Yesterday I was asked how I managed to interleave the right and left hand when playing the open close technique. Here you can see how I did it. I play in unison for a fixed amount of bars, and then I separate my hands out. Remember I’m left-handed so I’m leading with the left hand here. I usually go from two bars all the way up to 50. It’s similar to the famous “stone killer” exercise but applied to open close. In the photos you can see some close-ups of my practice kit that I have upstairs of my studio. It’s a Bill Sanders practice drum set. The manufactured by Bill in the UK and they’re really high quality. Yesterday I had a bit of a breakthrough in my practising of the open close technique. I was able to interleave both hands to produce a single stroke roll. I practice this technique every day for 15 minutes. It’s taken 15 days to reach the point where I can play a roll which in the grand scheme of things is fairly quick even though sometimes it felt like I was never going to get it. I feel like a big hump has been crossed. Now I just need to keep slowly upping the tempo and eventually I’ll reach my target. When learning a new technique you can sometimes feel like you’re never going to get it. This is why it’s a good idea to write down when you practice how long you practice for and what the speed is. When you forget your practice pad during a break in teaching…. Use the desk! My open close technique is progressing. The left hand is somewhat faster than the right although it doesn’t quite have the same control (I’m left-handed). The right hand seems to have a little more snap and it feels more even if a little more rigid. I’m starting to be able to interleave the technique although annoyingly it’s easier to do open close on the left hand and fingers on the right hand. Todays open close technique practice included practising the technique on each hand individually and some unisons. I work from two bars to 50 bars on each hand. It takes about 15 minutes. Then I do about five minutes of unisons. The technique is completely new to me, I’ve been practising it for about two weeks consistently and today my hands started to feel even. I even began to be able to interlaced them. I can see the potential for this tune technique and I’m really looking forward to it being realised. I must thank @dragodrumslondon for setting me my assignments for practice and overseeing my hand development. Even after nearly 30 years of playing I still feel like there’s a way to go and seek out friends and experts like Felipe who know more about hand technique than me.
