Loki was shaking.  He was furious.  He was excited.  That boy had been so powerful.  Unheard of for a human.  By Loki’s estimate he was about the same age as his boy.  Amassing something like that in less than two decades was…  astounding.  And the way he used it!  Truly, Loki had rarely met a more kindred spirit. 

It complicated everything immensely, especially when coupled with the disappearance of Barton.  After all, no Barton meant no materials.  And they needed those materials, or, at least, the energy source.  Everything else was being labored over by Dr. Selvig and the assistants Loki had procured for him. 

On the other hand, the fight in Amity Park might have been enough to get Earth’s defenders to really hate him.    

No, that wasn’t what he’d been trying to do.  He was trying to divide them.  Divide and conquer, as they said, and Loki would conquer them.  They were divided.  They…  The boy, the pharaoh, he would be against Iron Man, if nothing else.  His boy’s other young friends didn’t seem terribly enamored of the heroes, either.  Likely, they would spend as much time getting SHIELD’s way as Loki’s in an attempt to get their other friend back. 

Not as good as crashing their ridiculous airship, but not terrible, all things considered. 

“That was stupid,” said the boy.  “That whole thing was stupid.  If you’d just waited—”

“It doesn’t matter,” said Loki.  “We still have the original plan.”

“Which was terrible.  Maybe…”  The boy glanced at where Selvig was working and licked his lips.  “What if we spliced into the power cable in the ocean?  Keep everything out of New York?  If the army you’re bringing can deal with space they can deal with water, right?”

“They can do many things,” said Loki, vaguely.  “But we cannot breathe underwater.”

“I don’t need to breathe.”

“And the rest of us?”

“We can steal a boat.”

Loki raised an eyebrow.  “I must commend your dedication to…” he trailed off.  Thanos’s herald was plucking at the strings of his mind.  He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.  When was the last time he’d slept?  He’d have to meditate and see what the irritating and impatient creature wanted. 

He wanted- He needed—

Ice, invigorating and incongruous, washed over him, sweeping away the pull on his mind.  He breathed in through his teeth and rounded on the boy. 

“What did you do?”

“I helped you.  Mind control is unfriendly.”

Loki snarled.  “Boy, do you have any idea what you’ve done?”

“Yes.  But my name is Danny.”  He tilted his head.  “I’m pretty sure I’ve told you that before.”

“That is my contact with my army!”

“It isn’t really yours, though, is it?”

Loki raised his hand, intending to strike the boy for his impudence, but…  He dropped it.  There was no point to it.  Loki would merely have to find some way to instruct him not to interrupt the connection again without subverting his other, more important orders. 

Later, later.  Unless he was contacted again, it wasn’t a priority. 

“We could try to contact Jazz again.  I’d bet they took the equipment I asked for with them.”

“We are not talking to your sister.  We do not need any of that so-called equipment, regardless.”

“Yeah, sure, and do you really need an army from somewhere else?  I don’t want to tell you how to do your job, but look at everything you’ve already done all by yourself!”  He spread his hands to either side.  “Why not just keep doing this?  I’m sure that by the time whoever is really in charge of that army gets here, you’ll have gotten Earth to the point where it can more than match them.”

“Stop,” said Loki.  That was all irrelevant.  It was meaningless.  He could not—No.  Fighting Thanos was impossible.  All he could do was this.  All he could do… 

But the boy’s suggestion had merit.  Somewhat.  He had—He could—

His skin felt like it was crawling off.  Memories of—

Danny put his hand on Loki’s arm and ice pricked at his skin.  It was like holding the Casket of Ancient Winters.  It was like touching a blizzard.  It was like the chill in his own blood. 

He put a hand on the boy’s shoulder, gently.  “Danny,” he said, voice soft, “this is the only way.  This is the only choice.  Everything else… is worse.”

“Sometimes, the right choice only seems worse.  Sometimes, the worse choice is the only one you can live with making.  The only one that won’t haunt you forever.”

“Then you understand me perfectly.”  He patted Danny on the shoulder, then turned away.  “We are going to Stark Tower.”

“Like some kind of prisoner exchange?” asked Jazz. 

“No,” said Tucker.  “Because of the whole HYDRA thing, they don’t want the really awesome people who are partially famous for being nazi haters to be here.  But they need a place to deal with the alien problem.”

Well, they weren’t the only ones.  Jazz would even say that the alien problem was her top priority right now, right after not bleeding out or crashing.  She looked back at Barton. 

“And you’re sure arrow boy isn’t a nazi?”

“I’m not sure,” said Tucker.  “But based on what I’ve seen behind the curtain, I doubt it.  Unless he’s one of these codename guys.  There’s… a lot of double, triple security on everything and some of it is in languages I don’t speak.  They didn’t put sensitive stuff where the GIW could get it easily.  I guess the GIW were sort of the idiot cousins in all this.  Too loyal and know too much to completely brush off or take out when they have so few people comparatively, but too incompetent to put on anything they thought was real or important.”

“And no one believes in ghosts,” said Jazz. 

“You’d think that people would be more credulous, considering the whole super-soldier thing was decades ago and Thor is, you know, around.  Existing.  All those aliens.  Oh, and they’re not even—” He broke off.  “Okay, yeah, I know you don’t want me to talk about it, but who do you think was the first person I showed when I hacked you?  Get off my back.  There are so many other aliens.  There are even shape shifting aliens, just living here.  Like a Men in Black situation.”  Something in the background of Tucker’s call got very loud and annoyed looking. 

“And you’re sure none of these people are nazis?”

“Pretty sure.  The one woman is Russian, though.  Maybe.  Her accent is really good.  And Thor’s…  He’s not actually Scandinavian.  It’s whatever.  Look, I’ve only met, like, Stark.  And the Russian.  So, you aren’t exactly getting a personal vetting, here.”

Jazz sighed.  A personal vetting probably wouldn’t be all that useful, anyway, given the circumstances.  These were spies that could fool other spies.  Not people who would have trouble fooling Tucker. 

“But they’re all those heroes, right?” asked Sam.  “Not people that are coming out of nowhere.”

“Except the Russian.  And I’m not sure Dr. Banner really counts as a hero.  Except in, like, the pioneer in the field of science sense.”

“I don’t know,” said Sam, “there were some things on the internet way back.”

“Yeah,” said Tucker.  “I think we can at least be sure Captain America isn’t some kind of sleeper agent.  Or Mr. Stark.  I mean, whatever plan would involve making a really awesome weapons dealer billionaire in their pocket dump the weapons part and give eighty percent of his income to charity and spend his spare time tracking down terrorists and curing malaria would have to be really convoluted.”

“The malaria thing wasn’t actually me—”

“And, like.  Thor’s an alien.  So maybe he’s whatever the space equivalent of nazis is, but at least he’s not an Earth nazi, and—”

“Okay,” said Jazz.  “Tucker, you’re rambling.”

“Right, I don’t think these particular guys are HYDRA.”

“Great,” said Jazz.  “So, what do they actually want?”

“Like I said, they don’t want the, uh, the Avengers to be around the potential nazis.  Probable nazis.  HYDRA agents.  Whatever you want to call them.  But they still need a place to work.  They want that place to be the Ops Center.”

Jazz bit her lip.  She wasn’t enthusiastic about letting a bunch of heavily armed strangers who were buddies with the guy who had shot her into their space.  But while they could use the ops center to track Danny if he was using his powers and capture him with the onboard equipment and shields, if Loki had more people like arrow boy and the weaponry to back them up…  Jazz didn’t think the ops center would do all that well against, say, a grenade launcher.  It wasn’t built with that kind of weaponry in mind. 

For that matter, it wouldn’t do all that well against the GIW if they decided to attack.  They didn’t have Danny to drive them off this time. 

(And Loki had held his ground against Tucker while he was in the full grip of Duulaman.  Danny had trouble with Duulaman.  His power couldn’t be dismissed.)

“How many of them are there again?”

“Five,” said Tucker.  “Not counting arrow guy.  Barton.”

Then they’d outnumber her, Sam and Tucker by two to one.  And three of them were soldiers trained to fight, another could pull a Cujo if he got even the least bit annoyed, one was armed to the teeth, and one was at least the inspiration for a god. 

“Oh!  And Valerie is here.  Not sure why, but.  You know.”

“Well that’s something,” said Jazz.  She wasn’t thrilled about Valerie being involved, and she didn’t know what side she’d come down on in a fight, but…  Yeah.  It was something. 

“She knows.  Actually, all of these guys do.  About Danny.”

Jazz closed her eyes.  She’d known that, but getting it confirmed had a different effect.

There was a way to even those odds, at least a little bit.  She didn’t like it. 

“Where do they want to meet?” she asked. 

Tucker rattled off a set of coordinates.  Jazz started shaking her head before he was done.

“No,” she said.  “Tell them to meet us at Lake Eerie.”

“Are you thinking it’s a trap?” asked Sam. 

“No,” said Jazz, “but the GAV still has to follow roads.  Mostly.”

“Oh, no,” said Sam. 

Jazz shrugged.  “We don’t have a lot of options.  Mom and Dad…  I don’t even know what they know.  They’re working for SHIELD somehow, too, so they probably know.”

“They might still be okay with—” She looked at arrow boy.  Barton.  Annoying guy.  Whatever.  “With the whole molecule by molecule thing.  More than okay with it.  We don’t know.  We can’t bring them into this situation.”

“Yeah,” said Jazz, “but they’ll defend us.  We’re the ones who’re here, and to help others you have to take care of yourself.  We can cross any other bridges when we get to them.”

Sam wasn’t so sure about that.  In fact, she was the opposite of sure about that.  “I don’t want them to be in a situation where shooting at Danny while knowing he’s Danny is something they have to do.  I don’t want them…”  She trailed off. 

“I get what you’re saying.  I do.  He’s my brother.  They’re my parents.  But… I don’t think they will.  Not like that.”

“If I can put my two cents in,” called Barton from across the room.

“No,” snapped Sam. 

“I did meet the Fentons.”

“Great,” said Sam, “so have I.  You’re not special.”

“Yes, but I have a bit of an outside perspective.  You know how that goes.  I’ve met Danny, too.”

“Did you shoot him, too?”

“Sam…”

“No, that’s a good point.  But no.  I met them, and the only thing they talked about more than their work was their kids.  Maybe not the best thing to do when you’re being hired by spies, but…”  He shrugged, the motion cut short by the handcuffs.  “They care.”

“That was never in doubt,” said Jazz, as cold as Sam ever heard her. 

“Hey, we’re on the same side, now, right?  I’m just trying to be helpful.  The more comfortable you are, the better.” 

“The better to ambush us, you mean?”

“Still not helpful,” said Jazz.

Sam crossed her arms and tapped her foot.  She was just trying to look at all the perspectives.  Danny loved his parents.  But there were reasons that, despite everything, he hadn’t trusted them.  And anyone who worked with SHIELD could by HYDRA.  Anyone. 

If it were just up to Sam, she wouldn’t work with any of them.  Danny had allies in the Ghost Zone.  If nothing else, his enemies wouldn’t like him being occupied.  They were awfully territorial over him sometimes.  They just had to, you know, make a portal…  travel through the Zone…  hope the portal opened somewhere useful… find the necessary ghosts… convince them to come back… make another portal to a useful place… the porta-portal and Fenton Bazooka portals didn’t last that long, after all. 

Yeah, that was totally doable. 

Absolutely workable despite Jazz’s arrow wound, the assassin/hostage, Sam’s relative inexperience with the technology they had on hand, and the lack of Zone-ready transportation. 

Yeah, right. 

She couldn’t even say all that stuff in her own head without it sounding sarcastic. 

Even if they could do all of that and got an army of ghosts, Loki could bring his army over first.  There was no guarantee that an army of ghosts could beat an army of aliens.  They didn’t even knew how big Loki’s army was, except that he expected it to be able to conquer the planet with it.  They needed backup, regardless.

“Okay.  Fine.  Call them.  We’ll meet up with the superpowered boy band, too.  But you know what people who are used to being in charge are like.  This is going to go wrong, and it’s going to go wrong fast.”

“And then you’ll say I told you so?”

“And then I’ll say I told you so.”

I need a Misunderstanding trope where Phantom is put with one of the ‘kid’ groups because everyone assumes he’s a teen, but Phantom (he’s, like, 28) thinks he’s just like… co-managing/supervising the group with another Justice League member.

Asked if he’s in school thinking high school? He says yes, thinking of college where he’s going for his graduate degree. His grumbles over homework and time management skills cements it.

ICE contact? Frostbite. Yeah, that’s really his name. (Jazz talked him out of putting her because if it’s an emergency then they likely need medical history and support.) Here’s a device to actually reach him. His parents? Uhhh, nah, I would put my sister second.

It just goes on.

The guy snarks, puns, and throws jokes, clearly up-to-date with internet culture. He’s a casual dude, loves video games, burgers, and space. He’s kinda short and a little lanky, but he’s stupid strong (like he both forgets he is strong and doesn’t know his strength at times).

Phantom’s checking all the boxes as a teen hero both visually and on vibes with the League so they put him there. Danny’s touched that they think he’s responsible enough to put him in charge of the kids, so he does his best.

(Batman finds out about the appointment after it’s approved, but before he says anything he sees how much the teens open up around Phantom and… well… if they didn’t do their homework to see that the Phantom persona has been active for 14 years with pop-ups through history then that’s not really his problem, is it? He might miss that Phantom doesn’t realise this for a while…whoops.)

DC x DP Prompt: Bruce is bad at emoting but at least ghosts are empathic (too bad bat kids are not)

Was reading Twincognito on AO3 when I stumbled across this gem again:

Now I really want to read a story where Bruce adopts Danny post Meta trafficking and is being his usual emotionally constipated self. His kids keep getting mad at him because he's treating their new meta brother who was trafficked poorly (generally being stilted in conversation with him, walking away hurriedly mid-conversation, avoiding Danny when he's feeling really awkward, etc). They think Bruce is discriminating against Danny for being a civilian, meta, dealer's pick, but really it's just Bruce being horribly socially awkward. Danny knows this because of ghost empathy and find the whole thing hilarious. The whole thing comes to a head with the Bat Kids staging an intervention in the Bat Cave.

Danny is glad he actually made a plan for once. Jazz had been on his back about telling their parents he was Phantom, and he had managed to convince her he had a plan. The only thing that would extend how long it took was the frequency of ghost attacks.

He generally didn’t have much free time, so luckily Clockwork was willing to put him in a time bubble so he could get stuff done, like get enough sleep. But mostly he was training. Sometimes with Wulf to make portals, but other ghosts had come by too.

The power that was giving him the most trouble, and that he needed most for his plan was duplication. It took forever and he still couldn’t have more than 3 versions of himself at one time. How Vlad managed so many he had no idea.

Anyway back to his plan. He got all his stuff that he couldn’t afford to lose hidden away, got copies of all his parents blueprints and files, replaced items that he didn’t feel comfortable letting them keep if worse case scenario came, and a few more miscellaneous things.

He decided not to tell Sam and Tucker what he was doing. Though he did give them a mysterious file that they weren’t able to open yet. It would lead them to him later. But he needed their reactions to be legitimate, even if he hated having to potentially distress them for a bit.

He then sent his duplicate in his place back home while he went to the Ghost Zone to keep learning and keep an eye on things. Hopefully things went well, but he planned to spend a full living realm month here just in case his parents faked taking it well.

It did not go well. About two weeks after his duplicate told his parents they knocked him out and buried him in a ghost proof coffin. Was he glad he wouldn’t have to experience his worse fears as a lab experiment? Yes. Was he still going to have nightmares of being trapped underground unable to escape? Also yes.

He was glad it was his duplicate though. It was easy for him to undo from a distance and since they had been connected he still had all the memories. He typed in the code for the file he gave his friends before he left. Time to go to Gotham, the one place he was able to wheedle out of Clockwork would be best for him.

When Danny sees his family die in TUE what if he finds out then that he’s related to a DC hero then? After the timeline is fixed he goes to his cousin who just so happens to be Raven of the Teen Titans and explains that bc of time shenanigans, he found out he’s related by blood.

How does the Teen Titans react? They’ve dealt with time travelers so many times this sorta stuff is just their average Tuesday level of shenanigans. A kid with powers that fit perfectly on par with other Teen Titan members. Main issue: his blood and DNA are so scrambled that their computers can’t confirm with a definitive proof that he’s Raven’s cousin.

Danny is desperately running away. Not from a robber, they’re not much of a threat to him anyways, but from a really intense Batman.

“Oh my ancients,” he muttered as he sprinted away from the dude swinging above him. “Can you please go away?! I already paid you back, dude!” Danny raised his voice at the swooping figure above him. He wished he could go ghost, but that would break his cover so fast as a “meta” or whatever.

“Stop running,” Batman landed in front of him, growl reverberating around them.

“Stop chasing me then! It’s bad manners!” And Danny’s from the midwest, so that’s an actual concern.

“How did you find Two-Face?” Batman loomed before stepping back when Danny’s shoulders curled inwards.

“Oh. Is that what this is all about?” Danny huffed. “It was self defense! And… the pun was too good to not, you know? Yeah, no, I had to. Prime opportunity.”

The cowl might hide it but Danny always knew when people are doing that nose pinch of exasperation. It’s a talent he carefully cultivated through shenanigans and puns.

Batman? Definitely inwardly pinching the bridge of his nose.

“How did you find him? Harvey Dent is a dangerous criminal.”

“In my defense,” Danny started, like a teenager caught guiltily shoving the entire cookie jar into his room instead of leaving some for the rest of the family. “He found me first. Well, no, he found the kids first. He started it!”

Batman somehow raised an eyebrow. How the hell does he do that?? The cowl covered the entire upper half of his face! Danny squinted at him. Is Batman a meta?

“Listen, I didn’t start it, but my sister sure as heck taught me how to end it. It’s not my fault Dent couldn’t handle a beat down. And I told you I was gonna pay you back for that one (1) Big Dent! If you wanted cash, you should have said so!”

“Hrm.”

Maybe it was the fancy gear. Maybe it was the pointy head thing. Batman reminded Danny way too much of Vlad and he got the ick.

“Okay, well, good talk, bye!” Danny ducked and ran, faster than he had before.

Batman grappled up and forward, trying to grab him. Danny, with years of dodge training under his belt and impeccable teenage instincts of gtfo, managed to dodge Batman’s reaching hands with a hollered “OPE!”

“Bye! See you never!” Danny ducked behind an alley and turned invisible as Batman swooped past.

When he was sure the vigilante was gone, he slowly faded into the visible spectrum.

“Jeez. Better warn Amy about this. Maybe I should hide in Crime Alley until this blows past.”

Gotham’s underbelly had a new tale to sling around their bars that week and a new demographic to be wary of.

The Terrors, the kiddie gang that ran perpendicular to Crime alley, was preyed on by Harvey Dent.

“What do you think you’re doing to them?!”

“Ahhhhhh!!!” Harvey screamed, flailing as a creature of shadows and claws- god damn those sharp ass claws- descended upon him, scarring it just one side but both sides of his very vulnerable face!

“Back the hell off of my kids, you fashion reject!”

As for Harvey… well, he’s developed an aversion to the smell of peanut butter and small children.

Viral Thirst Trap AU:

The only thing Danny could feel right now was complete and utter humiliation. As always, it started off as a joke. Tiktok was something Amity Park didn’t have access to for a while considering the fact that they were cut off from the rest of the world until a few months ago when Technus and Tucker teamed up to fix the media blackout.

Amity Park debated on this topic heavily weighing the pros and cons and eventually decided on the outside world only knowing about things Amity Park allowed. Meaning unless an Amity Parker posted it on social media platform meant for the public, no one would know. Hacking would be impossible without ghost resistant tech and visitors wouldn’t be able to expose anything without it so truly there was no downside to this unless someone slipped.

Inside jokes on Phantom and Amity Park were a norm often leaving others confused before scrolling and moving on. In fact most of the posts coming from Amity Park are ignored by the masses. But not this one. No this time someone just had to post a thirst trap edit of him under the “think I need someone older” sound with the caption “when he fits the Bill 😍😍“ on tiktok.

And he knows it’s meant to tease him because of the Invis-o-Bill reference (which fuck whoever’s acc that was for bringing that up) but why did it have to go viral?? Like yes he knows this is a joke on him being “older” because of time travel shenanigans and “colder” because of his ice and “take the weight off your shoulders” because he’s a hero. But why??

Now he had people simping over him and wanting to know more about him and Amity Park (and man where they overjoyed to let others know about their local (and favorite) hero). And just when he thought his undead life couldn’t get any worse, the fucking JL had to show up after he was kidnapped (summoned) by some crazy ass cult. Even worse, their sidekicks immediately recognized him as the quote unquote “hot dead hero from tiktok”. Someone finish killing him now.

Okay, you know those inconsequential moments in movies and shows where something is done or said but it doesn’t matter until the Protagonist connects things/uses the info later?

Enter Danny.

This is a small job that he does while working with Clockwork. Danny walks around doing or saying things that might move the time stream to the ‘ideal’ outcome. Does he know how it helps? Nah, just that it does since he knows the slightest change can have big impacts. He doesn’t know exactly how long he’s been doing it in this universe, but it’s something to do.

Tim, the Connector of Dots, has recently caught onto a pattern of things, but he’s not sure what he’s looking at.

Baby Phantom with his Rogues Gallery in DC:

While in a fight with Skulker and Technus, Danny, now de-aged by a new invention, inadvertently, with his rogues, landed in the DC Universe. It had been Batman who saw them first as they wreaked havoc on the sky of Gotham. And all saw the robot fight the tiny meta-alien toddler. And the 2 Villians who seem to attack and try to kill the Toddler. Before he could do anything, both the toddler and the Villians were gone, seeming to be flying away. This had gone on for a long time in many cities until Danny was finally able to defeat both Skulker and Technus. And he then noticed his new body. He was in a toddler body, in public... Skulker called him Whelp and wanted his pelt by skinning him alive. Well, time to go undercover till he builds a way home, a better prison for Skulker and Technus, and escapes these newly learned heroes, villains, and civilians. Who wants to save him from his creepy villains?

Danny's fight was seen by almost every city of the heroes, and all of them are pretty pissed at Skulker and Technus. And sadly for both ghosts, magical and similar attacks work on them. So if they are caught by a hero or villain, it could give them much pain even while Intangibility.

Out of all of the people The Ghost King Phantom expected to relate to, it definitely wasn’t the scrawny red headed photographer of the Daily Planet. Jimmy Olsen has gotten so many temporary superpowers over his time being Superman’s friend. Hell, he once gained a 4th dimensional being’s reality warping abilities when he was given said dimensional being’s powers during a fight. Sure there’s a dozen or so heroes with the same amount of powers he has, but none as suddenly granted to them as a all powerful god that can relate to a teenager.
