To save some space, I’ll only be translating Kazuki’s comments. I do love seeing the fans engaging with the posts though, that’s really cute! Anyway, I mostly just did this for my own personal fun and practice (since I know that there are automated translations).

Also the “honest business” line with no questioning from Miri (she’s old enough to not overlook such a comment) probably means she knows their past too.

I feel like they probably had to tell her just in case they got persecuted. If they told her exactly how her mom died is vague tho

Totally, it's a really common trope to greet your dead family every morning through a photo so it's safe to assume they told Miri about her mom. I definitely feel like at that point they told her about their jobs too, since Kazuki is shit at lying and Miri would have asked at some point growing up. I really wish we could've seen both reveals but I'm glad they only implied it happening rather than rush it in a single episode timeframe.

Summary: Sick fic. Rei starts acting strangely one morning, he's just not himself. Kazuki has to take on the role of nurse, knowing he's the only one Rei will accept help from.

Morning came once again. Time to get Miri off to kindergarten. Normally, they would all eat breakfast together, but something was off today. Rei took much longer than usual to rouse himself from the tub. Kazuki had to try and wake him several times, that at least was normal.

"Rei! Your food's getting cold!" Kazuki called, wiping Miri's mouth as she messily enjoyed her fluffy pancakes. Moments later, a very dishevelled-looking husk of a man made his way into the kitchen. He looked pale, even for him. His breathing was shallow, out of breath.

Kazuki watched him as he clumsily sat at the table, staring at his food for a moment before just resting his head on the cool table surface with a sigh.

"Hey, everything okay, buddy? If you don't want pancakes today then you can just say so." The blonde probed, trying to figure out what the issue was. Rei sat up, his head lulling to one side, seemingly too heavy for his neck.

Picking up his fork, he started taking teeny bites of his meal, struggling to swallow. Cringing slightly with each mouthful.

"Papa Rei, don't you like the pancakes?" Miri asked, sipping her orange juice as she watched him struggle. Kazuki wasn't sure what the problem was.

"Look, if you don't like them, don't eat them. Me and Miri will split the rest, no use in- R-Rei?" He paused in shock as Rei suddenly urged, dropping his fork and stumbling to the bathroom in a hurry. The concern within Kazuki was confirmed when he heard the unmistakable sound of gagging, followed by the contents of one's stomach hitting the toilet water. Sick.

Miri's lip quivered, what was wrong with her papa? Kazuki petted her hair, reassuringly. "It's alright, you go get your shoes on, okay? Go, go." He encouraged, lifting her from her seat before rushing to the bathroom.

"Rei? Hey, are you-" He was met with a very sad looking man, sat on the floor by the toilet, panting as he hugged himself, shivering as if he were freezing. "Oh Rei..." Kazuki sighed sympathetically as he walked over. "Hey, can you hear me, buddy?"

"Yeh..." The dark-haired man responded, his voice strained as his throat ached. "Sorry... 'Bout the pancakes..." He shuddered, glancing at the toilet bowl.

"Hehey now, you know that doesn't matter right now." Kazuki smiled, patting his friend's shoulder before flushing the loo for him. The sound made his head spin. He was presented with a glass of water, which he drank thankfully. "I'm going to get Miri off to playschool, okay? Will you be alright just for a moment?"

Rei nodded, groaning as Kazuki helped him to his feet. "Let's get you to the lounge. I'll leave the balcony door open, get you some fresh air." Kazuki held Reis's shoulders, supporting his wobbly frame as he sauntered to the lounge, practically collapsing onto the couch.

Miri watched from the doorway, worried about her papa Rei. Why was he all wobbly? Why didn't he like papa's pancakes? Rei spotted her, giving a soft smile. "M' okay, Miri. You have fun at playschool." He flinched as Kazuki pressed the back of his hand against his forehead, the blonde humming in thought.

"Temperatures a little high. I'll stop by the pharmacy on my way back." Now running late to get Miri to school, he hurriedly grabbed the bin from the corner of the room, setting it beside the sofa in case of an emergency. "Okay, I'll be back as soon as I can, Rei. You just rest up." He threw open the balcony door, letting the warm breeze into the lounge.

"Bye, bye papa Rei. Stay away from the pancakes! They're bad." Miri called with a wave before being scooped up by Kazuki and leaving.

Silence fell throughout the apartment. Rei was laying on his back, head propped on a plump cushion as he stared at the ceiling. "Cold..." He mumbled, turning on his side and curling up on himself. The shivering became unbearable. He wanted to be warm.

Fumbling for the throw blanket on the back of the couch, he managed to pull it over himself, tucking the fabric around his feet, bringing his knees to his chest as he cupped his hands near his mouth, desperately trying to warm up.

How long is Kazuki going to be gone? How long had it been already? Why was he taking so long? He groaned, his breath hitching, sweat starting to pool on his forehead, his hair growing sticky and damp. Still cold. Still so, so cold.

He squeezed his eyes shut as the room started to spin. God make it stop. Please. "Kazuki-..."

"Rei, it's me buddy. I managed to grab some Tylenol for you. And I thought you'd like some yoghurt, easier on your throat." Kazuki called as he set his shopping bag and keys on the counter, looking over at the couch. "I'm surprised you haven't turned the TV on." He chuckled, walking over, frowning with concern.

"Hey, you mustn't be bundling yourself up like that. You'll only make your fever worse." He pulled on the blanket, earning a grouchy humph in return as Rei peeked out from underneath.

"C'mon, I need you to sit up for a moment. I know, I know, it sucks, just whilst you take your medicine." Kazuki was ever so gentle towards Rei whenever he got sick. Although the man led a physicality healthy lifestyle, his lack of sunshine, continued smoking and excess junk food binges meant the occasional sickness would slip through his defences. And whenever that happened, Rei became frail. Very childlike in demeanour. Just wanted sleep, having a grump whenever he was disturbed and seemingly very dazed.

Kazuki grabbed his shopping bag, took out a brand-new thermometer, discarded the packaging and held it up to Rei's mouth. "Right, aaaah-" He instructed, sticking the end under Rei's tongue before gently guiding his mouth shut with a thumb on the chin. "Keep that in for a moment, okay?" He ordered, standing and folding up the throw blanket he had removed from Rei's frame, setting it on the end of the couch, out of reach.

The thermometer beeped, ready with the results. "... Geez, didn't think it was that bad." The little digital screen read '104'. Too high. Rei cringed, looking over his shoulder as if he'd heard someone. "Hm?..." He hummed, blinking in confusion before turning back to Kazuki, looking up at him with narrowed eyes.

"Not... Really..." He mumbled out of context. Kazuki raised a brow. "Not really, what buddy?" He crouched by his side, looking closely at his eyes.

"Um... Later..." Rei frowned, looking over his shoulder again. He wasn't making much sense. Kazuki looked in the same direction as Rei, figuring out what was going on. Auditory Hallucinations. He sighed sympathetically, holding Reis's hand. "Hey, there's nothing there buddy. It's just me and you. Okay? C'mon, let's get this medicine in you so you can have a nap."

He popped open the Tylenol bottle, shaking two pills onto his palm. He offered Rei a glass of water to take them with, but upon seeing his shaking, unsteady hands, decided he'd just hold it for him. "Alright, hey, can you put these in for me?" He asked, offering Rei the pills. The man cringed, leaning away. He did not want the pills.

"Pretty please? You can watch a movie afterwards." He smiled, giving his knee a reassuring squeeze. With a little persuading, Rei took the pills, put them on his tongue and, with Kazuki's help, swallowed them with some cool water.

"Nice job. Okaaaay, what do we wanna watch? Hm? Something fun?" He asked, gently taking off his friend's socks, knowing it was a good way to keep people cool, before helping him lay down on his side. Rei curled up again, tucking his feet under one of the couch cushions as he coughed out an answer. "Stitch."

Being deprived of a real childhood and now having to watch childish shows regularly, Rei had found comfort in watching old Disney movies. His favourite being Lilo and Stitch. Kazuki smiled, petting Rei's hair before putting the movie on for him.

Not ten minutes in and the gunman was out like a light. His breathing mellowed out slightly as he rested. Kazuki stayed in the room with him, sitting in the armchair and quietly working on his laptop.

Only another ten minutes had passed before Rei stirred again. Unfortunately, as the laws of the universe go, things always get worse before they get better. Rei pried his eyes open, the light making them sting, his head pulsing in pain. He couldn't see properly. Everything was blurry and wouldn't stop dancing.

With quite a struggle, he sat himself up, sitting awkwardly on his knees, when Kazuki noticed. "Reiii, Earth to Reiii, go back to sleep buddy." He cooed from his seat. Rei looked around, puzzled by the voice he heard. Where was it coming from?

This was weird. And he didn't like it. Rei's breathing hitched as his eyes filled with tears. He had no idea what was going on. Kazuki noticed him sniffling and was by his side in an instant.

"Hey, heeeey, you're alright. You're okay. Shhh. Kazuki's here." He took Rei's hands, becoming more worried when he pulled away.

The gunman tried backing away, holding his head in his hands. "My head, I-I can't- It hurts-" His panicked state caused his heart to race, and his breathing became shallow again. His cheeks paled suddenly, another wave of sickness making him gag as he leaned over the side of the couch. Kazuki, quick as a flash, tucked the emergency bin up under Rei's chin, catching the bodily contents as he spewed.

Kazuki brushed Rei's hair from his forehead as the feaver stricken man started to cry, tears and drool stuck to his cheeks and chin. "I-I'm sorry... I'm sorry... S-Sorry-" There was some unspoken trauma behind this reaction. Apologising after throwing up. What the hell did his parents do to him?

"Shhh, don't be sorry, Rei. No one's angry." Kazuki reassured, rubbing his friend's back. He grabbed a tissue from the table, gently wiping the mess from his friend's face. "Deep breaths buddy, in.... And out.... In... And out. There we go."

Kazuki patiently breathed with Rei, eventually calming him enough to get him to drink some water. That's when he noticed the sick down the front of Rei's hoodie. "Aw buddy. Let's get this one off." He smiled, gently helping Rei out of the messy garment, also taking off his shirt and swapping it with a fresh, sweat-less, long-sleeved tee.

Once he was changed, Kazuki got Rei to lie down again, chuckling briefly at his sleepy expression. "Close your eyes, buddy. You're gonna be just fine." Rei didn't have time to protest, sleep washed over him like a wave. He was out for good this time now that the Tylenol was taking effect.

The next time the sick man woke, he was greeted with darkness. Much easier on his eyes. It was nighttime. Though he still felt like crap, he at least wasn't seeing or hearing things anymore, meaning his temperature had gone down somewhat.

He groggily lifted his head, not remembering anything that happened. When did he change his shirt? He looked at his feet, a pair of ankle socks had been put on, just so he wouldn't get too cold overnight. It was all a blur for him.

A fleck of glitter caught his attention on the coffee table. Waiting for him was a card. Messily strewn together, hand made and covered in glitter glue and stickers. Without needing to sit up, Rei picked up the card, squinting as he read the front.

'Get well soon, papa Rei'.

He smiled, setting the card down with a yawn, a snore from nearby making him jump slightly. Over in the armchair, Kazuki and Miri were curled up together, sound asleep. Neither of them wanted Rei to be alone.

Glad to see his family were near, Rei nuzzled back down into his cushion, letting his mind wander once again. The rest of the night went by peacefully. With only snores and sweet dreams to be found.

wow what a great way to end the series i'm like content,,,, sure the anime had some issues but with what we got it was a very consistently good anime,,,, gonna miss the daddies that are buddies,,

anyways i was too lazy to screenshot parts of the episode so you only get text but hey listen to me ramble for a bit

the beginning threw me off ngl bc i was like damn they are already home wtf how it made me remember the earlier episodes so that was a good callback,,,, even if i was too stupid to realize it until later lol

also rei was very father in this episode and you can interpret that in either definition ig it works. small things like wanting to dress up as santa for miri so she can believe in him bc he was never able to or big things like showing his father how much his new family means to him by shooting his shoulder,,,, it's so beautiful the way he evolved

his father not shooting him even when his back was turned was the perfect way to finish his relationship with his father. i know a ton of people were worried he was getting redeemed or that he was gonna die or something like that. but no he was talked to and shown that his son will never continue the family line and his dad quietly accepted it. he didn't want to nor did he even plan to, but he eventually say it wasn't worth it and i think that was the best way to finish that plot point.

when miri saw her dads in the crowd at her recital i cried reminded me of my own christmas performance when i was her age,,,, also miss anna having to control herself so she didn't go crazy on the piano was a nice touch

omg the family has matching santa outfits it's so cute

ever since i started this series i was hoping for a big time skip and we finally got it and omg 😭 miri is grown and kazuki and rei own a cafe together,,,, that is the most gay shit i've ever seen. also seeing miri say good morning to her mom made me cry a little.

you can really see how miri is influenced by all three of her parents now that she's older,,, she even has the haircut like her papas have,,, so cute

i am glad the series ended this way, although i wish we got more (i am selfish) this is a good amount of content.

i will never get over kazuki beard it will haunt me,,, i don't doubt fanartists will fix that for me tho lol

it's strange i've been watching this episode every week and talking about it, being a part of the community,, and now it's suddenly over,,, kinda sad but i'm not heartbroken or anything,,, but i'll miss the buddy daddies fridays,,,

now that the series is over maybe i'll finally write fanfics for it,,,, who knows,,,

i say this like every 3 episodes but i have a new favorite buddy daddies episode (ep 9 spoilers under cut)

tl;dr: i love rei and the growth he's shown. if ep 8 was him realizing his resolve, ep 9 is a continuation of that where he gets to show the growth he's had since realizing it. papa rei is the best!

this episode had a lot of the gags that make buddy daddies really enjoyable and funny! i had a blast watching it, and every now and then i’d stop to show my brother a clip because i’ve been trying to get him to watch this lmao. but the episode also had a lot of really really good rei scenes!

i just love seeing rei come out of his shell, and ep 9 had a lot of that. while ep 8 was arguably very rei centric, it didn’t exactly show his growth as a father, but it showed his resolve to stay attached to the little family he’s made. and ep 9 feels like a good part two/continuation to what ep 8 had established.

first off, i thought it was nice that both kazuki and rei didn’t exactly know what they were doing. i was pleasantly surprised when, after rei admitted to never having gone to a sports day event before, kazuki immediately understood. and not only did he understand, he admitted to never having been to one, either—makes sense, given his own childhood wasn’t all that easy either. it just really nails down the point that these two men have never quite had a proper childhood, but they’re doing their best to provide it for miri. it’s really heartwarming!

kazuki is, predictably dorky and embarrassing! his behavior in front of the other mothers had me laughing And grimacing HAHA, but he was having a blast and it was really nice to see. he wasn’t overly pushing rei, either, he was content to do the cheering for the both of them. he checked in on rei, he cheered for miri, he was such a good guy in this episode over all! this episode only boosts the appreciation i have for him!

but of course, i'm more focused on rei. like i said, ep 9 was a really good show of how much he's grown and how much he's decided to stick to the resolve he found in ep 8. he's definitely showing more initiative as a father, trying to help kazuki with the lunches and making rice balls for miri which was sooooo cute. he's trying his best and learning to be a father in his own way. the best part? he's being validated for his efforts! i LOVE seeing that he's not just some butt of a joke like "lol this failguy is such a silly dad" no! he's appreciated for what he's doing! whether it's staking out a spot to sit or making silly rice balls, he's made his effort and he's appreciated for it!

more and more, he's learning to not just be an assassin, but someone who cares for another human being. during the sports day event, there was a lot of emphasis on the cheering parents and how enthusiastic they were for their children. they were loud, active, and supportive - all the things rei isn't (except, of course, for supportive). he was clearly uncomfortable and felt out of place.

"can i really be here? do i have to do all of that to be a good parent to miri? is that what it means to be a good parent? is this something miri would want?"

the answer to those questions? obviously, rei doesn't have to do all those things, but those are the people around him. that's all he has to go off of. and rei is rei - that's just not something he can do. he's not a loud person, he's not the type to muster up a lot of energy during the day. his energy is reserved for his ON (work) mode, because that's what he was taught to put his energy towards. he watches kazuki and all the other parents cheer loudly for their children and he's uncomfortable because he's not sure if he can do that.

but he watches miri do her best and, well, he's getting caught up in the hype! this child he has been living with for over half a year now and growing attached to is trying her best and he wants to see her try her best! he wants her to win, he wants to see her happy with her success. hearing him yell for miri even though he was so uncertain about it before was so thrilling to me because the answer to the questions he asked himself was "yes". so when his loud cheering throws miri off guard and she trips, of course he's going to take it hard. he received the answer to the question "can i support miri like the other parents?" and found out that: yes, he can - but the immediate consequence was causing her to fail. something that he would be taught never to take lightly.

miri never took it that seriously. she's disappointed yes, but she's a stark difference to rei who became very despondent over his child not winning the race because of his own excitement. and again and again, kazuki isn't pushing him or anything.

then he gets his second chance to really be with his family, to win something together with them. it kind of drives home a message of "maybe you can't win by yourself, but you can win with your family - whatever kind of family that is for you." i dont know. i really like this episode. i think it might be my favorite over all.

i reaaaally hope the best for this family. i have no clue what PA works will do, although i do have my own predictions/guesses. they've done a stellar job with subverting expectations so far, so who knows!

I don't know what to think. I just just they're so precious.

I love Miri so much, but how she asked to have both her mom and her papas there to see her sing- I can't (low quality Miri is me)

this anime has been a rollercoaster. not the found-family slice of lice I thought it was but it's still perfect. love Rei speech ab the things Miri and Kazuki made him discover and the final "dad" broke my heart. I laughed when Ogino fucking died. finally he's not there saying "your last words" bro stfu I don't care ab your speeches ab words and illusion and shit, you deserved to die that way and we stan Kazuki and his man. (Kazuki and Rei are just perfect. shut up they are)

ok but srsly i liked the ending of this ep but i think the middle was a bit sloppy? like the action and everything.

a lot of things happened that logically didnt make much sense (KAZUKI WHY THR FUCK DO YOU TAKE SO LONG TO SHOOT) and the pacing felt off, like VERY rushed.

im also sad that misaki died, it kinda felt like a cop-out? like that was the easiest way to have kazurei back with miri. idk for a show with v good character writing and development, im disappointed that they went for a lazy writing choice instead of fleshing misaki out more. they couldve worked it out w miri having her papas and mama, or at the very least kept her alive longer.

but otherwise good ep :)

interested to see how the show will continue next episode. apparently we have one more left?? which.. makes me a bit scared that the ending will be rushed bc of how kazuki and rei will leave the organization.

when they said that they will no longer be hitmen and will instead become a true family w miri, the only thing i could think was 'okay thats cool and all but how yall gonna do that? i thought yall couldnt leave the organization🧍‍♀️' so yeah i still have questions but i guess well have to wait and see.

(also last thing i swear but- i also wish miri was given a bit more agency? she felt a bit.. stale this ep? i dont think thats the word i looking for, but she was very much oblivious to everything going on, like less than a character w her own thoughts and feelings and more like a placeholder kinda? for example, if orgino didnt fuck everything up, they couldve shown miri's reaction to her papas not coming back. or maybe next ep, let her know the death of her mother and how shes going to react to that? like shes going to eventually ask wheres her mama and kazuki and rei cant lie to her forever. but yeah thats one thing ive noticed and wish theyll address before the shows over maybe)

Saw your art of Rei digging two graves and just realized he is paralleling Kazuki. But his tragedy is doubled

He has long hair (Kazuki doesn’t cut it for him anymore) and he is wearing Kazuki’s jacket. A man who lost his partner and child (that he did get to know) He has her hair clip close to his heart.

But Kazuki has no relatives he knows of, no one to try to compensate. He is so alone, he got to know the happiness of forming a family just to lose it completely. And he can understand Kazuki’s grief, but with no escape. He doesn’t have anyone else to care for, or to be cared for. All thanks to his biological “father”

Yes you got it! Where Kazuki had Rei to care for after Yuzuko's death, Rei has absolutely no one, definitely the worse out of the two endings. In Kazuki's ending he still has Miri(plus I never confirmed if Rei dies in that piece only that he gets shot protecting Kaz).

Based on today's episode context, there could still be a lot of angst even if Rei survived the gunshot.

Given how willing is Kazuki to give up his family if he believes it's the best for them. And an injured Rei might not be able to argue back

…Tho if we take into account all the context of the episode, maybe Rei would only double down?

I don't think Kazuki would straight up abandon Rei when he's injured though 😭 Maybe after he's healed. But I dunno cause if he's gonna run he'd have to take Miri with him cause they're both "liabilities" to Rei, the logic doesn't really connect imo. He'd definitely blame himself though. Rei would absolutely drag him back kicking and screaming if he ran.
