One would be hard pressed to learn much about Jianyu if asked. He will merely state that he is from Liyue – the Guili Plains at that – and then give no further elaboration if pressed aside from him becoming curious about the world as a whole thanks to the tales he would hear from the harbor. It was through these tales, along with the stories he grew up on in regards to Rex Lapis, that he would eventually take his leave of his homeland, and instead, ‘spread his wings’ elsewhere as if guided by the wind itself. The things he experienced in life were a series of little coincidences from how he awoke one day beneath a tree to see a vision sitting in the palm of his hand as a boy, all the way to when he eventually joined the Adventurer’s Guild, and then from there, joined a mercenary group to further strengthen his skills.

His history, he would say, matters very little as there is hardly anything special about it. He was a young man who held endless curiosity and hunger for freedom, nothing more, nothing less. “Heh, sorry. No thrilling tales to offer from this experienced traveler. I was just another dreamer,” is what he’d always say. Jianyu occasionally likes serving as an escort to merchants, going with them from region to region and making sure they get home safe and sound from their journey. To him, it’s just another means of being able to travel – but this time, for profit without him having to dig around in his own pocket to do so.

i'm still working but rq: will knows how to cook for himself.

we see him making food for his dogs that is better than most people prepare for themselves.

he has a ton of kitchen gadgets and at least a stack or two of cookbooks in his house, canonically (there's a few seafood-themed cookbooks for sure and then he keeps a few books and binders in his pantry which i can only assume are full of recipes). fish is most definitely the star of most of his meals, but i'm sure he knows how to prepare it in a thousand different ways by now.

he visibly has food out (we see bread, a mixed bowl of fruit, even butter in a precious little glass container that's shaped like a chicken?? weirdo) on multiple occasions.

his father worked ridiculous hours and he was left to his own devices for pretty much his entire childhood, he learned how to cook for himself. it's likely that growing up he occasionally got dragged to neighborhood bbqs, cookouts hosted by his dad's coworkers, etc. so he was exposed to a bit of variety in food there too. and specifically for my will, growing up afab in the south, you show up at an event with food and you are instantly in the kitchen and finding ways to help. even if will didn't want to, it's just etiquette. even if they just told him to sit down and peel potatoes, he was AROUND food and learning about it.
