Summary: Deuce's first time ever in Mostro Lounge, in which he meets the tweels and sets up an appointment with Azul
(Pls reblog and leave a comment ❤)
The World's Prettiest Restaurant
Deuce decided he would go to Mostro Lounge on Saturday afternoon.
He stood outside the Octavinelle mirror with nervousness and guilt gnawing at him- a side affect of disobeying his dorm leader.
On the bright side, he didn't feel nervous about talking to Jade Leech. The Leech twins were infamous and rumours about them spread across compass like wildfire, however, those were just rumours and Deuce could handle himself just fine, thank you. At least he hoped so.
As he gazed at the shining, silver mirror he realised he had never been in Octavinelle before.
Well, he always did like seeing new things.
Deuce stepped into the portal and shut his eyes to shield them from the blinding light of the transportation magic. When he opened them again he was standing in a long, empty hallway.
Deuce knew Octavinelle was underwater, but the sight of sea floor outside the large glass windows still shocked him.
Feeling like he was in one of those aquarium tunnels, Deuce walked up to the glass and depressed his face against it.
There was an actual coral reef outside. Sunlight streamed down all the way to the soft sandy floor, the light catching on vibrant corals and flashy fish. The flish flitted to and fro, dipping through the seaweed and rubbing against the soft seagrass.
Deuce pulled away from the window and slowly walked to the end of the hall, turning his his haid to stare at everything around him in awe.
He reached a fork at the end of the hallway and blinked. On the wall in front of him hung a black sign with curling purple script.
There were two arrows. One pointed left with "Dormitory (Octavinelle students only)" written above it. The other pointed right with "Mostro Lounge" also written above it.
Deuce turned right and entered the lounge through the open oak doors and stopped short, frozen.
Mostro Lounge was amazing.
Soft jazz flowed into Deuce's ears like honey, the wonderful aroma of delicious food invaded his nostrils, and his eyes were assaulted with perhaps the prettiest restaurant he had ever seen.
The tables were solid oak with smooth white table tops. A pretty lamp in the shape of a nautilis shell sat delicately on each one. The seats were fine leather, a perfectly polished brown complimenting the table perfectly.
A spotless tiled floor reflected the blues of the lights shining above. The lights in question were shaped like jellyfish and carefully attached to curling tentacles protruding from the ceiling.
Stairs, lined with neon blue lightning, led up to more tables. Behind those tables was a huge glass wall, the clarity allowing Deuce to see the beauty of the sea behind it. To the right was a... bar? Did they sell alcohol here? It was long and lined with high stools. The shelves at the back filled with various containers of unknown stuff that Deuce almost wanted to try.
The lounge was crowded with people- students of various dorms and ages talking and laughing, creating a lovely hubbub of muffled voices and distant laughter.
A student created all of this? That was... that was incredible. Deuce was in awe of him.
"Good afternoon, sir."
A soft voice made Deuce jolt. He turned to see a guy who was quite possibly the smallest teenager he'd ever seen in his life, looking at him. He was shorter than Riddle and Epel!
Shocks of turquoise streaked through dark green locks (they looked almost like seaweed) and a pair of turquoise eyes gleamed in the light. He wore the Octavinelle uniform, which was also the staff uniform. Suspenders, a bowtie, the fedora, the whole shebang.
A pair of wireless earphones were just barely noticeable, the little buds hiding well in the dim lighting. Was that even allowed?
"Do you have a reservation, sir?"
It took far too long for the words to fully process, and when they finally did Deuce panicked.
"Huh? Me? OH- uh- no, I've never been here before, I-"
"Alright, then." The staff member sent a close-lipped smile his way. "I'm Finn Clearcove. I will be your waiter for today. Right this way, please."
Deuce wordlessly followed Finn to the nearest open table dazed. It was quite close to the bar and had a good view of the glass wall. Deuce was surprised it was open, given the glass wall spot should be popular, but as he looked around he realised all the tables near the bar were mysteriously empty.
Why?
Deuce got seated there anyways and a menu was placed in front if him. It, just like everything else here, was fancy and pretty.
The pages were black with sleek dark purple writing sprawling nearly across the pages. A gold nautilis was printed on the bottom of each page, and the prices were also printed in gold ink.
The options, paired with incredibly well done photos, made Deuce's stomach growl, his mouth water and his wallet cry out in terror.
Why was everything so expensive?
"Would you like to order?" Finn's soft voice made Deuce jolt again.
"Oh! Uh- for a drink get I get the- uh-" He looked at the menu. "The Crystal Tide please? It looks nice."
Finn sent another close-lipped smile his way. "Excellent choice. Would you like anything to eat?"
"The uh..." Deuce scoured the menu for the cheapest option. "The mushroom risotto, please."
Finn paused, looking at Deuce incredulously, before snapping back to to customer service mode and writing down his order. "Alright, thank you."
Finn turned to leave and Deuce stared after him, watching his tiny form become swallowed by the fray before realising he forgot to ask about Jade Leech.
Damn it.
Well, it was fine. Deuce would surely run into the vice dorm leader eventually . It wasn't like he would be hard to spot. From what hewas told, Jade was uncannily tall, had short, silky turquoise hair with a long thick black stripe framing the left side of his face, gold and olive heterochromatic eyes and a set of sharp teeth.
If Deuce missed someone like that, he would probably go see an optometrist.
The clinking of glasses at the bar suddenly caught his attention.
It was as if the Great Seven themselves heard his plight.
Deuce turned his head at the sound and there, leaning over the bar, was a staff member matching Jade's exact description.
"Ugh..." Jade groaned and half-heartedly fiddled with the various drinks on display, baring his teeth and frowning unhappily.
He... didn't look like a vice dorm leader.
His bowtie was loose and the top buttons of his shirt were undone, leaving his collarbones in the open for all to see. His jacket was completely unbuttoned and loose, showing off the suspenders underneath. The one right suspender thingy was hanging off his shoulder.
"Stupid Azul, makin' me do boring bar duty. I wanna cook."
He didn't sound like a vice dorm leader either.
Deuce stared at him for a long time before awkwardly clearing his throat. "Um... excuse me, Jade-senpai?"
There was a beat of silence.
Jade stopped what he was doing and slowly turned his head in Deuce's direction. Their eyes locked and suddenly every part of Deuce's body screamed at him to run.
"Oi." The Leech growled, voice low. "I'm Floyd, not Jade."
Deuce's jaw dropped open and he wondered how he could be so stupid as to forget that Jade had an identical twin brother?
A very angry identical twin brother at that.
Floyd glowered and leaned forward so the he stretched over the bar table. "The hell do you want, Mackerel?"
Mackerel?
"A-Actually my name is Deu-"
"Don't care." Floyd hissed. "You remind me of a mackerel so Mackerel it is."
Before Deuce could even think of how to answer that Finn arrived with his drink, silent and startling (but polite) as ever.
The Crystal Tide was- just like everything else at Mostro Lounge- a fancy, beautiful and pricy drink that made Deuce salivate.
It was filled with flavoured ice and the liquid was made up of three colours
Light red at the bottom, pink in the middle, and purple and blue at the top.
Floyd had gone silent, watching the exchange with a bored expression before focusing on Finn.
"Blue Angel, why don't you give Mackerel here your million madol smile?"
Finn shot Floyd a dirty look. "Hello, Floyd. And no. I will not." Despite the irritation seeping into his tone, his voice remained soft and subdued, but firm.
"Aww, but your teeth are sooo petty~!"
Deuce took Floyd's change of focus to take a sip of his drink and his eyes widened. A wonderful, fruity flavour flowed onto his tongue and made his taste buds dance in joy. How did they even make this stuff?
"Floyd, I don't have time for this, I have work to do." Finn hissed, and then he quickly turned around and left before Floyd get another word in.
Floyd glowered, disappointed, before focusing on Deuce again. "Anyways." He said, teeth glinting dangerously. "The hell do you want with Jade?"
Deuce swallowed. "I uh- I wanted go talk to him about making a contract with the dorm leader. I was told you need to go him to schedule a meeting."
Floyd went quiet once again and stared at Deuce for an uncomfortably long time before tilting his head back and letting out an exaggerated, mocking laugh.
"Hah! I see, I see. You want those study notes cause you ain't got the brains to pass those baby level first year exams?"
"Hey!" If Floyd didn't set off so many warning bells Deuce would've gotten up and punched him. "That's a terrible thing to say! How do you even know I'm a first year?"
Floyd shrugged. "You've still got that spark of life in your eyes." He said cryptically.
"Oh." Deuce said, like an idiot. He awkwardly drummed his fingers against the table, unsure of how to proceed.
"So- uh- anyways, when can I talk to Jade?"
Floyd rolled his eyes. "Dunno. He's busy. Currently in a world of bliss cause some poor moron ordered the mushroom risotto."
Deuce blinked at him, confused. "You say that like it's a bad thing..?"
"Well yeah, it's-" Floyd stopped mid sentence and squinted at Deuce. Then there was a spark of realisation in his eyes. "Oh shit, you ordered the risotto, didn't you? Hah! That's a riot!"
Deuce glared at him. "Y-"
"Here is your mushroom risotto, sir." Finn's sudden appearance made him jump out of his skin.
"Great Seven, how do you do that?!"
Floyd laughed again. The high-pitched, wheezey sound rattled Deuce's ears.
"Ehehe, Blue Angel's a sneaky cookie." He drawled, smirking at Finn. "He's so tiny and quiet nobody notices him!"
Finn let out a huff, but his expression was more fond than annoyed like before. He ignored the Leech, instead turning to Deuce.
"Do you need anything else?"
Deuce shook his head. "No, it's okay."
Finn bowed his head and promptly left, leaving him alone with Floyd once more.
"As I was saying." Deuce took a sip of that lovely drink. "Why's ordering mushroom risotto so bad?"
Floyd pulled a face. "Cause mushrooms are gross and the more people order it, the more mushrooms'll be put on the menu. And also, Jade has a weird kink for watching people eat his mushroom dishes."
Deuce balked. "He what-"
A soft chuckle stopped Deuce from fully voicing his horror.
"Now now, Floyd, you needn't be so crude."
The actual Jade Leech stood next to Deuce, smiling in amusement. He, unlike Floyd, wore the uniform properly- neat and pressed and so perfect it could give Riddle a run for his money.
Olive and gold eyes settled on Deuce, shining with something sinister.
"Go on." Jade coaxed. "Take a bite. I would love to hear your feedback.
Deuce obediently raised a forkful of risotto to his mouth and Floyd made a loud noise of disgust.
Deuce took a bite and for a second be was sure he had died and gone to heaven.
It was delicious! What was Floyd talking about? This was amazing!
Jade eyes gleamed in the low light and his sharp teeth just barely poked out from his lips. Eager.
"What do you think?"
"It's delicious!" Deuce said, delighted.
"I'm glad you think so." Jade's smile was a just a smidge more genuine and his voice sounded floaty. "Those mushrooms were grown and harvested by yours truly."
"Woah!" Deuce gaped. "That's really cool, Leech-senpai!"
"Why thank you."
"Ugh." Floyd gagged. "Enough with the mushroom talk! Jade, Mackerel here wants an appointment with Azul."
"Oh I see." The smile became fake again. "You just need to fill in a little form so that I may contact you with a date and time."
Deuce nodded and when Jade left to get the form he took the opportunity to shovel more delicious risotto into his mouth, much to Floyd's dismay.
Jade returned swiftly and handed Deuce a sheet of paper.
It didn't take too long to fill it in. Name, grade, class, club, cellphone number, and so on. That sort of thing. Deuce handed the form back to Jade with a thank you and the Leech disappeared yet again.
Floyd let out a groan and slumped on the bar table, watching Deuce finish the risotto with a look of disgust.
Finn reappeared to take Deuce's empty plate and glass- giving him another fright- and then offered him the bill.
Deuce mourned the chunk taken out of his pocket money, thanked Finn and Floyd for their help, and left to his dorm with a spring in his step.
Just as he arrived in his room, his phone went off, and he checked it to see a message from Jade.
"Good day Deuce-san. This is Jade. You my come to Mostro Lounge on the 15th of July at 18:30. Don't be late."
Deuce put his phone down and just barely stopped himself from squealing, opting to laugh and fall back on his bed instead, smiling in relief.
Finally, things were looking up. Once he got those study notes his life would be nothing but smooth sailing.
He was sure of it.

A warm sunday - sookai fic
this is just all complete purely fluff, huening kai barista era?? soobin is his favourite customer, soobin college student era !
________
“The usual?” “Mhm” said soobin as he nodded his head
“Coming right up!” said Kai, walking towards the coffee machine, loading in a single serving of coffee powder.
There stood soobin, looking at him silently, tracing his eyes to every llittle movement kai made. Grabbing a cup from the corner kai noticed soobin looking at him as they shared a glance. Flustered, he walked away to his table quickly, sitting down next to the window as he watched the raindrops. A raindrop race! It reminded him of his childhood nostalgia as he was silently cheering for his chosen raindrop, he didn’t realise how much time had passed before kai came with the coffee.
“Your coffee is ready” Said kai as he placed the tray carefully on the table.
“I didn’t order the cookie though?” Soobin asked looking at the plate of cookies on the tray.
“Its on the house, plus it's my favourite item!" Kai said, giving a warm smile as he began to walk away from the table, soobin felt funny. Why was his heart beating at a 100 miles per hour? he didn't know.
Tearing the paper package on the straw, soobin jabbed it into his drink stirring it as he sipped on the coffee. Yummy, he thought to himself as he took another sip, savouring the bitter taste. Looking at the golden brown cookies he carefully took one from the plate as he munched on it. Soobin had a good amount of cookies in his lifetime and it was safe to say that this was a good one. Licking his lips, he reached to take another cookie. While setting the tray aside, he zipped open his bag grabbed his computer setting it on the desk. He took his wireless headphones and connected them to his computer. Great, let’s do some work now. He opened his professor's lecture he began listening, writing down notes. As his pencil glided across the page, soft ambient music filled the background sounds of customers chatting filled his ears, time slowly passed by.
5 hours later
Soobin looked away from his screen, feeling a light tap on his shoulder, turning back to see kai. Quickly taking off his earphones, he looked curiously at kai.
“Hey soobin, I'm so sorry to bother you but it's 10:00 pm and we are going to close soon. If you’d like to stay longer I’ll just ask my manager, so sorry to bother you.” Kai said nervously as the lights dimmed, flashing a sorry smile.
“Oh my gosh I didn't notice the time, it flies by so fast. I’ll go ahead and pack everything up.” He said disconnecting his earphones.
“No no! It's fine. I’ll just call my boss and I'll see if they can keep you in for longer!” Kai said as he pulled his buzzing phone from his pocket. It was his manager that was calling. “I’m so sorry, I need to take a call!” He said excusing himself as he went behind the counter.
“Hi boss, whats up?” He said speaking in a soft voice.
“Kai, is the shop closed yet?” The boss asked over the phone an edge of strictness to his voice.
“Uhh, not yet actually I was wondering if I could open it for longer…?” He asked nervously tapping on the counter.
“Kai, I doubt there will be any more customers coming in after 10:00 close it up.” The boss said with an exasperated sigh.
“My friend is here right now, ,I was hoping I could extend closing hours?” Kai asked biting his lips waiting for his boss's response.
“Well alright, I’ll let you open for ONLY 1 more hour. Better make sure all the lights are off alright?” The boss said over the phone with a strict voice as kai's face slowly turned into a smile.
“Of course! Thank you so much boss!” Kai said happily, ending the call and placing his phone back in his pocket.
“Soobin, you can stay for one more hour, i'll just close all the lights except for this section, is that alright?” Kai asked flashing a small smile at the boy.
“Mm, sure.” Soobin said reciprocating the smile as he watched Kai walk off into the distance, switching off the lights.
“Hey uhm Kai, why don’t you sit here and talk to me?” Soobin said nervously, he didn't know why but he just wanted to talk to Kai. He silently prayed, it did not sound too harsh or forced in any way. He was an introvert, he wasn't even supposed to be doing this.
“Sure! But I have to wash some dishes first!” Kai said, walking over to the sink, as he turned on the tap scrubbing the dishes.
30 minutes later
Kai was walking to soobin’s table, he accidentally bumped into it spilling the coffee on Soobin’s oversized sweater, the brown slowly seeping into the cloth. Kai had a horrified face, he just ruined soobin's clothes, and that coffee could stain.
“OH MY GOD. I am so sorry, please forgive me. I didn't mean to do that.” He said bowing repeatedly, silently beating himself up.
“It’s fine, I’ll go grab a tissue.” Soobin said nonchalantly, as he got up to go to the washroom. He secretly found kai cute.
“NO, I’LL GET IT” Kai offered, hurrying to the restroom, he knew he was stupid but he figured that he wouldnt be THAT stupid to spill coffee on soobin gosh, to say he was ashamed would be an understatement.
Running back to the table, he grabbed Soobin's sweater as he began to rub it. Without a warning the back of his hand softly grazed soobin's hand. It was clear that he was not the only one who felt it. Soobin laughed awkwardly at Kai's flustered face as Kai backed away.
“I hope it doesn’t stain your sweater, I’m so sorry!” Kai said as he ran behind to the counter to hide himself, oh my god he was so embarrassed. First he spills on soobin and now he.. he tries to pull that type of shit?
“You can come out of hiding now y'know?” Soobin smiled at Kai who was covering his face. Soobin thought Kai's flustered face was adorable.
“You're blushing so hard like a tomato right now.” soobin said teasingly as kai slapped his shoulder softly, eyes too embarrassed to meet soobins.
“Ugh, I hate you.” Said Kai as he pouted softly, only resulting in soobin to chuckle. “There, there” Soobin said as he gave Kai a warm hug, chuckling softly.
THE END

The most majestic dog she’d ever seen was in front of her— sleek black fur, long and shining, it looked like it might be a wolf hybrid. It was standing next to a man in dark layered clothes, loose cargo pants with more pockets than she could count, knitted charcoal sweater poking out from underneath a faded black utility jacket. His profile was covered by a disposable black mask that contrasted with his pale skin and long eyelashes. Pretty, she thought, and stylish with his monochromatic look and tall frame.
Looking down to her lace trimmed blouse to her pink ruffled shirt, and the cream knee high socks tucked into her patent leather Mary Janes and found their juxtaposition to be quite dazzling. She walked slowly, her heels clomping with each step through the apartment lobby. “Hi— can I pet your dog?” she called out lightly, not wanted to startle the man or the dog. The man pulled out a wireless earphone and didn’t even look her over, before speaking. “No.” His voice was apathetic and low like just opening his mouth for a one sylibil word was too much work.
She nodded and looked down into the dogs amber eyes, damn she really wanted to pet that dog. “Oh, okay! They’re really pretty— um can I ask, is it a boy or a girl?”
“Girl.” Again with the one word response. It was kind of cute. She wiggled her fingers at the girl but didn’t reach out her hand, but her bracelets still clanged together all the same. “She really beautiful,” she chimed before looking up at the man, who was now watching her from the corner of his eye, but his body was still turned away, facing the elevator. “You two make a good match,” she added for good measure— a girl doesn’t get the chance to flirt with a man like this everyday. Did he live here too? Or was he just visiting someone? She wanted to know.
She could see his eyebrows furrow slightly, and she wanted to believe he was blushing under that mask but she really couldn’t tell. Time to amp it up a bit, see what happened, he hasn’t told her to fuck off yet and he seemed like the type who would tell her to fuck off if she was crossing a line. “Her eyes are pretty like melted chocolate or maybe a planet— is Saturn brown? I don’t actually know,” she lamented before turning fully to the man, crossing her arms and balancing her chin on her fist as if she was pondering something great, looking him up and down pointedly. He just shrugged slightly, pulling his hand from his pocked to pet his dog softly behind the ears.
Stepping a bit closer but still a respectable distance away— she’s not a creep just a flirt. “Hey, would you look over here for a second? I wanna check something,” she asked curiously, batting her eyelashes a bit, and if the arm she tucked under her chest caused movement then… that's just fine with her.
His hand was still on his dog’s head when he turned to her with a shift of his shoulders— and he did have very nice hands, the kind of hands you want on you immediately and immodestly. He was looking at her fully now, parallel to her body, and she swears to god that the light shined brighter, backlighting him like some tall, dark, monosyllable angel sent to tempt her. She blushed, and moved the hand under her chin to her flushed cheek, cupping it and tilting her head to the side, letting her hair fall just enough in her face to be coy. “Mmm, I can’t really tell from here….’, she muttered, glancing up at him, looking properly dejected before she continued. “Could you step a little bit closer?” she asked, blinking up at him with her flirtiest eyes.
To which he just blinked at her cooly from behind his mask, and sighed like he’d rather be anywhere else while he step forward— just one step, no more. Side by side to his dog, black woven leash wound around his hand, hanging in a short tether to the dog's collar, embellished with a simple silver heart chain. He looked down at her boredly, but his hand was wringing the rope in his hand like a fidget spinner. God, could this guy get any cuter! They were close enough that if she reached out her arm fully, she might be able to brush her polished fingertips against his chest. She furrowed her brows, and dropped her hand from her cheek and propped it on her skirt clad hip. “I still can't tell, could you be a doll and just step a little closer?” she asked sweetly. And bless his soul, he just rolled his eyes with an audible huff that blew air from behind his mask, and stepped one step closer.
A slightly less respectable space, perfect. She took her que and leaned up unto her toes and peered up into his eyes, his green eyes— perfect green, like opening her eyes underwater to watch the summer sun pierce the water in shafts of emerald light. Green like the color of unripe tomatoes her grandmother fried on Sundays. Green like grass stains on her white dress, and the bottle of absinth she’d stolen on her seventeenth birthday. Green, green, green.
“Oh,” she breathed.
The elevator dinged.
“I was wrong… you don’t match,” she confirmed like she’d solved a puzzle, and settled back onto her heels.
She waited for the residents to leave before she stepped in, walking to the corner where the keypad of apartment floors was. He entered in after her, his dog following after him like he hung the stars, lucky girl. She noticed that his earphone was still held between his fingertips, she smiled to herself, humming while the doors slid close. She pressed the button for the ninth floor and watched it light up a diffuse white.
“What floor?” she asked, suddenly feeling a little shy, her stomach felt hot and buzzy like she’d swallowed the sun or a beehive.
“Huh?”
She wondered what he was thinking about, but it probably wasn’t what she was thinking but a girl could fantasize. “I asked what floor?” She gestured to the keypad with a wave of her hand. He glanced to where she pointed and back before speaking, “Tenth floor,” he muttered and she leaned forward and pressed his floor button.
She got a two word response! Score.

Happiness - Redux 2. Entertainment
Outside of the military base was a vast expanse of desert and mountain ranges. Scattered villages were spread about the region, seldom near one another, and seldom did a resident of one village travel to visit another. Risks were too high. Correctors, foul creatures of unknown origin, roamed the region, no, the world, and tore apart anyone and anything they could get their claws and teeth on. Their lumpy, fleshy bodies, often round with little stubby arms and legs. Almost human in composition, but eyes bulging and hungry. Their large, metallic jaws, always chomping away. Some were larger than others, especially those allowed to grow.
Even before the Corrector invasion spread, the region Turtle Dove was from was fraught with poverty. Once, there were sprawling cities with stable infrastructure, jobs and commerce, and gourmet delicacies. There were still homemade meals in villages, mostly of whatever stray animal a villager could hunt that wasn’t yet killed by a Corrector. Artisans and merchants traveled out from their villages to trade at their own peril. And there always was peril.
Worldwide, there were supposed to be commanders with an army of a specialized military force known as “Selkies” who would combat the Correctors and bring peace once again to the world. But few, if any, ever showed up to the villages. In fact, to the best of Turtle Dove’s knowledge, neither a commander nor a Selkie ever showed up to his village. He only heard the stories, both about the military units, and the state of the world, through other villagers. Why no aid had come to them was anyone’s guess. Maybe long ago, the military deemed such villages lost causes.
Whatever the reason, as soon as Turtle Dove caught wind of a military base nearby recruiting new commanders, he signed up and made the risky journey to the base.
Now, however, Turtle Dove realized just how naive he was. The other attendees waiting to take the qualification exam looked much more serious and knowledgeable while he had little knowledge over what a Selkie was, let alone just what being a commander entailed.
Maybe I should leave before it’s too late, he thought, before hitting himself upside the forehead and chastising himself for even having such a thought. No, he added, remember who you’re doing this for.
“Hey boys, what’cha playing?” Asked the lady next to the doors, cross-legged and with one eye open.
“Chainsaw Moan. You probably haven’t heard of it,” one of the boys sneered.
“I actually played a little, but I dropped it after a week. Turns out running around with scissors is less of a waste of time.”
The two boys’ jaws practically hit the floor. One of them folded their arms in protest.
“Just like a woman to dismiss the interests of men.”
They both placed wireless earphones in their ear and blocked out their surrounding.
Turtle Dove’s arm still ached, but there was little he could do but wince and hope for the best with the upcoming exam. While he had no interest in running with scissors, and didn’t have enough space on his phone for any games, he couldn’t help but try to listen close, and see if he could still hear any hums or sound effects from those boys’ phones. Yes, the sounds were muffled and emitted into their ears, but surely, something would leak out…
“You’re interested, aren’t you?” The black haired woman turned to Turtle Dove.
“Ah...err…”
“There’s nothing wrong with striking conversation. Here’s a tip: boys don’t like it when you don’t already play the same game as them. How about you get their attention and say something like, ‘I can’t wait for the 1.8 update.’ That will surely get them talking.”
Turtle Dove stared at her, dumbfounded. He couldn’t sense any malice, and in fact, she seemed half-awake this whole time. The only tone her voice carried was sleepiness.
“Hey. Uh,” Turtle Dove tried to get their attention, but they seemed too engrossed in their game.
This isn’t working. But if I don’t get their attention, I’m just going to come off as awkward, he thought.
“Hey dipshits!” Turtle Dove cupped his hands over his mouth and yelled.
Each boy took out their earpiece.
“The hell’re ya yellin’ for?” The one on the right scowled.
“Just wanted to know if you two were ready for the 1.8 update. I know I can’t wait.”
The two boys looked each other, then back at Turtledove and scowled. That, too, didn’t last long, as soon they burst into a biting laughter.
“Bro, what? Get out of here! ‘1.8’, my ass! Can you believe this guy? ‘1.8’? Really?” The boy on the left asked.
“If you wanted us to believe you played, you should’ve just said who your wife in the game was,” the other boy added.
“I’m just not ready to settle down yet,” Turtle Dove tried to save face, but it was clear it was already too late by the time they put their headphones back in.
Why are boys so hard to make conversation with? Turtle Dove wondered. Even when I try to act like one of them, it just blows up in my face.
Turtle Dove hung his head low. Time after time, he had been humiliated in various ways. Worse, the black haired woman who gave him such ‘advice’ was chuckling softly to herself.
A red light above the double doors lit up and a soft ringing sound followed.
“Will Willie and Pecker please step forward?” A monotone, masculine, and mechanical voice called through the speakers. Each boy took out their ear pieces and set their phones in their pockets. Willie and Pecker nodded to each other, and the two, who Turtle Dove was sure upon them standing up, must have been identical twins, as he couldn’t discern a single feature between the two besides one wearing a plain white T-shirt and camouflage cargo pants, and the other wearing a black hoodie and gray sweatpants. But even still, he couldn’t put names to their wardrobes.
When the doors opened up, Turtle Dove noticed the soft, teal glow of an elevator. Each boy went into different elevator doors and before long, the doors closed behind them, followed by the familiar hum of an elevator.
The dark haired woman yawned.
“Let’s hope they put on a good show.”
She stood up, revealing herself to be not so tall, but not short, either. Only a head below Turtle Dove, if he had to guess. A virtual screen projected onto the elevator doors.
Five agonizing minutes passed. Then ten. At last, Turtle Dove could no longer sit still. Curiosity overtook him and he strode over to stand beside the woman with long, dark hair.
On the screen, he noticed small figures of the two boys, each divided by towering canyons as they stood at the bottom. As far above as they were, what was being fought was all too evident: the misshapen lumps of flesh and metal that were Correctors.
“What?! They’re fighting those things?!” Turtle Dove made his displeasure known.
“Of course. Didn’t you know? For the exam, they deploy captured Correctors to see how prospective commanders deal with the threat.”
“But those things are dangerous!”
“Selkies are dangerous as well. Between the two machines, it should make for some entertainment.”
“Selkies are machines?”
Yet another revelation that was common knowledge, but to Turtle Dove, it changed everything he heard about them.
“In a sense. Flesh and machinery. Created for the purpose of battle and serving their commander. I haven’t had to explain this before. Are you sure you’re cut out for this?”
Turtle Dove gulped. Doubt was always a growing tumor in his mind, but he was already there. It wasn’t as if walking away was going to avenge his sister.
“I just thought they were elite soldiers with advanced armor.”
“You’re not far off,” she licked her lips. “Selkies all have the appearance of women, with few, if any blemishes, in order to appeal to their future commander. Little, if any body fat, except for the more desirable areas. Chest, posterior, thighs. None too tall, none too muscular. Little, if any body hair. Originally bred as sex dolls, later converted into killing machines. We aren’t allowed many interests outside of sex and violence, so...we must find other ways to keep ourselves entertained. We end up treating intercourse as murder, and killing as carnal pleasure.”
“That’s horrible,” was all Turtle Dove could say.
“Which part?”
“Just...no desires of their own?”
“The military demands obedience from their units. Adhere to the mission and leave your self at the door. You of all people should know that fact better than anyone.”
“Wait. You said ‘we’?”
“Ha ha ha! You just now realized who you stand beside?” She raised her head and laughed. It was full of exuberance. The idea that such a thing was an android...or something else, just didn’t register, no matter what he had been told.
“I thought you were trying out for commander, like me!”
“Oh, I certainly hope my commander wins. But if nothing else, I wish to have the time of my life. Speaking of, look at the screen.” She tapped at it and Turtle Dove turned his attention back toward the action:
On each end, the boys faced off against large Correctors with a dome head and wires hanging and flailing about, while their gaping mouths hung wide open and each arm was fitted with a large blade. Two Selkies on each end fought the creatures, but seemed outclassed and outnumbered. One, on the left side, dropped noxious gas in front of the Correctors and another tried suffocating them with what looked like a weighted blanket. On the right side, a small Selkie flew about the arena and tried poking the Corrector with what looked like a thimble. Another Selkie fired arrows which peeled off her back toward the Correctors. Neither attacks on either side proved very effective, and soon, the Correctors lopped off the heads of the flying Selkie and the one with the weighted blanket. Sparks and scraps of metal spilled forth from their heads.
The blade-armed Correctors rushed past the barrage of arrows and the cloud of foul odor. Their efforts proven ineffective, the two boys tried backing away and running off, but soon found themselves trapped, and with it, the Correctors severed the boys’ heads from their necks, as their skulls flew high up into the air and a bloody mist filled the arena.
This can’t be real, Turtle Dove shook and backed away. The bags which regulated his breathing, inflating and deflating, went into overdrive as his breath grew shorter and shorter.
Meanwhile, the Selkie grinned and clapped.
“Bravo! Bravo! Good show!”
Her cheers were rapturous, but all Turtle Dove could feel was disgust.
“They died! How is this allowed?”
She quieted her cheers, but her smile didn’t leave her.
“While the referees tend to make every effort to keep the testing site safe, it’s not uncommon for would-be commanders to get killed durin their exam.”
“And their Selkies!”
“Queef, Blumpkin, Spanish Fly, and Backshot. All low rarity units. On the bright side, there’s always more copies that can be made of them. As for those boys, fret not; no life is wasted on the battlefield and they will be scrapped for parts, converted into modifications to make us Selkies stronger.”
“That’s no reassurance!”
“Dear boy, you are adorable. And,” she sniffed, “your scent is very familiar. Feminine. Whether those two boys were friends, brothers, or lovers, matters little. No, the most important part, to me, is the moment just as they’re about to die. For that brief moment, they get to feel what it’s like to live as a Selkie. I wonder, if they were allowed to live, would they share our ecstasy?”
She then transformed. A helmet growing over her head and cords carrying small scissors floating over her back. In each arm were two shears which combined into large scissors.
