MAGGIE MOORE (S) (2023) Grade: C
It didn't find it's footing, wasn't sure if it wanted to be a dark comedy, crime, or a rom-com. The cast is good & Jon Hamm & Tina Fey do have good chemistry from their 30 Rock scenes.

266 - The Nest
Tumblr media
We who loved his debut Martha Marcy May Marlene (see previous episode!) waited eagerly for director Sean Durkin's follow-up feature while he worked in television and produced other films. That sophomore feature came almost a decade later with The Nest. Starring Carrie Coon and Jude Law, the film follows a married couple who move to England to follow the husband's finance career, only to quickly get consumed by financial woes. The film also returned Durkin to the Sundance Film Festival... and then the pandemic happened.
This episode, we talk about Durkin's upcoming The Iron Claw and Carrie Coon's work in theatre and on The Leftovers. We also discuss how the film dabbles delicately in psychological horror, Jude Law's playing pathetic men to perfection, and the 2020 Sundance Film Festival lineup.
Topics also include the National Board of Review's Top 10 Independent Films of 2020, Durkin's work on Dead Ringers, and IFC Films.

Maggie Moore(s) (15): Highly enjoyable small-town cop thriller.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Maggie Moore(s)” (2023). I’ve found Jon Hamm’s movies to be a bit of a game of Russian Roulette. For every “Bad Times at the El Royale” or “Baby Driver” there’s been a “Confess, Fletch“ or “Wild Mountain Thyme”. “Maggie Moore(s)” proves to be a quirky and engaging film on the positive side of the Hamm balance. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: Jordan…

The Nest (2020) - Film Review
Here is our #review of The Nest, the latest film by Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin and starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon:
Ten years after his acclaimed debut Martha Marcy May Marlene, Sean Durkin returns to UK cinemas with The Nest, a drama starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon. Premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, The Nest takes place in the 1980s, when British trader Rory (Law) talks his American wife Allison (Coon) into uprooting their family to the UK due to the lack of jobs in New York. He quickly settles…

The Nest    [trailer]
Life for an entrepreneur and his American family begins to take a twisted turn after moving into an English country manor.
Marital and family dramas usually aren't my preferred genre. But because it's mostly of the icy kind, and because Law and Coons give such compelling performances, I very much enjoyed and recommend it. The whole staging and filming creates such an eerie feeling.
It's clear early on, when she mentions, that it will be their fourth move in ten years, that he's a bullshit artist. But man does Law play one convincingly.

The Nest (2020)
The Nest avoids beating a dead horse, but it does bury one. But I’m getting ahead of myself.  In this second feature from director Sean Durkin following the 2011 debut showstopper Martha Marcy May Marlene, Rory O’Hara (Jude Law) and his wife Allison (Carrie Coon) move their small family to Rory’s native England from suburban New York, in their fourth move in a decade. Like WW84, this is a…
