i had assumed an arquebus was the size of a pistol, like a flintlock pistol maybe (especially because that's how it's depicted in his jr year artwork), but i got curious and looked it up and gang i cannot stress enough that this gun is, on average, larger than riz gukgak. this is an arquebus:

by even the most optimistic estimations, riz gukgak is four feet tall max. the average arquebus according to google (and gun geeks feel free to chime in if this is wrong) is about 4-5 feet long.

i had been picturing riz with an inconspicuous, easily concealed handgun that wouldn't raise any eyebrows, but no, riz's primary weapon is fully the same size as him, possibly even taller. and if you don't think that's goddamn hilarious then i don't know what to tell you

I’m pissed at my hearing aids so here’s some deaf!Riz headcanons:

Has always been hard of hearing, but it wasn’t until roughly midway through freshman year (i.e. when he was firing a gun all the time) that it became a serious problem 

Relies on lip reading more than he even realises. Uses his lip reading to eavesdrop on people from across the room. 

On more than one occasion during freshman year, the rest of the Bad Kids will make plans and accidentally leave Riz behind because he hadn’t heard they were all going somewhere. After the second time, Fig always Messages Riz as she stands to leave, not even thinking about it. By midway through sophomore year, Adaine and Kristen have also gotten into the habit of messaging Riz as they leave. He does sometimes get bombarded with three “we’re leaving” messages, even when he is aware that they’re leaving.

Fig is also almost always the first one to notice when Riz has zoned out of a conversation when they’re in the cafeteria or at Basrar’s and he can’t hear what people are saying. She’ll try to bring him back into the conversation she isn’t perfect and unfortunately it’s not long before Riz gives up trying to pay attention and zones out again. However, he does get a lot of solving puzzles done when he’s zoned out.

You know he’s deep in his conspiracy boards when he’s taken his hearing aids out to focus.

He also absolutely will just take out his hearing aids when he’s done having a conversation with someone. He doesn’t care if they think it’s rude. If they want to carry this on, they can make the effort.

He has had to have someone cast locate objects on said hearing aids multiple times because those things are expensive and he knows his mom can’t afford to replace them but he loses them constantly

As part of the spy gear, Riz’s hearing aids allow him to cast detect thoughts once a day

Because he never really realised he was deaf until he was 14, he never learned Solesian Sign Language and he knows he probably should but he’s just so busy in Junior Year and he normally has his hands full anyway so there’s not much use

Hey Mom, Dad and Lil' Bro!

13. Calm Days, Exciting Nights

“Hey Mom, Dad and Lil’ Bro, I had a great afternoon! So, I did a couple of tests on this giant armor. There are a bunch of buttons and levers inside and everything in it looks so advanced! I think I got most of the features noted down. But the armor seems to be missing some limbs on the backside. There was nothing left in the workshop, so I don’t think I missed anything. But it is completely functional otherwise! So proud of myself!

It was getting late and a storm was approaching. So we decided to camp in the basement instead. I’m not sure if the building would have stood the wind.

Coming morning, the Prince was quite surprised to find us down there. But all the information we gathered has been of use to him so far! They packed the armors and brought them back to the court. We stayed here because we still need to find a source of energy that the armors use. But they did leave some supplies for us. Even some books and games. One of them was a lore book of the Prince’s realm. Quite a lot of useful information in that book. Also one of the Prince’s assistants was ordered to stay here as well. They are a bit of a quiet type but any helping hand is always useful.

Oh, also remember that liquor bottle? Yeah, the Prince loved it! In fact he handed me 400 gold for it! And a magic ring! This is so much money! I have to find a good place for safekeeping.

...I actually have to be honest with something, I left something out from my last letter. We are not alone here. There are these other creatures here. They look like weavers but mechanical. They don’t seem hostile though! Very skittery if anything, in fact! They have been reconstructing the town we’ve been resting in, bit by bit. And otherwise they ignored us, mostly keeping their distance and only appearing during the night.

Serwacy actually saw from which direction these metal weavers came from. So, we decided we would try to establish contact with them. They seem more knowledgeable about this place than us. And having more friendly contacts is always a boon!

So the new goal is to find where the spiders exactly come from and maybe gain some new information. Maybe they can help with the energy problem that the armor had.

It is quite a couple days of travel, though. So thankful that I got the book to read while we travel. First night camp was special, though! One of those metal weavers passed by our camp! A small one. Rose actually tried to communicate with them. I’m not quite sure if she was successful. The metal weavers don’t really speak so communication was difficult.

But it stayed with us for the rest of the night! In fact it replaced the cloth from one of our tents completely. The thread is a lot more durable now. I guess calling them weavers wasn’t too inapt.
