Honestly- this panel is really scary for me:

Not just because Clutch is a creepy grabby guy or Mimic's the kind of guy where when he's threatened, he'll literally stab you in the back. The fact that Clutch grabs his arm when he's actively frightened and trying to get away. And Clutch is doing it because he knows Mimic is scared and trying to get away. That's scary.

Clutch has a habit of... clutching onto people as a way to build their trust. We see this multiple times. Even strangely with Mimic who actively hates people, let alone them grabbing at him.

And up to this point- Mimic has never seen him mad. Every time he's suggested a threat, this possum's been cool and collected. Almost allowing Mimic- the constantly paranoid backstabber- to lower his guard.

But what we know about Clutch is that you don't want to see him angry. This man will take away the basic care rights of a chao and lock it away with multiple locks in a covered cage. Mimic probably doesn't know that, but chances are that he's been alert this whole time.

And no- I get it. Mimic is no better with chao or wisps than Clutch. We've seen him literally punt one just to make Sonic look bad. Mimic is a bad guy.

Both he and Clutch are manipulative evil men. But like at the same time- this man does not like to get threatened. He goes to extremes to get away from or expose threats. He does not like having an out. And we see how he will react when he's not actively able to find an out.

He panics. He stammers and panics. Which opens up a lot of analysis for his cowardice character and evil motivations, but let's circle back to the point that this man panics under pressure or when threatened.

Clutch is someone who could definitely hurt him if he wanted to. Clutch's hand literally shakes on the gun-cane he's holding. This is the first time Clutch has actively not been calm and collected and Mimic knows its bad news. So he actively tries to leave before he snaps.

But Clutch doesn't snap. He doesn't let him leave. He puts on a fake smile and tries to tell him he's fine- it's not his fault. He can fix this.

I know its two terrible people, capable of defending themselves, probably not that bad. But to be someone that actively does not like being put in danger and having someone you thought you could trust actively becoming dangerous just hold you in place while they continue to rant, telling you "no no- it's okay. Its all just me- not you." And this is seconds before we get Clutch's really creepy angry face (which I forgot to screenshot). He's got a loose grip on Mimic's arm, so it's not as bad, but still... ladies and gentlemen, if someone grabs your arm like this in the middle of them being upset and tries to tell you, "hey it's okay. I'm just upset for personal reasons." That's someone you want to keep your distance from for a while. Clutch knew Mimic was upset and that's why he grabbed his arm. (he did the same to Jewel too btw).

I has a headcanon that billy can understand felines, whether that's because he has a tiger familiar or it's just from spending so much time around tawny os up to you, take your pick

I love imagining damian being secretly super jealous that billy can hold a conversation with Alfred the cat even though it's his cat but he low-key gets over it because now he knows what Alfred the cat actually likes and can pamper them more thoroughly

I also love the idea of billy having to play telephone with any other animal because it only works with felines for example billy needs information on [insert plot information] and the only witness was a raccoon and so billy needs the street cat relay what the raccoon is saying and to ask the raccoon specific questions

But these are just my thoughts and I wanna hear yours

I am so sorry I am answering this super late, hun, just know that this ask has always been drawing a cute visual in my head where Billy is surrounded by cats like a little disney prince 🤴

I do think that his omnilingualism does expand to all the languages of the universe that has ever or will ever exist, so I feel like it's safe to say that he can understand the ancient language of little meow meows.

I do agree that spending so much time with Mr. Tawky Tawny could possibly influence Billy's language abilities to learn animal languages, but I also believe that with Billy being the Champion of Magic, Billy might sometimes absorb the magical effects from being Captain Marvel. Just as a headcanon of mine.

For example; Captain Marvel can fly? Billy can levitate a little (as a treat) if he concentrates enough. Captain Marvel speaks every language? Billy can talk to animals like a tiny Dr. Doo little.

Gosh imagine that, Billy using his magical talents to help magical familiars and beasts, maybe that's how he earns his money to pay rent as a homeless child. Can't get a job? Just use magic to open up a magical veterinarian clinic, no body will raise alarm at a child doctor if the patients are mystical animals!

Woops I went on a little ramble there, buddy, back to your ask! I always adore any chance to have Billy interact with the supersons, so it would be insanely funny to have Billy hold this ability over Damian's head if ever ever doubts the power of magic to Billy's face.

Damian: Magic is overrated. The only people who depend on magic are the ones who can't do anything without it.

Billy: Oh okay, that's alright, I guess. It's just too bad you won't ever know what Alfred (the cat) wants for his birthday.

Damian: ...what?

Billy: Yeah, the poor little guy is going to feel so sad when he doesn't get what he wants on his big day. All because his owner doesn't understand what he's saying, nobody does...oh wait a minute, somebody does :3

Opossums?

Listen, I know in my heart that Hyrule's dark world form would be an opossum. They're crafty little guys that *persist* even when it feels like the entire world's against them. They're tough, they're intimidating, they're heckin adorable, they do a lot of good (like, for example, eating ticks), and I have an incredibly soft spot for em both 🫶

Surge doesn't try to kill Clutch because she's trying to do better as a person and become a real hero, just like she and Kit said they would. That and they're in an incredibly tight situation.

It's hard for her to hold back, as shown by her causing the storm on the roof afterwards to let off steam, even though it is incredibly tempting to beat the shit outta him right then and there. Honestly, me too.

But he has a lot of influence over them. He's the head of a giant corporation and a good manipulator. Picture this, if they did straight up kill him, how would they look to the masses?

They'd be seen as monsters.

Turning against Clutch in any way, makes them into targets for bad publicity. Whether it was set up by him as puppeteer, or caused incidentally by their actions.

Man do I LOVE watching the Sonic Fandom forget/ignore how fucking old Clutch is for their shipping purposes. /sarc /neg

Clutch was in RETIREMENT when we met him in CR&BB.

He left retirement after that to fight the NEW GENERATION of heroes. He was originally the villain for a past generation of heroes.

Also, considering that Ian Flynn has said on the Bumblekast that the IDW comics are written with an American audience in mind, that means Clutch is ATLEAST in his 60s. And even that is iffy young, considering he has been retired enough for an entire generation to not be considering him a threat.

If anything,

he's probably in his 80s.

70s, if lucky.

(This makes him likely the oldest mobian villain that isn't some sort of god.)

I get it, shipping is fun. I'm a multishipper myself in this fandom. Yes, ages are wiped. They have been for quite a while, but Clutch has been explicitly described as old in his lore and backstory.

We need to acknowledge his age and ship him appropriately so we don't look like or become gross weirdos.
