Black history month isn’t just about celebrating the people we know, but uplifting the people whom we might not know.
This was truly a labor of love as I spent that past few weeks learning about Tina Bell’s life and the impact she and BAM BAM in general had on the Seattle grunge scene.
I would love it if you read about her story and share this with others who are passionate about music and black history, I want her to be just as much of a household name as Kurt Cobain.
Also please listen to their album! Its incredible!
Happy Black History Month to all my Black grunge guys gals and pals!!!! We were always here!!!

Golden Hour (+ lineart below cut)
I took a picture of the lines for once and did some basic crappy photo editing on my phone, so you could probably print this out and use it as a coloring page or something if you so wish lol. Do with it what you will.
#honkai star rail#dr ratio#veritas ratio#aventurine#aventurine hsr#cherallart#as you can see i forgor i wanted to draw his glasses til like. last second#i can’t believe it’s been like 2 whole months since I last did a whole like. watercolor illustration#part of that’s been bc I’ve been having a bit of a rough semester bc adhd med issues (which are resolved now)#but I really wanted to draw aventurine and ratio. my boys#i’ve been LOVING penacony so far so I needed to get something nice out#anyway I did this while my s/o and I alternated between reading a 500 pg long history book out lout to each other#it’s called ‘the inheritance of rome’ and kinda covers what happened after the collapse of the western roman empire#and tries to identify and explain all the cultural echoes and reverberations and transformations that rose from its ashes#throughout europe north africa and the middle east. anyway it’s super interesting and I highly recommend it#the late antique period is not something often covered/talked abt in public ed hist classes. at least not when I was goin through em#or the transitory period between it and the early medieval period at least#i still got 150 pages left and a final paper due on it in like 4 days but it’s only a 5 pg minimum and I’m a wordy bitch so#i think i can make it#anyway back to that I go

remembering a little scene from "age of bronze" by eric shanower (which i highly suggest anyone who likes greek mythology and especially mycenaean history should read -- if you can handle how fucked up the story is) where agamemnon is annoyed by how heartbroken menelaus is over helen, and he turns to his bestie odysseus and says something like "let me give you some advice, odysseus: never fall in love with your wife" (gods know agamemnon doesnt love -- or deserve -- clytemnestra) and odysseus is just like...."uhh yeah...it's a bit late for that"
#this scene tickled me#one of the lighthearted moments in the deep darkness that is age of bronze#its beautifully illustrated#and meticulously researched#the only graphic novel ive ever read with a works cited section in the back#but dear god is it dark#which makes sense because...greek mythology and bronze age history#age of bronze#eric shanower#greek mythology#the iliad#the odyssey#odysseus

"Years of fighting. Bots and Cons falling left and right. Dying on our behalf. No more. We settle this now, Megatron." "Just the two of us then? To the death? Ahh, brings me back to the pits all those centuries ago. Very well then, today will be the day the great Optimus Prime finally falls by my hand." "Only one of us is walking away from this rock functional, old friend. It will not be you."
~ Audio from Optimus Prime's remains at the sight of his final confrontation with Megatron that ended the Great War. circa 2003.
Audio encoded by Soundwave, Memory bank recovered by Ratchet
#transformers#maccadam#transformers fan design#optimus prime#megatron#tf reconstruction#had to design them bc i have such a clear idea for an illustration i wanna do for my au and needed ref for when i get around to it#i think their history is Interesting and Cool in this universe#like its standard fair kinda except at one point they were both freedom fighters on the same side against cybertron's oppressive government#(after optimus initially served as a propagandized captain america figure against the growing uprising)#but disagreement's in how to handle everything once cybertron was liberated#(and decepticon generals like starscream and shockwave whispering into megatron's audio processors over the years)#lead to escalations and eventually all-out civil war which spread across the sector and the galaxy#i'm thinking the initial disagreement was like. optimus wanted freedom and self determination free from any corrupt governing body#with the belief that reestablishing the council would only lead to further corruption and therefore another uprising#while megatron at first wanted a better government that actually looked after the people it was supposed to provide for#but that got distorted from ''we need what's best for cybertron'' to ''I'M what's best for cybertron'' over time#idk if that's all that revolutionary or unique but it was what felt right to me

this is gonna be a long one so bare with me as i ramble
i’ve realized fairly recently that doing art as a job is never going to be sustainable for me. while my hands being injured absolutely sucks and i hate it, it’s made me realize i was actually really stressed out, especially since art has been my single source of income. being a working artist means that there will be very little structure and it’s all on me to create my schedule. i can’t do that very well! and not it a “woe is me i cant do it”, but more of a “i understand my limits”.
the timing of this sucks though because i literally have one more semester left until i finish my art degree :’) but after the initial panic im actually kind of excited! i’ve actually decided that once i finish my degree, im going to get my prerequisites out of the way and then major in marine biology (nobody saw this coming)!!! i’ve always had a tough time seeing my future as a professional artist. it’s much clearer now with this new potential job:)
so once my hands get better (please please please be soon oh my god), i’m going to take less commissions and draw for myself more often 💕
#if u read this thanks for reading! i needed to get it off my chest#only thing i’m not excited for is math 😀 but i’m determined to get thru it!!#also this doesn’t mean commissions are off the table i will still be taking those lol#tbh i flip flopped between orthinology and marine biology but the b1 orcas won me over#maybe i’ll major in wildlife biology idk#my current major is illustration and sequential art!#it was supposed be to be 2 years but uh. covid#i don’t regret it at all tbh i really enjoyed all my art classes (especially art history and sketching comics)#and life drawing!!!! but the professor was kinda. rude lol#okay i’m done rambling

I know that 'The Secret History is a satire' is an extremly prevalent take, and I think it came about as a response to the idea that tsh "romanticises" things like classist ideas/substance abuse/murder, but like. It can be unsupportive or critical of the characters without being a satire. Satire is not the word you're looking for here
#tsh#the secret history#And frankly in my opinion it is also an incredibly boring and reductive interpretation anyway#Like. There's so much else to chew on here.#Fate. the ancient vs modern digression vs obsession dichotomy happening. Identity/loss of self.#The immortality/death/ghost/memory thing. The unreliable narration.#The way their paths notably shape them but remain illusory. Fate.#You're missing out on so much if you only interpret it as a satire.#And frankly. Satire is a specific thing that is not this.#Like you can argue that ONE of the things happening is an intentional criticsim of the characters but#a. That's not automatically the same as satire b. That's not the only thing happening#c. You could debate whether 'criticsim' is really the word to use here anyway#As opposed to like. Being self aware of and intentional about the characters flaws and#using them to further illustrate and exlore the stories themes.#Like. You wouldn't call blood meridian a 'satire' just because the narrative is 'critical' of the judge.#That's not how anything works. Having flawed/amoral characters does not mean#you have to make the entire point of the work into a denunciation of them.

When I have issues with historians, I ask: ‘Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the fuck up then.’
Ridley Scott, director of Gladiator and Napoleon, which explains so much
#napoleon#alexandre dumas senior infamously noted that history may well plundered if only it leads to giving her beautiful children#in this particular case i would say ridley scott illustrates a different french quotation about old age being comparable to a sinking ship#personally i think he ought to be burned at the stake for expiation and a cleansing of france's collective soul#i wish we could pull the cultural appropriation card too#ridley scott#and yet the duellists was so cool

Auuuuuuugghhhhh Neil Price why must you do this to me? Why?!
(he ended the book. how dare he. and so poignantly. Sir. Do you not realize that this leaves me to read Tore Skeie. He's sensationalist TRASH by comparison. Exactly what I expected when I picked up your book, Mr. Price, sir, but now you have given me standards.)
#alas#also idk what mood it is that leads me to write Mr. X Sir but it applies to Neil Price and Peter Morwood#so that's data#I like the illustrations in The Wolf Age#and it's only 230 pages to skim in search of interesting information I don't know#but. I'm not very motivated.#particularly since this IS the sort of sensationalist trash that tells me things I know enough to not believe as written#mind I thought this about Mr. Price at first it's just that. Mr. Skeie is.#he's writing 'a history worthy of a modern television epic' according to the Financial Times#it says so on the front of the book

Gray skies will chase the light away
No longer
I fought the fight, now only dark remains
Forever
Divided, I will stand
And I will let this end
~Breaking Benjamin, Angels Fall
#Was Born To Lead#My OCs#Valerio Álvarez#My edit#An absolutely random aesthetic because I accidentally came across the pictures I used for this edit in my drafts#and I was in a Valerio mood today so this is how it happened#An eagle because this is a very important symbolic element in Valerio’s story#A quote about ‘dark past’ because this is basically the core part of his story#Chess because he’s into chess#A random man putting on gloves because gloves are like Valerio’s second skin now#Damn it was so hard to find a gloves pic…#But I couldn’t not to include it so I tried to choose at least something#Anyway to assure he certainly doesn’t wear leather gloves I’d feel bad for his hands considering their climate#Now when I think about it I realize I have no idea how his gloves look like#The only thing I can say is that he wears them over the shirt sleeves because it looks fancier and he also has several pairs of gloves#An inspirational quote because Valerio is all about encouraging others and stuff#Old books to illustrate his passion to history#And something like a ‘lending a helping hand’ thing because Valerio is people-oriented#And a Breaking Benjamin song because I love this band and it has so many songs fitting Valerio#Honestly this is a very self-indulgent edit and I don’t expect it to get even a one note#but I’m posting it just because I think it turned out pretty and I adore Rio <3#It was quite quick even though I had to play with filters a little#(which is probably noticeable)#to make the pics look better with each other#Akjandk my mom says I have a good sense for design so it probably implies I’m supposed to be good at making aesthetics :’D#There are also so many aesthetic ideas for him since I also could include the fire the scars something beach related just anything really#WAIT#I’ve just realized I can create aesthetics for my characters’ birthdays#so I can celebrate it somehow#Yoooo I love this idea

Sources for Somerton's Plagiarism from Hbomberguy's Video (as much as I could get)
I went back through Harry's video, focused entirely on the sources James Somerton pulled from in the hopes of creating as much of a comprehensive list as I could--though my Google-Fu is not very strong. I did however find something I thought was forever lost and that made me very happy--specifically the magazine Midlands Zone containing the column by Steven Spinks that Harry poignantly used as an illustration of gay erasure... while Somerton uses it to sound like HE is waxing remorseful about the very subject.
This is not a complete list, I'm sure. For one thing, I was only able to attempt to pull sources that Harry himself mentioned in the video. Surely there's so very much more out there. I expect there to be a great deal more internet archeology to unearth just how much writing and culture Somerton has stolen like he's the British Museum of Natural History but for gay people.
- - - - -
Harry's list of mentioned youtubers:
Alexander Avila - https://www.youtube.com/@alexander_avila Matt Baume - https://www.youtube.com/@MattBaume Khadija Mbowe - https://www.youtube.com/@KhadijaMbowe Lady Emily - https://www.youtube.com/@LadyEmilyPresents Shanspeare - https://www.youtube.com/@Shanspeare RickiHirsch - https://www.youtube.com/@RickiHirsch VerilyBitchie - https://www.youtube.com/@verilybitchie
Harry created a convenient playlist of videos by these and other people he wants to bring to everyone's attention.
Please give them your support.

Midlands Zone Magazine - Column by Steven Spinks
After a great deal of searching, I found an archive of the "Midlands Zone" magazine, where you can read through past issues dating all the way back to February 2014. I have also found the issue from which Somerton took Spinks' poignant discussion of gay erasure: Overall archive Specific Issue - Pages 16-17
It will not allow you to download it, but you can read it exactly as it appeared in print form.

I refrained from including certain sources.
First off only focusing on Somerton's work.
Secondly not including anything that might be visible enough to not require amplifying their voice (I cannot speak for all of those I have found links to, but journalism is frequently a thankless job).
Thirdly any source that is of a nature that is antithetical to the very existence of the queer community, such as the right-leaning source that didn't make it into Somerton's video, but Harry was able to identify as a source he had considered using.
If you feel I have missed a mentioned source--or you know of a source from material that was not covered in Harry's video--please do not hesitate to reblog with added details.

Please share this information far and wide, and please add to it if you find more material that can be positively identified and linked to the creator/writer.
