My dream house’s dining room table is a sectional instead of drop or removable leaf, like that Wendell Castle table. I mean, that table is my dream house’s dining table, but I’m trying to design-imagine my own. The sections could have independent functions--a narrow removable center could live most days as a side table in a kitchen, for example, as very narrow dropped-leaf tables often do. Or sections could have knock-down style 2d plane bases and fold into a closet. I think I might also like a trestle base! I never really liked trestle tables before--Lucas does because they have a special place in woodworker culture--but I have been into them lately mainly because we’ve been looking at compact drafting tables. I think that my dream dining table has an amorphous and possibly moveable surface, like Castle’s table and many Alan Buchsbaum designs. I don’t necessarily even mean his raw-edge stone table tops, though you know I love those, but he did some wavy-rounded fun shapes. I also like the oval-edged kitchen tables and counters he did fairly often during the first half of his career, when these were somewhat popular. (As in his Owens Corning table, here.)

My current dream house has a kitchen I wouldn’t touch, and in general “untouchable kitchen” is a feature in all my house hunter fantasies, but if I were to design a dream kitchen in a bigger house, I would include a kitchen island inspired by many of Buchsbaum’s. I’ve never lived in a house big enough to have a kitchen island, and even my dad’s parents’ stucco mcmansion had a great kitchen table instead of an island, and a separate formal dining space. (The kitchen was, I think, raised above the adjacent living room a few steps and they were separated by a railing--you could sit at the big kitchen table and look into the living room, it was a really nice arrangement. The formal dining room was accessed through a door at the back of the kitchen, and it opened into a formal sitting room where kids could not play.) I never imagined I’d want a kitchen island until I started studying Buchsbaum’s.

Buchbsaum relied on and perfected kitchen islands out of necessity, because he was often building kitchens from scratch in loft spaces. I think that part of the open-kitchen/kitchen island’s ascendancy is really overlooked, that “loft living” was being reproduced and circulated by magazines and catalogs and applied to totally different spaces. With this influence--and I do believe there was a powerful influence, and, like, so did Sharon Zukin, so--more and more houses were being built on the scale of the former (and rezoned) New York light manufacturing factory, in a way, or homes across America were beginning to be remodeled in the “empty” image of loft living. I think this was as powerful of an influence on American kitchen culture as more transparently social ones.

In any case, Buchsbaum designed and built a lot of very good kitchen islands, and his work on them was influential. But they were so good. His best ones, the ones that I would replicate, followed this formula: prefabricated cabinetry (usually the same used throughout the kitchen) as a base, on that base a highly customized (to space and bodies) counter surface, usually in a combination of synthetic and natural materials, with a cantilevered “snack bar” extension supported most often by diner table bases secured to the floor. The countertop would often be the most heavily customized and stylized feature in the kitchen, and I think he may have articulated this as a function of cost.

In his first loft, the island counter ran the entire length of the kitchen (which, once again as a function of from-scratch design, ran entirely along the wall). The inner edge of the counter was straight and parallel to the wall and its built-in cabinetry, but the outer edge (along which you sit and socialize, including on secured diner stools) was curved and wavy. (Norma Skurka described it in the NYT.) This counter, according to her reporting, “looks like butcher block” but is actually “maple floor planks nailed into plywood and cut into-free form curves at one end.” I would say about half of the island’s counter surface was supported by cabinetry, and about half of it was “open” (on posts). In his second personal loft in the same building he applied a similar technique in a white formica. In other later kitchens I’ve seen he would extend a counter surface outward to become tables in different shapes (shaved-down triangles to maximize seating space in squarer kitchens, more ornamental geometric pass-through counters, countertops narrowed decoratively in areas resting only on narrow shelving rather than deep prefab cabinetry).

I’m surprised this open “snack bar” island isn’t more popular today, with the dominance of “openness” and the multi-function kitchen, but I guess the only god more powerful than Open Concept is Storage! Which you lose, a little bit, if you keep the base of an island open. (Even I cannot imagine needing that much storage but hey.) But I don’t think its components (the diner base, for one), necessarily have the tacky-dated associations to hold it back. I would love an island if it was this kind of island, and it really is practical: relatively inexpensive off-the-shelf base components, and an extremely expressive surface that could look like anything you can imagine! Especially if you did butcher block, the sky [your saw] is the limit. I recently saw a similar principle in a stylized 1980s owner-built home I “found” and am hoping to write about.

Interestingly I don’t think Buchsbaum incorporated a lot of other built-in surfaces, such as for working, in any project that I can find. He built these highly stylized diner-inspired islands and counters in kitchen spaces, secured diner booth-style tables in nooks, a lot of “floating” marble bathroom counters, a fair share of built-in shelving, some wild built-in cabinets with counters for Diane Keaton, and of course plenty of built-in loft beds (his own was ceramic tiled!), but not a lot of secured work surfaces. Alongside all of these architectural surfaces he usually included tables that, if I had to guess, he would resist classifying by function. A lot of them were raw-edged stone (or stone combinations, or stone-synthetic combinations, as in the colorcore table-desk in my blog header), some were wood or formica. They were often on casters, and so could be moved between spaces in a loft, and so could define and re-define spaces in a loft by their immediate, living use. (His most famous of these tables were the ones with pipes for legs.) I sort of think this is, again, an underconceptualized part of loft aesthetic, the choice to make some things architectural and some things mutable. And of course, his way of defining space isn’t that different from [gulp] a Bauhaus way of defining use-space, and I want to interrogate how “multi-use” spaces in contemporary homes are and aren’t doing the same things. Mostly I’m just thinking about and opening my mind to moveable workspaces and work furniture in my own home! What about: a compact trestle-based drafting table that can casually perch near a couch, or anywhere?
