Hi! Hope you’re doing great!
I love all of your advice :), it’s so helpful.
I’m currently in college and I would love to work for the EU or UN one day (fingers crossed?). How could I be in spaces that’ll lead me there - even though I’m a student? And how could I prepare for those spaces and pioneering for advocacy for the “voiceless?”
Thanks so much!
Hi love! Thank you so much.
I actually know a couple of women who interned/worked for the UN! So, from what I know, here are some important skills and experiences you should consider acquiring to work at these types of organizations:
Become as fluent in English and French as possible. Bonus points for additional languages including German, Spanish, Italian, etc.
Study and focus on gaining internship/volunteer experience in public policy, international relationships, political science, sustainable development, nonprofit management, pre-law/environmental science, and ethics
Consider applying for a volunteer, internship, or study abroad opportunity with the UN (I don't know anything about working with the EU, but that sounds so cool!)
Intern/volunteer with an NGO or another international nonprofit (Women for Women is a great organization!)
Visit or attend events at local international embassies
Volunteer, intern, or work in some capacity for events hosted by influential international figures (foreign ambassadors, global human rights activists, etc. – I met one of these women at a Fashion Week event a few years ago, so think outside of the box. Consider what events draw an international crowd in your area and go from there)
Leverage your university's and professors' resources to help get into clubs, networking events, internship opportunities, and informational interviews with people working at these organizations or the same/adjacent fields
Hope this helps xx

NEWS: From ALLATRA Volunteers and the Creative Society Partner Project
Tumblr media
ALLATRA volunteers and the “Creative Society” partner project operate globally, uniting the minds and hearts of people around the world. Our goal is to save the planet from destruction and create a better future for all of humanity.
It is worth noting that ALLATRA volunteers and the Creative Society are looking for and seeing opportunities for large-scale activities to save the planet!
##NEWS:
In Kazakhstan: Participants of the ALLATRA partner project - “Creative Society” - presented the Climate Report “On the Progression of Climate Cataclysms on Earth and Their Catastrophic Consequences” to the Department of Emergency Situations in Almaty. This report is the result of a thorough analysis by ALLATRA scientists and provides compelling evidence for the need for urgent action to overcome the climate crisis.
In Madrid: Volunteers of the “Creative Society” have launched an advertising campaign at the post office. People waiting in line can get information about the climate crisis and how to solve it. This is a good opportunity to inform a large number of people about the climate threat.
In Colombia: Volunteers of the “Creative Society” participated in an event organized by the “Women for Life” movement. They shared information about climate change with the guests, presented a climate report that describes not only the real reasons for climate change, but more importantly, the opportunities and real solutions to this climate collapse. Information about the Climate Report was passed on to the local mayor.
In the evening, on the main square of the city, there was a broadcast of the documentary film “Water from the Air”, which demonstrates innovative technologies for solving the climate crisis. The Water from the Air film is available on the official channels and resources of both ALLATRA and the Creative Society.
In this film, advanced inventors spoke about the unique technology of water extraction from the atmosphere, the mass introduction of which will not only provide each person with an unlimited amount of clean drinking water but also partially stabilize and slow down the growth of cataclysms, which will allow scientists to buy time to stop cataclysms and save the Earth for future generations.
What becomes clear after watching this movie is that taking water out of the atmosphere solves 70% of the problem of worsening climate change. This makes it possible to realize several UN Sustainable Development Goals at once.
The movie presents a clear plan for the introduction of this advanced technology for detailed study and implementation by experts. This worldwide project is one of the main puzzles of saving the world.
ALLATRA also includes world-class leaders in its activities. The President of ALLATRA met with Pope Francis and discussed the problem of climate change with him. She presented him with the Climate Report and stressed that this is one of the most pressing problems facing humanity.
We cannot sit idly by while the planet dies. Each of us must take part in the fight against the climate crisis.
Let’s unite around the idea of ALLATRA and the “Creative Society”. This is our planet, and only together can we save it!

UN 2024 - INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CAMELIDS
The United Nations declared 2024 the International Year of Camelids (IYC 2024). The Year will highlight how camelids are key to the livelihoods of millions of households across over 90 countries. From alpacas to Bactrian camels, dromedaries, guanacos, llamas, and vicuñas, camelids contribute to food security, nutrition and economic growth as well as holding a strong cultural significance for communities across the world.
Camelids play an important role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to the fight against hunger, the eradication of extreme poverty, the empowerment of women and the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. From providing milk, meat and fibre for communities to transport for products and people, and organic fertilizer, camelids thrive where other livestock species cannot survive.
Camelids play a key role in the culture, economy, food security and livelihoods of communities in Andean highlands and in the arid and semi-arid lands in Africa and Asia, including Indigenous Peoples. Even in extreme climatic conditions they continue to produce fibre and nutritious food. Indeed, the International Year of Camelids presents a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the role of camelids in building resilience to climate change – particularly in mountains and arid and semi-arid lands.
The International Year of Camelids 2024 aims to build awareness of the untapped potential of camelids and to call for increased investment in the camelid sector, advocating for greater research, capacity development and the use of innovative practices and technologies.
Happy New year greetings to you all.

The Biden administration insists that Israel has an obligation to defend itself but should minimize civilian harm in the process.

Biden admin officials see proof their strategy is working in hostage deal
Some officials say the agreement is a “vindication,” while others insist it was just the necessary move at this point in the war.
The Biden administration insists that Israel has an obligation to defend itself but should minimize civilian harm in the process.
Over recent weeks, the U.S. worked to get 100 aid trucks a day into Gaza from Egypt and is in touch with humanitarian groups on how to further alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in the enclave.
But the administration remains wary about Netanyahu’s endgame and seeming lack of a plan for what to do once Hamas is defeated. There was no sense that the pause would turn into a lengthier cease-fire, a senior administration official said. And there was some concern in the administration about an unintended consequence of the pause: that it would allow journalists broader access to Gaza and the opportunity to further illuminate the devastation there and turn public opinion on Israel.

Israel investigates an elusive, horrific enemy: Rape as a weapon of war
On October 7, 2023, combatants from Gaza overran 22 Israeli communities, killed at least 1,200 and took 240 hostage in the surprise attack. But their greater goal, sexual trauma specialists say, was to introduce terror against women — and children and other unarmed civilians — as a means of spreading fear.

There has been much talk of war crimes in the Israel-Gaza conflict. But will anyone actually be prosecuted?
The Hamas-Israel conflict has unfolded with such brutality and savagery, many people now see it as an arena for possible war crimes prosecutions. Hamas atrocities against Israeli civilians on October 7 have been followed by the devastating Israeli assault on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The 24/7 media coverage presents daily evidence of war crimes. The international community from the United Nations Secretary-General to various UN agencies and UN Special Rapporteurs have called out war crimes during the conflict against civilians, and especially children.

Nov 7 - The Battle of Seattle and the Rise of Indymedia
PRE-LECTURE & HOT TAKE
The Battle in Seattle was a pivotal moment in the global justice movement. It was a powerful demonstration of how activists from various single-issue silos came together to challenge the undemocratic power of global corporate entities such as the World Trade Organization. This event marked the birth of a movement that aimed to reclaim our voice and influence the narrative.
I really liked the idea of the carnival protests. I think that it was a good PR move for the movement because the optics surrounding law enforcement attacking a protest of a celebratory nature, including people in turtle suits, is a nightmare. Despite the public outcry that accompanies these poor optics, law enforcement still proceeded to attack people. This festive-coded stunt design to provoke law enforcement reminds me of the suffragettes and their strategy to provoke police to spark media outrage. However, I would argue that the women's movement had more action logic than the many groups of the anti-globalist movement because it is not entirely clear what people in turtle costumes are fighting for. I would guess the group would advocate for turtles, but not necessarily the saving of turtles by taking down global entities.
Using the "Banner Hang" tactic was an excellent way to rally other Americans and visiting activists. The banner shows directions toward democracy versus the WTO. This example of a banner reflects the definition of "boldly articulate a demand" as it ushers people in the path of change or complicity. The Battle in Seattle was the perfect situation to make a public service announcement. The hanging banner shows how much planning went into this protest and how much this issue means to people.
I enjoyed this reading's throwback to Noam Chomsky and the propaganda model. I enjoyed reading the concept through different styles of voice and terms. I thought that revisiting this nuanced subject brought me more clarity about the filters and how alt media fits in.
The birth of Indymedia seemed to be such an exciting time. I think it is essential to have media that emphasizes democracy, equality, openness, and hierarchical structure. It is a shame that very few forms of Indymedia are left. However, it is important to note that the lapse in Indymedia has replaced social media and, therefore, stronger connections and broader audiences.
My hot take is a question. Given that social media had expanded the breadth of resources, audiences, sponsorship opportunities, and more, why did indymedia fail? I would have thought that the birth of social media would have led to a positive development for Indymedia. However, Indymedia London in London, Ontario, has been inactive on Twitter since 2012. The text explains that the hurdles include issues surrounding stagnation and burrowing into a niche, the deep reliance on volunteer labour, the possibility of becoming reliant on the government and repression by the government. The rebellious and radical network that fought against neoliberalism and globalism had a seemingly strong spirit, so why did the flame of Indymedia burn out?
POST-LECTURE / MODERN DAY CONNECTION / REVISED TAKE
The media landscape in 1999 was evolving with the rise of video cameras and a mix of traditional platforms such as TV, radio, and magazines. Activists seized opportunities to communicate through various creative actions, from early morning banner drops to peaceful protests in turtle suits and symbolic actions like damaging a Nike store.
Seeing the footage was jarring. However, police brutality is normalized today on channels such as X, TikTok, and the more formal news routes. I cannot imagine the terror of schoolchildren when they were stuck in the crowd! The kettling tactic was widely "un-Canadian." I had a hard time understanding how this tragedy occurred on our Territory. However, then, I think about what was said in the lecture: "Canadians think we are so different from the States, but this is a problematic stance because we are complicit in the violence in our own country." The videos provided clear evidence of the evaporation of the difference between police and military.
I think that the Battle of Seattle has similar elements to ongoing protests worldwide based on the devastating humanitarian crisis occurring in the Gaza Strip. People from all different walks of life are coming together for a joint mission of achieving a ceasefire, much like there were silos of NGOs and other activist groups against the WTO.
These groups have also used creative disruption tactics like breaking into the venue where Secretary of State Antony Bilken's testimony occurred, demanding a ceasefire. While these groups worldwide each have their prerogative, they agree on one thing: the need for a ceasefire.
My revised take is that I can see how Indymedia failed. The alternative form of communication relied on mailing lists, chat channels, and conferences, all things that have floundered in the wake of social media. The inherent reliance on volunteer work within the structure of Indymedia makes it more understandable that this media form did not adapt. I see now that the failure of Iindymedia created space for social media to thrive.

"Unearthing Hidden Brilliance: A Transformative Student Interaction in Rural Education"
• Dr. Sekar Srinivasan, The UN Educationist
31 May 2023, Monday
Dear friends, today I wish to share a remarkable and rare experience I had with a group of students. One of my students is a government school headmaster in a rural village near Tiruchirappalli, TN. He had arranged an interactive session by the students and for the students, with 102 girls and 112 boys participating. He had invited myself, another college professor, and my PhD student to navigate the session.
The program started around 10 AM, and the students were so involved that we had to arrange lunch for them through a village headman. About 50 parents, both men and women, along with some teachers, participated as well.
Initially, the program began in a very formal way, with some students talking about academic challenges and coaching difficulties they experience due to a shortage of staff, resources, and the geographical isolation of the rural area from the town. After an hour, I noticed the momentum gaining within the students, and they started to interact more freely and with decorum.
With the permission of the headmaster and other parents, I encouraged the children to be frank and share their inhibitions. They took the opportunity to discuss challenges and chart possible solutions. To my astonishment, nearly 40 girl children from 10th to 12th standard volunteered to point out many issues clearly and in simple expressions.
The parents were moved to tears, unable to believe the rich potential and clear-cut observations these children had. Their communication ability and team spirit were remarkable. When we offered lunch at 12.30 noon, they unanimously said they wanted to continue discussing solutions, considering this golden opportunity of interaction as a life-changing eye-opener for them.
We continued eagerly. I was deeply touched by the remarkable suggestions. One girl named Manimozhi aptly lived up to the meaning of her name and pointed out how our curriculum in high school and higher secondary school should be modified for real-time situations. Her maturity was awe-inspiring.
She suggested that education at this level should be oriented towards real-life situations with moral values, especially considering that many rural girls only complete their education with schools. She elaborated on how families should be run with natural and harmonious ways, fostering love and affection between children, relatives, and each family's responsibility towards society. She emphasized life skills development, entrepreneurship details based on demographics, basic banking, investment formalities, small trade sequences, and legalities.
Other students then talked about health hygiene, habit formation, and the values of good friendship. At one stage, all the elders assembled were spellbound and spontaneously stood, continuously clapping for more than two minutes. Many were in tears and started hugging the children in appreciation.
It was a wonderful experience in my life of teaching since 1975. The interaction unearthed the treasure of our students, who are capable in many ways with innovative ideas and methods. I couldn't sleep for two days as the observations and suggestions were so significant in making school education much more worthy.
Regards,
Dr. S. Sekar

How to Win Scholarships and Grants – State of Wyoming
The State of Wyoming offers a few ways for students to earn scholarships. Wyoming students can use these funds for access to various higher education programs at the University of Wyoming and several community colleges. The scholarship programs are administered by the Wyoming Department of Education.
Below, we offer a list of scholarships offered by the State of Wyoming with descriptions and relevant links.
While Wyoming does not have the most numerous amount of state scholarships, the Hathaway Scholarship can be quite generous in funding. For this prize, it’s important to understand its eligibility requirements because it can make a big difference in the amount of scholarship money that you qualify for.
So, let’s get to the state scholarships offered for Wyoming residents.
Wyoming Scholarship Programs
Hathaway Scholarship
The Hathaway Scholarship offers eligible high school graduates an opportunity to attend the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college. There are four tiers of this scholarship plus a need-based award. To be eligible, students must maintain a certain GPA (between 2.5 and 3.5) and meet various class requirements.
The four pillars of the Hathaway Scholarship are: Honors, Performance, Opportunity, and Provisional.
Award amounts vary depending on the tier for which a student qualifies. Prize money is as follows: Honors – $1,680, Performance – $1,260, Opportunity – $840, and Provisional $840.
If students have $2,000 or more in unmet financial need, they may qualify for the need-based tier. Need is calculated based on a students completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
Douvas Memorial Scholarship
The Douvas Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Wyoming high school student who demonstrates financial need and motivation to attend college. To be eligible for this scholarship fund, students must be Wyoming residents between the ages of 18 and 22. The scholarship must be used at a Wyoming community college or at the University of Wyoming.
This scholarship’s value is $500.
Wyoming Grant Programs
The State of Wyoming does not offer any college grants. However, the Hathaway Scholarship does include a need-based tier and there are various need-based financial aid programs at the University of Wyoming and Wyoming’s community colleges.
Find More Scholarships and Grants for Wyoming College Students
Given that the State of Wyoming has fewer state scholarships available than elsewhere, it’s important to know what other resources can help you pay for college or university. Put simply, there are many. In particular, there are numerous private scholarship awards for students pursuing higher education.
It’s important to know that there are a lot of charities, businesses, religious organizations, non-profits, and many other institutions that offer money for students attending college. The types of scholarships are also quite broad. For example, there are grants and scholarships for students enrolled in high school, students majoring in a particular field or pursuing a career in high-need areas, scholarships for students from certain counties, scholarships for African-American students, scholarships for Hispanic students, and scholarships for women in STEM. There are also many scholarships that are based on hobbies and volunteer service. Overall, you should know that you can likely qualify for hundreds or even thousands of scholarships.
While this sounds overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. You can consult our  free scholarship finder to get started. Beyond this, you can speak with your school’s guidance counselor, college financial aid office, or check in with your community library. These resources can connect you with local scholarships that are typically less competitive.
When submitting applications, you should also know what a scholarship committee looks for. This can dramatically improve your chances of winning an award. You’ll want to understand the mission of a scholarship and speak to how you serve those values. Your personal statement is the best place to make this case.
All in all, scholarships and grants are great way to help avoid student loans. But, they also help strengthen your profile for future opportunities. Winning money for school conveys something positive about you and that can be an asset in things like competitive employment opportunities, graduate school applications, law applications, medical school applications, and much more. So, don’t end your research here. Keep going and keep applying.

Samantha is one of eight United Nations Volunteers (UNV) working as part of the UNDP-UNV Graduate Initiative. She and three fellow UNVs work in the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission Office (SIECO) while four work for the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP). The programme incorporates volunteer-based solutions through the mobilization of volunteers to support the work of these institutions through research and awareness, communication, advocacy, procurement and event logistics. Launched in 2021, the Initiative is led by the Strengthening the Electoral Cycle in the Solomon Islands Project with financial support from the Australian Government. Young people all over the world are different because of their unique traditions, mentalities and environments in which they live and interact, but the challenges they face are similar, as they try to work out their directions, seek recognition and acceptance, strive to get employed and attempt to participate in the political process of elections.  William, Samantha, Peter and Jason are UN Volunteers, who work with the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission since the launch of the UNV Graduate initiative in 2021.  United by their belief in democracy and peace, they hold different roles and responsibilities but equally contribute to the Commission’s efforts to promote and uphold democracy within the electoral cycle and processes in the country.
Tumblr media
Jason, Media and Public Relations Assistant Jason serves as a Media and Public Relations Assistant, writing press releases, developing social media content, and interacting with the media.  Jason’s work supporting many awareness and advocacy events for the Commission has enabled the volunteer family to inform the public about elections.  “Volunteering with United Nations is a lifetime opportunity, and the value of volunteering is essential. We are strongly committed to reinforcing the mandate,” Jason asserts.

Samantha, Civic and Voter Awareness Assistant He added, “Our experience with the UN Volunteers program contributes not only to our career development but also helps us see the bigger picture and the future we want for our country.”  This is also true for Samantha who serves as a Civic and Voter Awareness Assistant with the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission Office.  Samantha advises electoral stakeholders about the challenges of boosting access to information and building the bridge of trust between voters and candidates.  One of the biggest highlights for her was helping the Commission organize the celebration for the International Day of Democracy on September 15. The open-air event hosted a number of tent towns where people could engage in activities to learn more about the history of Democracy Day and its connection to the Electoral Commission, the Office of the Political Parties, and electoral processes. The event hosted government and ministry officials, partners from civil society organizations, women and youth groups, and members of the people with disabilities (PWDs) community. Samantha used the opportunity to boost people’s knowledge about the Commission’s role.

“We created a space where students could have a dialogue with representatives from the Commission and the Office of the Registrar," Samantha describes. "This was a special scenario where young people interacted with the government to learn more about elections and the electoral processes taking place in the country.”  William Osifooa supports the Electoral Commission in the planning, development, and execution of procurement plans in alignment with the mandate and priorities of the Electoral Commission and the Solomon Island Government Procurement Rules and Policies.

William William strongly believes in effective, accountable, and transparent institutions that promote democracy. He believes that his role would be greatly enhanced with equal participation of women and men in the procurement process including vendor registration, selection of vendors, and the procuring of assets.  “Participation builds a better future,” says William.  “Even though procurement staff are the behind-the-scenes heroines and heroes, we have the power to change and build a more equal world by engaging diverse sectors of the population, including civil society organizations, the private sector, and academia in every procurement request we work on.”  UN Volunteers like Jason, Samantha, and William are highly qualified, motivated young professionals committed to serving provinces and communities in promoting peaceful elections for a peaceful Solomon Islands.  Commenting on the work of the UN Volunteers, Ms. Taeasi Sanga, one of the Commissioners of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission, describes their engagement as a “fresh approach to electoral work” and key to “long-term involvement of youth in the country’s development.” “By opening the Commission’s doors to the youth, we are automatically getting closer to the voters. Thanks to the innovative ideas of the volunteers, we have increased our interaction with communities, which had also increased the turnout of people in the recent provincial elections.” According to Mr. Michael Burke, UNDP Chief Technical Adviser and Project Manager for Strengthening the Electoral Cycle in the Solomon Islands Project, the UN Volunteer Initiative is providing UNDP with a “unique opportunity to change public perceptions about the abilities and participation of young people in the development processes of the country.” Mr. Burke also believes that the active and visible involvement of youth in the public sphere “lays the foundation for their increased positive engagement, their social and economic integration in the communities across the country.” The UNDP Strengthening the Electoral Cycle in the Solomon Islands Project (SECSIP) supports the national authorities to conduct credible and inclusive electoral processes with the overarching objective of strengthening the link between elections and other key governance processes and institutions contributing to social cohesion and the development of a pluralistic society. SECSIP is implemented by UNDP Solomon Islands with financial support from the Australian Government. Read the full article

May Day - May 1,2024
MAY DAY - A TRIBUTE TO LABOUR AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
🔘Durga K, The UN Women Designate
May Day, celebrated on the 1st of May worldwide, holds deep significance as a day to honor the contributions and struggles of the labor movement. As an educationist, I believe it is crucial to understand the values and impact of this day.
Historically, May Day commemorates the Haymarket affair of 1886 in Chicago, where workers demanded an eight-hour workday. This event symbolizes the long-standing fight for workers’ rights and social justice, highlighting the importance of fair wages, safe working conditions, and collective bargaining.
May Day is not just a remembrance of past struggles but also a celebration of the progress made in labor rights. It serves as a reminder that the rights and well-being of workers are essential for a just and equitable society.
In the educational sphere, May Day offers a valuable opportunity to teach students about the history of labor movements, the importance of activism, and the power of collective action. It instills values of empathy, solidarity, and social responsibility, encouraging students to stand up for justice and equality.
Celebrating May Day in schools can involve various activities, such as discussions, presentations, or creative projects that highlight the significance of the labor movement. It is a day to reflect on the challenges faced by workers worldwide and to recommit ourselves to supporting their rights and dignity.
May Day reminds us of the ongoing struggle for social justice and the importance of solidarity among all members of society. As educators, let us use this day to inspire our students to be agents of change, advocating for a more just and humane world for all.
