“The first time I had that dream was…”

Riley’s voice trailed off quietly as she sorted through the mess of fuzzy memories in her head. The silence grew longer as she stared at a blank spot on the floor, to a point one would think she had fully spaced out mid-thought.

It had been so long now, she had almost forgotten where it all started. An abandoned lighthouse. Splitting up- and then nothing, an entire week of n o t h i n g, completely missing from her memories where there should have at least been s o m e t h i n g. The only thing she could recall after splitting up was Vivi’s subtle carefulness around her, like she was worried for her for some reason she wouldn’t explain. Even now, months later, it still ate at her that Vivi refused to tell her what happened in that lighthouse.

“Do you.. remember that lighthouse? The one we visited on my birthday?” She asked, her voice feather light as she turned to her friend. Somehow, the tired gentleness to her tone made her look all the more exhausted.

“That’s about when. After I blacked out- almost every night since then I’ve had that dream. The constant almost-dying thing probably isn’t helping much, either, if I’m honest.”

In your hands, the warm brew that you tightly held in your grasp had slowly drawn itself cool the longer you took to difficulty search for a memory that seemed almost entirely out of sight.  Its once warm lull now drained to a pinching lukewarm cool, the steam now gone by the time Vivi had drank her own mug half empty.  Her tea tasted awfully bitter.  Had she not put enough almonds in to give it a tad extra zing?  Riley only drank hers once, but it might’ve not been enough.

Although her Grand Mama had taught her some of their peculiar brews when it came to drawing out the living spirit forth of its fresh stress?  She still hadn’t practiced as much as she should’ve when she was still just a tot.  Out of practice as she was, Vivi hoped it would still be enough.  She and her companion always had a strong bond then, so even then… All she had was hope to draw out this hazy dream.

However, for now, she could at least feel the efforts of her early brew starting to settle and slip through the cracks of her own nerves.  Even though Riley seemed to look more tired by the minute, Vivi could feel the faint electric tingles of their connection spreading.  Gentle as their spirits were, her empathy now heightened more than she’d grown accustomed to, she could hear the faint rhythm of her companion’s heart nearly overlapping her own.  Relaxed it felt, yet skipping every second beat; being a raw indication Riley hadn’t slept much in the passing nights.  Like being plunged into the depths of the dark, she could see it now as her companion’s voice seemed so loud in her ears then.  They barely spoke a word to her, but she didn't need to hear it when their heart scratched their words so deafening into her mind.  Had Riley spoken at all since she stared down at her carpet floor?

“.. Yeah.”  She could smell the foamy sea water surrounding them then.  It was nothing more than an illusion, one of the many things her Grand Mama had warned her about every time during their tea making lessons, but the mind always made everything feel so real in a dream.  “I remembered we used to go there every year.”  Vivi could feel the hard unstable rocks underneath her bare feet.  She had forgotten to keep her socks on for a surprise session like this, but it always made her feel uncomfortable to do then.  “But one day we just stopped going after we lost connection in between college.”

She clutched her mug firmly.  She could hear the hard sprays of the wave water splashing up to her face.  Blinding, the lighthouse never seemed so vivid in her memories, then.  “Do ya remember what happened that night?”

For that moment, Vivi subtly allowed her brows to furrow together alongside a long line that drew itself downward upon her cheeks.  Her mouth almost produced a lone frown, but it was quick to morph down just a little; producing the dame a more inquisitive look as her gaze quietly took in her companion features, only finding that they were averting their eyes away from her own keen stare.  Quietly dipping her head down a little, and as she cupped her chin into the nook of her thumb and index, she was slow to scratch at her jaw.  “Black goo monsters..?”  Her voice quietly echoed back.  Looking away towards her counter, and taking it to get lost in thought, she took another long sip from her own mug.

Where had she heard this one before?  Black goo monsters, with countless hands reaching to take whatever it could from her dear pal?  Sleep was the first it seemed, and it was already starting to wear the other thin, too.  

“.. Hmm, alright.”  She said.  “When did this exactly start then?  Did this start over work?  Has anything been stretching you thin?  Are there any friends I need to worry about?”  She was quick to raise another brow in reply.  “It sounds like this consistent dream might be taking from some form of stress, from what ya tell me.

((TORTOISE LORE on the days i have to work onsite at my job i almost exclusively set up shop at the coffee place across from the office & listen to my little music & drink my little beverages all day so this particular set of questions resonates with me so bad))

for consistency's sake coffee-wise let's say we're talking starbucks. i think most days sirius would go for something high in caffeine but with a little sweetness to it. a venti iced shaken espresso with oat milk and three pumps of classic sweetener, perhaps. maybe switch that classic out for chestnut praline at the holidays bc he's feeling festive. other days i think he'd want an absolute sugar bomb as a reward for getting through a rough week or bc he was really mature today and refrained from screeching at people in the street when they didn't walk fast enough & blocked the sidewalk when he was in a hurry. on those days he requires a big ole mocha cookie crumble frap or an iced cinnamon dolce latte with an extra shot for fun.

on his walk home he's listening to one of three playlists depending on the day. the first one is a fourteen hour pop girlie playlist that starts with style by taylor swift and ends with kiss me more by doja cat, with some ariana, gaga, spice girls, charli, no doubt, & even some abba thrown in the middle for spice. the second playlist is for mocha cookie crumble days and starts with your best american girl by mitski and features lots of phoebe, lots of taylor, lots of lana, some ethel cain for sure, some select fleetwood mac, maybe some stuff from the 1975's a brief inquiry album. it's all stuff he can dig into & be angsty with & have strong feelings to.

the third is a more generic thought-dump kind of playlist where he just throws in songs he likes. buttercup by hippo campus. the view from the afternoon by arctic monkeys. concussion by girlhouse. ilysb by lany. like....,.,moonage daydream. 6 inch. pink pony club. bring it on home. just a mix of vibes and genres & things he gets stuck in his head.

contrary to popular belief i do think remus is a coffee girlie and would pick a mug of good dark roast drip over tea any day. i think he's simple for the most part & would go after a good tall americano on days he needs the kickstart but a grande drip with light cream would be his everyday go-to. during the summers he switches to a cold brew or plain iced coffee with cold foam if he's feeling fancy. he likes to pretend he doesn't like the frilly expensive drinks but every time he & sirius get coffee together, sirius orders him a grande mocha with two extra pumps of mocha and whipped cream on top & he downs it in about eight seconds.

remus is a hozier stan confirmed. remus is a boygenius stan confirmed. he likes poetic lyrics more than anything so sirius puts him on mitski and taylor. i like the idea that his music taste was a little outdated most of his life bc his parents had a huge record collection that they inherited from his grandparents so he just....played music all the time as a lonely little kid looking for things to do. when he was nine the only album he listened to all christmas break was otis redding's the dock of the bay & that made him gravitate toward stuff like leon bridges & amy winehouse as he got older. he learned about spotify four years after everyone else did & still only has two playlists. his parents loved the 90s rock girlies and they listened to a lot of the cranberries and fiona apple CDs around the house, so all those albums are really nostalgic for him now. he puts sirius on jeff buckley & regrets it instantly bc literally all he does now is play remus' grace vinyl full-volume and remus is afraid they're going to get a noise complaint. you can hear it in the stairwell sirius the neighbors are going to get mad please

And yeah I agree! I think that we don't carry them into the fight just to crack open the door and sort of wave a red flag at a bull sort of way

And then when the alpha vampire dies we get the remnant imbued with a bit of that vamps specific magic

And yeah perhaps using the skulls almost a psychic lockpick if those chosen had been imbued with some of the alphas powers (referring to the trickle down effect you noticed, Vampire mlm is a concept that will be lodged in my brain now)

The biggest one for Bellwether not giving a shit I believe was a piece of dialog that said like "once we get out of here do you think they'll drop a nuke on this place" which made me laugh bc I audibly went just like resident evil grqt2h3 which despite some of the negative reviews comparisons to other games the lack of resident evil with vampires is making me laugh (I mean it in a positive way I'm very attached to RE)

Plus I don't think a privately funded not so small military/mercanary group is gonna lose sleep over a "few" civilian casualties (especially not when you can write em off as vampire deaths when it comes down to it)

Yeah I agree! One of my main grievances was I wish that side quest/mini bosses got more diversity and watchers idk if those are miniboss types as I think they go down p easy (but like I said can't/haven't played the game so I could be wrong) they seem closer to the mutated cultists than "true" vampires

And totally get you on lore one of my other favorite games is destiny 2 and holy shit the amount of environmental storytelling/lore is so strong they have a fan run website to compile it all so I totally get you.

And yeah with Addison I won't spoil it but holy shit he was the worst one too me I wrote out/expanded on the house of Echos mission so I was rewatching and it ended up being 4k words but also it was woof. I almost wish they swapped the order of the map start out in the second way with the other 2 then work into the 1st area for the hollow man

Yeah my sort of interpretation (both in how I'm writing and general fun) is that his Ravens outlines + his guns lock on are from that eye but a fun thing I had was giving them all like the way things are highlighted blue for you to grab some of the psychic residue as most of the psychic energy we see (barring layla) tend to be a pale blue - teal(?) Ish color and it was just funny to me that the highlights for important objects were similar

I agree with vampires probably having night vision as they are supposed to be a sort of apex predator so night vision fits with the whole can't go in the sun.  It does make me wonder if Jacob would run into issues in direct sunlight with that eye time to invest in sunglasses my guy

And yeah I hadn't considered the psychic spaces as like stronger spaces where the trance is louder, bc in my thoughts I think the trance is a seperate but adjacent magic thing to what turned them into vampires

It definitely seems like the magic sort of got them all or bolstered abilities in some way and come on we both know that devs def smart enough to crack teleportation lmaooo necessity is the mother of invention and all that. But I do think that magic and science go hand in hand (destiny 2 is so great for that reason aswell because so much of what looks like magic can be kinda turned into science)

I think Remis ult is pure video game but healing it would make sense if it gave out a sort of opposite end of the spectrum vampire healing and helped you regenerate by like tapping into that magic that's settled in you or the vials/remnants

yeah we don't know how the healing actually works as you don't regen health unless you find medpacks which leads me to believe you do have to needle and thread it up instead of magic video game heal as explained in dishonored or prey

And yeah I'm assuming vamp regen at best at worst, you should uhhhh probably got get that looked at bud and yeah blood as fuel is a good idea even if it was connected or disconnected

And yeah the tissues, I'd imagine a wash cloth would be slightly more useful than tissues but eh and yeah sort of a gunk goop dripping thing (ie Eris Morn from destiny with her hive eyes)

And yeah! I think to be a bloodbag/sin eater it also I think is slightly voluntary(?) As the sin eaters are like that. And the blood bags seem pretty eager so maybe the most devoted cultists get turned into em

And yeah I'm uncertain bc I remember for one of the missions Jacob has a line like "but slitting the throat of your neighbor to get in." Or smth like that it's been awhile

And yeah vampire mlm, and yeah definitely maybe the more sacrifices brought in = higher chance of getting turned

I think it's a bit of both as we see with the alphas they were all real shitty people beforehand and yknow being willing to kill others to further your own gain definitely fits under "bloodsucker" (derogatory) in my mind lmao

And I think that's why Jason got away was bc hes not a bad person and was rather selfless hence but still also perhaps shaped by the intent of the person giving you magic (jacobs raven, laylas telekinesis which is something other higher up vampires can do as weve seen with the sea) But also made to shape you're own natural abilities remis healing, devs gadgets :) especially in those latter two cases where they wernt forced really to have the powers

The slow boil is soooo intresting to me bc like where were they? Like in the nests psychic spaces and just coming out to feed plus with the size of the alphas I think that'd kick up a fuss

I think probably a but of both, as drug trials/medical research like aevum was doing was bound to test on mice at least and upon observing the effects may have worked there way up to humans but huge fucking claw marks are probably vampires especially from what we've seen they are extraordinarily wasteful with animals perhaps both as food and ensuring surviving humans can't get it

And birds + animals disappearing evokes a similar feeling of when animals tend to dip before natural disasters because there senses and instincts are so much stronger than ours but also vampires killing them because they couldn't go after people yet

also lmao yeah like idk where tf they were going with that like was the plan to eventually move out of redfall or use it like a home base or smth bc you kill the animals and the people you're gonna have to start eating each other

And yeah! Idk if it's ever explained if vampires exclusively have to eat blood/meat or can eat other things aswell

And oh my God don't get me started on the impacts of introducing a fuck ton of apex predators into your ecosystem and food chain not to mention if other animals mutated and are breeding. Like just removing Wolves from Yellowstone was enough to fuck over the ecosystem I can imagine something on this scale plus the probably intense growth from the decomp rates of bodies.. anyone in an environmental science field would be tearing their hair out (specifically my own redfall oc whose a park ranger is not having a great time with that)

You would have to build ground up essentially as trying a top down approach would fuck up the few remaining secondary and primary consumers (obligatory environmental science rant over)

They all def do the trance def is giving hive mind vibes aswell as a removal of emotional/rational thinking makes me wonder if the blood trance heightens base instincts/hunting drive or aggression like with animals being aggressive and shit being fucked

And oh def, bc each of the bosses has there own space but the nests aswell which makes me wonder if vampires have their own allegiances or a nest is like a pack

And yeah hindsights 20/20 and yeah fears a hell of a motivator and cults pray on scared lonely people with no other options and yeah in too deep

I haven't! Unfortunately I haven't watched a dev playthrough and there's not too many multiplaythroughs on YouTube but I'll inform you if I come across any! And as for rough speculation on mothman physique(?) I think leathery makes sense from someone as logical as dev since it glides so it being similar to a bat or moth it almost makes me think of point pleasants.. intresting... statue of the mothman to say the least...

And yeah woof the scientists sure as hell are doing some malpractice although I'd admire arkanes commitment to fuck the rich with them being consistent enemies.  And yeah sorry this got Hella long

Ooooo okay so love ghoulia <33333, in g1 she's in the main crew but not like featured as much as say, Draculaura, Clawdeen, Frankie, and Cleo. She is by far the smartest ghoul at school, and honestly has her act together more than the others cuz, love them, but they're messy. Ghoulia's bestie is Cleo, and I think at least in the doll line lore, ghoulia is the one who discovered Cleo in her tomb? That could be just to make a cohesive story for their collectors dolls though. Their friendship is sweet imo, obvi it can be a lil toxic at times cuz Cleo is.... Cleo, but y'know. Also also on the talking thing, I know alot of people were upset ghoulia spoke English now (saying spoke English cuz y'know technically in g1 she does speak, it's just in zombie, but I digress). Anyways ik there was a bit of controversy around the change as alot of nonverbal people found comfort and rep in ghoulia; I would give my own comment but I am not nonverbal myself and as such feel unfit to discuss that specific topic (if I find any good sources or opinions from nonverbal fans I'll be sure to send though). Ooo yeah I’m slightly more aware of Cleo’s popular mean girl status just from fandom osmosis. I never would’ve guessed she and Ghoulia would be friends based on their character designs, but it does make sense. The concept of an undead mummy is just repackaged zombies right? Ooooo.

Now that you mention it I do remember reading that she did make inarticulate zombie sounds, but I never thought it was its own distinct language, that’s kinda fun. But yeah i can see how it’d be very relatable to non-verbal people to see a character like that. I’m not non-verbal, but I do often get like really tired of talking and just kinda go ‘mhmm’ when people talk to me lol (not sure if that’s the same type of thing, I’ve heard it called shutdown or being semi-verbal? I’ve known I’m autistic for 5-ish years, but there’s so many specific things about it, and I usually don’t have all the right vocabulary for everything until someone brings it up first and I’m like ‘oh it was the autism the whole time??’) Anyway

okay so first of all i am going to be having nightmares about AI Turo because seriously What The Shit, GameFreak.

like it's a very sad little ai. but it's also just turo. but it wants to be free but it's trapped in the earth and could only get away by going forward in time. and it twitches and glitches and its text was all funked up and oh god lordie, Avren had to see that thing with the face of his dead dad. Like His dad is sjust straight up dead. He "no longer exists" in E for everyone terms. somehow not saying it bluntly makes it much creepier on AI Turo's end.

they kids are gonna be okie :) i liked the talking on the way down between the 3. i like Penny. Nemona is silly and season 1 chommy coded. Arven my lil guy. they're good kiddos and I care abt they.

overall it was rlly good :) i liked it a bunch and think that for all the bugs and performance issues, this game has rlly good story and lore and plot and character design that the devs put a lot into. they just needed more time to keep the gameplay in check and it's sad they didn't get it. but at least they got to make a good story. so that's nice :)
