while now. Keep a lookout for that in late March or April.
So yeah. Once again, thanks so much for reading! Yall are great.

How I Got My Agent: Author Michael Haspil
I dreamed of being a writer for most of my life and, although I had undertaken efforts in screenwriting, it wasn’t until 2009 that I decided to commit and try my hand at being a professional author. Always on the hunt for excellent ideas, I kept a journal near my bed so I could write down particularly vivid dreams. One morning, I woke with a doozy. I didn’t remember the dream as a whole, just the overall concept and one line: “I used to hunt vampires for the NSA, now I work vice.”
This was it. This was the one.
This guest post is by Michael Haspil. Haspil is a geeky engineer and nerdy artist. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he had the opportunities to serve as an ICBM crew commander and as a launch director at Cape Canaveral. The art of storytelling called to him from a young age and he has plied his craft over many years and through diverse media. He has written original stories for as lon gas he can remember and has dabbled in many genres. However, science fiction, fantasy, and horror have whispered directly to his soul. When he isn’t writing, you can find him sharing stories with his role-playing group, cosplaying, computer gaming, or collecting and creating replica movie props. Lately, he devotes the bulk of his hobby time to assembling and painting miniatures for his tabletop wargaming addiction. Michael is represented by Sara Megibow of the KT Literary Agency and Adrian Garcia of the Paradigm Talent Agency.
In high school, I was editor of our literary magazine and a theater nerd. No one expected me to pursue a career in the military. They all thought I would be an author. I’ve been a play-it-safe adult, but in this case I was so inspired and excited I had to make a change. I was so sure I could succeed that I actually quit my day job.
To say I was naïve is a massive understatement. I undertook the task of turning that one line into the novel that would become GRAVEYARD SHIFT. As I reworked the novel through subsequent drafts, I achieved a point where I thought it was good enough to send out and began a long query process. I lost count of how many agencies I queried. To my excitement, I received requests for pages from many of them. However, the rejections came later. I estimated that my concept was sound, or at least intriguing enough to get me through the door. Since that’s always as far as I got, I rightly assumed I needed work on my craft.
In the fall of 2009, I attended the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold conference. I remember now, with an ironic smile on my face, that I brought miniature business card-sized CDs of my novel, just in case an agent or editor wanted it right then and there. As you might expect, my experience was somewhat different.
I went to a standing-room-only presentation called, “How to Avoid the Slushpile.” The industry information presented was eye opening and disheartening. At day’s end, I drove home in a funk, aware of the colossal dragon that guarded my path to being a professional author.
[5 Important Tips on How to Pitch a Literary Agent In Person]
I stood at the kitchen trashcan and threw away all the little CDs I’d been so proud of a day before and contemplated not returning to the conference. In the morning, I made the best decision I could. I made myself a strong cup of coffee and drove back. That dragon wasn’t going to slay itself. And, if I didn’t know how to do it, then I was damn sure going to learn.
Over the course of the next year, I joined the Pikes Peak Writers, the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, and attended every single workshop they offered. I became active with three critique groups and entered as many contests as I could. I even placed in some of them. All the while, I reworked my novel.
It paid off in 2011 at the Colorado Gold conference.
I signed up for a workshop with an editor from TOR, Moshe Feder. We worked through our pages and he responded extremely well to my work. The next day, I had a scheduled pitch session with him and it was one of the strangest in my experience. I hardly pitched at all! Since he was already familiar with my concept, I answered questions about my world building and further elaborated on the story. When he requested the full manuscript, I emailed it to him moments after the pitch session. (Pro-tip: It pays to have a completed manuscript when you’re pitching.)
Elated, I regaled my critique partners, all of whom were also attending the conference, with tales of my achievement. Laura Main and Anita Romero, from separate critique groups, both said the same thing, “You need an agent right now.”
Sara Megibow of KT Literary, who I had already researched, was at the conference. She had the passion and drive I was looking for. Though her agency rejected an earlier draft, this time would be different. Not only had I significantly reworked the novel since submitting it, I was coming at it from a different angle and with editorial attention. I made plans to attend her presentation “Bang, Zoom, Pow! The First Thirty Pages” and since I pitch much better in person than on the page, I thought I would try to speak to her after her talk.
During the presentation, Sara made numerous gaming, science fiction, and fantasy references and jokes. Long before she’d finished, I knew she was the agent for me. However, I wasn’t the only one with the idea of conducting impromptu pitches after her talk. Quite the line assembled. I exercised my patience and waited. I told her Moshe was interested and asked if she would consider representing me. Sara requested that I also send her the full manuscript.
When I got home, I fired it off to her, clapped my hands, and contemplated my next novel. I’d finished this one, and it was well on its way to publication, or so I believed. (You’d think somewhere along the line I would stop being naïve. You’d be wrong.)
[Want to land an agent? Here are 4 things to consider when researching literary agents.]
Alas, Sara passed on the story. She wasn’t sure it was the right story for her in that iteration, which is agent-speak for she didn’t love it as it was and it still needed editing. Nevertheless, she left a sliver of a window open. Months passed as I waited for the fateful response from TOR. Nothing came. Ever the optimist, I did a major re-edit of the novel and incorporated Moshe’s notes from the workshop. My inbox mocked me with its lack of emails from TOR.
Then, early in 2012, I got the email. It certainly looked like an offer. I forwarded it to Sara and asked again whether she would consider being my agent. It is very important to Sara that she represent the author and not just a single work and that she meshes well with her clients. We had several conference calls to discuss my vision for the series, other works, and to make sure we were the right fit for one another. About a week later, after Sara had checked out my reworked iteration of the novel, I signed with her. It has been the best decision I’ve made in my writing career.
We’ve battled many lesser wyverns and drakes since, but this summer, that big original dragon is going down. In July, my debut novel, GRAVEYARD SHIFT, about an immortal pharaoh and his vampire partner who must ally with an unsavory cast to thwart an ancient conspiracy, will hit bookstores everywhere.
My advice to aspiring authors: Attend conferences. Not only will you get to meet people in person, but you will open yourself up to a wealth of information in a relatively short amount of time. In just a weekend you can download the type of information it would take you months to accumulate on your own. Most importantly, a conference lets you feel out different agents for one who might be a good fit, sit at their tables for a meal, or schmooze at the bar, and interact outside of a formal presentation. The publishing process is a lot lengthier than many of us would like; a good agent and partner will have to be there every step of the way. You must have the same goals and personalities that mesh well with each other.

Power Tips: How to Power the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IOT) has supplied an opportunity for electricity delivery designers to be innovative and to expand strength answers for a new market segment.
Our thermostats, mild bulbs, switches, and stores are all becoming extra shrewd. This way that those traditionally “dumb” gadgets now require some sort of processor. That way that something additionally needs to provide strength to that processor. The Internet of Things (IOT) has provided an opportunity for strength supply designers to be innovative and to increase electricity solutions for a new market section.
Although the applications may be broadly various, energy necessities of devices for the IOT have a few commonplace trends.
First, these have a tendency to be low-power programs. The processors themselves commonly eat minimal electricity, on the size of 30 mW. Wireless connectivity provides to the power call for, but commonly simplest for quick bursts of time. Some applications might also have subsystems, which includes cameras and sensors, that add to the strength demand. In standard, strength necessities tend to be inside the 50 mW to 500 mW variety, and maximum programs most effective require an unmarried three.3 V or five V rail.
Second, these packages ought to derive their strength from the family AC electricity.
Luckily, most of these “smart” devices already have electricity running to them. Since these gadgets are permanently set up in our homes, there may be no want to layout the electricity supply for a prevalent AC input range (85 VAC to 265 VAC). Rather, this merchandise only needs to be designed for the marketplace in which they’re being offered, as an instance, in North America: one hundred twenty VAC / 60 Hz.
The Wrong Kind of Power
Davia has been to a firewalking right and was now hearing things and seeing shadowy figures inside the corners of her eye. The enjoy had spread out something inside her, something that had ended up scary and tough to control. “Can you take it far away from me?” she pleaded. “I do not need to have this energy anymore.”
I know many human beings who have gone on weekend spiritual retreats that blanketed meditation and a firewall, and they’d observed the revel in a laugh and empowering. Though I wasn’t familiar with the institution that sponsored Davia’s retreat, I’d seen their commercials on the Internet and had met numerous shamans whose names have been associated with the occasion.
“Davia, tell me what you are experiencing,” I said.
It’s like I’ve come to be oversensitive,” she defined. “I feel just like the spirit world is squeezing me. It’s tough to go to the mall now, or anywhere that is crowded. I begin hearing human beings’ mind.”
I endorsed Psychic Protection by William Bloom, an exciting e-book that’s helped several of my students when they felt crushed after starting their third eye for the primary time. Davia disregarded my proposal.
“That’s now not what I’m looking for,” she stated. “I need a person to take this aspect away. It’s like a curse.”
My lips pursed once I heard that phrase: “curse.” I do not accept as true within courses. People have the electricity to create their very own reality, and people who accept as true with they may be cursed do so as it’s easier to blame someone else – or something out of doors themselves – for his or her troubles.
Perhaps what’s took place,” I began, “is that the meditation and firewall have inspired your psychic center, that is something new for you. You would possibly want to think about commencing your intuitive abilities more slowly and lightly. Why don’t you visit meetup.Com and see if there’s a meditation organization near you to join? I’m positive you will experience greater at ease around like-minded folks that’d like that will help you.”
No,” she stated, “that’s now not for me.” She sounded a chunk irritated. “Isn’t there something you may do properly now?”
I sighed and sat back in my chair. I thought of Jane Roberts’ series of books in which she channeled Seth, an ascended master. In one ebook, she related testimonies of human beings calling with requests to interpret their dreams or resolve their issues. One guy who started meditating stated he become contacted by an entity who ordered him to kneel and bow in his presence. Another fellow stated Plato materialized on his bedroom ceiling and he felt forced to grow to be Plato’s slave.

How To Build A Pond – 5 Things To Consider
I do not know everybody who has ever regretted building a pond. However, I do realize numerous folks who would have made a few adjustments to their pond layout if they had regarded how tons a laugh and pride they got out in their ponds. Especially if they stock it with koi fish. These guys are hogs, they may consume from your hand and that they never get complete.
Here are five pointers to don’t forget in case you’re thinking about constructing a pond:
1. Build the pond as massive as your backyard and finances will allow. Most folks start out with a pond that stages in size from 500 to 2,000 gallons. And then, if the room is available, build every other one.
The reason is straightforward. If we inventory it with fish, we start off with some and then want more. There are loads of coloration combos and lots of sorts of fish to select from and one is in no way enough.
Some, like Koi, get truly big and also you must restriction the range of fish to at least one for one hundred
Gallons to keep away from overcrowding. Fish can also require additional water filtration and aeration gadget and that have to be determined all through the layout section. It’s very similar to making plans a swimming pool. Considerations are nearly the identical.
2. Locate the pond wherein it will no longer be in direct sunlight all day. Fish, in particular, koi, need color to help maintain them from stressing out. Plants that do nicely in water may be used or plants in pots located close to the brink of the pond. Anything that gives color to the water will give them comfort from direct daylight.
Overhanging timber ought to be avoided to keep particles out of the water and decrease the preservation necessities.
Three. Don’t skimp on the water pump and filtration device. And get an ultraviolet sterilizer. You can get these nearly anywhere pond kits are bought. Think of it like constructing a swimming pool. If you can not get a professionally designed filtration gadget, you could do some homework and construct a home made filtration device as a way to do the activity.

Are you planning an holiday with friends? What about renting a boat in the Mediterranean Sea for summer 2021?
The summer season has just passed but you are already thinking about the vacations 2021? You can’t wait the time to embrace the sun and the sea and your only wish is to enjoy a good time with your friends? Do not be afraid! You are not the only one.
The period immediately after the summer vacations is the most traumatic, we know, with the return to work and to the normal routine that tests our good mood. And then, which can be the best medicine if not planning the next trip? Follow us in this magnificent dream called to adventure in the Mediterranean with friends on a boat to rent.
Why choose a boat vacation when you are in a group?
Because it’s an ideal solution, whether you’re a team of close-knit friends, a gang of just daring young men, or a mixed group of boys and girls. We tried to give an answer to these questions, hoping to make you dream about your next destination in the Mediterranean Sea for vacations 2021. A dream that can easily become reality!
We talked about it with Giulia Di Leo, Founder & General Manager of Your Boat Holiday. Expert in the charter world, she answered our questions:
What kind of vacation do you live onboard a boat rental?
Whatever type of vacation you are looking for, whether it is pure relaxation or wild nightlife, if you decide to rent a boat in the Mediterranean you will not be disappointed. The best way to live this experience is by doing it in a group, even better if of close friends.
From the very first moments, you will breathe an atmosphere of enthusiasm and desire to participate in life on board. As you go along that you will then familiarize yourself with the boat you will be more and more comfortable and happy with having opted to rent a boat rather than rent a house on the land.
Men, women, or a mix, what is the ideal group to rent a boat?
There is not all this difference actually. The important thing is that you like being together and the sea is for you an important element for your vacations. Giulia, for a  group of girls, recommends the rental of a catamaran because, in addition to offering larger spaces (always remember not to bring too many things on board!), both in the cabin and on the dashboard, is more stable and easier to steer than the sailboat.
For kids, perhaps in search of emotions, the sailboat can be experienced as a way to put yourself to the test trying with turns, side winds, and even sustained speed. Obviously, all this guided by an experienced skipper.
What differences do you feel compared to a vacation at the classic sea?
Surely it is a different way to discover and experience the sea, maybe even upside down. We are used to looking at the sea from the beach, you will discover that even look at the coast from a boat has its charms. If we then talk about benefits, I can think of for example those periods of the year when the beaches are crowded with people, where you have to run in the morning soon to carve out your own space and find some peace in the general bustle seems a utopia. You can forget all this onboard a boat. Each occupant is guaranteed the space necessary to carry out any activity. The group is then free to go ashore whenever and wherever he wants, with no time or time limits. The boats at rental never close!
What are the best places to visit during your boat charter?
The Mediterranean in general offers us perfect locations for this type of vacation. I think that places like Sardinia, the Amalfi Coast, and Sicily, with the Aeolian Islands, are paradise to visit at least once in a lifetime. With their views and coastlines, they lend themselves optimally to tours by yacht. After all, who makes us do it to stay in the same place if we have the possibility to move quickly by floating on water?
A boat vacation there will allow you to wake up in the morning in a different harbor and dine every night enjoying a different sunset. If we were to find some negative side? Obviously, it is useless to be naive. Some negative side of living onboard is found, especially related to the sometimes cramped spaces to share and the privacy that at certain times may be limited. Nothing that can not be addressed by a group of friends, with the relaxed smile of those who are enjoying a unique experience.
